Five Ways California Small Businesses Can Champion Energy Efficiency
“Our dad, Dr. Herbert Oye (fourth from left), is a Nigerian immigrant. Upon moving to the United States, he attended medical school and has worked tirelessly to build his own Vascular Surgery practice,” the young physicians wrote in a statement on Facebook.
By Stacy M. Brown NNPA Newswire Senior Correspondent Dr. Herbert Oye is a Board Certified Endovascular and Vascular Surgeon, specializing in invasive and non-invasive treatment of vascular diseases. Dr. Oye received his medical degree at the University of North Texas Health Science Center, according to his official biography. His General Surgery residence was performed at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY, an affiliate of Albert Einstein Medical Center. Dr. Oye completed his fellowship training in advanced vascular and endovascular surgery at the Arizona Heart Institute in Phoenix, Arizona.
Perhaps, most impressive is that each of Dr. Oye’s four children followed in their father’s footsteps. David, Monique, Michelle, and Melissa Oye, each said they were inspired by their father and all have become doctors. “Our dad, Dr. Herbert Oye, is a Nigerian immigrant. Upon moving to the United States, he attended medical school and has worked tirelessly to build his own Vascular Surgery practice,” the young physicians wrote in a statement on Facebook. “Dad has since opened a hospital back in Nigeria and splits his time between the United States and Nigeria. We are all currently in the medical field as a second, third, and fourth year medical student and a first year Internal Med-
icine Resident.” Each are attending or have attended the West Virginia School of Medicine. Monique, the eldest of the family, graduated in 2018. Michelle is in her fourth year, while Melissa is in her third year. David, the only son of Dr. Oye, is in his second year. Their success has social media buzzing. “Sending congratulations to your amazing family of wonderful world citizens,” Kathryn Stollmeyer Wright, wrote on Facebook. Another Facebook user, Patricia Combs, wrote: “Well done. Congratulations for excellence in your drive, motivation, and ability to accomplish such great and momentous feat. You all are wonderful and blessed,” Combs stated.
Civil Rights Icon Diagnosed With Cancer By Lauren Victoria Burke NNPA Newswire Contributor “I am going to fight it,” read a statement from Rep. John Lewis on the evening of December 29. “I may miss a few votes during this period, but with God’s grace I will be back on the front lines soon,” he added. Lewis announced on the last week of 2019 that he has been diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer. The news sent shock waves through the political community on the left and right and prompted many to reflect on what Lewis’ life has added to American history. “While I am clear-eyed about the prognosis, doctors have told me that recent medical advances have made this type of cancer treatable in many cases, that treatment options are no longer as debilitating as they once were, and that I have a fighting chance,” Lewis continued in his statement. The Georgia Congressman and civil rights icon was first elected to Georgia’s Fifth Congressional District in 1986. In a year that sadly saw the end of the lives of Congressional Black Caucus co-founder John Conyers of Michigan and revered Baltimore Congressman Elijah Cummings, Lewis’ diagnosis was particularly jarring. At a time when the country is in need of moral authority many reflected on the diagnosis as a wake-up call. “John Lewis is one of our great American heroes who reshaped our American Dream into one billions more, at home and abroad, finally felt included them also. His is a priceless gift which leaves us forever in his debt. It’s been said that honest public service is the rent we pay to live in America. He pays his rent better than most everyone else and, hopefully, will remain in Congress long after he beats this cancer, no easy thing as he knows. His guts as a college student inspired me to integrate the campus elective politics of my college and later to help Wilder when no one else in VA who looked like me would. In a country struggling to make Dr. King’s a reality for so many far too long, we Continued on page A2

Parolee will Face Murder Trial in Stabbing
18-year-old Nia Wilson was stabbed to death in an attack on her and her sister.
OAKLAND, CA (AP) – A judge has ruled that a 29-year-old parolee with a history of mental illness is mentally fit to stand trial for the slaying of a woman on an Oakland subway platform. Alameda County Superior Court Judge James Cramer said Tuesday that John Lee Cowell will face trial starting in January for the unprovoked stabbing death of 18-yearold Nia Wilson in July 2018, KPIX-TV reported. Cowell has been charged with murder and attempted murder for the attack on Wilson and her sister, Letifah, 26, who was wounded in the attack. The trial had been in legal limbo as authorities sought to determine Cowell’s mental competence. At a hearing Monday, Cramer said Cowell was not cooperating with doctors appointed last month to evaluate him, for the latest
in a series of evaluations. The judge said he understood Cowell has a history of mental illness but that doctors who had previously examined him felt he was “malingering’’ to avoid standing trial. The judge recessed the hearing, saying he needed 24 hours to reach his decision. He announced his ruling Tuesday. Wilson’s death was one of several violent or fatal attacks on Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) lines that connect San Francisco to the cities of Berkeley, Oakland and others. BART has announced new safety measures and installed thousands of security cameras as part of an effort to increase safety. Prosecutors have said they will seek a life sentence against Cowell and are investigating if he was motivated by racial hate when he killed Wilson. The women are black, and he is white.

December 30, 2019, Los Angeles -- As the new year begins, many small businesses are evaluating existing operations to determine how to become more efficient. There are actions small-business owners can take all year round to take control of their energy use. By acting to save and use energy more efficiently, small-business owners can boost more than just their bottom line. Being energy efficient in the workplace will increase productivity and help keep California golden for generations to come. Being energy efficient doesn’t mean making big workplace investments either. Small actions taken at work can add up to yield big results. Energy Upgrade California, the statewide initiative inspiring residents and small-business owners to use energy better, has tips on how small businesses across the state can be more energy efficient: Get an energy audit. Requesting an energy assessment from your local energy provider can help identify any opportunities to save energy and money. Start unplugging. Even when your office equipment is turned off, it is still using electricity when plugged in, which can add up to 20 percent of your energy bill. Consider unplugging decorative signage, window displays and video displays when not in use. Take the power back. Use a power strip for your office equipment such as computer monitors and printers. This will help reduce phantom loads when you are away — and save you up to $100 per year. Don’t forget to turn the strip off when you’re headed home for the day. Banish the workplace-shivers. You can save an extra 10 percent on annual heating and cooling costs by installing programmable thermostats that will regulate the temperature of your building or space, so you don’t have to. Even setting it one degree lower than you normally would will help to save energy. Keep everyone breathing easy. While the lifespan of an air filter can vary from product to product, it’s important to regularly check your air filters. A dirty air filter makes the HVAC system work harder and reduces air flow. Help your HVAC system run more efficiently by simply swapping your air filters.
