In New Jersey, Andrew Johnson, an African American wrestler with dreadlocks was told he had to cut his dreadlocks or forfeit a wrestling match. Under pressure, the teenage wrestler stood resigned while a white female coach hurriedly cut his dreadlocks by ringside. The incident was captured on video by a journalist. Johnson went on to win his match.

Johnson’s teammates from Buena Regional High School can be seen on the video shouting their support and addressing him supportively before the match started.

chose the haircut, then won by sudden victory in OT to help spark Buena to a win,” tweeted journalist Mike Frankel on December 20. Frankel is the Sports Director for SNJ Today News in South Jersey.

“Disgusting and heartbreaking. A referee known for his racism, Alan Maloney (google him), made high school wrestler Andrew Johnson cut off his dreads or lose the match. They were covered and gave him no advantage. So, he cut them off. He won the match. Never should’ve been allowed,” tweeted Shaun King regarding the incident.

Reporting by Sports Illustrated identified the referee in the video as Alan Maloney. Maloney reportedly has a dubious history. It was reported in 2016 that Maloney was accused of calling another referee the N-word during a March, 2016 social gathering. The incident was reported in The Courier-Post Journal of South Jersey.

Johnson’s coaches argued with Maloney, the wrestling official before Johnson’s hair was cut. But Maloney forced Johnson and the team to choose between cutting off his dreadlocks or forfeiting the match. As Johnson’s coaches argued, Maloney started the injury clock and stopped listening to their appeals.

The level of heat seen on social media regarding the incident was palatable.

“Enough of these bastards. Ban him for life. Fire him from his job. Sue any goddamned racist idiots who defend him, into bankruptcy. Enough of this authorized return to 1938,” wrote noted sports commentator Keith Olbermann.

NAACP Holds #LivingWhileBlack Town Hall

By Stacy M. Brown NNPA Newswire Correspondent Thousands joined NAACP President Derrick Johnson, Democratic New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker, National Urban League President Marc Morial for #livingwhileblack, a candid conversation about the passage of the prison and sentencing reform bill and learning from this year’s elections.

Panelists also spoke about NAACP’s #LogOutFacebook protest, the shifting political climate, and the work ahead in 2019.

The NAACP led a digital protest dubbed #LogOutFacebook on Dec. 19th in response to the tech company’s history of data hacks which unfairly target users of color, NAACP officials said.

The organization also called on Congress to conduct further investigations on Facebook after a report released for the Senate Intelligence Committee revealed that the Russian influence campaign “made an extraordinary effort to target African Americans.”

Over the last year, NAACP officials expressed concern regarding the numerous data breaches and privacy mishaps in which Facebook has been implicated. Since the onset of the Silicon Valley boom, the NAACP has been openly critical about the lack of employee diversity among the top technology firms in the country.

However, recent revelations that Facebook hired an opposition research firm combined with its work with other deeply partisan strategy firms, call into question the notion that Facebook operates with a nonpartisan

view, Johnson said.

“Facebook’s engagement with partisan firms, its targeting of political opponents, the spread of misinformation and the utilization of Facebook for propaganda promoting disingenuous portrayals of the African American community is reprehensible,” he said.

The NAACP has returned a donation it recently received from Facebook.

Johnson and others also used the Town Hall to discuss the effect the NAACP had on the 2018 midterm elections.

“The biggest takeaway from the NAACP’s post-midterm election poll is that without the black vote, we don’t win,” said NAACP Spokesman Malik Russell, whose comment was tweeted out by Johnson during the Town Hall.

“Through our civic engagement campaign, we increased [voter] turnout twice as much as we did in 2014,” Johnson said. “This was a presidential level turnout.”

Morial spoke about the loss of wealth in the black community and the need to get it back. “We’ve lost 40 years of wealth, equity and homeownership as a community as a result of the Great Recession … we’re still burdened by the disproportionality of the credit system and the credit rating system, which negatively impacts African Americans,” Morial said.

Panelists noted that the while black homeownership fell from 47 percent to 41 percent after the recession (a number that reaches back to the levels of the 1970s), the current unemployment rate for African Americans is much

ciples, a robust work ethic and a burning desire to excel.

Given his ability to implement this rare yet useful combination of gifts, many said it’s no surprise he learned the value of hard work and determination at an early age.

Pettway began his professional career in 1991 at the Birmingham Police Department, where he served as a Correctional Specialist.

In 1993, he joined the Fairfield Police Department as a police officer, where he helped to strengthen the law enforcement system by responding to calls, making arrests, issuing citations, and testifying in court cases.

In 1999, he joined the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office as a deputy.

In 2008, he was promoted to detective and has earned a number of commendations from Hale.

He said community policing and criminal justice reform top his agenda.

“We have to bridge the gap right now between law enforcement and the community. Right now, there’s no trust and we need body cameras and dashboard cameras and, under my watch, we will be transparent,” Pettway said.

And, if anyone doubts he’ll keep his campaign pledge, Pettway said just pay attention.

He said he learned a great lesson from his campaign against Hale and that experience will help keep him vigilant.

“I had to get out there and fight and fend for myself. I had to be a real grassroots campaign,” Pettway said.

That fighting spirit is a needed hallmark particularly for African Americans who lived through and otherwise know the history of Jefferson County and Birmingham.

“During the Civil Rights movement, we were seen all around the world as law enforcement sick dogs on black people, turned water hoses on black people and then, of course, the Birmingham Church bombing that killed those four little girls,” Pettway said.

“But, we have so much history. I grew up two blocks from [Dr. Lewis]; two blocks from [activist] Angela Davis; next to [Arthur Davis Shores] the first African American to serve on the Birmingham City Council; and the first black judge from Alabama,” he said.

Pettway campaigned on several issues like keeping schools safe, providing the best training for deputies, bridging the gap between the community and law enforcement

MONTEREY, Calif. (AP) – California’s Monterey Bay Aquarium has apologized after some people perceived a tweet about a sea otter as body-shaming.

The aquarium on Tuesday tweeted a picture of Abby, an otter who helps train orphaned otters how to survive in the wild. The tweet featured social media words and phrases such as “thick,’’ “c h o n k’’ and “OH LAWD SHE COMIN’’ which are often used to describe someone who is overweight. People took offense.

The aquarium on Wednesday tweeted a multipart apology that it called a “learning moment.’’ It apologized and said it was unaware of the connotations associated with some of the memes.

Alabama’s New Jefferson County Sheriff Credits Faith, Family & Black Press

By Stacy M. Brown NNPA Newswire Correspondent Jefferson County Sheriff-Elect Mark Pettway had little support from fellow Democrats and virtually no money as he campaigned to unseat longtime Republican incumbent Mike Hale.

But, as he gathered his transition team in early December outside the Mel Bailey Criminal Justice Center, Pettway reflected on what he did have and what ultimately proved responsible for his narrow 51.45 percent to 48.54 victory.

“Family and faith and the Black Press,” Pettway said as he prepared for his Jan. 11 swearing-in ceremony that will official mark him as the first African American in Jefferson County, Alabama which includes Birmingham, ground zero for the Civil Rights movement. “I will always make time for the Black Press,” Pettway said.

A pre-election feature by NNPA Newswire and Black Press USA likely put Pettway over the top in his campaign to unseat the five-term incumbent Hale, he said.

“My election was different from everyone else’s. The incumbent had a lot of money, a name that was recognized and people in both parties supported him leaving me as the only one to run against the Jefferson County incumbent,” Pettway said.

“When the Black Press did the article, everyone was calling and was reporting about this great article and it was amazing what happened after.”

Pettway said it underscored a belief he’s had in the Black Press since he was a child living just two blocks from Birmingham Times founder Dr. Jesse Lewis Sr. “The Black Press is so important, it keeps us knowledgeable about what’s going on in our community and the things we need to know,” Pettway said.

“We need to tell our own story, our way. History needs to be told from our point of view, not someone else’s and that’s what the Black Press does.”

A lifelong Jefferson County resident, Pettway, 54, grew up in a working-class neighborhood not far from Birmingham’s Legion Field Stadium.

The son of the late Retired Army Sgt. First Class Officer Ed Pettway, and Jefferson County School Teacher Camilla Satisfield, Pettway said he began to realize his potential as his parents provided him with something far greater than material wealth.

SCHERERVILLE, Ind. (AP) – A northwestern Indiana man says he smashed the window of a car to stop shoplifters outside a busy store.

Eric Cordell says he needed six stitches for his injuries, but he was able to recover a bag of coats stolen from a TJ Maxx in Schererville on Dec. 4.

Cordell was leaving the store after buying gift cards when he heard a woman say that a man had taken a bag. He chased the thief, who got into a car, and then smashed the window with his elbow. Cordell tells the Post-Tribune , “I don’t know what I was thinking.’’

The thief gave up the bag and drove off with an accomplice. Schererville police were able to track down the vehicle. Spokesman Brian Neyhart says charges are pending.

$10,000 Surprise on NY Subway

NEW YORK (AP) – A Chanel purse left in a Manhattan subway station held a $10,000 surprise for the man who found it.

Richard Taverna was at the West 66th Street and Broadway stop earlier this week when he spotted the purse by a platform wall.

He tells the West Side Rag online blog that inside, he saw only some paper with Russian writing on it.

On Thursday evening at home, he took a closer look and discovered 100 $100 dollar bills.

The next morning, Taverna brought the purse to the local police precinct. But first, he laid out the bills on a table and snapped a photo.

Luckily, a woman had reported the missing money to police before going to Russia. It’ll await her when she’s back in January.

Gold Coin Thrift Store Donation LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) – A Kentucky man has donated a gold Canadian coin worth $1,300 to a Louisville Salvation Army kettle campaign for the second year in a row.

The Courier Journal reports the donor's identity hasn't been publicly shared, but area charity commander Maj. Roy Williams says it's the same man who donated an identical coin last year.

Williams says charity officials know it's the same person because he came forward last year to say what donation location should be given credit for collecting his coin.

The coins are both from the 1980s and were in pristine condition at the time of their donation. Officials say the coin is a boost during a shorten kettle season that has left them about $65,000 short of their $565,000 campaign goal.

From Slavery to Civil Rights and Environmental Racism

By Stacy M. Brown NNPA Newswire Correspondent WASHINGTON, DC – Decades ago, Civil Rights Leader Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis Jr., who now serves a president and CEO of the National Newspaper Publishers Association, coined the term, “environmental racism.”

It not only proved a true term, but it also linked several eras to a present day that still harkens back to centuries of demeaning and demoralization of Black Americans since the beginning of the transatlantic slave trade 500 years ago.

Once the slave trade ended, other oppressive eras ensued: The Antebellum Period; The Dred Scott Decision; The American Civil War; Jim Crow; Racial Terrorism; as did Jim; The Civil Rights Movement; and, throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, Environmental Racism, which has kept an immovable wedge between African Americans and the rest of America.

In noting that Environmental Justice is an important part of the struggle to improve and maintain a clean and healthful environment – particularly for African Americans, who have traditionally lived, worked and played closest to the sources of pollution – Chavis said that environmentalracismis racial discrimination in environmental policy making and the unequal enforcement of the environmental laws and regulations.

“It is the deliberate targeting of people-of-color communities for toxic waste facilities and the official sanctioning of a life-threatening of poisons and pollutants in people-of-color communities,” he said. “It is also manifested in the history of excluding people of color from leadership in the environmental movement.”

With President Donald Trump castigating the science of global warming, it’s little wonder that today’s environmental policies not only target people of color when it comes to the placement and operation of unhealthy facilities, they also exclude people of color from being a part of the policy making process — even though they are the ones who are usually most directly negatively impacted by environmental injustices.

“The underlying message of environmentally racist tactics and strategies is that certain neighborhoods and certain people matter less than others, and that geographical vulnerability is inevitable, when in fact it is socially con-

structed to be this way,” said Dr. Deborah J. Cohan, an Associate Professor of Sociology in the Department of Social Sciences at the University of South Carolina Beaufort.

“The message is that some groups of people and some neighborhoods are okay to be dumped on and treated as garbage. After all, garbage is trash; it is what we’ve decided we no longer need or have any use for,” said Cohan, who also writes for Psychology Today and Teen Vogue.

Cohan continued: “It’s what we wish to dispose of as we have decided it has no value. The problem with racism and society’s response to it is that we have failed to see this most basic thing: that in order to do that much damage to a community, one must so thoroughly objectify and dehumanize the people in it that they become things that can be discarded and forgotten about. People’s ability to thrive under these hostile conditions is greatly compromised.”

While many celebrated the end of Scott Pruitt’s time as head of the Environmental Protection Agency, others argued that his brief tenure could have a lasting impact on marginalized communities dealing with poor health, water contamination, or air pollution, because of environmental injustice.

And, Trump’s policies revealed that the president himself cares little if at all about environmental racism.

Studies have shown that black and Hispanic children are more likely to develop asthma than their white peers, as are poor children, with research suggesting that higher levels of smog and air pollution in communities of color is a factor. A 2014 study, as reported by VOX, found that people of color live in communities that have more nitrogen dioxide, a pollutant that exacerbates asthma.

The EPA’s own research further supported this. Earlier this year, a paper from the EPA’s National Center for Environmental Assessment found that when it comes to air pollutants that contribute to issues like heart and lung disease, blacks are exposed to 1.5 times more of the pollutant than whites, while Hispanics were exposed to about 1.2 times the amount of non-Hispanic whites. People in poverty had 1.3 times the exposure of those not in poverty.

considerably, with civil rights cases suffering in particular.

“Environmental racism is real. As documented in Richard Rothstein’s 2017 book, ‘The Color of Law,’ extensive federal, state and local government practices designed to create and maintain housing segregation also assured that polluting facilities like industrial plants, refineries, and more were located near Black, Latino and Asian American neighborhoods,” said Bruce Mirken, a spokesman for The Greenlining Institute, a public policy advocacy group in Oakland, Calif.

“Extensive data show that low-income communities of color still breathe the worst air and have excessive rates of pollution-related illnesses like asthma and other respiratory problems,” Mirken said. “These problems won’t fix themselves. …As we move away from oil, coal and gas to fight climate change, we must consciously bring clean energy resources and investment into communities that were for too long used as toxic dumping grounds. Here in California, The Greenlining Institute and allies have made considerable progress in designing our state’s climate policies to focus on underserved communities. Such efforts need to be increased and expanded nationwide.”

What’s more, a scan of environmental boards, C-suites, foundations, campaigns and funding, reveals a pronounced lack of diversity within the environmental movement that results in a white progressive world view that still values science and the physical landscape more than people — especially black and brown people — according to Felicia Davis, founder & CEO of the HBCU Green Fund and sustainability director at Clark Atlanta University.

“These communities are also less affluent and more likely to be located near, and experience, environmental hazards. Katrina and Flint exemplify environmental racism addressed by environmental justice advocates,” said Davis, who’s also the author of “Air of Injustice,” and serves on the boards of Green 2.0, The Chattahoochee River Keepers, and the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation.

Davis is also a U.S Representative for the global networking organization Gender CC – Women for Climate Justice, and has traveled internationally to participate in numerous United Nations World Conferences on Climate Change.

“There is simply no denying the difference in response to predominantly black compared to predominantly white communities,” Davis said.

“In spite of a growing focus on diversity, equity and inclusion, race remains an identifiable factor that impacts both access to opportunity, information and resources. This is a subtle systemic challenge referred to as institutionalized racism and the outcome is limited investment in environmental justice organizations,” she said.

Davis continued: “Since environmentalists are generally progressive, they sometimes target impacted communities under an environmental justice banner. Local or indigenous leadership is often under-valued with outsiders funded to address issues for or with impacted communities. That this approach is not even considered inherently flawed is further evidence of how these communities are regarded.”

Chavis also noted Trump’s declaration that climate change isn’t real. “The same people in high political positions that deny the truth of the science about climate change are the same people who deny the factual history and current manifestations of racism,” Chavis said.

“Environmental racism is real as is climate change.”

Booker also lashed out at what he said was an unfair bail system that’s succeeded in keeping too many African Americans locked up. “We have in this nation what I call a debtor’s prison. People are wallowing in prison simply because they cannot afford to pay the bail cost,” Booker said.

In 2017, even though violent crime (murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault) decreased nationwide, violent crime increased in Baltimore, according to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting. City officials reported 11,010 violent crimes in 2016 and 12,439 violent crimes in 2017. In Washington, D.C., once known as the “murder capital of the country,” violent crimes decreased from 7,711 in 2016 to 6,584 in 2017.

Baltimore, which is more than 60 percent Black, is the first city in the U.S. to work with Facebook to address violent crime.

More than 70 percent of Black adults use Facebook and 43 percent use Instagram, according to the Pew Research Center.

Facebook officials said that partnership with Baltimore is a long-term project.

Executives from the global social network recently hosted a “design jam,” a guided brainstorming session, to begin the development of new strategies aimed at addressing some of the underlying issues that contribute to violence in Baltimore. Although Facebook has taken on similar initiatives abroad, Baltimore was the first city in the United States to enter this unique partnership with the tech giant.

Gail Kent, Facebook’s global public policy lead on security, said that there are a lot of technology-based solutions that can help bring communities together and improve public safety.

“As an organization with 2.2 billion users, we have a responsibility for safer communities,” Kent said. “There is no technology solution to violence…there will not be an ‘app’ that we develop to solve Baltimore’s problems, but we can bring a different way of thinking to the table to bring communities together and help reduce violence.”

Speaking briefly during the design jam, Baltimore’s Mayor Catherine Pugh said that community engagement and mediation are critical to reducing violence in the city.

She also acknowledged the role that technology can play in improving the lives of Baltimore’s residents.

Pugh said that the city hired a data scientist, “to measure what we were doing every single day” and the HYPERLINK “https://moss-citistatsmart.baltimorecity.gov/” Mayor’s Office of Sustainable Solutions has used that information to improve access to city resources and to boost agency productivity.

Pugh applauded community activists and other civic leaders for working with Facebook on complex problems facing Baltimore.

“It is these kinds of conversations and collaborations that make a difference in the future of our city,” said Pugh.

Facebook has a vested interest in solving complex socioeconomic issues that plague majority-Black cities like Baltimore, due to the high use of the social media platform among African Americans.

sen reported that 55 percent of Black millennials spend “at least one hour a day on social networking sites, which is 6 percent higher than all millennials, while 29 percent say they spend at least three hours a day, 9 percent higher than all millennials.”

Shantay Guy, the executive director of the Baltimore Community Mediation Center, said that she was grateful for Mayor Pugh’s level of thoughtfulness with engaging Facebook to use its extensive resources for the benefit of Baltimore’s residents.

“That was really powerful for me,” Guy said.

Guy, who worked as a technology project manager at T. Rowe Price, said that she was “really stoked” to be a part of the design jam, because she understands how impactful technology can be for addressing everyday issues and long-standing social problems.

“Community engagement, technology engagement and civic sector engagement will be converging in a way that allows the community to be a part of the process instead of being left out, which happens far too often in Black and [Hispanic] communities,” Guy said.

Ray Kelly, the chief executive of the HYPERLINK “http://www.noboundariescoalition.com/” No Boundaries Coalition, a resident-led, advocacy group, said that social media has changed the way that community activists reach their constituents. Now effective communication strategies must not only include traditional marketing techniques like direct marketing and public panels, but also digital and social media marketing.

“No one impacted by police misconduct is going to the [Baltimore Police Department’s] website to see what policies are under review,” Kelly said. “Community groups have to let them know and we have to get that information out there, as effectively as possible.”

Kent called the project “a long-term engagement, not just in Baltimore, but in other cities in the U.S. and across the world.”

Kelly said that the most important thing that the Black community should know about Baltimore’s partnership with Facebook is that it’s important to get involved and stay engaged with city officials and corporations in order to have a positive change in their own neighborhoods.

“The fight is still going on,” Kelly said. “We’re in the midst of change.”

Supporting that change by reducing violence in Black and poor communities is not only Facebook’s responsibility; every company in the world and every citizen in the world has a role to play in elevating the most vulnerable members of our society, said Guy. Guy continued: “We all have a shared and individual responsibility for leveling the playing field and creating a world that is equitable.”

By Dwight Brown NNPA News Wire Film Critic Best Films Ben Is Back – The plague of drug addiction hits the tony suburbs and writer/director Peter Hedges takes his audience to the front door of a home that is bearing the brunt. Julia Roberts soars as the distraught mom trying to save the life of a duplicitous son, expertly played by Lucas Hedges. Courtney B. Vance co-stars in this compelling and cautionary family/drama.

Black Panther – The late Stan Lee left behind a key to the future. That key was Black Panther, as envisioned by the very intuitive director/writer Ryan Coogler. The African nation of Wakanda became the world’s #1 tourist destination ($1.3B at the box office). It’s supermen (Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Daniel Kaluuya) and superwomen (Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Letitia Wright) were artfully displayed (cinematographer Rachel Morrison) as they embodied Black power and pride.

Blindspotting – Of all the films that tackled racism and the PSTD a black man experiences as a result, this very grassroots indie captured that feeling the best. Set in gentrifying Oakland, CA, the ambitious script by lead actors Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal chronicles a time and place when inner city black neighborhoods are disappearing and the inhabitants are stressed—every day. Wonderful direction by Carlos López Estrada.

BlacKkKlansman – Leave it to filmmaker Spike Lee to find the most hard to believe but true story about a black cop (John David Washington) who infiltrates the KKK with the aid of a Jewish police officer (Adam Driver). The undercover brother even hoodwinks David Duke! A nervy and very informative look at the dimwits who joined the Klan and the brave policemen who thwarted their moves.

Considering the times we live in, the 1970s subject matter has a very contemporary appeal.

Crazy Rich Asians – This jolly film is the first Asian/ American movie to get a major release in 25 years! A stellar cast—Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Michelle Yeoh and Awkwafina—turn a rags-to-riches love story into the best romantic comedy of 2018. Director Jon M. Chu with writers Peter Chiarelli and Adele Lim turn a golden opportunity into solid gold entertainment.

The Favourite – The stodgy English period genre gets whacked by this demented take on an 18th century triad of deceitful women: Queen Anne (Olivia Colman), Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz) and a very ambitious and cunning palace interloper Abigail (Emma Stone). Eccentric director Yorgos Lanthimos finally gets a project that can withstand his very demented style of direction. Evocative cinematography (Robbie Ryan) and production design (Fiona Crombie) paint an astonishing portrait of palace intrigue.

The brilliant scholarly actor Mahershala Ali plays a concert pianist who is driven around The South, in 1962, by a burly Italian chauffeur/bodyguard played hysterically by Viggo Mortensen. The most unlikely director in the world, Peter Farrelly (Dumb and Dumber), tells the tale with a nod and a wink and peppers it with social and racial themes, real drama and historical facts. An organic crowd pleaser.

Night Comes On – Kids separated from their parents and relegated to foster homes and institutions should have their stories told. New actor-turned-director Jordana Spiro uses a script she co-wrote with Angelica Nwandu as a basis for her poignant ode to troubled youth. Dominique Fishback plays the train wreck of an 18-year-old older sibling in the process of leading her 10-year-old sister (Tatum Marilyn Hall) down the wrong path. Vulnerable characters you have to love.

Private Life – Every 10 years, writer/director Tamara Jenkins makes a feature film. It’s worth the wait. A neurotic couple, nearing middle age, tries to have a child. Previously, they were so caught up in their lives that by the time they decided to have offspring, they had to scramble and hope IVF would pay off . Tough challenge for them. Great laughs for the audience. Kathryn Hahn plays the fretful wife with anxious humor and Paul Giamatti is the put-upon husband. A sweet, delicious adult comedy.

A Quiet Place – This is the absolute best use of sound effects ever devised for a horror film. A very innovative but

scary take on a post-apocalypse world where demons’ attacks are instigated by the slightest sound. Ingeniously concepted by actor/writer/director John Krasinski who guides his wife Emily Blunt into the performance of her career as the protective mom.

Congress Introduce Bill to Award Aretha Franklin with Congressional Gold Medal

By Lauren Victoria Burke, NNPA Newswire Contributor In the wake of the August 16th death of the “Queen of Soul,” Aretha Franklin, Senators Kamala Harris (DCA) and Orrin Hatch (R-UT), along with Representatives Brenda Lawrence (D-MI) and Doug Collins (R-GA) have introduced legislation to posthumously award Franklin the Congressional Gold Medal.

The legendary artist died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 76.

“Aretha was simply a legend. Her work and impact will be felt for generations to come, and it’s long past time Congress honor her with the Congressional Gold Medal,” said Senator Harris in an August 21 release.

The legislation will be called, “The Aretha Franklin Congressional Gold Medal Act” and, should it become law, it will honor Franklin’s role in “shaping the nation’s culturally and socially relevant discography and highlight how she was an example to all people in how one person’s

talents can make a difference in the lives of millions of people across the globe.”

Many of the tributes to Franklin since her passing have emphasized not only her musical talent but her role in shaping and empowering the role of women with songs that gave voice to life experiences from a decidedly female perspective.

Aretha Franklin’s involvement in civil rights is also noted in the legislation. Her music often served as a call to action that inspired thousands to join civil rights movements and still maintains a social context that resonates across events even in present day.

“I am proud to join Senator Harris in introducing a bill to award a Congressional Gold Medal to honor an American music legend, Aretha Franklin, for her contributions to American music culture,” said Rep. Lawrence.

“Aretha Franklin was soul personified and she gave us

the gift of her voice, her truth and her unapologetic passion to demand compassion, love and R-E-S-P-E-C-T for women everywhere. An iconic entertainer, powerful civil rights leader, history maker and a beautiful spirit I was privileged to call friend; we hon- or this Detroit native, the true Queen of Soul. S h e will be dearly missed, never forgotten and always treasured,” Lawrence added.

“Aretha Franklin’s legacy, like her voice, will sing through the generations,” said Senator Hatch. “Through her talent, she touched the hearts of millions, lifting all of us with songs of hope and humanity. Aretha brought light, laughter, and love to all who would hear. I’m grateful to play a small role in honoring the life of this remarkable artist.”

The legislation is expected to pass and be signed into law.

It was non-stop, wall to wall, head-shaking, hands in the air, gut-busting laughter in the house from the moment the first “warm-up” comedian stepped onto the stage until Hughley stepped off. The set started off with Aziz Ansari, who tag-teamed with Clint Cooley, Jay Phillips and then Bo Dacious as they each took turns priming up the audience’s funny bone to receive the incomparable, sharp-humored Hughley.

Hughley’s smooth, comedic style and relevant material seemed flawlessly unscripted and was delivered with relatable honesty and perfection. The clever combination of natural comedic talent on Hughley’s tour was one for the history books.

The audience barely had a chance to recover from one joke when another came barreling down causing roaring screams of laughter for three and a half hours.

The sold-out shows should be a clue as to the magnitude of laughter you will expel and the pricey tickets should come with a warning label that “non-stop laughter is imminent.”

Darryl Lynn “D. L.” Hughley was born March 6, 1963 in Los Angeles, California to Audrey and Charles Hughley. He grew up in L.A.’s South Central where the gang presence was thick and affiliation was almost mandatory for survival.

During those years as a member of the Bloods, Hughley was kicked out of high school for frequent misbehavior. After a close cousin was murdered Hughley wanted to change his life’s trajectory.

So, he quit the gang, got his GED and was hired as

a telemarketer for the Los Angeles Times. Soon after, he moved into a management position and met his wife-tobe, LaDonna.

In February 22, 1986, D.L. married LaDonna who later convinced the “funny man” to try his humor onstage.

He started his comedic journey in 1992. After years of club dates, he was selected by BET as the first host of “Comic View” a stand-up comedy show where he remained till 1993. He also hosted Def Jam from 1992 to 1997.

In 1998, Hughley created and starred in the sitcom “The Hughley’s,” which ran until 2002. He appeared in other television productions including “Shackles,” “Scrubs” and “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.”

In 2008, Hughley was selected to be the host of the BET Awards Show. He was also one of the four comedians, alongside Bernie Mac, Steve Harvey, and Cedric the Entertainer; featured in the Spike Lee film “The Original Kings of Comedy.”

In 2013, Hughley became a contestant on Season 16 of Dancing with the Stars and filled in for Meredith Vieira, hosting Who Wants to be a Millionaire.

He also participated in “Black Love” and an HBO-produced special “Unapologetic.”

Hughley is known as an author, political commentator and a talk radio show host.

His current project, “Trust Me, I’m a Game Show Host” is packed full of truth and deception as contestants try to detect which of two game show hosts is telling the truth and which is telling a lie.

Each time contestants are able to correctly choose which host is being honest, they are rewarded with cash.

Hughley can be heard on Majic 94.5 weekdays. The D.L. Hughley Show airs from 2-6p.m.

Williams Contributing Writers The Bakersfield Senior Center hosted a two-day event which included a food give-away on Thursday December 20, 2018 and on Friday December 21, 2018 a “SHARE THE LOVE” Christmas Gala. Both events benefitted seniors in the Bakersfield community and seniors who are long-time members of the center.

Meals on Wheels America was named as one of the National Partners of the 2018 Subaru Share the Love Event

for the 11th consecutive year and the BSC has been a member of the non-profit organization for the past 3 years.

“Over the past ten years, Subaru and its retailers have helped the Meals on Wheels network deliver nearly 2 MILLION MEALS to homebound seniors across the country.”

Whenever a new Subaru is bought or leased during 2018, through January 2, 2019, that number of meals delivered to seniors will increase. During this year-end sales

event, Subaru of America will donate $250 to the customers favorite selected charity.

“When Meals on Wheels charity is selected, $250 goes to the MOW organization. For every non-profit that’s registered with MOW in each state; the total funds will then be divided among those organizations” explained, Lilli Parker, Executive Director of Bakersfield Senior Center.

Meals on Wheels America provides leadership to local

community-based programs dedicated to fighting hunger and isolation among our nation homebound seniors.

One-hundred six (106) turkeys and all the trimmings were handed out Thursday to seniors ages 60 and above.

An ID and proof of Medi-Cal was required to receive the hefty bags donated by Subaru. According to www.mealsonwheelsamerica.org/sharethelove., 16.6 million seniors are isolated and live alone, 1 in 7 seniors struggles with hunger, and 18.8 million seniors are living in or near poverty.

“It’s all about showing love in the community, said Parker, what I want people to know is, this event we are having today, Share the Love, we are giving back to the community, we are here, and we exist.”

“You make me happy. I get up in the morning and my house is empty. I come here for all the hugs I can get!”, Mrs. Helen Collins exclaimed (while hugging Parker).

Healthnet Medicare, Advocate Lydia Irwin, was on board to assist seniors looking for insurance plans. “Healthnet Medicare tries to connect seniors with finding an insurance plan to better their lives and to be the managed care provider for them, she said. Not a lot of seniors are aware of the many benefits our plans are able to provide for them such as: glasses, dental care, allowance and transportation and more.”

The BSC concluded the two-day event on Friday with a Christmas Gala from 6-9 p.m. Subaru Sales Manager, Nick Lightle was the guest speaker for the holiday gala. Approximately 110 seniors and their family members enjoyed the festive occasion which included a scrumptious dinner of sliced Roast Beef, mashed potatoes and gravy, peas and carrots, rolls, dessert and an evening of dancing.

Natesha Johnson, Founder of Upside Academy and members of the Academy graciously and tirelessly served the seniors throughout the three-hour event. “These are skill-sets that these young people can use towards obtaining jobs”, she said.

The 10 minute “Wobble” song got seniors and members of the BSC exercise group (ages 50-89)up and out on the dance floor. The energetic agile group continued to “dance the night away” with the smooth sounds of jazz and 80’s tunes provided by Wendell “Music Man” Moore.

“We’re going to be doing big things in this neighborhood, Tee Daniels, President of the Board of Directors, said. This generation(seniors) we don’t want to forget them.”
