Welcome to the IRO Holland Pavilion!

As the Ambassador of the Netherlands to Norway, it is my pleasure to present to you the latest edition of Offshore Holland magazine. It is also my pleasure to welcome you to the Offshore Northern Seas (ONS) in Stavanger, the largest energy meeting places in the world. Stavanger is considered the offshore capital of Europe.

In August the energy world will gather in Stavanger, the ‘center of innovation’, for the ONS 2018.

Over the last years, the offshore industry was facing a complicated time of transition and adjustment.

Although many reforms have been realized, like substantial cost reductions, there are still many challenges that need to be tackled. Global Climate Change and energy transition are some of those urgent and pressing issues that forces everyone to create new sustainable solutions with limited environmental impact.

For this reason, it is very relevant that the overarching theme of ONS 2018 will be “Innovate”.

Projections show the continued use and need for hydrocarbons, and luckily the offshore sector has long been at the forefront of innovation and improvement. The energy transition has gained momentum in the Netherlands with ever increasing

ambitions. Dutch companies have a long history of showcasing innovative technologies and knowhow at the ONS and in the North Sea itself. Many companies of the Netherlands are demonstrating how their products and solutions can be used to secure a diverse energy mix, with an increasing amount of clean and renewable sources, while maintaining energy security.

Many Dutch companies are also making a good business case for sustainability in the offshore sector by reusing and repurposing existing material and infrastructure. I believe this is an excellent example of the “Circular Economy” that the Netherlands is working to achieve by 2050. In the process of making our economy circular, we need to minimize waste, and find new and efficient methods of design and production. The 480m2 Holland Pavilion is the place to meet more

than 20 innovative Dutch suppliers in the oil and gas industry. They represent a good mix of offshore products and services, varying from offshore engineering to total offshore solutions.

The Dutch companies exhibiting at ONS, either in the Holland Pavilion or individually, follow a tradition of strong and impactful presence at the ONS. The Dutch participation has become an indispensable part of this biennial gathering, and I am excited to welcome you all to ONS 2018 and Stavanger. At ONS, we can all learn about new innovative technologies and ideas – many of which are featured in this latest edition of Offshore Holland. I wish you all a very useful and fruitful ONS!

OCEAN1100-HE design.

Mobile drilling units are hired by operators with the highest workability and efficiency in combination with total well costs in mind. Within this equation uptime becomes dominant in harsh conditions.

For shallow waters jack-ups are seen as the most efficient tools. Should the water depth or soil conditions prohibit jack-up use, semi-submersibles are the next best choice. Having its roots in the North Sea, GustoMSC has specialized in the development of harsh environment design solutions. The company’s jack-ups and semi-submersibles are designed to operate efficiently and safely in harsh and moderate environments in all water depths, worldwide.

Based on a large portfolio of successful semi-submersible units, GustoMSC launched a series of OCEAN-HE semi-submersible designs, ranging from the OCEAN850-HE, a low-cost moored solution, to the OCEAN1600HE, the top of the range design.

An in-house technical benchmark

study on global performance criteria such as uptime, deck space and drilling load shows that the OCEAN1100-HE offers a competitive design in this market segment.

Proven jack-up series

Since the 1970s, GustoMSC has been developing technical tools and insights to improve the design, analysis and optimization of its

jack-ups. This has resulted in the CJ series, which provides jack-up solutions from very shallow moderate waters up to harsh environment.

In up to 100 m (300 ft) water depth, the jack-up is the most popular option. A platform that rests on the ocean floor is stable: there are no significant excursions due to waves, wind and currents, as seen on floaters.

Recently, the company has developed and extended the CJ series with designs capable of operating further north in the North Sea with a harsher environment and deeper water: the Cat-J class. This customized GustoMSC CJ70 design, tailor-made for the harsh environment Norwegian Continental Shelf, has been developed in close cooperation with Equinor.

The Cat-J unit increases the efficiency of production drilling and subsea development by up to 20%. This is achieved by minimizing the down-time of the full operational cycle from installation to removal from a specific location. The aspects that are considered for improving efficiency include increased environmental conditions for the installation, increased skidding speed of the cantilever, and optimized sequences of the drilling process.

At present, a total of no less than 11 CJ70s are in operation, and of these, three are Category J (Cat-J) rigs.

Currently GustoMSC is working on a few solutions to increase the CJ70’s capabilities even further while safeguarding the overall safety of the unit and its operation.

Pioneering

For GustoMSC constant innovation and development are a must. Major drivers here are greater safety and increased efficiency. Teams of employees brainstorm on how they can push boundaries and take designs a step further. GustoMSC has to be prepared for what customers will be asking for in the years to come.

This usually results in evolutionary development of the next generation of existing products and technology.

On top of that, new products and technologies need to be conceived that sets the company apart from the competition and that draw customers. GustoMSC has set itself the target to be revolutionary to stay ahead of the game.

Portable subsea tension tool (STT)

IHC set to revolutionise subsea tensioning IHC has developed a unique subsea tensioning tool that will bring numerous benefits to companies in the offshore oil industry.

It highlights the innovative capabilities of IHC and its position in this competitive market.

For permanently moored floating objects, it is important from a safety perspective to maintain the correct mooring line tension. However, conventional methods used for tensioning are widely acknowledged to have several disadvantages.

They commonly require expensive equipment, which takes up deck space and adds weight to the floating object.

After its initial use, it is rarely used again for a period of up to a decade.

After which time, the equipment is difficult to mobilise due to a lack of maintenance, from it not being used in day-to-day operations.

Innovative alternative

Acknowledging this, a dedicated team at IHC has developed a patented alternative. The solution is a portable

subsea tension tool (STT), which is used to tension the mooring line after hook-up.

The tool is deployed and operated from a vessel and placed on the mooring line. It takes over the tension of the mooring line, then cuts the chain using a diamond wire saw, and applies the required tension. It then cuts the resulting excess length of chain and reconnects the mooring line.

After tensioning, the tool can be retrieved to be used on another mooring line. “With this tool, we are introducing a method for tensioning mooring lines that enhances safety, and reduces initial capex expenditure and operational costs during re-t ensioning,� explains IHC’s Project Manager Maurits van Wezel.

Multiple benefits

Safety is enhanced by the reduction of corrosion issues and fatigue commonly suffered by the top chains in mooring lines. “With the STT, you can use an alternative to chain for the top section, which means the mooring line in the splash zone can be designed to mitigate corrosion and fatigue issues. It therefore improves safety and the lifetime of the mooring line, and reduces the risk of failure,” says Maurits.

Reducing costs is another major benefit of the tool as IHC’s Engineering Manager Cor van der Harst explains: “Using the STT tool means that expensive deck equipment is no longer required. In addition, oil companies no longer have to worry about the significant outlay associated with getting that equipment working again after 10 years or more.”

the chain is pulled around tightly and held in place on the mooring line with a chain stopper. “The advantage of our tool is that the only thing that remains in the mooring line after tensioning is a standard H-link, which adds almost no extra weight,” explains Maurits. A ‘standard’ H-link available in the market can be used for re-connection of the chain after tensioning. In the competitor solutions, a non-conventional connector is left in the mooring line, which needs more effort to be qualify as a mooring component.

“Other underwater tensioning solutions I have seen so far in the market leave quite a lump of steel in the mooring line, adding further costs, which we don’t have with our solution.”

Using a standard H-link for reconnection is also the reason that the tool can be used for re-tensioning existing mooring lines.

Researching the market

The STT has resulted from a close interaction between IHC’s R&D and engineering and sales teams, who were in close contact with several major oil companies during the design process. “We’ve been talking to Total, Shell, Chevron, Petrobras, ExxonMobil and Statoil,” says IHC Sales Manager Ron Agterberg. “They have really helped by sharing their experiences and knowledge, which we have taken into account in the development phase.

We’ve had a lot of positive feedback and they can really see the advantages.”

Future opportunities

Once launched, IHC initially intends to offer the STT as a rental tool, although it will also be possible for oil companies to purchase if they prefer.

“We decided to offer it for rental

because of its complexity,” says Ron. “The market has to become familiar with how it works. We want to keep that knowledge within IHC for the moment and deliver it as a service instead.” Cor adds: “Renting the tool is an operational cost, which for such incidental maintenance is usually easier to justify then an investment.”

In addition to the offshore oil market, IHC has identified potential opportunities for the STT in the renewables industry, where reducing investment and saving on maintenance by using the STT will have a huge appeal. The cost reduction delivered by the IHC STT will support the economic development of floating Offshore Wind Farms at locations where monopoles are not feasible.

Whatever the future holds for the STT, the development of this unique equipment has put the innovative capabilities of IHC firmly in the spotlight. Consulting with potential customers has also been a positive experience. “Even if some of the companies we spoke to never use it – if they hadn’t heard of IHC before, now they have. This project has enabled us to be a good ambassador for IHC in that sense,” says Ron.

Money and technology in offshore What makes the world go round? Money or technology? In the world of energy, one is meaningless without the other. Offshore Energy Today recently sat down exclusively with two esteemed experts in the respective fields of technology and money – Ashok Belani, Executive Vice President Technology, Schlumberger and Marcel van Poecke, Head of Carlyle International Energy Partners – to talk about the impact of volatile oil prices, technology development, investments and what offshore developments we should pay attention to.

Ashok Belani has decades of experience in technology development in Schlumberger. We start with a much-discussed topic: lower for longer oil prices. Because despite a marked rise in crude prices and positive quarterly results for oil majors, few in the industry would claim that the lower-for-longer period is over.

Oil prices

How have technology development and innovation by Schlumberger and its clients been impacted?

“The amount of money spent on technology development has gone down over the last three years,” says Belani. “At the same time there is a big change in the way technology is developed and utilized. Which is why we have seen companies creating inventions that are more efficient, more performant and therefore more cost-efficient. So the idea that you can do new things, or exploit new reservoirs, or develop new resources and yet not spend as much money as say five years ago is acceptable. And it will continue to evolve in this direction.”

Dry powder

How have opportunities in upstream developed for private equity, in the lower oil price environment?

According to Marcel van Poecke, it has actually been a very good period for private equity to invest. Dutchman Van Poecke is the Head of Carlyle International Energy Partners and its fund. Launched in 2013 and with USD 2.5 billion raised, this fund targets global investments in oil and gas and oil field services excluding North America. Van Poecke has seen companies that ‘were stressed in terms of the balance sheets, dividend payments, and capex commitments.’

and about renewables, I say: We see some opportunities.”

Banks were less inclined to finance investments, which played into the hands of private equity ‘because we have dry powder (cash reserves kept on hand to cover future obligations, purchases or acquisitions, OET) to invest’. Van Poecke thinks private equity will become a more important player in oil and gas, as more capital becomes available because of institutional investors allocating more capital of their portfolio to private equity.

“A return target in excess of twenty percent is normal in private equity.

In renewables, this could be ten percent or even lower. “When investors hear that, they say: Can you please focus on oil and gas?”

Investing in renewables

Van Poecke focuses on oil and gas but gets more and more questions about investing in renewables.

“When investors approach us and ask what I think of the energy transition

Developing renewable energy is clearly important and we will see more and more renewable energy projects, though, in Van Poecke’s view, the market is still relatively small.

“The next question investors ask is: What sort of returns can you guarantee us compared to oil and gas; and that is a much more difficult question.”

Low carbon technology

Oil and gas majors, on the other hand, have stepped up their investments in new energies and low carbon technologies in recent years.

What does Ashok Belani, who has spent most of his life so far in improving oil field services, think about this?

For Belani, it’s all about technology development. Whether that is in oil and gas or renewables, does not seem to matter. “If one resource of energy

goes up with respect to the other resources, technology will go ahead and make that resource more efficient.”

He sees the move toward a lower carbon footprint progressing and expects that it will continue to change how technology is developed and applied.

independents. According to Van Poecke, the majors can sell more to independents and partner with them. Van Poecke thinks that new independents will be created with much more capital available in the coming years from private equity.

“We try to make processes more efficient in terms of their emissions footprint. I think that can be beneficial and I think it should drive not only technology development but the way we apply it or deploy it in the oil and gas business.”

Neptune Energy is an example but there are many comparable examples.

In the US, in particular, there are numerous independents and there is a lot of capital available. Van Poecke expects to see more of that in other parts of the world as well.

North Sea

Interesting areas

What about mature basins such as the North Sea – what kind of technology changes does Belani see there?

“There will be subsea developments which will be significantly more performant,” Belani says. Schlumberger is also looking at basin-wide exploration systems, utilizing new data and cloud technologies that will change practices used to date, make them more efficient and will according to Belani lead to more developments on the North Sea. “However, the North Sea has gone through a long hiatus in FIDs and investments. So in the near term, there will be some pressure on maintaining production on the North Sea.”

What areas have Van Poecke’s interest?

“We focus very much on Africa,” says Van Poecke, “We think there are very interesting opportunities in WestAfrica, both offshore and onshore.

We also see interesting opportunities in South America, especially in Colombia, Mexico, and Brazil.”

What should we be watching in technology, according to Belani?

Innovation in subsea development is one. But Schlumberger is innovating in many areas. Ashok Belani: “We are working a lot on drilling technology becoming much more efficient. And there is a big change in how seismic processing is going to get done.”

Renaissance

That hiatus seems to have ended.

According to Van Poecke, it is justified to speak of a renaissance of the North Sea. Although the North Sea is a mature basin, Van Poecke sees a lot of opportunities. “We did a big investment through Neptune Energy, where we bought ENGIE. That portfolio is big in Norway, substantial in the UK, in Holland and in Germany.”

When is a digital transformation strategy successful?

“It’s not one particular goal post,” says Belani. “The result is going to be a continuous realization of benefit. We will make exploration more efficient, we will make field development planning more efficient, we will make well construction more efficient, we will make production more efficient.

All of this will be enhanced by digital in the coming future and we will see that continuously.”

What is the most remarkable development Van Poecke has seen?

“The role of technology,” is Van Poecke’s immediate answer.

“We are going to a real shift and acceleration with new technology.

I see it on the renewable energy side but I see it even more so on the traditional oil and gas side.”

Van Poecke gives a list of examples: seismic imaging, the development of projects, the time to build things, the materials we use, the way we operate platforms, how everything becomes more efficient, in terms of costs, in terms of emissions, the role of big data processing. “The role of technology is amazing.”

With enough dry powder to invest along the oil and gas – and new energies – value chain, the world of energy will keep on turning.

22,000 t drilling platform topsides for Equinor’s Johan Sverdrup

‘Pioneering Spirit’ successfully installs 22,000t platform topsides Allseas’ single-lift installation/decommissioning and pipelay vessel ‘Pioneering Spirit’ marked another milestone on 2 June 2018 with the safe and successful installation of the 22,000 t Drilling Platform topsides for Equinor’s Johan Sverdrup development on the Norwegian continental shelf.

This was the first platform installation job performed by ‘Pioneering Spirit’, and the heaviest installation ever executed in a single lift offshore to date. ‘Pioneering Spirit’s motion-compensated topsides lift system beams accurately positioned the topsides on an eightlegged steel jacket standing at 110 m water depth, after which the installation went exactly as planned.

The 147 m tall topsides was transferred to ‘Pioneering Spirit’ by barge in Bømlafjorden, outside Stord, on 1 June. The vessel arrived nine hours later in the Johan Sverdrup field, located 160 km west of Stavanger, Norway, and operations commenced immediately.

The actual installation, from manoeuvring around the jacket,

setting down the topsides and moving out of the 500 m zone, only took three hours. The Drilling Platform topsides is the first of three structures ‘Pioneering Spirit’ will install during the Johan Sverdrup field’s first development phase. The vessel will return to the field in the spring of 2019 to install the 26,000t process platform topsides and the 18,000t living quarters platform topsides.

Major modification on McDermott pipelay vessel

Innovative J-lay system Royal IHC has been awarded a contract to modify McDermott’s pipelay and construction vessel ‘Amazon’. It includes the delivery of an innovative and complete J-lay system.

The contract was signed by McDermott’s Global Vice President Marine Assets & Operations Alan Marriott and Royal IHC’s Executive Director Services Diederik van Rijn.

Benchmark

Management

IHC will be responsible for the overall management of the modification project, from the design through to the integration of the new equipment.

It includes the build and installation of the IHC-designed and patented J-lay system, and associated on board multi joint factory, modifications to the ship’s structures, and the removal and replacement of the equipment and commissioning.

“We are setting a new benchmark for installing a multi-joint J-lay system in a vessel of this size,” adds Royal IHC’s Executive Director Mission Equipment Paul Hardisty. “Our novel approach for this J-lay system will be a game-changer in the market. We have been working on a collaborative and transparent approach with McDermott from the early tower concept stage to ensure that we deliver a solution that meets their expectations.”

Partnership

“We are delighted to have entered into this partnership with McDermott,” says Diederik van Rijn. “We have been working together for some time to develop the concept of this classleading integrated pipelay vessel, based on innovative IHC technology.

The project showcases IHC’s ability to combine our expertise to create

The physical modifications comprise the removal of the existing pipelay system and its replacement with a new J-lay system with a top dynamic capacity of 1,500 tonnes.

The J-lay system will be able to handle every variety of pipe including normal flowlines, export lines, and various pipe-in-pipe configurations, ranging

in size from 4.5 to 24 inches with wall thicknesses approaching 2 inches.

“The extensive use of existing proven technology and process automation, combined with early collaboration with the system designers, means we expect to have a very efficient and cost effective asset,” says Alan Marriott. “The ‘Amazon’ will provide a key enabling asset within the McDermott fleet and will allow us to compete on a global basis for the major deepwater/ultra-deepwater projects. The vessel is designed to be self-sufficient, allowing easy transition from project to project.

The vessel is expected to provide pull through opportunities for the rest of the McDermott subsea fleet.”

The ‘Amazon’ will be transferred to IHC for its physical conversion in August 2019, with the delivery of the upgraded J-lay vessel scheduled for summer of 2020. Once the modifications are complete, the pipelay vessel will meet the industry’s requirement for pipelay and construction in the ultra-deep water market.

Boskalis scoops Bokor topside transport and installation deal Engineering Sdn Bhd (MMHE) for the transportation and float-over installation of a topside for the Bokor Central Processing Platform Phase 3 redevelopment project in Malaysia’, about 45km northwest of Lutong.

Dutch energy and dredging services provider Boskalis has received a letter of award for the transportation and float-over installation of a platform topside off Malaysia.

The topside will be constructed by a yard in Malaysia and will be skidded onto an open-stern heavy transport vessel. For the purpose of this project, an existing vessel will be modified and become dynamic positioning (DP2) compliant allowing it to work in close proximity to offshore structures. The project is due to be executed in 2020.

The first steel is expected to be cut in the third quarter of 2018 and the platform is expected to be completed in the mid-second quarter of 2020.

Modules

Boskalis also said it won a sizable logistical management contract for the transportation of a large number of modules from a fabrication yard in Asia to a plant being developed in North America.

The contract ties up two high-end open-stern heavy transport vessels for approximately 475 vessel days each beginning in late 2019.

OOS International enters offshore maintenance partnership a collaborative working relationship which would deliver a number of key prospects together for various clients.

Dutch provider of heavy lift and accommodation solutions OOS International has signed a long-term cooperation agreement with Forship Engenharia to pursue offshore maintenance projects mainly in the Brazilian region.

According to the company, both parties wish to establish
