Charlottesville Struggles with Race

By Cash Michaels NNPA Newswire Regional Correspondent CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—To say that Charlottesville, Va. held its collective breath on August 12th – the first anniversary of the deadly “Unite the Right” white supremacist violence a year ago that tragically took the life of Heather Heyer, a 32-year-old white anti-racist protestor, is an understatement.

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam, and Charlottesville city officials, declared a state of emergency, mobilizing every available police officer and state trooper in an unyielding show of force, to preempt the kind of street clashes that infamously marked the Ku Klux Klan and skinhead demonstrations in August 2017.

Stung by withering criticism that law enforcement did little to quell the violence that erupted last year, officials virtually shut down the core Charlottesville downtown area for the August 10– August 12 weekend to vehicular traffic, and screened pedestrians for weapons.

Indeed, the “over-policing” this year, many residents complained, actually raised tensions, especially since the “Unite the Right” rally organizers moved their demonstration to Washington, D.C. this year.

Anti-racism protesters—most of whom were students from the University of Virginia at Charlottesville (UVA), bristled when a phalanx of state troopers, local police, hovering helicopters, and at one point, National Guardsmen with rifles and armored vehicles, flooded the corner of Fourth and Water streets downtown; the same corner where Heather Heyer was fatally struck by the car allegedly driven by a neo-Nazi.

There were intense verbal confrontations, and four arrests, but ultimately, no violence.

“Yes, there are some inconveniences, but we’d rather err on the side of safety this year,” said Councilman Wes Bellamy, who helped to calm tensions between demonstrators and police.

While church and civic groups sponsored numerous events to promote racial and spiritual harmony during the tragic August 12 anniversary, some residents were resentful, saying that Ms. Heyer may have been the only protester killed last year, but there were many other victims of White supremacist violence then as well who are rarely spoken of.

“I think that there’s a universal acceptance that what happened here was disgraceful,” civil rights activist Rev. Al

Sharpton told reporters after preaching Sunday morning service at First Zion African Baptist Church. “But they do not want this to be representative of their city, and they want to move forward.”

And then there are the everyday challenges that many say are more important than removing Confederate statues.

Sacramento Police Reconsider Foot Chases After Clark’s Death

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – Police in California’s capital city are discouraging dangerous foot pursuits of suspected criminals after a chase led to the fatal shooting of an unarmed black man in March.

The policy announced Monday requires Sacramento officers to consider their own safety, danger to the public and the importance of making an arrest.

Officers must start their body-worn cameras and broadcast why they are beginning a chase and a suspect description. The policy adopted last month also requires officers to identify themselves as police and order the suspect to stop.

Critics say two officers failed to identify themselves before chasing and killing 22-year-old Stephon Clark. They suspected him of breaking into cars and a home and say they thought he had a gun.

But he was found holding only a cellphone.

NC School Gets Grant for African-American Heritage Center

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (AP) – A historically black university in North Carolina has received a $350,000 grant to turn a 1920s-era school for African-American children into a center to tell the stories of those students and others educated at similar schools.

Elizabeth City State University officials say in a news release that National Endowment for the Humanities gave the grant to pay for the renovation of the Rosenwald School building and the Principal’s House on the campus.

ECSU officials said last week that they must match the grant with donations to go toward the $1.5 million cost of turning the buildings into the Northeastern North Carolina African-American Research and Cultural Heritage Center.

Rosenwald Schools were named for Julius Rosenwald, a Sears and Roebuck executive who paid for schools for rural black children across the Southeast.

Bail Reform This Year? Audit Shows Ferguson Proposed Legislation Raises Fears of Improves a Little Bit Computer-Based Bail System

By Manny Otiko California Black Media Progressives and some black activists have long complained about America’s bail system, which treats people with means differently from low-income people. Under the current cash bail system, people charged with a crime can sit in jail for months, and sometimes years, without seeing a judge simply because they can’t afford bail.

A good example of this situation is seen in the story of Kalief Browder, a New York teen, who was arrested on charges of petty theft. Because his family couldn’t afford his $3,000 bail, he languished in Rikers Island for three years, before a judge dropped the charges. Two years after his release, Browder committed suicide. His family said his experience in jail, where he had to fight to survive and was placed in solitary confinement, killed him.

The other side of the American justice system is seen in the case of Cameron Terrell, a white teenager from Palos Verdes Estates, who was behind the wheel in a drive-by shooting. His parents put up $500,000 in cash to secure a $5 million bond.

Terrell was acquitted in July. Two black males, who were passengers in the car, are still facing life sentences.

However, a proposed bill suggests taking the setting of bail amounts out of human hands and making the criminal justice system fairer. According to a section of Senate Bill 10 “The California Money Bail Reform Act of 2017,” the new legislation would require the use of a “pretrial risk assessment tool.”

Critics of the bill interpret this to mean using a computer algorithm, that takes into consideration the suspects’ age, location, and criminal record, to set bail. This conjures up images of the automated system used in the Tom Cruise movie “Minority Report.”

More than 100 civil rights and civil liberties organizations have complained about the potential use of an algorithm-based system to evaluate bail.“Last week, the national ACLU signed onto a statement along with other civil rights, digital justice and community-based organizations, which included a call for

important policy reforms to accompany any use of pretrial risk assessment tools.

“It’s far overdue for government jurisdictions to end the money bail systems that have kept poor people and people of color locked up while awaiting their day in court. Many jurisdictions, however, are turning to pretrial risk assessments, placing a technological barrier between people and their freedom. Algorithms cannot undo the racial bias that exists in the criminal legal system. These and other high tech tools will always disadvantage communities of color and threaten to replace mass incarceration with digital prisons. We join the chorus of civil and human rights organizations in calling on jurisdictions to reconsider their use of pretrial risk assessments and adopt solutions that actually set people free.” Said Myaisha Hayes, criminal justice & tech organizer for Center for Media Justice.

One of the fears about SB 10 is its reliance on technology.

Technology is far from perfect, as shown in Russia’s use of hacked emails to tamper with the 2016 elections. And according to the ACLU of Northern California, Amazon’s face recognition technology, which is currently used by some police departments, has shown signs of bias. White faces were found to generate less false matches than black faces.

According to Jaivon Grant, writing in the Sacramento Observer, this may encourage opposition to SB 10.

“The local and national civil rights groups have long sought to end the money bail system, and SB 10 is the closest they have come to doing so to date. However, Sen. Hertzberg and Assemblymember Bonta may have a very difficult time persuading enough of their fellow Democrat colleagues to support an algorithm-based bail program in the face of such compelling opposition by a powerful coalition of civil rights organizations opposing it,” he said.

Leaders of the assembly and senate were both reported saying this was a priority before the Aug 31 end of this year’s legislative session.

By JIM SALTER Associated Press ST. LOUIS (AP) – A new audit found that Ferguson, Missouri, has made significant progress in addressing problems in its municipal court, which drew scrutiny for its treatment of poor and minority people after the fatal police shooting of Michael Brown in 2014.

Democratic Missouri Auditor Nicole Galloway's report released Monday was a follow-up to an April 2017 audit that found the St. Louis suburb's court system in disarray. The 2017 audit found disorganized files, boxes moldy from a water leak, and cited the assessment of $26,000 in illegal fees and $1,400 in missing funds.

The new audit said court personnel have implemented new procedures aimed at preventing and detecting loss or theft, though the $1,400 is still missing.

“My last audit discovered careless and disorganized records management that led to serious questions as to the ability of the court to effectively serve citizens,” Galloway said in a news release. “While there is still work that needs to be done, efforts are underway to address the audit findings and implement better processes moving forward.”

The court has new procedures to ensure independent reviews of records, financial activity and modifications to transactions, the audit said. It also noted that the court now has a system to better document reviews of closed cases and dismissed tickets.

An email message seeking comment from Ferguson City Manager De’Carlon Seewood was not immediately returned.

Last year's audit cited $26,000 in illegal fees such as a $15 “letter fee” and a $50 “warrant recall fee.” The court also charged a $75 “non-prosecution fee” for those who made an initial report but eventually declined to seek charges.

Brown was 18, black and unarmed, when he was fatally shot by white officer Darren Wilson on Aug. 9, 2014, following a confrontation in a neighborhood street. Wilson was eventually cleared of wrongdoing and resigned in November 2014.

The shooting resulted in sometimes violent protests and heightened scrutiny in the St. Louis suburb. A review by the U.S. Department of Justice found biased treatment of blacks by Ferguson's police and accused the municipal court of making money on the backs of poor and minority residents. A settlement with the Justice Department requires reforms under supervision of a monitor team.

“The issue is this deep-seated racism that we have here,” Mayor Walker said. “And that’s the challenge. And that’s a lot of work.”

And it doesn’t help that many believe the White power structure in Charlottesville, the home of Thomas Jefferson, caters to University of Virginia—arguably the largest employer in the city next to the hospital system. UVA is also an institution that was built on the backs of slaves.

Leaders like Councilman Bellamy, insist that progress is being made when it comes to planning for affordable housing, economic development, and even the hiring of more Black police officers (few were seen on patrol during the state of emergency).

But until that progress is seen, and felt, residents say the hard feelings surrounding race, and lack of forward mobility for the average working person in Charlottesville, will remain tragic anniversary after anniversary.

Child Honored for Saving Toddler from Pool CARRBORO, N.C. (AP) – A 10-year-old boy has been honored by North Carolina authorities for saving a 15-monthold girl from an apartment pool.

The News & Observer reports Joseph Ray “saw the baby sinking to the bottom of the pool” after she tipped out of a float. He says he jumped in and carried her out. The Carrboro Police Department awarded Ray with its Lifesaver Award on Wednesday. The girl was taken to a hospital for observation.

“They’re building all of the new homes and apartments for folks making six-figures,” said “Lloyd,” an independent cab driver who had to change professions in order to make ends meet.

For the first time in its history, Charlottesville has two African-Americans on its city council—Mayor Nikuyah Walker and Councilman Bellamy—both of whom were elected on the promise of improving the quality of life.

But talk with residents, like cab drivers who find themselves having to work seven-days a-week just to keep up with a spiraling cost of living in housing costs alone, and you get a sense of abandonment against the backdrop of the “haves” getting what they want, because they have those “six-figure salaries.”

By JILL COLVIN Associated Press BRIDGEWATER, N.J. (AP) – Former presidential adviser Omarosa Manigault Newman said Sunday she secretly recorded conversations she had in the White House, including her firing by chief of staff John Kelly in the high-security Situation Room.

It was a highly unusual admission, which immediately drew fire from allies of the president and national security experts.

Parts of her conversation with Kelly were played on the air when she appeared on NBC’s “Meet the Press” to promote her new book, “Unhinged,” which will be released next week. The Associated Press independently listened to the recording of the conversation between Manigault Newman and Kelly, in which Kelly is heard referring to potential “difficulty” in Manigault Newman’s future “relative to your reputation.” She said she interpreted his comments as a threat.

In her book, Manigault Newman paints a damning picture of President Donald Trump, including claiming without evidence that tapes exist of him using the N-word as he filmed his “The Apprentice” reality series, on which she co-starred.

Manigault Newman said in the book that she had not personally heard the recording. But she told Chuck Todd on Sunday that, after the book had closed, she was able to hear a recording of Trump during a trip to Los Angeles.

“I heard his voice as clear as you and I are sitting here,” she said on the show.

But the other recording she discussed Sunday could prove equally explosive.

“Who in their right mind thinks it’s appropriate to secretly record the White House chief of staff in the Situation Room?” tweeted Ronna McDaniel, chair of the Republican National Committee.

In the recording, which Manigault Newman quotes extensively in the book, Kelly can be heard saying she can look at her time at the White House as a year of “service to the nation” and referring to potential “difficulty in the future relative to your reputation.”

Manigault Newman said she viewed the comment as a “threat” and defended her decision to covertly record it and other White House conversations, describing it as a form of protection.

“If I didn’t have these recordings, no one in America would believe me,” she said.

The Situation Room is a Sensitive Compartmented

Information Facility, or SCIF, where the nation’s most consequential foreign policy decisions are made, and staff are not permitted to bring in cell phones or other recording devices.

“I’ve never heard of a more serious breach of protocol,” said Ned Price, who served as spokesman of the National Security Council in the Obama administration. “Not only is it not typical, something like this is unprecedented.”

Price said there is no one checking staffers for devices at the door, but there is a sign outside the room making clear that electronic devices are prohibited.

“The Situation Room is the inner-most sanctum of a secure campus,” he said, describing the breach as part of a culture of disregarding security protocols in the Trump White House. He also questioning why Kelly would ever choose to have such a meeting there.

The White House did not immediately respond to questions about the tape, but has tried to discredit the book. White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders called it “riddled with lies and false accusations” and Trump on Saturday labeled Manigault Newman a “lowlife.”

White House counselor Kellyanne Conway also questioned Manigault Newman’s credibility in an interview Sunday on ABC’s “This Week.”

“The first time I ever heard Omarosa suggest those awful things about this president are in this book,” she said, noting Manigault Newman “is somebody who gave a glowing appraisal of Donald Trump the businessman, the star of the ‘The Apprentice,’ the candidate and, indeed, the president of the United States.”

But Manigault Newman now says she was “used” by Trump for years, calling him a “con” who “has been masquerading as someone who is actually open to engaging with diverse communities” and is “truly a racist.”

“I was complicit with this White House deceiving this nation,” she said. “I had a blind spot where it came to Donald Trump.”

Should Banks Be Raising the Citizenship Question?

By Mark Hedin Ethnic Media Services Candidate Donald Trump rode his anti-immigrant rhetoric straight to the White House. Since then, he’s banned people from heavily Muslim-populated countries, taken children from their parents upon arrival at the Mexico border, is attempting to make citizenship status a question on the 2020 Census, and one hot day in late July, blocked a fourth-generation American mom from buying her kids tacos at her local swimming pool in Roeland Park, Kan. Jessica Salazar Collins, a Bank of America customer for nearly 20 years, called BofA to ask why her debit card had been declined.

Eventually, she learned that her account had been frozen, because her husband had not responded to a bank postcard inquiring about his citizenship status. Josh Collins was born in Wichita.

Neither of the Collinses has ever left the United States except for a first-anniversary, belated honeymoon trip to Mexico in 2005. They had been Bank of America customers before that.

In time - not as quickly as promised, and not in time to buy movie tickets for the family the next day - the couple regained access to their earnings. But by early August, they’d taken their banking to a local credit union. “This happened to the wrong people,” Jessica Collins told Ethnic Media Services.

BofA isn’t alone in asking customers their citizenship status.

Checking account applications from Chase, Citi, Wells Fargo, US Bank and even the credit union where the Collinses now do their banking, Mainstreet, all ask about it, and so do San Francisco’s Fire and Golden1 credit unions.

BofA declined to say why it targeted Josh Collins but not his wife, how often it performs such “routine updates” of client accounts, or how many postcards it sent out like the one the Collinses ultimately threw away in fear it was actually a scam, or how many more people experienced the bank’s “last resort,” as spokesman Christopher Feeney described it, of having their accounts frozen for failing to respond.

Banks and American Bankers Association spokeswoman Blair Bernstein generally explain the citizenship question as a part of their effort to combat money-laundering and terrorism funding, but in every case, the decision to ask customers about their citizenship status is the bank’s own choice. Federal rules do not require it.

“We have many customers who aren’t U.S. citizens,” Feeney told Ethnic Media Services. He also said the citizenship question is nothing new for them and probably has been in place at least a decade. The Collinses, he said, just got caught up in one of the bank’s periodic updates of client information.

Treasury Department regulations require that banks know

customers’ names, date of birth, Social Security numbers and addresses.

“Banks may be tightening up their due diligence,” said lawyer Alma Angotti, who specializes in money laundering and terror funding enforcement for the consulting firm Navigant in Washington, D.C. She previously worked at the Securities and Exchange Commission and Treasury Department.

“The current political climate has cast doubt on why financial institutions are doing this. There are lots of things banks will ask you that aren’t required,” she said.

Bank of America spokesman Feeney described the government’s various sanctions against other countries as the root of an array of regulations that led the bank to ask about citizenship. Knowledge of a customer’s dual citizenship, for instance, Angotti said, might keep a bank from questioning why a customer is sending money out of the country.

The more information a bank has up front, the fewer

questions it will have as it routinely monitors customers’ accounts and transactions.

But for those without citizenship status, immigrant advocates say, any requirement that they divulge their circumstances is going to deter them from doing business with that bank.

“It’s something we’ve been hearing about for a while,” said Paulina Gonzalez of the California Reinvestment Coalition said.

“It seems to correlate with … the anti-immigrant stance of the administration.

“That’s what’s so concerning. People are afraid to sign papers,” she said, referring to a 2017 survey done by some of the 300 members of the nonprofit California Reinvestment Coalition. Her 32-year-old organization aims to ensure financial institutions reinvest in their communities and “do no harm,” she said. Some members in the course of their work will try to gather rudimentary information from the people they provide financial counseling and small business support.

are never done right.” Is the message that Hall of Fame Running Back Eric Dickerson shared from his father with the players.

This was a fantastic collaboration between the Chargers and the Rams. One that the players and coaches will not soon forget. Not only have these teams displayed terrific teamwork, this investment in their community by supporting the local high schools, will undoubtedly create lasting fans, for years to come.

We to Need Close the Achievement Gap Between White, Black and Brown Students

By Nate Davis CEO and Board of Directors Chairman, K12 Inc. Our nation’s graduation rate is at an all-time high. The national figure shows 84 percent of young people, overall, graduating from high school within four years after first entering the 9th grade, a trend that has been on a consistent upswing since the 2010-2011 school year.

Still, despite much progress with that indicator, major gaps still exist. And there is great concern that the graduation rate hype not only masks those gaps, but distracts us from what must be our ultimate goal: ensuring all students earn a high school diploma and are college and career ready.

Even as overall graduation rates improve, Black and Hispanic students continue to lag behind that curve. Graduation rates for African American students are 76.4 percentage points—8 percentage points behind the national average—and Latino students are at 79.3 percent. Native American students fare even worse at just 72 percent graduation. Meanwhile, White and Asian students are anywhere from four to six points higher than the national average.

None of us can reasonably expect the closure of inequality gaps, if we’re simply satisfied with overall graduation rates while resigned to stubborn achievement gaps. Yet, it seems as if we’re in a phase whereby these disparities are being treated as normal— “the way it is”—as opposed to addressing a larger parity problem.

We have to ask ourselves: are we having a responsible and responsive conversation about high school graduation?

The most recent “Building a Grad Nation” report from America’s Promise Alliance says that, “Twenty-three states have Black-White graduation rate gaps larger than the national average, including five states—Wisconsin, Nevada, Minnesota, New York, and Ohio—where the gap is more than 20 percentage points…

Twenty-four states have Hispanic/White graduation rate gaps that exceed the national average, and in two states – Minnesota and New York—the gap is more than 20 percentage points.”

The persistent normalcy of lower achievement among certain disadvantaged student populations is deeply troubling.

Closing those gaps should be as important—if not more—than simply raising overall graduation rates.

At the same time, graduation rates can be used to unfairly malign schools that are serving underprivileged youth and, in fact, helping at-risk students earn a high school diploma. Alternative schools are singled out for having four-year cohort graduation rates that are generally lower than the national average, but left out of the conversation is how these schools are intentionally designed to serve credit-deficient transfer students and former dropouts at risk of never earning a diploma at all.

Measuring how well schools are graduating students is important, but it should be done right, and must not create disincentives for schools to serve credit-deficient students or dropouts looking for a second chance. After all, what is more important for these students: graduating or graduating “on-time”?

It’s why graduation rate calculations should be reformed altogether so schools are held accountable for students’ annual progress toward graduation every year, not just in the fourth year of high school.

recent cases of manipulation and fraud, which, of course, is wrong, but it also misses the primary purposes of high school altogether: preparing students for higher education, careers, and the workforce. The linkage between these goals—graduation and college and career readiness—is crucial for broader national competitiveness. Graduating students is meaningless if they are not prepared.

The number of high school students heading into remedial courses in their first year of college are staggering, and the gaps between varying demographics are even more troubling. Nearly 60 percent of African American students are forced to enroll in non-credit remedial classes in college, according to the Center for American Progress, compared to 45 percent of Latino students and 35 percent of White students. This means that Black, firstyear college students, already burdened the most by rising college costs and loan debt, are taking on a greater share of the $1.3 billion wasted on non-credit remedial courses.

There is no one silver bullet that will solve our nation’s

graduation problem, but we can start by realigning graduation standards to the expectations of colleges, career training programs, industries and jobs, and developing competencybased, personalized learning paths for students unconstrained by four-year cohorts. And we must finally address funding gaps that exist for too many alternative schools working to eliminate achievement gaps between advantaged and disadvantaged students.

Addressing this complex challenge requires a mix of other solutions, too; improved learning models and instruction, greater support for our teachers, innovative technology, and increased services to disenfranchised students groups are just a few that we should be working on. But none of this can happen without educators, policymakers and business leaders willing to engage in honest and constructive conversations, and then pledging to act.

A rising graduation rate is worth celebrating, but let’s not become complacent.

Although it also notes that 16.5% of city residents continue to rely on payday-loan and check-cashing companies rather than traditional banks, some of its success in getting people bank accounts may be due to its program BankOn San Francisco, which refers citizens to banks that have met its “very specific standards,” program director Sean Kline told Ethnic Media Services. Among those standards is the requirement that they accept non-U.S. identification.

Among its banking partners is the Self-Help Credit Union, formed in 2008. That institution requires knowing a person’s citizenship status for loan applications, but not for checking accounts. Its website includes links to information on such topics as “You Don’t Need to Be a Citizen to Have a US Bank Account” and “How undocumented immigrants can get bank accounts” as well as testimonials to the reasons why people should - to establish credit history, safety in not carrying cash, earn interest and the bill-paying convenience.

It also lists Latino credit unions across the country (https:// tinyurl.com/Latinocreditunions). Gonzalez is quoted on the laws protecting customers’ personal information from governmental prying.

Banking, Gonzalez said, “is such a necessity of everyday life.

Here we are, creating a situation where they’re not going to have access to this important function, or they’re going to freeze your account or make you feel like you’re not welcome there.”

There’s “a lack of trust in financial institutions,” she said. “To have to answer such a private question in this political climate ... there are privacy rules in place. I know the bank can’t turn that information over without a subpoena, but that doesn’t mean that people aren’t afraid that’s going to happen.”

“We need this citizenship information to determine the eligibility and suitability of our products and to comply with the USA PATRIOT Act,” reads Wells Fargo’s online checking account application, in an explainer popup accompanying the online form’s citizenship question. Feeney, also, had cited the 2001 Patriot Act and the 1970 Bank Secrecy Act and Treasury Department regulations, but ultimately could not cite specific requirements that banks collect clients’ citizenship.

Neither could Blair Bernstein, spokeswoman for the American Bankers Association, who cited the 1970 legislation, “Know Your Customer” standards, and “strict regulatory requirements steadily expanded since 9/11,” along with regulators’ routine examinations of banks for compliance.

Part of a Bigger Crusade

By LINDSEY BAHR AP Film Writer BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) _ Constance Wu had resigned herself to the fact that “Crazy Rich Asians” was not going to work out for her. She was under contract for her sitcom “Fresh Off the Boat”, both were filming in the fall, and that was that. “Crazy Rich Asians” would be the first studio-made AsianAmerican movie in 25 years, and Wu, who has established herself as a crusader for Asian-American representation in Hollywood, would have to sit this historic moment out.

But then, feeling “kind of dramatic,” and thinking about the significance of the project to her and untold number of AsianAmericans who make it a point to tell her their stories because of her tweets and “Fresh Off the Boat,” Wu decided to give it one last shot and composed an email to director “Crazy Rich Asians” director Jon M. Chu. “I said, I know the dates don't work out and whoever you cast, I will be the first in line and I will be their No. 1 fan and supporter, but I did want to let you know that I would put 110 percent of my heart into this project and I know what to do with it and how to carry a movie and if you can just wait for me, I don't think you'll regret it,” Wu, 36, said. “I did NOT think this email would work. I did it more for me so that I felt that I had told my truth. But then he read it and said, “You guys, we've got to push the production.”

LONDON (AP) – British actor Idris Elba is stoking speculation he may take over the role of James Bond when Daniel Craig steps aside, offering an enigmatic Twitter post that fueled the buzz about him becoming the first black Bond.

The star of shows such as “The Wire” and “Luther” on Sunday posted an artistic selfie under the words “my name's Elba, Idris Elba,” echoing the spy's famous catchphrase.

American film producer Antoine Fuqua stoked long-running speculation about Elba taking on the role last week, when he told Britain's Daily Star that Bond movie boss Barbara Broccoli had said “it is time” for a non-white actor to play agent 007.

But before fans go overboard, Elba posted another tweet a few hours later saying, “Don't believe the HYPE ....”

A native of Richmond, Virginia, and a classically-trained theater actress with a passion for musicals, Wu has been working toward a moment like this her whole life, and taking it very seriously. During the shoot, she wouldn't go out with her costars for karaoke nights or have a drink after a long day of work.

She wanted to be clear of mind and she'd already promised her director that she was going to give it her all.

She knew how unlikely it was that she'd ever get an opportunity as an Asian-American woman to lead a studio movie.

“Even a terrific actress like Sandra Oh was always No. 2 or No. 3 in the movie, she was never No. 1 unless it was an independent movie,” said Wu, who is not shy about saying that she only wants to go out for roles where she is the No. 1 star. It's a drive that has made some uncomfortable.

“People are like, `Who do you think you are? And it's like, I guess I think I'm a talented actor and I guess I'm not a person who is going to let you make me feel small anymore,” she said.

But Wu isn't interested in making people feel comfortable at the expense of her truth, which is why at least part of her time is spent amplifying underrepresented voices on twitter, even knowing that it's affected her employment opportunities.

Wu once heard from a friend that her liberal boyfriend said he didn't like Wu’s politics.

“I'm like, ‘Does he not like my politics or does he not like that I have politics?’ And she asked him and he was like, “Oh I guess it's that,” Wu said.

Fame, she said, is silly in that regard. She thinks it's “dumb” that she has a bigger voice than other people, like journalists or academics who are more studied in discourse on race and intersectionality. But, she also realized that while she has this platform, she can at least do some good with it.

Henry Golding, who plays Nick, is in awe of Wu's fortitude.

“She's such a role model for so many people. She has a backbone, which a lot of people don't. She's not afraid of saying what's on her mind and really driving home what she thinks should be done, or what's not happening in the industry that should be happening,” said Golding. “She's going to go down as a real fighter and someone who can act the socks off anything. She is Rachel Chu.” As for what's next, Wu said she thinks she's going to have a lot of choices in the coming years.

“I'm very privileged and lucky and I'm at a point where I can sort of get to decide where I want to go with my career,” Wu said.

But the Wednesday morning announcement was also met with immediate backlash online, raising questions about what the new category would mean for a film like “Black Panther,” a global blockbuster which has also been talked about as a favorite contender for the best picture Oscar.

John Bailey, the newly re-elected president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and film Academy CEO Dawn Hudson said in an email to members Wednesday morning that the Board of Governors met Tuesday night to approve the changes, which also included bumping the 2020 ceremony up to Feb. 9. The date for the 2019 show, Feb. 24, remains unchanged.

“We have heard from many of you about improvements needed to keep the Oscars and our Academy relevant in a changing world,” Hudson and Bailey wrote.

The new film category quickly drew negative attention, with “popular film” becoming a trending topic on Twitter by Wednesday afternoon.

The addition of the popular film category, a clear effort to attract a larger audience to the ABC broadcast by honoring bigger and more seen films, led many to wonder whether a film like “Black Panther” would be ineligible for best picture and relegated to the popular film award because of its size and success, or lead to inadvertent segmenting by film academy voters.

Bailey and Hudson said eligibility requirements will be determined at a later date, but it is worth nothing that other top film categories like best animated feature and best foreign language film don't prohibit a best picture nomination. “Toy Story 3” was nominated for both best picture and best animated feature. It also wasn't specified whether it would be added for the 91st Academy Awards this February.

The division is not without precedent either. The first Academy Awards ceremony in 1929 actually did give out two top awards, one for Outstanding Picture and one for Unique and Artistic Picture to recognize both art films and epics, but the Unique and Artistic category was dropped the next year.

Ratings for the 90th Academy Awards fell to an all-time low of 26.5 million viewers, down 19 percent from the previous year and the first time the glitzy awards ceremony had fewer than 30 million viewers since 2008. Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, the ceremony also clocked it at nearly four hours, making it the longest show in over a decade.

Runtime is a frequent criticism of the glitzy awards show, vexing hosts and producers as they try year after year to keep the ceremony to a palatable length and often using the orchestra to play winners off the stage.

In an effort to keep future ceremonies to three hours, Bailey and Hudson said certain awards will still be presented live, but others will be given out during commercial breaks. Specific categories will be determined at a later date, but the film academy said the off-air winning moments will be edited and aired in a later broadcast.

Oscar viewership is often tied to the box-office muscle of the big nominees. The 2018 best picture winner, “The Shape of Water,” had grossed $57.4 million in the United States by the time the awards aired and $63.9 million total. The biggest Academy Awards audience on record came in 1998, when the blockbuster “Titanic” was named best picture.

Gregory Ellwood, the editor-at-large of The Playlist, noted that in the past decade there have been a significant number of $100 million-plus earners nominated for best picture, like “Gravity,” “Dunkirk,” “Get Out,” “Toy Story 3,” “The Help” and the “The Revenant,” and some of which went on to win, like “Argo,” “The King's Speech” and “Slumdog Millionaire.”

Harris wrote on Twitter that while the academy might dismiss public reaction to the changes, the organization has broadened and diversified its membership in recent years and might find less support than they expect internally.

“It truly is something that in the year Black Panther, a movie made just about entirely by and with black people, grosses $700 million, the Academy's reaction is, `We need to invent something separate...but equal.'

18th Annual Harold & Carole Pump Foundation Gala

The settings are nearly perfect for festivals, weddings, and various ceremonies. Yet, a pair of twin brothers has established a premier event, with a purpose which we all get behind and support. The Beverly Hilton Hotel hosted the 18th Annual Harold & Carole Pump Foundation Gala. This event has assembled a star-studded list of attendees.

In memory of their father, twin brothers Dana and David Pump Harold, the Harold & Carole Pump Foundation, started this Chatsworth, California based nonprofit organization back in 2000. This year’s honorees were Rod Carew, Reggie Jackson, Bill Walton, and Marc Kerner, MD. More info about the Gala can be found by visiting the website at haroldpumpfoundation.com.

This purpose of this event is to benefit the Harold Pump Department of Radiation Oncology, the Carole Pump Women’s Center and the Thomas and Dorothy Leavey Cancer Center at Northridge Hospital Medical Center. The Pump Foundation has given more than $7 million towards the treatment and cure of cancer, since the event’s inception. Proceeds will specifically go toward the development of new technology, cancer screening and educational programs for the underserved along with establishing a family plan for cancer patients at Northridge Hospital.

Many esteemed athletes, both current and former, along with entertainers came out to support brothers Dana and David Harold Pump, turning this event into a spectacle. Hall of Famer players to Grammy Nominated singers was in attendance and willing to share their gratitude for the being invited to this charitable event. By Cameron Buford whatsgoodinsports.com This past weekend in conjunction with Lexus and Adidas, actor and comedian Cedric the Entertainer hosted his 6th Annual Cedric the Entertainer Golf Classic in Tarzana, CA. the charismatic Cedric was joined by many of his friends in the entertainment industry to raise funds for the Cedric Kyles Family Foundation. This foundation, in turn, benefits the American Diabetes Association and Boys & Girls Club of America.

Raising funds for various charities has the theme of the summer for many foundations. Not that there are done to please me, yet it warms my heart to know, and see, the charitable efforts of those more fortunate than others. It’s further evidence that these entertainers and athletes have not forgotten what is

important to in life, and that is giving back to those less fortunate when the opportunity presents itself.

Not only should Cedric The Entertainer be applauded for his raising funds and awareness for illnesses which impacts many black men in America. The turnout for this event was tremendous and I must say it was awesome to witness such accomplished men and women gathering to support such worthy causes. So, it is easy to see how each of us, in one way another, have been impacted, will be or know someone that has been impacted by cancer. For the 5th year now, Matt Barnes is hosting the Athletes vs Cancer All-Star weekend to be capped off by their Celebrity Flag Football Game.

The Athletes vs Cancer foundation is meant to inspire hope and provide support for those affected by cancer. Additionally, the intention of the foundation is to assist those with minimal resources for cancer screening access. Barnes also hopes to inform and encourage our youth to make lifestyle changes to fight and eradicate cancer.

“Having lost my mother to cancer seven years ago, my mission is to support cancer patients and their families during one of the hardest battles of their lives.” explains Barnes. “Through innovative research, we can enhance public awareness of the many ways to detect cancer in its early stages with the ultimate goal of cancer prevention.”

By participating in the event in previous years, legendary entertainer Snoop Dogg was familiar with the event. This year Snoop decided to partner with Matt Barnes, by hosting the Cannabis Summit at his private compound, to kick-off the weekend’s events. Multiple physicians, scientists, and botanists attended this Cannabis Summit and were available to discuss the medicinal benefits amidst the backdrop of product displays and entertainment.

Friday there was a Celebrity Bowling at Lucky Strike in downtown Los Angeles. On Saturday night they hosted a pool party at a mansion in Encino. Capping off they’re weekend of educating and fundraising was the Celebrity Football Game which was held at local Fairfax High School.

Whether they expected this or not, this Celebrity Football game became a great event for the community. Kids under the age of six were allowed in for free, they field included a Family Fun Zone which many of the celebrities and stars in attendance mingled with their fans in attendance.

The game itself ended it being fairly, competitive. Big plays were made by some unsuspecting players on the field. No stat sheet was handed out at the end of the game, but I can tell you that Terrell Owens caught a touchdown to tie the game up… there was a penalty on their subsequent 2-point conversion to win the game and the next play fell incomplete… so the game went to overtime. JaVale McGee intercepted a pass in the end zone to the give Team Snoop the ball back. They then capitalized on the turnover when Andrew Hawkins caught a touchdown pass in the corner of the end zone.

Sacramento, CA (BlackNews.com) -- Last week, the Contractors State License Board (CSLB) held its first Executive Board Meeting under its new leadership in Sacramento this morning. Last month, the board unanimously appointed its first African American Female to chair its 15-member board in California. Marlo N. Richardson is a business entrepreneur in Los Angeles and an Executive Producer in television and film.

She was appointed to CSLB in 2015 by Governor Jerry Brown.

Previously, she spent the last 15 years as an executive in Law, and in Law Enforcement in Los Angeles. Her resume includes executive level experience in the restaurant, retail, health care, and real estate industries.

Richardson comments, “I am excited about the opportunity to lead such a wonderful board and to help facilitate the great work that is done on a daily basis to protect consumers and ensure the safety and stability of construction in California. I am grateful to the board for their faith and trust in me.”

Ms. Richardson graduated from California State University, Dominguez Hills with a BS in Communications, and attended USC’s School of Public Policy in addition to law school. She brings a wealth of knowledge as a business owner and executive manager in both the public and private sectors.

CSLB licenses and regulates contractors in 44 classifications that constitute the construction industry. There are approximately 300,000 contractors in California. CSLB was established in 1929 and falls under California’s Department of Consumer Affairs, and maintains a budget of approximately 66 million dollars with over 400 employees throughout the state of California. board member appointments are made by the governor and state legislature.

Yes on 10 Campaign Responds to Revelations that California NAACP Leader Alice Huffman is Hired by Campaign Opposed to Prop 10 Funded by Billionaire Landlords $800,000 and $25,000 a month retainer for Huffman to oppose initiative run by African American leaders, and supported

Los Angeles, CA - A bombshell lead article splashed across the front page of the San Francisco Chronicle this morning revealed that president of the California NAACP, Alice Huffman, has once again taken money to side with big businesses harming Black communities in a major ballot measure fight, California’s Proposition 10. The long list of social justice organizations supporting Prop 10, which will allow communities to urgently address California’s housing-affordability and homeless crises by limiting rent increases, includes the other major Black legacy civil rights organizations. California NAACP is an outlier organization opposed to Prop 10, with Huffman’s consulting firm, AC Public Affairs, being paid $25,000 a month to direct a $800,000 African American voter outreach campaign.

In the San Francisco Chronicle article Huffman said she was approached by two campaigns opposing Prop 10. When explaining why she chose the one she did, she said, “I took the highest bidder on the ‘no’ side, to be honest. I don’t make any apologies.”

According to the article, Huffman, in the past, has taken money from tobacco giant Philip Morris and pharmaceutical companies, industries which have gouged and lied to consumers much like the Wall Street corporations funding No on 10 are doing to renters.

Christina Livingston, an African-American young professional, the State Director of Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment (ACCE), and one of the three authors of Yes on 10 said, “As a Black woman who was actually displaced from Oakland, it saddens me to see an organization I grew up respecting being so misused.” ACCE along with the Eviction Defense Network and the AIDS Healthcare Foundation

are the three proponents of the Proposition 10 initiative.

Livingston added, “While I am disappointed by the revelations regarding California NAACP, I’m encouraged to know that other legacy Black civil rights organizations like the Urban League, Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and National Action Network have further affirmed their commitment to this effort by endorsing Yes on 10.”

Huffman’s actions are particularly egregious in that the Prop 10 campaign, led by African Americans, will help Blacks who struggle to pay skyrocketing rents that corporate landlords and Wall Street speculators profit from. According to a report by the state Department of Housing and Community Development Black and Latinx households are more likely to be rent-burdened, spending 30 percent or more of their income on rent. In some areas, like South Los Angeles’ historic Black Crenshaw community, the large majority of tenants spend over 50% of their income in rent.

Damien Goodmon, a leader of the anti-displacement organization in South Los Angeles Crenshaw Subway Coalition, and the campaign director of Yes on 10 said: “In the Chronicle article, Alice Huffman claims that the California NAACP executive board met in May to vote to oppose Prop 10.

I’ve attended California NAACP events for years. As we have with other Black organization leaders, I and others on the campaign reached out to Ms. Huffman well before May to ask for time to discuss Prop 10 and its direct benefit to Black renters and communities. She never called to invite Yes on 10 to present at a May meeting or any other time, or ask for any information. I checked in with some other prominent Black supporters of Yes on 10 and she didn’t reach out to them either. One must legitimately question the process Ms. Huffman did or did not engage in.”

Rev. Kelvin Sauls, former Senior Pastor of the historic Holman United Methodist Church, a Los Angeles Housing Services Authority Commissioner and the Faith Community Organizer for Yes on 10 said, “We hope that the California NAACP will move swiftly to reverse their position, and return the dirty money from the corporate landlords who made their obscene profits from pushing predatory lending on Black seniors, foreclosing on Black homes, and raising the rents on struggling Black tenants. The integrity with advancement and credibility in the achievement in equality of the revered NAACP is on the line.”

At a recent press conference in South Los Angeles, Black civil rights organizations and housing justice organizations leaders gathered to discuss the importance of passing Proposition 10 for Black communities.

Attendees included retired California Assemblymember Mike Davis, retired Los Angeles Councilmember Robert Farrell, Los Angeles Urban League President Michael Lawson, Southern Christian Leadership Conference-Greater Southern California President Rev. William D. Smart Jr., National Action Network-Los Angeles’ Rev.
