Two years into the presidency of Donald Trump – which has seen an onslaught of attacks on health care, reproductive and other rights – the stakes for Black women could not be higher this midterm cycle, according to many observers.

Statistics reveal that Black women face disproportionate barriers to reproductive health care and are more likely to die after childbirth than their white or Latinx counterparts.

Also, women of color are disproportionately impacted by bans on insurance coverage for abortion and at risk for criminalization should abortion be made illegal once again.

“Black women in America face significant barriers to health care, including abortion. We are also three times more likely to die after childbirth than white women,” said La’Tasha D. Mayes, founder and executive director of New Voices for Reproductive Justice, a nonprofit that promotes the complete health and well-being of Black women and girls.

Vandals Damage Cafe Claim Racism

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) – An Anchorage restaurant was vandalized after social media posts accused management of being racist.

Television station KTVA reports damage Sunday night at the Paris Cafe and Bakery is estimated to be $10,000.

Waiter Michael Patterson, whose family operates the cafe, says the restaurant Saturday had confronted a woman off the street who started eating food off plates.

When told to leave, she threw food at the waiter and customers.

Two hours later, a woman tried to buy meals for two people who may have been homeless.

A hostess said they could take meals to go but could not eat inside the restaurant.

Callers inundated the restaurant with accusations of racism. Social media posts followed.

Vandals on Sunday night broke plates, poured bleach throughout the restaurant and cut a natural gas line.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) – A community activist says he has gathered more than 6,000 signatures to replace a large sculpture of Martin Luther King Jr. in a western New York park.

Samuel Herbert tells WIVB-TV his goal is to get 10,000 signatures and a new statue by 2020.

He says the 8-foot bust of King that sits in a namesake park in Buffalo doesn’t look like the civil rights leader. The statue was unveiled in 1983.

While the original artist says the bust was supposed to be a representation, Herbert says, “enough of the symbolism, we want realism.’’

Herbert says he will start fundraising after reaching his signature goal.

He says he’s prepared to take his battle to have the statue removed to court, if required.

Yet most Republicans still care more about their wealthy friends and campaign donors than the middle class families that depend upon the benefits they have earned.

Brown NNPA Newswire Correspondent @StacyBrownMedia When the time arrived for Nompumelelo Kapa to write her doctoral thesis at the University of Fort Hare in Eastern Cape, South Africa, she likely responded: Masambe – a word that, when translated in English, means “Let’s Go” in the original South African language of isiXhosa.

The married mother of two and high school teacher made history by being the first person at the prestigious 102-year-old university to write her thesis in isiXhosa.

The school, which in the mid-20th Century earned a reputation for creating a black African elite, offers a Western-style academic education to students from across sub-Saharan Africa.

It has earned numerous academic awards and boasts many achievements.

“This is indeed a beautiful experience. I love my language so much,” Kapa told London’s Daily Dispatch.

For her efforts, Kapa received a doctorate in literature and philosophy.

“We are talking about transforming and decolonizing Africa, so isiXhosa should be considered and we also want to produce more isiXhosa writers, journalists, translators and others,” Kapa told the Sowetan news organization in South Africa.

The title of her thesis is, “Aspects of Culture and the Humor that Influence Naming in Selected IsiXhosa Texts: What’s in a Name?”

In explaining the reasons why she wrote her thesis in her mother tongue, Kapa said isiXhosa had become stifled as a result of “people finding it fashionable to write and speak in other languages, especially English, and in the process losing their identity and roots and endangering our heritage.”

Professor Nomsa Satyo called Kapa’s feat a milestone, a first of its kind.

There are 11 official languages in South Africa, of which Xhosa is one of the most widely spoken, according to South African tourism officials.

Approximately 16 percent of South Africa’s population, or 8.3 million people, cite Xhosa as being their home language.

Xhosa is characterized by a number of clicking sounds, which are formed by the tongue. These are represented by the letters c, x and q.

Those that speak the Xhosa language are usually part of an ethnic group known as the amaXhosa. This language is officially referred to as isiXhosa.

The word “Xhosa” is derived from the Khoisan language and means “angry men.” Most of the languages in South Africa that involve tongue-clicking originate from the indigenous Khoisan people, who included plenty of different clicks in their speech and language, according to the website, sa-venues.com.

Xhosa falls under the umbrella of the Bantu languages,

As a result, South Africa is known to be the native land of the Xhosa folk.

This is especially true of the Eastern Cape, where the language is spoken extensively and taught in the schools.

The Zulu people of South Africa have their own name for the Xhosa people, the KwaXhosa. When translated, KwaXhosa simply means “land of Xhosa.”

In a series examining the role of women in the 2018 midterm elections, NPR noted that more than a year and a half ago, the day after Trump was inaugurated, millions of women worldwide took to the streets in fury over his election.

It was a massive show of resistance.

One of the biggest questions that loomed over the demonstrations that day: Could the energy last?

Amy Chomsky, an ophthalmologist from Nashville, attended the demonstration in Washington, D.C., and she wanted to make it clear that she and her fellow marchers were serious in their anger.

“We’re not just crazy protesters,” she said the day of the march. “It’s a shame that we have to still be fighting for women’s rights or saying that we have a right to decide on our own reproductive health. We have a right to equal pay.

It’s a shame that we’re still doing this.”

Already, a record number of women have run and won primaries for the U.S. House, U.S. Senate, and governorships this year, according to the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University, and

a record number of women have also won nominations for state legislatures; the vast majority are Democrats.

In particular, according to the NPR series, Black women have relatively high turnout rates, and they vote heavily Democratic.

For instance, Black women in Alabama propelled Democrat Doug Jones to a Senate seat – a remarkable political upset – in a December special election, and they also helped push Ralph Northam to a win that was larger than predicted in most polls in his 2017 election for the Virginia governorship.

In a feature on ‘How 2018 became the year of the Black Progressive,” Politiconoted that 2018 may well be remembered as the political “Year of the Black Progressive,” much as 1992 was the “Year of the Woman.”

The online publication noted that Black women are taking office as mayors in major cities such as San Francisco and New Orleans.

Record-breaking numbers of black candidates are running for office at the state level.

No fewer than three black candidates are being seriously discussed as presidential nominees.

And with gubernatorial candidates Stacey Abrams in Georgia, Andrew Gillum in Florida and congressional candidate Ayanna Pressley in Boston, among others, Democrats have nominated young, black, progressives where they typically would nominate white moderates.

“No matter the outcome, this election results will give us a taste of what to expect in the next presidential race,” Politico’s Theodore R. Johnson wrote.

“Senators Kamala Harris and Cory Booker, as well as former Governor Deval Patrick, will be watching how black progressives fare this year very closely before making their decisions on whether (and how) to embark on a presidential run.

“Trump and the Republican Party will be paying attention, too. The nation will be tuned in to see if this is truly the year of black progressives, or if they’re just the flavor of the month.”

LOUISVILLE, Ga. (AP) – A group that encourages African-Americans to vote says about 40 black residents of a senior living center in Georgia were told to get off a bus taking them to vote.

Jefferson County, which operates the senior center, considered Monday's event “political activity” that's not allowed during county-sponsored events, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported .

Monday was the first day of in-person early voting in Georgia. Democrat Stacey Abrams and Republican Brian Kemp are running for governor.

The senior center director asked the senior residents to get off the bus, said LaTosha Brown, a co-founder of Black Voters Matter.

“We knew it was an intimidation tactic,” Brown told the Atlanta newspaper. “It was really unnecessary. These are grown people.”

Officials felt uncomfortable allowing senior center patrons to leave in a bus with “an unknown third party,” County Administrator Adam Brett said.

“No seniors at the Jefferson County senior center were denied their right to vote,” Brett said.

The seniors planned to cast their ballots later, the

newspaper reported.

The county is about 140 miles (225 kilometers) southeast of Atlanta.

Access to the polls has been a contentious issue in Georgia's race for governor, a closely watched contest.

Civil rights organizations are suing Kemp, the Georgia Secretary of State. The federal lawsuit accuses Kemp's office of preventing minority voters from registering ahead of the Nov. 6 election.

Abrams would become the nation's first black female governor if she wins. Recent public polling indicates the race is a dead heat.

An analysis by The Associated Press recently found over 53,000 voter registration applications sitting in pending status. Georgia's population is about 32 percent black, but the list of voter registrations on hold with Kemp's office is nearly 70 percent black.

Kemp's office has blamed the racial disparity on the New Georgia Project, a voter registration group founded

by Abrams in 2013. It says the organization was sloppy in registering voters, and that it submitted inadequate forms for a batch of applicants that was predominantly black.

Dickerson’s Has a New Menu at 29 at Rocco’s Tavern

By Cameron Buford whatsgoodinsports.com Football and food have gone hand and hand for many years now! Many sports bars across the country pride themselves in serving good food, while their customers enjoy football at their facility, well Rocco’s is no different.

Just recently, burgeoning Rocco’s Tavern has partnered with former Ram great Eric Dickerson. They have recently introduced new food concepts commemorating the Hall of Famer’s record-breaking accomplishments.

Eric’s achievements throughout his illustrious career captured the minds of sports fan across America. Whether it was leading the ‘Pony Express’ to national prominence, or establishing the NFL’s Rookie Rushing Record, or even setting the NFL’s Single Season Rushing Record that following season. Dickerson’s game set himself apart from any competition. Each of those records still stands nearly 35 five years later!

“29 at Rocco’s Tavern” was introduced to the patrons of Rocco’s Tavern at the beginning of football season.

Rocco’s Tavern introduced the new concept dubbed “29 at Rocco’s Tavern,” in commemoration to Rams Running Back Eric Dickerson, who wore #29 throughout his Hall of Fame NFL career. This new concept can be found at each of Rocco’s location throughout the southland including Studio City, Westwood, Culver City, Old Town Pasadena, as well as the 901 Bar & Grill.

Even with all his accomplishments, Dickerson still sees himself as a young boy that he was growing up in Sealy, Texas. Most of the new concepts have been catered to the dishes he grew up with. A fired red snapper dish with fries and Texas cold slaw called Sealy Texas Snapper. Fried shrimp with fires and Texas Slaw. They will have a new 29 Burger, which is swiss cheese, spicy mustard, red onions, and tomato, and a classic Pony Express Pizza made up off cheese, pepperoni, sausage, and Jalapenos. Also being

introduced is a dish of spicy chicken wings will be called “2105,” now everyone will know the exact Single Season Rushing Record Dickerson set years ago.

The So Cal Rams Booster Club will also be a part of the partnership additionally Rams fans from all across Southern California can join the Booster Club and other Rams fans at either “29 at Rocco’s Tavern” locations.

Traditional food and beverages will be available for other NFL fans as well. All other NFL games can be seen as every Rocco’s Tavern each week.

“Who better to partner with than the greatest football player in Los Angeles history.” said Rocco’s co-owner Leo Amari “If we consider ourselves the premier sports bar in the Los Angeles area.” Dickerson graciously mentioned that “I am thrilled to be associated with a sports bar as prominent as Rocco’s Tavern,” he said. “To think that food combinations I helped dream up will be served to the greatest football fans in the United States, it doesn’t get any better than this.”

Currently working as Vice President of Business Development for the Los Angeles Rams Dickerson, in addition to being an NFL analyst for FS1/FOX national TV, is gracious about this opportunity to develop these new food concepts. Brown NNPA Newswire Correspondent Five Centuries ago – on August 18, 1518 to be exact – the King of Spain, Charles I, issued a charter authorizing the transportation of slaves direct from Africa to the Americas, according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, or UNESCO. Five hundred years later, the devastating effects remain.

Some argue, however, that slavery continues to exist – in that far too many African Americans possess a slave’s mentality. Books on the topic are a plenty.

Harvard psychiatrist Alvin Poussaint wrote extensively about the high suicide rates among black males which doubled over a 15-year period beginning in 1980.

“African-American young men may see the afterlife as a better place,” Poussaint wrote in his book, “Lay My Burden Down: Suicide and the Mental Health Crisis among African-Americans.”

In her book, “Black Pain: It Just Looks Like We’re Not Hurting,” famed author and social worker, Terrie M. Williams, writes about the “high toll of hiding the pain associated with the black experience” on mental health.

Portland State University scholar Joy DeGruy also tried explaining the slave mentality in her controversial theory, “Post-Traumatic Slave Syndrome.”

The Urban Dictionary and other works says that a slave mentality is one of feeling inferior or of feeling lost without hope, a feeling that we do not have the power to significantly alter our own circumstances.

“Another sad symptom of having a slave mentality is believing that white people are superior,” writes Kuuleme T. Stephens noted in her blog.“A person conditioned to quietly, and without objection, accept harmful circumstances for themselves as the natural order of things. …They’re also conditioned to accept their master’s view and beliefs, about themselves, and strive to get others, within their group, to accept their master’s view.

“I often hear people make the claim that blacks were better off when they were slaves. I myself have been known to say such things when people piss me off and respond out of ignorance to a posting or article. My reason for making such an argument is if black Americans are not going to stop living in the past and blaming other for their problems, we will never move forward as a people. …To maintain a belief that you are owed something and entitled to things when you are doing nothing to help yourself is absurd.

“To stay ignorant as a lifestyle choice and have others (the government) take care of you and tell you what to do is exactly what the slaves did, and some continued to do even after they were freed. …My great grandmother, whose father and grandfather were slaves, has a slavery mentality because they were raised by slaves and their opinions and beliefs were passed down as such.”

Even now, millions of Americans of recognizably African descent languish in societal backwaters, according to historians and experts on slavery. And, the dichotomy that exists between those who view living in America as a struggle to survive and those that see it as a land of opportunity has driven a wedge between many in the African American community.

“We’re absolutely still slaves today,” said Sean XG Mitchell, a Hip-Hop activist and author of several books on the black experience, including “The African American Spiritual Practice of Seven.”

“We’re the only race of people who do not have a cultural orientation regarding our identity. Every powerful and successful race and/or ethnic group of people have an orientation that centers around language, education, religion, names and customs which is where their unity, self-respect, pride and dignity-the prerequisite of powercomes from,” he said.

As a result of slavery, African Americans do not have a cultural orientation that centers around their historical experience as a people. “We see the outcome in the deficiency of our social and economic development. To a certain extent, we’ve been fighting racism and injustice all wrong which is why it’s been an ongoing issue for over [500] years. Real empowerment comes from culture and until we understand and embrace what it means to be an African people will always be slaves,” Mitchell said.

“I believe there is a dividing legacy of slavery that have pitted certain segments of the black community against each other,” Mitchell continues. “We have an obvious color barrier between light skin and dark skin, creating somewhat of a caste system that gives privilege to the lighter shade in most cases whether we’re referring to employment opportunities or relationships.

“It’s all a fallout of slavery because slaves often were pitted against each other as a means of preventing unity.”

During slavery, the dark-skinned blacks worked in

the fields while light-skinned blacks worked in the house, hence the terms “field Negroes” and “house Negroes.”

“It got so bad, that not only did the slave owner, who was often responsible for the lighter shade of brown his slaves had, give lighter-skinned blacks more respect, but so did the dark-skinned blacks,” blogger Jasmyne Cannick writes in an opinion column for NPR. This was best illustrated in Spike Lee’s 1988 film “School Daze” in the scene set in a beauty salon between the “jiggaboos,” the darker-skinned blacks with “nappy” hair, and the “wannabes,” the lighter-skinned blacks with “straight” and often weaved hair.

“You know, I can’t think of one time that I witnessed or heard of white children taunting each other for being paler than the next, but I can think of numerous occasions where I have seen black children teasing each other for being ‘too black,’” Cannick said.

“And while our lighter skin shades can be attributed to the Massuh’s preference for his female black slaves over his own wife, we can’t blame the Massuh for us continuing to feed into the hype that light is good and dark is bad,” she said.

Post-slavery, post-Jim Crow, and post-Civil Rights, African Americans haven’t reached their full potential in part because of an acute lack of effort with too many wallowing in self-pity, say those who’ve argued against reparations.

Walter Williams, an economics professor at George Mason University in Washington, D.C. and an opponent of reparations, suggested that African-Americans have actually benefited from the legacy of slavery.

“Almost every black American’s income is higher as a result of being born in the United States than any country in Africa,” Williams, who is black, told ABC News.

“Most black Americans are middle-class,” Williams said, claiming that the U.S. has made “significant” investments in African Americans since the slave trade ended.

“The American people have spent $6.1 trillion in the name of fighting poverty,” he said. “We’ve had all kinds of programs trying to address the problems of discrimination.

America has gone a long way.”

Countering that argument, others said America has continued to do a disservice to black Americans, prolifically using the criminal justice system as tool akin to slavery that almost assures a lifetime of dependency on taxpayers.

“My expertise is the criminal justice system, which has long been used to intimidate, oppress, and abuse AfricanAmericans. While officially our laws today are color-blind, which is different from the time of slavery, as implemented and used they aren’t,” said Roy L. Steinheimer Jr., a professor of Law at Washington and Lee University in Virginia.

What about black on black crime?

According to an evidence brief from the Vera Institute of Justice, titled, “An Unjust Burden: The Disparate Treatment of Black Americans in the Criminal Justice System,” and a report from the Bureau of Justice Statistics found that most violence occurs between victims and offenders of the same race, regardless of race.

The rate of both black-on-black and white-on-white nonfatal violence declined 79 percent between 1993 and 2015. The number of homicides involving both a black victim and black perpetrator fell from 7,361 in 1991 to 2,570 in 2016.

The issue isn’t the crime, it’s the selective disproportionately harsher punishment and sentencing of African Americans.

“Some of the laws, such as those disenfranchising convicted felons, have their origin, if not in the immediate aftermath of the civil war, then in the era that saw the emergence of the KKK and white supremacy. They were clearly intended to keep African-Americans and likely, though to a lesser extent poor whites, from the ballot box,” Steinheimer said.

Meanwhile, some of the newer laws that have negatively affected African-Americans still appear to result from some underlying beliefs that go back to the times of slavery.

“Interestingly that thinking has survived even during times of mass migration, which is presumably indicative of how deep-seated it is in American culture and law,” the professor continued.

The “broad scope of the criminal justice system reinforces the wealth disparity between white and black by making those caught up in it ever poorer and serves to drive even some of the better-of people caught up in it into poverty,” Steinheimer said.

“The economic impact resulting from slavery therefore gets magnified and reinforced by our criminal justice system, which increasingly stacks fines and fees,” he said.

In cities across the country, and in rural areas of the Old South, the situation of the black underclass and, increasingly, of the black lower working classes is bad and getting worse. Simply put, the playing field has never been level for black Americans and that has only worsened the mental health of the community. “No well-informed person denies this, though there is debate over what can and should be done about it,” Loury said.

“Nor do serious people deny that the crime, drug addiction, family breakdown, unemployment, poor school performance, welfare dependency, and general decay in these communities constitute a blight on our society virtually unrivaled in scale and severity by anything to be found elsewhere in the industrial West,” he said.

“Slavery is one of the foundational pillars of American society, propping up the nation starting in the earliest days of the Republic and touching the lives of everyone in America. And its legacy has been long lasting,” said Hasan Jeffries, a James Madison Montpelier historian and history professor at Ohio State University who specializes in contemporary black politics.

“The deeply rooted belief in white supremacy that justified slavery survived its abolition in 1865 and undergird the new systems of African American labor exploitation and social control, namely Jim Crow, that sought to replace what had been lost as a result of emancipation,” Jeffries said.

As a result, slavery has caused certain symptoms of dysfunction in the African community, which has been reinforced in each generation, according to historians at the African Holocaust Network.

The legacy of slavery has promoted and nursed the direct association between being African and being inferior. Being African and being unequal. Being African and being incapable and less worthy.

It also promotes ways of thinking which continue to impede growth and development, such as cultivating dependence and reactive behaviors, and more content to be at best an observer complaining about the world, instead of being a change agent in the world.

“The deterioration of the black American family is staggering,” Stephens said.

“If you ask a young black American what they want to be when they grow up, most will say they want to be a rapper/singer, football player, basketball player, or baseball player, and that is if they can tell you what they would like to be at all,” she said.

“No one tells them that only 0.03 percent make it to pro basketball, 0.08 percent make it pro football, and 0.45 percent make it pro baseball.

“We have a 40 percent dropout rate, for every 100,000 black men in the U.S., 4,777 are in prison or jail; for every 100,000 black American women, there are 743 in jail or prison, and 72 percent of black American women, and teens are unwed mothers.”

Historians at the James Madison Montpelier in Virginia said that it’s no accident that the U.S. Constitution opens with a message of inclusivity, establishing “justice” and ensuring “domestic tranquility” for the people.

However, it’s what that most famous preamble – and, indeed, the rest of the document – doesn’t address that’s more telling: The Constitution’s authors omit the vital distinction between their view of the differences between persons and property and, in doing so, ultimately protect one of history’s most oppressive institutions: Slavery.

Bruins Spell Relief with S-P-E-I-G-H-T

By Earl Heath Contributing Sports Writer When UCLA quarterback Wilton Speight came in the team did not miss a beat during its 31- 30 win over Arizona. Replacing injured freshman Dorian ThompsonRobinson the transfer QB engineered several drives to help the Bruins (2-5, 2-2 Conference) stay in the hunt for the Pac12 South race. A USC loss to UTAH gave PAC-12 south teams at least two losses.

Thompson-Robinson had helped the Bruins jump out to a 10-0 first half lead. He connected with Kazmeir Allen on a 16 yard pass with 9:51 to go in the first have.

After an injury to DTR Speight stepped in and hit Devin Asiasi with a 24 yard strike to give the Bruins a 17-7 lead in the 1:34 mark of the half. Speight finished the day going 17 of 27 for 204 yards and no interceptions.

Running back Joshua Kelley had a 28 yard run in the fourth period to give the Bruins the lead for good 31-24.

That scoring jaunt helped him reach the century mark for

the fourth consecutive game. He tallied 136 yards on 31 carries on the night. That enabled him to be the first Bruin rusher to be on that path since Tyler Ebell in 2002.

Rhett Rodriquez led the Wildcats offense filling in for injured starter Khalil Tate (Serra High). He completed 15 of 24 passes for 231 and two interceptions.

The defensive made some clutch plays in the win Quentin Lake had a big interception in the end-zone to stop a Wildcat threat. Veteran Darnay Holmes ran down the Wildcat speedster J.J. Taylor after a forty plus yard run and knocked the ball out at the 10 yard line and pounced on it for a touch back.

Adarius Pickett, Krys Barnes, Elijah Gates and Holmes all had five tackles each.The Bruins made things a lot tougher on themselves by committing a season high 12 penalties for 103 yards. The defense gave up 508 yards of Offense. NEXT UP: Bruins host UTAH at the Rose Bowl Friday night.

Walter Camp National Players of the Week Named

By Earl Heath Contributing Sports Writer Purdue’s running back D.J. Knox and Houston’s linebacker Austin Robinson were named winners of the Walter Camp Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week.

Knox rushed for 138 yards and three touchdowns as Purdue took down second-ranked Ohio State, 49-20. The senior running back from Fairburn, Georgia scored on runs of 1, 42 and 40 yards as the Boilermakers’ recorded their biggest upset since 1984. With the victory, Purdue improved to 4-3, 3-1 in the Big Ten Conference. Knox is the first Purdue player to receive the award since Kawann Short. (Nov. 13, 2015)

With his efforts Knox reminds many of former Perdue stand out Leroy Keys. Keyes was the teams first Walter Camp All-American in 1968 and two way player in the 1968 Rose Bowl.

On the Defensive side it was Austin Robinson of Houston who recorded a career-high 21 tackles (11 solo), including 4.5 for losses, and two quarterback sacks. His Houston Cougars defeated Navy, 49-36. With the victory, the Cougars improved to 6-1, 3-0 in the American Athletic Conference. The Senior Linebacker from Pearland, Texas is the eighth Cougar player to earn the Player of the week award since 2004 and the first since Steve Taylor (November 2016).

Champions and great athletes of the past always return. One week you have All-American linebacker Jerry Robinson or Walter Camp All-American Kenny Easley.

Other Bruin Alumi who have come back to visit this

season so far include Nikki Blue (Women’s Basketball), Amanda Freed (softball), Debra Tracy (Cheerleader) now working with Fox, and Stella Sampras Webster (women’s tennis).

You are bound to run into any one of them at a Bruins game. It’s more than just football, its an event.

South Carolina State Coach Prepares to Exit Alma Mater

By Stacy M. Brown NNPA Newswire Correspondent @StacyBrownMedia In South Carolina sports lore, no program is more revered by African Americans than the South Carolina State University Bulldogs. And, not many coaches are as beloved as Oliver “Buddy” Pough.

When the Bulldogs face Delaware State on Saturday, Oct. 20 at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium, it’s quite possibly the last homecoming game for Pough, who’s not expected to return to the sidelines next year.

“Well, we haven’t officially called it quits yet, but my contract is done,” Pough told NNPA Newswire this week.

He said it’s been an up and down experience, first playing for and then coaching at his Alma Mater. Like he’s well-known for, Pough’s characterization of an “up and down” experience is modest.

He’s spent nearly 30 years at South Carolina State as a student, athlete, assistant coach and head coach.

“We won 16 Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference championships since the conference started in 1970,” said Willie Jeffries, a former Bulldogs head coach and college football hall of famer.

“That’s more than triple the championships of the next school in line and Buddy is responsible for 12 of those championships,” said Jeffries, Pough’s mentor.

“Buddy played in two of those championship seasons, he participated in four as an assistant coach and he’s won six himself as head coach,” Jeffries said.

Pough entered this year, his 17th and possible final season as head coach of the Bulldogs, with an impressive 120-64 record, including 94-33 in the MEAC. At least a half dozen of his players have gone onto the NFL. His overall conference record at South Carolina State trails only Jeffries.

“He’s nine wins shy of the record and I was hoping he would stay on and break the record,” said Jeffries, who dines weekly with Pough and the two serve on several boards and committees together.

“I would view that as keeping it in the family.”

Pough said he hasn’t completely closed the door on a return, but as of now, he doesn’t expect to be back.

“I’ve had the opportunity to head one of the most important part of our university,” Pough said.

“Football in South Carolina is pretty big stuff and you, as head coach, are given the responsibility that’s so near and dear to people so you want to do the best job possible, respect the institution and uphold the tradition.”

Prior to taking the reins at South Carolina State, Pough spent five seasons as an assistant at the University Of South Carolina (USC), the last three as a running backs coach under legendary coach Lou Holtz.

During his stint at USC, he helped build the Gamecocks into one of the top offensive teams in the Southeastern Conference.

USC made back-to-back appearances in the Outback

Bowl in 2000 and 2001. Before going to USC, Pough was one of the top high school coaches in the Palmetto State, leading Fairfield-Central to a perfect 15-0 record in 1996 and claiming the Class AAA state title, according to the school’s website.

He earned South Carolina High School League Coach-of-the-Year honors for his efforts, the first of such three honors. Pough also had coaching stints at Keenan High in Columbia, where he built the Raiders into one of the top Class AAA teams in the state.

In his final two seasons (1973 and 1974) as a player for South Carolina State, the Orangeburg native and former offensive lineman helped the Bulldogs to a 15-7-1 record, a league crown and back-to-back postseason appearances seasons.

After graduating in 1975, he joined the staff at nearby Orangeburg-Wilkinson High (1976-79), before returning to his alma mater as an assistant coach in 1979.

The Bulldogs made consecutive trips to the Div. 1-AA playoffs (1981 & 1982) during his tenure as an assistant.

“I’ve tried to encourage young men to do good in school and to be good and respectable citizens and to give back to the community,” Pough said.

“That’s my most important role here which is to encourage these young me to be good citizens and I never sugar coat anything,” he said.

Those are traits Jeffries helped to instill in him.

“When my father died in the 1980s, Coach Jeffries became that person that I leaned on the most,” Pough said.

“We are still close. He’s in and out of my house and I’m in and out of his. It’s been a special relationship that’s lasted since we met in the early 1970s when he was head coach and I was a sophomore payer.”

Jeffries continues to be Pough’s biggest supporter.

“I want him to stay. I don’t know that there’s a coach out there that’s as good a football coach as Buddy is,” Jeffries said.

“He came up under me and I could always depend on him. He was a starting offensive linemen for me and he played real well. He majored in mathematics and that told me that this was a smart kid who was a stickler for detail.”

Jeffries called Pough a great technician who’s fantastic at teaching the fundamentals of football.

“He coaches his coaches,” Jeffries said.

Pough said his love for Bulldogs football at times has him fantasizing about his playing days.

When told that NNPA advertising executive Steven Larkin recalled a key block he made as a player to help the Bulldogs win a title, Pough laughed.

“I think I was a lot better player in my mind than I actually was,” he said.

“I was a short fat offensive linemen who probably should have just been happy to be out there. I had a great time and if I could go back to college and play at South Carolina State, I would.”

over the years with other coaches, and my players,” Pough said. “I’ve had a great relationship with faculty members, teachers … you rub off on the association that you have.”

If this is his last hurrah as head coach, Pough said he knows the ideal way to say goodbye.

“I want to win the rest of my games, that would be great,” he said.

“But, what I want most is for us to play as good as we can and for all the guys to do good in school. I want to continue treating guys the right way as we go off into the sunset.

RIHANNA SAYS NO TO SUPER BOWL Rihanna said she’s showing solidarity with Colin Kaepernick and NFL players who have been protesting racial disparities and police violence against blacks and other minorities by kneeling during the playing of the national anthem.

Reportedly, the pop princess not only said, “No,” but her words were more like, “Hell no.”

Rihanna said she’s showing solidarity with Colin Kaepernick and NFL players who have been protesting racial disparities and police violence against blacks and other minorities by kneeling during the playing of the national anthem.

Rihanna’s reps didn’t immediately respond to requests from the NNPA Newswire for comment and an NFL spokesman said he wasn’t authorized to talk about the Super Bowl halftime show.

“Rihanna was the front-runner for next year’s Super Bowl halftime show,” NBC’s Today Show reported, quoting an unnamed source. The Network also reported that Rihanna’s friend and fellow superstar Pink also turned the NFL down in support of Kaepernick.

“CBS and the NFL reached out to Rihanna first, who after thinking about the offer, decided to pass due to the NFL and the situation regarding players kneeling,” The Today Show reported, again quoting a source.

“The offer and exposure would have been great for Rihanna as she’s planning a new album and tour but she stuck to what’s right in her eyes,” the source added.

The refusal by Rihanna, whose hits include “Umbrella,” “Work,” and “Diamonds,” likely came as a shock to NFL and CBS officials because the Super Bowl halftime show is the biggest stage in pop music and routinely commands an audience of more than 100 million people.

Some halftime show performances have been legendary. Some were great and others not-so-good.

Historically, the Superbowl halftime show has helped to boost the music and CD sales of artists like, Prince, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Beyoncé, U2, Madonna, The Rolling Stones, and Bruce Springsteen.

Social media exploded in support of Rihanna after she turned down the biggest stage in the world.

“I’m so here for @Rihanna turning down Super Bowl halftime to support @Kaepernick7. If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything,” wrote Twitter user @ DaPrincess.

Tweeted @okayplayer: “In case you need another reason to love @Rihanna …” @Shereeny tweeted that Rihanna was “a true queen” for turning down the Super Bowl in support of Kaepernick.

By Stacy M. Brown NNPA Newswire Correspondent @StacyBrownMedia Since Bill Cosby was sentenced to prison more than 20 days ago, tabloid stories have run the gamut of speculation, inuendo and outright sensationalism.

No, both his publicists and jail officials say, he wasn’t attacked with a chicken patty or a hotdog.

No, he didn’t get pushed or fall down a flight of stairs – there aren’t any stairs to fall down where Cosby is being held. And he has not asked talk show queen Wendy Williams to visit him.

The biggest tabloid story that’s made the rounds is that Camille Cosby, his wife of more than a half century, has filed for divorce and taking the couple’s estimated $400 million fortune and bolted.

In his first non-attorney visit at the newly constructed State Correctional Institute Phoenix, not terribly far from his Montgomery County, Pennsylvania estate, Cosby was surprised to welcome his longtime publicists Andrew Wyatt and Ebonee Benson on Monday.

Camille Cosby had arranged the visit and wanted it to be a surprise.

“You know, a person says that they are okay, but you really need to lay eyes on them. At least that’s how I feel,” said Benson, who along with Wyatt spoke of their visit exclusively with NNPA Newswire and radio host Frankie Darcell of WDAS and iHeart Radio in Philadelphia.

The pair said they wanted to share their visit with African Americans and on platforms that would allow their comments to air unfettered.

They said Cosby’s predicament is bigger than the comedian and should be vital to all black Americans who have been victimized by what has proven to be a one-sided Criminal Justice System.

Wyatt said Cosby got a kick out of hearing about published reports that he was attacked by other inmates with a chicken patty and a hot dog and that he’s mistreated.

“He laughed,” Wyatt said. “The staff has been nothing but professional and none of that stuff has happened.”

“He said it’s just that the mainstream media is continuing its efforts to try and stop him from getting the facts out. He said to look at the facts, ‘I shouldn’t be here, but I’m here. But, I will be able to write about it, write music about it. They can put you away, but they can’t take away your memory, your life experience.’”

Sporting a full beard and appearing in great health, Cosby told Wyatt and Benson that his imprisonment has afforded him an opportunity to continue to preach about social justice.

“He has been able to speak with other inmates about their situation and impart advice,” Wyatt said.

“Mr. Cosby loves hearing other stories of the inmates whom he calls residents. It’s that psychology part of him that takes them into his laboratory. He tells them, ‘You don’t have to swear or curse, this is what you do.’ He’s doing what he always has on the lecture circuit.

“Mr. Cosby said Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr., and Nelson Mandela helped him prepare for this chapter of his life. He said they told him that if he was going to continue to fight for civil rights, something like this was

bound to happen and he’s been prepared for it and he knows he’s in prison not for rape, but for infidelity. He knows he’s innocent and he’s kept his head up.”

Wyatt and Benson said Camille Cosby has continued to direct the legal team on her husband’s behalf.

It was Camille Cosby who ultimately made the call to replace her husband’s former attorneys and she regularly plots strategy.

Cosby, who grew up in the Philadelphia projects, also described his living conditions.

“He said the bed lies on thick steel or concrete and he’s allowed to make phone calls, but he’s still being assessed right now so he’s not in general population,” Wyatt said.

“He follows the rules and respects the guards. They’ve given him a cane and, because he’s blind, they have a trustee to help him.”

As in nearly every maximum-security prison, the facility is surrounded by razor-wire, gates and concrete walls. However, because it’s new, there is a refreshingly nice look to it.

He has hot water and the ability to shower.

And, Cosby continues to fight for his freedom.

“He says we, his team, are part of what he calls this revolution,” Wyatt said.

“When you look at his case, they convicted him with no evidence, no DNA evidence, no forensic evidence and on the word of a woman who isn’t even American.” Both Wyatt and Benson said Cosby remains confident in his pending appeal. “He has never been in any legal trouble before, so this is brand new for him,” Benson said.

“At 81 years-old, he’s never had any problems with the law, never any legal issues until this case but he’s positive and talking to people and he’s concerned not about himself, but about others who might find themselves in his position,” she said.

Wyatt said his boss has grown a full beard and when asked whether he and Benson felt compelled to want to groom him or encourage him to shave, both Wyatt and Benson said no.

“He’s good. He looks really good,” Benson said.

“He’s sharp and he talked about what his team is doing on the outside and his wife, who has been so supportive,” Wyatt said.

“He’s doing great, disregard what you’re reading. We want people to really know that this man is an American citizen and he hasn’t been treated like an American citizen.

He’s behind bars for infidelity.

“The reason he says, and we say, that this is bigger than Bill Cosby is, for other black people, this could be your son, your father, your family member. They are trying to change the laws. Sexual assault is the only crime you can be convicted of with no evidence and no proof and we’ve seen the justice system and how it works with recent major things happening with [Supreme Court Justice] Brett Kavanaugh, or Harvey Weinstein.

“The judicial system is not the same for people of color. This is about civil rights. If people don’t start paying attention, a lot more freedoms are going to be taken away.

Remember, just last week a white woman accused a little black boy of sexual assault. Pay attention. Stay woke.”

Taste of Soul-Fun, Food, Family and Entertainment

By Ricky Richardson Letter to the Editor Los Angeles- Bakewell Media has brought it on once again. I’m speaking of the 13th Annual Taste of Soul. This huuuuge festival, the largest street festival in Los Angeles, and perhaps, in the nation for that matter, was held on Saturday, October 20th.

The Taste of Soul is a family-friendly event, as was held on “The Shaw” as Crenshaw is affectionately known as, between Stocker Boulevard to the South, and Rodeo Road on the North.

Bakewell Media loaded up all the bases with some heavy hitter, whose performances are known for knocking it out the park.

The first based featured the KJLH Choir, Nick Grant, Pullman Porters, Gemaine, En Vogue, Jussie Smollett, Vivian Green, Ready for the World and Macy Gray on the 102.3 KJLH Stage sponsored by Toyota.

The second base line-up consisted of The StarQuest Singing Competition, Crenshaw Drumline, Teddy Riley, Ginuwine, Chante Moore, Kurtis Blow and Melanie Fiona.

Third base brought The Spirit of the Lord to the forefront. The Brenda Marsh-Mitchell Gospel Stage sponsored by McDonald’s hosted the Inspiration Celebration Gospel Tour with Ricky Dillard, Centron Jones, Todd Dulaney, Donald Lawrence, JJ Hairston and Deitrick Haddon.

Bringing it all home were talent of The 94.7 The Wave Stage sponsored by Budweiser. I was posted up in the batters cage, as usual at the latter stage.

The day got underway with DJ Shell mixing it up on the ones and twos with a plethora of old school and new school jams that kept the crowd moving and grooving in between acts. If you a fan of baseball, you will recognize this as “The 7th Inning Stretch.”

Radio personalities from 94.7 The Wave Deborah Howell, Frankie Ross, Greg Mack, Pat Prescott were in attendance to introduce and announce upcoming acts.

Chosen Recovery Gospel Group/Chosen Recovery Gospel Singers made a return engagement to open the show. If memory serves me right, this inspirational group have performed every year at The Taste of Soul since it’s inception. That’s reason enough to Give God the Glory.

Chosen Recovery Gospel Group used their Angelic voices to Lift up the name of God, in so doing, inspired many in the audience.

Sean Michael is a singer and songwriter, known as being an “emotional artist.” He laid it all out on “She Still Belongs to Someone Else,” Picture You, Picture Me Loving You,” “Let’s Get Personal,” and concluded his set with an original tune “Girl You Are” from his upcoming project Falling In Love With Sean Michael.

Cultural Soul is another local group returning to perform on the 94.7 The Wave Stage sponsored by Budweiser. They entertained the crowd with some soulful tunes mixed with infectious reggae rhythms, and Afrobeats in a shout to the late great Fela Kuti.

On Tour was invited back with open arms and open hearts. It is hard to believe that this group only unites each year to perform at The Taste of Soul. They have enough talent and potential to perform at various functions throughout the Greater Los Angeles area and throughout the State of California. On Tour superbly performs a diverse selections of cover tunes to delight the audience.

They opened their set with “Lovely Day,” and continued with “Just Friends,” “My Girl,” “Just My Imagination,” “This is How We Do It” this song can show how the party hearty people get down in Los Angeles.

Danny Bakewell Sr., was joined on stage by local, state and federal elective officials to thank everyone for coming out to one of the main signature events for the City of Los Angeles.

Marcio Donaldson was the 2018 Adult StarQuest Winner for the 7th Annual Star Quest Singing Competition. He had a rousing debut performance on the 94.7 The Wave Stage sponsored by Budweiser as he sang “If You Really Love Me” by Stevie Wonder.

Head Krack Dish Nation was a surprise standout performer who hit it out the park with the bases loaded while in the spotlight. He wowed the crowd free-styling to opened his set. He then performed two original tunes “Abracadabra,” and “All the Way Lit” the latter tune could serve as the final analysis for the 13th Annual Taste of Soul.

Jody Watley is a singer/songwriter who attended Dorsey High School in Los Angeles. Jody Watley’s set was another highlight of the day. Her captivating performance included the tunes “Don’t You Want Me,” “I Want Your Love,” “Your Love Keep Working on Me,” “Waiting in Vain” by Bob Marley with two beautiful Brazilian DancersClarissa and Liz. She took the crowd and I down memory lane with the tunes “Take That to The Bank,” and “Night to Remember,” from her days as part of the trio Shalamar.

She finished her set with a timeless hit “Looking for a New Love.”

Good Day LA, FOX TV Special Guests Elex Michaelson, Rita Garcia, Marcia Quban and Megan Colarossi came onstage to say hello the crowd.

Erin Stevenson is a popular singer/songwriter who has performed as a backup vocalist for a who’s who of the music industry. She heeded the word of God and stepped out on Faith to sang her truth. Se opened her set with a fabulous rendering of “Square Business” by Teena Marie and “Never Too Much” by Luther Vandross. She concluded her set with two original tunes “Hangin” and “Juicy.”

Sister Sledge, one of the most iconic female groups of the late 70’s cleared the bases with some of their greatest hits “He’s Is the Greatest Dancer,” “We Are Family,” “Got to Love Somebody” to name a few.
