Inglewood Noise Mitigation WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Maxine Waters (CA-43), Chair of the House Financial Services Committee, announced today that the United States Department of

assistance to an estimated 150 Inglewood residents who are impacted by the noise from planes flying into and out of the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). “I am proud to announce that the FAA has awarded a grant for more than $4 million to the City of Inglewood for residential noise mitigation,” said Congresswoman Waters. “This grant will help an estimated 150 Inglewood residents mitigate the impact of airport noise in their homes. While Inglewood has previously received noise mitigation funds, not all residents have benefited, and many residents have been waiting for years for soundproofing for their homes.” The FAA grant will provide additional funding for the City of Inglewood’s Residential Sound Insulation Program. Inglewood residents who wish to find out if they qualify for residential sound insulation can contact Ms. Bettye Griffith, the program’s director, who can be reached by phone at (310) 412-5289. “I have worked for many years to bring relief to all of the individuals and families near LAX who have been living with airport noise every day,” said Congresswoman Waters. “Noise from LAX operations is extremely disruptive for the people who live and work near the airport. This grant will bring relief to these residents who deserve to enjoy peace and quiet in their homes.”

SEATTLE (AP) – A lawsuit by a black employee against a federal law enforcement agency claims her career was impacted after she filed a complaint against a white supervisor with a Nazi-themed tattoo. The Seattle Times reported Sunday that the lawsuit says the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives withdrew Cheryl Bishop’s appointment to its Washington, D.C., headquarters after she filed a complaint about Bradford Devlin, a senior supervisor in the bureau’s Seattle division. Devlin says his Nazi tattoo is a ``war trophy’’ from his undercover work with a white-supremacist motorcycle gang in Ohio in the early 2000s. The tattoo and a series of emails sent from Devlin’s ATF account mocking black people and then-President Barack Obama are key elements in Bishop’s lawsuit filed in 2018. A trial is scheduled to begin Oct. 28.

Emmett Till Inquiry

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) – The federal government is still investigating the brutal slaying of black teenager Emmett Till, whose death in 1955 helped spur the civil rights movement. A Justice Department report issued to Congress about civil rights cold case investigations lists Till’s killing as being among the unit’s active cases. The inquiry was reopened two years after a book indicated a key witness had lied. Till was killed hours after he whistled at a white woman. An all-white jury in Mississippi acquitted two white men of murder charges. Relatives of Till say they’re encouraged that the case remains open but they’re anxious for a resolution. The department has closed its review of six other slayings dating from 1940 through 1973 without filing any charges.

The activist, educator, and former Black Panther earned the honors because of her dedicated work during the civil rights movement and Davis’ continued fight to secure equal rights and social justice for women. “At each significant turning point in my life, when I was introduced to the world of progressive political activism, anti-racist prison abolition struggles, when I myself was on the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted List and ended up spending two years in jail and on trial, when I became involved in many international solidarity efforts, intersectional feminist movements, I’ve always been one of

SUGAR LAND, Texas (AP) – A Houston-area school district will spend $284,000 for the reburial of remains believed to be 95 African American prisoners hired out during the notorious Texas convict-leasing period. Trustees of the Fort Bend Independent School District on Monday night awarded the reinterment contract to the Missouri City Funeral Directors. The remains were found last year at a school construction site in Sugar Land. District officials later decided not to build on the property that’s believed to be a burial site for inmates contracted out, but not paid, in the decades after the Civil War. Fort Bend County and school officials in July reached an agreement to establish a permanent resting place for the convict laborers as part of a possible memorial and education center.
