VALRICO, Fla. (AP) – A Florida couple is suing their real estate agent, alleging she never told them she’d been keeping abandoned cats at the house they bought.

Daniel McKay and Katherine Pulker said they pulled out the air fresheners and turned on the air conditioner shortly after buying the house and immediately noticed the overpowering stench of cat urine. The couple purchased the home hoping to move in before they got married in May. They still haven’t moved in.

The Tampa Bay Times reports they’re suing realtor Deborah Clark and Link Realty for negligence, breach of contract and failure to disclose hidden defects that left the house “uninhabitable.’’

According to the lawsuit, Clark used the home to keep 25 cats under a nonprofit that she runs. They claim Clark tried to cover up the smells by installing new carpet and painting over urine stained drywall and insulation.

Medics told her Mother “She could just bring her daughter herself to the hospital since they couldn’t afford the ambulance.”

South Carolina Tampa, FL — Crystle Galloway, a 30-year old mother who was a possible stroke victim, died after four paramedics refused to give her proper treatment. The victim’s mother believes the paramedics didn’t help them intentionally because they assumed that Crystle could not pay for the ambulance ride. The four paramedics have since been suspended for “gross neglect of duty.”

Crystle, a mother of three, had shown symptoms of stroke just five days after giving birth to her baby. She later died, but the family believes that she could have been saved if only she was given the necessary treatments.

They were placed on paid administrative leave on Friday in connection with the incident, Hillsborough County Administrator Mike Merrill said.

Nicole Benhamou, Galloway’s mother, said she called 911

and informed the responding medics that she might be suffering from a stroke. When they arrived, she also told them that she just had a C-section. But they didn’t examine her and only told them they couldn’t afford the ambulance.

“They never asked us if we had insurance, which we do,” Benhamou told WPBF-TV News.

Benhamou said the medics eventually told her that she could just bring Galloway herself to the hospital since they couldn’t afford the ambulance. She did drove Galloway to Brandon Regional Hospital but her condition was getting worse that she had to be flown to Tampa General Hospital, where she went into a coma and eventually died.

The medics dispute that claim and said that it was Benhamou who insisted on bringing Galloway to the hospital by herself.

But there was no informed consent form signed to prove their statement. Instead, they allegedly falsified the records and indicated that the patient could not be found.

The four paramedics, who each worked with the department for as much as nine years, will undergo disciplinary hearing on July 31 for their gross neglect of duty that could be the possible reason for Galloway’s death.

Meanwhile, Benhamou started a GoFundMe to help her with the expenses for her grandchildren, including a 5-day-old baby, who were left behind by their mother. So far, they have exceeded the goal and raised about $9,000.

Church Pays Off Mortgage $500K Anonymous Donor BLUFFTON, S.C. (AP) – An African-American church in South Carolina has said good-bye to its mortgage, thanks to a $500,000 gift from an anonymous donor.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports the Campbell Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church burned its mortgage in a ceremony Saturday. The Bluffton church was able to pay the mortgage because of the donation, which was made in May. Church members cheered as AME leaders used a lighter to burn the mortgage document. The church cost $1.4 million to build and was dedicated in 2004.

The church plans now to refurbish its historic chapel, which was built in 1853 and sold to freed slaves in 1870s.

State Sen. Clementa Pinckney once was church’s senior pastor. He was killed in 2015 along with eight parishioners at Emmanuel AME Church in Charleston.

Congress Must Stop Family Separation Pass the Keeping Families Together Act

Like many Americans, the treatment of children and families at the border has shaken me to my core.

San Diego-based U.S. District Court Judge Dana Sabraw has essentially said to stop defying the courts and reunite these families.

The deadline to reunify parents with children under 5 was July 10th, and the deadline to reunify children five and older is July 26th. The Administration has asked for an extension saying it would need more time to reconnect parents and children in certain cases. They have requested an extension to the deadline, but the court is still monitoring and it has yet to be granted.

It’s no secret that Donald Trump views immigrants with disdain. He has called Mexicans “rapists” and referred to immigrants as “animals.”

The Trump Administration has embraced nativist dog whistles from day one.

Nowhere is this clearer than in the shameful “zero tolerance” policy pursued by President Trump, which has separated families, locked kids in facilities, and traumatized innocent chil-

dren.

Families come to this country seeking asylum. They undertake grueling, dangerous journeys in the hope that America will provide safe harbor from the violence that they are fleeing. Some are escaping domestic abuse, others have come to our shores to save their families from gangs. None expect to have their children ripped from their arms when they finally reach safety.

Two weeks ago, I travelled to McAllen, Brownsville and Los Fresnos, Texas to visit detention centers and see the situation firsthand. I witnessed terrified kids sleeping on cold concrete floors.

I saw scared toddlers separated from their families. I heard from mothers unsure if or when they would see their children again.

Some parents didn’t even have a phone number to reach their children.

This is not the first time in America’s history that we have separated young children of color from their parents. It happened during the Middle Passage.

It chills me to the bone to know our government would repeat this dark history of jailing children and splitting up families.

Before the abolition of slavery, children of Black slaves were sold by owners at will. This was a constant fear for enslaved families—that their beloved children would be sold away, never to be seen again.

Five years later, this size six, 36-year-old woman would suffer the first of three heart attacks just five days after giving birth to her third child. It was May of 2004. She was misdiagnosed for an entire week despite an EKG showing an acute myocardial infarction. She sought treatment six of seven days before someone finally listened.

On that sixth night, she laid on her bed with one foot on the ground for the entire night, afraid to relinquish her physical attachment to earth, because she felt her body shutting down. She prayed. And she vowed that if she lived, she would raise her voice so that no other woman suffered her fate.

After this week-long heart attack, she returned to the emergency room. She was rushed by ambulance to another hospital and taken to emergency bypass surgery. She had five coronary artery dissections, and she underwent an emergency quadruple bypass. Her heart was so remarkable that the surgeon literally held it in his hand and had someone capture a photograph.

Eight months later, that same young mother learned that her bypass grafts had shut down. Her rejection fraction was only 21 percent. She was advised to call a family meeting, get her affairs in order. Her prognosis was grim.

It was then that I became intimately acquainted with her.

I marveled at her strength and resolve as we walked this journey together. She became a force of nature, moving heaven and earth in her fight for life. She underwent a repeat bypass, had part of her heart cut off, 15 laser holes drilled in her heart, a pericardial window cut in the sac around her heart, three defibrillator implants, stents, angioplasty, and then some.

She’s flatlined four times, and suffered from congestive heart failure. She’s experienced more heart issues than generations of a family. But I am happy to share with you that she is still with us. This is my story, and WomenHeart has been a lifeline for me.

I became a WomenHeart Champion in 2007 and it changed my life. The sense of sisterhood and friendship are truly priceless.

WomenHeart is the nation’s only patient-centered organization solely dedicated to advancing women’s heart health through education, advocacy and patient support. At its core are WomenHeart Champions—women living with heart disease—who are trained to be community educators, support network leaders and advocates for women’s heart health in the communities in which they live.

WomenHeart is a friend to many WomenHeart Champions like me. Today, I speak to audiences of women living with heart disease and medical professionals. I’m a little scarred and battle tested, I am no longer 36, I am no longer a size six, but I am still here. And I am determined more than ever now, to keep the vow that I made 14 years ago in May of 2004, so that not another woman suffers my fate. I, along with WomenHeart, am fighting for every heart with the same tenacity and vigor that saved my own.

As an African American woman, I know that this disease impacts women differently than men, especially minority women.

Heart disease claims the lives of nearly 48,000 African American and 21,000 Hispanic women annually. Which is why I am asking other women of color who are heart disease survivors to join the fight and become a WomenHeart Champion at the 2018 WomenHeart Science & Leadership Symposium. It’s the nation’s only free volunteer program that trains women with heart disease to be community educators and support network coordinators in their communities. to send their children to government or church-run boarding schools, known as “Indian Schools.” There, these children were stripped of their culture, forced to cut their hair and given new names. These schools existed in America until the 1970s.

America also has a long history of jailing entire families, like the Trump Administration now wants to do with asylum seekers.

Who can forget the devastating internment camps of the 1940s, where people of Japanese ancestry were forced to live during World War II. This policy was such a source of national shame that in 1988, the U.S. government signed legislation formally apologizing and providing restitution to interned Japanese-Americans.

Instead of learning from our painful history, the Trump Administration is repeating the mistakes of our past and inflicting more trauma on families seeking safe harbor from the violence and abuse they left behind.

And now, rather than proposing real solutions, the Trump Administration wants to lock immigrant families up indefinitely.

Let me be clear: jailing children is unacceptable under any circumstances.

Ending the policy of separating families—but forcing kids to live in jail for months on end—is just replacing one form of child abuse with another.

These human rights violations must be addressed immediately.

I have asked UN Secretary-General Anthony Guterres to send observers to report on the conditions at detention facilities and to ensure the thousands of children who have been separated from their parents are reunited.

I’m also asking for the resignation of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Sessions established the inhumane zero-tolerance policy—knowing the trauma and distress it would cause families seeking asylum—and Secretary Nielsen implemented it and lied to the American people. The stunning immorality on display from both of these officials should preclude them from ever serving in public office again.

I am proud of Judge Sabraw’s decision to bar the separation of migrant children from their parents, ordering them to be reunited within 30 days.

Now, we need Congress to pass the Keeping Families Together Act to stop this from happening again and to mandate U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents’ complete child welfare training on an annual basis.

Above all, Congress must get serious about fixing our broken immigration system. Our immigrant brothers and sisters— and most of all, children—must be treated with dignity, compassion, and respect.

6Yr Old Author’s Debut Book Sells Over 10,000 Copies

Fredericksburg, VA — Kennedy O’Neal has a lot to be proud of these days. After her recent appearance on Good Morning America, sales of the Faith Baptist School kindergartener’s debut book, The Adventures of Super Kennedy: Saving and Investing, have surpassed more than 10,000 copies. Kennedy and her dad, Chris O’Neal, released the book in mid-March to a positive reception – both locally and nationally.

“It truly is a blessing on the outcome of the release of the book and how it is inspiring others to invest in their children’s future,” her father stated. “The feedback has also been amazing.

The book has been featured in libraries and schools. In fact, a teacher from our local private high school is using it as a teaching tool for their students. We really anticipated the book to be more geared to children, but adults are picking up the book and reading it, too.”

The book, which is geared toward 5 to 14-year olds, is

inspired by Kennedy’s real-life passion for earning and saving money as well as investing it. Her fascination with shiny coins and “the green” started while in diapers. In her debut book, the 6-year old morphs into “Super Kennedy” to teach kids creative ways to save and earn money on their own. Once she has enough money saved up, with her parents help, she buys an undesirable house to fix up and collect rent. According to Kennedy’s father, the book has motivated young readers to think more seriously about their own financial future.

“Children have been inspired to start their own businesses.

For example, parents have told us that their kids have started a lemonade stand, selling jewelry and cutting grass in order to save for toys and houses!” stated Chris. “A parent told us that after reading the book to their kids they are doing chores around the house and saving and stashing their money.”

Since the book’s release, Kennedy was recently featured as a guest of Steve Harvey and Taylor Thomas’ Tots to Teens Expo in Prince George’s County in Maryland in May. Kennedy and her family have also made it their mission to take part in local literacy events to discuss the importance of saving and investing money at a young age. Presently, she’s touring local schools and talking to students about the importance of saving. She is currently looking for additional schools to add to the tour.

“The goal of the book is to impress upon kids that they can save and invest, too. They do not have to be an adult to start investing. Start now!” stressed Chris.

As for what’s next for the 6-year-old? Her father says she is hoping to turn the book into a cartoon and even release a second book focused on financial freedom. According to her father, her ultimate dream is to eventually appear on The Steve Harvey Show and Ellen.

“Her dream is to talk about her book on her two favorite shows. It’s her hope to inspire other kids,” her father stated.

(AP) _ Judges in California and South Carolina have ordered cellphone carriers to disable nearly 200 contraband cellphones used by inmates to orchestrate crimes behind and outside prison walls, the most sweeping order of its kind ever won by corrections officials.

It’s an important victory for prison officials who have been frustrated by their inability to stop the flow of smuggled phones that are used to coordinate drug deals, gang operations and killings. Even murderous cult leader Charles Manson, who died in November, obtained phones and used them to communicate with followers outside prison.

The warrant essentially orders carriers to “turn these phones into bricks,” California Corrections Secretary Scott Kernan told The Associated Press on Monday. The phones will be shut down over the next week or two, he said.

Kernan expects other states will follow the lead of South Carolina and California and ask judges to approve broad shutdowns. He said the ruling is a big step forward in addressing the intractable and related issue of drugs and cellphones in prisons.

Last February, federal prosecutors said two inmates used smuggled cellphones to run a violent, drug-dealing street gang from inside California’s super-maximum-security Pelican Bay State Prison. And South Carolina officials blamed a prison riot that killed seven inmates in April on a turf war between gangs over territory, money and contraband items such as drugs and cellphones.

The wireless industry has long been able to remotely disable cellphone if they are lost or stolen. But the industry has said it needs a court order before it can shut down the devices at the request of the government.

The goal is to not only stop inmates from using the phones to orchestrate crimes, but to disrupt the lucrative smuggling of cellphones by prison employees and others that Kernan said can bring the smuggler “about $1,500 a pop on the (prison) black market.” California authorities seized more than 13,000 cellphones last year alone, the most since 2011, “so you can do the math. That’s a lot of black market.”

Getting an order to shut down multiple cellphones is more efficient and cheaper that tracking them down and confiscating them one at a time.

In California, a Kern County judge on Friday ordered all the major carriers to shut down 97 devices including cellphones and SIM cards at Kern Valley State Prison in Delano, north of Bakersfield. A South Carolina judge issued a similar warrant for about 100 cellphones at one prison there, also on Friday, California officials said.

California plans to obtain similar warrants to regularly shut down phones in other prisons, Kernan said.

Corrections department Special Agent James Rochester

cited the “voluminous offenses committed by the use of cellular phones” and “the direct link these phones have to the commission of crimes” as reasons for the judge granting the warrant. He said hundreds of inmates have told him they can easily obtain the phones that he said in his sworn affidavit have been used to coordinate violent crimes including assaults and murders along with narcotics and firearms trafficking.

It has long been illegal for inmates to have cellphones in prison. Prison officials identified the contraband phones using cellphone signal-capturing devices that were installed years ago at 18 of the California’s 35 prisons. They halted expansion of that

program in 2015 for fear the technology was being outpaced by advances in cellphones’ sophistication.

South Carolina officials used similar technology to identify the illicit cellphones there, Kernan said.

California has since installed nearly 1,000 sophisticated metal detectors, scanners and secret security cameras in prisons to detect and deter the smuggling of cellphones and other contraband like drugs. That effort was paid for by Virginia-based Global Tel-Link, the nation’s largest prison phone company, from the projected $17 million it receives each year from California inmates and their families who use landlines to make phone calls that are monitored for security reasons.

PUBLIC NOTICE CITY OF RIDGECREST STATE OF CALIFORNIA NOTICE INVITING SEALED BIDS

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the City of Ridgecrest invites and will receive sealed bids at the office of the City Clerk of the City of Ridgecrest, Owner of the work, located at 100 West California Avenue, Ridgecrest, California 93555, until the hour of 4:00 p.m. on August 21, 2018.

A pre-bid meeting is scheduled for 10:00 AM on August 2, 2018 at 100 W. California Avenue, RIDGECREST, California. This meeting is to inform bidders of project requirements and subcontractors of subcontracting and material supply opportunities. Bidders’ attendance at this meeting is mandatory.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK: The work involves the tenant improvements for the proposed rehabilitation of an existing 5,720 SF Senior Center building. The protposed improvements include new flooring; replacement of restroom fixtures, partitions, and accessories with ADA compliant features; replacement of kitchen cabinets; rehabilitation of minor plumbing issues; replacement of an existing water heater; replacement of tee-bar tile panels; replacement of gypsum board ceiling in restrooms and kitchen; and miscellaneous repairs. All proposed improvements are funded through Community Development Block Grant (CDBG).

SITE OF WORK: The site of the work is located at 125 South Warner Street, Ridgecrest, CA 93555.

COMPLETION OF WORK: All work must be completed within twenty-five (25) working days after the commencement date stated in the Notice to Proceed.

LIQUIDATED DAMAGES: Liquidated damages of five hundred dollars ($500.00) per working day, as specified in the Special Conditions, shall be paid by the contractor to the City of Ridgecrest for each working day in excess of the time limit stated above that the project is not complete.

OPENING OF BIDS: The bids will be publicly opened and announced at 4:00 p.m. on August 21, 2018 the above mentioned office of the City Clerk.

OBTAINING CONTRACT DOCUMENTS: The contract documents are entitled “Ridgecrest Senior Center CDBG-Funded Tenant Improvement”. All contract documents, plans, and specifications must be obtained from the City’s Consultant, Willdan Engineering, 374 Poli Street, Suite 101, Ventura, CA 93001, (805) 653-6597. BID SECURITY: Each bid shall be accompanied by a certified or cashier’s check or bid bond in the amount of ten percent (10%) of the total bid price payable to the City of Ridgecrest as a guarantee that the bidder, if its bid is accepted, will promptly execute the contract.

BIDS TO REMAIN OPEN: The bidder shall guarantee the total bid price for a period of sixty (60) calendar days from the date of bid opening.

PREVAILING WAGE REQUIREMENTS: Pursuant to California Labor Code Sections 1770, 1773, 1773.1, 1773.6, and 1773.7, as amended, the applicable prevailing wages for this project have been determined. It shall be mandatory upon the contractor to whom the contract is awarded and upon any subcontractor under him to pay not less than the higher of the Federal and the State prevailing wage rates to all workers employed by them in the execution of the contract. The applicable Federal prevailing wage rates are those that are in effect ten (10) calendar days prior to bid opening; they are set forth on the U.S. Department of Labor website: http://www.wdol.gov/wdol/scafiles/davisbacon/ ca33.dvb but are not printed in the Specifications. Lower State wage rates for work classifications not specifically listed in the Federal wage decision are not acceptable. The applicable State prevailing wage rates are set forth on the California Department of Industrial Relations website: http://www.dir. ca.gov/DLSR/PWD but are not printed in the Specifications; these rates are subject to predetermined increases.

Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) Requirements SB 854: Contractors and all subcontractors must be registered with the DIR. Effective January 1, 2015, in order to be awarded and to perform work on public works projects, prime contractors and subcontractors must possess and maintain registration with the Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) at https://efiling.dir.ca.gov/PWCR. This is a separate requirement from the Contractors State License Board (CSLB) licensing requirement.

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) provides a toll-free hotline service to report bid rigging, bidder collusion, or other fraudulent activities. The hotline is available Mondays through Fridays between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. eastern time, at (800) 424-9071. The hotline is part of the DOT’s continuing effort to identify and investigate highway construction contract fraud and abuse and is operated under the direction of the DOT Inspector General. All information will be treated confidentially, and caller anonymity will be respected.

Conflict of Interest: in the procurement of supplies, equipment, construction, and services by subrecipients, the conflict of interest provisions in 24 CFR 85.36, OMB Circular A-110, and 24 CFR 570.611 shall apply. No employee, officer, or agent of the sub-recipient shall participate in the selection, award, or administration of a contract supported by federal funds if a conflict of interest, real or apparent, would be involved.

Small Business Requirements: The City of Ridgecrest hereby notifies all bidders that it will affirmatively insure that in any contract entered into pursuant to this advertisement, small businesses will be afforded full opportunity to submit bids in response to this invitation and will not be discriminated against on the grounds of race, color, or national origin in consideration for an award. The bidder to whom the contract is awarded will be required to comply with the Small Business Affirmative Action Plan requirements as set forth in the special provisions.

Section 3 Requirements: The work to be done on this project is subject to the provisions of Section 3 of the Housing and Urban Development Act of 1968 (12 USC 1701u) which requires that employment and other economic opportunities generated by certain HUD financial assistance shall, to the greatest extent feasible, and consistent with existing Federal, State and local laws and regulations, be directed to low- and very low-income persons, particularly those who are recipients of government assistance for housing, and to business concerns which provide economic opportunities to low- and very lowincome persons. These requirements are explained in detail on 24 CFR 135. The pre-bid conference will include a workshop on Section 3 compliance.

RETAINAGE FROM PAYMENT: The contractor may elect to receive one hundred percent (100%) of payment due under the contract from time to time, without retention of any portion of the payment by the City of Ridgecrest, by depositing securities of equivalent value with the City in accordance with the provisions of Section 4590 of the Government Code. Such securities, if deposited by the contractor, shall be valued by the owner, whose decisions on valuation of the securities shall be final. Securities eligible for investment under this provision shall be limited to those listed in Section 16430 of the Government Code or Certificates of Deposit from Banks or Savings & Loan. In order to substitute securities the contractor shall enter into an agreement with the City of Ridgecrest entitled “Agreement Concerning Investment of Funds” as attached to the contract.

ADDRESS AND MARKING OF BID: The envelope enclosing the bid shall be sealed and addressed to the City Clerk, City of Ridgecrest, and delivered or mailed to Ridgecrest City Hall, 100 West California Avenue, Ridgecrest, California 93555. The envelope shall be plainly marked in the upper left-hand corner with the name and address of the bidder and shall bear the words “Bid for Ridgecrest Senior Center CDBG-Funded Tenant Improvement Project” bid opening at 4:00 p.m. on August 21, 2018. Hip-Hop Pioneer MC Lyte Partners with the NNPA to Give Back

By Tyvan Burns, Diamond Durant, Denver Lark #TeamOptimistic, NNPA DTU Journalism Fellowship Hip-hop pioneer MC Lyte is the national spokesperson for the National Newspaper Publishers Association’s (NNPA) Discover The Unexpected (DTU) Journalism Fellowship program.

Her passion about education and her desire to create opportunities for HBCU students are two of the many reasons she partnered with the NNPA and Chevrolet, the program’s sponsor.

As she continues her great acts of philanthropy, MC Lyte said that music and journalism are much alike, as they are both used to tell stories.

MC Lyte became great friends with Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr., the president and CEO of the NNPA, through his work in hip-hop and civil rights.

When she got the call about the NNPA’s DTU program, she said that she was happy to help out; she said that representing the DTU program is a great fit.

When it comes to her philanthropic work that grew out of her music career, MC Lyte said that she always wanted to give back. That sense of altruism manifested early on in her music career with her hit single “I Cram to Understand U,” which included a strong anti-drug message, geared towards the Black community.

MC Lyte made it her responsibility to advocate for young people and to shed light on the deluge of heroin and crack cocaine that flooded her Brooklyn neighborhood in the 70’s and 80’s.

“I don’t think that I really do anything for me, per se,” MC Lyte said. “It’s about getting out there, [using] the MC Lyte name, to form partnerships with bigger entities and to gain access to resources and sharing those resources with the people who need them the most.”

Hip-hop pioneers like Salt-N-Pepa and Rakim inspired MC Lyte to partake in the music industry at such an early age.

MC Lyte also vividly remembered how the Bronx-born, hip-hop

group Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five helped to shape her storytelling rap style.

MC Lyte said that “The Message,” the Furious Five classic featuring Melly Mel, painted a picture of life in the Bronx that was very different from her life in Brooklyn, where she was born and raised. “The Message” influenced MC Lyte to gravitate towards the storytelling aspect of hip-hop. MC Lyte described “Lyte as a Rock,” her first album, as “a book of poems and short stories.”

“It was easy to get into a [creative] space and just write,” MC Lyte said. “My mother made me write an essay for whatever I wanted to do.”

MC Lyte said that young artists, who are pursuing careers in the entertainment business, should educate themselves about royalties, build a trustworthy team and seek legal advice when necessary.

“Never sign anything without counsel and always sign your own checks,” MC Lyte advised.

Reminiscing about her career in the music industry, if given the opportunity to change or do anything different, MC Lyte said that she would have said “yes” more often and been more open to trying new music genres and collaborating with unexpected artists.”

Fashion Spotlight Again Shines for ‘80s Star Dapper Dan

By DEEPTI HAJELA Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) _ In hip-hop’s golden era, the artists responsible for rap’s distinctive sound went to Harlem fashion designer Dapper Dan for the period’s equally distinctive look.

Now the fashion groundbreaker, who spent more than two decades out of the public eye, is back.

He’s got a partnership with Gucci and the likes of Beyonce among those wearing his designs, like the logoed jacket that is part of her costumes in her current tour with her husband, Jay-Z. It’s a situation that Dapper Dan calls “amazing” and that observers say is a reflection of how hip-hop and street style have influenced global fashion, with him among the innovators.

The couturier, whose real name is Daniel Day, now has a new Gucci-sponsored workshop in a Harlem brownstone, not far from the now-closed 125th Street boutique that once clothed Salt-N-Pepa, Eric B. & Rakim and LL Cool J. His operation now is a different one from the 24-hour-perday shop that turned out custom-made jackets for those early rap superstars, but Dapper Dan said some things haven’t changed.

As a young man with a reputation for sharp dressing, “my first intention was to transform myself through clothes,” he said.

“I took that same concept in opening up a store, transforming people. When Gucci came along, I saw the opportunity to do this element of transformation on a larger scale.”

Dapper Dan’s outfits in the 1980s were original designs embossed with designer logos from Gucci, Fendi and Louis Vuitton among others _ without the brands’ permission.

He saw the pull of luxury and brand names and came up with the idea of putting the logos people coveted from bags and luggage on clothes to be worn.

“None of the big brands were making coats and jackets.

That wasn’t available,” Dapper Dan said. That “left the whole field open for me.”

His logo-draped fabrics also were used in everything from suits to car interiors, in styles and silhouettes that the labels themselves weren’t even doing.

“This is kind of the story of hip-hop,” said Erik Neilsen, an

associate professor at the University of Richmond, in Richmond, Virginia, who teaches African-American pop culture. “Dapper Dan took something that was there. He arguably made it better. ... He showed the brands all these possibilities it’s clear they had never really considered.”

Dapper Dan insists what he was doing wasn’t a knock-off.

He wasn’t like the people who were making counterfeit bags and belts. His creations were “knock-ups,” he said.

“I was creating things that when somebody wore it, they knew, `Oh, no, Gucci doesn’t even make pants and jackets and overcoats and things,”’ at least not the way he was doing it.

By the late 1980s, when his clients also included Mike Tyson, who got into a fight with another fighter at Dapper Dan’s store, the brands had started to bring their power to bear against him. There were legal orders and raids, including one by Fendi, whose lawyer for anti-counterfeiting efforts was Sonia Sotomayor, now on the U.S. Supreme Court.

After his store closed in 1992 because of the legal pressures, he said, he went “underground,” with private clients including Floyd Mayweather.

The Gucci partnership came about after Gucci’s creative director, Alessandro Michele, put on the runway in May 2017 a jacket that was strikingly reminiscent of one Dapper Dan created in the 1980s using another brand’s logo.

The move prompted social media furor from those who demanded credit go to Dapper Dan and critiqued the fashion house for celebrating a look its original designer had been chastised for creating.

Gucci said the jacket was an homage.

But then it went a step further and reached out to Dapper Dan to see whether he would work with the brand officially.

The Gucci-Dapper Dan collection launched in mid-July, available in Gucci stores and online. It’s inspired by Dapper Dan’s work from the 1980s and includes track suits and jackets that echo pieces he made then with price points going as high as several thousand dollars.

Received by Newsfinder from AP LOS ANGELES (AP) _ In Roseanne Barr's first TV interview since her ABC sitcom was canceled for a racist tweet, the comedian apologized for her “ill-worded” post and insisted she isn't a bigot.

During her hour-long interview on Sean Hannity's Fox News Channel show Thursday, Barr lamented the damage done to her by her tweet about Valerie Jarrett, a former adviser to President Barack Obama.

“It cost me everything,” Barr said. “I wish I worded it better.”

Hannity repeatedly urged Barr to apologize to Jarrett on air.

The comedian eventually did, saying that she was sorry for the poorly worded tweet. She said she would tell Jarrett, “I'm sorry that you feel harm and hurt, I never meant that. I never meant to hurt anybody.”

She repeated her assertion that she did not know Jarrett was black when she likened Jarrett to a cross between the Muslim Brotherhood and a “Planet of the Apes” actor.

Barr repeatedly said Thursday that her tweet was meant to address U.S.-Middle Eastern policy and had no racial overtones.

She said she was stunned by the negative reaction to the tweet, which Hannity noted was nearly universal.

“I am a creative genius, and this is not a good feeling for an artist to be treated this way, and it's not a good feeling for a citizen, either.”

It was the second time Barr addressed the controversy Thursday. The comedian also sat down for an interview with her longtime friend, Rabbi Shmuley Boteach, at a New York City comedy club and stressed that the tweet was political and not racist. She called it “very awkwardly constructed.”

“I'm sorry that anyone thought that was a racist and not a political tweet because it was, in fact, a political tweet and not a racist tweet whatsoever,” she told Boteach. “And, you know, I can talk about it till I'm blue in the face and they're not going to accept that, but I accept that.”

Despite apologizing at times, Barr also said on the Fox interview that she felt like she had apologized enough for her actions.

“I feel like I have apologized and explained and asked for forgiveness and made recompense,” she said early in the interview.

At another point, just before addressing Jarrett directly, Barr said, “I already have said I'm sorry for two months.”

Barr, a supporter of President Donald Trump, brought him briefly into the conversation.

“I'm not a racist and the people who voted for Trump, they're not racist either, and Trump isn't a racist, sorry. We just have a different opinion,” she said.

She said she could have fought ABC over her firing, but that she walked away from the hit reboot because she didn't want anybody to lose their jobs. She said her contract was supposed to allow her to correct any misstatements she made within 24 hours, but she wasn't given the opportunity.

The new version of “Roseanne” was an instant smash for ABC, owned by the Walt Disney Co., and was counted on to lead the network's fortunes next season.

Its debut episode last March was seen by more than 25 million people with delayed viewing counted in, numbers that are increasingly rare in network television.

ABC has announced that it will produce a “Roseanne” spinoff called “The Conners” that features John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf and Sara Gilbert.

2020 Census Citizenship Question Civil rights leaders joined census policy experts July 17 in an urgent plea, particularly to communities of color, for a show of public activism and force to derail a fast-moving Trump administration effort to officially ignore them. The fight begins by taking full advantage of a narrow window of opportunity in which to speak out against it.

That window closes on Aug. 7, the deadline for public comment on the administration’s last-minute plan to, as part of the 2020 census, ask every single person in the United States if they’re legal citizens. The plan is being sold as an effort to ensure voting accuracy, but is widely seen as obvious discrimination against communities of color and the poor by discouraging their participation in the census.

Census data drives the allocation of political representation, business’ investment and funding decisions for transportation and hundreds of other government and private programs.

By adding the citizenship question to the 2020 census, along with cutting its funding and changing how the counting will be done, the government is on course to ensure that millions of people in the United States will not be counted.

“The 2020 census is one of the most urgent civil rights issues facing the country,” said Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of the Leadership Conference Education Fund. “And right now, every person in America has the opportunity to help ensure the count is fair and accurate for all communities.”

Gupta, along with other representatives of Asian American, Latino, African American communities and census veteran Terri Ann Lowenthal, emphasized the importance of reaching out the Census Bureau either through the website censuscounts.org or by writing, and to do so by 11:59 p.m. on Aug. 7 at the very latest.

“There will be no extensions for submitting public comments,” Lowenthal warned. “Historically, public comments, comments from stakeholders, has been influential,” she said.

Lowenthal is policy advisor to the Leadership Conference Education Fund and former staff director for the House Census and Population Subcommittee.

“We need the American people’s help more than ever,” said Arturo Vargas, of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials. “Census Bureau and NALEO research shows that the citizenship question in the 2020 census will significantly depress response rates. This will lead to an inaccurate and unfair count.”

The Census has been conducted every 10 years since 1790.

It’s mandated in the U.S. Constitution. Typically, changes in its questionnaire and collection method are carefully planned and field-tested for years before they’re implemented.

Not so during the Trump administration and the GOP-led Congress of recent years. Gupta credited the idea of asking people about their citizenship to the hard-line anti-immigrant positions of disgraced Trump advisor Steve Bannon and Kansas Secretary of State and gubernatorial candidate Kris Kobach.

Kobach has made a name for himself purging tens of thousands of mostly non-white voters from registration rolls with his Interstate Voter Registration Crosscheck program -- not to be confused with ICE’s Operation Cross Check arrest sweeps -which targets people whose names can be confused with those of other voters, such as people named Lee, Jackson or Garcia, for instance. In more than 99 percent of those cases, the alleged fraud by the disenfranchised voters was unfounded.

“We have never witnessed a more systematic and thorough taking-down of the census,” said Jeri Green, of the National Urban League, a decades-long partner with the U.S. Census.

“From severe underfunding to de-scaled and terminated critical research to the still-vacant two top leadership positions at the Census Bureau and now the political foisting of an untested, unjust and unconstitutional citizenship question on the backs of already vulnerable, historically undercounted populations ... the trickle down impact of an inaccurate 2020 census would be severe to the black population, whose inner city and rural communities risk losing the most in terms of federal funding, political representation and equal rights under the law.”

“Getting the census right is critical for Asian Americans,” said John C. Yang, president and executive director of Asian Americans Advancing Justice. “Inclusion of this untested question will lead to an inaccurate and unfair count of the American population and would be a derogation of the Constitution.

Yang, who also cited Kobach’s role. “We want to make clear that our community’s concerns will be heard, that our community will not be made invisible.”

“The American public must hold its government accountable,” Vargas said. “History is watching.”

There are currently seven federal lawsuits filed by an array of cities, counties, states, challenging plans for census 2020, particularly over the citizenship question, Yang noted.

But there will be other battles to come. Green also described “prison-based gerrymandering” whereby incarcerated people will be counted as residents of where they’re locked up, rather than of their communities, and the per-capita benefits will therefore accrue to the region of the jail or prison.

There are also plans to rely more than ever on online responses for data collection, and away from mailed questionnaires with follow-up by census staff for non-respondents, thus creating a “digital divide” whereby those for whom computer access is more difficult are more likely to be left out.

One strategy to help overcome that, Green said, is strengthening partnerships with libraries and librarians, “the most trusted institutions in grass-roots neighborhoods.”

But in the short term, the emphasis is on convincing the Census Bureau and its Commerce Department overseer of the importance of dropping plans to query people on their or their co-habitants’ citizenship status.

The census’ own web site claims to welcome comments, but the most recent news article posted there is from early March, before the citizenship question was proposed, and despite touting its presence on Twitter, Facebook, Youtube and “other social media channels” there is no easily accessible channel for discussion of any census processes or decision.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) _ The founder of a thriving Twin Cities startup company is providing guidance to other black tech entrepreneurs in overcoming a dysfunctional home life on the path to success.

Clarence Bethea founded Upsie, a technology company that sells warranties that undercut retailers’ prices.

Founded in 2016, Upsie now has more than 14,000 users, Minnesota Public Radio reported .

Bethea grew up in a dysfunctional home. His father abused his mother, and he had to overcome homelessness and drug dealing.

“It was a lot of work, but I met the right people at the right time who changed the trajectory of my life,’’ said Bethea, 37. “I received guidance and support from

them along the way.’’

He went to Bemidji State University in 2002 on a basketball scholarship but dropped out of college to pursue entrepreneurship.

Bethea said his acceptance into Techstars Retail, an international startup accelerator, played an important role in his success. The accelerator offerings funding and mentorship for a three-month period. Upsie was one of 10 startups selected in 2017.

“It took away the black or white thing,’’ he said.

Criterion for the nine scholarship recipients was based on GPA, extracurricular, or community involvement. Each of the nine chosen students have maintained outstanding GPAs, ranging from 3.5- 4.5, while taking challenging Advanced Placement and Honors Classes.

The recipients are: Terrance De’Louth, outstanding senior at East Bakersfield High School, serves as Vice President of EB’s BSU, is an active member of Project BEST (Black Excellence in Scholarship and Teaching) and a member of EBH Varsity Swim, Basketball, and Football Teams. His future plans include attending CSU and major in Accounting.

Malcolm Francisco, senior at South High School, scored in the 99th percentile for US high school students on the SAT, active member of project of BEST, and has remained on the honor roll throughout his entire school career. He is enrolled in SHS prestigious Math Science Engineering Academy. Malcolm plans to attend UCLA and earn a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering.

Bryce Jackson, senior at Stockdale High School, is a scholar athlete of the Varsity Basketball Team, represents the community by being a part of a large-scale community service project. He is currently working on a Human Trafficking Awareness Video that will be seen in all Kern County Health classes, he’s an active leader in the BSU, and is Associate Student Body Commissioner of Athletics. Bryce plans to attend UCLA or UCSB and major in Engineering or Economics.

With $192 million in ticket sales so far, the film is expected to take in $218 million over the four-day President’s Day weekend and an incredible $361 million worldwide. According to ComScore, global ticket sales were set to reach $387 million over the weekend.

According to Entertainment magazine, “Black Panther” is already the eighth-largest single-day gross for the film industry ever and the third-biggest opening for a superhero movie.

“Black Panther” scored a $75.8 million opening day.

“The Avengers” opened with $80 million and “Avengers: Age of Ultron” opened with $84 million. The film also became the highest-grossing title in history at 33 AMC Theaters across the country, according to a report in the Hollywood Reporter.

The BNSF Railway Company says most of the train cars were empty and the others were carrying wine when they came off the tracks Saturday near Tehachapi east of Bakersfield.

The derailment briefly shut down some lanes on rural State Route 58 but the debris was cleared after several hours.

KBAK-TV says the cause is under investigation.

MOSES LAKE, Wash. (AP) _ Authorities say a Washington woman suffered severe burns after gasoline fumes ignited when gas was being pumped into a garbage can in a car’s backseat.

KOMO-TV reports the Grant County Sheriff’s Office says the woman, who was a passenger early Saturday morning at a Cascade Valley Grocery convenience store, was smoking a cigarette, which ignited the flames.

Deputies later found a large amount of marijuana in the car’s trunk.

A bystander took the woman to Samaritan Healthcare in Moses Lake.

The male driver who was pumping the gas ran away.

July 30, 2018 — California State University, Bakersfield experienced a record-breaking year with its Faculty and Staff Initiative to Support Student Success, raising a total of $776,655. The percentage of faculty and staff who participated by supporting important programs such as Athletics and the CSUB Fund was at an all-time high.

“My habit has long been to give where it is most needed, and to me that has always meant impoverished people living in the developing world. But what about my own home, the very place I work? I decided to start giving here,” said Dr. Stafford Betty, sponsor of the annual Betty Creative Writing Awards. “The trick was to find where it was most needed, and my wife happened to mention there was no monetary support for the English Department’s annual creative writing awards. Heck, I thought, I’m a creative writer myself! So why not? That’s how it happened.”

This year, the featured programs were: • The CSUB Fund, which allows the University to fill gaps between state funds and the actual cost of higher education.

Black Entrepreneur Finds Success with Minnesota Tech Firm ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) _ The founder of a thriving Twin Cities startup company is providing guidance to other black tech entrepreneurs in overcoming a dysfunctional home life on the path to success.

Clarence Bethea founded Upsie, a technology company that sells warranties that undercut retailers’ prices.

Founded in 2016, Upsie now has more than 14,000 users, Minnesota Public Radio reported .

Bethea grew up in a dysfunctional home. His father abused his mother, and he had to overcome homelessness and drug dealing.

“It was a lot of work, but I met the right people at the right time who changed the trajectory of my life,’’ said Bethea, 37. “I received guidance and support from

them along the way.’’

He went to Bemidji State University in 2002 on a basketball scholarship but dropped out of college to pursue entrepreneurship.

Bethea said his acceptance into Techstars Retail, an international startup accelerator, played an important role in his success. The accelerator offerings funding and mentorship for a three-month period. Upsie was one of 10 startups selected in 2017.

“It took away the black or white thing,’’ he said.

“It made people judge me on who I am, how I am as a founder, what our team is doing every day and the business.’’

“I have always felt that giving back to the University, either in monetary donations or volunteer work has been really important to me,” said Robin Flores, assistant to the dean of Social Sciences and Education. “I have worked on campus for 25 years and have valued and appreciated all that this campus has done for my family and me. I was able to take classes, and my daughter received her teaching credential from CSUB this Spring on our fee waiver program.

“People often ask me why I always volunteer, some think I just want to get out of the office, some think I want to move up in work position, but my response is consistent and remains the same year after year, ‘I give back because the University has given me and my family so much. I can’t imagine working anywhere else!’”

The third annual initiative is just one of the many ways the CSU Bakersfield faculty and staff give back to its students and the campus community.
