What an adventure it’s been! Without meaning to sound grandiose, these 10 years have been a journey of actualisation for this Festival with any notions of imposter syndrome quickly drifting away, as the appeal of Birr rapidly grew in the creative hearts and minds of Filmmakers and Fans throughout Ireland and beyond. Looking back at the past 10 years, and trying to distinguish one year from the next, it’s always the memories of the people behind the films that stand out. Yes - their films certainly always bring a smile or a tear or a thrill - but only as a sort of bas relief of the Filmmaker as a person themselves. So it’s with great excitement that we look forward to the scores of people that will bring themselves, their crew or their work to the tenth OFFline.
There’s such an exciting programme of short films this year. If you think you won’t like short films - think again! Take some time out to see even one of the 3 Shorts sessions happening on Saturday afternoon.
Friday sees another great Industry day lined up with Birr’s very own Peter Campion and Tullamore’s location guru David O’Reilly just some of the experts taking part. That’s followed by the second Animation Residency ‘Show and Tell’ where you’ll get to see the work of Birr’s latest Animators on display.

For year 10 we’re also doing something a bit different for opening night: We’re showcasing all that’s great and good about filmmaking in the area with our Made In Midlands section. Come along to kick the Festival off with a peek at what’s happening in the world of film so close to home. And if you’re feeling inspired you can sign yourself up to the 57 Hour Filmmaking Challenge with one of the visiting crews. It’s become such a keynote for OFFline, we can’t wait to see where and who they shoot in Birr this year! With huge thanks to our Funders, local business Sponsors, our incredibly generous Patrons, ticket-buyers, film-location hosts and volunteers who make OFFline possible (many of whom have been with us all the way!) - Enjoy #10!

HOUR FILMMAKING CHALLENGE
Over the past 10 years we’ve seen some strange and wonderful sights around Birr as teams of filmmakers navigate their way from the Slieve Blooms to Lough Boora shooting in every nook and cranny in between. It’s actually more difficult to name a location that hasn’t been used as a set. And just about every genre of short film has been hashed out in front of camera too - zombie apocalypse, comedy, drama, dramedy (did dramedy even exist 10 years ago?). We don’t think OFFliners can imagine the Festival without the 57 Hour Challenge. So to all Birr locals out there - get involved - on either side of the camera - and come along to see your work on screen on Sunday 13th October at 2:30pm in Birr Theatre. You’re a star waiting Pantone P 68-7 U to be discovered! Pantone P 45-8 U DATE & TIME

An affecting tale of Mylia, a 12 year old girl in Centre-du-Québec, struggling to fit in, until she finds solace in the outdoors with fellow outsider Jimmy, a boy of Abenaki descent. Together they navigate the precariousness of their environments, confronting concepts of citizenship and belonging. Beautifully shot and tenderly observed, this remarkable coming-of-age tale explores themes of loneliness and connection through its moving story.
Spoiled 30-something Lenny reluctantly agrees to act as a big brother figure to David, a fragile 15-year-old who is struggling to make friends. An unlikely bond forms between the two as they set out with David’s long wish-list of things he’d like to do, ‘just-in-case’.
16 year old Lois dreams of becoming an astronaut. Although gifted in physics, she has a big problem: Lois weighs over 200 pounds. Just when everything seems lost, Lois meets three new friends who are similarly shattered by life’s tough breaks. Motivating each other to aim for outer space, this is a sweet, touching story about friendship and self-belief.

In Touch In Touch is a story of people from a little Polish village called Pantone P 45-8 U Stare Juchy (in Polish: Old Blood) located in Masuria, an area often referred to as ‘’land of thousand lakes’’. Around 400 people from this village have emigrated to Iceland since the 80’s and nobody has returned. Those who stayed behind - most of them from the older generation - are hoping for a reunion. But by now, their children and grandchildren are settling into new lives on the other side of Europe. The distance separating them is great and the journey expensive; so they don’t get to hug each other very often. The best alternative is intensive contact by Skype.

Pantone P 68-7 U Irish animators
Here is a message from the CEO of HACK inc. who for legal reasons would prefer to remain nameless: “Hellow. We are HACK inc. We are an animation thing but we are also a company who make “Animated Content™”. Over the years we done AN ALTERNATIVE ANIMATION FESTIVAL IN DUBLIN CALLED HACKFEST where we played animated filums that some people didn’t even get paid to make but they are still important. here is A SPECIAL SELECTION OF OUR MOST COST EFFICIENT FILUMS to give you a sample of just what we can do. Ireland is changing fast and animation is changing faster and bizness is changing faster but HACK is faster than all of that so let us HACK you today! #HACK”
Gareth Lyons is an animation creative working in Dublin. He has directed a number of shorts and TV shows including the RTÉ animated sitcom Ends Meet. He created and curates an alternative animation festival called HACKfest, now in its sixth year. Working with Paper Panther Productions, Gareth has taught a number of animation workshops all over Ireland for children and young adults to introduce animation as a viable creative outlet and to encourage work which goes beyond prevailing business interests of contemporary industry focused animation. Gareth plans to stop writing this bio….right now. Aoife Balfe is a real life artist based in Dublin. Since graduating from Animation at IADT in 2013 she has worked as a designer, illustrator, and animator on a number of commercial projects and short films, as well as real life artworks and zines. She also works educating the youth, from animation workshops with Paper Panther for primary and secondary school students to teaching third level animation students.
Happening before, during and after OFFline is a special animation programme thanks to investment from Offaly County Council and the JVM Trench Will Trust. What’s it all about? I hear you say… Read on! Take Me To Your Leader! A heinous alien overlord has come to conquer Earth. His name is... Barry. On arrival his computer malfunctions leaving him lost and confused. Who is the leader? How can he find them and conquer the planet? Barry flies from town to town trying to find out about government in order to conquer it! Along the way he learns about community, co-operation and civic engagement which starts to make him think twice about this world domination thing. Take Me To Your Leader! is a workshop based web series which aims to encourage civic and political engagement. Young people are invited to write, draw and star in a collaborative piece of animation, learning each part of the process. The content of the shorts will relate to local issues with the intent of introducing young people to the very basics of Irish government and ways they can make a positive impact on their community; hoping to make the idea of animated filmmaking less intimidating while doing the same to politics.
