Millennial Brings Innovation to Education With “LegendsDoLive” NNPA ESSA Educator Spotlight:

Jarren Small, a 28 year-old, Missouri City native and community activist, launched LegendsDoLive, in an effort to improve educational outcomes for disadvantaged youth.

By Lynette Monroe Program Assistant, NNPA ESSA Public Awareness Campaign Jarren Small, a 28 year-old, Missouri City native and community activist, stopped asking, “Why not?” and became the answer that he was looking for when he launched the non-profit organization LegendsDoLive.

In 2014, without any major partners, Small founded LegendsDoLive, an organization committed to funding and coordinating community-based programs for disadvantaged youth.

As a charismatic adolescent, Small was active in various extracurricular activities. He attended Hightower High School, played basketball and earned awards through the Media and Broadcasting Academy. In 2008, Jarren became an Eagle Scout.

He credits his accomplishments to the positive impact of his parents’ consistent engagement and strategic exposure to diverse environments.

Shrugging his shoulders, Small downplayed his impressive list of academic and extracurricular accolades.

“Yeah, I guess I was kind of a cool kid in certain aspects,” Small said.

Ironically, Small’s many accomplishments were nearly overshadowed by his difficulty with standardized testing.

“Everyone thought I had it all together, but I failed to pass the math portion of the state standardized test,” called the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS), Small said. “I passed the Math TAKS by one point—my fourth time. I felt like [God] was giving me one final chance to get it together.”

After high school, Small attended Prairie View A & M University in Prairie View, Texas, an hour’s drive to the northwest of Missouri City.

“I did very well at [Prairie View A & M University],” Small said. “It was one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life.”

And once again, Small was quite the standout student. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in mass communication with a minor in marketing. As an undergraduate, he led a movement to bring the first panther statue to campus in reverence of the university’s founding fathers. Small served as the student government association president from 2011 to 2012.

Small’s collegiate career was a stark contrast to the challenges he had faced just a few years earlier as a graduating senior.

When asked if his difficulty with testing was a defining moment, Small responded: “I feel like my entire life has led to this point, like everything I’ve been through and all the experiences I’ve had have been preparation for what I am doing right now.”

Fortunately, for other future leaders like Jarren Small, the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), national education law signed by President Barack Obama, seeks to alleviate the burden of ineffective testing. ESSA gives states more flexibility to decide what type of assessments they issue. ESSA also allows states to develop “innovative” assessments or to use other nationally recognized tests like the SAT or ACT. Small said that children are the nucleus of communities and that the success of our schools is the key to community sustainability.

Smiling, Small explained that, “Kids are not the future; they are the right now.”

The development of positive resources to support children offers a tangible solution to many concerns facing inner-city communities, Small said.

Small emphasized that his methods and approach to education are resources that all students can benefit from.

Likewise, ESSA requires states to prioritize stakeholder engagement in an attempt to better meet the educational needs of local populations in lieu of the national one-size-fits all academic standards promoted by its predecessor, the No Child Left Behind Act, signed into law by President George W. Bush.

Currently, LegendsDoLive works primarily with high school students. This year, their widely anticipated annual “Senior Fest” included an all-star basketball game between Hightower High School and Ridge Point High School, followed by an empowerment forum and concert.

“This concert is happening during school. Something like this has never been done before,” Small explained, as he expounded on the innovation required to engage today’s youth.”

More than 600 students participated in the event. Small said getting students to participate in positive, educational events is not as difficult, as some people might think.

“It’s easy,” Small explained. “You just have to listen to them and then give them what they ask for.”

Small said that he’s applying this same attitude to his newest education focus: literacy. In May, LegendsDoLive launched a hip-hop curriculum called “Reading With a Rapper” to promote reading and writing proficiency. This program is a response to Small’s educational approach of listening to children first and then responding to their needs.

Let’s hope that Small’s enthusiasm about innovative approaches to education radiates throughout the nation as it has in the Houston-metropolitan area.

Rapper Buys Every Seat in House, Takes Strangers to Movies

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - A Maine rapper surprised moviegoers with free tickets to a sci-fi satire movie in Portland.

Rory Ferreira, who goes by the stage name Milo, bought all 129 seats to the 4:20 p.m. showing of the movie “Sorry to Bother You’’ at the Nickelodeon on Saturday. The Portland Press Herald reports employees told patrons they could see a movie for free as they arrived at the theater.

Ferreira says he was inspired by the movie’s director, Boots Riley, to do something good for society. Ferreira, of Biddeford, also attended the movie himself, and tweeted an invite for anyone interested to “catch a flick wit me.’’

The movie follows the story of a black telemarketer who takes on white speaking mannerisms to try to succeed at his job.

Bus Driver Says Passenger Passed By ‘Because You are Black’ EDGARTOWN, Mass. (AP) - A Massachusetts bus driver has been fired for telling a would-be passenger that he wasn’t picked up because he’s black.

The Martha’s Vineyard Transit Authority says the exchange was caught on video Wednesday afternoon.

Transit officials say the bus was traveling from Edgartown to Oak Bluffs when the driver passed the person. The bus was at capacity, but officials say the driver had failed to switch the marquee indicating it was full.

The man took an Uber to Oak Bluffs where he caught up with the bus and questioned the driver about why he was passed by.

At first, the driver said the bus was full. But when pressed, the driver said, “it’s because you are black.’’

The transit authority says it has “zero-tolerance’’ for that type of behavior.

Home Detention for Maxine Waters Threats

LOS ANGELES (AP) _ A Los Angeles man who threatened to kill Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters in a profanity-laced voicemail has been sentenced to six months of home detention.

Anthony Scott Lloyd also was sentenced Monday to three years’ probation and 100 hours of community service.

The 45-year-old Lloyd pleaded guilty in April to threatening a U.S. official.

Last October, Lloyd left a voicemail at Waters’ office telling her that if she continued threatening President Donald Trump, “we’ll kill you,’’ and “You’re dead.’’ Lloyd also used a racial slur against Waters, who’s black.

Lloyd told the FBI he was upset with Waters for comments criticizing Trump on a talk-radio show.

Waters said in a letter that a lenient sentence for Lloyd would only embolden others to engage in similar conduct and may endanger the community.

“Brett Kavanaugh is here for a reason. He believes presidents should be exempt from criminal prosecution and investigation while in office,” Steyer said, noting Kavanaugh’s previous comments about the presidency and his opposition to prosecuting a sitting president.

Kavanaugh has suggested that Congress pass a law barring sitting presidents from criminal prosecution and investigation, personal civil suits, and questioning from criminal attorneys.

He has claimed that presidents can disregard laws they consider unconstitutional, despite what courts say.

Kavanaugh, a Georgetown educated jurist, who also teaches at Harvard Law School, declared the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau unconstitutional; he also wrote that Washington D.C.’s ban on semi-automatic rifles was unconstitutional.

“He’s anti-choice—just last year, he argued in favor of prohibiting an undocumented pregnant immigrant in federal custody from getting an abortion. He considers the Affordable Care Act unconstitutional,” Steyer said.

Kavanaugh has also attempted to roll back President Obama’s greenhouse gas regulations.

Ben Betz, the Digital Advocacy Director for the left-leaning Northwest, D.C. group “People for the American Way,” said Kavanaugh is “not just your run-of-the-mill narrow-minded, elitist judge.”

While Justice Kennedy, whom Kavanaugh would replace, was the high court’s last “swing vote” on critical issues like women’s reproductive rights and LGBTQ equality, it’s impossible to overstate how much is at stake with this nomination, Betz said in an email.

“We know that if Kavanaugh is confirmed that it won’t be long until a woman’s right to choose and the Affordable Care Act are gone,” Betz said.

Lawmakers also voiced their concerns.

“Whether or not the Supreme Court enforces the spirit

of the words, ‘Equal Justice Under Law,’ is determined by the individuals who sit on that court,” said Democratic California Sen. Kamala Harris. “Brett Kavanaugh represents a fundamental threat to that promise of equality. I will oppose his nomination.”

Democratic New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand also opposed the nomination.

“One things already clear from his record, [Kavanaugh] can’t be trusted to safeguard rights for women, workers or to end the flow of corporate money to campaigns,” Gillibrand said.

After the announcement, Kavanaugh said that his judicial philosophy is straightforward.

“A judge must be independent and must interpret the law, not make the law,” Kavanaugh said. “A judge must interpret statutes as written. And a judge must interpret the Constitution as written, informed by history and tradition and precedent.”

In a statement about the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh, the NAACP said that the next Supreme Court justice will play an outsized role in determining whether African Americans move forward in our journey toward achieving full equality, whether we simply tread water for the next three decades, or whether we slide backward toward our former status as second-class citizens.

“Brett Kavanaugh is a dangerous ideologue whose extreme views on civil rights would solidify a far-right majority on the Supreme Court. Coming after Neil Gorsuch’s appointment, a Kavanaugh confirmation would re-make the Court in President Trump’s own image,” the NAACP statement said. “This prospect is unacceptable to the American people, and the NAACP is ready to lead the fight of a generation.”

The NAACP statement continued: “We will fight this Trump nomination with everything we’ve got. Our state conferences, branches and units are fully engaged to tell their Senators that our civil rights hang in the balance and that Kavanaugh must be defeated.”

Brown NNPA Newswire Contributor If President Donald Trump’s last Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch is any indication, his latest pick in Brett Kavanaugh will do the civil rights community no favors, National Urban League President Marc Morial said following the announcement of the president’s high court nominee.

Morial wasn’t alone, as many others joined in to call on the Senate to reject Kavanaugh, 53, who currently serves as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

Some of Kavanaugh’s more controversial opinions are at the core of arguments for those who oppose his appointment.

While he hasn’t expressed outright opposition to the Supreme Court’s decision in Roe v. Wade, critics note that Kavanaugh may likely side with Trump, when he eventually votes on the issue of abortion.

In one opinion, Kavanaugh did write that the government

has “permissible interests in favoring fetal life, protecting the best interests of a minor, and refraining from facilitating abortion.”

In other issues that appear more germane to minority groups and communities of color, Kavanaugh has issued controversial rulings on religious liberty and the Second Amendment.

The U.S. Supreme Court is the final stop for justice in America. The Supreme Court’s rulings affect all citizens, because every state must follow its decisions.

“Judge Kavanaugh has a record of ruling against affordable healthcare and women’s reproductive rights. Particularly troubling is his record on cases involving racial and workforce discrimination,” Morial said. “Seating a Supreme Court nominee with an obvious disdain for fundamental liberties will change American life as we know it.”

Tom Steyer, who runs the California-based group, “Need to Impeach,” has urged all his constituents to contact their senators to stop the nomination.

The goal of the helpline is to ensure each person who uses Lilly insulin is matched with the best cost solution available. The phone number will be made available on August 1.

Free clinics Lilly is donating insulin to three relief agencies – Americares, Direct Relief, and Dispensary of Hope – to eventually supply nearly 150 free clinics across the U.S. with Lilly insulin.

How is Black-Owned Business Doing in the Trump Economy

By Marisol Beas California Black Media Leo Hickman, the founder of Classy Hippie Tea Company, has been in business for seven years. Hickman said under the current economy “there is monetary value, even if you are losing” because Trump “just put in tax breaks for owners,” the American Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, that can be written off.

The American Tax Cuts and Jobs Act passed in December and will have some benefits to small business owners. The National Federation of Independent Business says small business owners will be able to file as “pass through entities,” which allows owners to file and pay as an individual.

In addition, the NFIB says business owners can deduct up to 20 percent of claimable income. According to the NFIM, taxpayers will not have to file deductions to claim the deduction, “and may simultaneously claim this deduction and the standard deduction.”

Hickman said he started his tea company after backpacking around the world. He noticed how all of the different cultures sat over tea and talked about the community, and how “from there at a community level you could activate and start changing the community.”

Hickman says that although the Trump economy is helping his business the system was “not built for us.” But he believes that African Americans are not “excluded, where [they] are included is

in the programs as workers and the laborer” but that “you have to figure out a way to get access to get to the other side.”

Once you are there Hickman says, “There is going to be bigotry, racism, and hatred that will try to keep you where you are at… but you have to figure out how to bubble up.” Because Hickman says, “If you are going to be in this country you have to be about money.”

Hickman says there are no actual losses when you can write things off, “that’s why this side is set up for them, it was built for you to take a risk.” But Hickman says that African Americans need to “take the small risk of…thirty five dollars to get your business filed,” because if you don’t “we miss out on a couple hundred grand.”

“You are creating your own economy… it comes down to how much effort you are going to put into educating yourself, and it opens up the world; that’s were freedom lies.”

Cheryl Brownlee, the CEO of CB Communications, started her small business 20 years ago. Now, under the Trump economy Brownlee said, “A lot of things [African American business owners] had the opportunity to be a part of before are changing” and those “opportunities are being taken away.”

Brownlee started her business 20 years ago in her living room as an idea, launching CB communications officially in

2000. CB Communications has partnered with organizations like The Black Advocates for State Services, Café De California, The International Black Women’s Policy Institute, and the California Black Expo.

“We started out…in Sacramento and now we are international,” Brownlee said, working in countries like “Belize, the Bahamas, Bermuda, and [now] Ghana.”

Brownlee and Hickman’s businesses are clear cases of success but perhaps anomalies in the Trump economy. The U.S. Bureau of Labor statistics projects the growth rate of the Black labor force to be slower than the growth rate of the black population between 2018-2026. Furthermore, the overall labor force of Black Americans has been on the decline and is between 5.4 percent-10.1 percent in California.

Brownlee said, “I don’t think that when you are a small business. You have many resources” they are “limited.” The Guidant Financial Small Business Trends and Statistics show that 67 percent of small business owners face the lack of capital, marketing, and advertising efforts.

African American small businesses exist in California but a majority of them are not certified in the State, Brownlee stated.

“The small business administration …[found] that there is ten thousand African American businesses in the state of California.”

Brownlee said the Black Chamber of Commerce is making efforts to find the business owners to help them get registered.

Brownlee said this is important because this gives African American business owners the “opportunity to be on the list, so when individuals are looking for businesses they can be contracted.”

Under the Trump economy, Brownlee says, it is “big businesses [who take] contracts and if they want to work with small business they may work with small women owned businesses, not African American women, just to meet that check box.” According to the Public Law Research Institute this check box is the federal preferences in public employment, contracting, and education based on ethnicity to eradicate discrimination. “In business, the mindset is the same... racism is becoming blatantly more open” Brownlee said.

“It’s really hard” for small minority businesses, there has to be “organizations advocating on your behalf, to show the value” of African American businesses Brownlee said.

African American businesses need more access to education and tools, Brownlee stated. We need to have “more partnerships” within the African American community.

African American business owners “have to be more conscious, more aware, because we are not going to survive in this administration or any administration really going forward, unless we really understand what business is.”

CVS Apologizes After Mngrs Call Cops on Black Customer Received by Newsfinder from AP CHICAGO (AP) – CVS Health is apologizing after a black customer says white store managers in Chicago accused her of trying to use a phony coupon.

Camilla Hudson posted cellphone video of one of the managers appearing nervous. Morry Matson's left hand shakes as he calls police around 11:30 p.m. Friday.

The 53-year-old Hudson says another manager directly challenged her when she tried to use a manufacturer's coupon for a free product. She tells The Associated Press that he was “hostile.”

The Facebook video shows Matson talking to police on the phone. No action was taken when officers arrived.

CVS apologized to Hudson. The company says it doesn't tolerate discrimination against customers and that it's investigating the matter.

Matson is running for Chicago City Council. In a letter to Attorney General Jeff Sessions posted on his campaign website, he claimed he was a state delegate for Donald Trump, but the Illinois Republican Party said he wasn't a delegate to the Republican National Convention.

By James Washington The Dallas Weekly/NNPA Member I remember reviewing the letters of Paul in bible study. In doing so I was constantly reminded that one cannot look at Paul without really seeing Jesus’ amazing handiwork.

Now you need to know that I think Paul is an awesome person when it comes to the story of his life. I haven’t found a biography or autobiography of anyone in or outside of the ‘good book’ who comes close to my admiration for Paul; Jesus notwithstanding.

Because the two are so closely associated with one another, I can’t help but consider the impact of this tandem on human history.

Just in case someone wants to debate me on this by bringing up the lives of the 12 apostles, I have considered them as well as the prophets and I’m just one of those who is in awe of Paul. A very large part of the bible is devoted to Paul’s building of the early church at a time when who you worshipped was a life and death decision. Sound familiar? See World today…

Paul himself says in his letters to the church in Corinth, there was indeed a point to his suffering and persecution and the basis for most, if not all, of what he went through was a by product of his faith in Jesus Christ.

It’s another perspective of one of my favorite scriptures. “But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I (Paul) will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.

That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties.

For when I am weak, then I am strong.” 2 Corinthians 12:810.

This kind of thinking and belief led to the eventual proliferation of the church worldwide.

It also makes the point of how the lives of so few have impacted and influenced so many in the world then, and also in the world as we know it today. Forgive me if I find this a rather

fascinating fact. Paul is who he is because of his unique one on one encounter with Christ.

That encounter changed him and ultimately the world in which we live. If that be true, then our individual encounters with Christ should also have a profound effect on us and the world in which we currently live.

It is not unusual for new Christians to come under attack by old friends. It is also not unusual for new Christians to come under the attack of the world, since it is in the world that Satan has some degree of power.

I think Paul’s good news is there is a place of refuge for all of us, when this happens. He uses himself as an example to follow.

If I surrender my weaknesses to the power of Christ and subjugate my will to that of the Lord’s, then I become empowered to deal with whatever is thrown my way.

Life, the Christian life, is funny that way. It places what I have described as a bulls- eye on your back, designed to distinguish you from those non believers around you.

It, your faith, also sets you up and apart to do great things in the name of Jesus Christ, my personal Lord and Savior. I guess what I’m really saying is when the going gets extremely tough, check the human being Paul.

Like Christ, he’s been through and has experienced the worst that life has to offer. But because of his belief system, he’s experienced the best of God’s promises. It’s like a refresher course and I just wanted to let you know where I go during difficult times.

You might also find some answers there. The point I’m trying to make is that in the eyes of God, one’s weaknesses are welcomed opportunities for God to show up and show out.

Have you ever wondered why those who have been through so much are able to stand and witness mightily for Christ? Reexamine the reality of God’s grace and you just might get your answer.

More than a third of the 101 acting nominations for the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards went to ethnic minorities, according to an analysis by The Associated Press. That's up from a quarter of the field last year, when Brown (''This Is Us'') and Glover (''Atlanta'') won top acting awards.

Both men are nominated again, along with noteworthy first-timers including Latino actors Ricky Martin and Penelope Cruz for “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story,'' Tiffany Haddish for “Saturday Night Live,'' Issa Rae for “Insecure'' and John Legend for “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert.'' Darren Criss, who is of Filipino descent, was also nominated for “American Crime Story.''

Sandra Oh, the Canadian-born actress of “Grey's Anatomy'' fame, became the first nominee of Asian descent in the leading drama actress category. Oh, who earned five supporting actress bids for “Grey's,'' has earned critical praise for her role as a spy hunting a female assassin in BBC America's “Killing Eve.'' “I think we're all happy with the direction we're going.

This is the most diverse class of performer nominees we've had ... which is fantastic,'' Maury McIntyre, TV academy president, said Thursday after the nominations for the Sept. 17 awards were announced.

Only one of this year's categories, supporting actor in a drama, lacked any performers of color. In three categories, more than half the field are minorities.

That includes supporting actor in a comedy series, with black actors Tituss Burguss (''Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt''), Brian Tyree Henry (''Atlanta'') and Kenan Thompson (''Saturday Night Live'') and Tony Shalhoub (''The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel''), of Lebanese descent, competing with Louie Anderson (''Baskets'') Alec Baldwin (''Saturday Night Live'') and Henry Winkler (''Barry'').

The TV industry has faced pressure to change in recent years, including from a multi-ethnic civil rights coalition formed after major networks fielded a fall 1999 slate of new shows with only white stars. Networks and producers have taken steps to boost opportunities, but with uneven results.

Leonard James III, chair of the NAACP Image Awards committee, said last year that a long record of fighting for civil rights is behind the significant African-American gains.

During the summer of 2016, while touring to and from many states competing in events labeled as “Open Black Rodeo” we were confronted with several issues. The marketing tactics used by some promoters were to use the word “Black’ in their event title. This was done to attract a specific targeted audience.

The use of this wording often gave the consumer the impression they were purchasing tickets to an event where the rodeo contestants were actually African American. This was not the case.

Our rig [truck, trailer, horses, and people] was almost always the only contestants of color in the arena.

Our first thoughts were if this show, with this label, flops and looks bad, it would have a domino effect on the entire world

This was our world until the promoter decided to stop paying the bills when he fell short of cash. We knew this type of negativity would also have a negative impact on our world of rodeo.

We decided then that we didn’t need the promoter to do the show, he needed us. With that in mind we set out on our own.

Lead by a business owner and professional tie down calf roper, this organization consist of many professionals from all walks of life. But most importantly, we are all cowboys who bring to the arena floor over 50 + years of rodeo experience.

Our focus is to educate you, while we entertain you. Our history books intentionally left out many, if not all positive accomplishments made by people of color who contributed to the molding/ creation of the old west.

We bring to life characters such as the Pony Express Mail run, Sherriff Bass Reeves, Nat Love and ‘The Cowboys.’ In addition we have included events for our young’un’s which allow them a platform to begin their rodeo careers which are the Jr Barrel race and Jr Breakaway roping.

By PHILIP MARCELO and JEFF KAROUB Associated Press SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) _ A liberal woman of color with zero name recognition and little funding takes down a powerful, long serving congressman from her own political party.

When Tahirah Amatul-Wadud heard about Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's stunning upset over U.S. Rep. Joe Crowley in New York's Democratic primary last month, the first-time candidate saw parallels with her own longshot campaign for Congress in western Massachusetts.

The 44-year-old Muslim, African-American civil rights lawyer, who is taking on a 30-year congressman and ranking Democrat on the influential House Ways and Means Committee, said she wasn't alone, as encouragement, volunteers and donations started pouring in.

“We could barely stay on top of the residual love,'' said Amatul-Wadud, U.S. Rep. Richard Neal's lone challenger in the state's Sept. 4 Democratic primary. “It sent a message to all of our volunteers, voters and supporters that winning is very possible.''

From Congress to state legislatures and school boards, Muslim Americans spurred to action by the anti-Muslim policies and rhetoric of President Donald Trump and his supporters are running for elected offices in numbers not seen since before the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, say Muslim groups and political observers.

Many, like Amatul-Wadud, hope to ride the surge of progressive activism within the Democratic Party that delivered Ocasio-Cortez's unlikely win and could help propel the Democrats back to power in November.

Still, the path to victory can be tougher for a Muslim American. Some promising campaigns already have fizzled out while many more face strong anti-Muslim backlash.

In Michigan, Democrat candidate for governor Abdul ElSayed continues to face unfounded claims from a GOP rival that he has ties to the controversial Muslim Brotherhood, even though Republican and Democratic politicians alike have denounced the accusations as “conspiracy theories.”

In Rochester, Minnesota, mayoral candidate Regina Mustafa has notified authorities of at least two instances where anti-Muslim threats were posted on her social media accounts.\ And in Arizona, U.S. Senate candidate Deedra Abboud received a torrent of Islamophobic attacks on Facebook last July that prompted outgoing U.S. Sen. Jeff Flake, the Republican lawmaker Abboud is hoping to replace, to come to her defense on Twitter.

“I'm a strong believer that we have to face this rhetoric,'' said Abboud, who has also had right-wing militant groups the Fraternal Order of Alt-Knights and the Proud Boys stage armed protests her campaign events. “We can't ignore it or pretend like it's a fringe element anymore. We have to let the ugly face show so that we can decide if that is us.''

There were as many as 90 Muslim-Americans running for national or statewide offices this election cycle, a number that Muslim groups say was unprecedented, at least in the post-9/11 era.

But recent primaries have whittled the field down to around 50, a number that still far exceeds the dozen or so that ran in 2016, said Shaun Kennedy, co-founder of Jetpac, a Massachusetts nonprofit that helps train Muslim-American candidates.

Among the candidates to fall short were California physician Asif Mahmood, who placed third in last month's primary for state insurance commissioner, despite raising more than $1 million. And in Texas, wealthy businessman Tahir Javed finished a distant second in his Democratic primary for Congress, despite an endorsement from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer

of New York.

Nine candidates for Congress are still in the running, according to Jetpac's tally. At least 18 others are campaigning for state legislature and 10 more seek major statewide and local offices, such as governor, mayor and city council. Even more are running for more modest offices like local planning board and school committee.

The next critical stretch of primaries is in August.

In Michigan, at least seven Muslim Americans are on the Aug. 7 ballot, including El-Sayed, who could become the nation's first Muslim governor.

In Minnesota, the decision by Keith Ellison, the nation's first Muslim congressman, to run for state attorney general has set off a political frenzy for his congressional seat that includes two Muslim candidates, both Democrats: Ilhan Omar, the country's first Somali-American state lawmaker, and Jamal Abdulahi, a Somali-American activist.

But historic wins in those and other races are far from assured, cautions Geoffrey Skelley, an associate editor at Sabato's Crystal Ball, a nonpartisan political analysis website run by the University of Virginia's Center for Politics.

Omar's chances of emerging from a field of five Democratic candidates in Minnesota's Aug. 14 primary was bolstered by a recent endorsement from the state Democratic Party, but El-Sayed is an underdog in his gubernatorial race, he said.

Other Muslim-American candidates might fare better in Michigan, which has one of the nation's largest Arab-American populations, Skelley added.

There, former state Rep. Rashida Tlaib has raised more money than her Democratic rivals in the race to succeed Democratic Rep. John Conyers, who resigned last year amid allegations of sexual misconduct. Former Obama administration official Fayrouz Saad is also running as a Democrat in the wide open race to succeed Republican Rep. David Trott, who isn't seeking re-election.

Either could become the first Muslim woman elected to Congress, which has only ever had two Muslim members: outgoing Ellison and Rep. Andre Carson, an Indiana Democrat seeking re-election.

Saad, who served most recently as director of Detroit's Office of Immigrant Affairs, recognizes the importance of representing her community in an era of rising Islamophobia.

The 35-year-old broke from the conservative Republican politics of her Lebanese immigrant parents following the 9/11 attacks because she felt Arabs and Muslims were unfairly targeted.

“I felt the way to push back against that was to be at the table,'' said Saad, adding that her parents' political leanings have also since moved to the left. “We have to step up and be voices for our communities and not wait for others to speak on behalf of us.''

But not all Muslim candidates feel that way.

In San Diego, California, 37-year-old Republican congressional candidate Omar Qudrat declined to comment on how Islamophobia has impacted his campaign, including instances when his faith have been called into question by members of his own political party.

Instead, the political newcomer, who is one of at least three Muslim Republicans running nationwide this year, provided a statement touting his main campaign issues as faces Democratic U.S. Rep. Scott Peters in November: addressing San Diego's high number of homeless military veterans, improving public education and expanding economic opportunities for city residents.

“Running for public office is about advancing the interests of your constituents and the American people,'' Qudrat's statement reads. “Nothing else.''

MENTAL ILLNESS IS NOT A CHOICE Ja’Nell Gore South Kern Sol Youth Perspective Too often social media gives a misconception of what depression looks like and sometimes even romanticizes it.

Every time something bad happens and a person gets sad does not mean they are all of a sudden depressed. No, depression is not something that someone is just feeling this period but once they get food it will all be gone.

Depression can hit a person out of nowhere and will just sit on them. I know this from experience. I know the feeling of being out with friends and when I should be having a great time I just feel like crying and going home under my cover. Trust me, depression is not something to claim just for fun. Sitting in a doctor’s office, being told that you are going to be put on pills that you may have to take for the rest of your life is not something most people would enjoy. Especially if they are as stubborn as me and refuse to take meds.

Also, this whole misconception about depression having a ‘look’ is all fake. We see everyday people who smile and laugh but are hurting, deep down, on the inside, and nobody knows.

I’ve been one of those people that decide that acting goofy and crazy all the time is the best way to be, even if that’s not how I am feeling. I have sat and made a whole room laugh will being on the

verge of tears, but the smiling makes them look like happy tears.

This also goes beyond depression into anxiety.

Being diagnosed with anxiety does not just consist of being nervous every once in a while over a test or talking to the person you like; it’s constantly worrying if you are doing something wrong and stressing over nothing. I have gone from taking notes in math class to having to walk out because I can’t stop shaking and crying.

I’ve spent lots of time just sitting in my counselor’s office and in certain teachers’ classes trying to calm down but not nearly enough to cover as many attacks that I’ve experienced on campus.

Why? I get too nervous to go to the adults that say I can come to them. I fear that they only say that they’re there for me because it is the ‘right’ thing to do or they want be nice. I’d hate to be the distraction that took them from their work or put a downer on their mood.

Anxiety has been a constant thing on my mind for the past three years and one of my hardest struggles in high school. It’s the reason I have turned down different events, parties, and opportunities to just go out of fear.

I asked for none of this, and I would not wish these upon anyone else, and to act like these illnesses are cute, or just part of a trend, is irresponsible and dangerous.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) _ The founder of a thriving Twin Cities startup company is providing guidance to other black tech entrepreneurs in overcoming a dysfunctional home life on the path to success.

Clarence Bethea founded Upsie, a technology company that sells warranties that undercut retailers’ prices.

Founded in 2016, Upsie now has more than 14,000 users, Minnesota Public Radio reported .

Bethea grew up in a dysfunctional home. His father abused his mother, and he had to overcome homelessness and drug dealing.

“It was a lot of work, but I met the right people at the right time who changed the trajectory of my life,’’ said Bethea, 37. “I received guidance and support from

them along the way.’’

He went to Bemidji State University in 2002 on a basketball scholarship but dropped out of college to pursue entrepreneurship.

Bethea said his acceptance into Techstars Retail, an international startup accelerator, played an important role in his success. The accelerator offerings funding and mentorship for a three-month period. Upsie was one of 10 startups selected in 2017.

“It took away the black or white thing,’’ he said.

“It made people judge me on who I am, how I am as a founder, what our team is doing every day and the business.’’

The recipients are: Terrance De’Louth, outstanding senior at East Bakersfield High School, serves as Vice President of EB’s BSU, is an active member of Project BEST (Black Excellence in Scholarship and Teaching) and a member of EBH Varsity Swim, Basketball, and Football Teams. His future plans include attending CSU and major in Accounting.

Malcolm Francisco, senior at South High School, scored in the 99th percentile for US high school students on the SAT, active member of project of BEST, and has remained on the honor roll throughout his entire school career. He is enrolled in SHS prestigious Math Science Engineering Academy. Malcolm plans to attend UCLA and earn a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering.

Bakersfield Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. hosted its annual Love Luncheon Scholarship Program, Saturday, February 17, 2018 from 11:00a.m. -2:00 p.m. at the Stockdale Country Club.

Tickets sold for $50.00 per person with proceeds benefitting the chapters’ scholarship fund. Dr. Coley has over 26 years of academic and administrative experience. She is the sixth President of California State Polytechnic University, Pomona-and the first woman to serve in that role.

Woman Burned as Gas is Pumped into Garbage Can in Her Backseat

MOSES LAKE, Wash. (AP) _ Authorities say a Washington woman suffered severe burns after gasoline fumes ignited when gas was being pumped into a garbage can in a car’s backseat.

KOMO-TV reports the Grant County Sheriff’s Office says the woman, who was a passenger early Saturday morning at a Cascade Valley Grocery convenience store, was smoking a cigarette, which ignited the flames.

Deputies later found a large amount of marijuana in the car’s trunk.

A bystander took the woman to Samaritan Healthcare in Moses Lake.

The male driver who was pumping the gas ran away.
