CHAPTER 2 So Where Do You Start? You Have Too Much Crap!
Consumer Nation: Buying Everything in Sight Doesn’t Equal Happiness
When you are thinking about living a more mobile lifestyle or even contemplating simplifying your life, I think you need a solid starting point. As I preach in my other books— it is always better to have a plan and to take it slow in the beginning. Many people, caught up in our society’s instantgratification thought process, forget that great things come with time and perseverance.
Just like most people today, I had spent my life being just what society and the system wanted me to be: the ultimate consumer. It is no secret that our lives suffer under maximum workloads in order to make money so that we can buy as much as we can to fill the unhappiness void. Now, I’m not saying there is no value in work, and I don’t begrudge working hard and earning an honest wage, but I do think we have our priorities way out of whack today.
As you now know, my off-the-grid life and journey of simplification started several years ago when I decided to downsize. After owning several homes that were much bigger than I needed and filled with crap that I would never use, I decided it was time for a change. The bottom line is, if you are truly interested in this type of lifestyle, you are going to have to downsize ... and for most of you, you’ll have to downsize big time! Don’t be one of those people with a convoy of moving trucks moving all your crap from the city to the country. If you haven’t figured out my philosophy of living off the grid, it is not to just relocate, but to live a simpler life. You can’t do that with a ton of junk weighing you down. 16
Why do we purchase the biggest house we can obtain and shackle ourselves to its suffocating loan? Why do we buy that sports car we really can’t afford? Why do we have a closet full of clothes and shoes we hardly wear? In the end, we stress ourselves out so we can obtain all these items, and for what? Exactly! You can’t answer that question because there is no logical or reasonable answer. To me, the answer is simple. We do all the above, and drive ourselves crazy in the process, because that is what we have been told to do in order to find happiness. So, in today’s society, stuff equals happiness. Trust me, I followed this mantra with gusto, purchasing all kinds of junk I didn’t need. 17
