The key, McGowan said, is to empower parents and students, beginning in elementary school, with information about the importance of a rigorous education in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics commonly known as STEM. “Starting that conversation early with students and encouraging them to look at fields of study that would prepare them for any type of energy industry career path, whether that path is in oil and natural gas, electric utilities, wind, solar or renewables…if they have that STEM background they’re going to be better served as students and as future professionals than if they didn’t have that background,” McGowan said.

NCPC is the division of API that represents the oil and natural gas industry in North Carolina. McGowan joined API after serving as the director of regulatory affairs for the North Carolina Association of Realtors.

McGowan recently met with the North Carolina Black Press Association to discuss strategies for improving energy literacy and sharing aspects of the industry that many families in the Black community don’t know exist.

“It was a great first step in opening, what I hope will be, an on-going dialogue and relationship,” McGowan said. “That’s the model that we want to employ throughout our state network, because we recognize the value in those relationships.”

API partnered with the National Newspaper Publishers Association to increase the awareness about job and business opportunities in the energy sector. The NNPA is a trade group that represents more than 200 Black-owned media companies in the United States, that reach more than 20 million readers, combined, in print and online every week.

“We not only have a need for a diverse workforce, but also a younger workforce,” McGowan said. “We need new workers to come into the industry.”

McGowan said that a critical component to NCPC’s outreach efforts in North Carolina also includes engagement with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the state.

In a partnership with the American Association of Blacks in Energy, NCPC hosted an event about opportunities in the energy sector at Winston-Salem State University. NCPC also invited

LA Rams Investing in the Community

By Cameron Buford whatsgoodinsports.com In conjunction with the Partnership (a) for Los Angeles Unified School District and Sharefest (b) the Los Angeles continue their years of investment into their community. In just one day the Rams have added $100k worth of modifications to the 20th Street Elementary School in Los Angeles. The 2018 rookie class, undrafted free agents, staff, and neighborhood volunteers pitched in to complete the transformation of the school’s recreational area for students.

For several years now, the Los Angeles Rams have invested in the communities where they reside. This day of service was for representatives from the Rams to upgrade the play and social spaces around the 20th St. School. These upgrades would also include building a new playground structure, painting murals and basketball backboards, and improving some of the landscaping on the campus.

Since returning home to Los Angeles, Rams staff members have provided more than 3,000 hours of community service and impacted 23 non-profits and 43 schools through the Staff Day of Service program. To assist and remain visible in the community the Rams front office staff takes time out of the office to volunteer with local non-profits. Credit to the Rams brass for this Community Improvement Project and congratulations to them for this becoming the cornerstone volunteer effort of the their “Staff Days of Service” program.

ALBANY, Ga. (AP) - Leaders of the Southern Baptist Convention are expelling a Georgia church that was accused of racial discrimination.

The denomination’s media office tweeted Monday that members of the executive committee had voted to withdraw fellowship from Raleigh White Baptist Church in Albany, Georgia.

The tweet says the church is being disassociated over “clear evidence” of racism. The church’s local association severed ties earlier this year.

A phone message left at the church wasn’t returned immediately.

News reports say the majority white Raleigh White Baptist agreed in 2015 to share its building with the majority black New Seasons Church, which outgrew it in size. Reports say Raleigh White members blocked members of the black church from entering one Sunday in March, prompting action.

Black Religious Leaders Criticize Sessions’ Use of Scripture WASHINGTON (AP) _ Several prominent members of the black clergy on Friday criticized Attorney General Jeff Sessions for using the Bible to justify separating immigrant children from parents.

The Council of Bishops of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, along with the Revs. Jesse Jackson and William Barber, in separate statements, called Sessions’ use of biblical scripture incorrect.

“The Bible does not justify discrimination masked as racism, sexism, economic inequality, oppression or the abuse of children,” said the council, leaders of the denomination.

In May, Sessions expressed that there will be “zero tolerance” for anyone who crossed the border illegally. About 2,000 children have been separated from their families at the border over a six-week period of crackdowns on illegal entry into the United States, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

During a speech to law enforcement on Thursday, Sessions said: “I would cite you to the Apostle Paul and his clear and wise command in Romans 13, to obey the laws of the government because God has ordained them for the purpose of order.”

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders has defended Sessions’ stance, saying “it is biblical to enforce the law.”

The Justice Department did not immediately return e-mailed requests for comment.

The bishops called for House Speaker Paul Ryan and other Republican lawmakers to reprimand Sessions.

“Why are Black and Brown immigrants living in America with fear that the American dream has become a nightmare for the least, the last, and left out?” the AME clergy said in a statement.

“Twisting the word of God in defense of immoral practices was a tactic used to justify keeping Black people in chattel slavery, committing genocide against Native Americans and segregating people under Jim Crow,” said Barber and Liz Theoharis, cochairs of the Poor People’s Campaign, in a separate statement.

Jackson was also critical of Sessions, saying in the past, Bible verses have been used to justify various atrocities. “The government tolerated lynching just like they tolerated slavery,” said Jackson.

New Chief Justice Vows to Focus on Equal Access

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Richard Robinson has been sworn in as Connecticut’s first African-American chief justice and says he will focus on making sure everyone has equal access to the court system.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy swore in Robinson at the state Supreme Court Monday. Judges, politicians, family and friends filled the courtroom.

Malloy says Robinson will be a great leader and praised him for helping others understand the difficulties minorities face in society.

Robinson officially has been chief justice since the legislature unanimously confirmed his nomination last month.

The 60-year-old Stamford native has served on the Supreme Court for more than four years. He succeeded Chase Rogers, who retired in February.

Lawmakers rejected the Democratic governor’s first nominee, Justice Andrew McDonald, who would have been the nation’s first openly gay state chief justice.

Chicago Reader Now Black-Owned

By Stacy M. Brown NNPA Newswire Contributor Dorothy Leavell, the fiery and fearless chairman of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) and publisher of the Chicago and Gary Crusader newspapers, announced that she has led a group in purchasing the “Chicago Reader.”

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but it’s a historic purchase that brings the alternative newspaper with an audited weekly circulation of about 85,000 into the NNPA family of 220 African American newspapers and media companies.

The paper had most recently been owned by the Chicago Sun-Times, which reportedly will maintain a 15 percent stake in the Reader after the sale closes later this month.

“I see this as an opportunity to enhance the value of the Black Press through the [Chicago Reader],” Leavell told NNPA Newswire. “It is [now] definitely Black-owned.”

Sun-Times CEO Edwin Eisendrath joined Leavell at the Rainbow PUSH Convention in Chicago to first reveal the sale.

Such a marriage perhaps had less than a small chance of being consummated 25 years ago when the Reader staff poked fun at the NNPA and Leavell after Civil Rights Leader Nelson Mandela failed to attend a Black Press convention when he toured

America after being released from prison in 1993.

In an article headlined, “Black Press Feels Neglected,” the Reader noted how Mandela found time for Ted Koppel, The New York Times and The Washington Post, but not the NNPA, which held its annual convention in Chicago at that time.

“The NNPA, which is the nation’s principal Black Press organization, was deeply insulted,” according to the article, which

quoted Leavell, then Secretary of the NNPA. Leavell and then-NNPA Executive Director Steve Davis jointly told the media that it wasn’t Mandela’s fault but those who scheduled him. “The visit has brought us to the realization that we must insist on the right to participate in all decisions involving the welfare of Black people,” they declared.

Now a quarter of a century later, Leavell has purchased the Reader.

Born in Pine Bluff, Arkansas on October 23, 1944, Leavell attended Roosevelt University.

She was first elected president of the NNPA in June of 1995 for a two-year term and was re-elected in June 1997 ending her term in 1999.

Leavell was credited with increasing the visibility and international stature of the trade organization. In June of 2006, Leavell was elected Chairman of the NNPA Foundation.

She was voted in as national chairman again in 2017.

Money for Low-Achieving Students

By Manny Otiko California Black Media The California Senate has approved an almost $200 billion budget which set asides money for several issues that progressive groups deem important such as education, homelessness and transportation. The budget also approves $300 million for schools to boost the academic performance of underachieving students.

This was an issue that black voters and legislators had lobbied for. However, it is a compromise with Assemblywoman Shirley Weber (D-San Diego) who had requested ongoing funding for this project. The $300 million is a one-time funding allocation.

“We cannot look the other way anymore. African-American kids in California persistently fall behind academically,” said Weber when she was lobbying for the funding. “And this problem is not limited to low-income students either. Parents have been patiently waiting for something to change, but it has not. Providing additional resources for the lowest-performing students is now no longer an option, but a necessity.” Other takeaways from the

budget include: • K-14 education received $78.4 billion in Proposition 56 funding.

• Higher education also received a share of the budget. The University of California system received an additional $210 million, while the California State University System received an additional $260 million.

• $15.9 billion was set aside to protect against an economic downturn.

• $500 million has been allocated for emergency aid to deal with the homelessness crisis • The budget allocated $5 billion in Proposition 1 transportation funds to repair and maintain highways.

State Sen. Holly Mitchell (D-Los Angeles) was pleased with the areas the budget addressed. “With this budget, we continue our efforts to strengthen the state’s commitment to human infrastructure, with much needed additional resources for childcare, targeted resources for higher

education and financial aid, additional funds for the courts and diversion and rehabilitative services, and significant ongoing increases to K-14 education,” she said. In a Facebook post-Mitchell wrote, “Happiness is: (1) when the budget bill has your name on it (2) includes major investments for California’s children and (3) it’s done!”

Assembly Budget Committee Member Melissa Melendez (R-Lake Elsinore) criticized the budget, which was passed by a Democratic majority. She questioned if taxpayers were getting their money’s worth. “California has the highest poverty rate in the nation, is ranked lowest for quality of life out of all 50 states, and has become so unaffordable that one million more residents have left the state than have moved here in the last decade,” said Melendez. “At some point, you have to wonder what taxpayers have gotten for the money they send to government. It doesn’t appear to be much.” She added the budget didn’t address pressing issues such as rental costs and rising utility bills.

A Democratic political group launched a legal campaign Wednesday to create additional majority-minority congressional districts in three Southern states, claiming the current maps discriminate against black voters.

Attorneys filed separate federal lawsuits in Alabama, Georgia and Louisiana, challenging congressional maps lawmakers in each state approved in 2011.

The lawsuits filed on behalf of several black voters in each state are backed by the National Redistricting Foundation, a nonprofit affiliate of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, which is chaired by former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder.

The suits claim the districts violate a section of the Voting Rights Act by depriving black voters of an equal opportunity to elect candidates of their choice to the U.S. House of Representatives. They ask the courts to block the three states from holding any more congressional elections under their current maps.

The new lawsuits mean there now are redistricting challenges pending in a dozen states - in some places, multiple lawsuits _alleging racial or political gerrymandering in U.S. House or state legislative districts. The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to rule later this month on at least two of those cases alleging unconstitutional partisan gerrymandering by the Republican-led Legislature in Wisconsin and the Democratic-led Legislature in Maryland.

Though likely too late to affect this year's elections, the lawsuits could force districts to be redrawn in advance of the 2020 elections. The timing is important because any court rulings could set precedents for when all states must redraw legislative districts based on the results of the 2020 Census.

During the last round of redistricting, Republicans who swept to power in many state capitols in 2010 used their newly enlarged majorities to draw districts that Democrats contend have made it harder from them to regain power during the past decade.

Democrats aided by Holder and former President Barack Obama are attempting to better position themselves for the next round of redistricting by backing state legislative candidates, lawsuits and ballot initiatives that would shift redistricting powers away from lawmakers to independent commissions in some states.

“The creation of additional districts in which African Americans have the opportunity to elect their preferred candidates in each of these states will be an important step toward making the voting power of African Americans more equal and moving us closer to the ideals of our representative democracy,” Holder said in a statement Wednesday.

The National Redistricting Foundation also is helping finance pending lawsuits in North Carolina, Texas and Virginia.

Matt Walter, president of the Republican State Leadership Committee, accused Holder of “resorting to politically-motivated litigation aimed at taking away the constitutional authority of elected state legislators to draw district lines.”

“The cynical lawsuits filed today by Holder and the Democrats are crass attempts to rally the left-wing base and to elect more Democrats through litigation, instead of running winning campaigns on policies and ideas that voters actually want,” Walter said in an email Wednesday.

Each state's chief elections official is named as the defendant in each lawsuit.

Holder was serving as attorney general under Obama when the Justice Department cleared the 2011 congressional maps in Alabama, Georgia and Louisiana as complying with the Voting Rights Act. But that doesn't prohibit subsequent lawsuits asserting violations under a different section of the act.

Republicans hold commanding congressional majorities over Democrats in each of the challenged states, controlling six of the seven U.S. House seats in Alabama, 10 of the 14 seats in Georgia and five of the six seats in Louisiana. All of the Republican House members for those states are white and all of the Democratic representatives are black.\ The lawsuit challenging Louisiana's map claims state lawmakers illegally limited minority voting influence by “packing” black voters into one majority-minority district and “cracking,” or spreading them out, among other districts. Louisiana's U.S. House districts shrank from seven to six in 2011 because of slow population growth.

The Alabama suit claims the state's 2011 map illegally “packs” black voters into its sole majority African-American district, now represented by U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell, and “cracks” voters among three other districts. The lawsuit contends that Alabama's black population is large enough, and geographically compact enough, to form a second majority-minority district.

State Sen. Gerald Dial, a Republican who sponsored Alabama’s 2011 redistricting plan, said the map reflects the state's population.

“I think their complaint is not grounded,” Dial said Wednesday.

The Georgia lawsuit claims lawmakers redrew the 12th congressional district to excise black voters in Savannah and add white voters from two counties, reducing the district's black population of voting age from 41.5 percent to 33.3 percent.

Dorothy Cotton, Civil Younger, Rights Pioneer Dies More

By JEFF MARTIN Associated Press ATLANTA (AP) _ Dorothy Cotton, who worked closely with the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., taught nonviolence to demonstrators before marches and sometimes calmed tensions by singing church hymns, has died. She was 88.

Cotton died Sunday afternoon at the Kendal at Ithaca retirement community in New York, said Jared Harrison, a close friend who was at her bedside. Harrison said she had battled illnesses recently but didn’t specify a cause of death.

Cotton was among a small number of women in leadership positions at the Southern Christian Leadership Conference during the civil rights era, and she led the Atlanta-based civil rights group’s Citizenship Education Program.

“She had a beautiful voice, and when things got tense, Dorothy was the one who would start up a song to relieve the tension,” said Xernona Clayton, who was King’s office manager in Atlanta and organized protest marches and fundraisers.

“She had such a calming influence in her personality,” Clayton added. “She had a personality that would lend itself to people listening to her.”

Cotton became one of King’s closest colleagues and worked at the SCLC for more than a decade.

Cotton also commanded respect from her male counterparts within the group, said Bernard Lafayette Jr., a longtime civil rights leader who is now chairman of the SCLC’s national board.

When King and others ventured to parts of the Deep South that had a reputation for violence against blacks, Cotton was fearless, Lafayette recalled in an interview.

“She was very courageous,” Lafayette said. “She never hesitated.”

A key focus of Cotton’s work was voter education, and teaching people how to read ballots, how to vote and the importance of voting, said Edwina Moss of Cleveland, Ohio, who was civil rights leader Andrew Young’s administrative assistant.

“She worked a lot in Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia _ just all over _ everywhere where there was a need,” Moss said. “It was extremely important work; it was probably the core foundation of the organization.”

Cotton remained active in civil rights and education after King’s death, later serving as an administrator at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.

During a commemoration of King’s death in 1993, Cotton said that people need to take responsibility for carrying on the mission of racial equality.

“Rosa Parks didn’t wait to see what everybody else was doing. She just did it,” Cotton said of the woman who inspired the Montgomery, Alabama, bus boycotts by refusing to give her seat to a white man. “We should ask ourselves what we’re doing.

It starts with ourselves, our families and our churches.”

Cotton was born in Goldsboro, North Carolina. She and her three sisters were raised by her father after her mother died

She attended Shaw University in Raleigh before earning a bachelor’s degree in English and library science at Virginia State College in 1955. She earned a master’s degree in speech therapy from Boston University in 1960.

She met King when he preached at the church she attended in Petersburg, Virginia, and was invited shortly thereafter to join the staff at the SCLC. Harrison, who worked with Cotton at Cornell while she served as director of student activities, said a small private burial and larger public memorial were being planned in Ithaca but details hadn’t been finalized.

Black Mamas Are Dying. We Can Stop It.

By Congresswoman Robin Kelly (D-Ill.) Black mothers are dying and it’s time to do something about it. Every year, more than 700 American mothers lose their lives to pregnancy or birth-related complications. Some medical professionals estimate that at least half, if not more, of these deaths are entirely preventable.

While the deaths of 700-plus American mothers should shock us all, the statistics are much worse for African American mothers. We are three-to-four times more likely to die during pregnancy or childbirth than our White counterparts. A 20102011 survey of maternal deaths in Philadelphia found that threequarters of those deaths were Black mothers.

These shocking statistics cut across class, education level, and socio-economic status. Earlier this year, Serena Williams shared her own story of nearly losing her life.

She, like too many other women, was ignored when she raised concerns about her own health and body. If this tragedy can befall a wealthy, world-class athlete who’s deeply in tuned with her own body, it could, and does, happen to anyone.

Sadly, the situation is getting worse, not better. American mothers are dying at higher rates every year.

Globally, we’ve had real success in pushing down the rates of mothers needlessly dying, especially in Africa and the Caribbean.

Yet at the same time, the U.S. is one of a handful of nations where the number of mothers dying is increasing.

We can and must do better. All mamas deserve the chance to be mamas.

That’s why I’ve introduced the “Mothers and Offspring Mortality and Morbidity Awareness Act” or the MOMMA Act, for short. This comprehensive legislation takes a multi-pronged approach to ending maternal mortality through increased access to care, expanded culturally-competent training and standardized data collection.

Currently, one of our greatest challenges in addressing the rising rate of maternal mortality is a lack of good data. We need to standardize data to find trends and protocols that work to save

“We’re not neglecting college students, that’s still an important outreach avenue for us, but we’ve seen, more recently, that it’s also important to start getting in front of these students earlier,” McGowan said. “We start [reaching] them at the elementary, middle and high school levels so that they are aware of the opportunities in [STEM careers] and so that they’re best prepared to take advantage of those opportunities when they get to college.”

Touting the creation of job and business opportunities, McGowan said that his group advocates for expanding access to offshore environments and offshore waters off the coast of North Carolina for energy exploration and production in the Atlantic Ocean.

Earlier this year, The News and Observer reported that, “Supporters and opponents of offshore drilling gathered in Raleigh for the state’s only public hearing on the Trump administration’s controversial plan to open up the Atlantic coast for oil and gas exploration.”

While supporters of offshore drilling in North Carolina said that “the oil and gas industry would create goodpaying, full-time jobs to prospect and later drill for oil and natural gas,” opponents argued that “oil spills would be an ever-present threat to the state’s environment, its tourism and fishing industries, and coastal people’s way of life,” The Observer reported.

The Virginian-Pilot reported that, President Donald Trump’s vision for dramatically expanding offshore exploration for oil and natural gas in the U.S., “calls for the largest auction of offshore leases in U.S. history—a total of 47 sales between 2019 and 2024, compared with 11 that had been scheduled in the 2017-2022 plan ironed out under President Barack Obama.”

The plan also includes three lease sales in the region that include federal waters off Virginia and North Carolina, The Virginian-Pilot reported.

Still, McGowan said that, based on research provided

by API, more than 50,000 jobs would be created by 2035, if offshore drilling and exploration moved forward off the coast of North Carolina.

McGowan continued: “That could be a tremendous opportunity, not only from an employment standpoint, but also from an economic development standpoint, as well.”

The MOMMA Act also establishes and enforces national emergency obstetric protocols and ensures the sharing of best practices between practitioners and hospital systems because, if it’s working, we want every doctor to know about it.

Additionally, the MOMMA Act would expand access to care by ensuring that mothers retain their Medicaid coverage for one year after giving birth, the entire postpartum period. Right now, mothers lose their coverage just two months after giving birth.

However, many women face significant health challenges, often weeks and months, after giving birth. One mom who spoke at my press conference unveiling the bill suffered a childbirthrelated stroke 20 days after giving birth. Furthermore, we know that postpartum depression and other health challenges face new mothers; expanding access to care will ensure that moms remain healthy as they raise their families.

Finally, the MOMMA Act would improve access to culturally-competent care throughout the care continuum. For decades, we’ve known that culturally-incompetent care has had massive and negative impacts on our community and our health.

In 2018, it’s time to train health professionals to give appropriate care to all patients, regardless of their race.

I could not be prouder to have introduced the MOMMA Act or to have worked with the amazing women and men who helped us craft this important legislation to save mothers’ lives.

It’s the product of months of work with families, mothers, doctors, nurses, midwives, doulas and policy advocates. I’m deeply humbled to have the support of Black Women’s Health Imperative, the Black Mamas Matter Alliance, the National Urban League, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and many others.

As a mother, I was lucky enough to experience two happy, healthy pregnancies. I want the same thing for every mother and family: a healthy, happy pregnancy and child.

2018 Draft Preparation for the LA Clippers

By Cameron Buford whatsgoodinsports.com This week’s NBA draft gives hope to all teams, though the previous seasons non-playoff teams are entered into a draft lottery; which has decided the position they will be drafting, in the upcoming NBA Draft. In preparation for the upcoming NBA Draft, the Los Angeles Clippers have invited multiple college basketball players to their facility in recent weeks for individual workouts. As this teams continues to transform themselves after their mid-season blockbuster trade last seasons, the Clippers are looking to find their new face of the franchise.

Prior to the beginning of 2016-2017 season, the Clippers sent Chris Paul to the Houston Rockets. They followed that trade up with another seismic trade the team’s seminal franchise player.

This trade they acquired a first round draft pick, Guard Avery

Bradly, Forward Tobias Harris, and Center Boban Marjanovic when they stunned the NBA by trading Forward Blake Griffin.

The Clippers also sent role players Willie Reed and Brice Johnson to the Detroit Pistons in the Griffin trade.

For the past several seasons, Chris Paul and Blake Griffin were stalwarts in the Clippers lineup. However, durability remained a concern for each of them, though together they eclipsed 51 wins, in 5 consecutive seasons, yet were not ever able to get to a conference championship. Amid the changing NBA and with consultation from NBA Legend Jerry West, the Clippers are in flux. These recent trades have brought the Clippers some flexibility, including the 12th and 13th pick of this 2018 draft.

The Clippers brass have let it be know that they are looking

for long lengthy two-way type players in this year’s upcoming draft. They will also have to replace the heart beat of this team, if it wasn’t Chris Paul it was Blake Griffin… now that both are gone they need that transcendent player to bring them back to contending status in the league. This week is their opportunity to draft that player or trade for that player if they find that guy available.

In preparation for this week’s draft the Los Angeles Clipper have brought in several young draft eligible players for a closure look at them and they’re on court abilities. Michigan State Forward Miles Bridges, UCLA Guard Aaron Holiday, Kentucky Forward Kevin Knox and Texas A&M Robert Williams were among the players that were brought in to potentially lead the

Clippers into the upcoming 2018-2019 NBA season.

Whether it’s actually through this week’s draft or the use of their draft picks, the Clippers are in a good position to really improve their team for this upcoming season. As I see it, they need to team Tobias Harris with a big two-way guard such as Miles Bridges. They have a decision to make with DeAndre Jordan, as he is in the final year of his contract. Do they resign him, do they draft a center… do they pair him with a draft pick for an established post player? Bucks’ Sterling Brown Sues Milwaukee Over Stun-Gun Arrest

Brother of NBA’s Zach Randolph Killed Outside of Indiana Bar

By BRIAN SLODYSKO The Associated Press INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Authorities say Sacramento Kings forward Zach Randolph's brother was shot and killed early Saturday outside of a bar in the Indiana city where the two grew up.

Police said that an officer heard gunfire at around 5 a.m. and found Roger Randolph bleeding between two cars outside of Hop's Blues Room in Marion, which is about 60 miles (97 kilometers) northeast of Indianapolis. They said investigators don't know the circumstances surrounding the shooting, but they don't think it was a random attack.

Roger Randolph, who was 35 years old, had several brushes with the law, including for a 2004 shooting at a nightclub that wounded three people and landed him in prison.

Roger Randolph was sentenced to three years in prison in 2005 for his role in the nightclub shooting in Anderson, which is about 30 miles (48 kilometers) south of Marion and is where court records say he had been living when he was killed. The shooting apparently stemmed from an argument on the dance floor.

Zach Randolph was at the club that night and was questioned, but he wasn't charged.

Roger Randolph was charged last year with OWI, the Indiana equivalent of driving under the influence. There was a hearing last week in that case, which was unresolved.

Zach Randolph led Marion High School to a state championship in 2000 before heading to Michigan State University and then the NBA. In addition to the Kings, he has played for the Portland Trail Blazers, New York Knicks, Los Angeles Clippers and Memphis Grizzlies. He is a two-time NBA

In a statement, Kings General Manager Vlade Divac called Randolph's death “tragic,” adding “our prayers, heartfelt condolences and thoughts are with Zach and his family during this painful and difficult time.”

Roger Randolph was also a gifted basketball player growing up in Marion, but he got into trouble and was kicked off the high school team. His mother sent him to a boarding school in Pennsylvania, according to a 2004 story by The Oregonian .

MOSCOW (AP) — The only black coach at this year’s World Cup says there is a need for more in soccer.

“In European countries, in major clubs, you see lots of African players. Now we need African coaches for our continent to go ahead,” Senegal’s Aliou Cisse said through a translator on Monday, a day ahead of his nation’s World Cup opener against Poland.

The percentage of black players at this year’s tournament and with clubs in the world’s top leagues is far higher.

Cisse was captain of Senegal when it reached the 2002 quarterfinals in the nation’s only previous World Cup appearance.

“I am the only black coach in this World Cup. That is true,” Cisse said. “But really these are debates that disturb me. I think that football is a universal sport and that the color of your skin is of very little importance.”

FIFA did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Cisse cited Florent Ibenge, the coach of Congo’s national team, as a sign of progress.

“I think we have a new generation that is working, that is doing its utmost, and beyond being good players with a past of professional footballers,” Cisse said. “We are very good in our tactics, and we have the right to be part of the top international coaches.”

Africa’s best performance at the World Cup has been to reach the quarterfinals, accomplished by Cameroon in 1990, Senegal in 2002 and Ghana in 2010.

“I have the certainty that one day an African team, an African country, will win the World Cup,” Cisse said. “It’s a bit more complicated in our countries. We have realities that are not there in other continents, but I think that the African continent is full of qualities. We are on the way, and I’m sure that Senegal, Nigeria or other African countries will be able win, just like Brazil, Germany or other European countries.”

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Milwaukee Bucks guard Sterling Brown filed a lawsuit Tuesday against the city of Milwaukee and its police department, claiming unlawful arrest and excessive force when officers used a stun gun on him during his arrest for a parking violation.

Brown’s attorney Mark Thomsen filed the lawsuit in federal court.

Brown had been talking with officers while waiting for a citation for illegally parking in a disabled spot outside a Walgreens on Jan. 26, when officers took him down because he didn’t immediately remove his hands from his pockets as ordered.

Police Chief Alfonso Morales apologized to Brown last month when body-camera video of the arrest was released. Brown wasn’t charged with anything and three officers were disciplined, with suspensions ranging from two to 15 days.

Eight other officers were ordered to undergo remedial training in professional communications.

Video of the confrontation shows an officer approached Brown around 2 a.m. When their conversation becomes tense, the officer calls more squad cars for help and eventually eight officers are standing around Brown. One asks him to take his hands out of his pockets and a second or two later the scuffle begins. Almost immediately, an officer yells: “Taser! Taser! Taser!”

According to the lawsuit, one of the officers later took to Twitter to mock Brown, saying, “Nice meeting Sterling Brown of the Milwaukee Bucks at work this morning! Lol#FearTheDeer Police only released the body camera video of the first officer who contacted Brown. But additional body camera and squad car videos, obtained by WISN-TV, showed the moments after officers used a stun gun on Brown. In one, Brown is on the ground and handcuffed when an officer puts one of his boots on Brown’s ankle, holding it there. Brown doesn’t mention being in any discomfort but he questions the officer’s actions.

Coley President, Cal Poly Pomona As I was reflecting on the importance of CSU’s Super Sunday, what came to mind was an experience I had meeting an African American great-grandmother who introduced me to her 8-year-old great-grandson that she and her husband were raising. She had heard my message about the

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ The first black female member of the General Assembly is being nominated to the Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame.

The late Margaret E. Morton was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1972. She served four terms, representing Bridgeport. She later won a Democratic primary against an incumbent senator and then went on to win the general election after a lengthy court battle with Bridgeport Democrats.

She served six terms in the Senate, eventually becoming deputy president pro tempore in 1990. She retired in 1992 and died in 2012.

Four current black women legislators nominated Morton to the hall of fame, citing her “quiet determination” to fight prejudice and racism.

Nominations for the hall of fame are accepted on an ongoing basis and reviewed by a consulting scholars committee.

California Mayors Seek $1.5 Billion to Help Homeless

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) _ Mayors from California’s eleven largest cities on Wednesday asked state lawmakers to provide $1.5 billion to help with what they say is a growing homeless crisis.

They are backing legislation that would require the cities to provide matching funds, creating a $3 billion pot of money to be spent on affordable housing, temporary shelters, supportive services and outreach.

They said in an earlier letter to legislative leaders that lawmakers should use a quarter of the state’s $6.1 billion budget surplus to help the homeless.

San Diego Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer called it “the most pressing issue facing California cities today.’’

The mayors cited a 2017 federal estimate that the most populous state now has more than 134,000 homeless people.

Their request came the same day that two Democratic state senators announced they will seek $2 billion for affordable housing, also in response to the mayors’ requests.

The bipartisan group includes mayors from Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, San Francisco, Fresno, Long Beach, Sacramento, Oakland, Bakersfield, Anaheim and Santa Ana. The proposals come less than six months after Gov. Jerry Brown signed 15 housing bills into law. They imposed a new $75 real estate transaction fee and placed a $4 billion housing bond on the November ballot.

First Black Female Nominated to State Hall of Fame HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ The first black female

member of the General Assembly is being nominated to the Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame.

The late Margaret E. Morton was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1972. She served four terms, representing Bridgeport. She later won a Democratic primary against an incumbent senator and then went on to win the general election after a lengthy court battle with Bridgeport Democrats.

She served six terms in the Senate, eventually becoming deputy president pro tempore in 1990. She retired in 1992 and died in 2012.

Four current black women legislators nominated Morton to the hall of fame, citing her “quiet determination” to fight prejudice and racism.

Nominations for the hall of fame are accepted on an ongoing basis and reviewed by a consulting scholars committee.

California Mayors Seek $1.5 Billion to Help Homeless

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) _ Mayors from California’s eleven largest cities on Wednesday asked state lawmakers to provide $1.5 billion to help with what they say is a growing homeless crisis.

They are backing legislation that would require the cities to provide matching funds, creating a $3 billion pot of money to be spent on affordable housing, temporary shelters, supportive services and outreach.

They said in an earlier letter to legislative leaders that lawmakers should use a quarter of the state’s $6.1 billion budget surplus to help the homeless.

San Diego Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer called it “the most pressing issue facing California cities today.’’

The mayors cited a 2017 federal estimate that the most populous state now has more than 134,000 homeless people.

Their request came the same day that two Democratic state senators announced they will seek $2 billion for affordable housing, also in response to the mayors’ requests.

The bipartisan group includes mayors from Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, San Francisco, Fresno, Long Beach, Sacramento, Oakland, Bakersfield, Anaheim and Santa Ana. The proposals come less than six months after Gov. Jerry Brown signed 15 housing bills into law. They imposed a new $75 real estate transaction fee and placed a $4 billion housing bond on the November ballot.

Texas Woman Defecates in Pants to Hide Drugs CORSICANA, Texas (AP) _ Police say a Texas woman attempted to hide evidence during an arrest by defecating in her pants and using the feces to conceal drugs.

Officers in Corsicana, about 55 miles (88 kilometers ) south of Dallas, were investigating a report of a theft at a grocery store on Wednesday when they attempted to subdue a female suspect and take her into custody. Police say they placed Shannen Martin in the back of a police cruiser where they say she intentionally defecated in her pants then hid a crack pipe, 2.3 grams of crack cocaine and a Valentine’s Day card in her excrement.

Officers had to sift through the woman’s feces to retrieve the evidence after Martin was booked on charges of tampering with evidence and possession of a controlled substance.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom Is Pure, Sci-Fi Movie Magic

By Dwight Brown NNPA News Wire Film Critic Lions and tigers and bears, oh my. Tyrannosaurus, velociraptors and brachiosaurus—run for your lives. The cloned dinosaurs from the theme park Jurassic World are in trouble on the volcanic isle of Isla Nublar, which is erupting, spewing hot lava and emitting a deadly ash cloud. If they aren’t rescued, they will die. That’s the premise in this sequel to “Jurassic World” ($1.7B at the box office). The question is this: Will this followup to the wildly successful “Jurassic World” be enough to hook action/adventure/sci-fi fans and reel them into the theaters?

Colin Trevorrow, the director of Jurassic World, passes on direction duties to Spanish filmmaker J.A. Bayona (“Orphanage,” “The Impossible”), and the difference in style is negligible.

Trevorrow writes the script with Derek Connolly (“Jurassic World,” “Kong: Skull Island”). Editor Bernat Vilaplana worked with Bayona on “The Impossible,” as did cinematographer Oscar Faura. Composer Michael Giacchino won an Oscar for his original score for the animated feature “Up”. Add in creature sculptor Wayne Anderson (“Underworld: Blood Wars”) and it’s no wonder that the footage rips along at a breakneck pace, with

wondrous views of a paradise island being ravaged by 700-degree orange liquid rock and ancient beast clones running rampant.

Everything is neatly coordinated—right down to the last scream for help.

Three years have passed. Isla Nublar, an isle 120 miles west of Costa Rica that housed the now abandoned reptile theme park, is desolate except for lush green vegetation and gigantic beasts.

The Dinosaur Protection Group, run by former theme park manager Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard, “Jurassic World,” “The Help”), is out to save the gigantic animals. They aren’t as aggressive as PETA, but they’re dedicated.

Claire is approached by the duplicitous Eli Mills (“Rafe Spall,”” Life of Pi,” “The Big Short”), who has a plan to relocate the behemoths to a sanctuary, but not out of the kindness of his heart. Dearing is pulled into the mission. She enlists her ex-boyfriend Owen (Chris Platt), who trained some of the less hostile and very intelligent velociraptors. A techy/hacker, Franklin Webb (“Justice Smith,” “The Get Down”), and an equally young paleo/veterinarian, Zia Rodriguez (Danielle Pineda, TV’s “The Detour”), become part of the A-team. Of course, nothing goes as planned.

The simple premise hovers around animal rescue. Working within that blueprint, the film moves quickly to add in a chain of action scenes, daring escapes, fist fights, dinosaur wrestling matches and some graphic violence (a man gets torn apart, so be wary of bringing really young kids to this movie) as it builds into several crescendos. Just as you think there can’t possibly be more mayhem or another challenge, there is; not ad nauseum, but it’s

enough to make you shell-shocked.

The bad guys want to use the behemoths for an evil purpose that involves weapons of destruction. All of the subterfuge, angst and cause célèbre animal rights activism is a ploy to whip the audience’s emotions into a frenzy. On some levels it works. But most astute viewers will understand that there is no moral theme of any consequence in this reptiles gone wild orgy.

The relationship between Claire and Owen is fun, until they do stupid things like kissing in the middle of an action scene.

The two leads have charisma and you like them regardless. Spall as Mills gives you a fitting antagonist to hate, and you hope he gets his just rewards. Ditto for Toby Jones who plays Mr. Eversol, a trafficker, and Ted Levine, as Ken Wheatley, the vile man who heads the rescue and misleads Claire. Smith provides some comic relief as Webb the nerd who hates to get his feet dirty. And, Pineada shows spunk as the brainy and fearless Rodriguez.

It’s obvious the dinosaurs aren’t real, but thanks to the special effects and photography, with a gigantic assist from the sound effects department (Marti Albert sound effects editor), your nerves will get frayed. You’ll jump out of your seat or sit with dread as you watch gnashing teeth bear down on human flesh. Also, a shout out to the vivid images of the volcano and the gorgeous shots of the island which perfectly set up the atmosphere for a verdant paradise gone wrong.

The 128 minutes roll by and you’ll feel like you just got back from a tour of duty in the war-torn jungles of some tropical island nation. Your adrenalin will be high. Your thoughts will race. You will not feel like you just watched the most innovative action/ adventure/sci-fi film in the world (“Avatar”), but you’ll have to admit that “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” worked its magic in its own way, even if its aura doesn’t have a long-lasting effect.

The private event hosted by TVONE, attracted an array of VIPs and Hollywood celebrities who stepped out on the red carpet in stellar style to attend the private screening.

Grammy Award Winning Gospel Artist, Erica Campbell, of the famed gospel sister-duo Mary, Mary, along with producersong-writer husband, Warryn Campbell will star in the 9-episode TV original Docu- Series.

“We’re The Campbells” produced for TVONE by Entertainment One(eOne), is set to air Tuesday June 19, 2018 8/7 C on TVONE and will also include the couple’s three children, Krista, Warryn III (Wozy) and Zaya Campbell.

The family-friendly reality show will give its viewers an open

door into the chaotic schedules of Warryn and Erica Campbell as they juggle multiple careers, maintain a healthy marriage, build a ministry, and raise a wholesome well-balanced family in the midst of it all.

“We didn’t want to do the same old kind of show; the artist; the awards; etc., we wanted to do more- show our other side”, Warryn said.

The 45-minute showing of the first episode appeared to amuse the audience as they erupted in laughter throughout the screening.

The 5-hour event concluded with a Q & A session as the entire cast and creative team of “We’re The Campbells” answered questions from the audience of approximately 200.

When asked, why another reality show? Warryn replied, “I didn’t see myself represented… people of faith.”

Warryn and Erica Campbell have been married for 17 years.

By Dr. Elizabeth V. Primas Program Manager for NNPA ESSA Public Awareness Campaign The National Family Engagement Summit of 2018 was held in Richmond, Va. Throughout the summit, multiple opportunities were provided for attendees to interact with some of the nation’s leading experts in parent and family engagement.

Participants came from near and far. Over 300 teachers, parents, administrators, and community activists participated, presented, networked, taught and learned strategies to increase family engagement. One presenter described the difference between involvement and engagement as the level of commitment, stating, “It’s like you’ve got a ring on it! You’re not just passively attending a few parent-teacher meetings, but you’re planning, making decisions, running for the school board and more.”

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), speaks specifically to parent and family engagement. Data highlighted examples of the successful impact parents can have when they are present in their child’s school. One presenter pointed out that, “Parents tend to be extremely involved with students in the early elementary grades. They bring them to school, speak with the teacher frequently, and are more likely to volunteer for field trips, classroom activities, and attend parent-teacher meetings.”

However, around the third grade, parents start to reduce their involvement. They attend fewer meetings, volunteer for field-trips and other events less, and seldom spend time in the building. In some cases, they may have only met the teacher just once.

When students reach third grade and began to socialize more independently with friends, parent engagement often wanes. It’s

not surprising that after requiring almost, constant supervision that parents breathe a sigh of relief when their children gain newfound independence. However, these are the times when our children require increased attention, specifically our young Black males. There is significant data to show a correlation between K-12 completion, literacy, and adulthood incarceration. The NAACP reported that African Americans are incarcerated at more than five times the rate of Whites and, nationwide, African American children represent 32 percent of children who are arrested. Blacks make up just 13 percent of the U.S. population. Patterns, such as, absenteeism, delinquent behavior, and academic apathy, correlate with high suspension rates and subsequent incarceration.

ESSA places increased priority on parental engagement and requires states to provide innovative strategies to incorporate parental and family engagement into a school’s decision-making, and planning. ESSA stresses two-way communication. This requires teachers, and administrators to reach out to parents in clear, concise, relatable ways that encourage feed-back and input at every level of implementation. Some non-traditional communication strategies include social media use, e-newsletters, and short surveys. Administrators and teachers are encouraged to schedule meetings that accommodate parents with different hours of availability.

ESSA does not dictate the ways in which schools are required to engage parents. However, educators should recognize the crucial role parental partnerships play in preparing students for college and careers.

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Maxine Waters (CA-43), Ranking Member of the House Financial Services Committee, offered amendments to two bills, H.R. 5797 and H.R. 6, which are aimed at addressing the opioid epidemic.

Rep. Waters’ amendments would expand access to Medicaid for the treatment of all substance abuse disorders – rather than only the treatment of opioid abuse -- and would direct the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to develop a comprehensive and evidence-based plan for the treatment of all substance abuse disorders.

“For far too long, many communities throughout the United States have been devastated by substance abuse. However, despite the widespread suffering that millions of people – particularly African Americans during the crack cocaine epidemic – endured and still endure today, our federal, state, and local governments, in many instances, have pursued punitive measures in lieu of compassionate, common-sense, and comprehensive substance abuse disorder treatment. As the U.S. Congress debates a number of proposals that are narrowly focused on addressing the opioid epidemic, I believe it is imperative that we examine and confront the full range of substance abuse disorders in this country – including alcohol, cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamines – in order to ensure that all communities can adequately heal from the impacts of addiction. I am proud to have offered three amendments that will conduct the research required for the development of a concrete, evidence-based plan to address all types of substance abuse disorders, and in the interim, will provide the resources needed to meet the health and rehabilitative care needs of individuals suffering from these devastating disorders,” said Congresswoman Maxine Waters.

Appropriate and Responsible in its Execution Act: • An Amendment to Treat All Substance Abuse Disorders: The amendment expands the option for states to use Medicaid funds for treatment in Institutions for Mental Disease (IMDs) to include treatment for all types of substance abuse disorders, rather than only treatment for opioid abuse disorders.

• An Amendment to Promote Medicaid Expansion: The amendment requires states to expand Medicaid pursuant to the Affordable Care Act as a condition for using Medicaid funds to treat people with opioid abuse disorders in an IMD facility.

Expanding access to Medicaid will benefit patients with substance abuse disorders, regardless of the type of addiction from which they suffer and ensure that treatment services are not limited to patients with opioid abuse disorders. It will also ensure that treatment options are not restricted to inpatient treatment in an IMD-style institution, but are also available in the form of outpatient services in the local community.

Congresswoman Waters’ third amendment was made to H.R. 6 – SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act: • Survey on Unmet Substance Abuse Treatment Needs: The amendment would direct the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to conduct a nationwide survey of the organizations, government agencies, and other entities that provide substance use disorder treatment services. Furthermore, based on the results of that survey, the amendment directs HHS to develop, and submit to Congress, a plan to direct appropriate resources to address the inadequacies in services or funding identified through the survey. This survey is intended to complement the existing efforts of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to examine those services in order to develop a concrete plan to address unmet needs in treatment services nationwide.
