Dr. Martin Luther King Jr talked about the idea of low-income people receiving regular checks from the government in the 1960s. Also, in 2017, there was gathering momentum for a movement calling for California to leave the Union and create its own country. That movement, labeled Calexit, was headed by Louis Marinelli, an American citizen who lived in Russia. According to Bloomberg, the campaign received financial backing from the Russian government. Marinelli later returned to America, renounced Calexit, and ran for a State Assembly seat. He received 6.4% of the vote.Creating a new state is a complicated process. For example, secession from California would require approval from state legislatures, Congress and a signature from the president of the United States.

It asks, “Do the people of San Bernardino County want San Bernardino County elected representatives to study and advocate for all options to obtain the county’s fair share of State funding up to and including secession from the State of California?”

Miracle Messages, an outreach program for the unhoused in San Francisco, started to pilot test a program called Miracle Money last year. Miracle Money provided $500 to homeless people. And the initial program seemed to be a success. According to Miracle Messages, about 50% of the people in the test group were able to find housing after they received the cash payments. Miracle Money was funded by a GoFundMe campaign.

Biden reportedly signed off on the deal to include Bout, despite his reputation as the “Merchant of Death.” He’s currently serving a 25-year US prison sentence.

BALTIMORE (AP) – A Baltimore judge on Monday ordered the release of Adnan Syed after overturning Syed’s conviction for the 1999 murder of Hae Min Lee – a case that was chronicled in the hit podcast “Serial.”

“Then at 16, I started my band in 1981 and the rest is history. At the time, we were one of two teenage zydeco

During the late 1970s, many members of the Opelousas community and surrounding areas feared that the music they cherished would die. This group become known as The Treasures of Opelousas and they formed the first zydeco festival in 1982. Now known as The Original Southwest Zydeco Festival, this September marked 40 years that it has celebrated Creole culture and zydeco music.Simien still writes and performs music more than four decades after founding his first band. He and his wife, Cynthia, have also spent years educating others about the importance of zydeco. In 2007, the Recording Academy approved the couple’s motion to add Best Zydeco or Cajun Music Album to the Grammy awards.

“Regionally, majorities in the Inland Empire, Orange/San Diego, and the San Francisco Bay Area would vote ‘no,’ while likely voters in the Central Valley and Los Angeles are divided,” they wrote. “At least half across most demographic groups would vote ‘no.’ Likely voters age 18 to 44 (52%) and renters (51%) are the only two demographic groups with a slim majority voting ‘yes.’”

The song went on to win a Grammy in 1986 for Best Ethnic or Traditional Folk Recording. Chenier and Queen Ida also won Grammy awards during this golden age of zydeco. As the big names were enjoying their moment in the spotlight a new generation of musicians was emerging.

She also said the state must decide whether to seek a new trial date or dismiss the case within 30 days.Syed, who has always maintained his innocence, received widespread attention in 2014 when the debut season of “Serial” focused on Lee’s killing and raised doubts about some of the evidence prosecutors had used, inspiring countless dinner table debates about Syed’s innocence or guilt.Last week, prosecutors filed a motion saying that a lengthy investigation conducted with the defense had uncovered new evidence that could undermine the 2000 conviction of Syed, Lee’s ex-boyfriend.

He and Cynthia also started Creole for Kidz to help pass down the knowledge and history of Creole culture to future generations. Since its founding in 2000 Creole for Kidz has spread its message to over 500,000 students and educators around the world. The program focuses on zydeco and Creole history along with the music providing an immersive and educational experience.

The term zydeco has several origin stories but the most widely accepted is that it came from the saying “Les haricots ne sont pos sales” which translates loosely to “the beans are not salty.” Chenier used this phrase as a title for one of his early hits. Chenier also designed the rubboard vest, known as the vest frottoir, one of the most used tools of zydeco.Throughout the 60s, 70s, and 80s zydeco music spread to neighboring states like Texas and Mississippi and even further out into California. It gained national attention after Rockin’ Sidney’s smash hit “(Don’t Mess with) My Toot Toot.” The song became a Top 40 hit and was the first zydeco to gain airplay on pop, country and rock stations.

Leland Schipper started a Go Fund Me for Pieper to help offset the cost of the $150,000 judgment and to help her restart her life.

He noted that she desires to attend college, create art, and advocate for other sex trafficking victims.

Schipper said Pieper, who had already spent nearly three years in juvenile detention awaiting trial, did not deserve to spend time in an adult prison.

“The court is cognizant that you and your supporters will be frustrated with the imposition of the $150,000 in restitution to Mr. Brooks’ estate,” Porter, a Black man, told Pieper. “This court is presented with no other option, other than which is dictated by the law of this state.”

The government had determined the predominate Black area as the best place for Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs), a toxin that increases the rates of various cancers.

Polk County District Judge David Porter sentenced Pieper to five years of supervised probation and ordered her to pay $150,000 restitution to the man’s family.

“The thought that the state would pick this county of all the 100 counties in North Carolina as a dumping site was unthinkable,” stated Chavis, whose start in civil rights began under the tutelage of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

“Today, my former student, Pieper Lewis, bravely took the microphone during her sentencing hearing and told the courtroom that her voice mattered,” Schipper wrote on the fundraising site. “I was incredibly proud of her. She was powerful, and she brought me to tears.”

Chavis and Burwell also joined a large group at Duke University’s Penn Pavilion Garden Room for a discussion titled “Recalling Warren County Protest.”

“Pieper does not deserve to be finically burdened for the rest of her life because the state of Iowa wrote a law that fails to give judges any discretion as to how it is applied,” he said.“This law doesn’t make sense in many cases, but in this case, it’s morally unjustifiable. A child who was raped, under no circumstances, should owe the rapist’s family money.”Schipper also noted that the judge ordered Pieper to perform several hundred hours of community service each year, do routine drug testing, and attend therapy.

Police quickly detained those protesting the state’s decision to allow the toxins in the area.

“This was to avoid a risky trial where her team feared an Iowa jury may implicitly struggle to see a young black girl as the victim of sex trafficking that she was.”

He said those early years of effort endure today as “an effective national and global movement for justice, for environmental justice.”
