In 2015, a dream came to life. OFYR, now a globally recognized brand in outdoor cooking, was born from the vision of Hans Goossens, a passionate entrepreneur who wanted more than just a cooking appliance. The story started small, but quickly grew into a symbol of togetherness, creativity, and craftsmanship.

Design and functionality in perfect harmony

What makes OFYR so unique is the combination of design and functionality. The round, sculptural shape makes the device not only an eye-catcher in any garden but also an invitation to cook together. "The open circle symbolizes connection. Anyone can join, whether you're an experienced chef or not," Hans explains. The design is durable, robust, and practical. "What sets us apart is that with OFYR, you can do so much more than just barbecue - it invites you to experiment," says Hans.

Hans began his journey with a clear mission: to create a product that did more than just cook. “With OFYR, we wanted to connect people. It’s not just about food, but the experience around it,” Hans explains. His personal passion for connection and togetherness laid the foundation for his idea. “I didn’t want to design just another product; I wanted to create something that fostered an experience, a shared moment,” he says. For Hans, it felt like the right time to make his idea a reality, and his determination to combine traditional outdoor cooking culture with modern design led to the birth of OFYR.

From

idea to success

It all started with an idea: a fire pit that combines cooking and togetherness. During the “Spirit of Winter” event in the gardens of Paleis Het Loo (The Netherlands), the first OFYR was presented. “We stood there with the OFYR cooking unit, hoping people would understand the concept,” Hans recalls. The reactions were overwhelming. Visitors were captivated by the simplicity and impact of the design. This moment marked the first step toward OFYR’s international growth.

Hans shares: “Collaborating with the right partners was crucial in strengthening our network. With their help, we could quickly expand our concept internationally, which was very special for us. It gave me the confidence to continue developing OFYR into what it is today.”

"Fire has always brought people together," Hans continues. " We wanted to capture that in our design. It's not just functional; it creates an intimate, warm atmosphere that draws people in."

A global brand with a clear mission

In less than ten years, OFYR has grown into a beloved brand worldwide. From the Netherlands to Australia, the fire pits bring people together all over the world. "It's incredible to see how people around the world feel the same connection to OFYR," Hans says proudly.

The brand is now found in restaurants, hotels, gardens and at events.

However, Hans emphasizes that OFYR’s success is more than just commercial achievement. Sustainability plays a central role in everything the brand does. “We strive to create a product that is not only beautiful but also durable and has minimal environmental impact,” he explains. The use of certified wood and materials designed to withstand the test of time is just one example of how sustainability is woven into the brand.

A personal journey: passion knows no age

The story of OFYR is also a personal journey for Hans. At the age of 58, he decided to follow his dream and embark on a new adventure. “It was a leap of faith, but I knew I had to do it. There was no hesitation, only passion and the belief that it would work,” says Hans. Starting OFYR was not just a business decision for him; it was also an opportunity to grow personally. His children noticed how he had changed since starting OFYR. “They said, ‘Dad, you’re glowing! You have so much more energy!’” Hans shares with a smile. Entrepreneurship has not only helped him professionally but has also allowed him to grow personally.

What inspires Hans most are the stories of his customers. "There's nothing more beautiful than a customer telling me how OFYR has changed not

only their garden but their way of being together," he says. One memorable moment was when a restaurant owner told Hans that the fire of OFYR had brought a new dynamic: “Guests felt instantly more connected.”

The future: innovating without losing the core

Hans continues to dream and innovate. “We have so many ideas we still want to bring to life. The possibilities are endless, from new models to innovations that further enrich the experience around the fire,” he says excitedly. Yet, the essence of OFYR remains unchanged: it’s all about connection. “The fire never goes out, both literally and figuratively. We always want to push further, but the mission remains the same: connecting people.”

Hans is proud of what OFYR has achieved so far, but he is convinced there is always room to grow.

“The beautiful thing is that there’s always room for innovation. The core of OFYR is connecting people, and that will always be the driving force.”

As a food stylist, art director, and passionate advocate for cooking with pure ingredients, Sofie embodies the future of outdoor cooking in a way that is both feminine and green.

From passion to vision: the foundation of Sofie’s culinary philosophy

Sofie’s love for food began with its visual aspect. “I’ve always been fascinated by the visual aspect of food,” she explains. “Food is not just taste; it’s a story, it’s art. How you present a dish can stimulate the senses and complete the experience.” For Sofie, food styling is more than just arranging ingredients on a plate; it’s an opportunity to express her creativity and share her love for cooking in a completely different way.

And that passion is clearly reflected in her culinary philosophy. “My focus is on healthy and pure ingredients. I believe that a good dish starts with the best products,” she says. “I prefer to work with fresh, seasonal ingredients and love experimenting with different flavours and cuisines.”

According to Sofie, outdoor cooking is all about the atmosphere. “Outdoor cooking offers a sense of freedom and adventure. It’s different from cooking indoors, where you’re often confined to certain techniques or tools,” she explains. “The scents of the open fire, the fresh air, and the use of simple, authentic techniques make it so much more than just preparing a meal.”

Sofie sees the future of outdoor cooking as a dynamic blend of tradition and innovation. “More than ever, people are seeking a connection with nature, and outdoor cooking offers that. At the same time, technology will help make it easier and more enjoyable,” she predicts. “I believe that outdoor cooking will become a significant social activity, where people come together to cook purely, authentically, and consciously.”

For Sofie, OFYR is the ideal tool to bring her vision to life. The open design and versatility of OFYR make it possible to prepare ingredients in a natural, pure way. “With OFYR, I can truly highlight the flavours of vegetables,” she says enthusiastically. “For example, I grill peppers and zucchinis directly on the hot plate. It gives them a delicious smoky flavour while keeping their crispness. For other vegetables, like eggplant, I slow-cook them on the side of the plate.”

Sofie uses minimal seasoning: a bit of olive oil, sea salt, and fresh herbs. “This way, the pure flavours really come through,” she explains.

What inspires her the most when working with OFYR is the combination of simplicity and versatility. “The open fire takes me back to the basics of cooking. But OFYR also lets me experiment with new techniques and dishes. Its versatility challenges me to try something new every time.”

In addition to her work as a cook and food stylist, Sofie also plays a key role as an art director in OFYR photoshoots. Her task is to bring the brand’s vision to life visually. “OFYR’s iconic design is not only functional but also an aesthetic statement,” she explains. “In photoshoots, I focus of course on the dishes but also on the experience that OFYR creates. It’s about capturing the warmth, the togetherness, and the natural beauty of cooking outdoors.”

Sofie is very aware of the role the open fire plays in the outdoor cooking experience. “The fire brings something special to the table,” she says. “It symbolizes connection, both with nature and with the people around you. During photoshoots, I try to capture that interaction. It’s important that the image doesn’t only show the dishes but also the atmosphere of being together.”

In her food styling, everything revolves around texture, colour, and the harmony between the different ingredients. “I want to show how flavours and colours come together on the cooking plate or on the dishes,” Sofie says. “It’s not just visually appealing but also a reflection of the warmth and social aspect of outdoor cooking.”

Women in the world of outdoor cooking

“Women have always played an important role in cooking over an open fire,” she explains. “In many cultures, it’s women who have mastered outdoor cooking, although they are often less visible than their male counterparts.”

However, Sofie sees a shift in the culinary world. “More and more women are coming into the spotlight as leaders in outdoor cooking. They are showing that women can not only cook but also do it in their own authentic way. It’s a time of change.”

Her message for other women who want to follow their passion for outdoor cooking is clear: “Don’t be held back by the idea that outdoor cooking is only for men. The beauty of outdoor cooking is that there are no rules - it’s about fun, creativity, and connection with nature. Trust your instincts, keep learning, and be proud of what you do. Show that women can shine just as brightly - if not brighter - in the world of outdoor cooking.”

Chefs become friends and friends become chefs

If there’s one person who truly represents OFYR, it’s Guy Weyts. What started as a chance encounter turned into a passion and a way of life. In this interview, Guy shares how he first discovered OFYR, how he helped establish the brand in Belgium, and why outdoor cooking is about so much more than just preparing food.

A meeting that changed everything

About ten years ago, Hans Goosens asked Guy if he wanted to promote OFYR in Belgium. At the time, Guy wasn’t sure. He had just sold his restaurant, was dealing with health issues, and didn’t feel ready for a new adventure.

Still, he decided to give it a shot. Hans handed him an OFYR Classic 100 and simply said, “Just try it.”

As a chef and creative mind, Guy couldn’t say no.

He invited some chef friends over and lit the fire.

“Before we knew it, the four of us were gathered around, cooking together and shared our thoughts. It immediately felt special.”

He started bringing the OFYR to catering jobs.

Even though he had always used a kamado, he found himself drawn to OFYR more and more. “As a chef, you’re always experimenting. Ideas turn into concepts, and then you see the excitement in people’s eyes. They come closer, share their experiences, and something amazing happens.”

From passion to business

It wasn’t long before Guy saw the business potential. “The first OFYR I sold was through a friend. From that moment, I knew: this is something big.”

He and Erik teamed up to start selling the units. With their combined networks, they had a strong foundation.

But Guy wanted to do more than just sell OFYRshe wanted to show what was possible. That’s how he and Erik came up with the idea for a cookbook. “We had an amazing team, and the enthusiasm was huge. In the end, we created a beautiful cookbookand that was just the beginning.”

His catering business kept growing, and his schedule became packed. “At some point, I had to start saying no to requests because I was doublebooked. That felt like a missed opportunity.” So, he started looking for ways to expand. This eventually led to the launch of Stoke, a concept where he combined sales, workshops, and live cooking demos.

The unique flavour and experience of OFYR

What makes OFYR so special compared to other outdoor cooking setups? For Guy, the answer is simple: the taste and the experience. “The fire gives food a subtle smoky flavour without overpowering it. Everything cooks slowly, and you have full control. Plus, because it’s open, you’re always interacting with the food.”

OFYR also changed the way he thinks about cooking. “I’ve realized you don’t need anything else. You can cook everything on an OFYR.”

His favourite dishes to prepare on the OFYR? The simple ones that surprise people. “Grilled avocado, chicory with coffee, mussels, or celeriac - so easy, yet so special.”

Teaming up with Mario from BBQ Bros

One of the biggest collaborations in his career has been with Mario from BBQ Bros. They met five years ago through the World Barbecue Association and kept in touch via Instagram and WhatsApp. “Mario thinks big - he sees the whole picture. When we met again in Spain, we started making real plans.”

Their partnership led to exciting projects like Marriott Marquis Dubai, where they host luxury events with OFYR, and Terra Solis, Tomorrowland’s permanent location in Dubai. “That’s where you really see the magic. People walk in, see the flames, smell the food, and they’re instantly hooked.”

The power of collaboration

Guy firmly believes that success isn’t about ego - it’s about teamwork. “A lot of chefs think their way is the only way, but I love learning from others.” That’s what makes his partnership with Mario so strong. “We complement each other perfectly. I bring my culinary experience, and Mario has a big passion and a great strategic vision. We push each other, but we also trust each other completely.”

And that trust is key, especially in a world where creativity and innovation go hand in hand. “We talked about it recently: what we do together, we wouldn’t be able to do alone. That’s what makes it special.”

The future of OFYR

For Guy, OFYR is far from reaching its peak. “The brand keeps growing and evolving. It’s still the gold standard in outdoor cooking, and I don’t see anyone coming close.”

He’s proud of what he’s built with OFYR and is excited for new challenges ahead. “As long as I feel connected to a brand, I’ll keep believing in it. And with OFYR, I feel everything.”
