By JOE REEDY AP Sports Writer LOS ANGELES (AP) – Major League Baseball's largest developmental effort for minority players is being renamed after one of the sport's greatest players.

The Elite Development Invitational has been renamed the Hank Aaron Invitational and will include a showcase game beginning next season. The event has been held since 2015 for high-school age players to get them to the next levels of the game either on or off the field. The program has been run by Major League Baseball, the Major League Baseball Players Association and USA Baseball.

The announcement was made at Dodger Stadium on Friday before Game 3 of the World Series between the Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers.

“It means an awful lot to me. We need someone to

help shape this game into what the game is all about. And the game is about all of us, not just a few of us, but all of us who have an opportunity and a chance to play this game,” Aaron said.

The Hank Aaron Invitational will be held in July and August at Dodgertown in Vero Beach, Florida. Approximately 250 players ages 13 to 18 will receive training from former big league players and coaches. Recent instructors in the program have included Hall of Famers Ken Griffey Jr. and Dave Winfield along with former manager Jerry Manuel.

Titled “Build the Wall, Enforce the Law,” the legislation includes $23.4 billion for the wall, according to CNN. Bakersfield College students are weighing in on the topic. Here’s what they think of the legislation: Q: Do you think the bill is useful? Do you think it will achieve its goal of reducing illegal immigration?

A: No, I don’t think it will be useful. We already have border control; why waste money building a wall when we already have a system [in place].

Dialysis Companies Spend $111 Million to Kill Ballot Measure

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – Dialysis companies have contributed an extraordinary $111 million to defeat a California ballot initiative.

Proposition 8 would cap profits for dialysis clinics that provide treatment for people with damaged kidneys.

A $5 million donation from dialysis company Fresenius pushed the anti-Proposition 8 campaign’s total past the $109 million pharmaceutical companies spent two years ago to defeat a measure limiting prescription drug costs.

Proposition 8 opponents have raised more than any group on one side of a U.S. ballot issue since at least 2002. Ads blanketing the California airwaves feature dialysis patients saying passage could lead to clinic closures that endanger their lives.

The campaign supporting the measure, led by the Service Employees International Union, has spent $18 million. Supporters say passage will ensure dialysis companies put patients before profits.

The parking lot will have 71 new spaces to accommodate 63 vehicles, 5 ADA , and 3 motorcycle spaces. 3 bicycle lockers will also be available.

A security system with an additional 10 cameras covering the entire parking area was installed and integrated with Bakersfield Police Department’s monitoring system for the Amtrak Station, also installed were Additional site lighting to assist with camera monitoring, 2 pedestrian gates; 1 keypad/card-reader controlled and 3 vehicle gates; 1 keypad/card-reader controlled.

The project cost totaled $1,861,000.00 and was paid for through funds from Public Transportation Modernization, Improvement, and Service Enhancement Account (PTMISEA) and Transit System Safety, Security, and Disaster Response Account (TSSSDRA).

Why Should African Americans Vote?

Every day our tax dollars go into the government’s pot and then we rely on elected officials to determine where to spend that money. If we don’t vote people into office who have our best interest and initiatives that support our daily livelihood, then we can’t expect our tax dollars to be spent in our best interest. Being complacent and not voting is not an option; unless you simply concede to giving your hard-earned money away to people, programs and ideals that you do not support in everyday brass tacks. When you don’t vote, you inadvertently support those contrary issues with your money.

Voting isn’t often seen that clear, cut and dry. In 1961, President John Fitzgerald Kennedy issued Executive Order 10925, which included a provision that government contractors “take affirmative action to ensure that applicants are employed, and employees are treated during employment, without regard to their race, creed, color, or national origin.” The intent of this executive order was to affirm the government’s commitment to equal opportunity for all

qualified persons, and to take positive action to strengthen effort to realize true equal opportunity for all.

President Lyndon B. Johnson followed up by prohibiting discrimination based on race, color, religion and notional origins. He then added prohibiting discrimination based on sex and Executive Order 11246 requiring federal contractors to take affirmative action to promote the full realization of equal opportunity for women and minorities.

The 1960’s were a watershed era for change and demand for equality. Prior to these tumultuous times, Black businesses were shut out of contracting opportunities and Black youth were denied entrance into major universities (funded by our tax dollars), not based on merit, but simply because they were Black.

After much angst, negotiations and a lot of “come to Jesus” conversations, Blacks started voting to support JFK, his predecessor Johnson and little brother Robert Kennedy.

As a result, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 aimed to overcome legal barriers at the state and local levels that prevented Blacks from exercising their right to vote as guaranteed

under the 15th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

The ability to vote and Affirmative Action created wealthy Black entrepreneurs and a swarm of African Americans entered college at a record clip, instantly raising Blacks’ earning potential in the wealthiest nation on the planet.

Obtaining contracts to do business with government has made whites in America rich and could very well create wealth in the Black community for many generations. The government issues billions of dollars in contracts for businesses to complete work projects. The money that comes with those contracts are your tax dollars and mine. If we don’t vote to ensure Blacks get an equal opportunity to obtain those contracts, then complaining about our economic plight is futile.

In 1996 African Americans voted at an all-time low.

We didn’t participate and during that same year, Proposition 209 was ushered into California 54% (yes) to 46% (no) to essentially roll back affirmative action, prohibiting race, religion, sex, color, ethnicity and national origin to

be considered in the University admission decision process and issuing of contracts to businesses. Now government can’t, by law, ensure minorities get a piece of the pie unless elected officials with our best interest are at least speaking up and pushing for equity, but if we aren’t voting then we aren’t winning.

Prior to this proposition, California was righting the wrongs of slavery, Jim Crow and overt discrimination.

When Blacks decided not to vote, they also decided to give back the pie, the American dream and the spoils of the tax dollars we work so hard to obtain.

This November 6, we have an opportunity to vote on for statewide officials, local officials and a bevy of initiatives. Don’t be complacent. Get in the game.

African Americans cannot afford not to vote. We must vote for people who have our best interest in mind, heart and soul. We must vote for issues that advance the well-being of our families and communities. We can’t expect to win with every vote, but if we don’t vote, we can certainly expect to lose.

By Stacy M. Brown NNPA Newswire Correspondent@StacyBrownMedia Alabama’s Jefferson County’s largest city is Birmingham and Sheriff Mike Hale and his family share a long history with the county and city whose name is forever linked with the struggle to gain civil rights in this country.

As Jefferson County’s current sheriff, Hale, a Republican, who is seeking reelection, was recognized as “Crime Stopper of the Year” and has been credited with creating a new crime-fighting unit designed to to crack down on criminals throughout the county.

However, Sgt. Mark Pettway, a Democrat opposing Hale on the Nov. 6 ballot, sees the environment differently than his current boss.

“The department, until last year, was under a federal consent decree because of its unfair hiring and promotion practices and I’ve seen a lot of that during my tenure here,” said Pettway, who has worked in the County Sheriff’s Department for 18 years.

The consent decree was issued as part of a 1970s-era consolidated lawsuit that alleged the County, City of Birmingham, Sheriff’s Department, and the Personnel Board of Jefferson County discriminated against Blacks and women in their hiring and promotions.

Birmingham and the Jefferson County Personnel Board, which provides employment services for the county and cities, were ultimately released from their decrees.

District Judge finally released the Sheriff’s Department from the decree.

“Still,” Pettway said, “not much h a s

changed,” which is the primary reasons he’s campaigning for election as Sheriff. If elected, Pettway will be the first African American sheriff in Jefferson County history.

“It didn’t get any better. We’re still not where we should be and after watching other activists in action, I decided it was time for me to rise up and do something,” Pettway said.

“That Birmingham, Alabama still resembles in some ways its racist history should be alarming to residents and voters,” Pettway said.

In fact, the ties that bind the current sheriff to the Civil Rights era undeniable. Hale’s uncle, Melvin Bailey, was also a Jefferson County sheriff from 1963 to 1996.

Bailey was the lead law enforcement official when the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church was bombed in 1963 and history will always remember him as the last sheriff to jail Civil Rights Leader, Martin Luther King, Jr. It was during Bailey’s tenure that the federal government took over the Sheriff’s Department.

Hale transferred to the Sheriff’s Department under his uncle’s command in 1976 and rose to the rank of captain, eventually commanding every division within the department. He first won election in 1998 and has been re-elected four times.

“I grew up here. This is the [same] place where they turned the dogs on Black people and used the hoses on them,” Pettway said.

“This is a very important and historical election and it’s an opportunity for change. It’s a chance for us to have a seat at the table where we can make those changes and where the hiring practices can be better for people of color and for women and where a [minority] can say, ‘hey, I can be Sheriff one day, too.’”

A lifelong Jefferson County resident, Pettway grew up in a working-class neighborhood not far from Birmingham’s Legion Field Stadium.

The son of the late Retired Army Sgt. First Class Officer Ed Pettway, and Jefferson County School Teacher Camilla Satisfield, Pettway said he began to realize his potential as his parents provided him with something far greater than material wealth.

Specifically, they instilled in him strong moral principles, a robust work ethic and a burning desire to excel. Given his ability to implement this rare yet useful combination of gifts, many said it’s no surprise he learned the value of hard work and determination at an early age.

Pettway began his professional career in 1991 at the Birmingham Police Department, where he served as a Correctional Specialist. In 1993, he joined the Fairfield Police Department as a police officer, where he helped to strengthen the law enforcement system by responding to calls, making arrests, issuing citations, and testifying in court cases.

In 1999, he joined the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office as a deputy. In 2008, he was promoted to detective and has earned a number of commendations from Hale.

He said community policing and criminal justice reform top his agenda.

“We have to bridge the gap right now between law enforcement and the community. Right now, there’s no trust and we need body cameras and dashboard cameras and, under my watch, we will be transparent,” Pettway said.

“I will implement accountability and the community will know their officers. The officers will get out of their cars and the community will know them by their names,” he said.

Pettway said the revolving doors of prison must stop.

“We don’t want to send people home the same way they came in. We want to educate them and no more of people profiting from others going to jail.” Pettway said.

“We have to stop the privatization of prions and start teaching inmates skills that are necessary to become employed when they get out.”

Under his guidance, Pettway said the entire Sheriff’s Department will improve on communicating with the public. “If I can communicate my thoughts and ideas to anybody and I can get them to buy into what I’m trying to, then there’s progress. Good communication skills are needed to build influence and get things done,” he said.

Pettway also noted that he’s anxious for election day.

“A lot of eyes will be on the south. We will be heavily watched with Stacey Abrams running in Georgia and Andrew Gillum in Florida,” he said.

“Jefferson County is another one of those places where people will have their eyes on. This is where history has been made. It’s where a lot happened during the Civil Rights era. Making history is always good but its more than making history, we want to bring much-needed change to an area that needs change and it’s sad that we’re still talking about making history.

“We want people to know that we are changing down here.”

ATLANTA —The NAACP Georgia State Conference President Phyllis T. Blake filed complaints with the State Board of Elections for possible voter suppression tactics regarding malfunctions of the touch screen machines in Bartow, Cobb, Henry and Dodge Counties.

The Georgia NAACP has received complaints from several voters on touch screen irregularities when attempting to select Stacey Abrams as their choice for governor – the machines instead chose Secretary of State Brian Kemp.

In other instances, machines showed ballots being cast before any the person actually voted.

According to reports from eye witnesses to NAACP officials, this has occurred in at least four counties in Georgia including Bartow, Dodge, Cobb, and Henry Counties.

Yesterday the NAACP filed complaints with both Bartow and Dodge County’s Board of Elections and this morning filed complaints in both Cobb, and Henry counties. The NAACP is a non-partisan organization, and we want to ensure that each voter is able to cast their ballot for their candidate of choice.

“The essence of our democracy is at stake and the NAACP is paying close attention to the continuous flow of irregularities and voter suppression issues emerging out of Georgia,” said NAACP President Derrick Johnson. “We are working hand in hand with our Georgia State NAACP and its President Phyllis T. Blake in ensuring the integrity of our vote is not compromised.”

This is the latest of several irregularities connected to Kemp’s office including the attempted closing of 7 of 9 polling stations in the nearly-all Black Randolph County, the failure to process 53,000 disproportionately Black incomplete voter registration applications, and the decision by his office to utilize a website built with public funds to promote his candidacy for governor. Trump Supporter and Attempted Bombing Suspect Targeted Five Prominent Black Democrats

By Lauren Victoria Burke NNPA Newswire Contributor Less than two weeks before Election Day from October 22 to 26, 2018, Trump supporter and attempted bombing suspect, Cesar Sayoc, allegedly sent 14 packages armed with explosives to several prominent Democrats.

Five of Sayoc’s targets, many of whom Donald Trump has repeatedly attacked verbally, are African American.

Sayoc allegedly mailed a pipe bomb to the Washington DC residence of former President Barack Obama, two pipe bombs mailed to Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) along with one each mailed to Sens. Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Kamala Harris (D-CA) and former Attorney General Eric Holder.

Though none of the explosives reached their intended targets, the first one discovered arrived at the home of billionaire philanthropist George Soros in Bedford, New York. The home of former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was also targeted along with the home of former Vice President Joe Biden.

Sayoc also allegedly sent pipe bombs to former CIA Director John Brennan, former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, billionaire Tom Steyer and actor Robert DeNiro. All have been consistently critical of President Trump. Steyer has called for Trump’s impeachment and funded many progressive Democrats running for office.

Though no one was injured in the attempted attacks and many of the pipe bombs were intercepted by law enforcement in transit, the story of attempted murder and domestic terrorism sent a chill through the political world that was followed by calls to bring down the temperature of political discourse.

The unexpected and potentially violent October surprise hit the news only two weeks before Election Day. Sayoc, who has a criminal record, was caught in Florida after the FBI traced a fingerprint on a pipe bomb he allegedly sent to Rep. Waters.

“I am appreciative of the law enforcement entities who intercepted the package and are investigating this matter.

I unequivocally condemn any and all acts of violence and terror,” Waters wrote in a statement on October 24.

been consistently critical of minorities while at the same time failing to call out xenophobia and racism. On October 22, he defined himself as “a nationalist” at a rally in Houston, Texas.

A well-documented uptick in political violence has been documented since Trump took office in 2016.

False Affidavits in Little Rock Drug Raid Cases

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — This week national civil rights attorney Ben Crump and co-counsel Michael Laux presented a new video with clear and compelling information about Roderick Talley’s experience with police corruption and “no-knock” drug raids that have disproportionately affected Black residents of Little Rock, Arkansas.

The footage from Talley’s home security cameras contains evidence that the Little Rock Police Department falsified affidavits for “no-knock” raids — Talley was not home when police came to his door the first time, yet the affidavit requesting a “no-knock” warrant reads otherwise. The new video released this week by Attorney Crump shows the full story. Since Talley has come forward, others have presented similar stories.

“Mr. Talley is just one of many citizens who have been wrongfully treated by the LRPD. The ones who were supposed to protect him from harm were the same people who lied on government documents, barged into his home with explosives, and caused him immense trauma,” Crump said.

“Mr. Talley rightly refused to let this injustice remain unknown. We will continue to speak truth to power for Mr. Talley and all others who have fallen prey to this heinous trend.”

explosives. Talley was arrested August 10, 2017, by Little Rock police after a “no-knock” drug raid permitted by a judge based on a false affidavit. Talley’s charges were later dropped, and many others who’ve come forward have also had their charges dropped.

“So far we have been able to get four more people out of jail, in addition to Mr. Talley, and get their charges dropped. With the help of Attorney Laux, we will get the trumped-up charges dropped on the other 128 falsely accused brothers and sisters,” Crump said. “We must remember: Until all of us are free, none of us are free.”

Talley has filed a lawsuit against the city and has also retained representation by Attorneys Crump and Laux.

Talley’s case received national attention when it was covered in a Washington Post column, which revealed LRPD was “routinely violating the Fourth Amendment rights of Little Rock residents.” LRPD gained “no-knock” warrants and dangerous explosives easily, even though many of the raids proved unfruitful.

4 Charged after Toddler Spotted Crossing Street with Beer STEELTON, Pa. (AP) _ Police in Pennsylvania have charged four adults after an officer spotted a toddler running across the street carrying an open beer.

WHP-TV reports an officer in the borough of Steelton was on patrol earlier this month when he saw two children under the age of two running across a street without shoes on.

The officer then noticed one of the children was also carrying a full, open beer.

Four people have been charged with endangering the welfare of children in the borough just south of Harrisburg.

California Blasts Trump Plan to Rollback Emissions Standards SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) _ California officials are blasting the Trump administration's plan to freeze vehicle emissions standards, saying it threatens public health and the environment.

The California Air Resources Board on Friday submitted more than 400 pages of analysis rejecting the administration's proposal and the research behind it.

The agency's executive officer, Richard Corey, writes that the administration's proposal “does not even accord with basic principles of reasoned decision-making and must be withdrawn.”

California and the Obama administration agreed to national standards requiring the fleet of new automobiles to get 36 miles per gallon by 2025. That's 10 miles per gallon higher than the current requirement.

The Trump administration has proposed freezing the standards starting in 2021. Administration officials say it would lower vehicle prices and get safer cars on the road.

The Struggles of Black Women in Brazil

The 26-year-old has worked since the age of 16, has been a lawyer for two years, and is finishing her first postgraduate course and has already started the second one, according to the blog, BlackWomenofBrazil, which is dedicated to highlighting the inequities, successes and other issues concerning black women in the country.

Even with her experience, Silva, a young lawyer found it a struggle to get back into the job market.

Unemployment in Brazil affects pretos e pardos (blacks and browns) more than brancos (whites). Of the 13 million unemployed, 8.3 million belong to the group – 63.7 percent of the total, or two out of three workers without a job — according to a national survey released last year.

Throughout 2017, when unemployment levels hit a record, Silva sent 67 resumes and was invited to 20 interviews. She received only one job offer.

“They called me to pay me R$1,000 (USD$308). I thought it was absurd and I didn’t go,” she said.

According to the national survey, the average remuneration of pretos e pardos is 44.4 percent lower than that of brancos.

In Silva’s assessment, the proposal of $ 1,000 per month is well below the market average for the same function, which, according to her, is around R$6,000.

Struggles like that of Silva’s are why Black Women of Brazil has pushed the documentary, “Cores Pretas,” which means “Black Colors.”

Released earlier this year, the film highlights racism and the empowerment of black women in Brazil.

Directed by journalist Stella Tó Freitas, “Cores Pretas” focuses on the perspectives of five black women who discuss their experiences coping with a lifetime filled with racism.

Celebrated Author Ntozake Shange Dies at 70

She was best known for her much celebrated Obie Award-winning play, “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow is Enuf.”

“To our extended family and friends, it is with sorrow

that we inform you that our loved one, Ntozake Shange, passed away peacefully in her sleep in the early morning of October 27, 2018. Memorial information / details will follow at a later date,” her Twitter account announced.

Shange, who turned 70 on October 18, had suffered multiple strokes over the last few years. She died in her sleep.

“I write for young girls of color, for girls who don’t even exist yet, so that there is something there for them when they arrive,” Shange once said.

“Zake was a woman of extravagance and flourish, and she left quickly without suffering,” said her sister Ifa Bayeza, who was also a writer. “It’s a huge loss for the world. I don’t think there’s a day on the planet when there’s not a young woman who discovers herself through the words of my sister,” she added.

Her death is a “a major shift in the cosmos,” said Sarah Bellamy said on October 27. “Ntozake Shange invited us to marvel at the resiliency and power that women of color harness in order to survive a hostile world. She invited us to practice the ritual of loving ourselves.”

Shange was also the author of the novels Sassafrass, Cypress & Indigo, Liliane, and Betsey Brown, a novel about a Black girl who runs away from home. Shange was also awarded a Guggenheim Foundation fellowship an in April 2016, Barnard College announced the acquisition of Shange’s papers.

But her most celebrated and famous work, was the 20-part poem depicting the lives of women of color. The poem was made into the stage play and a published book in 1977. In 2010, Tyler Perry made her work into a film entitled a “For Colored Girls.”

The recent book by Donna Brazile, Yolanda Caraway, Leah Daughtry, Minyon Moore, and Veronica Chambers, entitled “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Politics,” was a play on the famous work by Shange.

Another Year Older, Another Year Wiser, Another Year Closer to Voting

BY BIVIANA URIBE South Kern Sol For my 16th birthday in September, I celebrated with other high school students from Delano at DoSomething. org’s GOTV bootcamp in Los Angeles. I was excited to learn about ways we can encourage people younger than 18 years old to pre-register to vote. The whole event was a success. I was able to pre-register to vote, and now I’m looking forward to voting when I turn 18.

Because of that experience, I’ve been working to register and pre-register first-time voters. Even though I’m not a student at Delano High School, I helped Delano High students register and pre-register at the school’s homecoming football game. That night we registered more than a dozen students.

It is really important to get the youth to vote. We need to be aware of the candidate’s intentions. We need to be educated and vote for people who share and fight for our same values — values that address the many issues going on in our city, county, state, country and world.

Some people assume young people don’t care about politics, but that isn’t true. Politics matter to me. I’ve attended rallies and marches and learned about the issues that impact my family and I. In September, I went to a rally in Bakersfield at the Mesa Verde ICE Processing Facility. The organizers and attendees were rallying for family members in the detention center. One of the rally leaders asked if anyone wanted to speak. I went up there to express how I felt and why the rally meant so much to my family and I. As I began to share my stories, I felt myself getting nervous and emotional.

Last year at Walmart, I experienced something uncomfortable that made me feel fearful for families like mine who are undocumented. My mom and I were checking out, and I heard someone say, “Build that wall.” I was in utter shock. My heart was pounding. My stomach dropped.

I stood there stunned, not knowing whether to cry or to respond. I was too dismayed to say anything and left the store upset and shaken to my core.

For my last birthday, I told my parents all I wanted

was go to SeaWorld. They looked at me with sorrow in their eyes. I didn’t understand why my parents were hesitant. It took me a little while, but eventually, I realized my parents were fearful of the checkpoints in San Diego. No parent should fear that one day their child will be taken away, and no child should ever experience getting a parent ripped away from their life.

But it happens. At school, I hear of other parents being deported. I was devastated when Santos Hilario and Marcelina Garcia died in a car crash in March after fleeing ICE agents on their way to work. For months after the tragedy, my family limited our trips outside the house as much as possible. We cut back on grocery shopping and were hesitant to answer the door if someone knocked.

I have a younger sister who is five years old. I’m in constant fear that one day she will wake up without my parents beside her — not knowing where they have gone or when they will return. I fear that my 12-year-old brother will not get to hug and kiss my parents every morning before he goes to school. I don’t want to witness my siblings go through such pain and confusion. I fear having to become my siblings second mother and not knowing how to fill that role. I fear losing my parents. What would that do to us? How would that change us? I hate imagining our lives without our parents, but I think about it anyway.

That’s why birthdays are so important to me now.

They remind me of the sacrifices my parents made for me and my siblings.

Each year that passes, I’m closer to being able to exercise my right to vote. Voting is my way of bringing justice to parents and families who have experienced discrimination because they don’t have a piece of paper stating that they can be here “legally.”

Soon, my siblings and I will be the voice on the ballot that my parents don’t have access to. I do this for them.

I do this for all the undocumented people in the United States who are here to work and provide a better life for their family.

Homecoming Results in Bragging Rights Amongst Childhood Friends

By DeShun Jackson Contributing Sports Writer On Saturday October 27, in an exhibition men’s basketball game between Cal State Bakersfield (CSUB) and Long Beach State (CSULB) we find two longtime teammates on opposing sides for the the first time.

CSUB sophomore Justin McCall (6’5, 205) and Long Beach sophomore Jordan Roberts (6’8, 200) have been friends since they first met at Berkshire Elementary in the 4th grade. They were teammates in elementary in both football and basketball. Then once again teammates at Stonecreek Jr. High in both basketball and volleyball. And finally, teammates once again at Ridgeview High School where as seniors they led the Wolfpack to a CIF Div. II section title. The pair even signed their D-1 scholarship award letters on the same day.

“It was fun, I finally got to talk mess to him outside of practice,” says McCall when asked how it was to play against Roberts for the first time.

Roberts on playing in his hometown family and friends, ”It was very sentimental for me, and I really appreciate it because I don’t get it all the time being out in Long Beach.”

The last time the two played on the same court together was in the NorCal High School All-Star game April 2nd, 2017. In the game Justin McCall was awarded the Offensive player of the game award while Jordan Roberts received the Defensive player of the game award, the two where always a tough tandem to be reckoned with.

Now starting their second season as college players Roberts says, “This year I feel more experienced…I know what I can do and what I can’t do.” McCall claims to be “Much more confident and having a better understanding of my purpose.”

In a very competitive game, the two Bakersfield natives produced for their teams in front of the Icardo Center crowd. McCall finished with 11 points 1 steal and 3 rebounds. Roberts led both teams with 10 rebounds to go along with 14 points and 2 steals. Long Beach came away with a 73-70 victory over CSUB. All proceeds from ticket sales for the game went towards the Red Cross’ Fire Relief Fund and the efforts for the California wildfires. It is the second year the two teams have participated in the game, last year Roberts was unable to play due to injury.

High Speed Rail Settles Shafter Lawsuit

By KATHLEEN RONAYNE Associated Press SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) _ California's highspeed rail authority settled a lawsuit Wednesday with a small Central Valley city the train is expected to run through.

The settlement with Shafter, California, doesn't offer a dollar figure but says the rail authority must reimburse the city for up to $200,000 worth of staff time. The city of roughly 19,000 people filed the lawsuit under the California Environmental Quality Act, arguing the rail authority didn't do enough to mitigate environmental or other effects

in its proposed route through the city.

It brings an end to one of seven environmental lawsuits filed against the ambitious project to build a highspeed train between San Francisco and Los Angeles. One is still pending.

Separately, another lawsuit is scheduled for a court hearing Friday. Plaintiffs in the lawsuit argue a law passed in 2016 improperly changes how California can spend nearly $10 billion in bonds voters approved for the high-

speed rail in 2008. The law says the bond money can be spent electrifying existing lines to make them ready for high-speed rail.

The project has faced repeated cost overruns and delays. It's now projected to cost $77 billion and be completed by 2033. A 114-mile segment is under construction from Fresno to Bakersfield through the Central Valley.

Part of that segment is planned to go through Shafter parallel to a freight line that already runs through town,

City Manager Scott Hurlbert said. The freight line intersects the city in seven places, all along street level including near a school and public safety buildings.

An early high-speed rail proposal would have run the train along a similar route but on a raised viaduct, Hurlbert said. The city argued that would hinder its ability to make future changes to the freight line by “effectively creating a barrier that we couldn't go over or under,” he said.

As part of the settlement, the rail authority has agreed to help the city's separate pedestrian traffic from the path of the train in seven locations, even several where the highspeed rail won't be running.

“This agreement represents our continued commitment to working with regional partners to resolve issues that allow us to move the high-speed rail program forward,” Diana Gomez, Central Valley regional director for the rail authority, said in a statement.

Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown, who leaves office in January, has been a staunch defender of high-speed rail.

The next governor, either Democrat Gavin Newsom or Republican John Cox, likely won't be as enthusiastic.
