G. Charbonneau (SOCAN)

So many cars passing by me on the highway So many clouds floating freely in the sky Deep in my soul there’s a war that’s slowly raging Deep in my heart there’s a part about to die

You were so smooth, you were so warm You fit perfectly into my palm You were so useful did so many things Such beautiful features, such interesting rings I liked you best opened not shut I liked you best all charged up

The road may be long and the road may be lonely The empty seat beside me’s occupied with dreams of you In my dreams we are dancing, we are rolling in the ocean But the highway is calling and my dreams can’t change the truth

I lost my heart, I lost my home What will become of me without my phone Oh what a horrible life line to lose I’ve got the lost cell phone blues

You gave me a rhythm and a ribbon and some roses You gave me a window with a view across the sea I gave you a bucket and a pocket and a pillow I gave you a locket with a sacred silver key The sun is sinking on the western horizon The road dips and flows on the open ocean side All that divides us is wider than the ocean I’m finished with swimming ‘cause I can’t beat the tide Every bend before me is revealing how I feel Every mile behind me sees the easing of my grief You lost the key and you wouldn’t take the wheel So the highway is calling and the road brings bittersweet relief

Yesterday dear was a sad day for me You slipped out of my pocket and into the sea And I watched you sink down, down into the deep With contacts you carry, and photos you keep

Without my phone I don’t know the time I don’t have a calendar to keep me in line All day today I’d reach for you dear Sighing and crying and wanting you here Got to distract myself, stay occupied Can’t check the weather without going outside I can’t make a call, I cannot connect I can’t take a selfie, I can’t send a text So I go outside, start noticing things I hadn’t realised that it was spring The birds are all chirping, there’s flowers in bloom I go for a walk, start humming a tune Starts as a hum, turns into a song It’s not from a program, been there all along I have my heart, I have my home Life can be worth living without a phone Oh now I know there’s so much more I’ll sing my new song all the way to the cell phone store

L. Carleton/J. Wigmore (SOCAN) My breath down deep in the forest My breath down deep in the snow My body takes to the water and I Can’t break the longing for cold My love, oh love is leaving My love, oh love take my hand My body takes to the water and I Can’t break the longing for the cold The path down deep is crooked But the path down deep is worn I wait for cold streams of water and I Can’t break the longing for the cold The light, the light draws nearer The light, the light guide me home My heart beats loud, wild abandon and I Can’t break the longing for the… water Oh my darlin’, oh my lover, why you leaving this way Oh my darlin’, oh my lover, always throwing love away My breath down deep in the shallows And then my breath down deep on the shore The sparks jump high cross that starry sky Can’t break the longing for the home. My love, oh love come near me My love, oh love take my hand The fire burns bright in your shining eyes Can’t break the longing for… water Oh my darlin’, oh my lover, why you leaving this way Oh my darlin’, oh my lover, always throwing love away Repeat first verse

G. Charbonneau (SOCAN) There’s a crack in the old kitchen window And a place where the stars might appear But you give me that look that’s like dying You can try but your holding me here And we can see the sun we can see the moon There is only we in this cold cocoon Pull the blinds down, hold my everything Take these offerings, clip these folded wings You could never be Everything to me And I’m a fool if I believe That that is what I need There’s a boat that’s afloat on the ocean And it’s manned by a capable crew In the water they see their reflection That the ripples begin to undo All these memories, all this history Stranded stowaways, fed on fallacy Tear the pages out, throw them overboard Watch them wash ashore, so much unexplored The little girls plays with her teacups And her table is all set for two The grandeur of imagination It’s the rainbows and sparkles of youth Every storybook, in her pretty head Fills her empty plates, see what she is fed How to recreate all the different way Possibilities, time to liberate

L. Carleton (SOCAN) Horse fly take a bite of my leg Brain still reeling from the life I escaped Pack making holes in my shoulder blades Dip in the lake makes it all fade away Sun-kissed, blackberry crisp Down on the river where I pray for more Back-40, fields of barley Feel the colour creeping into my soul, my soul I feel the colour creeping into my soul Rock as a fork, tent as a home Sleeping under stars with the mountains close Sun as an alarm clock, taking our time Feel like a queen in this paradise Tired bones with a heart bursting through Can’t hide love under an August moon With food in my belly, you by my side How can heaven compare to this sight Thrill of the paddle, lay of the land Whitewater junkies and we’ve got it bad My anchor with his sunnies in the stern of the boat He looks so fine and he don’t even know it

G. Charbonneau (SOCAN) It’s a long long line up at the local welfare office It’s a long long time we been countin on the union It’s a deep deep hole that we’ve gotten ourselves into Where’s the deep deep pockets when you really need them? Down Down Down Keep your head down, keep your back strong, keep your eyes clear Keep your feet on the ground ‘Cause you know they keep saying it’ll get better next year Oh, how we hope That this rain is going to keep us all afloat Oh, how we pray That the banks aren’t gonna take it all away The plastic in my pocket Well, the balance keeps on growing But the food upon the table it ain’t what it was before There are holes in the knees of the jeans of my children There are lines across my forehead that I ain’t seen before Oh, every day I wonder why there’s not another way There will be a time We can rise above the daily grind It’s a long, long way from here to the capital city It’s a long, long way to the suits on the upper floors And all of us below want answers to our questions All of us below are banging on those doors Oh, my back aches I don’t know how much longer I can take it Oh, my neck’s sore And I can’t keep my head down anymore

Lyrics - G. Charbonneau, melody from “Rano Rani” a Pirin folk song, learned from Iliana Bozhanova and Todor Yankov I set my questions on the line I cast into the bay- rolling ocean I feel the turning of the sky But answers always get away Oh the ripples that we make, will they find you? Pacify the oceans roar Oh the ripples we create, do they touch you? And wash your feet upon the shore There’s a universe in you There’s a galaxy in me, spinning madly The constellations that we share Are the greater mystery Oh the ripples that we make, will they find you? Despite we are so far apart Oh the ripples we create, do they touch you? And soothe the sorrow in your heart All these tears are falling stars Falling in the salty sea, water rising All these tears just blur our eyes Hide the possibilities Oh the ripples that we make, will they find you? A soft a watery embrace Oh the ripples we create, do they touch you? And wash the worry from your face

G. Charbonneau (SOCAN) Peace loving nation Ear to the heartbeat of the world A voice like honey And charm to catch the heart of girls But adoration was not enough he needed more And no one spoke of All that went on behind closed doors And a cold wind blows when the door’s thrown open Oh oh don’t you know That ship goes down when you throw your weight around Oh oh don’t you know There’s consequences Men in power Men of the book, men of the cloth Behind the pulpit Expounding virtues of their god They were but children Going down upon their knees Shame and confusion For this blessing they received But the sheep will cry when their eyes fly open And all the people stuck in silence Confused about the truth Because it’s easier that way The mighty dragon breathing fire High on power While the people cower

Complicit in our silence At the end of the day War loving nation With oily hands around the globe Creating conflict In the name of what is owed Big words like freedom Just to disguise their money aim Big words like justice To justify this power game And they wonder why there’s so many dying

G. Charbonneau (SOCAN)

There’s a woman in the corner And her eyes are just like mine And the little chip of crystal Is a way to fill the time As the women shrink with sorrow And hold the reigns of blame The men all ache with anger From their childhoods of shame Fine line, it’s a fine line Money or computer Or the needle or the wine And it’s time, high time Things have gotta change No matter how you slice it Things have gotta rearrange If you look beyond the borders Of your stationary mind Whattcha gonna see in there Whattcha gonna find? Follow the arrow It starts in the dark That arrow Goes straight to Your heart It’s mine, it’s mine And it’s all I can do It’s a very fine line That separates me from you And the children with their caverns Needing guidance needing love Fill the spaces with white sugar Just another gateway drug And they run around like rodents

In the shadows in the night While the mothers on the corners Seek another brighter light Fine line It’s a fine line What makes a miracle What makes a crime Time, no time Quit being blind Open up your heart You gotta open up your mind Power is passing So we gotta Keep on asking For action And compassion not so much Distraction Look and you’ll see Who you could be She could be you Could be me The problem with the distance Is the holes are just too wide And the gaps keep getting bigger Cause we never go outside We keep our eyes turned downwards And we never search our heart And we bathe ourselves in blue light And grow further apart

K. Sherwin (SOCAN) I saw you the other night We exchanged only a few words You chose to sit at another table This has been happening for two years I live for love and open doors I’m grounded in my green room So when are you coming in To finally greet me The paint is peeling off my back stairs Rustic and grey handrails too It can be changed to whatever colour Pleases your senses The grass is growing on the other side Of the chain link fence Lucky I can see right through it And touch it if I want to Come with me and I’ll share with you Take my hand through the doorway We’re just about to walk the garden And sit at the same table The crow dives down to get the bread We talk about our wildest dreams Blinking our eyes in unison Fly back to our domains

G.Charbonneau (SOCAN) Mother Twenty-first century The trail you blazed for me Such a long way to go When I was a little girl I thought that women ruled the world My mama had a thing for politics I roamed the streets on roller skates My hair in Princess Leia braids And Wonder Woman bands around my wrists I slowly grew into a woman’s body I was smart, I was creative, I was strong I believed the world was my oyster There’s no one who would tell me I was wrong Onto University The men I knew were much like me We valued love, equality and art But through the years I grew to see That equal opportunity Was just a dream we kindled in our hearts ‘cause if you want to make it up the ladder You better not be caught wearing a dress Hard to see a future for our daughters When money is the measure of success It seems that men have less to prove Their roads are just a bit more smooth And all the doors are opening for them Their ideas dominate We give their words a bit more weight Yes, there’s more success in store for men We call for smoother roads and doors to enter We pray that inequality will end But we assign the power to their gender And women do it just as much as men

G. Charbonneau (SOCAN) For Oliver Schroer Simply a stranger, a man with a fiddle So much removal, but somehow so strong Simply vibrational, hair on a bowstring Rhythms of heartbeats, showers of songs And the stars all burn brighter every time you come on But you’re gone, leaving showers of songs Wandering, wondering, the cosmos is wide Searching for clarity, deciphering life Such generosity, such wisdom, such love You dove to your heart for us, pulled everything out Fall, fall up your Fall, fall up your

through the night, burn, burn, send light through the night, burn, burn, send light

World keeps on spinning, moon waxes and wanes People keep glowing, from your slivers of light Millions of stars, millions of souls Millions of melodies pour forth through the night
