New Year’s Champagne Scrub
Happy New Year! If you have any sparkling wine
or champagne left after a night of celebrating, you can whip up this simple allover body scrub. It will cleanse and refresh your skin, leaving it super soft. Fresh citrus zest gives the scrub an energizing scent. Don’t worry if the champagne is a bit flat, that won’t spoil a thing.
1 tablespoon coconut oil 1 cup raw sugar ¼ cup champagne 1 teaspoon fresh citrus zest (orange or lemon)
In a small bowl, mix together all ingredients. To use: Stand in the tub or shower on a towel as the oil could make things slippery. Massage the body scrub into damp skin. Rinse well with warm water and pat your skin dry. Yield: 8 ounces
Gift Note: For gift giving, mix up the sugar, oil, and citrus zest and package in a small jar. Include a small bottle of champagne (those single serving ones are super cute) with a note to pop the cork and treat yourself well in the New Year—“It is your year to GLOW.”
Lady Godiva was the wife of Earl Leofric
of Mercia. As legend has it, she asked her husband to reduce the taxes for the people of Coventry. He agreed, but only if she would ride naked through the town. She asked the townspeople to remain indoors, and she rode covered only by her long hair. To prepare for her famous ride, I suspect she gave herself an allover body scrub like this one so her fleeting figure had a noble glow. Mix together all the ingredients into a smooth cream.
Lady Godiva Body Scrub ¼ cup granulated sugar 2 tablespoons light oil such as almond, olive, or sunflower oil 2 tablespoons fresh whole milk or almond milk
To use: Before bathing, gently massage the mixture all over your body to increase circulation and remove dry, flaky skin. Rinse your skin with warm water and moisturize well with more oil or a rich body cream. Yield: 4 ounces, about enough for 1 whole body treatment
New Year New YOU New Year’s is a time of resolutions, and one of the most popular ones is to exercise more and be healthy. (I know, I make it myself each year.) Give that special friend or loved one a sign of support by creating a simple healthy lifestyle gift. Put together a few items that can be used as a reward after an especially tough day or can be used as motivation. Suggested items to include: 3 Energizing soaps and shower gels
3 Sweet Orange Yoga Spray (page 61)
3 Weekend Warrior Massage Oil (page 250)
3 Foot Powder (page 199)
3 Sports socks
3 Energy Bars
3 Reusable Water Bottle
Reuse a sports shoebox or small gym bag as your container and fill it with active, healthy items. Make sure you use plastic non-breakable containers for shower items. Clip pictures and quotes from magazines and paste the collection onto cardstock as a motivational “vision board” for the year ahead.

Pine nuts, which are high in fat, grow on pine or piñon trees and are found inside the pine cone. These smooth, soft, white nuts make an excellent skin-softening scrub that can be used all over your body and is gentle enough for sensitive skin. In a blender or food processor, place the pine nuts and oil or water, and process until finely ground. To use: Use the grainy mixture to cleanse your skin. Store any leftover scrub in the refrigerator.
Pine Nut Scrub ½ cup pine nuts 2 tablespoons light oil such as almond, sunflower, or light olive oil (for normal or dry skin types) Or 2 tablespoons distilled water (for oily skin types)
Yield: 4 ounces, enough for 1 whole body treatment
