15 Black Men From Chicago Made History When All Charges Against Them Were Simultaneously Dropped

Black men have long been victims of false arrests, false charges and police brutality. However, back in November 2017, fifteen African American men from Chicago made history when the Cook County State’s Attorney in Illinois dismissed all charges against them. All of them had been convicted for drug crimes that local police framed them for from 2003 to 2008.

And this was the first time in history that that many Black men had been simultaneously exonerated from crimes they didn’t

commit. That’s right... Their convictions were overturned!

In a press conference that followed, the men alleged that a former police sergeant and his team of officers from the Chicago Police Department planted the drugs on them, and then took things even further by falsifying police reports.

Joshua Tepfer, an attorney with the Exoneration Project at the University of Chicago, said that the police officers repeatedly

targeted low income Black men who lived in South Side housing projects. Others in command at the Chicago Police Department reportedly knew what was going on, but did not do anything to stop it.

Sadly, justice was not fully served to the corrupt officers.

Two of them were convicted and served about two years in prison, and as many as seven others were never charged and continued to work on the force.

States around the country are rushing to restore the net neutrality rules developed under President Obama and rolled back by the Trump Administration. However as they say, “the devil is in the details.”

Senator Weiner’s legislation, SB 822, would attempt to restore internet connection safeguards for Californians that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) reversed, but would do so at your expense by shifting the cost from wealthy internet providers to consumers. This is particularly concerning because it hurts those who can least afford an increase in their internet bills, expands the current wealth inequity, and impedes access to technology.

The original goal of “net neutrality” was that internet service providers and governments would treat all data on the internet equally and not discriminate or charge differently based on the

user, services, website, application, or device – in other words, it would provide an open internet.

However, one of the bill’s provisions would ban popular free data offers, like streaming movies and music that do not count against data plans. These free data plans, also known as zero-rated plans, are discounts used by millions of consumers to stream popular online content like video or music. Data shows that this act disproportionately hurts poor to middle-income earners who have a significantly higher reliance their smartphone as their only form of internet access.

These consumers will get hit with higher monthly costs when they exceed their data caps, or they’ll have to throttle their own internet use. The problem is that consumers rely on their internet access to get jobs and healthcare information and whether consumers pay an extra $10, $15, or $20 per month, it’s not affordable for many low-income people. Shot Fired but Rapper Chief Keef Not Hit at New York Hotel

NEW YORK (AP) - Authorities say a shot was fired at a New York City hotel near Chief Keef, but the Chicago rapper wasn’t hit.

New York police say the shot was fired outside the W Hotel in midtown Manhattan around 4:40 a.m. Saturday. They couldn’t say whether 22-year-old Chief Keef, whose real name is Keith Farrelle Cozart, was the target.

A message left with Chief Keef ’s agent Ira Goldenring seeking comment or further details wasn’t immediately returned.

NASA Mathematician Katherine Johnson Being Honored in Bronze

INSTITUTE, W.Va. (AP) - Katherine Johnson, the NASA mathematician whose calculations helped astronauts return to Earth, is being honored at her alma mater with a bronze statue and a scholarship in her name.

West Virginia State University says a dedication ceremony is planned for Aug. 25, the day before Johnson’s 100th birthday.

Long before the digital era, Johnson worked as a human “computer” at the agency that became NASA, working in relative obscurity as an African-American woman. Her contributions were later recognized in the “Hidden Figures” movie, with actress Taraji P. Henson playing her role.

West Virginia State hopes to endow the scholarship at $100,000, awarding money to students majoring in science, technology, engineering and math, targeting people who are underrepresented in those fields.

Prince Fans to Celebrate Musician With Festival in Minnesota

HENDERSON, Minn. (AP) - Prince fans will celebrate what would have been the music legend’s 60th birthday with a festival in the Minnesota community where the iconic movie “Purple Rain” was filmed.

The Mankato Free Press reports that Henderson resident Joel King once worked with Prince and is helping organize the three-day tribute that begins June 7. Prince fans from Mankato, Maryland and New York are also helping organizing the event.

The festival will include a bus tour of “Purple Rain” filming locations, a screening of the 1984 movie and live music.

Fans from around the world have helped pay for a bench, street sign and mural that will be permanently installed downtown and dedicated during the celebration.

All festival activities are free, but a donation to the Prince mural is requested.

$ Jury Awards 4 Dollars to the Family of an Unarmed Black Man Killed by Police in Florida St. Lucie County, FL — Four years after his death, the family of Gregory Hill, an African American man who was fatally shot by a white sheriff’s deputy, has been awarded a total of 4 dollars (later reduced to 4 cents). The jury cleared the deputy of any charges while Hill was blamed for his own death.

It was unclear what really happened at Gregory Hill’s house on the afternoon of January 14, 2014. Only three people were there: Hill and the two sheriff’s deputies, Deputy Christopher Newman and Deputy Edward Lopez.

On that day, the two deputies responded to a noise complaint about the blaring, obscene music coming from Hill’s house.

After a brief encounter with the deputies, Hill was found dead inside the garage with an unloaded 9mm handgun in his pocket.

According to the police, they knocked on Hill’s door that eventually opened with Hill facing them and his left hand on the garage door while his right hand down. The deputies claimed that Hill was holding the gun during the confrontation, but it is still in dispute. Nevertheless, the garage door was closed when Deputy Newman fired four times through it, striking Hill in the head once and in the abdomen twice.

Hill’s mother sued St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken Mascara and Deputy Newman, who has shot her son dead, for wrongful death. After nearly two weeks of trial and a 10-hour deliberation, the jury ruled that Newman did nothing wrong. Eight jurors decided that Mascara was 1 percent at fault, while Hill was 99 percent at fault as toxicology reports showed he was drunk at the time.

“My heart just dropped,” Hill’s fiancee, Monique Davis, told NBC News. “It was like, are y’all serious?”

Phillips, along with Hill’s family, plans to file a motion for retrial and hopes to appeal the case to the Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, a GoFundMe page created on behalf of Hill’s family has so far raised more than half of the $90,000 in 5 days.

So, who does benefit? If you scratch the surface of the net neutrality issue, you’ll see that it’s also a business-to-business issue. The bill appears to be written to favor very large “edge providers” – massive internet companies who generate so much traffic that infrastructure needs to be built around them, thus giving them a free ride (at our expense) when it comes to funding their equally massive infrastructure needs. That will shift all the costs onto ordinary consumers.

Although budding entrepreneurs and small businesses with limited financial resources would still be allowed to build an online presence for little to no additional cost, all public entities would be required to comply with procurement restrictions that would delay the deployment of critical new services. Yet with the right amendments, and political will, we can protect the little guys and the consumer.

Net-neutrality is necessary, but not at the expense of poor to middle-income earners, as this goes beyond the Obama net neutrality policy and hurts California consumers in the process.

By JAY REEVES Associated Press BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - It took generations to erect all the nation's Confederate monuments, and a new report shows they're being removed at a pace of about three each month.

A study released Monday by the Southern Poverty Law Center shows 110 Confederate monuments have been removed nationwide since 2015. That's when a racist shooting at a black church in South Carolina energized a movement against such memorials.

The number includes schools and roads that have been renamed, plus statues and rebel flags that have been taken down.

But the report says there are still more than 1,700 memorials that remain nationwide.

The head of the pro-monument group Sons of Confederate Veterans says it's still erecting new memorials. It's constructing a museum in Tennessee dedicated to telling the “Southern side” of the war.

Inglewood Man Convicted of Rape, Bondage Killing INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) _ A Southern California man who says a woman died after their bondage sex went wrong has been convicted of killing her and raping three other women.

Kevon Ross of Gardena was convicted Wednesday of 25 felony counts, including first-degree murder and sodomy of an unconscious victim.

He could face nearly 300 years to life in prison.

Prosecutors say Ross suffocated a woman at a Gardena hotel in 2015. Authorities say Kelli Nolan was wrapped in cellophane and duct tape from her abdomen to her hair. Ross later called 911 and his attorney said the death was accidental.

Prosecutors say that in other sexual encounters, Ross had women hanging from cloths around their necks until they were unconscious.

The defense argued that the women consented to the acts.

Heart Disease Heroes

By Lauren Poteat NNPA Newswire Contributor In the battle to save the lives of our mothers, daughters and sisters, “WomenHeart: The National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease,” is one of the greatest allies that families have against the deadly disease, the leading cause of death among women in the United States.

WomenHeart, “the nation’s only patient-centered organization solely serving millions of American women living with or at risk for heart disease,” according to the group’s website, recently celebrated the people and organizations that are on the frontlines of that battle, during the 18th Annual Wenger Awards in Washington, D.C. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an astounding one in four women die from heart disease every year.

Nearly 8 percent of Black women have coronary heart disease—the highest rate among all women; about 6 percent of White women have coronary heart disease.

As an actress and a natural advocate for healthy living, Chandra Wilson, who plays Dr. Miranda Bailey on the hit ABC television show “Grey’s Anatomy,” highlighted the importance of regular heart screenings and the need for better healthcare access for women, during the awards ceremony. Wilson was honored with the “Excellence in Media” award during the event.

“Nobody knows your battle better than you do…there are things that you need a physician to specifically listen for,” Wilson said. “You need to know your statistics, specifically women of color.”

Wilson also talked about the impact of heart disease on her own family.

“Even though, women face challenges with heart disease that are somewhat different from men, my father passed away from heart disease at age 55,” Wilson said. “And while he was aware of heart disease, he was never taught ‘Okay, this is what you do. Here are the things that can help,’ which is so important.”

During the Wenger Awards ceremony, Dr. Roxana Mehran (“Excellence in Medical Leadership,” Dr. Clyde W. Yancy (“Excellence in Medical Research”) and Rep. Debbie Dingel (D-Mich.) (“Excellence in Public Service”) were also recognized for their efforts in fighting heart disease. Actor and activist Lamman Rucker served as the master of ceremonies for the event.

Evan McGabe, the chair of the board of directors for WomenHeart, rallied attendees to get active and involved in learning more about their own heart statistics and overall health status.

“We really can’t believe that so many women still don’t know their risk of heart disease in this country,” McGabe said. “In our organization, we teach women how to be proactive about their health. We want to help women, not to dismiss their symptoms.”

McGabe added that WomenHeart works to empower women so that they can empower others.

According to the CDC, the most common symptoms of heart disease include chest discomfort, upper back pain, indigestion, heartburn, nausea/vomiting, extreme fatigue, upper body discomfort, shortness of breath, sudden weakness, paralysis in the limbs, blurred vision and impaired speech.

The risk factors for heart disease include high blood pressure, high LDL cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, obesity, poor diet and physical inactivity.

To reduce the chances of getting heart disease, the CDC recommends that people monitor their blood pressure on a regular

basis, receive regular screenings for diabetes, limit smoking, eat healthy, lower stress and limit alcohol consumption.

Closing out the event, Rucker gushed over the opportunity to be able to be a part of such a powerful movement.

“I’ve had a relationship with the Association of Black Cardiologist for a number of years and have done heart health work with the American Heart Association,” Rucker said. “As an artist, a big part of our purpose behind the work that we are doing is to not just live out our dreams and be stars, but to inform, uplift and inspire people through the work that we do.

Rucker continued: “Just being able to be a part of [WomenHeart and the Wenger Awards] is tremendous.”

Protesters March for Naked Man

Twenty-four-year-old Marcus-David Peters was shot and killed May 14 by a Richmond police officer after a confrontation

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Hundreds of protesters are demanding answers about last month’s fatal shooting of a man who had run naked onto an interstate highway.

The protesters marched Saturday afternoon down Broad Street in Richmond holding signs that said “Help Not Death” and “Justice for Marcus-David.” The American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia was among the groups participating in the protest.

Twenty-four-year-old Marcus-David Peters was shot and killed May 14 by a Richmond police officer after a confrontation on Interstate 95. Peters was unarmed but charged at the officer, who first fired a stun gun and then his service weapon.

Both Peters and the officer who shot him are black.

Peters' family has asked police to release their protocols for dealing with people suffering from episodes of mental instability.

UCLA comes up short in WCWS

By Earl Heath Contributing Sports Writer The UCLA softball team finished a one of the best overall seasons without a title.The Bruins fell to A.C.C. champion Florida State in back to back games on elimination Sunday.

The first game Rachael Garcia pitched five shutout innings before giving up a three-run homer to FSU’s Elizabeth Mason.

UCLA fell 3-1. In the night-cap they gave up a season high 12 runs in a 12-6 loss to the Seminoles. Senior pitcher Selina Ta ‘Alimo (10-3) took the loss.

UCLA had come into the Women’s College World Series with two sound performances on day one and two of the Women’s College World Series in at Hall of fame Stadium in Oklahoma City. Both days they fought from for wins over Florida State and Florida.

In game one trailing the Seminoles in the fifth inning 4-0 the Bruins got on the board as Freshman Briana Perez singled in Taylor Pack.

Later in the inning Aaliah Jordan tripled down the right field line scoring Bri Perez.The multi- talented Rachel Garcia reached on a throwing error and scored Jacqui who pinch ran for Carson’s Briana Taufalafua to make the score 7-4.

Garcia (28-3) got the win after throwing 146 pitches and striking out 15.

NFL Owners Adopt a New Anthem Rule

By Cameron Buford Whatsgoodinsports.com In the fall, many people across this county have cleared their day, as best they can, rushed home from church, prepared breakfast or snacks to enjoy a Sunday morning, afternoon, and evening of NFL football. Or you might be one of the many across America who meet friends, family, colleagues and fellow football fans at a local watering hole to enjoy a day of NFL football. You could be one of the thousands of fans are tailgating, at one of the sixteen venues throughout the states, prior to games being played.

As couple of season’s ago, in an effort to bring awareness to the racial inequality and systemic injustices in America in the form of a “peaceful protest”, Colin Kaepernick decided to take a knee during the playing of the National Anthem.

In response to the controversy that arose when Kaepernick’s “peacefully protest” the NFL has implemented a new rule for their teams to abide by during the playing at the National Anthem.

Regardless if you support Colin Kaepernick and his peaceful protest or not, one must admit they are more aware of the systemic injustices and racial inequalities that are infecting multiple communities across this country than they were previously. Though, I refuse to compare Kaepernick to Muhamad Ali his willingness to stand, or kneel in this case, for this issue is very commendable and he deserves credit for being brave enough to take this position.

At about the age of 9 or 10, when my aunt was stunned I didn’t know the words to the National Anthem; she then printed out the words and made sure I memorized the words and understood the story which the song represented. Most of us become familiar with the National Anthem as it is played or sang prior to Little League, High School, College and Professional Sports events all over this country. It wasn’t until 2009 the Department of Defense began an interesting partnership with the NFL. ESPN’s First Take host Stephen A. Smith commented on this topic in 2016 mentioning “Until 2009, no NFL player stood for the national anthem because players actually stayed in the locker room as the anthem played. The players were moved to the field during the national anthem because it was seen as a marketing strategy to make the athletes look more patriotic. The United States Department of Defense paid the National Football League $5.4 million between 2011 and 2014, and the National Guard $6.7 million between 2013 and 2015 to stage on field patriotic ceremonies as part of military-recruitment budget line items.” (a) Profiting off the National Anthem ceremony would naturally change the partnership, approach and outlook of the NFL towards the Anthem regardless what it may mean to any of their players. In 2015 Sen. John McCain and Sen. Jeff Flake refereed to the partnership between the NFL and the Department of Defense as “paid patriotism’. The following report by, the afore mentioned senators, details how the DOD used taxpayer dollars to finance their requested displays of patriotism. ‘”For the past several months, we have continued to work with DOD to fully understand the nature and extent of these contracts. In all, the military services reported $53 million in spending on marketing and advertising contracts with sports teams between 2012 and 2015. More than $10 million of that total was paid to teams in the National Football League (NFL), Major League Baseball (MLB), National Basketball Association (NBA), National Hockey League (NHL), and Major League Soccer (MLS). …

While we fully support the intent of the coaches and players programs and understand the need to cultivate long-term relationships with individuals who can influence the decisions of prospective recruits, we find the tactics used by the military services

questionable and the benefit to taxpayers undefined. If the most compelling message about military service we can deliver to prospective recruits and influencers is the promise of game tickets, gifts, and player appearances, we need to rethink our approach to how we are inspiring qualified men and women to military service.

Unfortunately, contrary to the public statements made by DOD and the NFL, the majority of the contracts—72 of the 122 contracts we analyzed—clearly show that DOD paid for patriotic tributes at professional football, baseball, basketball, hockey, and soccer games. These paid tributes included on-field color guard, enlistment and reenlistment ceremonies, performances of the national anthem, full-field flag details, ceremonial first pitches and puck drops. The National Guard paid teams for the “opportunity” to sponsor military appreciation nights and to recognize its birthday. It paid the Buffalo Bills to sponsor its Salute to the Service game. DOD even paid teams for the “opportunity” to perform surprise welcome home promotions for troops returning from deployments and to recognize wounded warriors. …

The DOD’s complete lack of internal controls for awarding, managing, and overseeing these contracts puts them at an excessive risk for waste, fraud, and abuse. Beyond being a question of if this contracting activity reflects appropriate judgement or fiscal stewardship of taxpayer funds, the fundamental question at hand is if this spending reflects appropriate national security priorities.

In 2014, while the National Guard was spending millions on professional sports advertising, it was simultaneously requesting additional funds from Congress to cover a more than $100 million shortfall to pay its troops and conduct critical training.”’ (a) Sen. McCain concludes that ‘”the Pentagon spent $6.8 million for such patriotic displays.”’ These displays included but were not limited to on-field color guard, enlistment and re-enlistment ceremonies, performances of the national anthem, full-field flag details, wounded warrior tributes, hometown hero welcomes, ceremonial first pitches or puck drops. So, one can see why they have conflicting concerns regarding the NFL and the National Anthem controversy, which has been swirling around the league over the past couple seasons.

The issue reached an apex when the NFL Players were verbally attacked by the President of the United States who referred to, our fellow American citizens, who chose to “peacefully protest,” with the intention of bringing awareness to racial inequality and systemic injustices in America, during the playing of the National Anthem by taking a knee as ‘“sons of bitches”’. Feeling caught in the middle of a controversy that they didn’t create; the NFL seems to want to the protect that financial partnership with the DOD rather than support the teams and players that play in own their league by implementing this new National Anthem rule.

Whether this new ruling is in direct response to the President of the United States, and his continued attempts to spread the false narrative of the NFL players being anti-military, or the supposed decline in television ratings; never mind that all TV ratings are down… Either way the NFL appears to be tone-deaf and insensitive to the thoughts and feelings of their own players with their zest to silence them. So much so, this questions in my mind the sincerity of the financial package the owners presented the Players Coalition earlier this year.

The NFL Owners offered over $87,000 to the Player Coalition which will “provide funds to charities and causes geared towards social justice reform and racial equality. Organizations to be supported with the funding would be Dream Corps and the United Negro College Fund stand to receive sizable donations as part of this plan.” Per Chase Crosby of the Forbes.com. As it turns out, ”the NFL may be moving some of the money from Salute to Service or Breast Cancer Awareness into the social justice causes.”

As Michael Reid disclosed his displeasure with the NFL’s agreement with the players coalition, “In the discussion that we had, Malcolm Jenkins conveyed to us -- based on discussions that he had with the NFL -- that the money would come from funds that are already allocated to breast cancer awareness and Salute to Service,” (b) Reid stated. He added, “so, it would really be no skin off the owners’ backs: They would just move the money from those programs to this one.” Additionally, Reid, referred to Rodger Goodell’s involvement with process and led the deal a “charade”. I’d say this really questions the solidarity between league and its players or lack thereof.

It must be mentioned that the NFL owners have choose to implement this new “Anthem Policy” immediately and without consultation with Nation Football League Players Association (NFLPA). The policy states, ‘players having the right to remain in the locker room during the national anthem. Should said player or teams head to the sideline during the anthem and protest, the team itself will be fined.’ (c) I think this speak directly to the dictator style management of the NFL owners. Obviously, the owners take the financial risk regarding funding the teams, though the players take the physical risk to make the teams successful. It would seem to me, that the team owners would want to develop more of an inclusive relationship with its players, than they seem to do.

Though some want to continue a debate over whether NFL players have the right to protest racial inequality and systemic injustice in the United States prior to games, those same people fail to mention players didn’t even appear on the field during the national anthem less than a decade ago… so this whole patriotism argument has very soft footing. Entertainment PHEN Entertains and Educates with “Daddy’s Boys” Stage Play One of the largest and most successful community - based events for prostate cancer education and awareness Nationwide — PHEN (Prostate Health Education Network) presented the Daddy’s Boys stage play on May 12th at the Reid Temple AME Church in Glenn Dale, MD before an audience of more than 1,000. With an educational workshop and prostate cancer screening held prior to the play, this was a highly successful community based prostate cancer education and awareness event.

“This was a Broadway caliber play, my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed this amazing production with a great message. PHEN and Garrett Davis productions have shifted the paradigm enabling them to meet the needs of more people through creative ministry,” says Rev. Dr. Lee P. Washington, Reid Temple’s Senior Pastor.

Rev. Daddy’s Boys is the latest health-oriented presentation by playwright Garrett Davis, who uses humor and music-laden dramas to bring awareness to minority health issues. Solo: A Star Wars Story Falls 65% in Second Week

By LINDSEY BAHR AP Film Writer LOS ANGELES (AP) _ “Solo: A Star Wars Story” is losing momentum quickly at the box office, even with a relatively quiet weekend free of any new blockbuster competition. After an underwhelming launch, the space saga fell 65 percent in weekend two with $29.3 million from North American theaters, according to studio estimates on Sunday.

“Solo” has now earned $148.9 million domestically, which is still shy of “Rogue One's” December 2016 opening weekend of $155.1 million and over $135 million short of where “Rogue One” was in its second weekend.

The 65 percent drop off is one of the highest in recent “Star Wars” history, although it is less steep than the second week fall of the franchise's last film, “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” which slid 67.5 percent in weekend two this past December _ but, that was also after a $220 million debut.

Internationally, “Solo” added $30.3 million, and globally the film has netted $264.2 million.

Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for comScore, thinks that all the media attention given to “Solo’s” less-than-im-

pressive opening weekend numbers could have actually negatively affected its second weekend earnings.

“Box office got conflated with perceived value of the movie and that might have affected its second weekend,” Dergarabedian said. “Sometimes news of the box office can impact a movie's bottom line.”

He noted that in comScore's audience survey, most of the over 1,000 people polled “really liked” the movie.

“Solo's” tumble brought it even closer to “Deadpool 2,” which is now in its third weekend in theaters and still managed to reel in an estimated $23.3 million to take second place. With a domestic total of $254.7 million and a crowded marketplace with both “Solo” and “Avengers: Infinity War” surrounding it, “Deadpool 2” is still only about $30 million behind where the first film was in its third weekend.

Love/Hate Relationship with the Plantation

What problems, unemployment or jobs that pay us less than our white counterparts for doing the same job, schools that treat our children different when it comes to punishment and graduating those who can barely read and only teaches our history of slavery and civil rights, which we’re still fighting for today. Healthcare that discriminates based on the color of our skin, banks that deny us loans or when we get loans, they’re subprime or higher rates than our white counterparts.

These are but a few of the problems in our community that we could solve, if we only knew our value and worked together.

These are just some of the things we complain about every day, but refuse to come together to solve them. We go into debt to get a good education, in order to get a good job, where we have to act, look and sound different than if we were around our own people.

But we complain about all these things, but won’t work together to create or support our businesses.

Now you have this new NFL owner’s rule that doesn’t allow our players to protest to draw attention to the injustices we face

every day. But the NFL is 70% Black, yet they refuse to stand together, in order to help make serious changes for our community.

If just half of the 70% would have supported Colin Kaepernick when he first drew attention to the injustices in our community, the owners wouldn’t dare put this rule in place. But our players are so afraid of losing their money and fame, they won’t stand up for what’s right. Don’t they realize who the fans are coming to see?

But they would rather work on the plantation and take whatever is dished out to them. The NBA which is 80% Black is no better, along with entertainers. This is why I say we don’t know our value. Our ancestors can’t be resting peacefully, considering they gave their lives and careers in order to make our lives better, and to have us only remember them on their birth or death day, rather than practicing what they preached. Every year we celebrate Dr. King, Malcolm X and to a lesser degree, the Honorable Marcus Garvey along with the many others who focused on the solutions rather than the problems. We have the solutions to our problems, we only need to work together in order to solve them.

Ways to Save This Summer Producer Opens Theaters

By Genoa Barrow California Black Media Whether or not temperatures will hit triple digits remains to be seen, but Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) has tips to keep customers from getting burned on their bills this summer.

The energy company’s website offers lots of warm weather advice, from using a microwave or an outside grill to cook on hot days instead of cooking in the oven to painting walls in light colors to keep rooms cooler. Small things can lead to significant savings, says Allen Fernandez Smith, PG&E’s Manager of Low-Income Programs and Strategies.

“One of the easy ways to save is setting your thermostat,” Fernandez Smith shared.

“Set the temperature on your thermostat a little bit higher so that your air conditioner turns on maybe a degree or two higher than you’re used to, which still may be comfortable for many folks, they may not even notice it, but it can save money,” he continued.

Washing in cold water instead of hot saves customers up to $40 a year, according to PG&E. Using and switching off power strips can save someone up to $75 a year. Many appliances and devices draw power even when they’re off, so unplugging coffee makers, cell phone chargers, televisions and entertainment systems helps to avoid unnecessary energy uses. PG&E’s website also has tips for parents with children who will be out of school for the summer using more energy than a household would typically see during the week in order to entertain themselves.

California residents can also avoid higher bills by going to cooling centers that open during the summer when temperatures soar. These centers can be used as an alternative to leaving on

air conditioning and fans for extended periods of hot weather.

PG&E helps fund such centers throughout the state.

“That’s a really great thing that’s being used by many families,” Fernandez Smith said, adding that some centers even offer transportation.

The summer savings tips are part of the energy company’s overall effort to help customers. The company also offers different programs to those who may need extra assistance in paying their bills every month. “We’re here to support all of our customers,” Fernandez Smith said.

“We understand that California is a very diverse state and our customers are also very diverse with many different needs and we want to make sure we’re meeting their needs by providing safe, reliable, affordable clean energy,” he continued.

PG&E has a Communities of Color Initiative and works with a network of community-based organizations and faithbased leaders to spread the word and encourage customers who are eligible to apply for the saving programs.

“It’s a two-way street. Part of it is us being able to provide these organizations and leaders with tools and tips so that they can share with their communities, but also it’s for us to get feedback from them,” Fernandez Smith said.

“Are the messages that we’re putting out there, can people understand them? Are they in the languages that are necessary?

Are they (done) in a way where they’re culturally relevant to these communities? We want to hear directly from our customers on how we can better serve them,” Fernandez Smith shared.

Simple Enchiladas

Ingredients Sauce: 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 2 tablespoons all - purpose flour 1- 2 28 - ounce can La Victoria ( or your choice) red sauce 1 - 2 cups beef or chicken broth 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon black pepper Meat: 1- 2 pounds ground beef (depending on how many you’re making) 1 medium onion, finely chopped (optional) 1 package taco seasoning 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon onion powder The Rest: Oil, for frying 10 - 18 corn tortillas Two 4 ounce cans diced green chilies 1/2 cup black olives 3 cups ( or more) grated sharp Cheddar cheese Cilantro, for garnish Sauce: In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the oil and flour. Whisk together and allow to bubble for 1 minute.

Pour in the red sauce, and the remaining ingredients. Bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer while you prepare the other ingredients.

For the meat: While the sauce is simmering, brown the ground beef with the onions in a large skillet over medium heat. Drain the fat, add the seasonings and stir to combine. Turn off heat and set aside.

How to put it together: In a small skillet over medium heat, heat some oil. Lightly fry the tortillas just until soft. Do not crisp. Drain on a paper.

Repeat until all the tortillas are fried.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Spread 1/2 cup of the sauce in the bottom of a large pan.

Next, one at a time, dip each tortilla into the sauce. Set the sauce- soaked tortillas on a plate. Place on some three meat mixture, green onions, chilies, and black olives. Top with a generous portion of grated Cheddar. Roll up the tortilla.

Place the tortilla seam side down in the baking dish. Put with the rest of the tortillas and pour remaining sauce over the top.

End with a generous sprinkling of cheese and green onions and olives.

Bake the enchiladas for 30 minutes or until bubbly. Sprinkle with chopped cilantro over the top and serve. Enjoy! #thecreativekitchen

By RUSSELL CONTRERAS Associated Press For nearly 10 years, residents in a California farming community have had to drive nearly 40 miles (64 kilometers) to see the latest film, a rare trip for some in a place where a third of the population lives in poverty.

That all changed in May when Moctesuma Esparza, a Latino movie producer, opened his latest Maya Cinemas theater in Delano in his ongoing effort to open theaters in poor, rural areas in the U.S. that lack entertainment options. The $20 million project gives Delano’s 53,000 residents access to recent movie releases in a high-end experience with luxury seating. In 1965, Delano helped spark Cesar Chavez’s farm worker union movement.

Esparza, who produced the 1997 movie “Selena” and has opened up four identical theaters in poor areas in California, said poverty shouldn’t sentence residents to “movie deserts” where inexpensive leisure is limited. He has vowed to do his part to change the landscape in rural America.

For years, rural communities in Appalachia, the American Southwest and the Mississippi Delta have seen small theaters close due to the high cost of technology updates and to economic downturns that discourage investors from taking over struggling movie houses.

Data from the National Association of Theater Owners, the trade organization that represents exhibitors, also found that the overall number of U.S. cinema sites fell 25 percent from 1995 to 2018. However, the number of screens spiked 45 percent largely as a result of an increase in megaplex movie theaters opening in urban areas.

The group estimates about 10,000 screens could go dark soon because small independent and rural theaters can’t afford to make digital upgrades that modern movies require.

Being in a rural area that may lack broadband or have spotty cell service that makes streaming services like Netflix and Hulu difficult to access, combined with the absence of a movie theater, can be isolating or just boring.

“We have nothing out here,” said Chanika Green, 18, of Shelby, Mississippi, a town of around 3,000 residents two hours south of Memphis, Tennessee. “No movie theater, nothing. It’d be nice to have something so we could do something.”

The recipients are: Terrance De’Louth, outstanding senior at East Bakersfield High School, serves as Vice President of EB’s BSU, is an active member of Project BEST (Black Excellence in Scholarship and Teaching) and a member of EBH Varsity Swim, Basketball, and Football Teams. His future plans include attending CSU and major in Accounting.

Malcolm Francisco, senior at South High School, scored in the 99th percentile for US high school students on the SAT, active member of project of BEST, and has remained on the honor roll throughout his entire school career. He is enrolled in SHS prestigious Math Science Engineering Academy. Malcolm plans to attend UCLA and earn a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering.

Bryce Jackson, senior at Stockdale High School, is a scholar athlete of the Varsity Basketball Team, represents the community by being a part of a large-scale community service project. Black Entrepreneur Finds Success with Minnesota Tech Firm ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) _ The founder of a thriving Twin Cities startup company is providing guidance to other black tech entrepreneurs in overcoming a dysfunctional home life on the path to success.

Clarence Bethea founded Upsie, a technology company that sells warranties that undercut retailers’ prices.

Founded in 2016, Upsie now has more than 14,000 users, Minnesota Public Radio reported .

Bethea grew up in a dysfunctional home. His father abused his mother, and he had to overcome homelessness and drug dealing.

“It was a lot of work, but I met the right people at the right time who changed the trajectory of my life,’’ said Bethea, 37. “I received guidance and support from

them along the way.’’

He went to Bemidji State University in 2002 on a basketball scholarship but dropped out of college to pursue entrepreneurship.

Bethea said his acceptance into Techstars Retail, an international startup accelerator, played an important role in his success. The accelerator offerings funding and mentorship for a three-month period. Upsie was one of 10 startups selected in 2017.

“It took away the black or white thing,’’ he said.

“It made people judge me on who I am, how I am as a founder, what our team is doing every day and the business.’’

The lack of a movie theater and basic leisure like skating rinks hurts struggling regions that have seen jobs leave, said Robby Moore, mayor of Lobelville, Tennessee. Residents in rural areas often have to travel more than an hour to watch a movie.

That’s why Esparza began building theaters in underserved areas in 2000. The theaters also provide jobs.

“I saw a business opportunity. But what I soon realized was that I have to become a developer, too,” Esparza said. “Few people were investing in these communities.”

Esparza is erecting megaplex movie theaters in rural Latino areas in California. Besides Delano, theaters have opened in Salinas, Bakersfield, Pittsburg, and Fresno.

His next theater is being planned for North Las Vegas. He says a developer could do the same for rural areas in Kentucky, West Virginia and the Deep South, if they research the need and build complexes that give moviegoers a special experience.

Some states are encouraging local communities to take active steps to bring movies to town.

New Mexico announced two years ago that it was joining other states in pushing an initiative to revitalize downtown districts in isolated, small towns by rehabilitating aging, historic theaters.

An economic development program, similar to efforts in Iowa and Illinois, seeks to save often-forgotten facilities like the Shuler Theater in Raton, New Mexico _ a poor and rural area.

The program helps refurbish buildings and gives grants for new digital projection and sound equipment.

New Mexico officials believe that reviving theaters in ranching towns and small cities near American Indian reservations will help create jobs in struggling downtown districts and spark excitement in entertainment deserts.

The Gates Family Foundation also is awarding $10,000 to $30,000 grants to rural communities to purchase new digital equipment for movie theaters.

Esparza says like food and shelter, all people need the communal experience that movies provide.

“Everyone should have a right to dream,” Esparza said.

“Movies allow people to dream, to think of a world outside their experiences.”

He is currently working on a Human Trafficking Awareness Video that will be seen in all Kern County Health classes, he’s an active leader in the BSU, and is Associate Student Body Commissioner of Athletics. Black Entrepreneur Finds Success with Minnesota Tech Firm ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) _ The founder of a thriving Twin Cities startup company is providing guidance to other black tech entrepreneurs in overcoming a dysfunctional home life on the path to success.

Clarence Bethea founded Upsie, a technology company that sells warranties that undercut retailers’ prices.

Founded in 2016, Upsie now has more than 14,000 users, Minnesota Public Radio reported .

Bethea grew up in a dysfunctional home. His father abused his mother, and he had to overcome homelessness and drug dealing.

“It was a lot of work, but I met the right people at the right time who changed the trajectory of my life,’’ said Bethea, 37. “I received guidance and support from

them along the way.’’

He went to Bemidji State University in 2002 on a basketball scholarship but dropped out of college to pursue entrepreneurship.

Bethea said his acceptance into Techstars Retail, an international startup accelerator, played an important role in his success. The accelerator offerings funding and mentorship for a three-month period. Upsie was one of 10 startups selected in 2017.

“It took away the black or white thing,’’ he said.

“It made people judge me on who I am, how I am as a founder, what our team is doing every day and the business.’’

According to Entertainment magazine, “Black Panther” is already the eighth-largest single-day gross for the film industry ever and the third-biggest opening for a superhero movie.

“Black Panther” scored a $75.8 million opening day.

“The Avengers” opened with $80 million and “Avengers: Age of Ultron” opened with $84 million. The film also became the highest-grossing title in history at 33 AMC Theaters across the country, according to a report in the Hollywood Reporter.

Cell Locks Failed During Brawl at Lerdo Pre-Trial Facility

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (AP) _ Officials say cell locks failed during a brawl involving 120 prisoners at a central California jail that left four inmates injured last week.

Tyson Davis, the chief deputy who oversees the Lerdo Pre-Trial Facility, told KBAK-TV Wednesday that the locks are old and inmates have begun to tamper with them, with some success.

The Kern County Sheriff’s Office said several inmates became disruptive Feb. 6 and refused to comply with the night’s lockdown. The violence sent four inmates to hospitals and left housing units damaged.

The labor union representing the guards says low staffing also contributed to the problem.

The Lerdo lockup North of Bakersfield is being improved and expanded and a new facility is expected to begin housing inmates by May.\

Woman Burned as Gas is Pumped into Garbage Can in Her Backseat

MOSES LAKE, Wash. (AP) _ Authorities say a Washington woman suffered severe burns after gasoline fumes ignited when gas was being pumped into a garbage can in a car’s backseat.

KOMO-TV reports the Grant County Sheriff’s Office says the woman, who was a passenger early Saturday morning at a Cascade Valley Grocery convenience store, was smoking a cigarette, which ignited the flames.

Deputies later found a large amount of marijuana in the car’s trunk.

A bystander took the woman to Samaritan Healthcare in Moses Lake.

The male driver who was pumping the gas ran away.
