MAINTAIN COMMUNITY’S CONNECTION TO THE SITE

ADAPTIVE / REUSE

The gradual and near imperceptible shift to unhealthy lifestyles in the United States has led to a health crisis that threatens individuals and the environment. This project fosters cognizant sustainable living in a hyper-dense urban complex that supports mental and physical activity, action, and awareness. A sustainable environment that promotes sustainable living, conscious decision making through versatile active zones, a reverse engineered retail grocery store, and a ecological transportation network.

Retail spaces offer fresh and highly nutritious food for residents in the building and in the nearby community.

The transportation center encourages alternative modes to navigating the city to reduce reliance on cars.

Water Rejuvenation:

This building takes multiple measures in create a self-sufficient water system for agriculutral and domestic use.

Living Breathing Building:

This building is intentionally carved out in multiple spaces to allow for natural ventitlation

Open-air community bar space. This semipublic space offers a wide range of seating arrangements and amenities across an open floor plan over looking the Lafayette area.

Community fitness zone offers a variety of spaces that cater to the active physical needs of the residents and local community.

Yoga classes are offered in a open air environment filled with vegetation. Greywater treatment and collection assist urban agriculture on site which in turn provides the community with fresh produce.

Underground public space is filled with multiple rental retail spaces for local community businesses, such as food and art.

Vertical climbing public green space activates the entire bottom half of the building with major transportation hub, active zones, and retail.

Blue Zones are regions of the world where Dan Buettner claims people live much longer than average due to healthy life choices and habits. (The Power 9)

Sky-bar, high-class affordable dining in the sky zone with views over the whole region. Angled skylights allow for direct sunlight protection and optimized natural lighting into the space.

Operable windows allow for sustainable living and energy saving through cross ventilation, providing natural air flow and regulated temperatures.

Rainwater is filtrated and cleaned through the green roof vegetation and used for landscape irrigation. Green roof allows for community planting and reduced heat gain to the building below.

Community market offers healthy alternatives for better living habits with on site locally grown produce.

Parking garage is integrated with the community market to allow for local farmers market opportunities.

Biomass energy is used to heat the community sauna.

DaBerry Fresh Market

West End - New Iberia, LA

Health + Wellness Community Sensitive

Adaptive Reuse + New Construction

Design Excellence Award

Through a series of conversations and interviews with local community patrons, this project seeks to capture the heart of mental health issues in the West End. The architectural interventions here are focused on encouraging interaction between community members while simultaneously breaking the barriers of stigma and empowering ‘self’ to promote a healthier lifestyle.

Hopkins St used to be the economic lifeline of the West End (the predominantly low income Black African American). DaBerry Fresh Market is located in a food desert with the closes grocery store being more than a 20 minute walk away. Most community member primary form of transportation is by bike or on foot. DaBerry Fresh Market is vital to the West End community because it offers a space for individuals to escape their everyday trials and tribulations. Many young teenagers refer to working at the Fresh Market as therapeutic offering valuable time for self reflection, meditation, and peace. Carl is the owner of DaBerry Fresh Market and primary caretaker of the site.

Coming back here really helps keep me calm. School is stressful, and my dad just lost his job. Sorry to hear that. I know what you’re going through, and coming to the market has really helped me get through it.

This really is the perfect spot to get away from everything.

What do you think the kids would like to do today when they get here after school? I think Carl wants to show them how to plant their own vegetable garden.

Joe has been having trouble at school and I think the market could really help him.

I’ll let Carl know, he would love to have him around to help.

How’s your family doing? They’re doing alright. They love the progress and impact the market is making in New Iberia. Yes! It’s just what this community needed.

Re-imagine an ecological mid-rise mixed-use, timber structure on a vacant water front near the east river and Queensbridge park. This project set its focus on creating a model of an elaborate biophilic design space for the city. Innovative technologies in a diverse set of wood types push the narrative of social, urban, and biophilic living.

The multidimensional and economically diverse development include the creation of multi-modal transit center to connect Woodlawn residents to the greater city of Chicago and the creation of lease space for new, local businesses along with open greenspaces and new healthy living and working opportunities.

Boundless optimism and practical strategies define the proposal for the Woodlawn neighborhood on the south side of Chicago.

Plant it forward (PIF) is a non-profit organization based in Houston, TX that economically assists refugees with agricultural skills in the area. PIF gives refugees a place where they can grow and harvest their own produce to sell for personal economic growth. PIF is a sustainable urban farm in Houston, and plays a vital role in Houstonians health and wellness. The Plant It Forward organization offers a familiar environment in a foreign country to individuals to allow them to be prosperous in ways they never could before, while evoking feelings accomplishment, security and peace. This project focuses on designing a new facility for PIF on 40 acres of newly acquired land. This projects success is a result of valuable feedback from current refugee farmers, PIF board members and employees, and Stantec intern coordinators.
