By Cameron Buford whatsgoodinsports.com Gone are the days of calling your bookie, using the guy your cousin knows or rushing to Las Vegas to bet are sporting events, due to the recent ruling of the Supreme Court. As some states were slow to adopt the state lotteries, which are now in nearly every state. Sports betting is getting the attention of local law makers all across America, and the eruption of sports betting is likely to change the way many fans view sporting events across this country.

In 1992 the federal Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) was enacted. Until New Jersey Gov. Chris Christy signed legislation that would permit sports gambling in New Jersey, PASPA remained unchallenged. Even after the major sports leagues NBA, NFL, NHL and MLB sued to the stop the ruling, the Supreme Court ruled that PASPA was unconstitutional in May of 2018.

CNN’s Supreme Court analyst and professor of law at the University of Texas School of Law Steve Vladeck states that, “today’s decision clears the way for all states to make their own decisions about legalizing sports betting, and in one fell swoop

gets rid of Nevada’s monopoly on the subject and the 1992 federal statute that had protected it.”

Not only has New Jersey greased the wheels for even more states to enter the legalized sports betting fray, less than a month after the Supreme Court victory, Delaware and New Jersey have opened sportsbooks to take bet on various sporting events. This ruling relinquishes the monopoly Las Vegas has held as the only legalized sports betting place in the county. Though obviously due to their experience with casinos, many states might look to Nevada for the best practices in the regulation of sports betting.

Though there are many states that have laws where sports betting is and will remain prohibited. The legalization of sports betting in these states will not change, unless certain laws are repealed. There are about 5 states that are preparing legislation to be signed for the immediate implementation of sports betting.

Like 17 other states, California is moving in the direction of legalizing sports betting.

“All other gaming activities in California are subject to regulations that ensure the safety of consumers,” Assembly member Adam Gray said recently. “Sports wagering should be treated no differently.” Gray reiterated his desire to further a

Civil Rights Groups, Democrats Oppose Trump’s SCOTUS Pick

Brown NNPA Newswire Contributor If President Donald Trump’s last Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch is any indication, his latest pick in Brett Kavanaugh will do the civil rights community no favors, National Urban League President Marc Morial said following the announcement of the president’s high court nominee.

Morial wasn’t alone, as many others joined in to call on the Senate to reject Kavanaugh, 53, who currently serves as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

Some of Kavanaugh’s more controversial opinions are at the core of arguments for those who oppose his appointment.

While he hasn’t expressed outright opposition to the Supreme Court’s decision in Roe v. Wade, critics note that Kavanaugh may likely side with Trump, when he eventually votes on the issue of abortion.

In one opinion, Kavanaugh did write that the government has “permissible interests in favoring fetal life, protecting the best interests of a minor, and refraining from facilitating abortion.”

In other issues that appear more germane to minority groups and communities of color, Kavanaugh has issued controversial

rulings on religious liberty and the Second Amendment.

The U.S. Supreme Court is the final stop for justice in America. The Supreme Court’s rulings affect all citizens, because every state must follow its decisions.

“Judge Kavanaugh has a record of ruling against affordable healthcare and women’s reproductive rights. Particularly troubling is his record on cases involving racial and workforce discrimination,” Morial said. “Seating a Supreme Court nominee with an obvious disdain for fundamental liberties will change American life as we know it.”

Tom Steyer, who runs the California-based group, “Need to Impeach,” has urged all his constituents to contact their senators to stop the nomination.

“Brett Kavanaugh is here for a reason. He believes presidents should be exempt from criminal prosecution and investigation while in office,” Steyer said, noting Kavanaugh’s previous comments about the presidency and his opposition to prosecuting a sitting president.

Kavanaugh has suggested that Congress pass a law barring

sitting presidents from criminal prosecution and investigation, personal civil suits, and questioning from criminal attorneys.

He has claimed that presidents can disregard laws they consider unconstitutional, despite what courts say.

Kavanaugh, a Georgetown educated jurist, who also teaches at Harvard Law School, declared the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau unconstitutional; he also wrote that Washington D.C.’s ban on semi-automatic rifles was unconstitutional.

“He’s anti-choice—just last year, he argued in favor of prohibiting an undocumented pregnant immigrant in federal custody from getting an abortion. He considers the Affordable Care Act unconstitutional,” Steyer said.

Kavanaugh has also attempted to roll back President Obama’s greenhouse gas regulations.

Ben Betz, the Digital Advocacy Director for the left-leaning Northwest, D.C. group “People for the American Way,” said Kavanaugh is “not just your run-of-the-mill narrow-minded, elitist judge.”

While Justice Kennedy, whom Kavanaugh would replace, was the high court’s last “swing vote” on critical issues like women’s reproductive rights and LGBTQ equality, it’s impossible to overstate how much is at stake with this nomination, Betz said in an email.

“We know that if Kavanaugh is confirmed that it won’t be long until a woman’s right to choose and the Affordable Care Act are gone,” Betz said.

Lawmakers also voiced their concerns.

“Whether or not the Supreme Court enforces the spirit of the words, ‘Equal Justice Under Law,’ is determined by the individuals who sit on that court,” said Democratic California Sen. Kamala Harris. “Brett Kavanaugh represents a fundamental threat to that promise of equality. I will oppose his nomination.”

Democratic New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand also opposed the nomination.

“One things already clear from his record, [Kavanaugh] can’t be trusted to safeguard rights for women, workers or to end the flow of corporate money to campaigns,” Gillibrand said.

After the announcement, Kavanaugh said that his judicial philosophy is straightforward.

“A judge must be independent and must interpret the law, not make the law,” Kavanaugh said. “A judge must interpret statutes as written. And a judge must interpret the Constitution as written, informed by history and tradition and precedent.”

In a statement about the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh, the NAACP said that the next Supreme Court justice will play an outsized role in determining whether African Americans move forward in our journey toward achieving full equality, whether we simply tread water for the next three decades, or whether we slide backward toward our former status as second-class citizens.

“Brett Kavanaugh is a dangerous ideologue whose extreme views on civil rights would solidify a far-right majority on the Supreme Court. Coming after Neil Gorsuch’s appointment, a Kavanaugh confirmation would re-make the Court in President Trump’s own image,” the NAACP statement said. “This prospect is unacceptable to the American people, and the NAACP is ready to lead the fight of a generation.”

The NAACP statement continued: “We will fight this Trump nomination with everything we’ve got. Our state conferences, branches and units are fully engaged to tell their Senators that our civil rights hang in the balance and that Kavanaugh must be defeated.”

Court Appeal in Dismissal of Police Shooting TUPELO, Miss. (AP) _ An appeals court will hear arguments in September as a Mississippi family tries to revive a $35 million wrongful death lawsuit over a police shooting.

Antwun “Ronnie” Shumpert, who was black, was shot to death by a white officer in June 2016 in Tupelo.

In November 2017, U.S. District Judge Sharion Aycock dismissed the family’s lawsuit without a trial. She wrote the law was clear that the officer and the city could not be found liable for damages in Shumpert’s death.

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports the 5th U.S. Court of Appeals will decide whether Aycock ruled correctly.

Federal and state prosecutors ruled out criminal charges against officer Tyler Cook, despite claims by Shumpert’s relatives that the shooting was unjustified. Cook says he shot as Shumpert punched him.

Rapper Buys Every Seat in House PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - A Maine rapper surprised moviegoers with free tickets to a sci-fi satire movie in Portland.

Rory Ferreira, who goes by the stage name Milo, bought all 129 seats to the 4:20 p.m. showing of the movie “Sorry to Bother You” at the Nickelodeon on Saturday. The Portland Press Herald reports employees told patrons they could see a movie for free as they arrived at the theater.

Ferreira says he was inspired by the movie’s director, Boots Riley, to do something good for society. Ferreira, of Biddeford, also attended the movie himself, and tweeted an invite for anyone interested to “catch a flick wit me.”

The movie follows the story of a black telemarketer who takes on white speaking mannerisms to try to succeed at his job.

Bus Passed By ‘Because You are Black’ EDGARTOWN, Mass. (AP) - A Massachusetts bus driver has been fired for telling a would-be passenger that he wasn’t picked up because he’s black.

The Martha’s Vineyard Transit Authority says the exchange was caught on video Wednesday afternoon.

Transit officials say the bus was traveling from Edgartown to Oak Bluffs when the driver passed the person. The bus was at capacity, but officials say the driver had failed to switch the marquee indicating it was full.

The man took an Uber to Oak Bluffs where he caught up with the bus and questioned the driver about why he was passed by.

At first, the driver said the bus was full. But when pressed, the driver said, “it’s because you are black.”

The transit authority says it has “zero-tolerance” for that type of behavior.

Millennial Brings Innovation to Education With “LegendsDoLive” NNPA ESSA Educator Spotlight:

Jarren Small, a 28 year-old, Missouri City native and community activist, launched LegendsDoLive, in an effort to improve educational outcomes for disadvantaged youth.

By Lynette Monroe Program Assistant, NNPA ESSA Public Awareness Campaign Jarren Small, a 28 year-old, Missouri City native and community activist, stopped asking, “Why not?” and became the answer that he was looking for when he launched the non-profit organization LegendsDoLive.

In 2014, without any major partners, Small founded LegendsDoLive, an organization committed to funding and coordinating community-based programs for disadvantaged youth.

As a charismatic adolescent, Small was active in various extracurricular activities. He attended Hightower High School, played basketball and earned awards through the Media and Broadcasting Academy. In 2008, Jarren became an Eagle Scout.

He credits his accomplishments to the positive impact of his parents’ consistent engagement and strategic exposure to diverse environments.

Shrugging his shoulders, Small downplayed his impressive list of academic and extracurricular accolades.

“Yeah, I guess I was kind of a cool kid in certain aspects,” Small said.

Ironically, Small’s many accomplishments were nearly overshadowed by his difficulty with standardized testing.

“Everyone thought I had it all together, but I failed to pass the math portion of the state standardized test,” called the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS), Small said. “I passed the Math TAKS by one point—my fourth time. I felt like [God] was giving me one final chance to get it together.”

After high school, Small attended Prairie View A & M University in Prairie View, Texas, an hour’s drive to the northwest of Missouri City.

“I did very well at [Prairie View A & M University],” Small said. “It was one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life.”

And once again, Small was quite the standout student. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in mass communication with a minor in marketing. As an undergraduate, he led a movement to bring the first panther statue to campus in reverence of the university’s founding fathers. Small served as the student government association president from 2011 to 2012.

Small’s collegiate career was a stark contrast to the challenges he had faced just a few years earlier as a graduating senior.

When asked if his difficulty with testing was a defining moment, Small responded: “I feel like my entire life has led to this point, like everything I’ve been through and all the experiences

I’ve had have been preparation for what I am doing right now.”

Fortunately, for other future leaders like Jarren Small, the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), national education law signed by President Barack Obama, seeks to alleviate the burden of ineffective testing. ESSA gives states more flexibility to decide what type of assessments they issue. ESSA also allows states to develop “innovative” assessments or to use other nationally recognized tests like the SAT or ACT. Small said that children are the nucleus of communities and that the success of our schools is the key to community sustainability.

Smiling, Small explained that, “Kids are not the future; they are the right now.”

The development of positive resources to support children offers a tangible solution to many concerns facing inner-city communities, Small said.

Small emphasized that his methods and approach to education are resources that all students can benefit from.

Likewise, ESSA requires states to prioritize stakeholder engagement in an attempt to better meet the educational needs of local populations in lieu of the national one-size-fits all academic standards promoted by its predecessor, the No Child Left Behind Act, signed into law by President George W. Bush.

Currently, LegendsDoLive works primarily with high school students. This year, their widely anticipated annual “Senior Fest” included an all-star basketball game between Hightower High School and Ridge Point High School, followed by an empowerment forum and concert.

“This concert is happening during school. Something like this has never been done before,” Small explained, as he expounded on the innovation required to engage today’s youth.”

More than 600 students participated in the event. Small said getting students to participate in positive, educational events is not as difficult, as some people might think.

“It’s easy,” Small explained. “You just have to listen to them and then give them what they ask for.”

Small said that he’s applying this same attitude to his newest education focus: literacy. In May, LegendsDoLive launched a hip-hop curriculum called “Reading With a Rapper” to promote reading and writing proficiency. This program is a response to Small’s educational approach of listening to children first and then responding to their needs.

Let’s hope that Small’s enthusiasm about innovative approaches to education radiates throughout the nation as it has in the Houston-metropolitan area.

You might also find some answers there. The point I’m trying to make is that in the eyes of God, one’s weaknesses are welcomed opportunities for God to show up and show out.

NAACP Lifts Travel Advisory Against American Airlines

By JESSE J. HOLLAND Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) _ The NAACP is lifting its travel advisory against American Airlines, saying the company is making improvements that address worries about African-Americans being subject to discrimination or even unsafe conditions while flying.

NAACP President Derrick Johnson made the announcement at the NAACP's national convention in San Antonio, Texas. The NAACP issued the advisory in October, after several incidents including an NAACP official and another civil rights activist being kicked off American flights.

Johnson said the Baltimore-based NAACP is encouraged by American Airlines' “commitment to improve upon their internal processes and increase inclusion across their airline.”

“We're pleased with the outcome we've seen,” Johnson said.

American Airlines CEO and Chairman Doug Parker said the company used the attention brought by the NAACP to continue to improve its customer interactions. “We can always be better,” Parker said.

American hired an outside firm to review its diversity in hiring and promotion, and promised to train its 130,000 employees to recognize subtle or implicit bias. Online training began this month, and classroom training is scheduled to take place this fall.

American, the world's biggest airline, says it also created a special team to handle customer complaints alleging discrimination. It says customers who file a discrimination claim will be called to discuss the incident.

The travel advisory came after several well-publicized incidents with American Airlines.

One involved the head of the North Carolina NAACP, the Rev. William Barber, who sued American after being removed from a flight last year from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport to Raleigh-Durham International Airport. Barber said police were called and removed him from the plane after he asked a flight attendant to tell a white passenger behind him to quiet down.

Barber accused the other passenger of making a comment about having a problem with “those people.”

By James Washington The Dallas Weekly/NNPA Member I remember reviewing the letters of Paul in bible study. In doing so I was constantly reminded that one cannot look at Paul without really seeing Jesus’ amazing handiwork.

Now you need to know that I think Paul is an awesome person when it comes to the story of his life. I haven’t found a biography or autobiography of anyone in or outside of the ‘good book’ who comes close to my admiration for Paul; Jesus notwithstanding.

Because the two are so closely associated with one another, I can’t help but consider the impact of this tandem on human history.

Just in case someone wants to debate me on this by bringing up the lives of the 12 apostles, I have considered them as well as the prophets and I’m just one of those who is in awe of Paul. A very large part of the bible is devoted to Paul’s building of the early church at a time when who you worshipped was a life and death decision. Sound familiar? See World today…

Paul himself says in his letters to the church in Corinth, there was indeed a point to his suffering and persecution and the basis for most, if not all, of what he went through was a by product of his faith in Jesus Christ.

It’s another perspective of one of my favorite scriptures. “But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I (Paul) will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.

That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties.

For when I am weak, then I am strong.” 2 Corinthians 12:810.

This kind of thinking and belief led to the eventual proliferation of the church worldwide.

It also makes the point of how the lives of so few have impacted and influenced so many in the world then, and also in the world as we know it today. Forgive me if I find this a rather fascinating fact. Paul is who he is because of his unique one on one encounter with Christ.

That encounter changed him and ultimately the world in which we live. If that be true, then our individual encounters with Christ should also have a profound effect on us and the world in which we currently live.

It is not unusual for new Christians to come under attack by old friends. It is also not unusual for new Christians to come under the attack of the world, since it is in the world that Satan has some degree of power.

I think Paul’s good news is there is a place of refuge for all of us, when this happens. He uses himself as an example to follow.

If I surrender my weaknesses to the power of Christ and subjugate my will to that of the Lord’s, then I become empowered to deal with whatever is thrown my way.

Life, the Christian life, is funny that way. It places what I have described as a bulls- eye on your back, designed to distinguish you from those non believers around you.

By TIM REYNOLDS AP News The Kawhi Leonard saga in San Antonio is finally over. So is DeMar DeRozan’s time in Toronto.

An NBA summer blockbuster got pulled off Wednesday, with the Spurs sending Leonard to the Raptors — weeks after the disgruntled 2014 NBA Finals MVP asked for a trade — as part of a deal that also has DeRozan leaving Toronto for San Antonio.

The Spurs also got Jakob Poeltl and a 2019 protected first-round draft pick, while the Raptors acquired Danny Green.

For Leonard and the Spurs, there’s finally closure to a relationship that obviously was fractured beyond repair and devolved into a soap opera as the season went along. For DeRozan, who has often professed his love for Toronto, the initial reaction seemed to be one of anger and frustration.

“Ain’t no loyalty in this game,” DeRozan wrote in an Instagram story that appeared in the wee hours of Wednesday, around the time that ESPN and Yahoo Sports reported that the trade was approaching the imminent stage. “Sell you out quick for a little bit of nothing ... .”

DeRozan did not specifically reference the trade in that post.

But his message didn’t exactly need translation.

The trade is a huge, and potentially risky, move for both teams.

Leonard appeared in only nine games for the Spurs last season because of a somewhat mysterious right leg injury — and the level of severity was something that even some of his now-former teammates reportedly questioned last season while San Antonio was trying to qualify for the Western Conference playoffs. Leonard’s health status, even now, is publicly unknown.

Plus, he can be a free agent next summer. When he asked the Spurs for a trade weeks ago, it was made clear that he wants to play for the Los Angeles Lakers. That means the Raptors are

entering into this deal knowing that they could have given up a star like DeRozan for someone who might not be in Toronto for long.

DeRozan has led the Raptors in scoring in each of the last five seasons. He was key to Toronto winning 59 games and securing the No. 1 seed for the Eastern Conference playoffs last season. But after getting swept in the second round by Cleveland, the Raptors decided massive changes were necessary — first the firing of coach of the year Dwane Casey, and now the trading of a perennial All-Star who once famously declared “I am Toronto.”

Leonard’s injury last season was described as right quadriceps tendinopathy, and the Spurs listed him as out on their injury reports for much of the year, citing “injury management.” During the 2016-17 season, he averaged a career-best 25.5 points and was third in the MVP voting.

Both DeRozan and Leonard are scheduled to appear in Las Vegas next week at a USA Basketball training camp — one that will be led by Spurs coach Gregg Popovich.

Former NHL Goalie Ray Emery Drowns

By STEPHEN WHYNO AP Hockey Writer Former NHL goaltender Ray Emery has drowned in his hometown of Hamilton, Ontario. He was 35.

Hamilton Police said Emery was identified as the victim of the swimming accident Sunday morning. Staff sergeant Paul Evans said police received a call just after 6 a.m. that an adult swimmer did not surface and that the Niagara Police assisted in the recovery effort. Emery's body was recovered Sunday afternoon.

Nicknamed “Razor” for his aggressive style, Emery played parts of 11 seasons with the Ottawa Senators, Philadelphia Flyers, Chicago Blackhawks and Anaheim Ducks from 2003-2015. He helped the Senators reach the Stanley Cup Final in 2007 and won it as a backup with the Blackhawks in 2013.

Emery dealt with off-ice problems throughout his career, including an incident of road rage, assault of a trainer in Russia and behavior that led to him being sent home from Ottawa's training camp. Teammates and executives lauded Emery's mentorship and leadership, especially in his final professional season in the American Hockey League in 2015-16.

Black Owned Business in the Trump Economy

By Marisol Beas California Black Media Leo Hickman, the founder of Classy Hippie Tea Company, has been in business for seven years. Hickman said under the current economy “there is monetary value, even if you are losing” because Trump “just put in tax breaks for owners,” the American Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, that can be written off.

The American Tax Cuts and Jobs Act passed in December and will have some benefits to small business owners. The National Federation of Independent Business says small business owners will be able to file as “pass through entities,” which allows owners to file and pay as an individual.

In addition, the NFIB says business owners can deduct up to 20 percent of claimable income. According to the NFIM, taxpayers will not have to file deductions to claim the deduction, “and may simultaneously claim this deduction and the standard deduction.”

Hickman said he started his tea company after backpacking around the world. He noticed how all of the different cultures sat over tea and talked about the community, and how “from there at a community level you could activate and start changing the community.”

Hickman says that although the Trump economy is helping his business the system was “not built for us.” But he believes that African Americans are not “excluded, where [they] are included is in the programs as workers and the laborer” but that “you have to figure out a way to get access to get to the other side.”

Once you are there Hickman says, “There is going to be bigotry, racism, and hatred that will try to keep you where you are at… but you have to figure out how to bubble up.” Because Hickman says, “If you are going to be in this country you have to be about money.”

Hickman says there are no actual losses when you can write things off, “that’s why this side is set up for them, it was built for you to take a risk.” But Hickman says that African Americans need to “take the small risk of…thirty five dollars to get your business filed,” because if you don’t “we miss out on a couple hundred grand.”

“You are creating your own economy… it comes down to how much effort you are going to put into educating yourself, and it opens up the world; that’s were freedom lies.”

Cheryl Brownlee, the CEO of CB Communications, started her small business 20 years ago. Now, under the Trump economy Brownlee said, “A lot of things [African American business owners] had the opportunity to be a part of before are changing” and those “opportunities are being taken away.”

Brownlee started her business 20 years ago in her living room as an idea, launching CB communications officially in

2000. CB Communications has partnered with organizations like The Black Advocates for State Services, Café De California, The International Black Women’s Policy Institute, and the California Black Expo.

“We started out…in Sacramento and now we are international,” Brownlee said, working in countries like “Belize, the Bahamas, Bermuda, and [now] Ghana.”

Brownlee and Hickman’s businesses are clear cases of success but perhaps anomalies in the Trump economy. The U.S. Bureau of Labor statistics projects the growth rate of the Black labor force to be slower than the growth rate of the black population between 2018-2026. Furthermore, the overall labor force of Black Americans has been on the decline and is between 5.4 percent-10.1 percent in California.

Brownlee said, “I don’t think that when you are a small business. You have many resources” they are “limited.” The Guidant Financial Small Business Trends and Statistics show that 67 percent of small business owners face the lack of capital, marketing, and advertising efforts.

African American small businesses exist in California but a majority of them are not certified in the State, Brownlee stated.

“The small business administration …[found] that there is ten thousand African American businesses in the state of California.”

Brownlee said the Black Chamber of Commerce is making efforts to find the business owners to help them get registered.

Brownlee said this is important because this gives African American business owners the “opportunity to be on the list, so when individuals are looking for businesses they can be contracted.”

Under the Trump economy, Brownlee says, it is “big businesses [who take] contracts and if they want to work with small business they may work with small women owned businesses, not African American women, just to meet that check box.” According to the Public Law Research Institute this check box is the federal preferences in public employment, contracting, and education based on ethnicity to eradicate discrimination. “In business, the mindset is the same... racism is becoming blatantly more open” Brownlee said.

“It’s really hard” for small minority businesses, there has to be “organizations advocating on your behalf, to show the value” of African American businesses Brownlee said.

African American businesses need more access to education and tools, Brownlee stated. We need to have “more partnerships” within the African American community.

African American business owners “have to be more conscious, more aware, because we are not going to survive in this administration or any administration really going forward, unless we really understand what business is.”

Record Muslim’s Run

By PHILIP MARCELO and JEFF KAROUB Associated Press SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) _ A liberal woman of color with zero name recognition and little funding takes down a powerful, long serving congressman from her own political party.

When Tahirah Amatul-Wadud heard about Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's stunning upset over U.S. Rep. Joe Crowley in New York's Democratic primary last month, the first-time candidate saw parallels with her own longshot campaign for Congress in western Massachusetts.

The 44-year-old Muslim, African-American civil rights lawyer, who is taking on a 30-year congressman and ranking Democrat on the influential House Ways and Means Committee, said she wasn't alone, as encouragement, volunteers and donations started pouring in.

“We could barely stay on top of the residual love,” said Amatul-Wadud, U.S. Rep. Richard Neal's lone challenger in the state's Sept. 4 Democratic primary. “It sent a message to all of our volunteers, voters and supporters that winning is very possible.”

From Congress to state legislatures and school boards, Muslim Americans spurred to action by the anti-Muslim policies and rhetoric of President Donald Trump and his supporters are running for elected offices in numbers not seen since before the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, say Muslim groups and political observers.

Many, like Amatul-Wadud, hope to ride the surge of progressive activism within the Democratic Party that delivered Ocasio-Cortez's unlikely win and could help propel the Democrats back to power in November.

Still, the path to victory can be tougher for a Muslim American. Some promising campaigns already have fizzled out while many more face strong anti-Muslim backlash.

In Michigan, Democrat candidate for governor Abdul ElSayed continues to face unfounded claims from a GOP rival that he has ties to the controversial Muslim Brotherhood, even though Republican and Democratic politicians alike have denounced the accusations as “conspiracy theories.”

In Rochester, Minnesota, mayoral candidate Regina Mustafa has notified authorities of at least two instances where antiMuslim threats were posted on her social media accounts.\ And in Arizona, U.S. Senate candidate Deedra Abboud received a torrent of Islamophobic attacks on Facebook last July that prompted outgoing U.S. Sen. Jeff Flake, the Republican

lawmaker Abboud is hoping to replace, to come to her defense on Twitter.

“I'm a strong believer that we have to face this rhetoric,” said Abboud, who has also had right-wing militant groups the Fraternal Order of Alt-Knights and the Proud Boys stage armed protests her campaign events. “We can't ignore it or pretend like it's a fringe element anymore. We have to let the ugly face show so that we can decide if that is us.”

There were as many as 90 Muslim-Americans running for national or statewide offices this election cycle, a number that Muslim groups say was unprecedented, at least in the post-9/11 era.

But recent primaries have whittled the field down to around 50, a number that still far exceeds the dozen or so that ran in 2016, said Shaun Kennedy, co-founder of Jetpac, a Massachusetts nonprofit that helps train Muslim-American candidates.

Among the candidates to fall short were California physician Asif Mahmood, who placed third in last month's primary for state insurance commissioner, despite raising more than $1 million. And in Texas, wealthy businessman Tahir Javed finished a distant second in his Democratic primary for Congress, despite an endorsement from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York.

Nine candidates for Congress are still in the running, according to Jetpac's tally. At least 18 others are campaigning for state legislature and 10 more seek major statewide and local offices, such as governor, mayor and city council. Even more are running for more modest offices like local planning board and school committee.

The next critical stretch of primaries is in August.

In Michigan, at least seven Muslim Americans are on the Aug. 7 ballot, including El-Sayed, who could become the nation's first Muslim governor.

In Minnesota, the decision by Keith Ellison, the nation's first Muslim congressman, to run for state attorney general has set off a political frenzy for his congressional seat that includes two Muslim candidates, both Democrats: Ilhan Omar, the country's first Somali-American state lawmaker, and Jamal Abdulahi, a Somali-American activist.

Following are the solutions that will be made available starting August 1: Lilly Diabetes Solution Center helpline The helpline will be a dedicated service that identifies solutions for people who have trouble affording their insulin.

The solution center helpline will be staffed with people who find options based upon the personal circumstances of the person in

need – including their location, type of insurance, and income level. The goal of the helpline is to ensure each person who uses Lilly insulin is matched with the best cost solution available. The phone number will be made available on August 1.

Free clinics Lilly is donating insulin to three relief agencies – Americares, Direct Relief, and Dispensary of Hope – to eventually supply nearly 150 free clinics across the U.S. with Lilly insulin.

Helpline operators will point people toward clinics that are most convenient to them and explain how to access them. Lilly is working now with the relief agencies to identify as many clinics as possible that can adequately store and distribute insulin to people who need it. (Qualifications will differ clinic-to- clinic).

Point of sale savings We are increasing our financial assistance for people who may need help paying for insulin. The helpline will use a suite of solutions to find answers for people who face the highest out-ofpocket costs such as people who are uninsured and people who pay significant costs when they are in the deductible phase of their high-deductible commercial insurance plans. The solutions will be customizable based upon personal circumstances and will include options for all Lilly insulins.

Immediate Needs for Insulin If someone has an immediate need for insulin, they will be able to call the Lilly Diabetes Solution Center to learn about immediate and longer-term options. “Our goal is to ensure everyone who needs insulin can get it,” said Mike Mason, senior vice president of Connected Care and Insulins for Lilly Diabetes.

More information on these programs, including how to access savings, will be provided on August 1. Lilly will promote the availability of these programs in a variety of ways, including through paid advertising, social media, and ongoing media outreach.

“Lilly has actively engaged in discussions about the price of insulin – and potential solutions for people paying the highest out-of-pocket costs – with patients, caregivers, healthcare providers, advocacy groups, lawmakers, and thought leaders across the diabetes community. Our conversations have been meaningful, and we’ve taken them seriously,” Mason said. “We look forward to introducing these solutions, and others, that will help more people who live with diabetes.”

CVS Apologizes After Mngrs Call Cops on Black Customer Received by Newsfinder from AP CHICAGO (AP) – CVS Health is apologizing after a black customer says white store managers in Chicago accused her of trying to use a phony coupon.

Camilla Hudson posted cellphone video of one of the managers appearing nervous. Morry Matson's left hand shakes as he calls police around 11:30 p.m. Friday.

The 53-year-old Hudson says another manager directly challenged her when she tried to use a manufacturer's coupon for a free product. She tells The Associated Press that he was “hostile.”

Omar's chances of emerging from a field of five Democratic candidates in Minnesota's Aug. 14 primary was bolstered by a recent endorsement from the state Democratic Party, but ElSayed is an underdog in his gubernatorial race, he said.

Other Muslim-American candidates might fare better in Michigan, which has one of the nation's largest Arab-American populations, Skelley added.

There, former state Rep. Rashida Tlaib has raised more money than her Democratic rivals in the race to succeed Democratic Rep. John Conyers, who resigned last year amid allegations of sexual misconduct. Former Obama administration official Fayrouz Saad is also running as a Democrat in the wide open race to succeed Republican Rep. David Trott, who isn't seeking re-election.

Either could become the first Muslim woman elected to Congress, which has only ever had two Muslim members: outgoing Ellison and Rep. Andre Carson, an Indiana Democrat seeking re-election.

Saad, who served most recently as director of Detroit's Office of Immigrant Affairs, recognizes the importance of representing her community in an era of rising Islamophobia.

The Facebook video shows Matson talking to police on the phone. No action was taken when officers arrived.

Matson is running for Chicago City Council. In a letter to Attorney General Jeff Sessions posted on his campaign website, he claimed he was a state delegate for Donald Trump, but the Illinois Republican Party said he wasn't a delegate to the Republican National Convention.

The 35-year-old broke from the conservative Republican politics of her Lebanese immigrant parents following the 9/11 attacks because she felt Arabs and Muslims were unfairly targeted.

“I felt the way to push back against that was to be at the table,” said Saad, adding that her parents' political leanings have also since moved to the left. “We have to step up and be voices for our communities and not wait for others to speak on behalf of us.”

But not all Muslim candidates feel that way.

In San Diego, California, 37-year-old Republican congressional candidate Omar Qudrat declined to comment on how Islamophobia has impacted his campaign, including instances when his faith have been called into question by members of his own political party.

Instead, the political newcomer, who is one of at least three Muslim Republicans running nationwide this year, provided a statement touting his main campaign issues as faces Democratic U.S. Rep. Scott Peters in November: addressing San Diego's high number of homeless military veterans, improving public education and expanding economic opportunities for city residents.

“Running for public office is about advancing the interests of your constituents and the American people,” Qudrat's statement reads. “Nothing else.”

By LYNN ELBER AP Television Writer LOS ANGELES (AP) - Sterling K. Brown and Donald Glover aren't such Emmy outliers this year.

More than a third of the 101 acting nominations for the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards went to ethnic minorities, according to an analysis by The Associated Press. That's up from a quarter of the field last year, when Brown (“This Is Us”) and Glover (“Atlanta”) won top acting awards.

Both men are nominated again, along with noteworthy first-timers including Latino actors Ricky Martin and Penelope Cruz for “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story,” Tiffany Haddish for “Saturday Night Live,” Issa Rae for “Insecure” and John Legend for “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert.” Darren Criss, who is of Filipino descent, was also nominated for “American Crime Story.”

Sandra Oh, the Canadian-born actress of “Grey's Anatomy” fame, became the first nominee of Asian descent in the leading drama actress category. Oh, who earned five supporting actress bids for “Grey's,” has earned critical praise for her role as a spy hunting a female assassin in BBC America's “Killing Eve.” “I think we're all happy with the direction we're going.

This is the most diverse class of performer nominees we've had ... which is fantastic,” Maury McIntyre, TV academy president, said Thursday after the nominations for the Sept. 17 awards were announced.

Only one of this year's categories, supporting actor in a drama, lacked any performers of color. In three categories, more than half the field are minorities.

That includes supporting actor in a comedy series, with black actors Tituss Burguss (“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”), Brian Tyree Henry (“Atlanta”) and Kenan Thompson (“Saturday Night Live”) and Tony Shalhoub (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), of Lebanese descent, competing with Louie Anderson (“Baskets”) Alec Baldwin (“Saturday Night Live”) and Henry Winkler (“Barry”).

In 2017, the nominations showed significant gaps in Emmy progress. “Master of None” star Aziz Ansari, who is of Indian heritage, was the sole Asian-American to be nominated for a continuing series lead or supporting role. Not a single Latino was included in the marquee acting categories.

The hard-won progress made by the African-American stars and makers of shows including “black-ish” and “Atlanta” has brought them creative influence and visibility that Latinos

and Asian-Americans, America's first and third largest ethnic groups, respectively, are still aiming to achieve. The three ethnic groups make up a combined 37.2 percent of the U.S. population, according to U.S. Census figures.

The TV industry has faced pressure to change in recent years, including from a multi-ethnic civil rights coalition formed after major networks fielded a fall 1999 slate of new shows with only white stars. Networks and producers have taken steps to boost opportunities, but with uneven results.

Leonard James III, chair of the NAACP Image Awards committee, said last year that a long record of fighting for civil rights is behind the significant African-American gains.

“We’ve been engaged with the Hollywood community for 100 years,” James said, including NAACP-led protests against D.W. Griffith's “The Birth of a Nation” in 1915, just six years after the organization was founded. “I think you're beginning to see some of that work get very positive results.”

NBC's “Saturday Night Live,” with 21 nominations this year, has now been nominated 252 times in its history, a record for any show. “Game of Thrones” is second with 129 and this year surpassed “ER” as the top drama nominee.

She had heard my message about the

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ The first black female member of the General Assembly is being nominated to the Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame.

The late Margaret E. Morton was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1972. She served four terms, representing Bridgeport. She later won a Democratic primary against an incumbent senator and then went on to win the general election after a lengthy court battle with Bridgeport Democrats.

She served six terms in the Senate, eventually becoming deputy president pro tempore in 1990. She retired in 1992 and died in 2012.

Four current black women legislators nominated Morton to the hall of fame, citing her “quiet determination” to fight prejudice and racism.

Nominations for the hall of fame are accepted on an ongoing basis and reviewed by a consulting scholars committee.

California Mayors Seek $1.5 Billion to Help Homeless

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) _ Mayors from California’s eleven largest cities on Wednesday asked state lawmakers to provide $1.5 billion to help with what they say is a growing homeless crisis.

They are backing legislation that would require the cities to provide matching funds, creating a $3 billion pot of money to be spent on affordable housing, temporary shelters, supportive services and outreach.

They said in an earlier letter to legislative leaders that lawmakers should use a quarter of the state’s $6.1 billion budget surplus to help the homeless.

San Diego Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer called it “the most pressing issue facing California cities today.’’

The mayors cited a 2017 federal estimate that the most populous state now has more than 134,000 homeless people.

Their request came the same day that two Democratic state senators announced they will seek $2 billion for affordable housing, also in response to the mayors’ requests.

The bipartisan group includes mayors from Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, San Francisco, Fresno, Long Beach, Sacramento, Oakland, Bakersfield, Anaheim and Santa Ana. The proposals come less than six months after Gov. Jerry Brown signed 15 housing bills into law. They imposed a new $75 real estate transaction fee and placed a $4 billion housing bond on the November ballot.

First Black Female Nominated to State Hall of Fame HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ The first black female

member of the General Assembly is being nominated to the Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame.

The late Margaret E. Morton was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1972. She served four terms, representing Bridgeport. She later won a Democratic primary against an incumbent senator and then went on to win the general election after a lengthy court battle with Bridgeport Democrats.

She served six terms in the Senate, eventually becoming deputy president pro tempore in 1990. She retired in 1992 and died in 2012.

Four current black women legislators nominated Morton to the hall of fame, citing her “quiet determination” to fight prejudice and racism.

Nominations for the hall of fame are accepted on an ongoing basis and reviewed by a consulting scholars committee.

California Mayors Seek $1.5 Billion to Help Homeless

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) _ Mayors from California’s eleven largest cities on Wednesday asked state lawmakers to provide $1.5 billion to help with what they say is a growing homeless crisis.

They are backing legislation that would require the cities to provide matching funds, creating a $3 billion pot of money to be spent on affordable housing, temporary shelters, supportive services and outreach.

They said in an earlier letter to legislative leaders that lawmakers should use a quarter of the state’s $6.1 billion budget surplus to help the homeless.

San Diego Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer called it “the most pressing issue facing California cities today.’’

The mayors cited a 2017 federal estimate that the most populous state now has more than 134,000 homeless people.

Their request came the same day that two Democratic state senators announced they will seek $2 billion for affordable housing, also in response to the mayors’ requests.

The bipartisan group includes mayors from Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, San Francisco, Fresno, Long Beach, Sacramento, Oakland, Bakersfield, Anaheim and Santa Ana. The proposals come less than six months after Gov. Jerry Brown signed 15 housing bills into law. They imposed a new $75 real estate transaction fee and placed a $4 billion housing bond on the November ballot.

Texas Woman Defecates in Pants to Hide Drugs CORSICANA, Texas (AP) _ Police say a Texas woman attempted to hide evidence during an arrest by defecating in her pants and using the feces to conceal drugs.

Officers in Corsicana, about 55 miles (88 kilometers ) south of Dallas, were investigating a report of a theft at a grocery store on Wednesday when they attempted to subdue a female suspect and take her into custody. Police say they placed Shannen Martin in the back of a police cruiser where they say she intentionally defecated in her pants then hid a crack pipe, 2.3 grams of crack cocaine and a Valentine’s Day card in her excrement.

Officers had to sift through the woman’s feces to retrieve the evidence after Martin was booked on charges of tampering with evidence and possession of a controlled substance.

By LYNN ELBER AP Television Writer LOS ANGELES (AP) _ When Netflix snapped HBO's 17year streak as Emmy nominations leader, more than bragging rights switched hands. It represented the breathtaking change in how audiences get and watch TV and the threat to traditional TV networks from streaming services.

Especially one like Netflix, whose multibillion-dollar investment in programming allowed it to rocket Thursday to 112 nominations just five years after launching its first original series, “House of Cards.” That's double the total of nods it earned in 2016 and just ahead of HBO's 108 nods (down two from 2017).

Another streamed series, Hulu's “The Handmaid's Tale,” earned 20 nominations and a chance to defend its title as best drama series at the 70th Primetime Emmy ceremony airing Sept.

17 on NBC. HBO still boasts the year's most-nominated series, “Game of Thrones” (22 nods) and “Westworld” (20), while Netflix fielded “The Crown” (13 nods) and “Stranger Things (12).

“The more distribution platforms, the more content's getting created, the more people are going to be working. ... It's good news for us in the industry,” said Maury McIntyre, TV academy president. It's also good news for viewers, he said, who will “always be able to find something they're going to like.”

“It all about niche broadcasting now. You can make a show and find an audience. It may not be a core audience, but it can be a hard-core audience,” he said.

Ted Sarandos, Netflix's chief content officer, saluted “our creative partners on their unprecedented success today” in a statement noting that the nominations were gained across a wide variety of categories, including scripted, documentary and comedy specials.

Netflix's deep-pockets approach has lured a number of TV's biggest creative stars, including Shonda Rhimes and Ryan Murphy, away from traditional outlets.

Broadcast networks are taking the hardest blow, with their ratings as well as awards diminishing as viewers search out the more distinctive _ and edgy _ programming on unregulated cable and streaming outlets. Police procedurals and the current network rage for sitcom revivals certainly failed to impress Emmy voters.

The short-lived revival of “Roseanne,” canceled because of star Roseanne Barr's racist tweet, drew only one major nomination, a supporting actress nod for Laurie Metcalf. Another revival, “Will & Grace,” got Emmy love for nominees Megan Mullally and Molly Shannon but the main stars and series itself were snubbed.

In the drama and comedies series categories, NBC drama “This Is Us” and ABC sitcom “black-ish” are the sole network contenders. NBC topped the broadcast tally with 78 nominations, fueled by 21 bids for “Saturday Night Live,” still on a satiric tear against the Trump administration.

The newbie comedies aced out long-time Emmy favorite “Modern Family,” a five-time winner and perennial nominee since it debuted in 2009 on ABC. “Killing Eve” star Sandra Oh made as the first actress of Asian descent to be nominated for lead acting honors in a drama series. Oh had earned five supporting bids for “Grey's Anatomy.”

“I feel tremendous gratitude and joy with this nomination” and am “thrilled” for the show's cast and crew, Oh said in a statement. She added a postscript: “I think my mother at this moment may actually be satisfied”.

The TV industry has made recent strides toward inclusion, with Glover and Sterling K. Brown of “This Is Us” winning top acting awards last year and both nominated again. Only one nominations category is all-white, and in three categories minority actors account for more than half the nominees.

Among the notable first-time nominees: Issa Rae for “Insecure,” Darren Criss, Ricky Martin and Penelope Cruz for “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story,” Tiffany Haddish for “Saturday Night Live,” Letitia Wright for “Black Museum (Black Mirror)” and John Legend for “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert.”

If Legend wins, he'll join the rarified club of “EGOT” performers who've won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony.

HBO's fantasy dragons-and-swords saga is a two-time best drama winner that sat out the last year's awards because of its production schedule. Although it's up for top series honors, it drew only three supporting actor bids for cast members Lena Headey, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Peter Dinklage.

“The Handmaid's Tale,” the dystopian sci-fi series based on Margaret Atwood's novel, drew 20 bids, including one for last year's best actress winner, Elisabeth Moss, and supporting bids for Alexis Bledel, Ann Dowd, Yvonne Strahovski and Joseph Fiennes.

Other drama series contenders are “Westworld” and “The Americans,” nominated for its final season and with nods for stars Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys.

Competing with Moss, Oh and Russell for lead drama actress are Claire Foy for “The Crown,” Tatiana Maslany of “Orphan Black” and Evan Rachel Wood of “Westworld.”

Stranded Woman Drank Water from Moss After Car Crash

By ROBERT JABLON Associated Press LOS ANGELES (AP) - A self-described beachcomber says it was her luckiest find yet: A woman who survived a 250-foot car plunge off a cliff and a week stranded on a remote California beach.

“We freakin' love that beach and we're so glad she's alive,” Chelsea Moore said Monday as she described the afternoon last Friday when she and her husband found 23-year-old Angela Hernandez of Portland.

Hernandez had been driving to her sister's home in Lancaster, near Los Angeles, on July 6 when a small animal crossed in front of her, causing her to swerve and lose control of her car, she wrote from her hospital bed Sunday in a Facebook account.

“The only thing I really remember after that was waking up,” Hernandez wrote. “I was still in my car and I could feel water rising over my knees. My head hurt and when I touched it, I found blood on my hands.”

Hernandez said she broke a window of her car, jumped into the ocean and swam ashore. She fell asleep on the beach and realized what had happened after she woke up.

Moore, 34, and her husband Chad, 31, of Morro Bay were camping above an oceanside cliff in the rugged Big Sur area of Monterey County when they decided to climb down a cliff to a remote beach to find some good surfing and fishing spots _ and a little adventure.

“We're avid beachcombers. We get excited about sea glass and abalone shells,” Moore said.

Instead, they came on a car bumper and a short time later spotted a rusty and wrecked Jeep. Nobody was in it.

The couple took the license plate to show authorities. They also saw items scattered around that they also collected, among them, a poster for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Ohio, Moore said.

“In my head, I thought that maybe someone had died and we would give these items to the next of kin,” she said. “We both agreed that there weren't survivors.”

But just in case, they walked further along the beach.

After another quarter-mile, the Moores heard a cry for help, and then another.

Then they saw Hernandez.

“She was really happy and she wasn't sure we were real,”

23-year-old Angela Hernandez of Portland was driving to her sister’s home near Los Angeles when she lost control of her car.

Moore said. “She told us we were the first people she had seen in days but she didn't know how many days exactly. We told her we were going to help her and get her off that beach.”

Hernandez had two black eyes and burst blood vessels in her eyes.

“Her clothes were in tatters. Her socks were in scraps” and she was shoeless, Moore said. “She was very wet. At high tide there's no beach. She said sometimes she'd been sleeping and she'd wake up at night with waves smacking her.”

“I found a high spot I was able to climb up to and found myself there almost every day,” Hernandez wrote. “I could see cars driving across the cliff and felt like if I could yell just loud enough, that one could hear or see me. That's all it would take to make it back to my family. Just one person noticing me.”

By the third day, she made her way back to her wrecked car, found a 10-inch radiator hose and eventually used it and her hands to collect water.

Hernandez said she developed a daily ritual of walking the beach in search of new high ground, screaming for help at the top of her lungs and collecting fresh water.

Everything changed on Friday, when Hernandez woke up and saw a woman walking across the shore.

“I thought it was a dream,” Hernandez wrote.

While her husband stayed with Hernandez, Moore raced and sloshed her way through water and poison oak, scrambled up a rugged cliff trail to the top to get help from the camp's host and brought back down a pack of food and clothing.

“She chose a peanut butter granola bar. We wrapped her in blankets...tried to keep her comfortable and talking.”

Hours later, rescuers were able to take Hernandez back up the cliff and helicopter her to a hospital.

“We're just really lucky beachcombers,” Chelsea said.

“She's the hero.”

Moore and her husband spoke to Hernandez and her sister by phone in the hospital on Sunday night.

“She told us she wants to name her kids after us,” Chelsea said. “We're like equally in awe of each other. It's kind of cool.”

LA Man Gets Home Detention for Threatening Maxine Waters LOS ANGELES (AP) - A Los Angeles man who threatened to kill Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters in a profanity-laced voicemail was sentenced Monday to six months of home detention.

Anthony Scott Lloyd, 45, also was sentenced in federal court in Los Angeles to three years of probation and 100 hours of community service.

Lloyd pleaded guilty in April to threatening a U.S. official.

He told the FBI he was upset with Waters for comments criticizing President Donald Trump on a talk-radio show.

“If you continue to make threats toward the president, you're going to wind up dead, Maxine, ‘cause we’ll kill you,”

Lloyd said in a voicemail to Waters' office last October, according to an affidavit filed in court written by the FBI. Lloyd also used a racial slur against Waters, who's black, and a homophobic remark in the voicemail, according to the affidavit.

Waters said in a letter ahead of sentencing that a lenient sentence for Lloyd would only embolden others to engage in similar conduct and may endanger the community.

“Given the political climate of our country in which passions are inflamed across the political spectrum, I believe we must have effective deterrents within the legal system to discourage threats of violence and intimidation against elected officials,” Waters wrote.

Black Women Have the Highest Amount of Student Loan Debt Nationwide — Education may be priceless but it does come with a price tag. And for Black women in the United States, it’s even more expensive! A new study has discovered that AfricanAmerican women have the highest average amount of student loan debt… and it boils down to race and gender inequality.

A recent report released by American Association of University Women entitled “Deeper in Debt: Women and Student Loans” revealed that African-American women accumulate an average of $30,400 of debt by the time they graduate from college, in comparison with $22,000 on white women and $19,500 on white men.

All in all, women owe almost twice the country’s student loan debt amounting to $890 billion, compared to $490 billion owed by men.

Kim Churches, the Executive Director of AAUW, added that the debts women carry over their careers are even aggravated if they face the gender pay gap. “This debt is an albatross for many women as they embark on careers and work to support their households and families. And, it only gets worse over time when coupled with the gender pay gap,” she said.

That happens even though women account for 56 percent of enrolled college students and are most probable to graduate than men owing money at 71 percent for female graduates and 66 percent for male graduates.

Although women have higher graduation rates, because Black women barely make 63 cents for every dollar white men make, they still find it harder to pay off their student loan debts.

Meanwhile, there are some solutions presented in the report which includes increasing state and federal funding of public colleges and universities and ensuring and expanding Pell Grants for low-income students.
