LOS ANGELES (AP) – A stretch of road in Los Angeles has been renamed after former President Barack Obama. A concert and ceremony Saturday unveiled Obama Boulevard. The street replaced Rodeo Road, a 3 1/2-mile street that runs across the city’s historic black neighborhood. It also intersects with Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and further establishes a “presidential row’’ that includes Washington, Adams and Jefferson boulevards. “I get to live in a lifetime where we elected our first By Stacy M. After the U.S. Supreme Court banned housing discrimination, and segregation was scaled back, black residents moved into the formerly white enclave of Baldwin Hills and established the first of L.A.’s black middle- and upper-class neighborhoods. Black-owned businesses and cultural activities once thrived on Crenshaw Boulevard. But over the years, they struggled and there are ongoing efforts to revitalize the commercial corridor. Earl Ofari Hutchinson, a political analyst and author who has lived in the area for 50 years, said he hopes the name change will lead to more investments in the neighborhood. “The area needs not just street name change, but also fresh programs, initiatives and spending on jobs, education, and housing programs for the mostly black and Hispanic low-income residents that live on or near Obama Boulevard,’’ Hutchinson said. “This will truly be the greatest way to pay tribute to Obama.’’

Black Girls Disappear

By Stacy M. Brown NNPA Newswire Correspondent
The epidemic of missing and mostly forgotten African American girls continues to spread throughout the United States. While the names change, the stories remain similar. Miah Gourdine, just 16-years-old, was headed to school on Tuesday, April 23, but when attendance was taken at Carolina Forest High School in Horry, South Carolina, Miah was marked absent.

What’s worse, she never returned home. While authorities have speculated that because Miah is new to the area, she may have tried to return to her native New Jersey. However, that’s no consolation for her family who haven’t a clue as to her whereabouts. When last seen, Miah was wearing blue jeans, a black and yellow shirt, black Puma sneakers and a clear fanny pack – certainly not the sign of a runaway. Horry police have asked those with information to call

One week earlier on Friday, April 12, in Washington, D.C., 15-year-old Aniyah Flythe was seen walking along the 300 block of Anacostia Road in the Southeast section of the city. Aniyah hasn’t been seen since. Described by the Metropolitan Police Department as 5-feet-5-inches tall and 160 pounds, Aniyah has black hair Continued on page A5

Bakersfield Settles Lawsuit over Traffic Stop Arrest

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (AP) – The city of Bakersfield has agreed to $60,000 settlement of a lawsuit by a black man who was arrested after refusing to answer questions when the vehicle he was riding in was pulled over by police. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of Bakersfield resident Robert Mitchell by the American Civil Liberties Union Foundations of Southern and Northern California. The suit claimed that in March 2017, Mitchell was riding in a car with three other black people when police used trivial reasons including air fresheners hanging from the rearview mirror as a pretext for a traffic stop. The suit said Mitchell was jailed for 12 hours but was never charged with a crime. City Attorney Ginny Gennaro told The Bakersfield Californian on Monday there was no admission of liability.
