R TconWith over 50,000 federal employees, the fourth HIS gressional district in Maryland represents the fifth largest number of workers, and Maryland likely counts as the third-largest impacted state by the government shutdown, according to Democratic Rep. Anthony Brown. “So, I’m hearing about this, like my colleagues, each and every day from my constituents while this shutdown is set to become the longest in the nation’s history,” said Brown, who joined Congressional Black Caucus Chair Karen Bass (D-Calif.); Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), and Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.), on a media conference call on Friday, Jan. 11. The CBC members said they were calling for an end to the shutdown so that workers can again begin to collect their paychecks and critical government services can resume. During the call, the members discussed the debilitating effects of the ongoing government shutdown as thousands of federal employees are unable to collect their paychecks. They also denounced President Donald Trump’s threat to declare a state of emergency if Congress refuses to fund a border wall – one in which the president claimed during his campaign that Mexico would pay for. “This shutdown and the whole issue of the wall is a fake crisis,” Bass said. “At the end of the day, even if he had all the money, it would still take eminent domain to build his wall. That process will take years. This is further evidence that this is a fake crisis and, in my opinion, just an attempt to change our attention away from the numerous impending investigations,” she said. Thompson, the chair of the Homeland Security Committee, said the shutdown is taking its toll on workers and government operations. “It is a challenge for us in Homeland Security. We have 80 percent of the workforce not being paid. That goes from TSA employees in airports, to the Coast Guard, to the Secret Service, to Custom Border Protection individuals, and all of those individuals who have sworn to keep us safe, are not being paid,” Thompson said.

By Charlene Crowell NNPA Newswire Contributor Once again on the third Monday in January, much of the nation will mark the anniversary of the death of the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Countless programs and events will no doubt recall several of his famous speeches from the 1963 March on Washington’s “I Have A Dream to his “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” delivered in Memphis during the 1968 sanitation workers’ strike. In a life of only 39 years, Dr. King captured global attention in his valiant, nonviolent fight for the values of freedom, justice and equality. Preaching and fighting for long overdue citizenship rights first promised to all in the Declaration of Independence, he championed economic justice – especially for Blacks to have safe, decent, and affordable housing. He also called for full participation in the economy, and an end to financial exploitation. Now 51 years since his assassination, his words still strike a resonant chord. His words — written as prose but markedly poetic — remain as timely as they are timeless. “There are so many problems facing our nation and our world, that one could just take off anywhere,” Dr. King said in a speech delivered on April 14, 1967 at Stanford University. Entitled, “The Other America” Dr. King began by Martin Luther King Jr. (Photo by Ted Williams/Iconic Images/ Getty Images) recapping the nation’s bounty and beauty, noting how “America is overflowing with the milk of prosperity and but far removed from the commonplace privilege associat- income and a good solid job. Bullied Girl is a Messenger of Hope By LEANNE ITALIE Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) – Kheris Rogers was in the first grade in a predominantly white private school in Los Angeles when she felt the bite of racism among her peers _ she was being bullied because of her dark skin. She tearfully kept it to herself, eventually turning to her older sister, Taylor Pollard, and switching to a more diverse school, where colorism among fellow African-American students surprised and confused her. With her young sister's self-esteem bruised, Pollard inadvertently launched Kheris to social media fame in 2017 when she posted a photo of the girl on Twitter dressed up for a fashion show, using their beloved grandmother's down-home words for a hashtag: “Flexininhercomplexion.” Soon, Kheris had her own Twitter and Instagram accounts ((at)KherisPoppin) and was posting photo shoots of herself that she and Pollard created. Her own fashion line followed, with T-shirts sporting her tagline, “Flexin' in My Complexion ,” along with backpacks reading “The Miseducation of Melanin” and other apparel and accessories. Lupita Nyong'o posted a photo of herself wearing a black version of the shirt with bright yellow letters in support of Kheris. Whoopi Goldberg sported one while attending the Rodarte show at New York Fashion Week in September. Alicia Keys lauded her black girl magic. While the words of her tormenters no longer sting, they haven't been forgotten. The behavior wasn’t restricted to children, either. “The kids would always call me names,” Kheris, now 12, told The Associated Press in a recent interview. “They would always tease me for my dark-skin complexion. They used to call me dead roach and say I've been in the oven too long. When I really knew I was being bullied because of my color was when my teacher handed me a black crayon instead of a brown crayon to draw our portraits for parent conferences.” Pollard, who at 24 is now Kheris' manager, suspected

something was amiss and Kheris finally told her family. “I had no friends. I was only invited to one of the birthday parties that they had. Everybody else was invited and I wasn’t,” Kheris recalled. Now in middle school, things are more than just a little looking up. Kheris was chosen as one of Teen Vogue's “21 Under 21” inspiring girls and femmes of 2018 and attended the magazine's teen summit. She was picked by LeBron James as one of 16 people to help mark his 16th shoe release with Nike, modeling in ads for the company. She's been featured in a spread in Essence magazine and walked the runway of “America's Next Top Model” after Tyra Banks learned of her plight. She has shown her own line in Harlem during New York Fashion Week, and she hasn't hit the eighth grade yet. Julee Wilson, fashion and beauty director for Essence magazine, called support for Kheris “both an honor and responsibility.” She added: “To stand in the face of society's narrow beauty standards isn't an easy task, and she's doing it with an incredible amount of grace. We can't wait to see how Kheris pushes the `Flexin' in My Complexion movement forward in the future. There's no doubt in our minds that she'll continue to remind the world that Black is incredibly beautiful.” Mom Erika Pollard, a social worker, said Kheris travels the country speaking at conferences about empowerment. “As a parent, of course, you know, it was heartbreaking, but it made us stronger,” she said of the rough years. “It pulled us together as a family because it's something that we had to conquer together. Now she's making a positive difference within her community, which I'm so proud of at such a young age.”

Kheris said she now considers her life a mission. “Flexin' in My Complexion isn't just about me,” she said. “It's about every brown, dark, freckled, fair-skinned person who wants to tell the world, `I am more than just the color of skin.”' She hopes to spread her message across the world. “I want to be a spokesperson for racism and colorism (issues),” she said. Kheris now has lots of friends as a seventh-grader and knows exactly how to handle bullies: “Back off because I'm flexin' in my complexion and it doesn't matter what you think about me. It matters what I think about myself.”

Hall, Lewis, Layne, Stenberg are Essence Honorees

NEW YORK (AP) – ESSENCE has named four actresses as its annual “Black Women in Hollywood” honorees. They are Regina Hall of “If Beale Street Could Talk” and “The Hate U Give,” Amandla Stenberg of “The Hate U Give,” Kiki Layne of “If Beale Street Could Talk” and Jenifer Lewis of “Black-ish.” The awards luncheon will be held Feb. 21 in Beverly Hills, California. In a statement, ESSENCE salutes “the marvelous work and stunning achievements” of the four. Chief creative and content officer MoAna Luu also notes that they represent “the dynamic intersection of art and activism that is influencing how we shape our own destiny.” King recently drew praise for her Golden Globes speech in which she pledged to employ women as 50 percent of her staff in any upcoming projects in the next two years.

Probe of Threats Against Black Legislator

BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) – The Vermont attorney general’s office is releasing findings in its investigation of alleged crimes against former state Rep. Kiah Morris, who resigned after receiving racial threats. Morris became Vermont’s first black female legislator in 2014. But racist threats and harassment followed until she quit last year. She says she and her family have endured a home invasion, vandalism and saw swastikas painted on trees nearby. A group of youths also pounded on her windows and doors at night, forcing her and her husband, convalescing after heart surgery, to leave town. Morris said she was dissatisfied with the response by Bennington police. The police chief has defended his department. The attorney general announced in September that his office would take over the investigation. He’s releasing the findings on Monday.

Dying Woman Seeks Caregiver for Beloved Plant LANCASTER, Pa. (AP) – A Pennsylvania woman who’s dying of cancer is trying to find a home for her beloved 15-foot-long plant. LNP reports Gabrellen Pfarr has a few months to live after deciding not to pursue further treatment for cancer. Now, the 83-year-old wants to find a caring home for the sprawling plant she’s been nurturing for 10 years in her Lancaster apartment. She says her husband will move in with family members after she dies, and they don’t have enough room or natural light to take on the plant. Pfarr is a retired art teacher who says she doesn’t have a green thumb but the plant she describes as a philodendron has thrived nonetheless. She says “it’s a beautiful plant” and wants it “to go to someone who can continue to take care of it.”
