Senator Won’t Take PAC Money

Harris joined Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) and Cory Booker (D-N.J.), who have also publicly announced that they would not accept corporate PAC money.

The Citizens United decision handed down by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2010 created a situation where seemingly endless amounts of money can flow into the political system.

“I think that money has had such an outsized influence on politics,” Sen. Harris said on The Breakfast Club. “We’re all supposed to have an equal vote, but money has now really tipped the balance between an individual having equal power in an election to a corporation. So, I’ve actually made a decision since I had that conversation that I’m not going to accept corporate PAC checks.”

Harris, who has been thought of as a possible presidential candidate in 2020 ,but has not said she is running, said that a recent exchange at a town hall influenced her decision not to take corporate PAC checks.

“I was asked that question and I wasn’t expecting the question. And I thought about it afterwards. Many remarked that public pressure has worked regarding the issue of taking PAC money. Sen. Bernie Sanders made corporate influence on politics a centerpiece of his 2016 campaign for the White House. He raised record amounts of small campaign donations.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) _ The pungent smell of the rotten durian fruit at an Australian university library has been mistaken for a gas leak, prompting an evacuation of the building.

Specialist crews wearing masks searched the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology university campus library on Saturday, but all they found was rotting durian in a cupboard.

About 600 staff and students had cleared the building.

A Metropolitan Fire Brigade spokesman said the smell alarmed staff and students as it permeated the air-conditioning system.

Durian is a tropical fruit known for its strong smell. It is commonly banned from hotel rooms and public transport across Southeast Asia.

Subway Masterbater Caught Ripping Up His Wanted Poster

NEW YORK (AP) _ Police say a New York man wanted masturbating on a subway train was arrested _ but not until after officers saw him ripping down wanted posters of himself.

The photo of Kosta Kolaci (KOH’-stah koh-LAH’cheeh) was taken earlier this month by a rider who was in the same subway car. The rider handed the photos over to police, who then made wanted posters.

The 61-year-old suspect was arrested Friday, when officers saw him in a Brooklyn station, tearing down the posters.

He’s charged with public lewdness. A phone number couldn’t be found for Kolaci.

Wells Fargo Commitment to Black Homebuyers

By Stacy M. Brown The Washington Informer/NNPA Member In 2017, Wells Fargo announced a commitment to create 250,000 African American homeowners by 2027.

In addition to lending $60 billion for home purchases over that 10-year period, the banking giant has committed to increase the diversity of its sales team, particularly African American home mortgage consultants.

Further, bank officials said they’ve dedicated $15 million for initiatives focused on homebuyer education and counseling for Black families.

This commitment is only part of the evidence that Wells Fargo has made over the past year to show that it values customers of color, said Cerita Battles, the senior vice president and head of retail diverse segments at Wells Fargo Home Mortgage.

“It is really important to understand that, as we made our intentions public, we did so with some of the country’s largest and most influential African American organizations standing by our side,” she said, noting that those organizations included the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB), the National Urban League (NUL) and the NAACP. “Their support not only added a measure of accountability and a great deal of legitimacy to this commitment, but also the power and scope of their collective constituent networks,” Battles said.

NAREB and affiliates of NUL currently are engaged in homebuyer education and counseling to help African Americans prepare for homeownership while the NAACP’s Economic Development arm assists constituents with financial preparedness, which is a key component to being ready to purchase a home, she said.

“And, our commitment aligns very well with NAREB’s ‘2 million in 5 years’ initiative which is aimed at creating 2 million new African American homeowners in five years,” Battles said.

The commitment appears headed in a positive direction.

year and 99.7 percent of the bank’s first-year goal despite a falling mortgage market, Battles said.

The bank also dedicated more than $1.8 million in grants to support homebuyer education and counseling for African American audiences, exceeding its first-year goal.

Battles said the majority of support from that work comes primarily from three areas of the Wells Fargo Housing Foundation, including the National Housing Grant Program, the Homeownership Counseling Grant Program, and down payment assistance grants through NeighborhoodLIFT. “We are also supporting new initiatives like HomeFree-USA’s Center for Financial Advancement Program which will offer financial education and expose students to the mortgage industry as a career option on the campuses of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs),” Battles said. “And, the future holds great promise as we have several improvements that have been put in place for 2018 including doubling the amount of money dedicated to NeighborhoodLIFT.” Battles said that Wells Fargo also plans to pilot new pricing models for home mortgages under $175,000 and to launch a national housing counseling program that the company can share across the entire mortgage industry.

The company’s homeownership commitment to African Americans has allowed them to also look inward.

“There is no doubt the mortgage industry lacks diversity, especially when it comes to the sales force. So, for us, one of the important pieces to this puzzle is to begin building a pipeline of new, young, energetic, bright minds who might not normally consider mortgage lending as a career choice,” Battles said. “We hope to achieve this through partnerships with organizations that can help get the word out to young African Americans as they grow and shape their thoughts and plans about the future.”

For instance, Wells Fargo is partnering with the National Association of Minority Mortgage Bankers of America which has built connections to HBCUs. Battles said that those connections were great conduits for Wells Fargo to provide information either with materials or by showing up in person for events.

Comparably, HomeFree-USA’s Center for Financial Advancement Symposium is just beginning a program that Wells Fargo is supporting that works with similar intent.

“In fact, I recently had an opportunity to speak at their first event at Fisk University, a historically Black university located in Nashville, Tennessee,” Battles said, noting that she was counted among the 10 Black women executives from the mortgage industry who had the opportunity to speak from the heart about their personal and professional journeys.

“We described the attributes needed to be successful in life in front of 31 young women and faculty members,” Battles said.

“We know that we can’t just depend on the coming workforce of the future. We also do our best to add seasoned veterans to our sales force. And this is really foundational; we leverage our relationships with realtors, builders and nonprofits to ensure that folks who are already in the market know that Wells Fargo is not only a viable option, but also has a program going that focuses on African American borrowers and their communities.”

The approach is two-pronged, Battles continued.

“We are engaging and attracting current experts while inspiring new generations to consider [the mortgage industry] as a career possibility for their future,” Battles said.

Federal Ad Spending in Black Newspapers

By Stacy M. Brown NNPA Newswire Contributor A long-awaited report that details what federal agencies spend on advertising in African American-owned newspapers is finally near completion, according to officials in the General Accounting Office (GAO).

The report comes as the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), a trade organization made up of more than 200 Black-owned media companies, that reach more than 20 million people each week, celebrates 191 years of the Black Press.

It also comes ahead of critical midterm election season in which the NNPA announced a historic voter registration drive that has a goal of registering 5 million new, Black voters.

“We now have July as the projected completion and issuance time frame for the report,” said Charles Young, the managing director of public affairs for the GAO, which acts as the authoritative audit unit for the federal government.

Democratic D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton has been at the forefront of a multi-year effort pushing for a new report. CBC members and others have since joined her call.

“The Black Press allow us to reach people who need to hear the real story and the power of the African American print press is validation and people appreciate the real story,” said CBC Chairman Cedric Richmond (D-La.). “When you advertise in the Black Press, you get a sense of credibility.”

The federal government serves as the largest advertiser in the country and a 2007 GAO report on advertising spending revealed that just five percent of the $4.3 billion available for advertising campaigns went to minority-owned businesses.

Five agencies—the Department of Defense, Department of the Treasury, the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of the Interior, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration —were singled out in the 2007 report, the most recent audit available.

“It’s important that news outlets and media companies owned or published by individuals of color, with a primary mission to serve communities of color, have the same opportunities

as other media outlets—especially as African Americans and Hispanic Americans continue to grow in number in the United States,” Norton said. “We believe that this request for a new report is particularly timely, because GAO will be conducting an audit of spending by federal agencies on public relations and advertising.”

In a historic announcement during NNPA’s Black Press Week in Washington, D.C., NNPA President and CEO Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr., said the organization and several others, including Rainbow Push, National Action Network, the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education, the National Association of Real Estate Brokers, the NAACP, the National Urban League, CBC, and the AME Church had partnered for an unprecedented voter registration drive.

Chavis called the drive a coordinated effort to combat hate and dissention and to spread love and unity.

“Come November, we’re going to have the largest Black voter turnout in American history. This is a payback year,” Chavis said. “The most important election of our lifetime will be the 2018 midterm elections.”

It’s become apparent for those who tabulate votes and for those who analyze elections, that the Black vote can be the defining factor, said NNPA Chair Dorothy R. Leavell.

“The Black vote can determine who wins and who loses and it’s important that people don’t take the Black vote for granted,” Leavell said.

She said it was crucial that the GAO issue a new report so that it’s apparent which agencies are giving Black-owned newspapers a fair share in advertising spending.

Young acknowledged that the report has taken quite some time—Norton and a host of U.S. Congress and Senate members formally called for the audit in March 2016.

“Things can sometimes take longer than planned,” Young said. “But [July] is the expectation.”

DJ Reed has ‘A lot to Prove’ with 49ers After Fifth-Round Selection

BY KELLIS ROBINETT AP News If you thought D.J. Reed was all smiles when the San Francisco 49ers drafted him with the 142nd overall pick in the fifth round of the NFL Draft on Saturday, think again.

“Being a fifth-round draft pick, I honestly feel disrespected,” Reed said during a conference call with media, “but I’m blessed the 49ers picked me up. I’ve got a lot to prove still.”

Reed was a standout cornerback for two years at Kansas State. He joined the Wildcats as a junior-college transfer out of Cerritos College in Norwalk, Calif., and made an instant impact.

As a sophomore, Reed was the team’s top cover corner and piled up 78 tackles and three interceptions.

As a junior, he evolved into one of the top defensive backs in the Big 12 and also emerged as a dangerous kick returner. Reed had 47 tackles and four interceptions on defense, and he had 835 yards and two touchdowns as a return man.

Reed played so well with the Wildcats that he chose

to declare for the NFL Draft early rather than return to K-State for his senior year.

He thought he deserved to go in the third round, if not even earlier.

“That’s definitely going to stick with me until I’m done playing,” Reed said. “I don’t know, man, I just feel disrespected. But like I said, I’m happy, but I feel like I’ve got a lot to prove. A lot of corners went before me and that’s definitely going to be something I’m going to remember.”

Reed projects to play slot corner for the 49ers and also hopes to return kicks.

San Francisco general manager John Lynch picked him, in large part, because of his versatility.

“D.J. Reed is a guy we’re extremely excited about,” Lynch said at his NFL Draft news conference. “... While he can play some nickel and free safety, we also think he can hold up along the outside corner. He’s done that at K-State. He’s another great punt returner. We’ve got a lot of those, and that’s a good thing.”

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) _ The founder of a thriving Twin Cities startup company is providing guidance to other black tech entrepreneurs in overcoming a dysfunctional home life on the path to success.

Clarence Bethea founded Upsie, a technology company that sells warranties that undercut retailers’ prices.

Founded in 2016, Upsie now has more than 14,000 users, Minnesota Public Radio reported .

Bethea grew up in a dysfunctional home. His father abused his mother, and he had to overcome homelessness and drug dealing.

“It was a lot of work, but I met the right people at the right time who changed the trajectory of my life,’’ said Bethea, 37. “I received guidance and support from

them along the way.’’

He went to Bemidji State University in 2002 on a basketball scholarship but dropped out of college to pursue entrepreneurship.

Bethea said his acceptance into Techstars Retail, an international startup accelerator, played an important role in his success. The accelerator offerings funding and mentorship for a three-month period. Upsie was one of 10 startups selected in 2017.

“It took away the black or white thing,’’ he said.

With $192 million in ticket sales so far, the film is expected to take in $218 million over the four-day President’s Day weekend and an incredible $361 million worldwide. According to ComScore, global ticket sales were set to reach $387 million over the weekend.

According to Entertainment magazine, “Black Panther” is already the eighth-largest single-day gross for the film industry ever and the third-biggest opening for a superhero movie.

“Black Panther” scored a $75.8 million opening day.

“The Avengers” opened with $80 million and “Avengers: Age of Ultron” opened with $84 million. The film also became the highest-grossing title in history at 33 AMC Theaters across the country, according to a report in the Hollywood Reporter.

Cell Locks Failed During Brawl at Lerdo Pre-Trial Facility

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (AP) _ Officials say cell locks failed during a brawl involving 120 prisoners at a central California jail that left four inmates injured last week.

Tyson Davis, the chief deputy who oversees the Lerdo Pre-Trial Facility, told KBAK-TV Wednesday that the locks are old and inmates have begun to tamper with them, with some success.

The Kern County Sheriff’s Office said several inmates became disruptive Feb. 6 and refused to comply with the night’s lockdown. The violence sent four inmates to hospitals and left housing units damaged.

The labor union representing the guards says low staffing also contributed to the problem.

The Lerdo lockup North of Bakersfield is being improved and expanded and a new facility is expected to begin housing inmates by May.\

The BNSF Railway Company says most of the train cars were empty and the others were carrying wine when they came off the tracks Saturday near Tehachapi east of Bakersfield.

The derailment briefly shut down some lanes on rural State Route 58 but the debris was cleared after several hours.

KBAK-TV says the cause is under investigation.

USC Women’s Hoops Player: OR State Fans Used Racial Slurs CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) _ A Southern California

women’s basketball player says fans directed racial slurs at her and her black teammates as they left the court following a loss at Oregon State on Sunday night.

USC player Minyon Moore sent tweets about the derogatory remarks after the game, though she quickly deleted them.

Both schools say they are investigating. ``There is no place at Oregon State University _ nor do we believe in intercollegiate athletics _ for racially derogatory actions or statements that are directed at student-athletes, coaches, officials or fans in attendance,’’ Oregon State spokesman Steve Clark said in a statement to The Associated Press on Sunday night.

Clark said that Oregon State was in contact with USC officials and ``have communicated our efforts to investigate this matter immediately.’’ ``Both schools strongly agree that there is no place for such racially insensitive language in sports,’’ USC senior woman administrator Donna Heinel said in a statement provided to the AP. ``And we appreciate Oregon State and the Pac-12’s immediate dedication to investigating this incident and their efforts to ensure that our collective values of respect and inclusion are upheld.’’

Oregon State won 69-63.

Woman Burned as Gas is Pumped into Garbage Can in Her Backseat

MOSES LAKE, Wash. (AP) _ Authorities say a Washington woman suffered severe burns after gasoline fumes ignited when gas was being pumped into a garbage can in a car’s backseat.

KOMO-TV reports the Grant County Sheriff’s Office says the woman, who was a passenger early Saturday morning at a Cascade Valley Grocery convenience store, was smoking a cigarette, which ignited the flames.

Deputies later found a large amount of marijuana in the car’s trunk.

A bystander took the woman to Samaritan Healthcare in Moses Lake.

The male driver who was pumping the gas ran away.

The movie “Black Panther” has become a worldwide phenomenon. It has now grossed more money than the hit movie “Titanic.” “Black Panther” has now grossed over $1.3 billion worldwide and is the highest-grossing film of 2018. The movie is also now the third-highest-grossing film ever in the United States and the10th-highest-grossing film of all time.

Boseman graduated from Howard University and attended the British American Dramatic Academy at Oxford. Boseman can currently be seen starring as T’Challa/Black Panther in Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther” and “Avengers: Infinity War.” He made his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the African superhero in Marvel Studios’ “Captain America: Civil War,” in May 2016. Boseman’s breakout performance came in 2013 when he received rave reviews for his portrayal of the legendary Jackie Robinson in Warner Bros’ “42” opposite Harrison Ford. He also portrayed James Brown in Universal Pictures’ “Get on Up.”

Jazz Fest Remembers Fats Domino

By REBECCA SANTANA Associated Press NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Fats Domino was a New Orleans musical legend when he died last year so it’s only fitting that his death - and his music - receive a special send-off this year during the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.

Organizers on Saturday marked the occasion with a jazz funeral as well as a special tribute performance in his honor.

Al `Lil Fats’ Jackson played the classic Domino song “Blueberry Hill’’ as crowds gathered Saturday at the festival’s ancestor area to remember Domino, who died last year.

The festival unveiled a painting of Domino sitting at his piano to join the other paintings of luminaries associated with the festival who have passed away.

One of Domino’s grandchildren, Angele Green, thanked the crowd for coming.

“In the words of my grandfather, let’s shake, rattle and roll,’’ she said.

Domino sold more than 110 million records, with hits including “Blueberry Hill,’’ “Ain’t That a Shame’’ and other standards of rock ‘n’ roll.

The rock ‘n’ roll pioneer helped change popular music with his steady, pounding piano and easy baritone. Despite his fame, he always stayed loyal to New Orleans. After 2005’s Hurricane Katrina as floodwaters swept the city, he and his family were res-

cued by boat from his home but he lost three pianos and dozens of gold and platinum records and other memorabilia.

“There are two New Orleans musicians ... that changed the music of the whole world. That’s Louis Armstrong and Fats Domino,’’ said festival producer Quint Davis speaking before the festival, who said he had a “wonderful time’’ going back and listening to Domino’s music to prepare for the festival.

Carolyn Stark of Ann Arbor, Mich. was part of the crowd.

She said she’d only seen Domino perform once but wanted to pay her respects.

“He was so happy when he was playing,’’ she said, adding that the image had stuck in her memory.

Eather Reynolds of New Orleans said she often drives by the house where Domino lived for a long time in the city’s Lower 9th Ward neighborhood. She grew up listening to his music that she described as part gospel and part jazz.

“But you could feel it in your soul,’’ she said.

The tribute concert Saturday features various members of Domino’s band who are still playing, as well as special musical guests like Bonnie Raitt and Jon Batiste.

The jazz funeral featured the Tornado Brass Band as well as three of the city’s social aid and pleasure clubs. Domino is also featured on this year’s festival poster. “He’s with us everywhere,’’ said Davis.

Gov Candidate Steps Back into Politics Years After School is Named After Her

By McKenzie Jackson California Black Media mckenzie@cablackmedia.org Some time ago, a quizzical third grade student posed a curious query to Delaine Eastin. The grade schooler asked Eastin why she was named after the school he attended, the Bay Area’s Delaine Eastin Elementary School.

However, the proper question should have been why the 17-year-old school building is named after Eastin. The answer isn’t complicated. Eastin, 70, a college professor and member of the Union City City Council from 1980 to 1986, a state assemblyperson from 1986 to 1994 and the state superintendent of public instruction from 1995 to 2003 has been an education advocate all her life.

Eastin, one of nine women elected to statewide office in California history, said her education efforts in Union City helped reduce school truancy, daytime crime, and increase high school graduation rates.

“The reality is the school was named after me because I worked to bring the city and the school district together,” Eastin said adding having a school share her name is “the biggest, most wonderful tribute that I have ever received in my life.”

Now, Eastin is seeking to top that. The Democrat is vying to not only become the Golden State’s next governor, but also the first ever women to serve in the state’s top legislative position. She is one of several candidates jockeying to replace outgoing Gov. Jerry Brown in Sacramento.

Eastin is often overlooked in the polls but heading into the June 5 primary election the Bay Area native announced she will touch down in all 58 California counties to campaign and challenged all gubernatorial candidates to pledge they will fight for pay equity between genders and races if elected to office.

Eastin is one of several potential governors that were interviewed by California Black Media.

During the interview, edited and condensed for clarity, the nominee for governor, said the goals of her governorship would be increasing education opportunities, building more affordable housing, promoting healthcare for all, and cleaning up the environment, during the interview, edited and condensed for clarity.

“I believe very strongly that elected officials should stand up for all the people in our state,” she said.

“I had left political life in 2003 but watched as the inequalities in our state grew and the middle class was shrinking. I’m

Crispy Fried Chicken

Nothing is better than a piece of hot, crispy, fried chicken. Especially when all those delicious herbs and spices marry together. One of the pleasures of chicken is that it can be eaten cold, or hot and at anytime of day or night!

Ingredients: Chicken drumsticks 4 cups flour 2- 2 1/2 tsp. salt 3 tsp. black pepper (evenly) 2- 1/2 tsp. poultry seasoning 1 tsp. tumeric ( optional) 1 tsp. paprika 1 tsp. celery salt 1 tsp. garlic powder 1 tsp. onion salt 1 tsp. Cayenne pepper dash of hot sauce (optional) 1 tsp. yellow or dijon mustard (optional) 1 cup water 2 eggs slightly beaten Directions: 1. Season drumsticks with one cup flour and everything else except salt, black pepper, paprika, hot sauce, mustard, and paprika (this will be used along with the egg mixture.

2. In a shallow bowl, mix eggs, water, salt, black pepper, hot sauce, mustard, and paprika together.

3. Dip drumsticks one at a time to the egg mixture once all chicken had been coated evenly with the egg batter, the place bag in flour bag and toss until every piece has been coated.

4. Using a skillet or fryer place, oil in at 375 degrees.

Once the oil is hot place chicken in one at a time, being careful not to turn over until it has cooked completely on one side. Turn pieces over and continue to cook until juices run clear.

really running for four major reasons. First, I believe education is the cornerstone of any successful society. It’s the best crime prevention program. It’s the best economic development program.

It’s the game-changer for so many of us. I think we need more paid paternity and maternity leave. We need more child development. We need pre-school for all. We need to make kindergarten full day. We need to make it mandatory. We need to invest more in K-12 education reform. We are 41st in the 50 states in what we are spending per child. We used to be fifth, tied with New York.

New York now spends more than twice per much per student then California. We need to make college tuition free again and build some additional campuses, so we don’t turn away 67,000 students at CSU as we did last year. On all levels, from pre-school to grad school we must invest in education in a much better way.

Housing is a huge problem in California. We have been building something like 80,000 units a year when we should have been building 180,000. Meaning we have the largest number in percentage of homeless of any state at 22 percent. Beyond that, we need to build affordable housing near transportation hubs all over California. Many times, you have a couple and one goes north; one goes south; one goes east; one goes west. They don’t go to the same place. If you build affordable housing next to the transportation hub at least you can avoid getting in your car and contributing to the pollution.

Third, healthcare for all. Healthcare should be a right, not a privilege for the wealthy. Every single person in this state needs an opportunity to have healthcare. Last, I’m a huge supporter of clean air and water for everyone. Right now, some of our poorest neighborhoods are the neighborhoods where the children are least likely to have good water and the air quality is most likely to be poor. I’m committed to fracking as well as identifying new and better ways to commute, get people around as well as better ways to help people have an environment to grow and prosper.”

Is their one position you have held that has prepared you to be governor?

“I’ve grown in every position I have had. City council made me better in the assembly. The assembly made me a better superintendent. As superintendent is the area where I learned the most.

That contributes to me being a better governor. I administered to over 40 percent of the California budget. It’s not an insignificant role, and the truth is I really believe transformed the department.

The culture of the department changed, people were on a mission and they hadn’t been. People were encouraged to collaborate and to figure out how we can do better. We diversified the department. We brought in a very diverse group of leadership. When I got to the department it was pretty white and the leadership was pretty male. I went out and used the ability to use Visiting Educator Program – you can take someone from a school district and pay them their school district salary to their district and they can work in Sacramento – doing that I was able to bring in some very talented African Americans, Latinos, Asian Americans, and have much more diverse department. I intend to do that across California.

Why is diversity in government important?

“We are a diverse state. The state government should look like the state. We should give children a chance to see role models that are them and have an understanding that the government is a place of equal opportunity and there is more potential for leadership for people who are from very diverse backgrounds.”

Why should Black voters consider you as their candidate?

“All my life I have fought for equal rights and justice in our society. I came out of Union City Council; it is a majority minority community. I went to the assembly and I fought for equal rights, social justice and better opportunities for all people. When I got to the assembly, I worked very hard to get appointed to the education committee. Eventually, I got to chair that committee.

I feel very certain my leadership at the department was especially important because I opposed Prop 187, Prop 209 and Prop 227.

They all passed, but I sued Gov. Pete Wilson. I joined the lawsuit against 187 and we won the lawsuit, so it was overturned we didn’t have to make the teachers become immigration officers. I’m proud to say 227 has now been overturned by the voters. I stand

up for what I believe even when it’s not fashionable. I believe that black lives do matter. I believe very strongly that elected officials should stand up for all the people in our state.”

What type of relationship would you strive to have with the federal government?

“I will stand with the people of California, and I will not allow a thug in the White House to push us around. The concept that a racist, misogynist is President is very disturbing to me. I will not {inaudible] for him. We will stand together as Californians on behalf of the future of our state and the rights of our people. We will not be pushed around by the federal government.”

How would #MeToo movement effect your governorship?

“I believe very strongly in equal rights for all. There is discrimination based on race, but there is even more discrimination when you combine race and gender. The reality is African American women are far more discriminated against then African American men. What we have a chance to do is say we are going to fight for all of California, irrespective of their gender or race.

Everybody has a wonderful future because we are going to say the priority in California is the rights of the people who live here.

I am going to work to get rid of the pay inequity. You must have pay equity. It discriminates against families when women make less than men. If we are doing the same work. We must make sure we reach a sense of justice in California for all people.”

How would you address housing problems?

“We will have a full court press endeavor to build 300,000 units a year for the first few years. You can’t do more than that because you don’t have enough plumbers and carpenters and roofers. We would use a variety of different means to stimulate the housing. The state would provide incentives to communities to build affordable housing. I believe in the California Environmental Quality Act. It has become ossified. It takes too long to get things approved. We have got to work to streamline the approval process. When we do that we will see there are lot of nimble people that are eager to do this.

Another thing I would change is the commercial/industrial property tax. Because of Prop 13, commercial/industrial properties, many of them don’t modernize because they have these very low tax rates like 1978 tax rates. So, you wind up with situations like the Ghost Ship Fire in Oakland where a bunch of people died because the guy didn’t want to be reassessed, so he didn’t change the outside of the building he just turned the inside into apartments. That was illegal, but no one knew he did it and as a result 23 people died. Commercial/industrial properties must be assessed every ten years or so. Prop 13 was supposedly done to help homeowners. Homeowners were paying like 52 percent of the property taxes when Prop 13 passed now they are paying 72 percent now it may be as high as 74 percent. We need to get more commercial and industrial property tax into the system. With that money we can do a lot of things different and better.”
