Most Holiday Shopping Online Three Quarters Are “Excited” when Brands Send Deals in Emails

Gone are the days of coupon clipping, instead consumers prefer to receive discounts and deals from brands via email. In fact, two-thirds of respondents reported they open emails from brands they believed contained product deals or sales. (Photo: iStockphoto / NNPA)

SAN FRANCISCO — Leanplum, the leading multi-channel engagement platform, today announced the results of a new study* that shows consumers are shunning brick-and-mortar stores this holiday season with over 95 percent choosing to buy half or more of their gifts online. Younger Americans (Millennials and Gen Zs) are leading the online shopping trend and over 16 percent are “only” shopping online this holiday season. As shopping online and via mobile devices quickly becomes the new norm, personalized communication becomes even more crucial to brand success. With 80 percent of respondents reporting that they shop on their mobile phones, brands need solutions that enable them to reach their customers at appropriate touchpoints. Brands must successfully connect the right way and at the right time with their customers. Three-quarters of shoppers find it helpful to receive emails from retailers regarding deals and promotions.

Interestingly, 74 percent of those surveyed said they were “excited” to receive notifications from retailers about offers/sales. After receiving a notification from a brand about a deal, almost 70 percent said they would check out the offer and probably purchase the item. However, 75 percent of respondents said generic messages from retailers annoy or bother them. Consumers have a preference for when and how they would like to receive messages from retailers. It is imperative retailers communicate with their consumers regularly regarding topics that are useful to them and in the form that they are most comfortable engaging with, to ensure consumer satisfaction and retention. “Personalizing customer experience and communication is the cornerstone of everything we do at Afterpay,” said Frazer Adnam, CRM marketing director at Afterpay, a Leanplum customer. “Christmas is a key trading period for Afterpay and the retail sector, so it’s imperative we deliver a world-class personalization

experience to our customers and make trading seamless.” Across all income levels, consumers reported sales as the primary reason they opened notifications from brands and retailers. Surprisingly, even respondents who earn $150,000 or more annually, stated they are most excited to receive push notifications from retailers regarding sales. Gone are the days of coupon clipping, instead consumers prefer to receive discounts and deals from brands via email. In fact, two-thirds of respondents reported they open emails from brands they believed contained product deals or sales. When asked about favorite shopping apps, the Amazon app dominated with 82 percent of the vote. Walmart was a very distant second with five percent of the vote, followed by second-hand marketplaces (eBay/ Poshmark/ThredUp) at four percent and Target at three percent. Consumers had opinions about how brands communicate with them as well. Sweden’s H&M handily beat out other brands with 19 percent of the vote. Urban Outfitters (12 percent), Asos (four percent), Zara (four percent) and Brandy Melville (two percent) rounded out the top five best brands at communicating with consumers. “As shopping habits shift online and away from brickand-mortar stores, brands must adjust to communicate with their customers via mobile,” said Momchil Kyurkchiev, CEO and co-founder of Leanplum. “Through our research, we see that it’s important that brands provide a personalized experience for each customer. At Leanplum, our core mission is to enable our customers to consistently deliver relevant, timely and personalized communications to their end users.” Other interesting statistics include: • Nearly half (46 percent) of respondents said that they’ve bought a product because it was shown in an app or sent in an email • Over half (52 percent) of Millennials and Gen Zs will shop on Cyber Monday and Black Friday compared to just over a third of Gen Xers and Baby Boomers • About two-thirds of respondents that make $150,000 or more annually plan to do most of their holiday shopping online this year Download the complete survey report for additional tips and insights. *Leanplum surveyed 1,000 online shoppers in the United States, October 2019. Black Caucus Visits US-Mexico Border

“Mistreatment of Black Immigrants is Another ‘Stain on America’”

Members of the Congressional Black Caucus, Rep. Karen Bass (D-CA) (center), Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) (fourth from left), and Congresswoman Yvette Clarke (D-NY) (far left), along with local Congressman, Rep. Juan Vargas (second from left), visited a shelter for African asylum-seekers in Tijuana November 22, 2019. Chairwoman Rep. Karen Bass (D-Calif.) led a delegation of Congressional Black Caucus members to the U.S.-Mexico border on Friday in San Ysidro, California, where they said they witnessed first-hand the deplorable treatment and plight of Black immigrants. Bass, Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA), and Congresswoman Yvette Clarke (D-NY), each said they wanted to examine the treatment – and call attention to the mistreatment – of African immigrants at the border, including the October 1 death of 37-year-old Cameroon immigrant Nebane Abienwi. Attorney Nana Gyamfi, the executive director of the Black Alliance for Just Immigration, joined the group at the border. “It was a very frustrating experience today,” Bass said from the border during an exclusive conference call with publishers, editors, and writers for the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), the trade association that represents the newspaper and media companies that comprise the Black Press of America. “We crossed the border into Tijuana, Mexico, and we met with a group of Black immigrants from Cameroon, Sierra Leone, and other African countries. Some who have

made unbelievable journeys,” Bass stated. The CBC Chair and her colleagues blasted the Trump administration and its policies toward immigrants, particularly those from countries that consist predominately of people of color. Bass described the sobering plight of a Black migrant from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. “The first child separated from her mother was from a family from the Democratic Republic of Congo. The child was sent to Illinois while the mother, who spoke French, was detained at the border,” Bass stated. “This happens as our country grapples with [a president] who makes it clear that he welcomes immigrants from places like Norway, but not ‘sh-thole’ countries. He’s breaking the law. International law states that if you are from a country that’s experiencing distress, you can request asylum. Trump has done everything he can to block that and to make the United States not compliant with international law,” Bass noted. In the case of Abienwi, the Cameroonian died in the custody of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement after experiencing a hypertensive event at the Otay Mesa Detention Center in San Diego. Reportedly, he was unresponsive and appeared Continued on page A6

Toddler Dies After Naked Mom’s Deadly LA Crash SANTA CLARITA, CA (AP) – A 2-year-old girl whose mother crashed their car while driving naked has died, two days after the Los Angeles-area crash that also killed the girl’s sister. Authorities say the Bakersfield toddler died of her injuries Wednesday at a hospital. Her 6-year-old sister died Monday and her mother remains hospitalized in stable condition. The California Highway Patrol says the Subaru crashed Monday morning in Stevenson Ranch, an unincorporated area north of Los Angeles. Authorities say the car veered into an oncoming traffic lane and hit a curb, sign, a tree and traffic signals before slamming into a utility pole and catching fire. Good Samaritans rescued the woman and freed the girls from their seatbelts in the backseat moments before it caught fire. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Bakersfield Police Say Woman Tampered with Officer’s Food BAKERSFIELD, CA (AP) – A California woman who lost a police excessive force lawsuit was arrested on suspicion of tampering with an officer’s food at a McDonald’s restaurant. The Bakersfield Californian reported 21-year-old Tatyana Hargrove was arrested Friday after the restaurant provided video to the Kern County Sheriff’s Office. A Bakersfield Police Department spokesman confirmed the food was served to one of its officers. Hargrove sued the Bakersfield police in 2017 after two officers mistook her for a male suspect and she was bitten by a police dog. Hargrove says she was thrown to the ground and punched in the face, while the officers say the encounter was less confrontational than Hargrove described. The Bakersfield police chief apologized, but a jury found in a favor of the city and the officers.

Till Memorial Vandalism Security A commission behind a memorial for teenage lynching victim Emmett Till in Mississippi was forced to get a new sign with a bulletproof front and add cameras and alarms after repeated vandalism. It’s one of numerous monuments to U.S. civil rights figures or events around the country that vandals have attacked through the years, forcing organizations and elected officials to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on repairs and surveillance. There’s no movement to pass federal protections for such memorials. Advocates of the sites say their only recourse has been to rely on local and state vandalism and hate crime laws to prosecute suspects. The need for protection came into focus again this month after security cameras captured white nationalists trying to film in front of the new Till memorial sign.
