Harris joined Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) and Cory Booker (D-N.J.), who have also publicly announced that they would not accept corporate PAC money.

The Citizens United decision handed down by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2010 created a situation where seemingly endless amounts of money can flow into the political system.

“I think that money has had such an outsized influence on politics,” Sen. Harris said on The Breakfast Club. “We’re all supposed to have an equal vote, but money has now really tipped the balance between an individual having equal power in an election to a corporation. So, I’ve actually made a decision since I had that conversation that I’m not going to accept corporate PAC checks.”

Harris, who has been thought of as a possible presidential candidate in 2020 ,but has not said she is running, said that a recent exchange at a town hall influenced her decision not to take corporate PAC checks.

“I was asked that question and I wasn’t expecting the question. And I thought about it afterwards. Cosby Could Spend Rest of His Life in Prison

Written by Michael Sisak and Claudia Lauer The Associated Press After decades of whispers, lawsuits, investigations and close calls, Bill Cosby could be headed to prison at age 80 for sexual assault for the rest of his life, vindicating a multitude of women who doubted anyone would ever believe their word against that of America’s Dad. The comedian was convicted Thursday of drugging and molesting Temple University employee Andrea Constand at his Montgomery County mansion in January 2004. Women’s advocates called the verdict a turning point in the #MeToo movement that proved what Cosby’s accusers had been saying all along: his nice-guy image was a sham.

Lili Bernard, who said Cosby sexually assaulted her before giving her a one-time role on “The Cosby Show” in 1992, became so emotional in the courtroom gallery that she accidentally banged her forehead on the bench in front of her.

“I’m overcome with gratitude,” Bernard, sobbing, said outside the courthouse. “I feel like I have to pinch myself. Am I awake? It’s a miracle.”

The verdict, in the first big celebrity trial of the #MeToo era, sealed the spectacular late-in-life downfall of an entertainer who broke racial barriers in Hollywood on his way to TV superstardom as sweater-wearing, wisdom-dispensing Dr. Cliff Huxtable.

It was the only criminal case to arise from a barrage of allegations from more than 60 women who said Cosby drugged and molested them over five decades but whose stories were often disbelieved or ignored years before #MeToo put a spotlight on sexual misconduct by powerful men.

Panasonic to Pay $280M to Settle Corruption Probe

LAKE FOREST, Calif. (AP) - Panasonic Corp. will pay about $280 million to resolve federal charges that executives at its in-flight entertainment unit improperly hid payments to consultants overseas. Federal prosecutors announced Monday that Panasonic will pay $143 million to the Securities and Exchange Commission. Meanwhile its Southern California subsidiary, Panasonic Avionics, will pay $137 million in penalties to the U.S. Justice Department. Email and phone messages seeking comment from Panasonic were not immediately returned.

Government officials say the investigation concerned payments to consultants in Asia, at least one of which did little or no work. The company is accused of concealing payments to third-party sales agents, in violation of the accounting provisions of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. Officials say those payments were improperly recorded in Panasonic’s regulatory filings.

Chicago Police Gang Database Criticized for Inaccuracies

CHICAGO (AP) _ The Chicago Police Department plans to make changes to its gang member database following criticism that it’s often inaccurate, outdated and racially skewed.

The Chicago Tribune obtained police records through a Freedom of Information Act request that shows the database features 128,000 names, not including juveniles.

Chicago Inspector General Joseph Ferguson has held three public hearings regarding the database as part of an audit into how police gather data on gang members. The state Senate Public Health Committee has also heard from advocates seeking the elimination of the database. “We don’t know how it operates,” Rachel Murphy, staff attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois, said at a recent hearing. “We are really concerned about transparency.”

Officers are instructed to document the known gang affiliation of those they arrest or stop in the street. Distinctive tattoos, information from informants and admissions from those arrested or stopped can lead to the designation. The criteria are too broad and the database would be more useful if it was limited to listing individuals who commit gang-related crimes, critics said. The list also seems to unfairly target African-Americans and Hispanics, who account for 95 percent of the database. People aren’t notified if they’re added to the list and can’t dispute their inclusion, critics said. Much of the information is also decades old.

The database is shared with other law enforcement agencies and could potentially lead to larger bail amounts or heftier sentences. The department plans to make changes to how people are added to the database and create “explicit parameters,” said Anthony Guglielmi, a police spokesman. Those added to the list will now be notified and allowed to appeal the designation, he said. The data will no longer be shared with law enforcement agencies directly, though they will still have access to Chicago police arrest data.

Wells Fargo Commitment to Black Homebuyers

By Stacy M. Brown The Washington Informer/NNPA Member In 2017, Wells Fargo announced a commitment to create 250,000 African American homeowners by 2027.

In addition to lending $60 billion for home purchases over that 10-year period, the banking giant has committed to increase the diversity of its sales team, particularly African American home mortgage consultants.

Further, bank officials said they’ve dedicated $15 million for initiatives focused on homebuyer education and counseling for Black families.

This commitment is only part of the evidence that Wells Fargo has made over the past year to show that it values customers of color, said Cerita Battles, the senior vice president and head of retail diverse segments at Wells Fargo Home Mortgage.

“It is really important to understand that, as we made our intentions public, we did so with some of the country’s largest and most influential African American organizations standing by our side,” she said, noting that those organizations included the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB), the National Urban League (NUL) and the NAACP. “Their support not only added a measure of accountability and a great deal of legitimacy to this commitment, but also the power and scope of their collective constituent networks,” Battles said.

NAREB and affiliates of NUL currently are engaged in homebuyer education and counseling to help African Americans prepare for homeownership while the NAACP’s Economic Development arm assists constituents with financial preparedness, which is a key component to being ready to purchase a home, she said.

“And, our commitment aligns very well with NAREB’s ‘2 million in 5 years’ initiative which is aimed at creating 2 million new African American homeowners in five years,” Battles said.

The commitment appears headed in a positive direction.

year and 99.7 percent of the bank’s first-year goal despite a falling mortgage market, Battles said.

The bank also dedicated more than $1.8 million in grants to support homebuyer education and counseling for African American audiences, exceeding its first-year goal.

Battles said the majority of support from that work comes primarily from three areas of the Wells Fargo Housing Foundation, including the National Housing Grant Program, the Homeownership Counseling Grant Program, and down payment assistance grants through NeighborhoodLIFT. “We are also supporting new initiatives like HomeFree-USA’s Center for Financial Advancement Program which will offer financial education and expose students to the mortgage industry as a career option on the campuses of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs),” Battles said. “And, the future holds great promise as we have several improvements that have been put in place for 2018 including doubling the amount of money dedicated to NeighborhoodLIFT.” Battles said that Wells Fargo also plans to pilot new pricing models for home mortgages under $175,000 and to launch a national housing counseling program that the company can share across the entire mortgage industry.

The company’s homeownership commitment to African Americans has allowed them to also look inward.

“There is no doubt the mortgage industry lacks diversity, especially when it comes to the sales force. So, for us, one of the important pieces to this puzzle is to begin building a pipeline of new, young, energetic, bright minds who might not normally consider mortgage lending as a career choice,” Battles said. “We hope to achieve this through partnerships with organizations that can help get the word out to young African Americans as they grow and shape their thoughts and plans about the future.”

For instance, Wells Fargo is partnering with the National Association of Minority Mortgage Bankers of America which has built connections to HBCUs. Battles said that those connections were great conduits for Wells Fargo to provide information either with materials or by showing up in person for events.

Comparably, HomeFree-USA’s Center for Financial Advancement Symposium is just beginning a program that Wells Fargo is supporting that works with similar intent.

“In fact, I recently had an opportunity to speak at their first event at Fisk University, a historically Black university located in Nashville, Tennessee,” Battles said, noting that she was counted among the 10 Black women executives from the mortgage industry who had the opportunity to speak from the heart about their personal and professional journeys.

“We described the attributes needed to be successful in life in front of 31 young women and faculty members,” Battles said.

“We know that we can’t just depend on the coming workforce of the future. We also do our best to add seasoned veterans to our sales force. And this is really foundational; we leverage our relationships with realtors, builders and nonprofits to ensure that folks who are already in the market know that Wells Fargo is not only a viable option, but also has a program going that focuses on African American borrowers and their communities.”

The approach is two-pronged, Battles continued.

“We are engaging and attracting current experts while inspiring new generations to consider [the mortgage industry] as a career possibility for their future,” Battles said.

Federal Ad Spending in Black Newspapers

By Stacy M. Brown NNPA Newswire Contributor A long-awaited report that details what federal agencies spend on advertising in African American-owned newspapers is finally near completion, according to officials in the General Accounting Office (GAO).

The report comes as the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), a trade organization made up of more than 200 Black-owned media companies, that reach more than 20 million people each week, celebrates 191 years of the Black Press.

It also comes ahead of critical midterm election season in which the NNPA announced a historic voter registration drive that has a goal of registering 5 million new, Black voters.

“We now have July as the projected completion and issuance time frame for the report,” said Charles Young, the managing director of public affairs for the GAO, which acts as the authoritative audit unit for the federal government.

Democratic D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton has been at the forefront of a multi-year effort pushing for a new report. CBC members and others have since joined her call.

“The Black Press allow us to reach people who need to hear the real story and the power of the African American print press is validation and people appreciate the real story,” said CBC Chairman Cedric Richmond (D-La.). “When you advertise in the Black Press, you get a sense of credibility.”

The federal government serves as the largest advertiser in the country and a 2007 GAO report on advertising spending revealed that just five percent of the $4.3 billion available for advertising campaigns went to minority-owned businesses.

Five agencies—the Department of Defense, Department of the Treasury, the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of the Interior, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration —were singled out in the 2007 report, the most recent audit available.

“It’s important that news outlets and media companies owned or published by individuals of color, with a primary mission to serve communities of color, have the same opportunities

as other media outlets—especially as African Americans and Hispanic Americans continue to grow in number in the United States,” Norton said. “We believe that this request for a new report is particularly timely, because GAO will be conducting an audit of spending by federal agencies on public relations and advertising.”

In a historic announcement during NNPA’s Black Press Week in Washington, D.C., NNPA President and CEO Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr., said the organization and several others, including Rainbow Push, National Action Network, the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education, the National Association of Real Estate Brokers, the NAACP, the National Urban League, CBC, and the AME Church had partnered for an unprecedented voter registration drive.

Chavis called the drive a coordinated effort to combat hate and dissention and to spread love and unity.

“Come November, we’re going to have the largest Black voter turnout in American history. This is a payback year,” Chavis said. “The most important election of our lifetime will be the 2018 midterm elections.”

It’s become apparent for those who tabulate votes and for those who analyze elections, that the Black vote can be the defining factor, said NNPA Chair Dorothy R. Leavell.

“The Black vote can determine who wins and who loses and it’s important that people don’t take the Black vote for granted,” Leavell said.

She said it was crucial that the GAO issue a new report so that it’s apparent which agencies are giving Black-owned newspapers a fair share in advertising spending.

Young acknowledged that the report has taken quite some time—Norton and a host of U.S. Congress and Senate members formally called for the audit in March 2016.

“Things can sometimes take longer than planned,” Young said. “But [July] is the expectation.”

1st Black Female CEO of the NBA Honored

Harvey California Black Media SACRAMENTO, Calif. — While residing in the Easter Hill Village public-housing project in Richmond, Calif., during her younger days, Cynthia Marshall’s mother put two books in her hands — a publication of mathematics and the Bible to guide her through her life’s journey to success.

For a young person living less than 18 miles east of San Francisco, those two books became the important focal point of Marshall’s life and career in telecommunications. They lifted her out of despair and a constant element of crime.

Now that she is the Chief Executive Officer of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks, the professional sports team is discovering how the books still play an integral role in the task she has acquired.

Marshall is an effective problem solver and has a strong Christian faith.

“She put those two books in my hands at an early age and said, ‘If you keep your head in these books they will get you out of poverty,’” Marshall said of the advice given by her mother. “That’s what I did. When people ask me what is the secret to your success, I tell them it’s those two books. I kept my head and eyes in both of them because that is what I was told to do.”

Today, Marshall, who retired from AT&T as its senior vice president of Human Resources and chief Diversity Officer, is not only the first Black female CEO of an NBA franchise, she is the first woman ever to hold the position.

At a time when the “Me Too” movement has rapidly picked up the pace, Marshall was specifically brought in to address and subdue an alleged culture of sexual violations against women within the Mavericks’ organization.

The Mavericks’ owner, Mark Cuban, announced that there would be in-house investigations, and then introduced Marshall as the interim CEO who would lead the independent review as well as provide solutions to ensure women work in a respectful environment. “The CEO interim tag has since been removed,” Marshall said.

Cuban’s decision to introduce Marshall into the corporate world of sports also brings hope to other African Americans and women who would like to follow her path.

tunities, it means somebody like Mark Cuban saw the value and didn’t care if I was a man, woman, Black, White, or Asian. He didn’t care,” Marshall said. “He wanted somebody equipped to do a job and it just so happens he called upon a Black woman to do it. He made the call. It says a lot about our society. Hopefully, we’ll have more people like him that will follow suit and get beyond gender and race.”

2018 NFL Draft Recap

By Cameron Buford Contributing Sports Writer Each year the NFL Draft becomes more and more of a spectacle, this year’s draft held in Arlington, TX. was no different.

As it brings excitement and opportunities for teams and players alike. This article will recap the top picks of this draft along with a few other highlights from this weekend’s past draft.

Bookended by teams picking Heisman Trophy winners in this year’s draft fans saw teams focus on needs versus talent in several instances. The Seahawks drafting Rashaad Penny, Running Back from San Diego St. is one example and the Miami Dolphins drafting Minkah Fitzpatrick, Safety from Alabama, is another. As usual some teams traded up to get the guy they want to lead their team in years to come.

Cleveland Browns- though it wasn’t a surprise when the pick was made, Drafting was Baker Mayfield with #1 overall pick was certainly shocking to most! They get an in your face competitor that will get a chance to develop into a true leader or the Browns for years to come. Time will tell if Mayfield is able to change the arc of a team that went winless in 2017.

New York Giants- the Browns made this an easy pick, considering they haven’t had a decent running threat since the days of O.J Anderson. As expected Sequon Barkley is a “no brainer” for the Giants! A running back that runs hard, can catch out the backfield, can block immediately brings much needed balance to their offense.

New York Jets- Having traded up to get this pick, they draft Sam Darnold with this pick. Though the Jets do have a few quarterbacks on their roster, it’s not likely that Sam will set very long.

Cleveland Browns- being that the prize running back was selected by the Giants, the browns added a top rated defensive back out of Ohio State Denzel Ward to their secondary. Having lost their best cornerback of the past several years, this was another pick based on need.

Denver Broncos- falling right into their lap was the best pass rusher of the draft. By picking Bradley Chubb the Broncos are looking to replace the Pro Bowler Defensive End they lost a few years ago.

Indianapolis Colts- though these Colts have many other needs, it is imperative that they draft some offensive line help to keep their QB upright. Their franchise QB will be very happy with the pick of Norte Dame Guard Quinton Nelson.

Buffalo Bill- Trading up to draft the player you want is a bold move, especially if there’s any kind of baggage. By drafting Josh Allen, the Bills get just that. Though they are banking on this big, strong arm quarterback to thrive when given the opportunity.

Chicago Bears- it’s been a few years since the Bears have had that defensive playmaker of note, Roquan Jones has a chance to be that guy. The athletic and quick linebacker will be a difference maker on the field.

San Francisco 49ers- though many other though drafting a

nation. She earned every position she attained since graduating from the University of California, Berkeley, where she was the first Black cheerleader on the campus and earned degrees in Business Administration and Human Resources Management.

Marshall started at AT&T in 1981, holding positions in operations, human resources, networking, engineering, planning, and regulatory and external affairs. She was named senior vice president of Human Resources in 2012, and then was appointed Chief Diversity Officer as a dual role in 2015. Black Enterprise listed Marshall as one of the Top 50 Most Powerful Women in corporate America the same year. She retired from AT&T in 2017 to start her own consulting firm.

Marshall was honored on the California Senate and Assembly floors at the State Capitol on April 19, 2018 in Sacramento, a place where she spent time advocating “good public policy” for AT&T, she said.

Loretta Walker, who worked alongside Marshall at AT&T before retiring as vice president of Employment Engagement Communication, said the Mavericks’ hiring of Marshall “makes sense.”

“From the standpoint of looking at an established institution in AT&T that has gotten a lot of recognition for diversity, they (the Mavericks) have gained a lot by allowing her to bring in her expertise,” Walker said. “I know I’ve been blessed. I know I’ve never experienced anything like (sexual harassment) in my lifetime working for a company like At&T.” Cynthia Marshall extended the interview with California Black Media to touch on her duties and vision as an executive for the Dallas Mavericks.

CBM: “After you took the CEO position for the Mavericks, you said that the ‘system failed’ under the previous leadership.

What parameters have you put in place and have you made any progress?”

Marshall: “Yes, we have made progress. We put together a 100-day plan and we had to start with telling people that we are about zero tolerance. We put together a ‘respect-in-the-workplace’ training, harassment training, updated our code of conduct, and I started sitting down with the employees one by one. One of the first things that I did was roll out a set of values and hashtags. The hashtags are #RespectAtWork and #PerfectOurCRAFTS. The C.R.A.F.T.S. are our values — character, respect, authenticity, fairness, teamwork, and safety. When I say safety, it’s physical and emotional safety.”

“Those are the things we are trying to model in the workplace. And of course, we’re rolling out new policies, and we have brought in a new senior vice president of human resources, who

is also a Black woman. We added a new position, a compliance officer, who can focus on investigations, misconducts, and setting the right tone.”

“Our leadership team has gone from no women to at least five women and three people of color. We’re making progress and that matters only because diversity matters. All the research says you make better decisions when you have a diverse group at the table.”

CBM: “You said that you first declined the offer to work for the Mavericks. But then changed your mind after talking to a couple people within the organization. What changed?”

Marshall: “First of all, they were asking ‘are you the new woman who is our new boss and Mark Cuban’s new boss?’ I was like wow, for him to tell people that he’s already excited about me coming in. The smart man that he is, obviously, he already did his homework and felt that I could help with this issue. Then they told me that this was not a workplace that’s really inclusive of women the way it should be. We were addressing everything, including pay disparities, which I am happy that we don’t have a big gender disparity around pay. Some things were done right, but clearly, some things were not done right. So we’re changing that culture. Those women said, ‘We need you. We absolutely need you. This place needs to focus more on women.’ We’re doing that.”

CBM: “Do you know that what you are doing could be a blueprint for the NBA, the entire league itself? How do you feel about that?”

Marshall: “Exactly. When NBA Commissioner Adam Silver called me to welcome me to the NBA, and he was so welcoming, to have him call me and send me a huge message that the whole league is watching and dedicated to getting this right, yes, hopefully, we can lay out a blueprint. So, if any other organization has an issue we can lay out the template on how to address it.”

CBM: “This is a great opportunity for you. Do you know what this could do for your career and others who want to follow your path from where you started to where you are now?”

Marshall: “You know, I worked for AT&T for 36 years. So now I am committed to this. But my ultimate dream is to lead a small college. Whether it be a rural college, Christian college or historic Black college. I want to lead an institution that needs a lot of help, where I can call upon all my friends to help for free, and that we can give those students a good education for free. That’s my vision. Those are the kind of calls that I want to get.”

Arizona Cardinals- in desperate need of a quarterback the Cardinals traded up to draft Josh Rosen, UCLA, with hopes he can stay hungry and humble enough to be their franchise for years to come.

Miami Dolphins- the though the Dolphins couldn’t get a quality QB to push their current underachieving quarterback, they were able to add a big play defender to their team. Alabama Safety Minkah Fitzpatrick should be a great addition to this defense.

Maybe the best fit picked in the draft may have been Calvin Ridley being drafted by the Atlanta Falcons. We also saw brothers, Tremaine and Terrell Edmunds, be picked in the same draft for the first time ever. The Seahawks draft of one handed Outside Linebacker Shaquem Griffin out of Central Florida get the most inspirational pick of the draft.

Just as excited as fans were to see who their teams selected, we will all be just as excited to see how these draft picks play out on the field. CIS creates school-based strategies for improving the academic outcomes of students by addressing their basic needs. This work centers on helping school leaders understand the needs of their school populations apart from over-simplified ethnic and income categories.

As a former high school dropout, Dr. Tyler used the motivation from the birth of her first son (she said she didn’t want her son to “have a dropout as a mom.”) to propel her to the highest levels of academia, as an education psychologist. While studying for her dissertation, she happened upon a report detailing circumstances that contribute to student dropouts, as well as preventative practices that retain enrollment. She uses her experiences as a former beneficiary of many of the services she now provides to inform her role as chief Advocate.

“Having the benefit of people, over the course of my return to school, who not only encouraged me to continue my education, but helped in many ways, I now have the opportunity to pay it forward every day,” Dr. Tyler said, speaking of her daily motivation to make a difference.

Dr. Tyler said that her primary responsibility is to shepherd the vision and mission of the organization: to provide children with the resources and support they need to not only graduate, but to lead a successful life. Communities in Schools operates in South Nevada, encompassing 50 schools in the Las Vegas metropolitan area, Marshall County, and Elko County. An impressive 66,720 K-12 students benefit from the integrated services provided by CIS, yet the need still outweighs access to resources.

Dr. Tyler believes in the power of the work, but also in the power of action. In order to really move the needle on reducing dropout rates she believes we need everyone at the table; not only to discuss the challenges faced, but to also develop a course of action for moving forward. Dr. Tyler is consistently looking to partner with stakeholders and other like-minded organizations to bring more assets to schools. She serves as the co-chair of the Juvenile Justice Services Citizens Advisory Committee in Clark County and maintains board memberships on a number of orga-

nizations in the community.

The Every Student Succeeds Act, memorializes integrated support services as a successful practice and allows federal use of resources to be leveraged to provide more resources to communities. For the first time in federal education policy, integrated support services are explicitly noted as an allowable intervention for funding and noted as a strategy that districts and states can employ or use to turn around underperforming schools. ESSA recognizes that family and student support play a key role in improving academic outcomes for students.

Dr. Tyler encourages educators to uphold principles like equity, social justice, and community that transcend any one administration. Principles such as these are at the core of legislation like ESSA. Furthermore, parent engagement is a crucial part in ensuring student success.

Parents should see themselves as partners. Parents should show up and share their vision for their children; what they see as their child’s strengths and how they would like to partner in assisting with their challenges. Parents should advocate for what they perceive are their needs.

Dr. Tyler charges parents to get informed about the policies that directly impact their household and remain consistent in their engagement to ensure staff accountability.

Equal Treatment for Blacks, Not Special Treatment

As the world commemorated the 50th anniversary of the assassination of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., I reflected upon the legacy of the iconic civil rights leader, I was reminded of two columns I wrote years ago in the form of poems. Yes, I do have a poetic side that most of the pub-

lic has not seen unless they have read my book, “Writing Wrongs: My Political Journey in Black and Write.”

The first column was written in January of 2005 titled, “Letter to Dr. King.” Please remember the context in which this piece was written. George W. Bush had just won a

second term as president; Barak Obama was just sworn in as the new senator from Illinois; Bill Cosby was being vilified for his now infamous “Pound Cake” speech before a NAACP awards program in Washington, D.C.; the speech was about Blacks being more responsible for what happens in their lives.

Even though Bush named Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice the first Black Secretary of State and National Security Advisor, respectively in the history of the United States, liberal Blacks still called Bush a racist; Former President George W. Bush also had a more diverse cabinet than former President Bill Clinton.

The second column was written six years later, in 2011, and titled, “The State of the Dream.” In this piece, I was very critical of how Blacks awarded the contracts to design and construct King’s statue on The Mall in Washington, D.C., to a Chinese sculptor and not an American; this is why I will never visit it—ever. They even imported the granite from China, even though they could have gotten the same quality of materials in the U.S. One of the most prominent sculptors in the U.S. is Ed Dwight, Jr. who just happens to also be a former Air Force test pilot and the first Black to be trained as an astronaut.

Why was he not commissioned to do King’s sculpture?

With this as a backdrop, I think if King was living today, he would be totally embarrassed and ashamed of the Black community; and he would be totally disappointed in the White community, as well.

When people called King the “n-word,” it was not a term of endearment; it was a term of death, as in, “Kill the n—ger!” I am quite sure that Jesse Jackson never walked up to King and said, “Yo, what’s up my n—ger!?”

Now, you have Blacks all over television, movies, and public spaces using the word in mixed company. Then Blacks have the nerve to want to get angry when a nonBlack does the same thing. N--ga, puh-leeeze!

No one should be using the word. Period. The very use of this word is an affront to everything King represented.

Another thing that would embarrass Dr. King, would be the blatant mistreatment and degradation of Black women. When did it become okay to call our women bitches and hoes?

Or what about the way some young people dress? Do you really think King would have approved of us walking around with our pants hanging down to our knees or our women showing all manner of body parts at work, church and on the street?

To my White folks: I think King would be disappointed that insidious social engineering through programs like welfare systematically have contributed to the destruction of the Black family and the emasculation of the Black male.

Some of these perverted programs have also had a negative impact on the rest of America.

America, with all the strides that we have made, continues to hand the Blacks the same check returned with the words “insufficient funds” stamped on its face ever time they try to cash it.

King didn’t want special treatment for Blacks; he simply wanted equal treatment. He didn’t want Blacks to become a protected class; he simply wanted America to enforce the Constitution.

We already had the right to vote; the right to live wherever we want; the right to eat at any restaurant; and the right to walk through the front door. The problem was that the Constitution wasn’t being enforced when it came to Blacks.

God had already endowed us with these inalienable rights that were codified in the U.S. Constitution.

Yes, America has come a long way from where we used to be, but we still have a long way to go.

But, to my liberal friends who constantly posit, “When was America ever great?” I simply say that America was great when Lincoln freed the slaves; America was great when we passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964; America was great when we passed the Voting Rights Act of 1965; America was great when we passed the Fair Housing Act of 1968; America was great, when we elected the first Black president in 2008.

So, as I reflect on King’s assassination and his legacy, I can hear him telling both Blacks and Whites: “Boy, go get me a switch, because you have brought shame on America.” After we start crying from his love taps from the switch, I can then see him grabbing us in his arms and lovingly saying, “Now, go do better.”

Cosby Could Spend Rest of His Life in Prison Continued from page A1

Cosby stared straight ahead as the verdict was read but moments later lashed out loudly at District Attorney Kevin Steele after the prosecutor demanded Cosby be sent immediately to jail.

Steele told the judge they’d learned through the trial that Cosby has an airplane, and feared he could flee.

Cosby angrily denied he has a plane and called Steele an “a-hole,” shouting, “I’m sick of him!”

Judge Steven O’Neill decided Cosby can remain free on $1 million bail while he awaits sentencing but restricted him to Montgomery County and the mansion where the encounter with Constand occurred.

Cosby was convicted of three counts of aggravated indecent assault, each carrying a standard sentence of five to 10 years in prison. The counts are likely to be merged for sentencing purposes, but given Cosby’s age even a modest term could mean he will die behind bars.

Sentencing will likely be held within three months. Before that, Cosby must face assessment to determine if he is a sexually violent predator. He will also be required to register as a sex offender under Megan’s Law. The jury of seven men and five women deliberated 14 hours over two days before convicting Cosby.

Constand, a 45-year-old Temple University women’s basketball administrator, said Cosby knocked her out with three blue pills he called “your friends” and then penetrated her with his fingers as she lay immobilized, unable to resist or say no. Cosby claimed the encounter was consensual, saying he gave her the cold and allergy medicine Benadryl to relax.

Cosby waved to the crowd outside the courthouse, got into an SUV and left without saying anything. His lawyer Tom Mesereau declared “the fight is not over” and said he will appeal.

Shrieks erupted in the courtroom when the verdict was announced, and some of Cosby’s accusers whimpered and cried.

Constand remained stoic, then hugged her lawyer and members of the prosecution team.

The verdict came after a two-week retrial in which prosecutors had more courtroom weapons at their disposal than they did the first time: They put on the stand five other women who testified that Cosby, married for 54 years, drugged and violated them, too.

At Cosby’s first trial, which ended in a deadlocked jury less

than a year ago, only one additional accuser was allowed to testify.

“Justice has been done!” celebrity attorney Gloria Allred, who represented some of Cosby’s accusers, said on the courthouse steps. “We are so happy that finally we can say women are believed.”

The district attorney became tearyeyed as he commended Constand for what he said was courage in coming forward. As Constand stood silently behind him, Steele apologized to her for a previous DA’s decision in 2005 not to charge Cosby.

Cosby “was a man who had evaded this moment for far too long,” Steele said. “He used his celebrity, he used his wealth, he used his network of supporters to help him conceal his crimes.”

He added: “Now, we really know today who was really behind that act, who the real Bill Cosby was.”

Since Cosby’s first trial, the #MeToo movement has taken down powerful men in rapid succession, among them Harvey Weinstein, Matt Lauer, Kevin Spacey and Sen. Al Franken. During closing arguments, Cosby’s lawyers slammed #MeToo, calling Cosby its victim and likening it to a witch hunt or a lynching.

Cosby’s new defense team, led by Mesereau, the celebrity attorney who won an acquittal for Michael Jackson on child-molestation charges, launched a ferocious attack on Constand during the trial, calling her a “con artist” and “pathological liar” who framed Cosby to get rich.

Cosby’s defense team derided the other accusers as home-wreckers and suggested they made up their stories in a bid for money and fame.

But Cosby had long ago confirmed some of the rumors about drugs and extramarital sex. In a deposition he gave more than a decade ago as part of Constand’s lawsuit, he acknowledged he had obtained quaaludes to give to women he wanted to have

(AP) _ More than three decades after his trail went cold, one of California's most prolific and elusive serial killers was caught when investigators matched crime-scene DNA with genetic material stored by a relative on an online genealogical site, prosecutors said Thursday.

Authorities have said the DNA tied former police officer Joseph James DeAngelo, 72, to most of the 12 killings he is accused of committing between 1976 and 1986 as part of the Golden State Killer case.

Investigators also allege DeAngelo raped more than 50 women during that period.

Authorities declined to name the DNA site used to track the DNA. Companies such as Ancestry.com and 23andMe charge cus-

tomers to use their DNA to produce genetic profiles that determine ethnicity and can identify long-lost relatives, among other services. Both companies said Thursday they weren't involved in the case against DeAngelo.

Sacramento County District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert said investigators surreptitiously obtained his DNA last week from discarded material that ended up matching DNA at crime scenes.

Police received thousands of tips over the years, but DeAngelo's name had not been on the radar of law enforcement before last week, Schubert said.

In other developments Thursday, police in Visalia said DeAngelo is a suspect in the 1975 killing of community college teacher Claude Snelling in the farming community about 40 miles (64 kilometers) south of Fresno.

Coley President, Cal Poly Pomona As I was reflecting on the importance of CSU’s Super Sunday, what came to mind was an experience I had meeting an African American great-grandmother who introduced me to her 8-year-old great-grandson that she and her husband were raising. She had heard my message about the

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ The first black female member of the General Assembly is being nominated to the Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame.

The late Margaret E. Morton was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1972. She served four terms, representing Bridgeport. She later won a Democratic primary against an incumbent senator and then went on to win the general election after a lengthy court battle with Bridgeport Democrats.

She served six terms in the Senate, eventually becoming deputy president pro tempore in 1990. She retired in 1992 and died in 2012.

Four current black women legislators nominated Morton to the hall of fame, citing her “quiet determination” to fight prejudice and racism.

Nominations for the hall of fame are accepted on an ongoing basis and reviewed by a consulting scholars committee.

California Mayors Seek $1.5 Billion to Help Homeless

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) _ Mayors from California’s eleven largest cities on Wednesday asked state lawmakers to provide $1.5 billion to help with what they say is a growing homeless crisis.

They are backing legislation that would require the cities to provide matching funds, creating a $3 billion pot of money to be spent on affordable housing, temporary shelters, supportive services and outreach.

They said in an earlier letter to legislative leaders that lawmakers should use a quarter of the state’s $6.1 billion budget surplus to help the homeless.

San Diego Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer called it “the most pressing issue facing California cities today.’’

The mayors cited a 2017 federal estimate that the most populous state now has more than 134,000 homeless people.

Their request came the same day that two Democratic state senators announced they will seek $2 billion for affordable housing, also in response to the mayors’ requests.

The bipartisan group includes mayors from Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, San Francisco, Fresno, Long Beach, Sacramento, Oakland, Bakersfield, Anaheim and Santa Ana. The proposals come less than six months after Gov. Jerry Brown signed 15 housing bills into law. They imposed a new $75 real estate transaction fee and placed a $4 billion housing bond on the November ballot.

Authorities have said the DNA tied former police officer Joseph James DeAngelo, 72, to most of the 12 killings he is accused of committing between 1976 and 1986 as part of the Golden State Killer case.

“He always had a good escape route,” Salazar said.

Farrel Ward, 75, served on the Exeter Police Department with DeAngelo. Ward called him a “black sheep,” saying he was quiet and didn't fit in with other officers.

Ward said it's possible that DeAngelo helped with a search in a killing he's now suspected of committing. Ward doesn't recall DeAngelo directly working on the case but said it's possible he joined the hunt for the killer.

Ward said he thought DeAngelo was overqualified for the small-town job because he graduated from Sacramento State with a degree in criminal justice.

“He knew everything about everything, but he didn't have common sense about him,” Ward said Investigators searched DeAngelo's home on Thursday, looking for class rings, earrings, dishes and other items that were taken from crime scenes.

Authorities were also seeking weapons and other items that could link the suspect to the crimes, Sacramento County sheriff's Lt. Paul Belli said. He declined to say what, if anything, investigators had found.

Retired FBI profiler Clint Van Zandt said he and others have speculated that the serial killer had police or military training because of the sophistication of the crimes and the suspect's ability to elude capture.

DeAngelo had both. He served six years as a police officer after serving for nearly two years in the Navy during the Vietnam War. After leaving the Exeter police department, he joined the Auburn Police Department outside Sacramento. Auburn fired him in 1979 after he was caught shoplifting a hammer and dog repellent.

Investigators have linked DeAngelo to 11 killings that occurred after he was fired.

“There may have been a revenge aspect to it,” Van Zandt said of the crimes. “He was going to show police that he was smarter than any of them and that it was a mistake to fire him.”

Investigators said DeAngelo appeared to stop killing and raping after 1986 and settled down to steady employment and a middle-class life.

Profilers have said most serial killers usually don't stop until they die or get arrested, but a few have voluntarily quit.

Scientists developed a way to identify rapists and others through DNA fingerprinting in 1986, the same year as the last attack by the Golden State Killer.

Experts noted that DeAngelo likely knew about the highly publicized DNA breakthrough.

“He knew police techniques,” said John Jay College of Criminal Justice professor Louis Schlesinger. “He was smart.”

James Huddle said he always hoped police would catch the killer whose attacks prompted him to buy a pistol.

But he was stunned to find out the man arrested was DeAngelo, his former brother-in-law.

Huddle said it was “still just going crazy in my mind.”

First Black Female Nominated to State Hall of Fame HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ The first black female

member of the General Assembly is being nominated to the Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame.

The late Margaret E. Morton was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1972. She served four terms, representing Bridgeport. She later won a Democratic primary against an incumbent senator and then went on to win the general election after a lengthy court battle with Bridgeport Democrats.

She served six terms in the Senate, eventually becoming deputy president pro tempore in 1990. She retired in 1992 and died in 2012.

Four current black women legislators nominated Morton to the hall of fame, citing her “quiet determination” to fight prejudice and racism.

Nominations for the hall of fame are accepted on an ongoing basis and reviewed by a consulting scholars committee.

California Mayors Seek $1.5 Billion to Help Homeless

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) _ Mayors from California’s eleven largest cities on Wednesday asked state lawmakers to provide $1.5 billion to help with what they say is a growing homeless crisis.

They are backing legislation that would require the cities to provide matching funds, creating a $3 billion pot of money to be spent on affordable housing, temporary shelters, supportive services and outreach.

They said in an earlier letter to legislative leaders that lawmakers should use a quarter of the state’s $6.1 billion budget surplus to help the homeless.

San Diego Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer called it “the most pressing issue facing California cities today.’’

The mayors cited a 2017 federal estimate that the most populous state now has more than 134,000 homeless people.

Their request came the same day that two Democratic state senators announced they will seek $2 billion for affordable housing, also in response to the mayors’ requests.

The bipartisan group includes mayors from Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, San Francisco, Fresno, Long Beach, Sacramento, Oakland, Bakersfield, Anaheim and Santa Ana. The proposals come less than six months after Gov. Jerry Brown signed 15 housing bills into law. They imposed a new $75 real estate transaction fee and placed a $4 billion housing bond on the November ballot.

Texas Woman Defecates in Pants to Hide Drugs CORSICANA, Texas (AP) _ Police say a Texas woman attempted to hide evidence during an arrest by defecating in her pants and using the feces to conceal drugs.

Officers in Corsicana, about 55 miles (88 kilometers ) south of Dallas, were investigating a report of a theft at a grocery store on Wednesday when they attempted to subdue a female suspect and take her into custody. Police say they placed Shannen Martin in the back of a police cruiser where they say she intentionally defecated in her pants then hid a crack pipe, 2.3 grams of crack cocaine and a Valentine’s Day card in her excrement.

Officers had to sift through the woman’s feces to retrieve the evidence after Martin was booked on charges of tampering with evidence and possession of a controlled substance.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ Speaking out for the first time, the jury that convicted Bill Cosby at his sexual assault retrial said Monday it found the comedian's chief accuser to be “credible and compelling,” adding its verdict had nothing to do with the (hash) MeToo movement or any another factor outside the courtroom.

The jury wrote in a statement that it had “absolutely no reservations” about convicting Cosby of three counts of aggravated indecent assault. The youngest member of the panel, meanwhile, said in a separate TV interview that the comedian's own words about giving women quaaludes before sex in the 1970s sealed his fate.

Andrea Constand, now 45, testified that Cosby gave her three blue pills that knocked her out and then molested her at his home in 2004. The defense said it was consensual. Cosby settled Constand's civil suit for nearly $3.4 million in 2006, and his lawyers claimed at trial that she had framed him for the money.

But the jury rejected the defense argument. “Simply put, we were asked to assess the credibility of Ms. Constand's account of what happened to her, and each one of us found her account credible and compelling,” said the jury statement, which was dated Sunday and distributed Monday.

Juror Harrison Snyder, 22, told ABC that Cosby's 2005 deposition was the evidence that made him believe he was guilty.

“I think it was his deposition, really. Mr. Cosby admitted to giving these quaaludes to women, young women, in order to have sex with them,” Snyder said on “Good Morning America.”

Snyder said it “wasn't an open and shut case,” but added he had no doubt the jury reached the correct verdict Thursday.

The investigation into Cosby was reopened in July 2015 after a federal judge, acting on a request from The Associated Press,

unsealed portions of Cosby's deposition testimony from the civil suit he settled with Constand. In the testimony, which was read to jurors at both trials, he described giving quaaludes to women before sex in the 1970s. Cosby also described his sexual encounters with Constand, a Temple University women's basketball administrator.

Five other women testified at the retrial that Cosby had drugged and molested them as well, but Snyder said they weren't a factor in his decision.

“I don't think it really necessarily mattered that these other five women were here because he said it himself that he used drugs for other women,” he said.

In its statement, the Cosby jury said its decision was not influenced in any way by factors other than what was seen and heard in the courtroom.

“After thoughtful and meticulous consideration of the information and evidence provided to us, we came to our unanimous verdict,” the jury said. “Not once were race or the (hash)MeToo movement ever discussed, nor did either factor into our decision, as implied in various media outlets.”

Cosby, 80, is now a prisoner in his own suburban Philadelphia home and faces the prospect of spending the rest of his life behind bars as he awaits sentencing, likely within the next three months. His publicist has declared his conviction a “public lynching,” and his lawyers have vowed to appeal.

“This is what they wanted,” Cosby told the New York Post's Page Six after his conviction. He referred to prison as “that place.”

The Associated Press does not typically identify people who say they are victims of sexual assault unless they grant permission, as Constand has done.

“Black Panther” to Deliver Howard University Keynote Speech

By Lauren Victoria Burke NNPA Newswire Contributor Howard University alumnus Chadwick Boseman, 40, will give the keynote address at the school’s 150th commencement ceremony on May 12. The star of the movie “Black Panther” will also be presented with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters.

“I’m excited to return to the Mecca in celebration of the achievements of our illustrious students,” Boseman said in a statement announcing the keynote address. “Let’s listen, learn and build with one another.”

The movie “Black Panther” has become a worldwide phenomenon. It has now grossed more money than the hit movie “Titanic.” “Black Panther” has now grossed over $1.3 billion

worldwide and is the highest-grossing film of 2018. The movie is also now the third-highest-grossing film ever in the United States and the10th-highest-grossing film of all time.

Boseman graduated from Howard University and attended the British American Dramatic Academy at Oxford. Boseman can currently be seen starring as T’Challa/Black Panther in Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther” and “Avengers: Infinity War.” He made his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the African superhero in Marvel Studios’ “Captain America: Civil War,” in May 2016. Boseman’s breakout performance came in 2013 when he received rave reviews for his portrayal of the leg-

Shake, Rattle & Roll Jazz Fest Remembers Fats Domino

By REBECCA SANTANA Associated Press NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Fats Domino was a New Orleans musical legend when he died last year so it’s only fitting that his death - and his music - receive a special send-off this year during the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.

Organizers on Saturday marked the occasion with a jazz funeral as well as a special tribute performance in his honor.

Al `Lil Fats’ Jackson played the classic Domino song “Blueberry Hill” as crowds gathered Saturday at the festival’s ancestor area to remember Domino, who died last year.

The festival unveiled a painting of Domino sitting at his piano to join the other paintings of luminaries associated with the festival who have passed away.

One of Domino’s grandchildren, Angele Green, thanked the crowd for coming.

“In the words of my grandfather, let’s shake, rattle and roll,” she said.

Domino sold more than 110 million records, with hits including “Blueberry Hill,” “Ain’t That a Shame” and other standards of rock ‘n’ roll.

The rock ‘n’ roll pioneer helped change popular music with his steady, pounding piano and easy baritone. Despite his fame, he always stayed loyal to New Orleans. After 2005’s Hurricane Katrina as floodwaters swept the city, he and his

family were rescued by boat from his home but he lost three pianos and dozens of gold and platinum records and other memorabilia.

“There are two New Orleans musicians ... that changed the music of the whole world. That’s Louis Armstrong and Fats Domino,” said festival producer Quint Davis speaking before the festival, who said he had a “wonderful time” going back and listening to Domino’s music to prepare for the festival.

Carolyn Stark of Ann Arbor, Mich. was part of the crowd. She said she’d only seen Domino perform once but wanted to pay her respects.

“He was so happy when he was playing,” she said, adding that the image had stuck in her memory.

Eather Reynolds of New Orleans said she often drives by the house where Domino lived for a long time in the city’s Lower 9th Ward neighborhood. She grew up listening to his music that she described as part gospel and part jazz.

“But you could feel it in your soul,” she said.

The tribute concert Saturday features various members of Domino’s band who are still playing, as well as special musical guests like Bonnie Raitt and Jon Batiste.

The jazz funeral featured the Tornado Brass Band as well as three of the city’s social aid and pleasure clubs. Domino is also featured on this year’s festival poster. “He’s with us everywhere,” said Davis.

Manhattan's Plaza Hotel is asking guests to wear hats, gloves and other finery to a $150 Champagne breakfast beginning at 6:30 a.m., New York time, on May 19. The best-dressed attendee will win a prize of a free night at the hotel. The wedding will be livestreamed in the Plaza's Palm Court on big-screen TVs as it unfolds live midday in England at Windsor Castle. A panel of experts at the Plaza will provide play-by-play commentary on etiquette, the royal family and whatever else needs explicating on this side of the pond.

The Plaza even has a legitimate connection to Markle. In her former life as an actress, she portrayed Rachel Zane on the cable show “Suits.” Her character dreamed of getting married at the Plaza, though the wedding scene for the show was actually filmed at the Fairmont Royal York in Toronto. “Royal weddings occur on only a few occasions during a lifetime,” said Larry Chiagouris, professor of marketing at Pace University in New York. “They are therefore a rare opportunity for brands to reach large global audiences and for consumers to be a part of a rare event. So, to do so, the price of participation will always be very, very high.”

The Drake hotel in Chicago will host a royal-themed luncheon on May 19 with the same menu served in 1996 when Harry's mother, Princess Diana, stayed there. Guests can even book the suite Diana stayed in, which has been decorated with photos of her. The Drake is also offering special royal teas, cocktails and a series of screenings of royal-themed movies like “Victoria & Abdul.”

In England, the Conrad London St. James has a “Propose Like A Prince” package with a horse carriage ride, Champagne and a room decorated with rose petals. And Mercure Hotels invited couples who share Harry and Meghan's first names to apply for a free stay at one of Mercure's London properties, and two couples won.

Royal-watchers heading to England will find it nearly impossible to book a room in Windsor, though hotels in London and elsewhere are still available. London's Hotel Cafe Royal has a package that includes a luxury limo trip to Windsor Castle with a picnic hamper. Just don't try to picnic there on May 19.

Time’s Up Takes Aim at R. Kelly Over Sex Misconduct

By NEKESA MUMBI MOODY AP Entertainment Writer NEW YORK (AP) _ The Time's Up campaign is taking aim at R. Kelly over allegations he has sexually abused women.

The organization devoted to helping women in the aftermath of sexual abuse issued a statement Monday urging further investigation into Kelly's behavior, which has come under closer scrutiny over the last year as women have come forward to accuse him of everything from sexual coercion to physical abuse. Kelly has denied such charges.

“We demand appropriate investigations and inquiries into the allegations of R. Kelly's abuse made by women and their families for more than two decades now. And we declare with great vigilance and a united voice to anyone who wants to silence us _ their time is up,” the statement said.

The statement was issued by the Women of Color committee within Time's Up, which includes Oscar-nominated director Ava DuVernay, TV mogul Shonda Rhimes and actress Jurnee Smollett-Bell.

The social media campaign (hash)MuteRKelly has sought to stop his music from being played and to cancel his concerts, and Time's Up said it is joining that call.

Specifically, Time's Up is seeking action from RCA Records, Kelly's label; Spotify and Apple Music, which stream Kelly's catalog; and Ticketmaster, which has sold tickets to his concerts. And it is calling for the cancellation of a May 11 concert in Greensboro, North Carolina.

RCA, Spotify, Apple Music and Ticketmaster didn't immediately respond to email requests placed late Sunday night.

The Time's Up letter was addressed to women of color. It started by saying, “We see you. We feel you. Because we are you.”

It continued: “For too long, our community has ignored our pain. The pain we bear is a burden that too many women of color have had to bear for centuries. The wounds run deep. As Women of Color within Time's Up, we recognize we have a responsibility to help right this wrong. We intend to shine a bright light on our WOC sisters in need.”

Time's Up cited Bill Cosby's conviction last week for sexual assault as a step in the right direction but said it was “just a start.”

In a further statement to The Associated Press, Smollett-Bell said: “We stand linked with our sisters and will no longer tolerate the predatory behavior of R. Kelly to go unchecked. This is a call to action to (hash)MuteRKelly. His music must be turned down and the voices of these brave survivors must be heard.”

The organizers of the (hash)MuteRKelly movement said they were gratified that Time's Up was amplifying their cause.

“We will not stop until R. Kelly is held accountable for his sexual misconduct against Black girls and women, and we urge ALL artists, radio stations, record companies, streaming platforms and concert venues to cut ties with this accused predator,” Oronike Odeleye, a co-founder of the movement, said in a statement.

R. Kelly, whose hits include “Ignition,” “I Believe I Can Fly,” “Step in the Name of Love,” “Same Girl” and “Bump N' Grind,” is one of pop music's best-selling artists. He has also written hits for artists ranging from Celine Dion to Michael Jackson to Lady Gaga. While he's written classic love songs and even gospel music, he is defined by sexually explicit songs such as “Feelin' on Yo Booty,” “Your Body's Calling Me,” “Sex Me” and even more explicit fare.

He has long been accused of behavior that has ranged from questionable to criminal. He wed a 15-year-old Aaliyah in 1994.

He was later accused of child pornography after a widely circulated videotape appeared to show him having sex with, and urinating on, a teenage girl. He was acquitted of all charges in 2008 and continued to rack up hits and sell out stadiums around the country.

In recent years, as more women have come forward to allege misconduct, protests against Kelly have increased.

A woman told Rolling Stone last year that she was in a longterm relationship with the singer that was sexually and physically abusive. Parents claimed their daughter was being held by Kelly as part of a sex cult but their daughter, who was of age, denied their claims. And recently a woman in Dallas filed a lawsuit against the singer claiming he gave her a sexually transmitted disease, and she claimed he was grooming her to be a part of a sex cult.

Kelly has denied all allegations against him.

Kelly hasn't released an album of new music since a 2016 Christmas album, and his last true album was 2015's “The Buffet,” which had no major hits.

An appearance at a concert in his native Chicago scheduled for Friday was canceled after protests. In a Twitter post on Sunday to his fans, Kelly said he was looking forward to his May 11 concert and had no idea why his Chicago appearance was scrapped.

“I never heard of a show being canceled because of rumors, but I guess it's a first time for everything and I apologize to you guys, and in the meantime, I'm going to try and get to the bottom line of it, as far as my lawyers are concerned,” he said in a video.

Taylor Youth Development Foundation Gains Momentum

By Cameron Buford Contributing Sports Writer As we know, the inner-city youth can use all the support they can get. Far too often, the positive activities of athletes get suppressed and unheralded. Yet, the nonprofit, Taylor Youth Development Foundation commits itself to partnering with athletes to enhance their message while working with the under privileged youth within the community to better it’s people and society.

Chuck Taylor has been bringing the community together for over 20 years with his Annual Picnics and Community Giveaways. In 2017, Mr. Taylor planned to stop giving his is huge picnic and until recently he realized how much the picnic impacts the community. Bringing out over 5000 people each year, the picnic will now be an entity of the newly formed Non-Profit Organization named The Taylor Youth Development Foundation.

The Taylor Youth Development Foundation is dedicated to exposing the youth to stellar examples of professional athletes, artist and educators that are committed to inspiring our youth to be all they can be in the classroom, on the court, and in Life. The focus is to provide support for the inner-city youth in becoming positive, productive, and successful members of society. Additionally, they want to motivate and celebrate academic maturation of youth within various communities!

Just recently Lamar Odom, Baron Davis and The Taylor Youth Development Foundation teamed up to host, So Cal C.H.A.M.P. (Celebrity Honors Academic Maturation Program). The purpose of this event is to celebrate and honor students from Los Angeles County who have shown major strides in academic achievement. It is events like these that should encourage and promote academic growth within the youth in the community.

Ceremonies for the event held at Edward R Roybal Learning Center, on April 22, 2018. Odom and Davis served as Head Coaches of the competing teams. These competing teams included DeLisha Milton Jones and Dahntay Jones on the rosters.

Over 100 students were selected by their individual improvements in grades, test scores, social skills and work ethic. Administrators and teachers of participating schools based were involved in this tedious selection process.

These students were also publicly recognized during the game while also participating in “meet and greets” with the many celebrities in attendance.

“The Gianna Gray concept to honor the most improved students was to make sure that our youth stays motivated in school and strive for excellence in all that they do. Not everyone will be an honor roll student, but efforts of improvement should never go unnoticed!” says the events Creative Director Crystle Paynther-Collins.

“Many of these students may not qualify for their school’s honor roll but have been chosen because they’ve worked hard and made considerable progress,” said Gianna Gray, the foundation’s director. “I wholeheartedly believe that these students need to be celebrated and encouraged and that’s the sole goal of our event.”

“The event takes place on Earth Day, which is fitting as we’re planting seeds for success and honoring youth who are flourishing and growing in their academic pursuits,” she continued.

Local Players Go High in NFL Draft

The 2018 NFL draft saw local talent get off the board early. USC QB Sam Darnold was selected third overall behind Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield and RB Saquon Barkley of Penn State.

UCLA QB Josh Rosen went ten to the Arizona Cardinals. He was one of five quarterbacks selected in the first

round. Rosen was a little more fiery than Darnold due to his selection. “There were nine made ahead of me” said Rosen. I am going to make sure they know it was a mistake.”

Also taken in the first round was UCLA o-lineman Kolten. The 6-9 310 pounder went to the Oakland Raiders.

“Before the combines I talked to 23 teams. I had no idea where I was going to wind-up. I am glad to be a Raider right now. I am glad to get this opportunity. I am ready to go to work.”
