Historically, homeownership has been a reliable measure of the nation’s middle class. Late last year it stood at 64.4 according to the Census Bureau. Yet when race and ethnicity are added who owns a home today discloses a far different picture. White homeownership was higher than the national average at 73.1 percent.

But Blacks still-suffering from the financial losses from the now decade-old foreclosure crisis had a homeownership rate of 41.7 percent, lower than its pre-housing crisis rate of 47.7 percent. Today’s Black homeownership resembles the same levels experienced at the time of the 1968 Fair Housing Act’s passage.

Latino homeownership today is higher than that of Blacks at 46.3 percent; but still lower than its earlier precrisis rate of 47.7.

Housing also remains troubled for renters as well.

According to the National Low-Income Housing Coalition, the nation lacks more than 7 million affordable rental homes that affect 43.8 million families. Moreover,

11 million families pay more than half of their income on housing and are considered severely-cost burdened.

As of January 3, over 1,100 HUD contracts with landlords for its Section 8 rental voucher program expired.

By February, another 1,000 more contracts are expected to expire. At press time, the stalemated federal government shutdown continued, leaving millions of people uncertain about their lives, or livelihoods or both. While landlords and HUD figure out the paperwork, 1.2 million families relying on this vital rental support program remain at risk.

Also caught in partisan bickering of a federal government shutdown are men and women – the military and civil servants – whose service to the country is deemed so essential that they must continue to work without knowing when another paycheck will arrive. Another 800,000 furloughed federal workers may be at home; but like others affected by the shutdown, they too still need to pay their rent or mortgage, honor their financial obligations and take care of children as best they can.

When times are tough financially, a range of predatory lenders seize opportunities to tempt those who are hard-

pressed for cash with interest rates on loans that would make a bookie blush. When a loan of only a few hundred dollars comes with interest payments that double or triple the cash borrowed, predatory lenders are ready to exploit those with few or no financial options.

Those who are unpaid or underemployed – those who are working but failing to earn a salary comparable to their education and training, student loan repayments can take a financial backseat to housing, utilities, or other daily living needs.

At press deadline, the federal shutdown was approaching the 1995 shutdown record of 21 days.

In 1967 Dr. King advised his Stanford University audience, “Somewhere we must come to see that social progress never rolls in on the wheels of inevitability. It comes through the tireless efforts and the persistent work of dedicated individuals…. And so, we must help time, and we must realize that the time is always right to do right.”

This year, may we all honor Dr. King and do our respective efforts to make America live up to its promise of opportunity for all.

Forgeries of Black Art on the Rise

Talented individuals, including Charles White, Elizabeth Catlett, Jacob Lawrence, Romare Bearden and others, stood above the industry prior to the 1980s while the Harlem Renaissance, AfriCOBRA, and other black art movements were the last of the noted revolutions in African American art.

am seeing fakes attributed to all of them,” New York-based gallerist Rosenfeld told the newspaper.

Propelling the fakes market is the fact that many of these artists were overlooked or undervalued in their lifetimes, so scholarship and expertise in their work is limited. “You simply can’t go back to the source any more, and there is only a handful of people who worked firsthand with a lot of these artists while they were alive,” Rosenfield said.

“Forgers know they can capitalize on that.”

For artist Jonathan Green, who owns the popular Jonathan Green Studios in Charleston, S.C., forgeries are of little surprise. “In my 40-year career, I’ve run into more fraud than you can shake a stick at,” Green said. “Fraud has been around since the beginning of time.”

Because African American artists are now appreciated, there’s a high-value placed on their work and that keeps the fraudsters working overtime, Green said. Also, because black artists have historically been overlooked, so-called art experts are ignorant to many great originals, he said.

“A lot of people are capitalizing on this and, in some cases, the fault lies with the museums and the cultural centers because they’re not sophisticated enough to know about these artists,” Green said.

Additionally, as noted in The ART, some of the artists whose works are being forged, like Jacob Lawrence, have estates and foundations which should make it easier to authenticate the works.

However, foundations just aren’t doing this work anymore because they can’t afford to, said Bridget Moore of New York’s DC Moore gallery, which represents AfricanAmerican artists including David Driskell, and Lawrence.

For this reason, Moore says she has always kept detailed “fake files” on all of her artists.

Some of the recent forgeries include a 2011 case where Louisiana artist William Toye and his wife, Berry, pleaded guilty to charges of fraud after conspiring with a New Orleans-based dealer over the course of nearly 40 years to sell dozens of works painted by Toye and fraudulently signed as Clementine Hunter, an African-American artist who died in 1988. Hunter was self-taught and arguably one of the most significant artists to come out of Louisiana, according to the FBI special agent Randy Deaton, who led the three-year-long investigation.

“It was a remarkable case because she was a folk artist,” Deaton told The ART. “She was well known, but there wasn’t an authoritative archive on her career,” which made it easier for Toye to pass off his own paintings as hers.

One of the things that gave away the forgeries was the presence of cat hairs on some canvases, the conservator and forgery specialist James Martin, who consulted on the case, told the newspaper.

Currently the director of scientific research at Sotheby’s, Martin is the founder of Orion Analytical, which was acquired by the auction house in 2016.

Ultimately though, it was the sheer number of forged works attributed to Hunter by the Toyes that gave Martin a substantial sample size, enabling him to find the forgeries.

“Generally speaking, problems with forgeries become easier to spot when seen in large numbers,” he said.

Concerns about the authenticity of several works

GOP Leader Vows Action Over Race R ­ emarks

By HOPE YEN Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) _ The House Republican leader said Sunday he will meet with Rep. Steve King this week to discuss King's future and role in the party and promised action following the Iowa congressman's recent comments in defense of white supremacy.

“That language has no place in America. That is not the America I know and it's most definitely not the party of Lincoln,” said House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif. “Action will be taken. I'm having a serious conversation with congressman Steve King.”

King was quoted in The New York Times last week as saying, “White nationalist, white supremacist, Western civilization _ how did that language become offensive?” King has insisted he is an advocate for “Western civilization,” not white supremacy or white nationalism.

He said it was a “mistake” to use phrasing that “created an unnecessary controversy” and denied being racist.

McCarthy, who appeared on CBS' “Face the Nation,” told host Margaret Brennan after the cameras were turned off that he is reviewing whether King, now serving his ninth

term, should keep his committee assignments, according to CBS' transcript of the broadcast.

King serves on the Agriculture, Small Business and Judiciary committees, and chairs Judiciary's subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said “we'll be acting on that” when she was asked about King last week.

She did not elaborate.

King's comments ignited a firestorm, drawing condemnation from the top three House Republican leaders. GOP Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina, who is African-American, aired his disapproval in a newspaper opinion column.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Kamala D. Harris re-introduced the Ensuring Diverse Leadership Act, legislation to ensure that at least one minority and one female candidate are interviewed for each vacancy for the presidency of a reserve bank at each of the twelve reserve banks in the Fed (San Francisco, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Richmond, Atlanta, Chicago, St. Louis, Minneapolis, Kansas City, and Dallas).

Of the more than 130 individuals who have served as presidents of the twelve reserve banks, only 3 have been non-white.

In 2017, Raphael Bostic became the first African American reserve bank president when he became president of the Atlanta Fed. Senator Kamala Harris Additionally, there have been only seven women to ever serve as a reserve bank president.

“Bringing greater diversity to the Federal Reserve will ensure that more perspectives are heard as major decisions are being made about our nation’s economic future and will

produce better outcomes for the American people,” said Senator Harris. “We must do more to ensure that this country’s leadership reflects the people they serve—not just at the Federal Reserve, but across all levels of government.”

In addition to ensuring diverse candidates are interviewed for the position of president, the bill would also require that reserve banks submit a report to the Senate Banking Committee, the House Financial Services Committee, and the Office of the Inspector General of the Federal Reserve System within 60 days of filling a vacancy for a presidency detailing how many candidates were considered and providing demographic information on them. The bill would also make technical corrections to the Federal Reserve Act to replace the term “Chairman” with the term “Chair.”

The Diverse Leadership Act is influenced by the National Football League’s “Rooney Rule,” which was established in 2003 to boost diversity among the league’s head coaching positions. The adoption of this policy has more than doubled the number of NFL coaches of color in the first twelve seasons of its use, when compared to the first twelve seasons beforehand.

The Ensuring Diverse Leadership Act is co-sponsored

by U.S. Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), Cory Booker (D-NJ), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA).

This bill is the Senate companion to legislation introduced by Representative Joyce Beatty (OH-3) in the House. Senator Harris originally introduced the Ensuring Diverse Leadership Act during the 115th Congress.

Commemorating 400 Years of Africans in America

“Artists in the ’70s and ’80s like Curtis Mayfield wrote about and sang about the centuries we have spent in this country – our advances and setbacks, our triumphs and defeats, times of rejoicing and our times of struggle,” said Ekundayo Bandele, founder of the Hattiloo Technical Theatre Center.

“Some talked about the 400 years we’ve been here in America, and now, we really are here. It has been 400 years since the first enslaved Africans came to the New World – in 1619. This is our time for remembering how far we’ve come.

This year is our quadricentennial.”

Quadricentennial? So, didn’t know that was a thing? It is.

Just as “bicentennial” is the 200th anniversary of an event, the “quadricentennial” is defined by Merriam-Webster as “a 400th anniversary or its celebration.”

So yeah, it’s really a thing.

Historical sources record the first Africans arriving in the American colonies during the latter part of August. There were some “20-odd” Africans, brought here as indentured servants. Less than a decade later, fully enslaved Africans arrived on the dreaded “Middle Passage.”

The Hattiloo will commemorate the African-American experience in “Lest We Forget,” an eight-month-long commemoration, from January to August. Each month, an interactive event is planned to reflect “the Black Experience” in America. The first event will be a Jan. 28 screening of the Academy Award-winning epic “12 Years A Slave.”

“I want these scheduled events to reflect and celebrate our people, our culture, and our remembrances,” said Bandele.

“I began my own journey in September when I realized that the 400th year was coming up, and we need to collectively recall those occurrences which have brought us thus far,” he added. “I want it to be all about us, but others are certainly welcome to come and share these experiences with us.”

Lest We Forget:

The Hattiloo will commemorate the African-American experience in “Lest We Forget,” an eight-month-long commemoration, from January to August. Each month, an interactive event is planned to reflect “the Black Experience” in America.

Through continuous dialogue and discussion, all eight events create interactive conversations with each other and Hattiloo staffers.

“I talked to many of my friends across the country who lead cultural ventures, and they won’t be observing

the quadricentennial,” But this is a big deal. The Bible talks about 400 years of bondage, and then deliverance would come. Jews make that connection as they suffered slavery in Egypt. This is our 400-year mark. It’s definitely a big deal.”

Bandele has uniquely directed each event to cover some

aspect of African-American past. Two films, “12 Years A Slave” and “Sankofa,” both take a painful look back into the degradation and indignities suffered by those enslaved.

Dramatic readings of actual slave narratives by actors will give voice to freed slaves who recorded their recollections of life on the plantation before emancipation. Brought to life on the stage, audiences will return to the past and relive their experiences. A scheduled concert will take the audience on a journey through time with the soulful evolution of the “Black Experience.”

Speakers from three religious sects—Christian, Islam, and Yoruba—will be featured on a panel to define what faith has meant to African-Americans through the years. But the most poignant and, perhaps, most widely anticipated is the “Lay-In.” “The Lay-In is going to be powerful,” said Bandele. “We will lie on the floor, shoulder-to-shoulder to connect with the experience of being packed in like animals on a slave ship. As the connection is made to the Middle Passage—the stench, the death, the horror—there will be tears. That pain still runs so deep within our people. There will be tears as we cry for our foreparents who had to endure it. The LayIn will call up all of those emotions. Everyone is invited to take part, not just black people. It is a part of our American experience.”

This Thursday, the theatre will post a dramatic listing in front of the timeline of African peoples brought to America, from the very first in 1619 up to this present day.

Doc Threatens to Expose Michael Jackson as Child Predator

Kelly,” shed more light on the alleged crimes of the R&B crooner, a new film about Michael Jackson threatens to do the same to the late “Thriller” singer.

The Wrap reports that the 2019 Sundance Film Festival has added a documentary that will focus on two men: (presumably) choreographer Wade Robson and James Safechuck, who say they were sexually abused by Michael Jackson.

Following Jackson’s death in 2009, Robson, who has worked with Brittney Spears, NYSNC* and others filed a lawsuit against the “Thriller” singer’s estate claiming that handlers of the superstar essentially helped run a child-sex ring.

Robson claimed in a lawsuit, that was later tossed because a California judge said he waited too late to file, that Jackson raped him.

Safechuck, who at 7-years-old was befriended by Jackson and traveled extensively with the singer, also sued Jackson’s estate.

While neither Robson nor Safechuck previously made complaints, Robson testified in Jackson’s defense at the singer’s 2005 trial which resulted in an acquittal for Jackson who was charged with 13 counts of molesting a teen cancer patient.

Jackson had always maintained his innocence.

However, many have argued that Jackson admittedly settled at least three multimillion claims made by prepubescent boys and their families. A sheriff’s deputy at his 2005 trial claimed that, when factoring in settlement cash, attorney’s fees, private investigator costs and other fees, Jackson spent more than $200 million to quiet abuse allegations.

CNN reported on Wednesday, that R. Kelly’s former manager, James Mason, has been accused of threatening to kill the father of Jocelyn Savage, one of the women featured in the documentary. The case was presented to a Magistrate Judge who issued a warrant in July, citing “terroristic threats and acts.”

It was that theme that helped attorney Tom Mesereau successfully defend Jackson in his 2005 case in California.

Mesereau famously referred to the accuser and his family as “grifters,” looking for a handout.

No one in the Jackson camp returned messages on Wednesday.

It should be noted that the accuser in that case has always maintained he was molested and, despite financial hardships, his family never attempted to sue Jackson.

The accuser went on to graduate college and get married.

Ironically, Robson who defended Jackson in 2005, said it was only after he had gotten married and had a child of his own that he began to come to terms with what Jackson had done to him years earlier.

“I have never forgotten one moment of what Michael did to me,” Robson told the Today Show in 2013. “But, I was psychologically and emotionally completely unable and unwilling to understand that it was sexual abuse.”

Netflix Raising Prices for 58M US Subscribers

By MICHAEL LIEDTKE AP Technology Writer SAN FRANCISCO (AP) _ Netflix is raising its U.S. prices by 13 percent to 18 percent, its biggest increase since the company launched its video streaming service 12 years ago.

Its most popular plan will see the largest hike, to $13 per month from $11. That option offers high-definition streaming on up to two different internet-connected devices simultaneously. Even at the higher price, that plan is still a few dollars cheaper than HBO, whose streaming service charges $15 per month.

The extra cash will help to pay for Netflix's huge investment in original shows and films and finance the heavy debt it has assumed to ward off rivals such as Amazon, Disney and AT&T. While subscribers may bemoan a bigger monthly bill Wall Street cheered, sending shares up more than 6 percent in midday trading.

This marks the fourth time that Netflix has raised its U.S. prices; the last hike came in late 2017 . But this is the first time that higher prices will hit all 58 million U.S. subscribers, the number Netflix reported at the end of September.

Previously, Netflix had continued to offer a basic, $8-a-month streaming plan while raising rates on more comprehensive plans with better video quality and options to watch simultaneously on different devices.

This time, the price for the cheapest plan is going up to $9 per month. A premium plan offering ultra-high definition will jump to $16 per month from $14.

The new prices will immediately affect all new subscribers and then roll out to existing customers during the next three months. Customers in about 40 Latin America countries where Netflix bills in U.S. currency will also be affected, excepting key international markets such as Mexico and Brazil.

Netflix had nearly 79 million subscribers outside the U.S. as of September.

Higher prices could alienate subscribers and possibly even trigger a wave of cancelations. For instance, Netflix faced a huge backlash in 2011 when it unbundled video

streaming from its older DVD-by-mail service, resulting in a 60 percent price increase for subscribers who wanted to keep both plans. Netflix lost 600,000 subscribers _ about 2 percent of its total customers at the time _ after that switch.

The company is now betting it can gradually raise its prices, bolstered by a string of acclaimed hits during that past five years that have included “House of Cards,” “Orange Is The New Black,” “Stranger Things,” “The Crown” and, most recently, the film “Bird Box.” “We change pricing from time to time as we continue investing in great entertainment and improving the overall Netflix experience,” the company said in a statement.

Consumers also have an increasing array of other streaming options .

Amazon offers a streaming service as part of its Prime shipping program for $13 per month, or $120 for an annual membership. Hulu sells an ad-free service for $12 per month. AT&T's WarnerMedia unit plans a broader streaming service this year centered on HBO. Walt Disney is gearing up to launch a streaming channel this year With Apple also widely expected to join the videostreaming fray, the competition for programming is enabling top directors, writers and actors to charge more for their talents. That has intensified financial pressure on Netflix, which hasn't been bringing in enough money to pay for all its programming and other business expenses.

The company burned through about $3 billion last year and is expecting to do so again this year. To offset the negative cash flow, Netflix has been borrowing heavily to pay for programming. The Los Gatos, California, company had accumulated nearly $12 billion in debt before borrowing another $2 billion in an October bond offering.

Concerns about the stiffening competition and Netflix's ability to sustain its current leadership in video streaming have caused the company's stock price to plummet from peak of $423.21 reached last June.

Investors reacted enthusiastically to Tuesday's news, signaling their belief that the price increase won't significantly slow Netflix's subscriber growth.

The company's stock surged 6.5 percent to $354.79 in Tuesday's early afternoon trading.

Lawler Named CA Sportscaster of the Year

The National Sports Media Association (NSMA) today announced that the legendary “Voice of the Clippers” Ralph Lawler has been voted by his peers as the 2018 California Sportscaster of the Year. Lawler is in his 40th season with the Clippers and will retire at the end of the season. His call can be heard on Prime Ticket/Fox Sports San Diego.

Lawler will be honored alongside all of this year’s NSMA award winners during the 60th annual NSMA Awards Weekend, June 22-24, 2019 in Winston-Salem, N.C. “I’m thankful to the NSMA for recognizing me with this award, to the Clippers and FOX Sports, and most importantly, to all of Clipper Nation for tuning in to see and hear me call 40 years of Clippers games,” said Lawler.

“It’s an honor to be celebrated by my peers during my final season. Oh me, oh my, it’s been quite a ride.”

One of the NBA’s longest-tenured broadcasters, Lawler, 80, joined the then San Diego Clippers in the team’s first year in California, 1978, where he spent six years before moving with the Clippers to Los Angeles.

Since, he has called more than 3,100 games. Lawler has distinguished himself as one of the broadcasting industry’s elite, as he is one of a very few announcers who has called games in each of the four major U.S. Sports Leagues: NFL (Chargers), MLB (Phillies), NHL (Flyers) and NBA (Clippers and 76ers).

He has called more than 3,140 Clippers games in 91 cities and six countries. In addition to the California Sportscaster of the Year honor, Lawler’s commitment to his craft has been recognized with a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, three Emmys, a Telly Award and inductions into the Southern California Sports Broadcasters Hall of Fame and the California Sports Hall of Fame. Lawler’s extensive resume dates to his high school days in his hometown of Peoria, Illinois, where he first started calling

games.

Over the past decades he has invented numerous “Lawler-isms” that have become a fixture in Clippers broadcasts and across the NBA. Fans watching Clippers games expect to hear a number of his catchphrases, including “Bingo!” for made three-pointers, or his signature, “Oh Me, Oh My” after highlight plays. Throughout the league, his colleagues frequently reference “Lawler’s Law,” which states that the team that reaches 100 points first will win the game.

The impact that Lawler has had on the Clippers organization and the broadcasting community across his four decades with the team is immeasurable. Lawler’s career is longer than the lifetimes of eight NBA franchises and he has been the Voice of the Clippers through seven U.S. Presidents and three NBA Commissioners. Familiar faces from the Clippers’ past and present are paying tribute to Lawler in his final season by joining him to provide game commentary throughout the season.

Longtime Clippers fan and season ticket holder Billy Crystal will join him to call the team’s January 31 game against the Lakers on Fox Sports Prime Ticket. Current Nets analyst Mike Fratello will join Lawler on January 23 in Miami and Basketball Hall of Famer Hubie Brown will add commentary for the Clippers’ March 24 game against the New York Knicks.

The Clippers will conclude the regular season by hosting Ralph Lawler Night at Staples Center on Wednesday, April 10 at 7:30 p.m. vs. the Utah Jazz. Not only did the main event live up to expectations, the rising stars in their undercard amazed boxing fans in attendance along with those who tuned into FOX on Sunday night.

Kicking off a great night of fights for the Premier Boxing Champions Prelims on FS1 were three exciting bouts which all ended in exciting fashion.

Having not fought since 2017 Guillermo Rigondeaux returned to the ring against Giovanni Delgado Rigondeaux ended the fight with a knockout in the last second of round one with an overhand left their Super Bantamweights bout.

“This is my division. This is my time. This is it. I am the kind of 122 pounds. I felt 100 percent.” Rigondeaux continued on to say, “Delgado is a good fighter. I take my

hat off to him and his team. I came prepared and I am ready to face people that are undefeated. Whoever has a belt, I am taking it. You can expect me back in less than two months.”

“I fought my idol tonight,” said Delgado. “I knew he hit hard, but I didn’t know he hit that hard. I have been cleared by the doctor and am fine. Just a little bit in shock.”

Mexican Olympian Lindolfo Delgado continued his professional knockout streak by knocking out Sergio Lopez in the third round. Clearly the aggressor throughout the fight, Delgado landed almost 50 percent of his power punches.

Light heavyweight Egypt’s Ahmed Elbiali took on veteran Allan Green. Despite Elbiali’s aggression, Green choose to go toe-to-toe with Elbiali. Green was then knocked down in every round knock by Elbiali. Ultimately, it was a right uppercut followed by an overhand right from Elbiali that ended the fight.

“I was easier than I thought it was going to be,” said Elbiali. “Losing to Pascal the way I did, it messes with you mentally. I was trying to stay on my A-game. Stay focused and thankfully it showed. My game plan clicked really well. I have been sparring with Caleb (Plant) and other great guys. That keeps you sharp and alert. I would love to win a world title and be the first Egyptian win a world championship.”

In the main event, IBF Super Middleweight World Championship and Venezuelan native Jose Uzcategui put his titled on the line against Nashville, Tennessee native Caleb Plant. As expected, this fight disappointed no-one who watched this fight. Uzcategui was a valiant champion in his defense of his championship. However, Caleb Plant entered the ring with a heavy heart, having recently lost his daughter at 19 months young from a respiratory infection which developed into pneumonia.

Carrying this heavy heart into the ring on Sunday, Plant controlled most of the fight though Uzcategui displayed the heart of a champion by not backing down one bit. Even after getting up from a couple knockdowns, Uzcategui continued to come forward and apply pressure. Though Plant took some punishment, he was able to drop the older Uzcategui for only the third time in his career, with his vicious assortment of punches to the head and body.

Having controlled most of the fight Plant was looking to survive the final rounds of the fight knowing Uzcategui needed a knockdown to hold onto his Championship Belt.

As the scores of 116-110 were read twice and 115-111 once the… the announcer held a silent pause before revealing “and the new…!” The freshly crowned champion Caleb Pant fell to his knees overcome with emotion when he heard the announcement, he’d won the bout.

“I’ve worked my whole entire life for this,” said Plant.

“I buried my daughter in the process of trying to get this belt. I promised I would bring her this title and that is what I am going to do.” “I knew I caught him clean during those knockdowns, but I knew he wasn’t all the way out so I took

my time. I stayed relaxed, I stuck to the game plan and got it done just like I said I would,” mentioned Caleb. Plant went on the say, “This is overwhelming. I am a kid who came from nothing. I believed in myself and now I’ve been crowned king.” “Right now, I am not thinking ahead. I just want to embrace this moment and soak it in.”

“I expected more movement and more boxing out of him,” said Uzcategui. “I would love the rematch. I think everyone saw a great fight tonight. I gave him the chance at the title and I would hope he would give me the chance to win it back.”

“I did feel that I had the advantage heading into the fight,” continued Uzcategui. “I went down because I was off balance, but I wasn’t hurt. He started to get tired around the sixth round, which was the plan. Caleb knew how to clench and hold. He was smart. He knew how to stay away from the punches.”

Additionally, Brandon Figueroa made quick work of Moises Flores, by knocking him out in the 2nd round in a WBA Super Bantamweight title eliminator. Figueroa discussed the fight and had some words for his next opponent.

“Break him down and finish him,” said Figueroa “This is exactly how I expected it to go. I knew that he wasn’t going to handle those body shots. My message to Daniel Roman is that I am going to go home and prepare.” “I used that bodywork. I am really strong. I came in at 110 percent and did my job. I could have done better. I am really hard on myself. I know there are things I can continue to work on and will do that as soon as I get home. I am most definitely ready for a title shot. I am confident and ready.”

Linden, Mich. native and PBC Prospect of 2018 Joey Spencer added another win and another knockout to his

record with his defeat of Brandon Harder in their super welterweight bout. The 18-year-old Spencer established his jab early and landed it at will. His straight right at the end of round one sent Harder to his knees. Spencer ended the fight with a swarm of punches early in the 2nd round.

“Fans are going to see that I give it my all when I get in the ring and I’m going to put on a show,” said Spencer.

“You’re going to get more and more tests in my career and I believe I will rise to the level of my competition. Sometimes you’re in there with an awkward guy, he proves to be a test.

I’ll move to six rounds for my next fight.”

The Saints have earned the homefield advantage and their fans will no doubt give them the extra encouragement they need to squeak past the Rams and move on to the Super Bowl.

NFL DIVISIONAL PLAYOFFS Review Saturday, January 12, 2018 AFC: 1:35 PM Indianapolis Colts at Kansas City Chiefs With frozen snow on the ground of Arrowhead Stadium, the Kansas City Chiefs ambushed Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts in their Divisional round match up last Saturday afternoon. That Chiefs defense must have been listening to the so-called experts downgrade their chances to win a championship, because of their porous play during the regular season. That defense made sure to show they can do their part to assist the league’s MVP get to a Superbowl in these playoffs.

NFC: 5:15 PM Dallas Cowboys at Los Angeles Rams Though the Cowboys came into this game with the better running game on paper. The unveiled of the Rams 2 headed running attack on Saturday against the Cowboys which just may be the difference maker for the Rams moving forward. Shutting down the Cowboys running game essentially shut down the Cowboys offense the and McVay showed that he could adjust his offense, if need be, to suit the front the defense provides them as they move

forward in the playoffs.

AFC: 10:05 AM Los Angeles Chargers at New England Patriots Coming into this game, Phillip Rivers and the Chargers were 0-7 against the New England Patriots. After this game the Chargers are 0-8 against the Chargers. For whatever reason, the Chargers did not appear to make any

defensive adjustments as the Patriots jumped out to an early 35-7 going into halftime. The Patriots yet again have advanced to the Championship round of the playoffs.

NFC: 1:40 PM Philadelphia Eagles at New Orleans Saints Though the Eagles fought valiantly to defend their title this season and Nick Foles almost lead them to another

AFC: 3:40PM New England Patriots at Kansas City Chiefs For the 8th consecutive season, the New England Patriots are in the Conference Championship playing for another chance to go going to the Superbowl. In their way this season is the Kansas City Chiefs led by a QB who is likely to be named this season’s MVP. Having lost to the Patriots earlier this season I anticipate the Chiefs will avenge this loss by a narrow margin and move on the their first Superbowl appearance since 1969.

This is likely to be an exciting weekend of NFL Football. Each of these games should be a great matchup as these players are one game away from an opportunity to be crowned champions of the football world along with cementing their legacy. Millions in Aid for LAUSD Congresswoman Waters Makes History Congresswoman Maxine Waters is now the first Black and the first woman to chair the powerful House Financial Services Committee. Having served on this committee since 1995, and its Ranking Member in the previous Congress, Waters will set the committee’s agenda in key areas affecting the economy, banking, housing, insurance and securities.

By Charlene Crowell NNPA Newswire Contributor As 2019 begins, there is also a new Congress with leadership in the House of Representatives that makes history for people of color and women alike.

Long-time California Representative Nancy Pelosi returns as Speaker of the House – the first time in 50 years that a Member of Congress has achieved this feat. On a gender note, Speaker Pelosi becomes the most powerful woman on Capitol Hill and the only female in the nation’s history to do so.

There’s also another key woman and legislator that is making history. Congresswoman Maxine Waters is now the first Black and the first woman to chair the powerful House Financial Services Committee. Having served on this committee since 1995, and its Ranking Member in the previous Congress, Waters will set the committee’s agenda in key areas affecting the economy, banking, housing, insurance and securities.

The House Financial Services Committee oversees the activities and responsibilities for major financial regulators, agencies, and the nation’s central bank, the Federal Reserve. These agencies include but are not limited to the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation – that insures monies in depository institutions, as well as the Securities and Exchange Commission that is charged with maintaining fair and efficient investment markets.

In other words, the fiery and bold Black lawmaker who earned a reputation for challenging Wall Street and major lenders during the housing crisis will now set the direction for a range of financial players, regulators, and institutions. From monetary policy to the production and distribution of currency, and expanding financial access to affordable housing options, a progressive and principled committee chair is running the show. She is also expected to set standards of performance that level the financial playing field and hold lenders accountable when they take advantage of consumers or discriminate in their lending.

With the right kind of regulation and committee oversight, the nation may be able to change financial trends that have worsened both racial and gender wealth gaps.

For example, a December 2018 report by the Asset Funder’s Network analyzed racial and gender disparities in wealth and found that Black and Latina women have “lost substantial amounts of wealth in the last two decades”.

From 2007 to 2016, Black women ages 45-65 had a 74 percent drop in median wealth, compared to that of White women who experienced a 28 percent drop. Further, the Asset Funders Network concluded the median “quasiliquid” savings for single Black and Latina women aged 45-50 was $0.

Earlier in 2017 the Federal Reserve found that nearly 1 in 5 black families have zero or negative net worth — twice the rate of white families. Additionally the median net worth of Black families was one-tenth of that held by White families.

These wealth disparities continue to plague communities of color in large part because of disparities in home ownership that enable consumers to build wealth. Year after year, the Home Mortgage Disclosure Act (HMDA) report has consistently found that consumers of color are denied access to mortgages, especially private conventional loans that remain the most sustainable and

affordable loans.

Last year, the Center for Investigative Reporting published its analysis of the most recent HMDA report.

“It found a pattern of troubling denials for people of color across the country, including in major metropolitan areas such as Atlanta, Detroit, Philadelphia, St. Louis and San Antonio,” states the report. “African Americans faced the most resistance in Southern cities – Mobile, Alabama; Greenville, North Carolina; and Gainesville, Florida – and Latinos in Iowa City, Iowa.”

A second but equally harmful trend is predatory lending that targets these same consumers with highcost credit that creates debt traps. When consumers find themselves short of cash before paydays, overdraft fees, payday and car title loans are among the most predatory due to their extremely high interest rates and failure to consider whether borrowers have the financial capacity to repay the loans without taking on additional debt.

For all of Black America, as well as consumer advocates and others who believe financial fairness should be the nation’s watchword, an expectation of a new era of accountability, access and transparency is hoped to soon unfold.

“She is a tough and savvy defender of consumer protection and holds the feet of the banks and the Trump administration regulators to the fire,” said Mike Calhoun, president of the Center for Responsible Lending in a recent interview.

Should anyone doubt the resolve of Congresswoman Waters, consider her reaction last fall when she and other prominent progressives faced a series of bomb threats and other violence.

“We have to keep doing what we’re doing in order to make this country right,” Waters told the Washington Post.

“That’s what I intend to do. And as the young people say, ‘I ain’t scared.’”

Amid a continuing teacher strike, the Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a motion by Supervisors Mark Ridley-Thomas and Hilda Solis that would identify millions in Los Angeles County funds that could be directed to the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) to enhance healthcare for students.

“Among the concerns raised by teachers is the need for more support services for students and, with this motion, we are doing what we can to be helpful,” said Supervisor Ridley-Thomas, a former high school teacher himself. “LA County has sufficient resources and this is part of fulfilling our mandate to provide medical services to the most vulnerable.”

The motion seeks to build on the infrastructure and resources that LA County already provides LAUSD, which includes dozens of school-based health centers, as well as mental health clinicians, crisis intervention training for teachers, and counseling for families. LA County is also currently working to build dozens of wellbeing centers in high schools to support teenage students’ social and emotional wellness and sexual health.

Specifically, the motion instructed the LA County Department of Mental Health (DMH) to identify up to $10 million in potential funding to enhance mental health and wellbeing at LAUSD schools. The amount would make it possible to fund a healthcare professional on every elementary school campus five days a week. Research has shown that the sooner children experiencing trauma or distress can access professional treatment and support, the higher their likelihood to succeed academically, and develop resilience and effective coping mechanisms.

“The mental health and wellbeing of our kids, schools, and neighborhoods must always be front and center,” DMH Director Dr. Jonathan Sherin said. “We empower our future by identifying and addressing needs early and broadly through services at our school platforms. We are currently invested in a strong partnership with LAUSD, and this motion takes our commitment to a whole new level.”

The motion also instructed the County’s Departments of Health Services (DHS) and Public Health (DPH) to, within 30 days, identify strategies for supporting LAUSD in its efforts to hire school nurses and other health professionals.

“As a former high school principal, I know the importance of ensuring a healthy environment in our schools and DPH stands strongly in support of LAUSD,” DPH Director Dr. Barbara Ferrer said. “Teachers, nurses, counselors, and parents all play a vital role in supporting our children and helping them become all they can be.”

LA County Office of Education (LACOE) Superintendent Debra Duardo, who recently assigned a team of fiscal experts to look into LAUSD’s worsening financial situation, said, “LACOE has long recognized that we cannot allow the unmet mental health needs of children and youth to stand in the way of their access to a great education.”

“As we continue to work with LAUSD on fiscal and operational health, we are encouraged by the leadership of Supervisors Ridley-Thomas and Solis in recognizing the compelling need for funding for mental health services,” she added. “We look forward to continuing our collaborative efforts to ensure that every District in the County is equipped to support the social-emotional and mental health needs of our youth.”

Courtney Powers with the Community Clinic Association of LA County, which represents several operators of school-based health centers, also supported the motion. She said, “Our health centers are places of trust in the community and schools are too, so this is a terrific opportunity to expand reach to students and families in need.”

“When the physical, emotional and psychological needs of children are met, we all benefit from their ability to focus on learning,” said Michael Green, LA County Regional Director for SEIU Local 721. “If, through this investment, we increase the wellness and learning ability of a child, then we are making a positive change for their future, and the future of our community.”

Myths About Radon 2nd Leading Cause Lung Cancer

LOS ANGELES (January 16, 2019) – Radon is a naturally occurring gas that hides invisibly in homes, yet is the nation’s second-leading cause of lung cancer. This January, during Radon Action Month, American Lung Association is raising awareness about radon and addressing common myths around this deadly gas.

“Hidden in far too many homes is the nation’s secondleading cause of lung cancer, radon. Lung cancer remains the nation’s leading cause of cancer deaths, so people need to be aware of and take action on radon,” said William Barrett, Director of Clean Air Advocacy for American Lung Association in California. “The good news is that testing for and reducing the high radon levels is straightforward and effective. The Lung Association encourages all families, schools and daycares to test for radon to protect everyone’s health and save lives.”

Radon has been found in every county in California with several areas on the Central Coast registering potential elevated levels. Please help us bust these common myths about radon: Myth #1: Radon is not really harmful.

Fact: Not only is radon invisible, it’s also radioactive.

While you can’t see it, exposure to high levels of radon over time can cause lung cancer, and radon ranks as the nation’s second-leading cause of the disease. Radon-related lung cancers are responsible for an estimated 21,000 deaths every year in the United States.

Myth #2: Radon is rare and doesn’t impact our community.

Fact: The reality is that radon is found at dangerous levels in an estimated 1 in 15 homes nationwide. Your home

can have elevated levels of radon while your neighbor’s home does not. It doesn’t matter in what part of the country you live, because radon comes from rock and soil, it can be found anywhere. It then enters the home or building through cracks in walls, basement floors, foundations and other openings, and can exist at dangerous levels indoors.

Myth #3: Testing for radon is expensive.

Fact: The only way to detect dangerous levels of radon in your home is to test the air. Various forms of do-ityourself test kits are simple to use, inexpensive and can be purchased online or at home improvement and hardware stores. Professional testing is also available, often for under $300, although the price varies by location and building size. Schools and daycares may need professional help to do the testing.

Myth #4: Our schools are safe.

Fact: Testing for radon in schools is not required in most states, nor is fixing the problem. Not only children, but teachers and other staff who work in schools can be exposed to dangerous levels of radon. The last nationwide survey of radon levels in schools, completed in 1993, found that nearly one in five schools had at least one classroom with dangerous levels of radon. The American Lung Association leads a coalition of groups working to highlight the importance of testing for radon in both schools and daycares through the National Radon Action Plan. In 2014, federal actions have already reached an estimated 1.6 million homes, schools and childcare facilities with guidance and incentives to reduce radon risk and have tested for and mitigated high radon risk when necessary in nearly 200,000 units.

Film & Arts Festival to Screen Aretha Franklin’s Amazing Grace Concert January 15, 2019 (Los Angeles, CA) -- The Pan African Film & Arts Festival announced that it will celebrate its 27th Annual Opening Night with a screening of Aretha Franklin’s cherished Amazing Grace concert documentary at the Directors Guild of America. The festival, which presents an impressive slate of over 170 new Black films from the US and around the world and exhibits more than 100 fine artists and unique craftspeople, starts on Thursday, February 7 through Monday, February 18 at the Cinemark Rave 15 Theatres (3650 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd) and the adjacent Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza in LosAngeles, California. Aretha Franklin’s spinetingling and uplifting Amazing Grace, produced by Alan Elliott, was originally directed by Sydney Pollack in 1972 at New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles, California. The film, a rare gem in the crown of the late musical genius, has not been seen before now due to technical and rights issues.
