A year ago there was a huge buzz surrounding Lakers Media Day with the arrive of LeBron James to Los Angeles being matched with a group of young up and coming and rather unproven Laker teammates. This year there was still a buzz, but that buzz was LeBron being matched with another superstar in 6’10” Anthony Davis to make one of the top (if not the top) duo in the NBA this year with a team full of established veterans. Last years buzz was that of the unknown, this year the buzz was that of exception to not only be back in the playoffs for the first time in 5 seasons but to be in the conversation of NBA title contenders.

LeBron seemed right at home with the LA media, talking about how he spent his summer not playing into late June for the first time since 2009. I found it interesting with how you would think most superstar players are wired

and how competitive LeBron is that by not being in the playoffs he would not want to watch any playoff games. It was the exact opposite. “I didn’t miss one game by the way throughout the whole post season, not one.” said James.

Everyone obviously was interested to hear from LeBron on playing with Anthony Davis since he is finally officially a Laker. LeBron spoke about Anthony Davis being the main focus while he is on the floor and being able to play off of him. LeBron said, “We all know how great Anthony Davis is, and if we aren’t playing through Anthony Davis while he is on the floor then it makes no sense to have him on the floor, because he is that great!”

Davis spoke about being able to play off LeBron as well. “I think we will feed off each other tremendously….I think him demanding double teams will open it up for me to more one on ones and single coverage.” One thing that consistent from the two stars along with the rest of the roster and and staff was “The Process”. This team will not be caught up on the hype of this new media and fan made “Lakers vs Clipper” rivalry. Everyone spoke to just taking it a day at a time and not looking further than the first day of training camp.

The only major injury concern outside of Talen Horton-Tucker (right foot) and Jordan Caroline (surgery on his left 5th metatarsal) was that of Lakers third year forward Kyle Kuzma. He had a stress reaction to his left foot while training with USA Basketball this past summer.

He is progressing well he says and showed no visible signs that wasn’t the case while walking around Media Day bringing some light heartedness with him taking pictures of his own on a throwback disposable camera that he posted the pictures a few days later on his Instagram page.

Some of the my biggest questions coming from Lakers Media Day would be: How will minutes be distributed with a nice deep roaster of talent? How will Dwight Howard be in his 2nd stint in the Purple & Gold? He definitely looks in good physical condition and has said all the right things as far as being a valuable role player in whatever role that will be. Who starts at Point Guard and Center? One thing is for sure, the Lakers has high expectations again and I’m sure Lebron and the Lakers organization wouldn’t have it any other way. Waters Announces LAX $35.6M Grant

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Maxine Waters (CA-43), Chair of the House Financial Services Committee, released the following statement today announcing that the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) awarded a $35.6 million grant to the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) in her congressional district, as part of its Airport Improvement Program (AIP): “I am proud to announce that the FAA has awarded a $35.6 million airport improvement grant to LAX, the third busiest airport in the United States, which is located in my congressional district.

“This grant will be used to construct a taxiway to connect the runway complexes on the north and south sides of the airport, thus allowing airplanes to safely and efficiently move to and from their assigned gates. When completed, this new taxiway will improve efficiency and reduce congestion, taxi times and wait times for pilots and passengers. It will also benefit the community surrounding the airport by reducing harmful emissions.

7 Ways CA’s New Rent Cap Law Affects You

the city of more than 884,000 people now lives in public housing.

Like San Francisco, the high cost of buying and renting in homes has contributed to a homelessness crisis in every major city in California and has forced middle class residents in urban areas to relocate to distant suburbs, or smaller cities and rural towns inland. Between 2005 and 2010, for example, more than 54,000 African Americans moved out of Los Angeles to surrounding areas or to other states, mostly in the South.

“California has the fifth largest Black population in the United States, with an estimated 2,571,208 people who identify as Black,” wrote Mark Ridley-Thomas, a member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, in an open letter to Gov. Newsom earlier this year.

“In the moral crisis that is homelessness,” Ridley-Thomas continued, “Black Californians make up nearly seven percent of the state’s general population yet are nearly 30 percent of the homeless population. Californians are struggling to get by. And Black Californians, facing a host of upstream factors that impact their experience, have a particularly distinct struggle.”

Responding to the high cost of living in California’s cities, Gov. Newsom and state legislators have been pushing a number of measures to remedy the crisis.

In February, Assemblymember David Chiu (D-San Francisco), along with colleagues Richard Bloom (D-Carlsbad), Rob Bonta (D-Sacramento), Timothy Grayson (D-Sacramento) and Buffy Wicks (D-Sacramento) introduced AB 1482 or the Tenant Protection Act of 2019.

The measure limits the amount landlords can hike rents within one year to 5 percent, plus local inflation. The Assembly voted in favor of the legislation in May and the Senate passed it in September.

Gov. Newsom says he will sign it.

“In this year’s State of the State address, I asked the Legislature to send me a strong renter protection package,” said the governor after the Senate’s yes vote in September.

“Today, they sent me the strongest package in America.

These anti-gouging and eviction protections will help families afford to keep a roof over their heads, and they will provide California with important new tools to combat our state’s broader housing and affordability crisis.”

Although Chiu prefers to call the legislation a “rent cap” bill instead of a rent control bill, it includes a number of provisions other than the limit on rent increases that tenants and landlords in California should know about.

Here are seven of those things: 1. In California cities that already have local rent control laws in place, AB 1482 will only apply to property that is not already covered by those measures. The only areas in the state that currently have some form of a rental cap are the City of Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Santa Monica, Berkeley, Campbell, East Palo Alto, Fremont, Hayward, Los Gatos, Oakland, Palm Springs, San Francisco, San Jose, Thousand Oaks and unincorporated Los Angeles County.

2. The bill exempts condos and single-family homes owned by individuals from the rent cap - unless it is a duplex where the owner lives in one of the units. AB 1482 will only apply to a single-family unit if the property is owned by a corporation.

3. The bill will not apply to property constructed and put on the market within the last 15 years. You can check your county assessor’s office to find out when your building was constructed.

4. The law would not override existing local rent control laws.

5. Before evicting tenants, under AB 1482, landlords would have to show “just cause” such as failure to pay rent, conviction of a crime on the property or other lease violations.

6. For tenants who have lived in a property for more than one year, landlords would have to give that lease holder a chance to “cure” their violation.

No Federal Charges in Fatal California Police Shooting SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) _ Federal authorities declined to pursue civil rights charges Thursday against Sacramento police officers who fatally shot an unarmed black man, a killing that sparked protests and spurred changes to a state law governing when authorities can use deadly force.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office and the FBI said a federal review of the 2018 shooting of 22-year-old Stephon Clark found “insufficient evidence” to pursue charges against Officers Terrance Mercadal and Jared Robinet. Both will be returned to active duty.

The California attorney general’s office in March declined to issue state criminal charges after a nearly yearlong investigation. Attorney General Xavier Becerra said then evidence showed the officers had reason to believe their lives were in danger because he was advancing toward them holding what they thought was a gun. Investigators found only a cellphone.

Sacramento police also announced Thursday their internal investigation did not find any policy or training violations.

“Although no policy violations occurred in this incident or in the events leading up to it, we are committed to implementing strategies that may prevent similar tragedies in the future,” Sacramento Police Chief Daniel Hahn said in a statement.

Clark’s brother, Stevante Clark, posted on Facebook Thursday that he was in a meeting with federal and local

authorities. “These people have failed when it comes to (accountability),” he wrote.

Authorities have said the officers believed Clark was approaching them with a gun after he ran from them into his grandparents’ backyard. The officers had been pursuing Clark after receiving calls about someone breaking car windows and an elderly neighbor’s sliding glass door.

The officers shot Clark seven times as he approached them.

The federal investigation looked at evidence such as witness statements, audio and video recordings, dispatch records, police reports, and autopsy reports to determine whether the officers acted willfully with the intent to use objectively unreasonable force.

Lawmakers last month updated the nation’s oldest law governing police use of deadly force, making it now among the country’s most comprehensive when combined with additional training.

California’s old standard made it rare for police officers to be charged following a shooting and rarer still for them to be convicted. It was based on the doctrine of “reasonable fear,” meaning if prosecutors or jurors believed officers had a reason to fear for their safety, they could use lethal force.

The new law, which takes effect Jan. 1, will allow police to use deadly force only when “necessary” to defend against an imminent threat of death or serious injury to officers or bystanders.

“Black people or people of color aren’t just dealing with one of them, but are dealing with all of them simultaneously,” added Ken Miller, an environmental scientist and lecturer in law for Washington U.

Now that the report has been released, the hope is for it to guide conversations that generate blueprints for change or possible solutions.

“The intent is not to have it be another report or set of data points that sit on a shelf somewhere,” said Reed. “It’s connecting these conversations together with the hope that we actually move forward with action.”

Initial steps are set to take place next month, when information from the report will be shared at events such as the Green the Church Summit, an “environmental and sustainability summit for the Black Church.”

The report’s authors acknowledge it won’t be easy to address such long-standing, complex and systemic issues.

But some see the interconnectedness of varying problems outlined in the report as a source of opportunity _ not just complication.

“We’re able to bring those all together for combined and greater impact . . I think that’s going to be a strength,” said Colon-Smith. “When we start making improvements in one area, they will have benefits to other areas.”

And while minority communities are disproportionately affected, the challenges aren’t confined to one part of the city, despite the legacy of segregated housing patterns.

“The truth is, it impacts a lot of people north and south of Delmar (Boulevard),” Reed said. “The sad part is, when it becomes a north-and-south conversation, it doesn’t get a lot of traction.”

By Bryce Gray St. Louis Post-Dispatch ST. LOUIS (AP) – African American residents in St. Louis are exposed to far greater environmental risks than whites, contributing to stark disparities in health, wealth and quality of life, a new report from Washington University has found.

Released earlier this month, the report titled “Environmental Racism in St. Louis” piles together data and personal stories to illustrate how city residents contend with eight separate issues, stretching from lead exposure to asthma and limited access to healthy food.

Many of these challenges – and how their impacts skew along racial lines – are well documented, and have been examined individually by experts, policymakers or advocates. But the 28-page report discusses how many of them are interrelated and compound one another _ something it says leaders need to take into account, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

“The report does a good job, in my opinion, of showing how these things come together, and how policy and divestment over time creates these outcomes,” said Kayla Reed, director of Action St. Louis, an activist group focused on racial justice. “Our goal is to get it in front of policymakers and community members to help spark dialogue around next steps.”

Those conversations figure to revolve around the hard truths described by the authors.

“It should come as no surprise that black St. Louisans are disproportionately harmed by lead poisoning, asthma, mold, and high energy costs _ all of which are associated with factors such as substandard housing conditions and air pollution _ due to living near industrial facilities, highways and building demolitions,” the report states. “In addition, the City’s focus on enhancing majority-white areas has left majority-black areas without adequate access to

public transit or healthy food, and with high concentrations of vacant properties and illegal trash dumping.”

The report was generated by the Interdisciplinary Environmental Clinic at Washington U.’s law school _ a pro bono legal practice that tracks matters tied to the environment and public health. It was done on behalf of four nonprofit organizations active in the city, with the stated goal to help those groups educate the community about environmental injustices facing minority and low-income residents, and to advocate for systemic changes to address them “and enhance public health.”

The findings show how unequal things are currently.

For instance, black children in St. Louis are about 10 times more likely to visit an emergency room for asthma than white kids, and 2.4 times more likely to have lead found in their blood. At the same time, mold complaints are most prevalent in the city’s majority-black areas, while black and low-income households face energy burdens that see them spend a much greater percentage of their income on utilities than typical city residents _ often more than double the median amount. And black residents are nearly twice as likely as white ones not to have access to healthy food, thanks to an absence of nearby supermarkets _ a phenomenon some have coined as “‘food apartheid’ to reflect the role of systemic racism in engineering this result,” according to the report.

Highlighting the linkages between many of the issues is one way the new report distinguishes itself from previous papers or studies, said various people behind it.

“All of these things are not separate outcomes,” said Reed, who added that continued policies and strategies “have created these disparities that live along class lines and racial lines.”

Clippers Open Up Camp for Their 2019-20 Season Continued from page A1

As I mentioned previously, these new centerpieces that have been added to the Clippers are MVP caliber players. What makes them unique is that they are premier defenders as well. Teaming Leonard and George with guys with a defensive nemesis like Patrick Beverley should make this team one of the toughest teams to score on in the NBA. I asked Coach Rivers what metrics would he be using to grade their defensive effectiveness, he facetiously said, “When the other team is not scoring.”

Coach Rivers elaborated on that comment by saying, “I think we can, not only be a good defensive team we can be disruptive. Last year we were solid defensively, in the second half of the year, but we could never be disruptive.

Pat could irritate guys but we couldn’t be disruptive. We couldn’t get our hands (on many balls) because we were small. I’ve been a big deflection coach! At some point, we couldn’t get enough deflections. Well today, especially when they were all on the floor, and you kept seeing the arm length of these guys. We had to change things up

because we couldn’t get enough work.”

Talking to this new Clippers team, they appear to be coming tight group quite nicely and they genuinely seem excited for each other, although Coach Rivers made it a point to say, “No game has been played. No minutes have been established.” So, once they start playing real games, we will have a much better idea of the chemistry and camaraderie this team has. I, like everyone else, will be expecting big things from this Clippers squad and am excited about following their progress throughout this season. The National African American Museum Dream

Brown NNPA Newswire Correspondent Dr. Lonnie Bunch III, the 14th Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, sat down for an exclusive interview with National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) President and CEO Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr., at the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

The two discussed Bunch’s timely new book, “A Fool’s Errand: Creating the National Museum of African American History and Culture in the Age of Bush, Obama, and Trump.”

“I [initially] saw this journey to build a museum that could help bridge the chasms that divide us as a ‘fool’s’ errand,’” Dr. Bunch said.

The book outlines the multitude of challenges Bunch faced when pursuing the construction of the historical museum.

Those challenges included choosing the location; architect; design team; and the collection of unique pieces of African American artifacts.

He added that the museum was “an errand worthy of the burdens.”

During the intimate video-taped interview inside the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the two visionaries also tackled topics that ranged from the Transatlantic Slave Trade, their shared North Carolina families’ histories, the writing legacy of author James Baldwin, and the contemporary vitality of the Black Press of America.

“The relevance and inclusion of the Black Press in events such as this one, show the continued significance of the Black Press,” NNPA Chair Karen Carter Richards, said after the interview between Chavis and Bunch.

“The Black Press is alive and well, and we will continue to be the daily recorders of our history across the globe.

Although we’ve seen many changes within our industry; these changes are bringing better opportunities for the Black Press,” Richards said.

“So, we are honored that Dr. Lonnie Bunch has chosen to include us as a part of this important national media event,” she said.

While in graduate school, Bunch desired to write a dissertation about the Black Press, he said.

However, naysayers told him the Black Press was unimportant.

He said that theory quickly was proven wrong.

“I knew it was,” Bunch said.

“I think the Black Press has always been the guardian of our community. It’s always been the place where facts are found that are not told in other places. It’s a place where you can understand the richness of the community.

“What I love about the Black Press today is that it’s a place that reminds people of the power of the African American community… the Black Press is critically important.

“What [The Black Press] does is it reminds us that there are many different lenses to understand a story. If you don’t have the lens to the African American community, where are you going to find your story? For me, the Black Press is crucial not for the past, but for the future,” Bunch said.

The Smithsonian national leader also marveled over the enduring legacy of Baldwin, whose works explored racial, sexual, and class distinctions in North America.

“As a 17-year-old freshman at Howard, the first book I picked up was ‘Go Tell It on the Mountain,’” Bunch said.

“I was so moved by [Baldwin’s] writings. I read everything that he wrote because, in some ways, what Baldwin did is that he captured the trueness of the community in an unvarnished way. He also inspired us to demand fairness,” he said.

Bunch said he sought out to obtain a building that would reference the spirituality, resilience, and hope that have been key elements within the African American community.

Elements he said that have shaped America’s identity in ways most Americans do not understand.

He said the revolution in South Africa reinforced his belief that history is an effective tool to change a country by embracing the truth of a painful past.

The museum opened three years ago to much fanfare, with former presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush, among others, in attendance.

“To some, visiting the museum allows them to find hope … that the current poisonous political partisanship and racial antipathy will one day be overcome,” Bunch said.

A historian, author, educator, and curator, Bunch has enjoyed a career of near unapparelled success.

Bunch has held numerous teaching positions, including American University in Washington, D.C. (Bunch’s Alma Mater); the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth; and the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Bunch was elected in 2017 to become a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

He’s also the recipient of the President’s Award from the NAACP, and the Impact Leader Award from the Greater Washington Urban League.

Last year, the Phi Beta Kappa Society presented Bunch with the Phi Betta Kappa Award for Distinguished Service to the Humanities and the National Education Association

honored him with the Award for Distinguished Service to Education.

Earlier this year, Bunch was appointed Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, the first African American to hold that position in the organization’s 173-year history.

He oversees 19 museums, 21 libraries, the National Zoo, numerous research centers, and several education units and centers.

Now, with “A Fool’s Errand,” Bunch said he has a sim-

ple message to convey.

“History matters,” he told Chavis.

“You can’t understand yourself or the future without looking back. History is an amazing tool to live your life.

The Spence vs Porter Unification Fight Card Is the Reason Boxing Fans Love Boxing

From start to finish this fight in downtown Los Angeles was action packed not only for the 16,702 fans in attendance but the millions of fans watching around the world. Though fight fans tuned in to see Errol Spence Jr and Shawn Porter unify their belts, there were great fights on the undercard for them to enjoy as well.

The PBC on FS1 telecast began with Linden, Mi., rising star Joey Spencer, in his fourth fight of this year, dispensing of Revere, MA., Travis Gambardella rather quickly. This fight was scheduled for 4 rounds though Gambardella was knocked down 4 times in the first couple rounds before the fight was stopped in the third round. The 19-year-old Spencer will try to fight once more time before the year concludes.

In his own words, Spencer says post-fight, “The body shots weren’t really the plan going in. I started off with headshots and he was taking those well. I put one downstairs and I instantly saw it affected him badly. I knew it was a wrap. I was going to keep going to the body. I thought the referee was going to stop it in the second round. When he let him go, I took a deep breath and made sure not to punch myself out. I stuck to my jab and let the rest take care of itself.” “I’m so happy with the improvements that I was able to show tonight on the big stage. I’m really excited for what’s to come.”

The following bout was much more competitive as Gilroy, CA. (36-6-1) Robert Guerrero took on Covina, CA., (14-1-1) Jerry Thomas as all judges had Guerrero winning this fight convincingly. “I got some rounds in tonight, which was valuable. We got what we needed and boxed our way to victory.”

Guerrero went on to say, “I want to get back into those bigger fights. I moved around and stayed smart in there tonight. The goal was to stick to the game plan and I did until the end of the fight, but then I got right back on it.

You just have to keep working out the kinks and that’s what I’m going to keep doing.”

In the final undercard of the evening, 36-8 (19 K0’s) Josesito Lopez took on the 20-8 (24 KO’s) John Molina Jr. in a 10 round Welterweight bout. This match-up of two sluggers promised to be a slugfest with the toughest guy to remain standing. After an early knockdown of Molina Jr., it was obvious that Lopez would have the advantage in this bout. Though this fight lasted 8 rounds, Lopez was never in trouble during this fight.

I knew he wasn’t going to quit. He’s a warrior. I had to keep on the pressure. I was thinking that hopefully the ref and the team made the right call to finish it at the right time.”

Josesito Lopez continued in to say, “There’s a lot more ‘Riverside Rocky. Robert Garcia has turned my career around. I’m a race car and like NASCAR, I’ve got a whole team behind me. We both carry power in our hands so it wasn’t a surprise someone went down. It easily could have happened to me with the power he has. I was able to catch him early, find openings and get the finish. I’m a top 10-level fighter. I’m going to give any fighter and any world champion a run for their money. I want memorable fights and I want the best. It was an honor to fight Keith Thurman’s last fight and I’d love to fight him again. I want all big challenges and all the titles.”

In the opening fight of the FOX Pay-Per-View, young San Antonio native Mario Barrios took on Russian bred Batry Akhmedoz. Each of their lead boxing fans to expect a war in the ring. That’s just what the fans got! The WBA Super-Lightweight Championship was on the line and neither of these men wanted to go home without that belt.

From the first round to the last, these men left everything in the ring. Though I was rooting for Mario Barrios I, like

most fans in the building, had no idea who won this fight and was anxiously awaiting to hear how the judges scored this fight.

This fight could’ve been called, either way, it was just that a close a fight. The crowd erupted once the judges announced that Mario Barrios was the new WBA Super Lightweight Champion. Evidence of how close this fight was seen in the judges’ scorecards, as they scored this fight 111-116, 111-115, 112-114.

In the post-fight press conference, Batyr explained his thoughts on the fight, “The judges see better than I can from the ring. I did everything I could. I thought I won the fight. They decided that he won the fight. When I watch the fight, I’ll be able to tell you what it looked like. My job is to do everything to win. The judges are supposed to judge correctly. I knew that I had to win by a wide margin.

The plan was to gradually grow the activity, but after the first knockdown, I knew that I had to add more than I had planned. So, I started being more aggressive. I did everything I could to try to stop him.”

Akhmedov followed up by stating, “The knockdowns didn’t hurt me but I didn’t see the punches coming. I took a little bit of time and I felt okay. I tried to do everything I could. I was told that I wouldn’t be able to handle his experience, but he was on the ropes most of the fight. I beat him up and I thought I won the fight.”

In elated fashion, Mario Barrios said, “I promised my city of San Antonio that I would bring this title back home and I did it. I knew this was going to be a war. He was getting dirty in there but the Mexican warrior in me was not going to let this opportunity pass me by. I dug deep and got the victory.”

The Co-Main Event pitted then WBC Super Middleweight Champion Anthony Dirrell against former WBC Super Middleweight Champion David Benavidez.

Having never lost his belt in the ring Benavidez was eager to regain his Championship belt back, though to do so he would have to go through Anthony Dirrell who earned the

belt by beating Avni Yildirim in February of 2019 for the vacant title that Benavidez was stripped of.

This fight for the WBC Super Middleweight Championship was sure to be a hard-fought and highly contested fight. Benavidez was planning on getting a knockout against Dirrell who was very focused on defending his belt. From round 1 of this championship bout, Benavidez walked down Dirrell with very little respect for his punching power. As the rounds progressed and Dirrell could not hold off Benavidez’s attack, Benavidez continued to apply pressure to the champ even taunting him telling him to hit which would then allow him to counter punch him inflicting more punishment.

Midway through the fight, Benavidez caused an ugly gash just below the eyebrow of the Champion Dirrell. The gash caused some visible discomfort for Dirrell as he began to paw at the gash, even though the Referee asked for the Ring Doctor to look at the gash after the 6th, 7th, and 8th rounds, they allowed the fight to continue. The fight was stopped in the 9th round as Dirrell had trouble locating Benavidez’s punches coming and was not able to retaliate effectively.

Dirrell told us after the fight, “He hit me with a clean shot. That’s my first time ever being cut by a punch.

It opened up. There was nothing I could do about it. I couldn’t see the whole fight after that. My corner did a good job on it, but I really couldn’t see. I would have kept going in there. I’m not quitting against anybody. Everyone saw I didn’t go down. My legs were still strong, but I couldn’t do anything about it. We’re going back to the drawing board.

I’m still fighting. We won’t end on a loss. You can put anybody in there with me.”

Benavidez’s emotions poured out during his post-fight press conference by stating, “There are so many emotions coming at me at once. We put so much hard work into this training camp. We left home and were away from everything. But I had the dream to become the youngest two-time super middleweight world champion and I

made my dreams come true. Everything just fell in place perfectly. From the suspension to all the big fights I’ve been in. All of that helped me out in this fight. I did not make a mistake or open myself up more than I needed to. I worked behind my jab and got the stoppage. Things are going to get better and get tougher and I’m ready for the challenge.”

He continued to say, “This was one of the hardest fights I’ve had. It was very tactical. But I worked my jab the whole time. It wasn’t easy. I’m now the youngest two-time world champion, from Phoenix, Arizona. I’ve got a lot of respect for Anthony Dirrell, especially the way he fought tonight.”

Though over 16,700 boxing fans poured into Staples Center to witness the Welterweight Championship Unification fight between IBF Champion Errol Spence and WBC Champion Shawn Porter, they were treated to a great night boxing even before these 2 men stepped into the ring. As you may have expected to the lead up to this title fight has gotten contentious at times and Saturday night was the time for each of their emotions to erupt.

To my surprise, Shawn Porter showed his championship metal by coming out and dominating five of the first six rounds. Porter was able to get inside and stay in Errol’s chest, not allowing Errol to create distance with his jab. All the while landing some punishing body shots on Spence Jr. and taking control of the fight early. Porter landed the most on Spence (172) than any fight of his career to date.

Although the fight was nearly even in punches thrown 744 to 745 in favor of Spence Jr.. Errol did land 44% of his power punches. Spence Jr. also landed 29.7% of his body punches to Porter’s 23.1%. Finding his range in the middle rounds of this fight was key for Spence Jr. as he was able to gain control of the fight by landing the most percentage of his power punches to seemingly wear down Porter.

Errol’s knockdown of Shawn in the 11th round was the difference of the fight on most scorecards, tilting the fight in his favor. However, Porter fought harder in the 12 to attempt to earn that point back, though to no avail.

Shawn did land more jabs to the body but Errol landed nearly 20% more power punches 44.2% to 25.7%, this disparity led to the judges scoring the fight in his favor.

Shawn Porter was gracious in defeat by saying, “I’ve said this before, I’ve had a lot of experience in the boxing ring. Did you enjoy that fight? He’s a strong kid. We both came in to do the job. I think I had a little more than what he expected, but he handled it. Congratulations to him and his team. We’re proud of what we did. I think that knockdown was the difference. I couldn’t come back to the corner with my head down after that.”

Boxing fans from Texas came out to support Errol Spence Jr. and were loud and proud once it was announced he was the new WBC and still the IBF Champion in the Welterweight division. Post-fight Spence was elated and stated, “It feels good to win. This is a lifetime dream. It shows hard work pays off. Thanks, Shawn Porter, my whole team and all my Texas people for coming out. Shawn Porter is a rough and awkward fighter. I didn’t get off what I wanted to. He’s a true champion. He made it tough. All my punches have bad intentions. Boxing Mikey Garcia, I wanted to show people I could do it with that style. Porter was throwing a lot. I wanted to show I was the bigger and stronger welterweight.”

This was the fight of the year to this point in 2019 and thankfully it lived up to the hype. This fight was a shining example of boxing fans loves boxing. If you possibly missed this fight for whatever reason, you need to catch the replay of this fight because it is well worth your time investment.

Rams Rally Falls Short

By Earl Heath Contributing Sports Writer The L. A. Rams fell in a hole big time vs. the Tampa Bay Bucs trailing 21-0 in the first half. Rams QB Jarred Goff threw for a career high 517 yards but they came along with 3 interceptions in a 55-40 setback to the Bucs (2-2).

Robert Woods was on the receiving end 13 times for 164 yards. Cooper Kupp added 9 receptions for 121 yards.

Todd Gurley rushed for 2 scores and on one he looked like “TG” with a bruising run up the middle.

Bucs QB Jameis Winston completed 28 of 41 passes for 385 yards most going to Chris Goodwin who had a career high 12 catches for 172 yards and 2 TD’s. Those 12

USC has Tough Time VS Washington

receptions were the most by a Bucs receiver since Keyshawn Johnson (2001). Former Trojan Ronald Jones II ran for 100 yards and had runs 55 and 25 yards called back due to holding penalties.

At the 2:35 in the 4th Bucs receiver Mike Evans caught a 67 yarder from Winston to give the Bucs a 45-27 lead. Kupp caught a 29 yard touchdown pass, then Marcus Peters returned an interception 32 yards for a score with 8:11 to play.

The lead was cut to eight when Winston drove the Bucs 72 yard for a Matt Guy Short field goal.

By Earl Heath Contributing Sports Writer USC had high hopes heading to Seattle to take on The Washington Huskies. The results were not what the visitors wanted coming up on the short end of a 28-14 score.

Starter QB J.T. Daniels was out for the year in game one, Freshman Kedon Slovis has a head injury. USC put their offensive hopes in the hands of Matt Fink.

The Trojans trailed the Huskies (4-1) by two scores at the end of the first period 14-0.

In the 2nd they got on the board with a three yard run by Fink that cut the lead to 14-7. On the day Fink completed 19 of 32 passes for 163 yards and 3 interceptions.

Michael 4 Pittman Jr. had 4 catches for 64 yards including a 44 yard scoring pass from Fink. Amon-R St Brown had 5 receptions for 32 yards as the Trojans (3-2, 2-1) rolled up 375 yards in offense. The picks were the problem and lead to two Husky touchdowns.

The Trojans has a solid day on the ground rushing for 212 yards with a combination of Markese Stepp, Steven Carr, and Vavae Malapeai (49 yards) sharing time. Carr lead the way with 94 yards including a 60 yard run.

The USC defense held Huskies QB Jacob Eason to 180 yards passing and no touchdowns.

John Houston and Polaie Gateote had 10 tackles each to lead the defense.

The Trojans have a bye before traveling to Notre Dame October 12.

Tyler Perrys Studio Rivals Hollywoods Best ’

By JONATHAN LANDRUM Jr. AP News LOS ANGELES (AP) — Tyler Perry remembered shedding tears when he saw an Atlanta highway exit bearing the name of his television and film studio for the first time.

The actor-director-writer believes he might have the same emotions during the grand opening of his massive state-of-the-art Tyler Perry Studios on Saturday night. He’s planning a star-studded unveiling of his 330-acre studio, where some big projects have already been filmed including his “Madea” films along with AMC’s “Walking Dead” and Marvel’s blockbuster hit “Black Panther.”

“When I came here in 1992, I came with a dream,” Perry said in a recent interview. “I’m looking at everything I’ve dreamed and more to come to pass. It just reminds me.

I just thought this was the Promised Land and that sign reminded me of that every time I pass it. The studio is a reminder as well.”

Perry said his sprawling studio rivals other major Hollywood studios including Warner Bros. and Paramount Pictures. It’s considered one of the largest production studios in the country with 12 soundstages, 40 buildings on-site that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and more than 200 acres of green space.

The filmmaker built the studio on a former Army base called Fort McPherson, which is south of downtown Atlanta, after purchasing the land in 2015.

“I gave them the absolute best,” he said. “I built the absolute best I could. We perform and run this place like a top. We have excellent service and everything you would expect to have in a major film television studio. People are glad to shoot here. A lot of them want to return because of the way we handled it.”

Perry went from being homeless to become a force as a filmmaker to now being honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which he will receive Tuesday.

He recently partnered with Viacom to launch the BET Plus streaming service, which debuted last month. He’ll also have two new drama series, “The Oval” and “Sistas,” premiere on BET this month.

But with all his accomplishments, Perry said Hollywood still has a hard time understanding the value of his content, which has gotten what he calls “undying” support from African Americans. He said the industry also struggles to realize the “power of the black dollar” and the amount of work he’s put into each project.

“Nobody in Hollywood believes that I’m sitting around and writing seven series by myself,” he said. “I have no writer’s room because nobody else is writing anything.

I’m writing everything. There’s nobody else directing any of the shows. I’m on (the) set directing every show. That’s so rare for the town. They can’t even wrap their brains around it. On these TV shows, they shoot three, four or five pages a day. I’m shooting 90 pages a day. It’s very difficult for them to even wrap their brains around that to understand.

So I feel like they don’t get it. If they did understand, they would realize that there’s a lot to Hollywood that could change or should change.”

One place Perry believes he can continue to make a difference is through his studio. He’s known for creating opportunities for African Americans and other people of color to work on his sets since opening a 200,000-squarefoot studio in 2006. He sold that studio a few years ago after he moved to his current location.

Perry believes his films and owning a studio could have a lasting impact on his legacy. But he wants the studio to become a beacon to inspire other filmmakers with the hope of keeping it in the family.

“I think they will go hand in hand,” Perry said of his filmmaking career and studio ventures. “But I think this brick-and-mortar of the studio speaks volumes because it’s not about my dream. It’s about all the other people that are able to come in and build dreams and share dreams and tell their stories as well. I hope it lives on forever and ever. And if my son wants to take it over, that would be even better.”

Versatile Forest Whitaker; from Crime Boss to Music Man

By LYNN ELBER AP Television Writer LOS ANGELES (AP) – Forest Whitaker plays a real-life crime boss in Epix’s new drama series “Godfather of Harlem” with the commanding intensity expected from him. What’s less expected is the movie musical he filmed in London this summer, a U-turn for the actor who started out a singer.

“Jingle Jangle,” a Netflix movie set for a holiday 2020 release, and “Godfather of Harlem” highlight Whitaker’s range and why he switched to acting _ this despite the vocal talent that earned him a scholarship to the University of Southern California’s music school and attracted his first agent.

“I didn’t think I would be able to affect the people from my own communities. I didn’t think they would even watch” the likes of light opera, he said. “So I made the decision that acting would be the way, and I walked away from music.”

After earning a degree from USC’s drama school, Whitaker gained notice for early films including “Platoon” and “Good Morning, Vietnam” and was honored at the Cannes Film Festival for his portrayal of jazz great Charlie Parker in 1988’s “Bird.” His searing performance as Ugandan dictator Idi Amin in 2006’s “The Last King of Scotland” put him in the company of the handful of African Americans to receive the best actor Oscar.

It was youthful idealism that helped him reject work that didn’t match his aspirations. For Whitaker, acting didn’t equal stardom or a steady gig; it was a quest, as he put it, to find “the pilot light of each person” and understand human connections.

“I was offered a soap opera, I said, nah. That has nothing to do with what I’m trying to do. And it ultimately worked, where I ended up getting to play some very unique characters throughout this 30-something years,” Whitaker, 58, told The Associated Press. “And I’m still getting the opportunity. This character of Bumpy Johnson is a unique and iconic figure to get to play.”

The 10-episode “Godfather of Harlem,” debuting 10 p.m. EDT Sunday, is part of a string of TV movie and series projects he’s done over the years, including a guest turn

in Fox’s hip-hop drama “Empire” that let Whitaker briefly put his vocal skills on display (as he did in the 2013 film “Black Nativity”).

Whitaker plays Johnson in the early 1960s, returning home from prison to find Italian American gangsters muscling in on his New York City turf and young activist Malcolm X on the rise. Whitaker, also an executive producer for the series, said he’d had only a glancing knowledge of Johnson from films including 1997’s “Hoodlum,” which starred Laurence Fishburne.

“I really didn’t know the depth of his personality or the depth of his influence on the community. I didn’t realize or understand the relationship between him and Malcolm X. I didn’t know about his family life,” Johnson’s links to the civil rights movement or what drove him, Whitaker said in a panel discussion. “That was interesting to me as something to develop and something to be able to be a part of as an actor. It was amazing.”

Whitaker’s on-set demeanor was critical to the production, according to executive producer Chris Brancato.

“Everyone captures his energy, which is so sweet and gentle,” he said at a recent Epix red-carpet event in New York.

Vincent D’Onofrio plays Johnson’s chief rival in crime, with Ilfenesh Hadera as Johnson’s wife; Nigel Thatch as Malcolm X, and Giancarlo Esposito as Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Paul Sorvino and Chazz Palminteri also are in the cast. The score is composed by by Mark Isham, with tunes from the ‘60s or earlier are featured, along with contemporary songs produced by Swizz Beatz with artists including John Legend and DMX. The story and its people were carefully researched through books and interviews with those who lived in Harlem during Johnson’s time, Brancato said. Ellsworth Raymond Johnson, nicknamed Bumpy as a child, was born in 1905 in South Carolina and died of heart failure in 1968.

“Wherever we could we sought to put their actual attitudes and specific words in their mouths,” Brancato said in the panel discussion. “Dramatic license was taken to create scenes, but the entire goal was to endeavor to keep the

It’s a big leap from a crime drama to the family friendly “Jingle Jangle,” in which Whitaker plays an eccentric inventor and grandfather. It was also a rewarding one as he rediscovered his singing voice and something more: His character’s journey and the upbeat attitude of director Da-

vid E. Talbert showed inspiration can be found outside “the more down and sadder” places familiar to Whitaker.

Talbert is “so joyous about it. It’s teaching me so much I need to know, and this character’s teaching me something.

I don’t always live in that kind of joy,” the actor told the AP.

Drum Festival held in Memory of Nipsey Hussle

By Ricky Richardson Los Angeles- Few would argue that the year in moving to fast. We are already at the end of September.

One thing for certain is the annual Watts Towers Day of the Drum Festival, held the last weekend of September.

I joined several hundred visitors from throughout the Greater Los Angeles area as well a contingent of international tourist at the Watts Towers Arts Center Campus, on a gray overcast day. The cool weather finally caught up with the season.

The Watts Towers Day of the Drum was held on Saturday, September 28, 2019. The festival is presented annually by the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs and Friends of the Watts Towers Arts Center. The Day of the Drum Festival celebrated cultures through a wonderful showcase of music, dance and inter-active performances.

The large, multi-cultural crowd and I came together for this popular, unique festival that celebrates the role of drums and drummers in world cultures past and present. The drums are the heartbeat of the community and were on full display throughout the day long event.

James Janisse and Kamau Daaood paired up once again to serve as Master of Ceremonies for day one of Watts Towers Arts Center festivals.

The Day of the Drum Festival as well as the Simon Rodia Watts Towers Jazz Festival entitled The Marathon Continues-In Memory of Nipsey Hussle, one of our dedicated students. Collectors picked up the copies of the program and poster that featured the outstanding artwork

by Aiseborn {Ace-born}.

Each year, the Watts Towers Day of the Drum Festival featured and engaging and educational component of the program. A spokes person from each group explains a brief history of the dance, music and culture that added

immensely to our enjoyment of their show.

The day got under with Xochipilli Aztec back by popular demand, showcasing traditional dancing and drumming with on the Huehuetl and Teponaxthle drums.

The crowd and I buckled our seatbelts in preparation for our day long cultural journey. The Korean Classical Music and Dance Company founded in 1978, under the direction of Dr. Don Suk Kim. Hundreds of years of Korean history was on full display during their time in the spotlight.

Mestre Amen Santo and Capoeira Batuque was next to take to the stage. This energetic group of musicians, capoeira’s and dancers left the crowd and I in awe with their jaw-dropping movements.

Dr. El’Zabar solo performance found him dazzling the crowd with his silky-smooth vocal stylings, scatting, and air-playing of the bass, trumpet and saxophone on one tune, and alternating on playing the kalimba, drum kit and Cajon.

Mandingue Empire is a fully charged, high octane group performing the best of West African drumming.

The group is led by two-time Grammy-award winning percussionist Magatte Fall. Magatte Fall was awarded his Grammy for his score to Black Panther movie as well as the percussionist for Angelique Kidjo.

Marvin “Smitty” Smith and Black Diaspora Music concluded the Day of the Drum Festival by vibrantly painting a musical expression of the Black Experience. Their set brought back fond memories for those in attendance.

All Day Activities consisted of a Drum Circle Pavilion- Universal Drum Circle led by Matt Gibson III, Garden Studio-Tiling and Gardening activities, Interactive events for Children’s, Tours of the Galleries, and delicious food options in the Food Court.

The conference featured breakout sessions where each speaker shared personal testimonies about experiencing, but overcoming a variety of challenges to get to where they are in the county today.

Home to more than 10 million residents, the County of L.A. serves as the regional safety net for many children, adults, families, and communities. Collaborating with various county departments, LACAAEA is at the forefront of supporting these efforts. The organization believes in the development of vibrant, strong, and resilient communities.

Sharing the African-American cultural heritage and learning about other cultures is important in order to

create space to create dialogue needed to address complex social societal issues, such as racial bias, lack of economic opportunity, and social injustice that tend to divide, rather than unite cultures.

LACAAEA serves and supports the professional development needs of African-American employees in the county. The organization seeks to discourage bias through the thoughtful elevation of African-American culture.

LACAAEA believes that professional development is key to advancement within the county ranks and helps to enhance the skills needed to better serve residents who rely on the county’s services.

LACAAEA also understands the power of education to change the trajectory of an individual’s life. The

organization offers annual scholarships to foster youth pursuing higher education and to children of one or more current LACAAEA members. Midway through the organization’s 2019 General Membership Educational Conference, the organization introduced its 2019 Member Grant and Scholarship and Foster Youth Scholarship Awardees.

“The future of LACAAEA is to develop more charity and community outreach programs, offer more scholarships, and add more training sessions and workshops to prepare members to advance in their county careers,” said LACAAEA President Pauline Oghenekohwo.

“I would have never had an opportunity to meet such incredible and talented county employees, had it not been for LACAAEA.”
