Adjust Your Finances as Life Happens A spending plan is a well-thought-out strategy that turns a budget into a manageable part of everyday life. If you already have a plan, what’s next? Most people understand the importance of sticking to a plan, but as your life changes and you work toward new goals, your spending habits will likely shift as well. When you don’t account for these changes, it’s easy to fall short of your goals. Learning to adapt to changes is key to creating a healthy relationship with your finances. Taking control of your money means customizing your plans to your needs, so it’s important to remember to be flexible and open to change. To make sure your spending plan works, track and adjust your spending on a regular basis. Here’s what that might look like. Know when to adjust your spending plan • Your income changes. This includes both increases and decreases: events like a promotion, a job loss, a raise, or other changes. • Your situation changes. This includes moving, getting married, having a child, or having a loved one pass away. • Your financial goals change. Maybe you’re ready to start saving for a wedding or a down payment on a house. Or, maybe you want to pay off student loans or credit card debt in the near future. Adjust expenses in your spending plan Look for opportunities within your expenses to make changes. Here’s how to do so: • Re-examine where your money is going. It’s valuable to keep regular tabs on how you are spending money. Keep an eye out for “lifestyle creep” — these are small changes you’ve gradually made, such as going out to eat more, or making slightly more expensive purchases. Perhaps you’ve been promoted at work and want to splurge a little on yourself with new clothes. It’s OK to enjoy your accomplishments, but be sure to think about how this may affect the rest of your spending plan in the longterm. Look for balance: if you want to start spending 10% of your income on clothing or entertainment when you used to spend 5%, then look for ways to cut in other areas. • Find opportunities to reduce spending. As you re-evaluate your plan, look for things you continue to pay for but don’t actually use. This might be a subscription or service that doesn’t offer what you need anymore. For example, if you recently got married, you and your spouse may want
PITTSBORO, N.C. (AP) – Police in North Carolina say they’ve arrested two people after a “physical altercation” at a protest over a Confederate statue slated to be removed. The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office said Saturday it arrested Calvin James Megginson and Timothy James Osborn on charges related to the altercation. Both were released and are due in court next month. A pro-Confederate group is trying to stop removal of the statue, which has been stationed outside the county courthouse in Pittsboro since 1907. The county’s plans to remove the monument have sparked protests and counter-protests that have resulted in multiple arrests in the past month.

to consider consolidating your subscriptions to help cut costs. Be sure to review expenses that are coming out of your account automatically that you may have forgotten about. • Find opportunities for discounts and deals. Every year or so, take another look at what you’re paying for items like insurance, internet, or other utilities. You could benefit from finding a new service provider or negotiating a lower rate. Perhaps you’ve even shopped at a store enough that you’re eligible for discounts. Being aware of these

opportunities can help with your financial goals. Small changes like this can add up and make a big difference when you’re working toward a goal such as saving up for a down payment on a house or paying off student loans debts. Don’t forget to make adjustments to your plan as you go through these steps. To be valuable, your spending plan needs to be flexible. By both meeting current financial goals and knowing when it’s time to adjust, you can make sure you’re getting the most out of your resources.
Washington, D.C. – Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), along with Democratic Policy and Communications Committee Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Ranking Member Sherrod Brown (DOH), and Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR), a member of the Senate Democrats’ Special Committee on the Climate Crisis, today unveiled the Clean Cars For America Climate Proposal, a bold new initiative to accelerate the transition to net-zero carbon emissions by mid-century—a target scientists say we must reach to avoid the most devastating effects of climate change, but are currently off track to meet—by making clean cars and charging infrastructure accessible and affordable to all Americans. Leader Schumer’s Clean Cars for America proposal has a broad coalition of support, from such stakeholders as leading environmental groups like the Sierra Club, the NRDC, and the League of Conservation Voters, as well as labor unions like the United Auto Workers and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, and large auto companies like Ford and General Motors. The initiative would incentivize the transition to clean vehicles by providing significant discounts for clean vehicles when trading in a gas-powered vehicle, establishing a new grant program to states and localities to ensure all Americans have access to charging infrastructure, and providing robust incentives for manufacturers to build new factories or re-tool existing factories. The plan would result in 63 million fewer carbon-emitting cars. The plan is estimated to create tens of thousands of good-paying jobs in the United States. The Clean Cars For America Climate Initiative would accelerate the critical transition to net-zero carbon emissions by mid-century by making electric vehicles and charging infrastructure accessible to all Americans, regardless of where they live and work, and would firmly establish the United States as the global leader in electric vehicle and battery Continued on page A6
Umpire Dies at 63
WASHINGTON (AP) – Former major league umpire Chuck Meriwether, who was behind the plate when the Boston Red Sox ended their championship drought in 2004, died Saturday. He was 63. Commissioner Rob Manfred made the announcement hours before Game 4 of the World Series. Meriwether had been ill with cancer and died at home in Nashville, Tennessee. Meriwether called his first big league game in 1987, was promoted to the full-time American League staff in 1993 and worked for 18 years. He then became a major league umpire supervisor for nine years. Meriwether had the plate in Game 4 when the Red Sox ended their 86-year title absence by beating St. Louis at Busch Stadium. He also did the 2007 World Series when Boston swept Colorado. In addition, Meriwether got eight assignments in the Division Series, two in the League Championship Series and two All-Star Games. “Chuck Meriwether was an accomplished umpire on the field, a role model for our staff and a true gentleman in life,” Manfred said in a statement. “Chuck will be remembered for his genial manner and the outstanding example he set for others, particularly for African American umpires who followed him.” Earlier this month, major league umpire Eric Cooper died at 52, two weeks after working the ALDS between the New York Yankees and Minnesota.
University Apologizes After Tweet on Diversity
COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) – The University of Missouri athletic department has apologized and removed a tweet intended to promote the NCAA’s “diversity and inclusion week” after receiving complaints it was racially insensitive. The original post showed a graphic with four photos under the words “I am.” The white athletes described their career aspirations in the graphic, with one saying, “I am a future doctor.” The quotes attributed to a black athlete and athletics employee were “I Am an African American Woman” and “I Value Equality.” Former Missouri quarterback and Kansas City attorney Corby Jones, who is black, told The Kansas City Star’s editorial board that he was “outraged” over the words that were chosen. The athletic department said in a statement the “intent was to provide personal information about our students, but we failed.”
