Harvard Law School’s First Deaf-Blind Graduate Joins the Company as a D&I Consultant MORRISVILLE, NC – Lenovo, a leader in innovation and developing transformative products, services and solutions, recently released its 2018/2019 Diversity & Inclusion Report. One key highlight is Haben Girma, Harvard Law School’s first deaf-blind graduate joining the team as the first external D&I consultant helping to better integrate the needs of the disability community into its products and workplace. Girma, an advocate for equal opportunities for people with disabilities, is an African American and first-generation immigrant that has earned President Obama naming her a White House Champion of Change, the Helen Keller Achievement Award and a spot on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list.

The report demonstrates the company’s continued investment in their employees to foster growth and development that leads to better decisions, better products and better business results. “We are proud of our progress in diversity and to be a part of recasting the model for multinational companies,” said Yolanda Lee Conyers, chief diversity officer and president, Lenovo Foundation. “We are committed to continuing our work of advancing greater diversity in all its forms across our workforce and to foster a sense of belonging with inclusive practices.”

The report revealed in the last 12 months, 66 unique nationalities were hired across 61 markets, 100 different languages are spoken by Lenovo employees, five unique nationalities are represented among their top 14 executives in the Lenovo Executive Committee and 97 percent of their business managers are native residents to the markets they work in.

Lenovo also succeeded in achieving their goal of impacting one million people through the benefit of philanthropy and volunteerism around the world. In October 2018, Lenovo launched The Lenovo Foundation to invest in STEM education programs, increase access to diverse populations and empower employees to improve their communities. As a result of their commitment, The Foundation awarded 16 mini-grants to organizations around the world such as an organization in Kenya that was outfitted with a new computer lab to serve a disconnected community.

Biden Seeks to Upstage Buttigieg in Fight for California

By MICHAEL R. BLOOD Associated Press LOS ANGELES (AP) – Joe Biden and Pete Buttigieg chased California votes on Friday in dueling events, looking to sway Democrats in the state that delivers the largest haul of delegates in the presidential contest.

Appearing at a short-term housing complex for the homeless, Buttigieg promised a new era of help for people living on the streets, while Biden sought to upstage the former South Bend, Indiana, mayor with a formal endorsement from Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti attended by firefighters. The endorsement was initially announced Thursday.

Garcetti called Biden a longtime friend, “the right leader at the right moment.” Garcetti was an early supporter of President Barack Obama, in whose administration Biden served as vice president for eight years.

Buttigieg’s stop highlighted the homeless crisis in Los Angeles, where tent cities line downtown streets and freeway underpasses are frequently filled with makeshift communities of people with nowhere else to go. He listened intently to stories from residents of the so-called bridge home who described their journey from the streets to the shelter, where they are linked with health services, receive assistance restoring their lives and, hopefully, locate permanent housing. Residents can stay up to nine months.

Jessica Kelly, who said she once had a career in pharmaceutical sales, described how her life unraveled after a string of back surgeries led to opioid misuse and, eventually, a heroin addition. After several years without a home, finding a bed at the shelter has been “a blessing for me,’’ she told Buttigieg.

Buttigieg has said he will invest $430 billion to make affordable housing available for over 7 million families while aiming to end homelessness for families with children.

The mayor stressed that homeless was a problem that cuts across communities “of every size, in every climate.’’

He has faced criticism in his hometown for being too slow to act, but his campaign said homelessness was cut by 25% during his tenure.

A small but noisy group of Black Lives Matter pro-

testers shadowed his visit, chanting on a sidewalk outside the shelter that Buttigieg was a “fake’’ and “anti-black.’’ A planned outdoor discussion with residents was moved indoors, though the din of the protesters could still be faintly heard in the room.

“The people of South Bend feel abandoned,’’ said protester Kahmiil Middleton, who lives in South Bend.

Buttigieg told reporters afterward, “It is important to me that I have the support that I do from black residents of South Bend. I know that support is not 100%, and I respect those political differences.’’

Candidates are competing for over 400 delegates in California’s March 3 primary, though mail-in ballots will be going out a month earlier, at the time the Iowa caucuses kick off the presidential election.

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders has a massive volunteer organizing effort underway in California, while billionaire Michael Bloomberg has been spending tens of millions on TV advertising across the heavily Democratic state. With Garcetti’s endorsement, Biden is strengthening his position as the favorite within the Democratic establishment.

President Donald Trump, who lost California by over 4 million votes in 2016, has called the homelessness crisis in Los Angeles, San Francisco and other big cities disgraceful and faulted the “liberal establishment’’ for the problem.

Golden Globe Awards Blackout

Travesty or Testament?

Historically, the Golden Globes and similar award shows have not been good at identifying, acknowledging or rewarding black talent, much like the entertainment industries themselves.

Burton, Ph.D., NNPA Newswire Entertainment and Culture Editor Many cultural critics and pundits were in an uproar over the shutout of black talent at the 2020 Golden Globe Awards held Jan. 5. The Golden Globes are voted on by the Hollywood Foreign Press, which is a non-profit organization composed of journalists, photographers and media professionals who report on the entertainment industry.

Last year actress/director Regina King took home a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role for If Beale Street Could Talk and Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television for Seven Seconds (Netflix).

Mahershala Ali won for Best Performance by an actor in a Motion Picture for Green Book in 2019.

These were the awards despite the tremendous amount of black talent on and off-screen in 2019 in major motion pictures like Black Panther and BlacKkKlansman and a litany of amazing performances in front of and behind the small screen on network and cable television.

Black folks fared even worse at the 2020 Golden Globes not taking home one statue, even with compelling television and film like The Last Black Man in San Francisco (A24), Black and Blue (Screen Gems), Queen & Slim, Raising Dion (Netflix), American Gods (Starz) , Southside (Comedy Central), Pose (F/X), Dear White People (Netflix), Claws (TNT), Snowfall (F/X), When They See Us (Netflix), not to mention outstanding web series like Giants and Pillow Talk.

Suffice it to say the Golden Globes still aren’t feeling Black talent, so why are audiences so invested in this show and others?

Black talent being shut out of the Golden Globes is not just a travesty but also a testament to the power of the work and the narratives being told that challenge the status quo. Why folks assume that awards shows invested in the same media industries that continue to perpetuate and recycle the vilest stereotypes of black identity and behavior would somehow acknowledge the stories, performances and behind-the-scenes work that challenges dominant ways of thinking about Black people on and off-screen is befuddling.

Black folks aren’t the only historically marginalized group snubbed by the Golden Globes. No women directors were nominated for any directing awards this year.

Only five women have ever been nominated for directing in the 77-year history of the Golden Globes. Most recently was Ava DuVernay (Selma) in 2015; Barbra Streisand (Yentl and The Prince of Tides), Jane Campion (The Piano), Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation) and Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty). How is it possible for Greta Gerwig (Little Women) and Lulu Wang (The Farewell) and Ava DuVernay (When They See Us) to not be nominated this year?

It is entirely possible in an industry that has yet to catch up to a century of overlooking and further marginalizing members of historically disenfranchised groups. There is a reason Black showrunners and filmmakers like Shonda

Rhimes and Kenya Barris are moving to Netflix. They want to tell compelling stories and have power over final edits that don’t dilute the power of their prose by elevating the feelings and needs of White viewers over all others.

According to the University of Southern California’s Inclusion in the Director’s Chair Study, only 4.9 percent of top films were directed by women in Hollywood 20072019. Twenty percent of Netflix’s 53 U.S. films was directed by women in 2019. Of the 4.9 percent of women directors in Hollywood, less than 1 percent were directed by women of color.

Netflix has also aggressively diversified its staff to reflect the changing demographics of society while Hollywood slowly makes hiring changes through pipeline programs with abysmal full-time job conversions.

The Farewell actress Awkwafina made Golden Globes history by becoming the first performer of Asian descent to win a Golden Globe award in a lead actress in a musical or comedy, which is a triumph in some ways, but could also be considered a travesty with the amount of influential and amazing work that has come from people of Asian descent on-screen and off-screen in the United States and abroad.

Mainstream award shows like The Golden Globe Awards, The Academy Awards, The BAFTA Awards aren’t really for us and were not created with Black talent in mind.

Black talent will continue kicking down doors in Hollywood and telling stories as members of the Hollywood establishment and outside of the Hollywood establishment, which is how change is created.

Historically, the Golden Globes and similar award shows have not been good at identifying, acknowledging or rewarding black talent, much like the entertainment industries themselves.

Change is slow but sure, but there is no need to be a glutton for punishment. Tune into the NAACP Image Awards, the African American Film Critics Association Awards and the BET Awards if you want to see a greater representation and acknowledgement of black talent in the entertainment industry that is actually celebrated and rewarded.

Hope springs eternal but to continue hoping mainstream awards shows will give a damn about Black talent and audiences is an exercise in disappointment. The overlooking of black talent by mainstream awards shows is a travesty, but it is also a testament to the power and influence of the work by black writers, directors, producers and performers. To reflect the sentiment of a favorite internet meme — make it happen, clap for your damned self and keep it moving.

Fulfilling Dr. King’s Dream

Alexander OXON HILL, Md. – Inside the illuminated MGM National Harbor towering over the Potomac River, the 3,000-seat theater slowly fills with African Americans donned in tuxedos and gowns as Hollywood’s and New York’s top entertainers mix with some of Washington, D.C.’s bourgeoisie including politicians and business leaders. All have gathered to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Urban One Inc., the nation’s largest distributor of news and entertainment aimed solely at black consumers, which also includes the largest African American owned TV network.

The media company that for decades was known as Radio One Inc. for its stable of radio stations across the country, changed its name in 2017 to Urban One, a new name that reflects, its owners believed, its channeled mission of providing media content to urban audiences via all forms of media through its divisions including radio, television programming with its TV One cable network and now the Internet.

Still at the helm of Urban One is the legendary woman with the mic, camera and now computer keyboard is the company’s founder and chairwoman, Cathy Hughes.

On this recent night, the 72-year-old energetic and spirited Hughes is also serving as co-host for the 40th anniversary Urban One Honors awards show with comedian Chris Tucker, which is scheduled to air Hughes’s TV One network Jan. 20.

The show, however, is already running late before it even began. Taping was supposed to begin 20 minutes or so ago. But people are still slowly filling their seats. Then, to a round of staccato applause and without an introduction, Hughes, with her broad smile, walked onto the stage. She apologized for the late start. The staffing at the entrances of the MGM, she said, have been slow in allowing audience members through the doors. “But I’ll take care of this,” she said while putting a finger in the air.

Hughes disappears backstage. And within 10 minutes, as if a dam burst, audience members began rushing into the theater to their seats. Minutes later, the orchestra begins playing and Hughes and Tucker walk on stage arm in arm to begin the two-hour show.

No one messes with Cathy Hughes, especially when she is their boss. That’s right, in addition to the various entertainment companies, Urban One also owns nearly 7 percent of the $1.4 billion, MGM casino, hotel and resort, a purchase the company made when the resort opened three years ago.

As the nation celebrates the birthday of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. this month, those who knew King well, say Hughes and Urban One are the epitome of King’s

dream. Dr. Benjamin Chavis, who worked as a youth leader for King in the 1960’s, said Hughes was able to break through the historically, white male controlled world of media ownership and create her own media company that she uses to not only to reach millions of people around the world to ensure that the voices of African Americans continue to be shared and visible.

“Urban One continues to fulfill Dr. King’s dream,” Chavis said. “The best way to celebrate black history is to make more history. Cathy Hughes continues to make black history.” Chavis is now head of the National Newspaper Publishers Association, made up of more than 200 blackowned newspapers across the country.

The Hughes media story is well known. She began her career in 1969 at an AM radio station in her native Omaha, but left for Washington, D.C. when she was offered a job as a lecturer at Howard University. In 1973, Hughes was named general sales manager of WHUR, Howard’s FM radio station. Two years later, Hughes was promoted to general manager. There she created the late night, slowjam formatted staple called “The Quiet Storm” a signature sound that expanded to radio stations around the country.

In that short time, Hughes had taken annual revenues at the station from $250,000 to more than $3.5 million.

In 1979, Hughes and then-husband Dewey Hughes sought financing to purchase their own radio station and were rejected by 32 banks until 1980 when they secured lending to buy WOL-AM, a tiny Washington, D.C. station located in Northeast Washington. That first station led to the acquisitions of dozens of radio stations around the country. Then in 2004, with her son Alfred C. Liggins III, a Wharton School of Business MBA graduate as chief executive officer his mother’s company, Radio One branched into television by creating TV One, a cable network reaching more than 40 million African American TV households.

In 2017, TV One changed its name to Urban One after it acquired a collection of Internet media websites, now known as iOne Digital, that focus on news, sports and entertainment stories about and for black audiences.

Today, Urban One is worth, according to Wall Street estimates based on stock price of about $98 million. The company boasts of reaching 59 million households, 22 million listeners, 40 million video streams, 20 million unique Web visitors. It owns 57 broadcast stations in 15 urban markets, two cable networks and some 80 websites.

Hughes works closely with her son who she credits with diversifying Urban One beyond radio and TV. “This company has a commitment to serving our audience that is evidenced beyond just the mission of making money. It is to build an organization that represents the needs and interests of a community that for the majority

of this country’s history, hasn’t had a voice to fight for it,” Liggins, 54, said recently.

Throughout the night at the star-studded awards at the MGM, the influence that Hughes has garnered over the four decades was repeatedly echoed by those who took the stage.

Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliott surrounded on stage by other rap legends Lil Kim and Da Brat, became emotional during her acceptance speech. She described Hughes as “bold, fierce, strong, innovative (and) a visionary.” Elliott said a “big” part of her success was due to Urban One. “We are all chosen, but there are certain people chosen to be a vessel,” Elliott said of Hughes.

During his acceptance speech, actor and singer Jamie Foxx spoke of when he and director and writer Quentin Tarantino were making the 2012 “Django Unchained,” they were concerned about the use of the N-word in the film and how audiences would receive the racist word. Foxx told the audience that he told Tarantino “the only person who could help them” ensure audiences would not be put off by the repeated use of the racist word would be Hughes.

So, the two asked Hughes to come to the movie set so she could see the filming and hear the vision behind it. Foxx said they needed Hughes’s “blessing” knowing that her influence with audiences could ultimately make or break the film.

When he took the stage, Broadway, film and TV performer Billy Porter described how being celebrated by a black media company in front of a predominately black

audience, was unusual for out, gay black entertainers. “As a black, queer man in the world, this is such a special day for me. I never felt welcomed. Today in this space, for the first time in my life, I feel like I am a part of this community,” Porter said grabbing Hughes’s hand as she joined him on stage.

During his acceptance speech, Chance the Rapper described Hughes – or Miss H. as he calls her - as a “trailblazer” and a “maverick” who, he said, “built an entire industry, for us.”

Hughes says she plans to continue to build and rebuild the media industry as the technology changes how black households receive their information and entertainment.

“Today, we reach 92 percent of black households,” Hughes added. “We plan to get to 100 percent.”

“If the black audience that we serve decides that they want to receive our messages via carrier pigeon, then I’m getting ready to go into the bird business. I don’t know what it will take in the future in order to reach that goal.

That will depend on what advances occur in technology.”

Urban One’s plan, Hughes says, is to ensure the company will be at the center, the premiere go-to media outlet for black households.

“It’s important for us to have black owned and controlled, particularly in the media, business ventures, nobody is going to tell our stories from our perspective, except us,” she said. “Nobody is going to do that for us.

Why should they or would they? It’s our responsibility to do that.”

California Assembly Elects First Woman as Chief Clerk and Parliamentarian

Tanu Henry California Black Media The California Assembly made history last week when it elected the first woman to serve as Chief Clerk and Parliamentarian Jan. 9 for a two-year term.

The 80-member lower house of the state legislature voted for, then confirmed and swore in Sue Parker, a longserving African-American public official, to the Assembly’s non-member, non-partisan role.

Parker, who lives in Elk Grove, is the 40th person to serve in the role since it was first created in 1849. She succeeds E. Dotson Wilson, who is also African American, after he retired in September.

“I’m humbled by this opportunity to serve,” Parker told California Black Media. “And I’m honored to be the first woman to do so.”

Before assuming her current role, Parker served as Assistant Chief Clerk. In that position, she ran the operations of the Assembly Desk, including updating legislative information on the clerk’s website. She began her career as a Senate fellow, and for the last 20 years, she has served in numerous capacities in that office. She was also the first female to be appointed Reading Clerk.

“It has not been an easy road for her. I’m so proud of this accomplishment,” said Taisha Brown, Chair of the California Democratic Party African American Caucus (CDPAAC). “It’s time that a woman got elected to that position and Parker is both qualified and prepared. It is a joy to see so many women stepping into powerful roles in the Democratic Party and the state government.”

As Chief Clerk, Parker is charged with publishing all official documents of the House, keeping a record of all proceedings and documenting legislation. She will also ensure that the legislative process is smooth, efficient and fair, and that members follow parliamentary procedure.

The same day Parker took the helm of the Chief Clerk’s office, the Assembly also confirmed two more women to the body’s other unelected roles: Alisa Buckley as Chief Sergeant at Arms and the Rev. Patti Oshita as Chaplain.

It’s the first time in California’s history that women have served in all three of the Assembly’s non-member offices at the same time.

“It was a historic day in the Assembly,” said Speaker Anthony Rendon (D-Los Angeles). “I know Chief Parker and Chief Buckley will bring knowledge and insight to their new roles.”

Seven questions, every 10 years What is the census? The census is a self-portrait of the nation. The U. S. Constitution requires that the federal government COUNT EVERYONE LIVING IN THE COUNTRY EVERY 10 YEARS. Participating in the census amounts to answering seven questions -- plus two qualifying ones -- for a total of nine questions, said Peter Griffith, senior partnership specialist for the Los Angeles region of the U.S. Census Bureau.

That´s it. The rewards for that are significant in resources, services and political rights.

Who is counted?

Everyone means EVERYONE: people of all races and ethnic groups, citizens and NON-citizens, all adults and all children, regardless of age. There are very few exceptions to this.

The key to this is that every person should be counted, not “estimated statistically” or “counted via records,” added Terri Ann Lowenthal, one of the nation’s foremost experts on everything census.

Every person who lives in United States territory on April 1 needs to be counted. Short-time visitors aren´t counted but longer-term visitors, such as foreign students and temporary workers, are. The Census Bureau webpage offers a detailed list of who should be counted, and where.

That day is known as CENSUS DAY. But the action starts long before that.

To be counted, every HOUSEHOLD first has to respond to those nine questions.

But what is a household?

The U.S. Census counts people by their “household,” which includes every person or persons living in a “single living quarter.” Every household will get a “unique I.D. number” that identifies it, and this is tied to a mailing address or physical structure, not to an individual name or a family.

A household can be made up of one person, or one family and the family friend who lives in a back room, or a group of roommates. At the time of response, all of them, including babies born by April 1, should be included as part of the same household. AGAIN: BABIES NEED TO BE COUNTED. Children age 0-4 were significantly undercounted in 2010 because, among other reasons, people mistakenly believed they didn´t have to be included.

People are counted at their “usual place of residence” on Census Day, but that doesn´t necessarily mean that´s their legal, permanent residence. For example, if you’re a student living in a dorm, you need to be counted there.

It´s the same with group facilities like military barracks, hospitals, jails or prisons.

The census also conducts an “Enumeration of Transitory Locations” of people who don´t have a “stationary” home (RV parks, marinas, agricultural workers). These locations will be visited by census takers in March and April. This does not include tourists visiting the United States or short-time business visitors -- about the only people who are not counted in the U.S. Census.

census should count just citizens or all residents. The Constitution is clear about that, Lowenthal said.

“Congress has debated whether to change the basis for apportionment to ‘citizens’ or even ‘voters’ at several points in our history, including when the Constitution was drafted, but each time, lawmakers ultimately rejected a change,” she said. “The requirement says that the apportionment must be based on the ‘whole number of persons.’”

In other words, no matter who you are, you NEED to be counted in the census.

Why? “Because the constitution says so,” census experts say.

“Please include everybody in the household in the questionnaire,” said NALEO’s Vargas. “The Census Bureau won´t go back to check if you listed everyone, and getting everyone to count is extremely important for our communities.”

Three ways of self-responding People insist on calling this “the first digital census,” but, in reality, not everyone has to respond digitally. Some prefer to call it “the first high-tech census.” But to respond online is just one option. All households will have the chance to “self-respond” to the census either by internet, telephone or the “traditional” paper questionnaire that, until now, has been the most common method of collecting census data for more than a century.

Starting March 12, 95% of households will get a package in the mail from the Census Bureau. Most people (80%) will get a LETTER with a unique ID inviting them to respond online; 20% of homes get a similar letter plus a paper questionnaire in the first mailing. The mailings will be sent in four waves (March 12, 13, 19 and 20).

Then there will be as many as four more mailings: • A reminder letter • A reminder postcard to households that have not self-responded • A reminder letter plus paper questionnaire to those who have not self-responded (April 8-16) • An “it´s not too late” postcard (also to non-responders) Self-respond, don´t get a knock on the door When the Census Bureau does not hear from a household in the self-response phase, which starts March 12 and ends April 30, there will be a follow-up operation to try to get everyone else counted. That includes door-todoor visits, conducted from May 9 until the end of July.

Some people really don´t like the idea of getting one of these visits. In a recent chat with this reporter, Thomas A. Saenz, president and general counsel of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF), said that the best way to avoid the “knock” on the door is to be pro-active and “SELF-RESPOND” to the census.

But is it safe and confidential?

The short answer is YES. “The Census Act, Title 12, United States Code, includes the strictest confidentiality laws on the federal books, to my knowledge,” Lowenthal said at a census webinar for community organizations.

“There are other privacy laws that provide an additional layer of protection.”

By law, the Census Bureau may not share personally identifiable information with any other governmental agency (at any level of government), any private business, or any other party outside the Census Bureau, for any reason or purpose.

The longer answer is that a lot or public interest lawyers and community leaders are ready to intervene if

there´s even a hint that the current administration has violated any of these laws.

“We know many people don´t trust this administration to follow the law, so MALDEF and others are part of a coalition of organizations and respected leaders who have pledged to step in ‘early and heavy’ if there´s any hint of violation of census data,” MALDEF’s Saenz said.

LSU Tigers Take National Title

By Earl Heath Contributing Sports Writer It was a fairy tale ending for LSU quarterback Joe Burrow. After a slow start at Ohio State where he threw less than 40 passes in three years for the Buckeyes, the graduate transfer found a new football home in the Bayou.

He was so much liked that on Senior day he was allowed to wear his jersey with “Berreaux” on the back being adopted by everyone in the state.

This week he led the Tigers to their first National Championship since 2007. It was a convincing 42- 25 win over defending Champs Clemson.

He appeared to be the coolest of the cool. The Clemson defense pressured him periodically and he just shook it off.

The Walter Camp National Player of The Year completed 31 of 49 passes for 463 yards (CFP record) and 5 touchdowns, including a 56 yarder. He also ran for 58 yards on 14 carries.

It was the third straight game he has thrown at least 4 touchdowns. He also set a record with his season high 60th TD pass.

“He’s one of the greatest players in LSU History,” said Head coach Ed Orgeron. He’s on the soapbox for the state of Louisiana and LSU.” This season LSU beat seven top ten team including Clemson on the way to a perfect 15-0 record. They average 46 points a game.

It was a team effort as the Clemson Defense had no answer for Burrow and running back Clyde EdwardsHelaire who had 110 yards on 16 carries.

Ja’Marr Chase had a game high 9 catches for 221 yards and 2 TD’s. Clemson had only given up an average of 280 yards per game , but LSU racked up 628.

On the defensive side Patrick Queen and Jacob Phillips had 8 tackles apiece and Jacoby Stevens chipped in with five for a defense that held Clemson to 160 yards on the ground.

Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence didn’t have one of his better games completing 18 of 37 completed for 234 yards.

He suffered his first loss at the school. He was harassed by the defense all night long.

Clemson Head Coach Dabo Swinney summed it up by simply saying, “It was LSU’s night.”

LA Clippers Honored by NBA for 2019 -2020 Business Success

The NBA Team Sales & Marketing Awards are part of the annual NBA league meetings, held in Miami, Florida, where all 30 teams were recognized for their sales and marketing efforts for the 2019-2020 season.

“Recognition by the League and our peers of the progress we have made toward our ambitious goals is inspiring,” said Gillian Zucker, Clippers President of Business Operations. “Our head coach Doc Rivers refers to the Clippers transformation as a movement, and these awards are definitely an encouragement for us to keep moving relentlessly forward.”

Included in the honors for the Clippers’ five NBA awards were: New Full Season Ticket Award – With over 3,000 new full season tickets sold and leading the NBA in New Full Season Equivalents (FSE) for the 2019-20 season, the Clippers have built one of the top Season Ticket Membership programs across the league.

Individual Ticket Award – The Clippers have sold over 3,000 single-game tickets per game for the 2019-20 season, which has resulted in recording sellouts for every regularseason game.

Category Yield Award – The Clippers were one of the top three teams with the most revenue from the top 25 industry

categories, highlighted by a multi-year partnership deal with L.A-based technology company Honey. This partnership launched with the newly renamed Honey Training Center: Home of the L.A. Clippers and the displaying of Honey’s logo on Clippers practice jerseys.

Sponsorship Account Growth Award – By adding a record 30 new partners this season, the Clippers were recognized as one of the top three teams in the NBA with the highest percentage growth in corporate partnership revenue.

Digital Innovator Award – The Clippers led the league and set a team record in year over year engagement rate growth (106%) across team social media channels and set the standard for video and social content to help to move the business forward in digital sponsorship, ticket sales, and fan engagement.

These awards are consistent with their efforts to not only endear themselves to the local fans base but to put a competitive squad on the court. These awards coupled with the addition of Kawhi Leonard and Paul George have this team on an impressive trajectory. These awards also are evidence of their desire to set themselves apart from their counterparts across the country.

Clippers Seeking that Winning Formula

By Cameron Buford Whatsgoodinsports.com If you ask Clippers Head Coach Doc Rivers about the team’s mindset from last season, he’ll quickly tell you, “That was last season and that season has nothing to do with this season!” Additionally, you’ll be shut down if you ask him when this team will show signs of what he expects them to be, stating “it’s a work in progress. We’ve just got to keep working.” As I’ve been trying to get a timeline from him and the players all season.

After Tuesday night’s win against the Cleveland Cavaliers Doc echoed the same sentiments, “We are looking at being better the better basketball team each day.

It is all we talk about every day, our job is to get better each day and this cannot be the best we are right now. By game 82, that has to be the best we are. Every night is an opportunity to get better, this is all we talk about.”

When asked a similar question a few weeks ago Paul George responded by saying, “you can’t put a time table on that. Every team comes together at different times. You can’t really put a time frame on that, to be honest. I think what you want to do is use these games to get better going forward.”

The Clipper has been hampered by a multitude of injuries mid-way through the season, which has impacted the symmetry and consistency on the roster. Having guys in and out the lineup have severely hampered their team continuity and could be credited for the teams’ delayed progress. Their 27-13 record isn’t caused for alarm, though certainly isn’t where you expected them to be to this point in the season.

Their matchup against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday night, would present another chance to find that winning formula. Though again, it appears they’ll be without the All-Star Guard Paul George in this game.

However, injured or not, the Western Conference could conceivably pass over them as they are currently 6th in the Conference. This would have to be considered a disappointing place to finish the season, though I wouldn’t expect them to finish in this position at the end of the season.

Kawhi’s “leadership by example,” lead the team in scoring with 43 points on Tuesday night. Followed by Lou Williams’ 24 points, off the bench, propelled the Clippers to a 128- 103 win over the Cavaliers. This is only further evidence of their potential dominance, for when they finally get healthy.
