3 Black US Governors?

By Lauren Victoria Burke NNPA Newswire Columnist Wildly outspent by a billionaire challenger and the daughter of a former Florida Governor, Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, 39, shocked the political establishment to win the gubernatorial primary in Florida on August 28.

Gillum defeated former Congresswoman Gwen Graham 34-31 percent to win the Democratic contamination. He will now face pro-Trump Congressman Ron DeSantis in the general election on November 6. Gillum’s victory caught many political observers by surprise. The 39-year old Mayor was polling in fourth place less than a month ago. But recent polls showed an upward movement to second place. Gillum and his supporters completed that upward movement by coming in first on election night.

Gillum’s victory sets up a historic opportunity for there to be three sitting African American Governors in the U.S. for the first time in history. Former Georgia lawmaker Stacey Abrams is the Democratic nominee or Governor of Georgia after a decisive July 24 primary victory. Abrams would be the first African American woman to be a Governor from any state should she win. Former NAACP President Ben Jealous is running for Governor in Maryland against moderate incumbent Republican Larry Hogan. There are also four Black candidates for Lt. Governor running this year for the first time in history.

Gillum’s progressive victory was cemented in part by a

late visit by Sen. Bernie Sanders in support of his candidacy. Though he did not win, the Independent Vermont U.S. Senator who ran for President in 2016, focused on bread and butter issues many Americans identified with as he ran against Hillary Clinton. Sanders’ issue focus included income inequality, money in politics, corporate greed and raising the minimum wage. Despite the Democratic Party’s support of the moderate blue dog style of former U.S. Representative Gwen Graham, voters had other ideas and a progressive shift has likely b e e n spurred b y Don-

ald Trump’s policies.

Gillum, a graduate of Florida A&M University, is viewed as the continuation of a progressive surge and a shift away from the establishment also seen in the victory shocking victory of Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez over longtime Conrgressman Joe Crowley in a primary for his New York House seat. Though her victory is not necessarily a symptom of a widespread trend, it is a signal that a political wave in the opposite direction of Donald Trump is on the horizon in less than 70 days on November 6, 2018.

1st Black Woman to Cover White House

Brown NNPA Newswire Contributor On Friday, Sept. 21, a new sculpture of Alice Allison Dunnigan, the first African American woman to receive press credentials to cover the White House and Congress, is scheduled to go on display at the Newseum in Washington, D.C. At the unveiling of the sculpture, featured guests are expected to tell the story of this pioneering journalist who rose to the top of her profession despite racist policies that segregated Black journalists and sexist attitudes that severely limited opportunities for women in the industry.

“Alice Dunnigan endured poverty, segregation and sexism and she fought to fulfill her dream of becoming a journalist,” designer Lauren Bohn wrote on Twitter.

“Alice’s story should give hope to anyone who has ever doubted his or her ability to make it through tough times or, much more painfully, his or her own worth,” said political analyst Jordyn Holman.

Denver, Colo., Mayor Michael B. Hancock said the tribute is long overdue.

“Alice Dunnigan was a barrier breaker for women and people of color to reach higher heights in journalism,” Hancock said.

Dunnigan, who began her journalism career in Kentucky before moving to Washington, D.C., was a pioneering journalist who rose to the top of her profession despite racist policies that segregated black journalists and sexist attitudes that severely limited opportunities for women in a male-dominated workplace.

The life-sized bronze sculpture was created by Kentucky sculptor Amanda Matthews and is being cast at the Prometheus Foundry in Lexington, Ky., Newseum officials said in a press release.

During World War II, Dunnigan moved to Washington, D. C. to work at the War Labor Board. After the war ended, Dunnigan went to work for the Associated Negro Press and became the head of that organization’s Washington Bureau on Jan. 1, 1947, a job she held for 14 years supplying stories to 112 African American newspapers across the United States.

Dunnigan was the first African American woman accredited to report on the White House, covering presidential press conferences.

She also became the first African American woman to gain press credentials to report on Congress, the State Department and the Supreme Court. She also made history Continued on page A2

10 Wounded in Exchange of Gunfire

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) – Police in Southern California say 10 people were shot and wounded after a group playing a game at an apartment complex exchanged gunfire.

San Bernardino police Capt. Rich Lawhead said early Monday three of the wounded are in critical condition after the shootout Sunday night.

Lawhead tells the San Bernardino Sun says the shooting started when someone showed up and opened fire on a group of people playing a game, possibly dice.

He says some of those at the game fired back.

Lawhead says people used handguns and rifles but that no firearms had been recovered and that no arrests had been made early Monday.

He says there is gang activity in the area, but that it is early in the investigation to attribute the shooting to a gang rivalry.

Patient Killed after Jumping Out of Ambulance

DUBLIN, Calif. (AP) – Authorities in Northern California say a patient jumped out of a moving ambulance on a highway and was struck and killed by a passing car.

The California Highway Patrol tells KTVU-TV the unidentified woman was being transported Monday from a medical center in Pleasanton to a psychiatric hospital in San Leandro.

The CHP says the woman got out of her restraints, overpowered a paramedic and jumped out as the ambulance was coming to a stop on a ramp connecting two highways. She was declared dead at the scene.

CHP Officer Josh Roberts says investigators are trying to figure out how the woman was able to jump out.

Drag Queen Story Hour Protests

NEW ORLEANS (AP) – “Drag Queen Story Hour” may be coming to a town near you. Since 2015, men in full drag have appeared at venues across the nation where they read children’s books to small children and their parents.

Larger cities where the story hours have taken place include Chicago, New York, and New Orleans.

In some smaller communities, they have prompted protests.

In Lafayette, Louisiana, the president of the local public library board resigned amid debate over plans to hold “Drag Queen Story Hour” and the mayor has indicated he may seek to cancel the Oct. 6 program.

A handful of protesters showed up outside an August event at a library branch in Columbus, Georgia.

Protests are planned at a Mobile, Alabama, library where a reading session is set for Sept. 8.

Busting Notorious Serial Killer, ‘Bad’ Henry Louis Wallace

By Kimberlee Buck Los Angeles Sentinel / NNPA Newswire During the 1990’s, Charlotte, North Carolina was hit with gang violence, racial tension, and to make matters worse, a crack epidemic. Unfortunately, the residents of Charlotte had no idea their entire city would be turned upside down due to killings of one of the country’s most notorious Black serial killers, “Bad” Henry Louis Wallace.

In late July, former detective Garry McFadden (star of Investigative Discovery’s “I Am Homicide”), the only African American on the squad at the time, revealed the story of “Bad Henry” on a two-hour special on Investigation Discovery (ID). Recently, McFadden spoke with the LA Sentinel to discuss more in-depth how he and his team brought justice to the city and apprehended a monstrous killer.

Over a period of two years, Bad Henry raped and strangled to death young Black women and is suspected in 90 murders across the country. This case was unique for many reasons; the first being that Bad Henry knew his victims. He preyed on co-workers, friends, and friends of his then girlfriend. The second thing that made this case so interesting was the fact that Bad Henry would attend the funerals of the victims’ families and give his condolences.

“We believe Henry Wallace is the first known African American serial killer and we believe that he is the only serial killer that knew all of his victims,” said McFadden.

During the course of his investigation, McFadden was faced with many obstacles. At one point the department was in the process of meeting about the case when Bad Henry struck again taking the life of another innocent woman.

“Our department handled 322 murders, so you take 322 murders and you drop nine of the murders in that cycle of 22 and you only have six to eight homicide detectives. Within that three year period, we have about 1500, [non death related incidents] that families wanted us to investigate. In the middle of that we also had three officers to be shot and killed and we strangely enough had a very high clearance rate that was well above national average. All of that compiled into the nine murders that happened and everybody said, ‘why didn’t you see the connection’ and we said, ‘we were extremely overworked.’”

Wife’s Body Left to Rot GREENWOOD, S.C. (AP) _ The husband of a South Carolina woman whose body authorities said was left inside a funeral home to rot for almost three years said he can't stop thinking about how poorly she was treated in death.

A grand jury indicted two men _ Lawrence Robert Meadows and Roderick Mitchell Cummings _ with desecration of human remains after prosecutors said they left Mary Alice Pitts Moore in unrefrigerated rooms under blankets and surrounded by air fresheners for nearly three years at First Family Funeral Home's locations first in Greenwood and later in Spartanburg.

Arrest warrants against the men said Fred Parker Jr. and his family owed them money for Moore's funeral, so they didn't cremate her remains and return them as requested.

But Parker told The Index-Journal of Greenwood that he talked to the people at First Family Funeral Home once after his wife's March 2015 death and never heard from them again after her body was prepared for a viewing for a Celebration of Life service.

“I never did get to see them no more, from day one to day two. All he did was take $1,100. My daughter said she

gave him $300 and I didn't know anything about this until this came up. He never did try to contact me or anything, no nothing,” Parker told the newspaper.

Meadows and Cummings, who are each 40, face from one to 10 years if convicted. Parks has also sued them in civil court, along with First Family Funeral Home and two other employees. The funeral home has lost its license, according to state records.

Meadows lost his personal funeral license in April 2015 in an unrelated fraud case and Cummins has never had a South Carolina funeral license, according to state records.

“We’re living one day at the time. I'll be glad when this is over,” Parks said. “I will be glad when it's all behind us.

We've been struggling ever since. Emotionally, I just ain't right in the head anymore.”

Parks said he is still dealing with the funeral home treating his late wife in a way that most people wouldn't treat a dog.

“I'm still toting her picture in my wallet. I had to stop looking at it. She was a good woman. That's all I can say,” he said. “Man, if I could get her back, oh Lord. That's my heart. That's my heart.”

Aside from the homicide department being understaffed and juggling many other investigations, the most daunting obstacle by far was trying to solve the case during a crack epidemic. This resulted in the police department receiving a high volume of missing person reports.

“Everybody was missing because they got on crack and they didn’t go to work and then they were later found in hotels. Preachers, pastors, police, doctors, lawyers…everybody was on crack,” said McFadden.

After the arrest of Bad Henry, the department caught a lot of heat from the community and the victims’ families. This combined with McFadden being the only African American on the squad at the time was anything but easy.

He recalls feeling attacked and being blamed for the murders.

“The communities of color, even though they want African American officers to help them, we are caught in the middle. We are caught between a community that looks like us, the community that we serve and the communities that don’t look like us,” said McFadden.

“In the middle of this, I tried to educate my community on what really happened but they ate me alive. Many years later, some of them [the residents] saw my point but we still have that problem in our community and that was something that I wanted to address during the time of Bad

by being the first African American woman on a presidential tour when she went on the whistle-stop tour with President Truman, according to the Newseum.

Throughout Dunnigan’s career, she battled the rampant racism and sexism that dominated the mostly white and male professions of journalism and politics. She once famously stated, “Race and sex were twin strikes against me. I’m not sure which was the hardest to break down.”

In 2015, the Newseum hosted a program about Dunnigan, “Inside Media: Alice Dunnigan, Pioneer of the National Black Press.”

The program featured Carol McCabe Booker, who edited and annotated a new edition of Dunnigan’s autobiography, “Alone Atop the Hill.”

The sculpture will be on display at the Newseum through Dec. 16, 2018. It will then be taken to Dunnigan’s hometown of Russellville, Ky., and installed on the grounds of the West Kentucky African American Heritage Center as part of a park dedicated to the civil rights movement.

“At a time of growing racial divide courtesy of the Trump administration, this is a very welcomed development,” said journalist James Kosur.

“Alice Allison Dunnigan deserves this honor – she was a true pioneer in journalism for women and the African American community,” Kosur said.

After the murders of Brandi Henderson and Betty Baucom, investigators were able to link Bad Henry as a suspect once they found his palm print on the rear of Baucom’s car.

Nonetheless, McFadden believes that Bad Henry was the most monumental case of his career. During his time as a detective and working on numerous investigations, McFadden never saw such a ruthless psychopathic killer.

Stop Police Murders of Black Youth

By Stacy M. Brown NNPA Newswire Contributor Civil Rights leaders and others reacted with a sense of relief – if only temporary – after a Texas jury sentenced a former police officer to 15 years in prison Wednesday for the shooting death of an unarmed African-American teen in a Dallas suburb.

“The child murdering cop just got 15 years in prison … he’ll likely serve all 15,” said activist Shaun King. “It doesn’t bring Jordan [Edwards] back, but it’s the closest thing to justice we’ve seen.”

A day earlier when the same jury found former Police Officer Roy Oliver guilty, King said it was an “answer to our prayers.”

“A bittersweet moment for his family and for all of us who’ve fought non-stop for justice,” King wrote on Twitter.

“We’d rather Jordan be alive, but this was so important.”

Journalist Jamil Smith noted a connection from Jordan to Emmett Till.

“I look at his face and see Emmett Till, lynched 63 years ago today. This story didn’t end in the typical fashion, though,” Smith said. “Oliver was convicted. I hate that this news is so surprising.”

The jury deliberated for 12 hours before deciding the fate of Oliver, the former Balch Springs, Texas officer. In addition to the prison term, it imposed a fine of $10,000.

Oliver was convicted of murder for the killing of Jordan Edwards, a 15-year-old high school freshman.

He fired into a car full of teens on April 29 last year, saying he believed it was moving aggressively toward his

partner.

Dallas County District Attorney Faith Johnson described Oliver as a “killer in blue” who violated his oath to protect citizens.

Prosecutors sought a sentence of at least 60 years while the defense argued for 20 years or less.

“The fact that Roy Oliver was even indicted for murder was already a small victory, but to be found guilty and convicted by a jury? These things don’t happen,” said Finessa Hudgens of Dallas. “So, although 15 years may not seem like much, this could be the start of something great,” Hudgens said.

Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr., the president and CEO of the National Newspaper Publishers Association, wrote in an email that the Oliver’s sentence “finally breaks the systematic problem of denying equal justice to the families and victims of racially-motivated police murders of Black persons across the United States.”

White police officers must be held accountable, said Chavis, a long-time civil rights activist and one-time head of the NAACP. “The prison sentence should have been at minimum a life sentence for this brutal murder of an innocent Black teenager,” he said.

“But today, at least police officers in America are put on notice: if you murder us, you will be punished and imprisoned. We must stop these racist police murders.”

Recycling Lives Economic Development Project will utilize a variety of funding sources, which includes $220,000 in HUD CDBG funds, to develop and make improvements for facility operations and provide job training resources for program participants.

The applicant has secured funding resources in the amount of $1,402,620 which will allow program implementation and related training and staffing costs. On behalf of Recycling Lives, a non-profit organization, KAB a non-profit arm of the Employers’ Training Resource (ETR) would both develop and operate the facility which plans to implement a recycling operation of non-California Redemption Value glass into decorative glass materials which may be used in landscaping and/or related applications.

The operation will create new job opportunities and provide essential job training related skills and other resources to participants of the program. Planned assistance for start-up costs include: rent, utilities, and staffing costs including wages, supportive services and workforce training. Project related equipment includes: a pulverizer, trammel, surge hopper, conveyors, control panel, motors and gear boxes. Other planned activities include: installation of a glass recycling machine, purchase and installation of a belt fed gross weigh bagger, related equipment, portable evaporative cooler, skid steer loader, two (2) delivery trucks and related City permits and fees.

FINDING OF NO SIGNIFICANT IMPACT The County of Kern has determined that the project will have no significant impact on the human environment. Therefore, an Environmental Impact Statement under the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA) is not required. application for Southern California University of Health Sciences, in Whittier Ca., where Dr. Bradley had graduated. Corinthian and his dad were invited to visit the campus. The trip was bitter sweet as cancer treatment had not been decided; yet our son knew he had to obtain his goals and pushed forward. Now look at God ya’ll, at that very same campus visit, not only was Corinthian accepted into the chiropractic program, he received a small scholarship for an essay he had written during the entrance exam! Now all we had to do was find and furnish a nearby, safe and inexpensive apartment, decide on treatment for my husband’s cancer, and pray for an extra speedy recovery so that he could start a new part time job waiting for him to pay sons expenses. I remember wondering, “Lord, how are you going to work all this out, because your timing has got to be impeccable.” Then I had to remind myself, it’s not my job to worry and try to figure it out, but to trust and believe that no matter what it looked like, The Lord would work it out!

As Corinthian immersed himself in the program, he realized the Lord placed him exactly where he needed to be. He always loved helping people, working with his hands and has a true servant’s heart. He met and made some wonderful friends, some of whom I’m sure will be lifelong friends. He has gone on mission trips with his classmates treating those less fortunate in other countries. During Corinthian’s first trimester in school, he met a very special young lady named Erica Smith who was a trimester ahead of him and also pursuing her dream to become a chiropractor. The two became friends in the program, then study buddies. The last two years of the program they began a dating relationship.

Funny side note: Corinthian actually met Erica’s brother Jason first before ever meeting her. Jason took a picture of him and Corinthian and sent it to Erica’s phone saying “You should date this guy”; in which she responded she was not interested because she did not like dreadlocks.

Erica is bright, ambitious, thoughtful and loving. On July 15 2018, while Corinthian and Erica were in attendance at Greater Harvest Christian Center (Bakersfield) for church, Corinthian approached the pulpit to give his testimony during which time he called for Erica to join him. During his testimony he spoke of how he met Erica at school and how she stayed by his side helping him and loving him in a way he never knew existed. At that moment he got down on one knee in the pulpit, raised a box and humbly asked Miss.

Erica Smith to be his wife! With emotions running high, the congregation broke out with shouts, and applause, with some of the young ladies chanting ‘SAY YES, SAY YES, SAY YES!’ Without hesitation, tears streaming down her cheeks, Erica said “YES!” and the two became engaged on July 15th, 2018, in the pulpit of Greater Harvest Christian Center!

There is always a blessing in the storm, you only have to find it. The day I was rear ended in 2003 started the chain of events that would lead my son to his profession as a chiropractor and to his future wife, Dr. Erica Louise Smith. Our faith has only been made stronger by the adversities we have overcome, and we wouldn’t have it any other way, for we know that God is always working behind the scene, and it’s all for His glory!

Dr. Corinthian Tyson and Dr. Erica Smith plan to marry in April 2019. Dr. Tyson is employed with Spinal Health Center in Rancho Cucamonga, Ca. while Dr. Smith is employed with The Berlin Wellness Group in Los Angeles, Ca. The Tyson family would like to thank everyone who helped our son obtain his goal either by prayer, word or deed. To Cain A.M.E Church (Bakersfield), where Corinthian began his Spiritual walk as a child, we thank you. To grandma ‘Imo’, who loved and adored her only grandson, and will always be with him in Spirit. To Pastor Vernon Kemp, First Lady Kemp and all the members of Greater Harvest, your love and encouragement was like no other. Mrs. Cora Jordan, (Grandmother), who always knew when to call Corinthian to lend a listening ear, and to love and encourage him when times were tough; we appreciate you dearly. Ricky Wright (God-father), we thank you for wisdom and guidance and loving “Mr. Greedy” from the moment he was born. Attorney Erika Randall who opened her doors when Corinthian needed a place to stay. Aggie, we thank you for the college care packages you shipped cross country! And a very special thanks you to Dr. Brendon Bradley, who saw something special in Corinthian, and took him under his wing.

To our daughter Kelly Tyson who resides in Virginia, thank you for being there for your baby brother. For friends and family member’s names I didn’t call, you are loved and appreciated for the role you played in helping Corinthian obtain his goals. To my Spirit filled, hardworking husband Harol Tyson, God could not have given me a better partner, you truly are my portion! To the man who rear-ended me, I owe you a thank you! Acclaimed ‘Funk Brother’ Eddie Willis Dead at 82

Eddie “Chank” Willis, a member of the famed Motown session group known as “The Funk Brothers,” died at his home in Gore Springs, Mississippi.

The 82-year-old was part of a team of musicians who helped create some of the most memorable hits in music history.

“His guitar playing was heard worldwide on countless Motown Records classics, including the Marvelettes’ ‘Please Mr. Postman,’ and Stevie Wonder’s ‘I Was Made to Love Her,’ and ‘My Cherie Amour,’” the Recording Academy said in a statement.

With the Funk Brothers, Willis earned two Grammys at the 45th ceremony in 2003 – Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance for ‘What’s Going On’ with Chaka Khan and Best Compilation Soundtrack Album For A Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media for “Standing in the Shadows of Motown.”

In 2004, the Funk Brothers’ incredible accomplishments were recognized with the Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Willis played electric guitar and occasional electric sitar for the Funk Brothers during the 1960s and early 1970s.

According to the GoFundMe page, he’s known for his signature style of muted guitar riffs which added a dis-

tinctive tone or “color” to the beat, often timed with the snare, of the hundreds of hit songs recorded at Hitsville U.S.A. for Motown artists.

Among other recordings Willis performed on are “The Way You Do the Things You Do” by The Temptations and “You Keep Me Hanging On” by The Supremes.

Influences for Willis include Chet Atkins, Wes Montgomery, and Albert King. He played a Gibson Firebird guitar on most his early 1960s work, later moving on to use a Gibson ES-335. On recordings such as The Supremes’ “No Matter What Sign You Are,” Willis performed on a Coral sitar.

In his 2003 memoir Motown: The View from The Bottom, Willis’ fellow Funk Brother Jack Ashford wrote: “Joe Messina, Eddie Willis and Robert White always held down the guitar section. If all three were not on a session, two would definitely be there.

“How could three guitarists not get in each other’s way and still be effective? The producer would have the arrangements prepared but the three would organize their parts and play them so flawlessly it would be like they were smoothly fused together.” Willis will be remembered as a highly regarded session player who helped craft the signature Motown Sound. Specifically, Jackson’s “Thriller” album has been displaced by the Eagles’ greatest hit compilation, as the biggest selling record of all-time.

“One of the things everyone seems to be overlooking is that the Eagles’ album is a compilation of hits from 1971 to 1975 whereas ‘Thriller’ is one studio album with nine instant classics,” said Motown biographer and music aficionado Herb Livingston.

“It’s like saying, they put four or five albums together, got their sales numbers and compared it to one album and its sales. It’s not a fair comparison and that alone makes ‘Thriller’ still number one,” Livingston said.

The Recording Industry Association of America told The Associated Press that the Eagles’ album – “Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975” – is now certified 38x platinum, which means sales and streams of the album have reached 38 million copies.

The album was released in 1976 and, by those standards, pushes Jackson’s “Thriller,” which is 33x platinum, to second place.

The last time RIAA tallied sales for the Eagles’ greatest hits album was in 2006, when it said it was 29x platinum.

Sales and streams for “Thriller” were last updated last year, which could very well mean that it could leapfrog into the top spot again.

RIAA’s platinum status was once equivalent to selling one million albums or songs, but in 2013 the company began incorporating streaming from YouTube, Spotify and other digital music services to determine certification for

albums and songs.

Now, 1,500 streams of an album is equivalent to an album sale. Also, 10 song downloads equals 1 album sale.

That also means Jackson’s “Thriller” should remain on solid footing even if its just recognized as the biggest selling studio album of all-time.

The RIAA compilation also only considers sales in the United States.

With smash hits like “Billie Jean,” “Beat It,” and “Wanna Be Startin’ Something,” “Thriller” has sold more than 100 million copies worldwide and no single artist has come close to achieving such a feat. Jackson’s moniker as the King of Pop probably is earned in that many music lovers don’t even consider “Thriller” to be his best work.

His 1979, “Off the Wall,” is widely considered musical genius while his 1987 “Bad” sold more than 24 million copies.

Jackson, who died in 2009 at the age of 50, won 24 American Music Awards, 13 Grammy Awards and was twice inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame – in 1997 as a member of the Jackson 5, and in 2001, as a solo artist.

“His fans – and there aren’t more loyal and dedicated fans in the world – will make sure to go on a downloading and buying frenzy,” Livingston said. “The ‘Thriller’ album will easily reclaim those tainted sales numbers and again shut up those who doubt.”

Aretha’s Lack of a Will Could Make Things Rocky for Heirs

By ANDREW DALTON AP Entertainment Writer LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Aretha Franklin was so hardnosed in her business dealings that she demanded to be paid in cash before performing. Her heirs won't have it so simple.

Though she lived to 76 and was terminally ill with pancreatic cancer, the Queen of Soul died without a will.

As her four sons and other family members move on from Friday's funeral in Detroit, they're left with the potentially tall task of finding out how many millions she was worth, and divvying it up, a process that could take years and is likely to play out in public.

Estate law experts expressed surprise but not shock that a wealthy person like Franklin would put off making a will until it was too late. At least one of the singer's attorneys says he urged her repeatedly over the years to draft one.

“I tried to convince her that she should do not just a will but a trust while she was still alive,” says Don Wilson, a Los Angeles lawyer who worked on entertainment matters for Franklin for nearly 30 years. “She never told me, `No, I don't want to do one.' She understood the need. It just didn't seem to be something she got around to.”

Laura Zwicker, an attorney who specializes in estate planning but is not affiliated with the Franklin estate, says she sees it happen all too often in her work.

“People don't like to face their own mortality,” Zwicker says. “I had a client who had a $70 million real estate portfolio who had had end-stage diabetes. He had plenty of conversations with me about estate planning but would not sign the documents.”

Papers filed in Michigan's Oakland County court last week by David J. Bennett, the lawyer who worked most closely with Franklin, lay out the few known basics: She was not married and left four sons, ages 48 to 63: Clarence Franklin, Edward Franklin, Kecalf Franklin and Ted White Jr. Clarence, Aretha's eldest, is incapacitated and is represented by a guardian. And a niece of hers has accepted the role of executor.

Under Michigan law, as in most states, the sons will equally divide their mother's assets in the absence of a will, and so far no signs of conflict have emerged among family members. Bennett did not respond to phone and email messages seeking comment.

Aretha Franklin's friend Ron Moten, a Michigan businessman, gave the four sons some guidance in his speech at Friday's funeral.

“Remember your family, and friends that have been with you for years,” Moten told the men. “Because you are about to meet a lot of people who will now want to be your new best friend. You will also meet some people that will have the best investments in the world for you. My advice?

Go slow, be careful and be smart.”

The documents make no mention of the value of Franklin's estate. The figure almost certainly runs into the tens of millions, but there will probably be widely varying estimates as her attorneys seek to downplay her wealth for tax purposes and the IRS tries to maximize the amount for its own reasons.

Franklin maintained ownership of the songs she wrote and did well by them, Wilson says, though of her major hits, “Think” is the only one that's her own composition.

She also wrote some lesser hits, such as “Rock Steady.”

Though her records were played millions of times, she earned little in radio royalties from smashes like 1967's “Respect” because such payments go overwhelmingly to the song's author, not the performer. In the case of “Respect,” the royalties go to the estate of Otis Redding, even though the song owes nearly all its popularity to Franklin.

“I would imagine she probably felt she was entitled to

more, but probably received more than a lot of artists from the time, especially African-American artists,” Wilson says.

Among Franklin's more tangible assets are several pieces of property in the Detroit area that according to tax assessors' estimates are worth at least $2 million, with a market value that could easily be twice that.

Once the value is established _ a process that could take years _ the IRS will take any back taxes Franklin owed, then will tax her estate at 40 percent for any assets beyond $11.2 million.

Kenneth Abdo, an attorney who specializes in probate law and has worked on the estate of Prince, who also died without a will, says the IRS will conduct an audit of her holdings.

Wilson, her entertainment attorney, says she would not have wanted to see her finances publicly aired: “She was a private person.”

As for why some clients don't make out a will, Zwicker said some heirs, like Franklin's son Clarence, may need more than others, and that can be a difficult and touchy decision for a parent.

“One arrangement may be fitting for one child, where other people need more help,” Zwicker said. “To accept that and put it on paper can be hard for a parent.”

And, in many areas of the state, it’s partly true. However, a devastating summer for the state has ignited concerns about the state’s emergency response preparedness.

According to Time Magazine, at one point this summer, the state dealt with 14 active wildfires. Because of the catastrophic fires, there is a renewed focus by utility companies, such as Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E), to ensure all Californians are planning, responding and recovering after emergency events.

“Families need to be prepared, have a plan and know what to do during an emergency,” says Kevin Smith, an emergency management specialist with PG&E. “In California, these disasters can happen anywhere, anytime.”

to install and replace batteries in smoke alarms and locate and know how to use fire extinguishers.

“Wildfires in California are just one of the many challenges we face”, said CAL FIRE Deputy Chief Scott McLean. National Preparedness Month focuses on working to ensure our communities are prepared for disasters and emergencies of all kinds. “We all must prepare ourselves, our businesses and our families now, to ensure we are ready for any disaster. Disasters don’t plan ahead, but you can!

Take the time to create an emergency plan, put together a disaster preparedness kit, and sign up for alerts.”

In the aftermath, the fire left behind smoke and water damage from the automatic sprinkler system. She added that residents should be aware it’s not only the fire that leaves lasting damage to a home or business.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) _ The founder of a thriving Twin Cities startup company is providing guidance to other black tech entrepreneurs in overcoming a dysfunctional home life on the path to success.

Clarence Bethea founded Upsie, a technology company that sells warranties that undercut retailers’ prices.

Founded in 2016, Upsie now has more than 14,000 users, Minnesota Public Radio reported .

Bethea grew up in a dysfunctional home. His father abused his mother, and he had to overcome homelessness and drug dealing.

“It was a lot of work, but I met the right people at the right time who changed the trajectory of my life,’’ said Bethea, 37. “I received guidance and support from

them along the way.’’

He went to Bemidji State University in 2002 on a basketball scholarship but dropped out of college to pursue entrepreneurship.

Bethea said his acceptance into Techstars Retail, an international startup accelerator, played an important role in his success. The accelerator offerings funding and mentorship for a three-month period. Upsie was one of 10 startups selected in 2017.

“It took away the black or white thing,’’ he said.

“It made people judge me on who I am, how I am as a founder, what our team is doing every day and the business.’’

“Self perception, faith, hope, and access and opportunity provided by society, are four key elements which enables one to rise above frustrations and disappointments, she said. For even in the midst of closed doors or rejections, we rise through it. Through our faith, we are trusting the unseen and knowing without evidence.”

Criterion for the nine scholarship recipients was based on GPA, extracurricular, or community involvement. Each of the nine chosen students have maintained outstanding GPAs, ranging from 3.5- 4.5, while taking challenging Advanced Placement and Honors Classes.

The recipients are: Terrance De’Louth, outstanding senior at East Bakersfield High School, serves as Vice President of EB’s BSU, is an active member of Project BEST (Black Excellence in Scholarship and Teaching) and a member of EBH Varsity Swim, Basketball, and Football Teams. His future plans include attending CSU and major in Accounting.

Malcolm Francisco, senior at South High School, scored in the 99th percentile for US high school students on the SAT, active member of project of BEST, and has remained on the honor roll throughout his entire school career. He is enrolled in SHS prestigious Math Science Engineering Academy. Malcolm plans to attend UCLA and earn a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering.

Bryce Jackson, senior at Stockdale High School, is a scholar athlete of the Varsity Basketball Team, represents the community by being a part of a large-scale community service project. He is currently working on a Human Trafficking Awareness Video that will be seen in all Kern County Health classes, he’s an active leader in the BSU, and is Associate Student Body Commissioner of Athletics. Bryce plans to attend UCLA or UCSB and major in Engineering or Economics.

Bakersfield Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. hosted its annual Love Luncheon Scholarship Program, Saturday, February 17, 2018 from 11:00a.m. -2:00 p.m. at the Stockdale Country Club.

Tickets sold for $50.00 per person with proceeds benefitting the chapters’ scholarship fund. Dr. Coley has over 26 years of academic and administrative experience. She is the sixth President of California State Polytechnic University, Pomona-and the first woman to serve in that role.

Black Entrepreneur Finds Success with Minnesota Tech Firm ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) _ The founder of a thriving Twin Cities startup company is providing guidance to other black tech entrepreneurs in overcoming a dysfunctional home life on the path to success.

Clarence Bethea founded Upsie, a technology company that sells warranties that undercut retailers’ prices.

Founded in 2016, Upsie now has more than 14,000 users, Minnesota Public Radio reported .

Bethea grew up in a dysfunctional home. His father abused his mother, and he had to overcome homelessness and drug dealing.

“It was a lot of work, but I met the right people at the right time who changed the trajectory of my life,’’ said Bethea, 37. “I received guidance and support from

them along the way.’’

He went to Bemidji State University in 2002 on a basketball scholarship but dropped out of college to pursue entrepreneurship.

Bethea said his acceptance into Techstars Retail, an international startup accelerator, played an important role in his success. The accelerator offerings funding and mentorship for a three-month period. Upsie was one of 10 startups selected in 2017.

“It took away the black or white thing,’’ he said.

“It made people judge me on who I am, how I am as a founder, what our team is doing every day and the business.’’
