Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools Black girls, and other girls of color, experience discriminatory, disparate, punitive, and unfair treatment in school, including suspensions, expulsions, referrals to law enforcement and arrests on school campuses, at rates that exceed the public school population in aggregate — and far exceed those experienced by their white female peers.

Brown NNPA Newswire Correspondent Black girls who have been subject to punitive school policies and practices are at an increased risk of coming into contact with the juvenile and criminal courts and leaving school altogether, ultimately impeding their ability to achieve future success and lead successful and healthy lives, according to a new documentary, “Pushout: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools.”

The film presents a number of these stories in heartbreaking detail and further explores a topic that was originally presented in the 2016 book of the same name by Monique W. Morris.

“Why not go to heaven now? I don’t want to be here,” Samaya, one of the girls featured in the film, says at one point.

At 12, Samaya is now an honor student. It has taken years of therapy and a change of school for her to recover from the traumatic incident that led her to a bridge above a highway contemplating suicide at the age of 7.

The event: One of her teachers, Mr. Rodriquez, gave Samaya a warning after a minor disagreement with another child.

Then, after Samaya accidentally knocked over a glass of water, Rodriguez punished Samaya by dragging her and her chair outdoors “in a fit of frightening rage.”

The teacher pulled Samaya out of her classroom on a cold 46-degree December morning. She did not have on a coat or jacket. She was wearing only a pink and gray sweatshirt and blue jeans.

Coping with the death of her beloved father, the destruction by fire of the only home she knew, and facing constant bullying, Ariana, another story shared by the filmmakers, found herself at a breaking point. “There is so much rage building in me,” the teen shares in the film.

Now, 16, Ariana said she didn’t know how to deal with the adversity she faced at home and school. She was suspended multiple times as classmates would pick on her because “I don’t look the way they look or dress the way they dress.”

Fortunately, a change in schools altered the trajectory of her life. Ariana, now a drummer in her school band at the Columbus City Preparatory School for Girls, has been able to turn her life around with the help of teachers, whom she credits with guiding her toward a positive response to the challenges she faces.

Some Black girls, like Samaya and Ariana, face educational, judicial, and societal disparities. Black girls, and other girls of color, experience discriminatory, disparate, punitive, and unfair treatment in school, including suspen-

sions, expulsions, referrals to law enforcement and arrests on school campuses, at rates that exceed the public school population in aggregate — and far exceed those experienced by their White female peers.

“This has to change. Our girls deserve more,” the filmmakers write on their website.

According to the most recent U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights data, Black girls are seven times more likely to be suspended from school, and four times more likely to be arrested on a school campus than their White peers.

Punitive practices and policies in schools fuel systemic inequities and result in negative outcomes based on race and gender. They have profound consequences for Black girls: rather than promote safety and well-being, these practices disproportionately push Black girls out of school and further into the margins.

People who knew Tyson also remember him as a champion of racial justice and an advocate for diversity and equality in the work place.

“I’m devastated,” Magic Johnson tweeted. The exNBA star and businessman was Tyson’s close friend.

“He was a visionary and championed for best quality and affordable healthcare, especially in underserved communities,” Johnson wrote in another tweet. “Bernard spent over 30 years at Kaiser and as an African-American man, I

was so proud when he was named CEO.” In 2017, Time Magazine included Tyson on its list of the world’s 100 Most Influential people.

The Golden Gate University alum (undergrad and graduate degrees) also served on a number of boards, including the American Heart Association and the San Francisco-based technology company Salesforce.

Network executives credit advancements in new technologies and the advent of new distribution platforms as the catalysts for rethinking their launch strategy.

Interactive Map Shows Lynchings Throughout History

By Stacy M. Brown NNPA Newswire Senior Correspondent In the century following the Civil War, as many as 5,000 people of color were murdered by mobs who believed in the cause of white supremacy.

On average, mobs killed nine people per month during the 1890s. Over the next 20 years, seven people each month were victims of lynch mobs.

The figures are all according to an interactive map project that tracks the history of lynching in America – state-by-state.

The map is called “Monroe Work Today.”

It is named after a black sociologist, who put together much of the information that details lynchings from 1835 to 1964, the period covered in the map’s data set.

Information found on the map reveals that black men were the most lynched group of people among the documented victims, usually due to mob violence after criminal accusations.

The map, which users can view based on region, also reveals the lynchings of Latinx people, Asians, Italians and Native Americans.

Monroe Nathan Work lived from 1866 to 1945, and the interactive map is called a rebirth of one aspect of his work.

Work was compelled to document every known lynching that was happening in the United States.

“You might already be familiar with what lynching is, and this website will examine it more,” the website’s authors write. “Of course, it starts with an act of injustice: by sentencing someone outside the law with no process or trial. Even worse, at the turn of the century, the methods of lynching had become commonplace, fueled by hatred — and unspeakably cruel. It was Mr. Work’s meticulous recordkeeping that preserves the names that are now an important part of our history.”

Work was known to love sociology for its search for the facts.

According to his biography on the website, sociology enabled Work to demonstrate how African Americans actually lived, in comparison to racist stereotypes.

For example, his work, “A Half Century of Progress,” compares the years 1866 to 1922. Despite enduring slavery and violence prior to 1866, by 1922 black people had increased literacy rates by 70 percent and vastly improved economically. The number of homes owned by black people grew from 12,000 in 1866 to 650,000 in 1922, just 62 years later. In aggregate, black people’s wealth grew by 750 percent, increasing from $20 million to $1.5 billion.

“Before this website, it was impossible to search the web and find an accurate scope of the history of American lynching. The names have always been kept safe but distant, in old archives and scholarly books and dissertations.

This site leaves the record open for all Americans, especially high school students who want to learn more than what their textbook has to say,” the site’s authors wrote.

The website provides an education on the definition of lynching.

It doesn’t always mean hanged from a tree.

“There were many ways that a mob could take the life of a victim they were after. Yes, many people died by hanging, but others were killed from a hail of gunshots, dragged to death behind a vehicle, and some were burned alive. Sometimes, the mob would do all of these things to a single person,” the authors wrote.

A victim usually was accused of something. Thus, lynching wasn’t a random attack. Many times, it was utterly trivial and not a crime at all, like talking back to a white person or daring to file a lawsuit.

Some lynchings that were rationalized as defending a women’s honor — a white woman — were actually covering up what were at the time, forbidden relationships.

Newspaper articles from the period reveal the flimsy reason was a black man found “hiding under the bed.”

Whatever the charge, it was never allowed to take its course in court. An angry group broke into the jail, pulled the person out, and executed him or her outside the law.

Sometimes victims were tortured for a crowd’s amusement.

Some lynchings went far beyond mere murder. They included dark and brutal tortures to a person’s eyes, fingernails, genitals, orifices. People were set afire, or bones were crushed, bodies mutilated, and sometimes cut into pieces.

The person died in agony. This kind of cruelty served as a lesson of terror to everyone else who might challenge the status quo.

Further, onlookers showed no signs of guilt for participating.

Many lynchings gathered a large crowd of spectators, like a carnival, and the lynching might be prolonged until more spectators could arrive. For example, the lynching of Sam Hose in 1899 in Georgia caused the railroad to run extra trains to let more people come right after Sunday church. Many photographs exist today because they were taken as proud souvenirs and postcards.

Lynching began as a form of self-appointed justice in local communities in the 1800s, when townspeople made

grave accusations first but never bothered to gather the proof. Then as the 1870s turned into the ‘80s and onward, lynching became adopted as a terrorist tactic by white supremacists. When slavery was abolished, and as settlers continued to arrive on the West coast, there were very real crusades to change the United States to a place only for whites.

In the South, a mythology arose that lynching was the only way to protect their “gentle women” against a crime wave of rapes. Similarly, in 1933, the Governor of California publicly praised the lynching of one kidnapper by

people on the street. He promised to pardon anyone who might be prosecuted for participating in the mob, according to the website authors.

“God made the white into a man and implanted within his breast that determination to always be supreme among races of men,” read an October 29, 1920 article in the Okaloosa News-Journal in Florida. “This is why the white man of the South, standing out boldly tells civilization: ‘I am a white man! I will rule!’ Were he to do otherwise, he would be a renegade to his race.”

clear that Philadelphia is trying to cover up their misdeeds toward veterans. The fact that there’s no office of veterans affairs is wrong. Philadelphia, in particular, City Council President Darrell Clarke, has messed up the money for veterans, and that’s why we are where we are.”

A spokesperson for Clarke declined to comment, citing the pending lawsuit.

Merretazon said he counts among the fortunate because he has obtained full benefits but, he must continue to fight for others.

“The veterans who come home to Philly have nobody saying what to do, and through our ministry, we’ve been able to provide direction on direct services,” Merretazon said. “It’s well-known that many are hurting. There are significant guaranteed benefits for the veterans and their families, but they aren’t getting them. “I’m 100 percent disabled. I’ve got mine. I’m trying to help other people get what they deserve.”

Lakers Extended Win Streak to 7 vs Heat Before Eventually Falling to the Raptors

By James Luckey Jr. Pat Riley and the Miami Heat come to downtown Los Angeles to pay a visit to the home of the Lakers. They left seeing why the Lakers has held the leagues longest winning streak and the best defense to open the season with the Lakers winning their seventh straight 95-80. The Lakers showed up most when it mattered most, in the fourth quarter. The Lakers held the Heat to 14 points in the fourth, and at one point made the Heat miss thirteen straight shot attempts in that deciding quarter.

Anthony Davis led the team with a team-high 26 points, to go along with 8 rebounds, seven assists, and 3 blocks. LeBron James was equally as good adding 25 points, four rebounds, and 6 assists. This game marked the 1,000th career game with at least 20 points, and he only trails Karl Malone (1,134 20+ games) and Laker great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (1,122) in the category in league history.

Although he had great offensive numbers and eclipsed that milestone, LeBron spoke highly on the teams defensive efforts. “I Mean, to be honest, defense is just us. Period.

We’ve been doing this all year. We don’t expect to hold teams at 80 points, but we expect to defend every single game, make it tough on teams and hold them under their averages. We did that once again tonight.”

Anthony Davis shared those same feelings about the defense when asked on their focus on defense. Davis said’ “ It’s our way. We want to be a good defensive team.

That team scored 115 [points] a game and we know they were coming off a back-to-back. For the most part, we just wanted the run them off the [three-point] line. There number one in three-point percentage and we held them to 17 percent. The Lakers dynamic duo led the way with LeBron posting a triple double (13 points, 13 rebounds, 15 assists) and Anthony Davis leading the team in scoring with 27 points. Kyle Kuzma also had 15 points as he beings to get his legs under him after an off season injury. Raptors forward Pascal Siakam led the Raptors with 24 points.

At press time the Lakers are 7-2 and finish the week out with a road test against the up and coming Phoenix Suns , and home games against the Golden State Warriors Wednesday night and the Sacramento Kings Friday night.

Allen/Comcast Could Tear Down Anti-Discrimination Law Continued from page A1

stations, which include The Weather Channel, Cars.TV and Pet.TV, because of his race.

Comcast denied Allen’s accusation of racial discrimination and won the lawsuit in U.S. District Court.

The company argued that Allen should prove that, without race being a factor, it would have signed a contract to carry Entertainment Studios stations.

Invoking Section 1981 of the Civil Rights Act of 1866, Allen appealed the trial court’s decision to the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. This time around, Allen won. A three-judge panel reversed the district court’s ruling in favor of Comcast and sent the case back for discovery and retrial.

Instead of going back to trial, Comcast filed a petition to the Supreme Court to overturn the 9th Circuit Court’s decision. The high court agreed to hear the case.

Johnson, NAACP’s national president, said his organization is not taking sides in the underlying dispute between Comcast and Allen. It is only concerned with preserving the Civil Rights Act of 1866.

He did say, though, that Comcast could have taken other options instead of taking the case to the current conservative-leaning United States Supreme Court.

“No one can predict the outcome of the Supreme Court ruling, but no one should put in the scope of danger an act as important as Section 1981 of the Civil Right Act of 1866,” Johnson said.

The U.S Department of Justice, through the Solicitor

General’S office, has sided with Comcast in the case and written a statement of support backing the company to the Supreme Court.

Comcast insists that its decision to deny Allen television stations carriage had nothing to do with race, and that it carries other Black-owned television networks.

If Allen wins, Comcast wrote in a statement, “it will permit frivolous suits such as this one to proceed in the federal courts and open the doors to burdensome discovery demands by plaintiffs who have suffered no deprivation on account of their race, while delaying justice for citizens with meritorious grievances.”

After today’s hearing, Berry says he does not expect the Supreme Court justices to reach a decision until at least Spring of next year.

Antonio Moore, a Los Angeles-based attorney and founder of the political movement ADOS, which stands for American Descendants of Slavery, has called for an immediate boycott of Comcast.

“The future of The Civil Rights Act hangs in a balance,” he wrote to supporters. “Comcast, Donald Trump and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce are asking the U.S Supreme Court to end your ability to sue against racial discrimination by destroying the Civil Rights Act of 1866.”

Harris urged participants on the call to get the word out to their loved ones and neighbors and “fight on the right side of justice.”

“Comcast’s argument could effectively dismantle our country’s oldest anti-discrimination law,” Harris said. “This can not be the legacy our generation leaves behind.”

Tigers Burrows, Gophers Winfield Earn Walter Camp Awards

Burrow had scoring passes of 33, 29, and 13 yards the Tigers improved to 9-0, 5-0 SEC. He also ran for 64 yards.

He earned the award for the second time this season (Sept.

8th) He is the 10th tiger to earn the award since 2004.

City of Inglewood Calls Failed Lawsuit an Attempt to “Sabotage” $1.2Billion Project The proposed $1.2 billion Inglewood Basketball and Entertainment Center, which would bring thousands of jobs, hundreds of units of affordable housing and hundreds of millions in new and long-term tax revenue to the city of Inglewood, took another big forward this month when a judge threw out a lawsuit seeking to block the project.

In a significant victory for Inglewood, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Daniel Murphy emphatically rejected the contention by Uplift Inglewood that the city violated the Surplus Land Act (SLA) when it entered into an exclusive negotiating agreement with the Clippers to develop the arena complex. The project site is on 23 acres of municipal land at Prairie Avenue and West Century Boulevard.

Uplift argued that the arena site should have instead been used for affordable housing, in spite of the fact the Federal Aviation Administration declared in August that no housing will be allowed on that site because of noise from airplanes. The FAA has the final say on land-use issues under the flight paths of LAX. The Surplus Land Act requires that any land deemed “unnecessary” for a civic purpose must first be considered for affordable housing development. But Murphy accepted Inglewood’s argument that the Clippers site had for years been reserved for the legitimate purpose of economic development, and thus was not “surplus” as defined by the law.

Murphy also agreed with the city’s contention that despite the surplus land law, no residential housing could be reintroduced on the site because it lies directly under the LAX flight path, where long-term exposure to jet noise poses a public health hazard “[The] City could reasonably conclude … that residential or school uses are inconsistent with the FAA

grant assurances and City’s land-recycling program,” Murphy wrote.

Inglewood Mayor James T. Butts hailed the ruling as a “tremendous victory for the people of Inglewood and a major step forward.

“The people of Inglewood have time and again stood up for, testified for and voted in favor of this project,” said Butts. “It would have been a travesty to allow a few malcontents to sabotage so much prosperity for this community.”

“The Uplift claim had no legal merit,” said Skip Miller of Miller Barondess LLC, counsel for the City of Inglewood. “Their sole purpose was to block economic development in Inglewood, and the court saw through what they were doing and made the correct legal decision.”

Construction and operation of the proposed 18,500seat Arena complex is expected to generate 8,500 new jobs, inject $268 million into the local economy, and yield $190 million in additional tax revenue for Inglewood over the next 25 years.

The project also includes an unprecedented $100 million community benefits package, $75 million of which will be spent on new affordable housing for Inglewood, along with $5 million for renters’ assistance and first-time homebuyers.

The city’s legal filings with the court pointed out the irony of a purported citizens group that advocates for affordable housing filing a lawsuit that would derail a project promising a bonanza of affordable housing funds.

The filings also pointed out that Uplift receives funding from the Madison Square Garden Co., which owns the Forum and is openly opposed to the Clippers project.

The Clippers arena and entertainment complex would be a transformative one for Inglewood, Mayor Butts said.

However, their defense can camouflage the limitations of their coaching staff as this team is talented enough to make a deep playoff run this season, it will be interesting how this team finishes out this season. #9 Houston Texans- The Texans have surprised everyone outside the state of Texas with their play to this point in the season. Their MVP candidate Deshaun Watson has got his team competing for more than their division title. Having lost their defensive stalwarts J.J. Watt to injury and Jadeveon Clowney to trade, the success of this team will have rest on the shoulders of their MVP candidate. #8 Kansas City Chiefs- Last season’s MVP Patrick Mahomes gives these guys hope and makes these Chiefs easily the most explosive team in the NFL. However, they will have to outscore the teams they play as their defense doesn’t appear to be able to slow down opponents and keep them out of the endzone. #7 Seattle Seahawks- This team continues to go as MVP candidate Russell Wilson goes! By upsetting their divisional rival earlier in the week, shows that this team can beat just about any team in the league. The addition of Jadeveon Clowney has solidified this already formidable defense making this team a serious NFC Championship contender. #6 Minnesota Vikings- A healthy Dalvin Cooks matched with their formidable defense has this team on this rise. AFC title. #4 New Orleans Saints- Though the Saints have suffered a terrible loss this week to a divisional rival, though Drew Brees has got some unexpected rest the past few weeks, being out with an injury, which should help them late in the season. Their youthful defense has helped to keep this team in position to be Superbowl contenders and why I have them at the #4 ranking of our Supremacy Rankings. #3 San Francisco 49ers- Having lost a nail biter on Monday against a division rival, this team still has a solid mix of youth and experience though they are winning in spite of their high priced QB. Their defense is filled with studs like Richard Sherman and Nick Bosa to lead the charge. Hall of Famer John Lynch has put together a very formidable squad that has surprised the league by opening the season 8-1. #2 Green Bay Packers- The Packers stud Quarterback Aaron Rodgers appears to finally have a stout defense and running game, in addition to having likely the best Wide Receiver in the game. This is probably the most complete team that Rodgers has had in his career, which has these guys ranked so high in our rankings. #1 Baltimore Ravens- This version of the Ravens is the epitome of what great drafting combined with great coaching can do for an organization. Historically known as a hard nose defensive team, they drafted a Heisman Trophy winner a couple of years ago and have helped the flash and dash of Lamar Jackson developed into a true contender for the league’s MVP trophy this season.

We will revisit our Supremacy Rankings based on what we see from the NFL over the next few weeks. This is just a glimpse of how we see this NFL season progressing thus far, I’d be interested to hear how differently you may see our NFL Supremacy Rankings.

Trojans Start Hot & Hangs On

By Earl Heath Contributing Sports Writer The proud USC football team came out furious. After suffering a lopsided loss to Oregon at the Coliseum the Trojans buckled down and came out smoking in front of 47,404 at Sun Devil Football Stadium on the way to a 3126 win.

Kendon Slovis had the best quarter during his time at USC throwing for 297 yards and 4 touchdowns in the first quarter. The freshman QB completed his first 11 passes.

He connected with Drake London for an eight yard TD to opening the scoring.

He later found Freshman Kenan Christon on a flair pass for a score. He later connected with Christon on a 58 yarder for a score and he ran away from ASU defenders..

He then hit Amon St. Brown for a 95 yarder that helped in a 28-7 first quarter lead. St. Brown finished the day with 8 catches for 173 yards.

Slois finished the day completing 29 of 39 passes for 477 yards. Even after he spent some time in the med tent getting an IV. Christon led the ground attack rushing 60 yards on 20 carries.

The win helped the Trojans (6-4, 4-2 PAC-12) stay in contention for the South title. “ Some people want to write us off,” said Head coach Clay Hilton. “But don’t write us off quite yet.”

The defense was led by John Houston with 9 tackles 4 solo- followed by Kanai Mauga eight, six of them solo.

Christian Rector had two but he had many pressures and had the play of the game. With 25 seconds left Rector put pressure on ASU QB Jay Yellen tip a pass then went and picked it out of the air to secure a Trojan win.

The Freshman Yellen completed 28 of 44 with 4 TD passes for the Sun Devils (5-4, 2-4 PAC-12). WR Frank Darby had 3 receptions for 88 yards.

John Legend Lends Support as Florida Felons Get Voter Rights

Singer John Legend was on hand to lend support Friday as 18 former felons were granted the right to vote.

By CURT ANDERSON AP Legal Affairs Writer MIAMI (AP) – Singer John Legend was on hand to lend support Friday as 18 former felons were granted the right to vote in what Miami officials called a simple and streamlined process.

The ceremony in a Miami-Dade County courtroom was meant to show that ex-felons can regain their voting rights, even if the Republican-controlled state Legislature enacted a law requiring them to pay any fees, fines and restitution first.

Florida voters approved constitutional Amendment 4 last year aimed at allowing about 1.4 million ex-felons to vote. The Legislature's subsequent law put the financial requirements in place, landing the issue before the Florida Supreme Court which heard oral arguments earlier this week.

Legend said he backs efforts to allow former felons to fully regain their place in society.

“It's so beautiful to see,” Legend told reporters. “So many people take it for granted, this right to vote. When you lose it, it makes you realize how important it is.”

“It just shows you how important democracy is, how precious democracy is,” he added. “It's important for all of us to be included in that.”

The Grammy winner held a fundraiser Thursday night for the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition, which is mounting a statewide effort to help former prisoners obtain the right to vote.

One by one, the former felons came before Circuit Judge Nushin Sayfie for brief hearings to ensure they are qualified to regain the right to vote. One of them was Andre Williams, 63, who had an aggravated assault conviction on his record.

“I'm happy. Very, very happy,” he said. “It's what I fought for, forever.”

Carlos Martinez, the Miami-Dade public defender, said people seeking restoration of voting rights can apply through the FRRC website and most would not need to come to court. If they do owe fines or restitution, Martinez said there are ways to settle those debts.

“We are all working with them to see those amounts are paid,” he said.

Desmond Meade, president of FRRC, said the organization is planning a bus tour to raise awareness through all 67 Florida counties.

“We want to encourage everyone to participate in our democracy, because that's what makes us vibrant,” Meade said. “There is hope. There is a pathway forward. We are hoping to replicate this throughout the state.”

The bright red bus features images of former felons, one carrying a sign that reads, “When a debt is paid, it's paid.” It also has the slogan, “Our vote, our voice, our time” on the side.

O.J. Simpson Sues Las Vegas Casino for Defamation

By KEN RITTER Associated Press LAS VEGAS (AP) _ O.J. Simpson is suing a Las Vegas hotel-casino that banned him in November 2017, alleging that unnamed employees defamed him by telling a celebrity news site he had been drunk, disruptive and unruly.

Simpson, on parole in Nevada for a 2008 conviction for armed robbery and assault with a weapon, filed the lawsuit Thursday against Nevada Property 1 LLC, corporate owner of the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.

The complaint acknowledges that Simpson, after several hours with two friends at a steakhouse and a lounge in November 2017, received a notice from a security guard as they left. It prohibited him from returning to the Las Vegas Strip property. He says he was never given a reason.

Cosmopolitan spokeswoman Rachel Henry declined comment.

Simpson denied in the lawsuit that he was “belligerent,” broke glass or damaged property.

Simpson attorney Malcolm LaVergne said his client's reputation was damaged by “hotel staff” accounts cited in a TMZ report that Simpson “was drunk and became disruptive” at the resort's Clique bar.

TMZ is not a defendant in the lawsuit.

Simpson had been released on parole less than six weeks before the incident, and LaVergne said Friday his client was stung by criticism on he received on social media.

The attorney said Simpson did not have a Twitter account in 2017.

“Now we've got Twitter. We've got a lawsuit. We'll see how things play out,” LaVergne said.

Simpson opened a Twitter account last June with an initial video post saying, “I got a little gettin' even to do.”

Most posts since have been about football.

The defamation complaint said a parole officer arrived unannounced at Simpson's Las Vegas home following news reports of the Cosmopolitan incident and administered drug and alcohol tests.

Parole officials found that Simpson had not violated probation “and ultimately determined that the Cosmopolitan's assertions against Simpson were false,” the complaint said.

Nevada Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Kim Yoko Smith did not immediately respond to requests for comment about the parole finding.

Simpson has been living in a gated golf course community after being freed from prison. He was convicted in October 2008 of leading five men, including two with guns, in an ill-fated bid to retrieve personal items and memorabilia from two collectibles dealers and a go-between at a Las Vegas casino-hotel.

Simpson claims in the complaint he is a “model” parolee and points to “an extremely warm and positive reception by many” who pose with him for photos.

With good behavior credits, his parole could end before 2022.

The lawsuit characterizes Simpson as “a well-known public figure,” college football Heisman Trophy winner and Pro Football Hall of Famer who “has experienced various legal problems.”

Simpson was acquitted in Los Angeles in the 1994 slayings of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ronald Goldman. He was found liable for the killings in 1997 and ordered by a California civil court jury to pay $33.5 million to victims' families.

The lawsuit was first reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

After a self-imposed hiatus, Lenora returned to the spotlight for a special performance in Washington, D.C. She belted out another Diana Ross tune, “Reach Out and Touch (Somebody’s Hand)” during the enshrinement ceremony of her late grandmother and former Houston Forward Times Publisher, Lenora “Doll” Carter.

The ceremony inducted Carter into the Gallery of Distinguished Black Publishers.

“I knew I couldn’t stay away from music,” Lenora stated. “But, I had management and people telling me to do things that I didn’t necessarily agree with.

When I did come back out, I did a performance called ‘Motown and More,’ and it’s a huge deal. There are 40,000 people there over the weekend for that show, and I had never done it before 2017. When I did the audition, they were like, “Who are you?” “Where have you been?” And I realized that this style of music is who I am.”

With a hot new single and tens of thousands of followers on social media, Lenora is on the fast track to superstardom.

“That Motown show opened doors for me in terms of people knowing what I Brown-like do. ‘Relax’ is the biggest so far for me, it’s getting a lot of radio play,” Lenora stated.

“It’s trending in the West Indies and London, and that’s crazy because I’ve never been to any of those places yet. I’m not a brand-new artist, but essentially I am a new artist because I’ve rebranded, I’ve taken a step back.”

Slave Rebellion Reenactment-Epic, Historical & Uplifting

by Eyal Vilner Big Band is playing in the background as I write this blog review. I have lost count of how many times that I’ve visited New Orleans in the last 25 years. In the past, I have visited twice in a year. During each of my visits, without fail, there is always something new that I have discovered.

I recently returned from New Orleans, November 6-10, 2019. The Universe was aligned for me so that I was able to learn about and attend an epic, historical and uplifting Slave Rebellion Reenactment.

Slave Rebellion Reenactment is a large scale, community-engaged film and art performance reimaging the largest rebellion of enslaved people in the United States-The German Coast Uprising of 1811, which took place in the river parishes just outside of New Orleans.

Slave Rebellion Reenactment is a project about resistance and freedom, the artwork involves hundreds of reenactors in period specific clothing, marching for two days covering 26 miles. The project explores how the past informs the present, telling a bold inspiring story about freedom, and those who died fighting for it.

The project was conceived by artist Dread Scott and is produced in partnership with New Orleans based arts organization Antenna, alongside many other community partners and advisors in Louisiana and beyond.

Dread Scott makes revolutionary art to propel history forward, his work has been exhibited/performed at the Whitney Museum, MoMA/PS1, BAM Fisher and galleries and street corners across the country.

On Friday, November 8th, the reenactment traced a 12-mile route through the St. John the Baptist Parish and part of St. Charles. The performance travelled from La Place to Norco, following river Road, concluding at the Bonnet Carre’ Spillway.

On Saturday, November 9th, the reenactment traced a 12-mil route through the St. Charles Parish. The performance travelled along the river from Norco to St. Rose, following the River Road.

The final phase of the performance travelled through the French Quarter, from the U.S. Mint. The reenactment concluded in Congo Square, in Louis Armstrong Park.

Each time I step into Congo Square, I feel a spiritual connection with the Ancestors. The Congo Square Preservation Society has been the major catalyst in the resurrection and preservation of historic and sacred Congo Square. The leadership team consist of Baba Luther Gray, Jamilah Peters-Muhammad, Marcus Akinlana, Alison McCrary, Freddi Williams Evans, Janet Sula Evans, Victor Robinson and Dr. Denise L. Graves.

Congo Square was the site for the final phase of the Slave Rebellion Reenactment. A vibrant celebration of freedom was held from 4-6pm.

12noon-4pm several local Poets/Spoken Word Artist/Rappers took to the stage to share some empowering, socially conscious lyrics for an attentive and captivated audience. Slangston Hughes & Fo on the Flo, Truth Universal, Asali Ecclesiastes, Sess 4-5. This set the stage for Delfeayo Marsalis dazzling performance. The band came out swinging with straight ahead jazz fitting for the occasion. Vocalist Sunni Patterson joined the band for several tunes.

The Army of the Enslaved arrived at Armstrong Park, they were met by Kumbuka Egungun Ancestral Procession, Sula and the Healers, while singing “Hell You talkin’ bout.”

The program continued with FiYiYi Drummers and Dancers and concluded with an energetic performance by Free Agents Brass Band to the delight of all in attendance.

Fitness Event in Downtown LA Los Angeles, Calif. –Covered California hosted a community fitness event to mark the start of open enrollment to highlight the new California laws that lower health care costs for millions and the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. Peter V. Lee, Executive Director of Covered California, Laila Ali, world-class athlete, fitness and wellness advocate and Leo Santa Cruz, professional Mexican-American boxer led the crowd in fitness demonstrations to promote the importance of health coverage among Angelenos.

There is more financial help available than ever, but those are not the only changes including early a million Californians will qualify for financial assistance to get coverage during open enrollment, middle-income individuals and families who make between $50,000 and $150,000 annually are eligible for help for the first time and California also restored the individual mandate, which lowered the cost of coverage, by requiring most people to get covered or pay a penalty.
