Newscaster Out After MLK Slur ST. LOUIS (AP) – A St. Louis newscaster who has been off the air since uttering what he called an unintentional racial slur while talking about Martin Luther King Jr. in January is now out of a job. KTVI-TV general manager Kurt Krueger told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that the station and Kevin Steincross parted ways “by mutual agreement.’’ Krueger declined to provide any additional information, citing it as a personnel matter. Steincross does not have listed phone number. Steincross was discussing a tribute to the black civil rights leader on Jan. 17 when he referred to King as “Martin Luther coon Jr.’’ He apologized a few hours later, saying he accidentally misspoke. The NAACP had urged the station to fire Steincross .

By K.W. Bell Letter to the Editor Elijah Stevenson, the 10-year-old dinosaur enthusiast, who earned both First Place and Best of Show ribbons at the 2018 Kern County Fair, has done it again! He has now won two (2) First Place ribbons and the prestigious Judge’s Choice Plaque at the 2019 Kern County Fair for “Elijah’s Dinosaur Island”! His last year’s Dinosaur World entry, said to be one of the most popular hobby exhibits’, captured the hearts of children and adults alike. This year’s Fair entry is a spectacular dinosaur island featuring waterways, bridges, lights and a super cool prehistoric themed car track that meanders through the island. Tyrannosaurus Rex (T-Rex), Brachiosaurus, Triceratops, Allosaurus (just to name a few) roam the island, which is patterned after the science fiction Jurassic films. Elijah’s island is a view of what the world would look like with man, woman and some of the most fascinating creatures that ever lived, co-exist. The exhibit captures the hearts of all who view it.
LAREDO, Texas (AP) – The U.S. Border Patrol says agents at a checkpoint in Texas found 53 migrants who had entered the country illegally hiding in the back of a sweltering tractor-trailer. The Border Patrol said Friday that the migrants were found Tuesday during a search of the truck at a checkpoint on Interstate 35 north of Laredo. The migrants, who were from Mexico, Ecuador, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras, and the driver, who is a U.S. citizen, were arrested and processed. The Border Patrol says the temperature inside the trailer was 105 degrees Fahrenheit (41 degrees Celsius). Officials say those on board were evaluated and no one required medical attention. On Sept. 11, a U.S. citizen was arrested in Arizona after 31 Mexicans who were illegally in the U.S. were found in the tractor-trailer he was driving.

By Stacy M. Brown NNPA Newswire Correspondent Civil rights icon Angela Davis has earned induction into the National Women’s Hall of Fame. The activist, educator, and former Black Panther earned the honors because of her dedicated work during the civil rights movement and Davis’ continued fight to secure equal rights and social justice for women. “At each significant turning point in my life, when I was introduced to the world of progressive political activism, anti-racist prison abolition struggles, when I myself was on the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted List and ended up spending two years in jail and on trial, when I became involved in many international solidarity efforts, intersectional feminist movements, I’ve always been one
of many,” Davis said during her induction speech. “My own consciousness has always been enabled by shared endeavors and collective consciousness,” she said. The National Women’s Hall of Fame was founded in 1969 and is the nation’s oldest membership organization and museum dedicated to honoring and celebrating the achievements of distinguished American women, according to its website. In pursuit of its mission of “Showcasing Great Women…Inspiring All,” the National Women’s Hall of Fame honors the women of the past, relates the history of Continued on page A2
SEATTLE (AP) – A lawsuit by a black employee against a federal law enforcement agency claims her career was impacted after she filed a complaint against a white supervisor with a Nazi-themed tattoo. The Seattle Times reported Sunday that the lawsuit says the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives withdrew Cheryl Bishop’s appointment to its Washington, D.C., headquarters after she filed a complaint about Bradford Devlin, a senior supervisor in the bureau’s Seattle division. Devlin says his Nazi tattoo is a ``war trophy’’ from his undercover work with a white-supremacist motorcycle gang in Ohio in the early 2000s. The tattoo and a series of emails sent from Devlin’s ATF account mocking black people and then-President Barack Obama are key elements in Bishop’s lawsuit filed in 2018. A trial is scheduled to begin Oct. 28.
