PDoing O General Motors More ictu bs e Network (GMAAN) and director of facility engineering and manufacturing operations, McGruder sat on a transportation brain trust panel at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s Annual Legislative Conference on Thursday, Sept. 13, where she told a highly-engaged audience that the automotive giant is committed to zero crashes, zero emissions, and zero congestion.

“When I first heard that, I was like ‘Oh my God, that’s awesome,’” McGruder said during a panel discussion titled, “Workforce Development & Emerging Technologies.”

Sponsored by U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), the panel included former U.S. Secretary of Transportation Rodney Slater; MWAA CEO Jack Potter; LYFT senior public policy manager Rena Davis; WMATA director Nalini Mani; Purple Line Transit Partners CEO Fred Craig; and HNTB Mid-Atlantic President Diana Mendes.

After the session, McGruder told NNPA Newswire that General Motors is at a point where they now have African American Ancestry employees at higher levels in “effectively all of our business functions.”

“They are being enabled to make significant contributions and add value,” McGruder said.

“If I look at where we were even 10 years ago, we have people in place but they weren’t necessarily in positions where they were changing the game and when I look at it today what I absolutely see is we have the blueprint … and when we think about making the pivot, we are making a tremendous pivot in manufacturing at General Motors and they’re leading it,” she said.

McGruder continued: “Also, when I consider other functions like product engineering and product development, we are grooming African American ancestry employees in different areas of product development so they can start sharing what they know in other areas.”

Additionally, with propulsion systems such as electric vehicles, GM has leaders in executive roles that are also moving throughout the system and the entire organization who are growing.

Further, Mary Barra, General Motors Chairman and CEO, has laid out the corporate vision for the company of a future with zero crashes, zero emissions and zero congestion. “This vision aligns with our corporate mission to earn customers for life by building brands that inspire passion and loyalty through not only breakthrough technologies, but also by serving and improving the communities in which we live and work around the world,” McGruder said.

“As such, General Motors is investing in strategic partnerships and communities that it believes will help make this possible.”

General Motors’ success and commitment hasn’t gone unnoticed. At its annual convention in Norfolk, VA., last June, the NNPA honored General Motors with the 2018 National Meritorious Leadership Award.

Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr., the president and CEO of the NNPA, said the NNPA enthusiastically presented the award to the automaker because of its commitment to the African American community, its work with the NNPA to identify, nurture, mentor and provide academic fellowships to the next generation of Black journalism scholars across the nation through the Discover the Unexpected program.

Dr. Chavis noted that General Motors is the single-largest advertiser with the NNPA and one of the largest financial supporters of the trade group.

On Thursday, Chavis reiterated his enthusiasm for GM. “The NNPA reaffirms its strong partnership with General Motors,” Dr. Chavis said.

“The fact of the matter is, when it comes to issues of diversity and inclusion, General Motors is practicing what it preaches. Therefore, the future engagement between GM and the NNPA is emerging in the right direction at the right time,” he said.

McGruder expressed mutual admiration for the Black Press.

“The relationship with NNPA is very important for a lot of reasons. The company itself, General Motors, absolutely values all media particularly when we look at African

NNPA Honors 2019 Leadership Awards

The National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) 2018 National Leadership Awards Reception provided what one might expect when California Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters, Texas Democratic Rep. Al Green, and South Carolina’s Jim Clyburn make up one-third of the recipients.

“We are here to recognize our brothers and sisters who are truly national leaders and who stand for freedom, justice and equality not when its popular, but when it’s not so popular to be freedom fighters,” said NNPA President and CEO Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis Jr. In her typical fiery but still eloquent way, Waters spoke passionately about she and other Democrats’ mission to impeach President Donald Trump – though, like all of the recipients, she never mentioned the president by name only referring to him as “Number 45.”

Green, the veteran civil rights advocate who’s serving his seventh term in Congress, picked up where Waters left off. “I promise that I have not given up on impeachment,” Green said. “We have a president who is not only unfit for the presidency, but a man who is unfit for any office in the United States of America.”

Clyburn, who arrived in Congress in 1993 and is the third-ranking Democrat, followed his colleagues and helped to drive home their impeachment argument. “I learned early what it means to challenge the system. I learned from my dad what it means to have the power of

the almighty vote,” Clyburn said. “If the [midterm] election goes the way it seems like it is, you will have the best years of your lives going forward.”

Waters, Green and Clyburn were among the nine national leaders and activists honored by the NNPA on Friday, Sept. 14. A trade organization representing America’s more than 220 African American-owned newspapers — with more than 22 million weekly subscribers, the NNPA began the Leadership Awards in 2014. The awards honor individuals who are national leaders in their specific fields and whose actions have helped to improve the quality of life for African Americans and others.

Rapist Hired by Husband to Rape Wife Facing Life

TEHACHAPI, Calif. (AP) – A man who bound, gagged and raped a Southern California woman at her husband’s request has been sentenced to 118 years to life in prison.

The Bakersfield Californian says Haliki Green was sentenced Friday for the 2016 attack.

Prosecutors say the woman’s then-husband, Russell Higgins, hired Green for $200 to rape his wife after the men had taken drugs in a motel room. The woman was attacked in her Tehachapi home. Her husband held her down during the assault.

Green said he was told the woman had agreed to a rape role-playing scenario.

At Friday’s hearing, the woman said she suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, doesn’t sleep much and has nightmares of being attacked when she does.

Higgins is serving a sentence of 53 years to life for the attack.

Deputy Suspected of Being on Drugs While on Duty

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (AP) – Authorities say an on-duty California sheriff’s deputy has been arrested on suspicion of being under the influence of drugs.

The Kern County Sheriff’s Office says Deputy Lewis White was working patrol in the Bakersfield area at the time of his arrest on Saturday.

It wasn’t known Sunday if White has an attorney.

Officials didn’t immediately say what led to the arrest.

The Sheriff’s Office investigated the alleged drug use, and the California Highway Patrol investigated whether White drove under the influence. Officials say the CHP couldn’t determine if White’s driving was impaired.

KBAK-TV reports White was booked into jail and will be placed on administrative leave during the investigation.

City News Service reports the victims, believed to be about 18 years old, were hospitalized in stable condition after the shooting Saturday in South LA. Sergeant A. Kaspian says they had been arguing online about a gang or a territory and went to settle the dispute when they were shot.

Police are searching for two gunmen thought to be between 18 and 20 years old who fled the scene.

Do Black Farmers Support Kavanaugh for Supreme Court? Depends on who you ask

By Lee Eric Smith, Special to the NNPA Newswire Black farmers are throwing their full support behind Judge Brett Kavanaugh, President Donald Trump’s nominee for U.S. Supreme Court.

Black farmers also believe Kavanaugh would be a disaster for black America — including black farmers.

And if you’re confused after reading those two sentences, it’s because where black farmers stand on Kavanaugh’s nomination depends on who you ask — and which organization of black farmers they represent.

In mid-August, the Black Farmers and Agriculturalists Association (BFAA) sent a glowing letter to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, encouraging them to approve Kavanaugh’s nomination — based on Kavanaugh’s favorable ruling in a BFAA matter in October 2017.

“Kavanaugh rendered a decision in favor of Black farmers on the merits of the evidence... (He) was prepared, attentive and had command of the facts,” said BFAA president Thomas Burrell, in a letter to Sen. Chuck Grassley on

Dr. Elsie Scott said more women are pursuing other areas of elected office. “Since Trayvon Martin was murdered, we noticed more interest in prosecutors and more women running for prosecutors,” Scott said. “There are a number of Black women saying they don’t like the way they’re being prosecuted. What we find is women are winning in districts that are not predominately Black. If you look at the women of the Congressional Black Caucus, the majority of them now are in districts that are not majority Black,” she said.

nation, said president John W. Boyd, Jr. “We’re absolutely opposed to it,” Boyd told The New Tri-State Defender. “He would be bad for African-American farmers. Bad for African-Americans. Bad for this country.”

Decisions, Decisions In a TSD interview, Burrell said BFAA’s support of Kavanaugh was rooted in a USDA program aiming to compensate discrimination against women and Latino farmers.

Those who believe they’d been discriminated against needed to file a claim with claims administrator Epiq Systems to be considered for a cash reward.

But Burrell said that by announcing a claims process that seemed to exclude African-American men, the USDA had violated Title VI of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. In part, Title VI reads: “Programs that receive Federal funds cannot distinguish among individuals on the basis of race, color or national origin, either directly or indirectly, in the types, quantity, quality or timeliness of program services, aids or benefits that they provide or the manner in which they provide them.”

While verifying claimant eligibility, Epiq told hopeful claimants that African-American men were not eligible for the program -- which led BFAA to sue USDA for discrimination, since Epiq was acting on behalf of a federal agency.

The lawsuit, “Boyland v. USDA,” suffered a blow when a federal judge ruled that the USDA had not violated the plaintiff’s civil rights. BFAA, on behalf of Boyland and other plaintiffs, appealed the case to the U.S. Court of Appeals. The USDA filed a motion of summary affirmation -- in essence asking the court to accept the lower court’s ruling without hearing arguments.

However, the Court of Appeals -- including current Supreme Court nominee Kavanaugh -- ruled against summary affirmation in October 2017. The BFAA and Boyland case will get another day in court.

“When we found out that President Trump was nominating Judge Kavanaugh, we thought it would be fitting, his politics notwithstanding, that we had some duty to show that this person upheld the rights of black farmers and their heirs,” Burrell said.

“In a Supreme Court Justice, we should be looking for evidence that someone has a proclivity for upholding the Constitution,” Burrell continued. “That should be the measuring stick regardless of whether a judge is Democrat or Republican, white or black. If race were a motivating factor for this judge, then he would have ruled against us in this case. What better proof is there that he will uphold the Constitution?”

The OTHER Black Farmers However, Boyd, who leads the Virginia-based NBFA, is firmly opposed to Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court. “I

read the emails released by Sen. Cory Booker,” Boyd said.

“I don’t think Kavanaugh would be a good fit for America.”

And while Boyd wouldn’t name any specific people or organizations, he lamented that misinformation about black farmer lawsuits is giving families false hope that a government check is on the way.

“The Black Farmers case is closed and settled,” said Boyd, referring to the famous Pigford ruling of 2010. “I know there were some farmers who didn’t file in time, or it was determined that they weren’t eligible, and I’m sorry about that. I really am. But there’s just a lot of bad information out there.

“There’s no pot of money that will compensate African-American farmers,” Boyd continued. “President Obama settled all of that already. I was there.”

Boyd reiterated that the Boyland lawsuit is not only completely different from the Pigford case, the USDA program under fire in the Boyland suit is designed to compensate women and Latino farmers and was never intended to redress discrimination against black farmers.

“We take calls all day long from people who believe there’s money,” Boyd said. “We believe the parties involved have a responsibility to give accurate information. There are a lot of confused elderly African-Americans out here who believe there’s money out there to tap and it’s just not true. There’s no pot of money that will compensate the African-American farmer.”

The two organizations have a contentious relationship, if not a confrontational one.

Boyd and the NBFA fear that farmers are being solicited to pay dues to participate in the Boyland case — with no shot at a USDA payout. Meanwhile, the BFAA refuses to give up the fight, and alleges that the NBFA is at least partially financed by the USDA. “They can say the case is settled all they want,” said Bishop David Allen Hall, a COGIC leader who serves as ecumenical advisor to BFAA. “Unlike NBFA, the federal government is not paying BFAA. We shoulder the cost of legal fees, the lawyers -- our members pay their dues and that’s what we use them for.”

Hall said that he and Burrell will return to Washington for court on Oct. 1. That’s when the Boyland suit will be presented before a “merits panel” which will decide if the suit proceeds, and if so, what possible payouts may be.

And as for BFAA’s endorsement of Kavanaugh ...

“We’ve looked at his integrity and he seemed to be ruling in these cases according to law,” Hall said. “He seems to have an air of fairness. Obviously, we don’t want anyone who will hurt the nation.

“But going strictly on the merits of our case, he ruled that there had been discrimination,” Hall continued. “Why would I not give the man a chance?”

Opposition to the Violence Against Women Act Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson issued the following statement on the 14th anniversary of the Violence Against Women Act to highlight Rep. Ron DeSantis’ opposition to this landmark legislation: “Mr. DeSantis’ vote against the Violence Against Women Act in 2013 is disgraceful. Reauthorization of this landmark legislation had been passed without major opposition for nearly two decades since it was introduced.

By refusing to join with an overwhelming majority of his colleagues to protect women against gendered violence and fund vital programs that offer key support services to victims, DeSantis showed his true colors – and why he is unfit to serve as Florida’s next governor.

“VAWA was passed in response to crisis levels of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking – issues, that I would hope would receive bipartisan support. In fact, Mr. DeSantis’ no vote in 2013 aligned him with the rouge, extremist faction of the republican party.

“Make no mistake, DeSantis’ stance on VAWA is consistent with his track record and his character. From his prominent position within the far-right freedom caucus and staunch Trumpism, it is clear that he does not share the views of the majority of Floridians.

“His opposition to VAWA is just one of the many reasons I was not at all surprised by the recent disturbing reports of speaking engagements DeSantis participated in in conjunction with prominent white supremacists.

“His decision to help give a platform to racist demagogues like Steve Bannon and Milo Yiannopoulos is simply one more indictment of his judgment and character on a long list of reasons why voters cannot trust him.

“If elected, DeSantis would not be a champion for women or for minorities. In fact, his elevation to the governorship would pose an existential threat to equal rights in Florida. “I fear what would come to pass if Mr. DeSantis was given the opportunity to exercise his vision on critical issues relating to gendered violence and civil rights.

Thankfully, I am confident that voters will reject his hateful message in November.”

Camille Cosby Appears at Judicial Conduct Review Board

By Stacy M. Brown NNPA Newswire Correspondent Camille Cosby has filed an official complaint about her husband’s judge to the Judicial Conduct Review Board of Pennsylvania.

One week before iconic comedian Bill Cosby faces sentencing in his assault case and just a week after defense attorneys filed a motion asking for Judge Steven T. O’Neill to recuse himself, Camille Cosby arrived in Harrisburg, Pa., seeking relief.

“The public, and Mr. Cosby, were entitled to know about Judge O’Neill’s bias before the judge made these rulings,” Camille Cosby said.

“That this judge would hide his bias and decide that his rival, the former D.A., could not be trusted to give

truthful testimony, shows that the judge let his own personal feelings override Mr. Cosby’s right to a fair trial. If a judge would do this in a case as high-profile as this one, then he cannot be trusted to be a fair judge for anyone else either.”

The former D.A. Bruce Castor told NNPA Newswire that he was “disgusted” by the prosecution of Cosby after himself promising the legend years ago that if he sat for a deposition and waived his right to remain silent, his words could never be used against him by any future D.A. The current D.A., Kevin Steele, ran an election campaign on the grounds that he was going to “get Cosby,” and received the support of Cosby accuser Andrea Constand in his campaign bid.

“What is happening to Cosby, as bad a man as he undoubtedly is, should never happen to anyone in America,” Castor said.

“I’m 36 years in the justice system, much of it at a pretty high level and I’m disgusted that any citizen entitled to the presumption of innocence has been treated this way,” Castor said.

Legal experts also have expressed concern that O’Neill refused to rule on whether the 12-year statute of limitations in the case expired, thus avoiding any prosecution of Cosby. Instead, he sent the matter to jurors, who didn’t appear to consider it.

Last week, Cosby’s attorney Joseph Green filed a motion aimed at getting O’Neill to recuse himself and appoint another judge to consider the case. Green argued that the case has to go back to when it started in early 2016 when Cosby repeatedly sought to get the charges thrown out and the judge to step down. O’Neill repeatedly denied his motions.

Green said recently uncovered facts suggest O’Neill was biased against Cosby from the beginning due to a long-standing political feud with Castor that the judge failed to disclose after he was assigned the case.

The feud stems from a late-1990s political campaign between Castor and O’Neill in which Castor supposedly engineered a campaign dirty trick that damaged O’Neill’s professional reputation, Cosby’s motion asserts.

This colored O’Neill’s rulings against Cosby’s motions, Green argued because Castor was an important witness who testified about why he decided not to prosecute Cosby on the Constand accusations in 2006.

“During the hearing, Judge O’Neill actually took over the direct examination of Mr. Castor, questioning him at some length before issuing a ruling that rejected Mr. Castor’s sworn testimony and wrongfully allowed the case to proceed,” the Cosby lawyers said in a statement.

“There is no way to view the judge’s conduct in this case as being consistent with the constitutional right to a

fair trial,” the statement said.

“Judge O’Neill must fully disclose the facts of that feud now. There is no other way to correct the injustice that has been done.”

A number of legal experts from Philadelphia, Delaware, Washington and as far away as Sacramento, San Francisco and Winnipeg, Canada, said O’Neill should recuse himself or at least postpone the Sept. 24 and Sept. 25 sentencing hearings he’s scheduled.

Camille Cosby’s appearance at the Judicial Conduct Review Board isn’t insignificant.

According to Pennsylvania rules, When the Board receives a complaint, the Board’s staff makes a preliminary inquiry. During this stage, you and other witnesses may be interviewed, and documents other than those provided with your complaint may be reviewed. Once there is sufficient information to conclude the preliminary inquiry, the full Board will review the complaint.

At this stage, the Board generally chooses to: Dismiss the complaint because it is clear that the allegations do not warrant disciplinary action against the accused judge; or Authorize a full investigation to determine if there is “clear and convincing evidence” of misconduct that warrants disciplinary action against the accused judge After a full investigation has been conducted, the Board makes another choice: Dismiss the complaint because there is not “clear and convincing evidence” of judicial misconduct; or if the Board believes that there is “clear and convincing evidence” of judicial misconduct, it may file formal charges against the accused judge with the Court of Judicial Discipline.

When asked today why she’s filing the complaint, Cosby said she’s filing it not only on behalf of Bill Cosby, “but for all citizens who may one day find themselves in O’Niell’s corrupt courtroom. This judge must be held accountable for his unethical behavior.”

By LYNN ELBER AP Television Writer LOS ANGELES (AP) – As Emmy Award nominees nervously wait to hear their name called, or not, there's more on the line at Monday night's ceremony than personal glory.

“Saturday Night Live” creator Lorne Michaels, producing his second Emmy telecast in 30 years, is tasked with turning viewership around after the 2017 show's audience of 11.4 million narrowly avoided the embarrassment of setting a new low.

The 8 p.m. EDT ceremony on NBC clearly bears his stamp, with “SNL” faux news anchors Michael Che and Colin Jost as hosts and familiar “SNL” faces, including Kate McKinnon and Alec Baldwin, as presenters and nominees. The long-running NBC sketch show, already the top Emmy winner ever with 71, could snare up to three more.

The pressure's on Michaels because NBC and other broadcasters are increasingly reliant on awards and other live events to draw viewers distracted by streaming and more 21st- century options. The networks, which air the Emmy telecast on a rotating basis, are so eager for the ad dollars it generates and its promotional value for fall shows that they endure online competitors sharing the stage.

It's Hulu's “The Handmaid's Tale” that's the defending best drama series champ, with HBO's two-time previous winner “Game of Thrones” the top rival. NBC's “This Is Us” is the only network nominee in the category. On the comedy side, the front-runners are FX's “Atlanta” and Amazon Prime Video’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” with ABC's “black-ish” the only network show in contention.

The telecast could see a number of record nominations

for people of color converted into awards, some historic.

Sandra Oh has the chance to become the first performer of Asian descent to win a lead drama actress trophy for the BBC America's spy thriller “Killing Eve.” Oh, who's Korean-Canadian, previously received five supporting actress nods for “Grey's Anatomy.”

Issa Rae of HBO's “Insecure” or ABC's “black-ish” star Tracee Ellis Ross could become the second African-American to win as best comedy actress, following Isabel Sanford (1981, “The Jeffersons”) by 37 years. The field, including Rachel Brosnahan of “Mrs. Maisel,” is wide open, with sixtime Julia Louis-Dreyfus and her HBO series, “Veep,” sitting these Emmys out for scheduling reasons.

If the show hits a lull there's a good chance politics will shake it up. “Weekend Update” anchors Che and Jost regularly traffic in political satire on “SNL,” and awards ceremonies have become a routine forum for celebrities to share their views on current events. It's a trend embraced

by Hollywood, at least publicly.

“I think if you're given a forum and people are listening and you got something to say, particularly this day and age, say it,” said Ed Harris, up for best drama actor for the sci-fi drama “Westworld.”

Yeardley Smith, an Emmy winner for voicing Lisa on “The Simpsons,” said she doesn't object when winners use the spotlight to say more than “thank you.”

“I don't think it's inappropriate,” Smith said. “I think that you do need to strike a balance. I think if you're truly passionate about something, anything, that if you have a platform, you almost have a moral obligation to speak up.”

(AP) _ Apple unveiled three new iPhones on Wednesday, including its biggest and most expensive model yet, as the company seeks to widen the product's appeal amid slowing sales.

CEO Tim Cook showed off the iPhone XS Max, which has a bigger screen than the one on last year's dramatically designed model , the iPhone X. It'll cost about $1,100, topping the iPhone X, which at $1,000 seemed jaw-dropping at the time. An updated iPhone X, now called the XS, stays at $1,000.

As with the iPhone X, both new phones have screens that run from edge to edge, an effort to maximize the display without making the phone too awkward to hold. The screen needs no backlight, so black would appear as truly black rather than simply dark. The Max model looks to be about the size of the iPhone 8 Plus, though the screen size is much larger.

21 _ with orders open the week before _ represents Apple's attempt to feed consumers' appetite for increasingly larger screens as they rely on smartphones to watch and record video and to take photos wherever they are.

By making more expensive iPhones, Apple has been able to boost its profits despite waning demand as people upgrade phones less frequently. IPhones fetched an average price of $724 during the April-June period, a nearly 20 percent increase from a year earlier.

Apple also showed off a cheaper iPhone, called the iPhone XR. It has a traditional, lower-quality screen and an aluminum body; it's physically smaller than the iPhone 8 Plus but has a bigger screen. It'll cost roughly $750 and come out on Oct. 26.

All three new models join the iPhone X in getting rid of the home button to make room for more screen. They will have facial-recognition technology to unlock the device.

Although it didn't sell quite as analysts anticipated, the iPhone X still emerged as the most popular in Apple's lineup, according to Cook. That emboldened the company to aim an even more expensive device at the affluent households that tend to gravitate to its products, especially in the U.S. and Europe.

For everyone else, many of whom are still using iPhones they purchased several years ago, there's the XR.

“I am going to go out on a limb and say the XR is going to become Apple's top-selling iPhone,” said analyst Patrick Moorhead of Moor Insights. “It is a smart strategy to keep more people in the Apple ecosystem and get even more people to come into it.”

The next major update to the iOS will be released next Tuesday, followed a week later by a Mac software update.

Both will be free to install.

Apple also announced updates that push its Apple Watch further into medical device territory. It has a larger screen and a built-in heart sensor that the company said can detect irregular heart rates and perform an electrocardiogram. The latter feature has been cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the company said.

Ben Wood of CCS Insight said getting U.S. regulatory clearance for that is a milestone that underscores the company's leadership in health and fitness. Typically, smartwatches are marketed as consumer devices, not medical ones needing clearance.

These features will be available to U.S. customers later this year, but Apple did not say when it would make it to the rest of the world.

In addition, Apple said the Series 4 Apple Watch will also be able to detect when someone falls _ and can tell the difference between a trip and a fall. If it detects a fall and the user doesn't respond in a minute, it'll automatically call for help. This feature may be especially attractive to older people or those with elderly parents worried about falling when no one is around to help.

Climate Change is a Public Health Crises: Blacks Mostly Absent from the Conversation

By Simeon Gant Special to California Black Media Partners Governor Jerry Brown and his team gathered more than four thousand people from around the world in San Francisco for three days last week to sound the alarm: Climate Change is a public health issue!

Hundreds of people protested and disrupted this gathering of environmentalist, policymakers and business executives because - wait for it – the Governor hasn’t done enough to decarbonize California and reduce fossil fuel energy use. This, despite his recent signing of Senate Bill 100, which declared California only use clean, renewable energy by the year 2045.

The summit was organized to raise awareness of the need to reduce fossil fuel and coal-fired energy from our economy and continue the worldwide plan to reduce global greenhouse gasses agreed upon during the Paris accord in 2015.

Reducing carbon, fossil fuel energy and greenhouse gasses is a big deal because scientist, global leaders, and the World Health Organization declare climate change as a public health crisis.

Scientists contend we are living in the hottest days ever. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, the average temperature across the world’s land and ocean surfaces was 58.69 Fahrenheit, or 1.69 degrees above the 20th-century average of 57 degrees and the continued rise of heat on the planet is causing extreme weather patterns, unusual fire episodes, and poor air quality.

Because of the rising heat on earth, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) released an exhaustive report detailing adverse health effects on impoverished communities from around the world and people of color at the top of the list of poor health outcomes due to climate change.

There’s an old saying in the Black community, “When white folks catch a cold, Black folks get pneumonia.”

There are few studies analyzing the effects of climate change focusing specifically on the African American community, however, Norris McDonald, president of the African American Environmentalist Association (AAEA) has logged exhaustive reports concluding, “Two things are certain: African American advancement and health are inextricably tied to economic development and a clean envi-

ronment.”

The historic gathering in San Francisco did not provide any specific plenaries or focus on African Americans; however, there was significant detail on impoverished communities around the world, which included people of all melanin type.

Dr. Aparna Bole, Co-Chair of Health Care Without Harm (HCWH) in Cleveland Ohio showed images of coal-fired plants in the Midwest. She made a case to be more cognizant of protecting people of color and people living in poor communities. “Air pollution from fossil fuel combustion affects the health of my patients every day,” she warned, “Particulate air pollution from coal fire power plants can cause exasperated chronic lung conditions like asthma, contribute to morbidity from cardiovascular disease, contribute to premature birth and low birth weight and neurological disorders. One out of five of my patients has asthma. That’s twice the prevalence of pediatric asthma nationwide and reflects the fact that African American and Latino children suffer disproportionally in Cleveland and communities around this country.”

Dr. Bole went on to tell a story about a young boy who was overweight and suffering from asthma felt good enough to go outside but she felt obligated to let him know he should check the air quality and may need to reconsider going out to play due to his poor health condition.

While Blacks were mostly absent from most of the plenaries and with very few African American delegates, McDonald and the AAEA provide insight into the concerns of the Black community in relation to the entire global effort.

McDonald writes, “Empirical evidence demonstrates that humankind’s emissions lead directly to smog, acid rain, dirty water and negative human health consequences in America’s urban, suburban and rural areas. A measured response to our atmospheric climate management is prudent.”

Kaiser Permanente, Salesforce, Hyundai Motor Company, and other primary business interests lined up to tell their story about using renewables as their source of energy.

Summit protestors remain skeptical of California’s pledge to eliminate fossil fuel use as they disrupted traffic and blocked one of the entrances at the Moscone Center and criticized Governor Brown’s effort. They point to the

unintended consequence of the states cap and trade program, proclaiming “it’s a license to pollute” and a series of new oil drilling permits his administration recently approved.

For his part Brown defiantly said, “We have a plan to phase out oil, to bring in total clean technology. If they have a better one, let me know.”

CSUB Food Pantry Celebrates One-Year Anniversary Surpassing Service Goals!

September 18, 2018 — California State University, Bakersfield is celebrating the one-year anniversary of the CSUB Food Pantry by currently serving an average of 195 students on a weekly basis, surpassing the original goal of serving 100 students per week.

“The CSUB Food Pantry fulfills a basic need for our students by providing food and other items,” said CSUB Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Thomas Wallace. “I am overjoyed at how the CSUB campus and the Bakersfield community responded to our request to help the students. It exemplifies the caring spirit we all have come to expect and love about Bakersfield.”

“We are so fortunate to live in this community,” said Associated Students Inc. Executive Director Ilaria Pesco.

“Since the beginning, the residents of Bakersfield and the faculty and staff on campus have donated generously. We have received over 15,000 in-kind donations of food.”

The CSUB Food Pantry opened on September 18, 2017, through a collaborative effort on behalf of the President’s Office, Academic Affairs, Business Administrative Services, Student Affairs, and University Advancement. To date, the Food Pantry has served 1,395 individual students a total of 5,623 times. It has also provided more than 500

hours of student involvement including two paid graduate student leaders, two student internships and over 30 student volunteers.

Earlier this year, the CSUB Food Pantry received $155,00 in SB 85 Hunger Free Campus funds which will be used to help increase the Basic Needs program on campus.

In March 2018, CSUB Food Pantry partnered with the Haggin Oaks Farmers Market, the Apple Core Project, and Kaiser Permanente to be the recipient of the surplus fruits and vegetables after the Farmer’s Market closes. Since then, between 50-80 students are served fresh fruits and vegetables every week through the Pop-Up Produce Pantry.

CSUB also partners with Community Action Partners of Kern (CAPK) to provide monthly USDA Food Distribution for students. This food distribution averages 100 students per month and has logged more than 3,000 volunteer hours.

CSUB Food Pantry is currently open 27 hours per week and is located between The Runner modular building and the Student Union. and is available to campus students, faculty, and staff.
