By Stacy M. Brown NNPA Newswire Contributor Karen Carter Richards, the publisher and CEO of the Houston Forward Times, was born in a small town in Arizona; her family moved to Houston when she was just one month old. “I went to elementary, junior high and high school in Houston. After high school, I realized that I had an interest in the medical fields, so I applied for and got accepted to the DeBakey High School for Health Professions,” said Richards, who serves as 1st Vice Chair of the NNPA Association Executive Board. “I’ve spent my entire life in Houston.” Fifty-eight years ago, Carter Richards’ father, Julius P. Carter, founded the award-winning, Houston Forward Times. By 1971, the Forward Times was one of the top three newspapers in Houston. Sadly, that same year, Julius P. Carter died leaving his wife, Lenora “Doll” Carter, to run the family business. “As a child, I always had to work in the family business,” Carter Richards said. “When I was 7 years old, I had a newspaper route in my neighborhood that my dad set up.” Carter Richards continued: “My father and mother always said that I needed to learn every aspect of the business…the only thing I didn’t learn to do was run our press.” The Houston native left her hometown to attend Xavier University as a biology major, but returned to Houston after being homesick and missing and worrying about her mother. Carter Richards attended college at the University of St. Thomas and the University of Houston-Downtown. Later, she returned to her roots and the family business, following in the footsteps of two publishing trailblazers, her father and her mother. Carter Richards was about 22 when she surmised that her mother really needed her assistance. “[My mother] had been running the newspaper by herself since the death of my father in 1971,” Richards said. “I found it very hard to walk away from a business that had taken care of me all of my life.” For Carter Richards, who took over after Doll Carter’s death in 2010, everything has proven bigger in Texas. Through hard work and being dedicated to her parents’ legacy, Carter Richards has helped cement the Houston Forward Times as the South’s largest Black-owned and independently published newspaper, carrying on the legacy of her parents. She’s expanded the newspaper’s mission and has worked diligently to ensure that it remains the most trusted voice for African Americans and all readers in and around Houston.
The Forward Times has been honored with various local and national awards and now boasts a paid circulation of roughly 65,000, according to its website. “My parents always had a love for the community and I guess it passed on to me,” Carter Richards said, admitting that running the newspaper wasn’t something that she thought she’d ultimately do. With great power comes even greater responsibility and Richards said that she understands what can’t be broken is the trust and commitment that the Forward Times and other African American-owned newspapers enjoy in the community. “The Black Press has always been and will continue to be relevant. We are the voice, the true voice of our people,” Carter Richards said. “We have recorded our history for 191 years like no other media could ever do. We have recorded many stories…our celebrations, our injustices and those hidden treasured stories that came from our communities that we have always found value in,” she said. Serving on the board of the NNPA has been a tremendous honor, Carter Richards said; it’s just another way in which she walks in her parents’ footsteps. “My family has been a part of NNPA for over 50 years. Both of my parents held positions on the executive board, so I am very proud to carry on that legacy,” Carter Richards said. Carter Richards also expressed some pride when noting how the Forward Times has adapted to digital formats and the World Wide Web. Carter Richards said the Web has, in a sense, transformed the weekly into a daily and the Forward Times’ digital and print demographics provide the paper with great coverage. The Houston Forward Times has won the MillerCoors NNPA Merit Award for Digital Excellence multiple times. Of the more important messages she can relay to readers and others, Carter Richards said that one stands out. “Support the Black Press,” Carter Richards said. “If you are not subscribing to the Black newspapers in your city, please do it today. No one will tell your story like the Black Press will. There is strength in numbers and we need the

World Sickle Cell Day
KC Morse (left) and Dr. Biree Andemariam say that more work needs to be done to empower sickle cell disease patients and to increase awareness about SCD in the medical community. (KC Morse/Dr. Biree Andemariam)
By Stacy M. Brown NNPA Newswire Contributor It’s been 100 years since sickle cell disease (SCD), a hereditary blood disorder, was first discovered. And, according to health experts, it’s no secret that an alarming number of children and adolescence have died, and the condition remained in the province of pediatrics. Known as “the silent killer,” SCD is one of the most common genetic disorders in the United States where about 100,000 citizens currently live with the disease. With Tuesday, June 19 deemed World Sickle Cell Day, researchers said approximately 270,000 babies worldwide are born each year with sickle cell disease. With one in 365 African American babies born with SCD and one in 13 born with the trait, Black people are disproportionately affected by the disease, which also primarily affects those of Latin American, Indian, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern descent. Actress and director KC Morse, one of the many African Americans living with SCD, recalled her first major pain crisis, where she didn’t have the support of her loved ones. Morse told NNPA Newswire that she was attending college in Allentown, Pennsylvania while her parents were three hours away in Connecticut on a late Saturday night when she returned to her dorm room and began experiencing the excruciating pain known to just about every SCD patient. “It was my first experience on my own outside of my comfort zone,” said Morse, now 25. “When it happened, I was really afraid to call anyone. It was 2 a.m. and I felt alone, and I wasn’t sure about calling an ambulance or campus safety because I wasn’t Continued on page A5
US OKs Marijuana-Based Drug for Seizures By MATTHEW PERRONE AP Health Writer WASHINGTON (AP) _ U.S. health regulators on Monday approved the first prescription drug made from marijuana, a milestone that could spur more research into a drug that remains illegal under federal law, despite growing legalization for recreational and medical use. The Food and Drug Administration approved the medication, called Epidiolex, to treat two rare forms of epilepsy that begin in childhood. But it's not quite medical marijuana. The strawberry-flavored syrup is a purified form of a chemical ingredient found in the cannabis plant _ but not the one that gets users high. It's not yet clear why the ingredient, called cannabidiol, or CBD, reduces seizures in some people with epilepsy. British drugmaker GW Pharmaceuticals studied the drug in more than 500 children and adults with hard-to-treat seizures, overcoming numerous legal hurdles that have long stymied research into cannabis. FDA officials said the drug reduced seizures when combined with older epilepsy drugs. The FDA has previously approved synthetic versions of another cannabis ingredient for medical use, including severe weight loss in patients with HIV. Epidiolex is essentially a pharmaceutical-grade version CBD
oil, which some parents already use to treat children with epilepsy. CBD is one of more than 100 chemicals found in marijuana. But it doesn't contain THC, the ingredient that gives marijuana its mind-altering effect. Physicians say it's important to have a consistent, government-regulated version. “I'm really happy we have a product that will be much cleaner and one that I know what it is,” said Ellaine Wirrell, director of the Mayo Clinic's program for childhood epilepsy. “In the artisanal products there's often a huge variation in doses from bottle to bottle depending on where you get it.” Side effects with the drug include diarrhea, vomiting, fatigue and sleep problems. Several years ago, Allison Hendershot considered relocating her family to Colorado, one of the first states to legalize marijuana and home to a large network of CBD producers and providers. Her 13-year-old daughter, Molly, has suffered from severe seizures since she was 4 months old. But then Hendershot learned about a trial of Epidiolex at New York University. “I preferred this to some of those other options because it's is a commercial product that has gone through rigorous testing,” said Hendershot, who lives in Rochester, New York.
Medical Milestone:
Since receiving Epidiolex, Hendershot says her daughter has been able to concentrate more and has had fewer “drop” seizures _ in which her entire body goes limp and collapses.\ CBD oil is currently sold online and in specialty shops across the U.S., though its legal status remains murky. Most producers say their oil is made from hemp, a plant in the cannabis family that contains little THC and can be legally farmed in a number of states for clothing, food and other uses.\ The impact of Monday's approval on these products is unclear. The FDA has issued warnings to CBD producers that claimed their products could treat specific diseases, such as cancer or Alzheimer's. Only products that have received formal FDA approval can make such claims, typically requiring clinical trials costing millions. Most CBD producers sidestep the issue by making only broad claims about general health and well-being. Industry supporters downplayed the impact of the FDA approval. “I don't know a mom or dad in their right mind who is going to change what's already working,” said Heather Jackson, Continued on page A6
Association Removes Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Name from Award
CHICAGO (AP) - A division of the American Library Association has voted to remove Laura Ingalls Wilder’s name from a major children’s book award over concerns with how the early-to-mid 20th century author portrayed blacks and Native Americans. The Association for Library Service to Children’s board made the unanimous decision Saturday at a meeting in New Orleans. The name has been changed to the Children’s Literature Legacy Award. The association says the work of Wilder - best known for her “Little House on the Prairie” novels - “includes expressions of stereotypical attitudes inconsistent with ALSC’s core values.” The first award was given to Wilder in 1954. The ALSC says Wilder’s work continues to be published and read but her “legacy is complex” and “not universally embraced.” The American Library Association is based in Chicago.
Girl Pushed by Texas Officer at Pool Party Settles for $150K McKINNEY, Texas (AP) - A bikini-clad black teenager who was shoved to the ground by a white Texas police officer has settled a federal lawsuit against him and the city of McKinney for almost $150,000. The legal guardian of then-15-year-old Dajerria Becton filed a $5 million lawsuit following the June 2015 incident that was captured on cellphone video. The lawsuit alleged negligence, false arrest, assault and excessive force by then-Cpl. Eric Casebolt, who was among several officers responding to reports of a disturbance at the party. Casebolt later resigned. Court documents show the settlement approved May 24 provides Becton with $148,850 and six others on the lawsuit each receive $6,000. Casebolt and the city deny wrongdoing, but say the settlement avoids the uncertainty and cost of a lawsuit.
