Terres de Nacre is located in Normandy, along the landing beaches of the Canadian JUNO and British Sword sectors, a stone’s throw away from Caen and Bayeux.

Terres de Nacre’s twelve towns between land and sea make it the perfect travel destination: water sports, hikes, emotional experiences on the sites of the D-Day landings and an immediate feeling of wellbeing.

Land of marine escape

Famous for its sea air and invigorating baths, the Côte de Nacre stretches over 6km from Courseulles-sur-mer to Luc-sur-mer.

Alongside its sandy beaches run pedestrianised dykes dotted with the famous white beach huts.

Relax under the shade of a parasol, try an aquatic walking taster session, take a stroll along the marina or even check out the beach club activities: there’s something for everyone. For those keen on big thrills, the sailing clubs and schools from Courseulles-sur-mer to Luc-sur-mer offer the chance to try out different water sports: catamarans, sailing dinghies, windsurfing, funboarding, sea kayaking, kitesurfing, stand up paddle boarding, etc.

Bathers can discover the benefits of sea water… and the Luc-surmer seaweed! Marine therapies, oriental hammam, Japanese baths, sauna, etc. Treat yourself to some down time at Thalasso des 3 Mondes in Luc-sur-mer.

Land of nature

Walks: stroll along the hiking trails between the land and the sea searching for architectural sites. The Cap Romain nature reserve in Saint-Aubin-sur-mer, famous for its Jurassic era fossils, is also waiting to be discovered.

Cycling: ride along the many cycle routes through coastal landscapes and wheat fields around Douvres-la-DĂŠlivrande. Cycle in complete safety along the routes from Caen to the sea, passing through Douvres-la-DĂŠlivrande and the countryside along the way.

Horse-riding: choose between a ride along the beaches of Courseulles-sur-mer to Luc-sur-mer or a ride to explore the countryside. Equestrian centres offer activities for all ages for those wishing to enjoy this sport, famed in Normandy.

Land of history

Inland: As you wander, immerse yourself in the charm of picturesque limestone villages built in the inland region during the Middle Ages. Roman or Gothic churches, Anglo-Norman structures, medieval fiefdoms such as La Baronnie, the NotreDame de la DĂŠliverande basilica, home to the statue of the Black Virgin, Second World War sites and museums, the whale museum, Art Nouveau and Rococo villas along the sea front. History and heritage lovers will not be left out!

Along the coast: The fashion for spas was popular in the 19th century; the railway lines were built to encourage Parisians to spend their holidays in Normandy. Fishing villages made way for fashionable seaside resorts dotted with parks and gardens. The Belle Epoque villas which survived the Landings proudly line the CĂ´te de Nacre dykes.

La Baronnie Douvres-la-Délivrande

France had been occupied since 1940. In 1941, fearing a landing, Hitler ordered the construction of the Atlantic wall along the North, Channel and the Atlantic seas. The wall was mainly formed of batteries and obstacles set up on the beaches, some traces of which can still be seen along the coast and inland today.

Normandy was the arena of the historic 1944 battle.

On the 6th of June, more than 150,000 soldiers landed in Normandy from the sea and from the sky to liberate France and then Europe from the Nazis’ grip.

Wander the Juno and Sword beaches, following the traces of our Canadian and British liberators. Visit the Second World War memorials and history museums, such as the Radar museum in Douvres-la-Déliverande and the Juno Beach Centre in Courseullessur-mer. Take time to reflect at the graves of those who gave their lives for our freedom.

WATER SPORTS

With 10km of coastline, Terres de Nacre offers a range of water sports for all tastes and ages from 3 years old: paddling, kitesurfing, wakeboarding, catamarans, sand yachts, boat trips, etc.

From Courseulles-sur-mer to Luc-sur-mer, each seaside resort hosts a nautical institution: 3 sailing schools offer introductory sessions, courses and trips with commentary, there are 2 yacht cubs – one for members and the other for summer holidaymakers.

WATER SPORTS Luc yacht club given a facelift

The 70s structure of the yacht club, second in Calvados in terms of numbers of graduates, has been demolished to make way for a brand new building to be opened in June 2018. The sailing school won’t be closed however! It is moving temporarily to the east of the fishing pier.

The modern 540m² new building will offer an uninterrupted view of the sea through large bay windows. Offices, shared spaces, changing rooms and a technical room will be spread over two floors. The project forms part of a revamping of the resort’s sea front, centred around the renovation of the Place du Petit Enfer between now and 2020. The municipal council has decided to rename the school ‘Amiral Brace de La Perrière Sailing School’, in homage to the former mayor of Luc-sur-mer and former President of the Landing Committee who passed away in May 2017.

Made of concrete with no explosive device and therefore harmless, the bomb was moved and the work started safely!

WATER SPORTS Kitesurfing: a sport with the wind in its sails in Langrune-sur-mer

The CĂ´te de Nacre is an ideal spot for kitesurfing. More and more sailing lovers are trying out this technically challenging sport which offers big thrills.

The Voiles de Nacre sailing school, opened in Lagrune-sur-mer in May 2015, has been offering personalised courses and lessons in kitesurfing for all levels from 14 years old for just over a year.

Antoine, an instructor at Voiles de Nacre, will be trained to run kitsefuring courses and lessons alongside Damien from the 2018 season. The team plans to invest in new equipment for advanced lessons.

WATER SPORTS La Berniéraise, a great nautical gathering in honour of the Canadians at Bernières

A great nautical gathering, in a festive and friendly spirit, will be organised as part of the Normandy D-Day Festival on Saturday 2nd June in Bernièressur-mer.

La Berniéraise flies the Canadian colours to pay homage to the Canadian soldiers who fought and gave their lives on the Normandy beaches of the JUNO sector in June 1944.

This calm and environmentally friendly sailing event is open to all crafts, be it paddles or sailing boats: rafts, dories, old sailing ships, electric boats, kayaks, paddles, wakeboards, yachts. Crafts made from any materials are also allowed provided they float! No fewer than 200 Canadian flags will flutter in the wind, attached to the boat masts.

In the spirit of conviviality, each participant will be part of a team or flotilla.

All the flotillas will join for a Great Sail-Together and a landing, opposite the ‘Maison des Canadiens’.

Christelle, a Terres de Nacre tourist office guide, takes visitors over the rocks of the Côte de Nacre to explore: • Variations in the landscape • Small creatures and vegetation deposited by the sea • The lower beach in search of the marine animals living under and around the wave-cut platform Christelle also informs participants about good practice and regulations concerning recreational shore fishing.

Visit suitable for accompanied children or adults with learning difficulties.

Flavours and gastronomy There is no shortage of praise for Norman produce. Indeed, its fame goes without saying. Apples, cheeses, butter, cream, cider, pear cider, pommeau and shellfish: all these typical foods can be found at marketstalls or on the menu at Terres de Nacre restaurants!

The Courseulles-sur-mer fish market, every day along the fishing port The Courseulles-sur-mer fish market, situated along the fishing port, offers a wide choice of fish, shellfish and crustaceans. People come from far and wide to sell fish freshly caught that morning by the twenty or so Courseulles boats and trawlers. Passers-by can also spot many restaurateurs from the neighbouring area and resorts who come to stock up from a dozen well-stocked stalls.

Theres’s mackerel, sea bass, red mullet, John Dory, sand shrimp, prawns, crab, mussels, whelk, scallops and even lobster, which is fished offshore among the wrecks of Second World War boats.

Sample some oysters with your white wine aperitif, looking out on the spectacle of the seagulls dancing along the traces of the fishing boats.

Sea Festival, 12th August 2018: a Courseulles family festival with an open air mass, a parade of decorated boats, rescue dog demonstrations, tours of the French Lifesaving Society speedboat, concerts or kayaking taster sessions spread over two days of merriment and festivity.

FLAVOURS Gui-Gui, a Norman sweet that sticks to your teeth!!

An unmissable treat from Luc-sur-mer When staying on the Côte de Nacre, you can’t miss GuiGui, a sweet treat made of 100% sugar which has been around for over one hundred years. It can be enjoyed rolled around a small stick of wood while walking along the dyke with the wind in your hair!

An ancestral recipe which still has the wind in its sails Mr Gros opened his first Gui-Gui shop in Luc-sur-mer in 1906. At that time, the shopfront was made of wood. Inspired by the marshmallows he’d seen at fairgrounds, Mr Gros created the recipe for Gui-Gui and guarded it jealously for himself and his descendants, who ran the little shop for many decades. Other shops also sprung up in Courseulles-sur-mer, Luc-sur-mer and even Langrune-sur-mer.

The ancestral recipe for stretched sugar, as well as the shop itself, was sold to the Crochard family in the 1970s. Sam and Jordy, the current owners, learnt the art of preparing proper Gui-Gui from Mr Crochard. Still on the original premises, which have been renovated whilst keeping the retro style, they are the last on the Côte de Nacre to offer Gui-Gui that our grandparents would have recognised.

Close to nature and soon organic!

Keen for the flavour to be as close as possible to that of the original Gui-Gui, Sam and Jordy only use natural flavours and colourings. Strawberry, cola, banana, apple are just some of the 30 flavours offered over the season and according to the pair’s whims.

In 2018, the two friends have decided to go organic!

A holiday souvenir

Less smelly than camembert in a suitcase, Gui-Gui can now be brought back as a holiday souvenir! Ask the two Lutins (the name of Luc-sur-mer inhabitants also means elves in French!) for the product to be vacuum packed. You can then keep it in the fridge or freezer.

FLAVOURS Courseulles oysters, the stars of the seafood platter

Courseulles-sur-mer oyster farms

Courseulles oyster farming is a family business. In the 1950s, the Benoist family began farming and selling oysters farmed on tables in Meuvaines then refined in the basins and clean water pools of Courseulles-sur-mer.

The produce is fragile and requires a lot of care from the Benoist children and grand-children, who are now the owners of the basins.

They export high-quality oysters - fleshy on the inside and less salty than their neighbours from the Channel.

Courseulles oysters can be sampled on the terrace of one of the restaurants that have sprung up around the basins.

Tourism of remembering Normandy is a real open-air museum. Many traces of the Second World War are the remains of German constructions during the occupation and the scale of the landings on the 6th of June 1944.

Juno Beach The 3rd Canadian Infantry Division and the 2nd Canadian Armoured Brigade assaulted the stretch of beach codenamed Juno, capturing the coastal towns of Graye-sur-Mer, Courseulles-sur-Mer, Bernières-sur-Mer and part of Saint-Aubin-sur-Mer. Courseulles was liberated by the 7th Canadian Infantry Brigade, consisting of the Regina Rifles, the Royal Winnipeg Rifles, and the Canadian Scottish regiments, supported by the First Hussars Tanks, the 12th and 13th Field Regiments and the Royal Canadian Engineers.By the evening of D-Day, the Canadians were firmly established some 12 kilometres inland.

Canadians at war During the Second World War many Canadian families were separated, sometimes for several years, living in permanent fear of never again seeing a husband, a father, a son or a brother. The country as a whole participated in the war effort, supplying troops with much-needed equipment and supplies. By the end of the war, over a million Canadians wore the uniform, making a decisive contribution to the Allied forces.

On June 6, 1944, 14,000 of the 135,000 allies who landed or parachuted into Normandy were Canadians. After the United States and Great Britain, Canada contributed the largest number of troops to the D-Day invasion.

Canadian casualties totalled 1,074 men, of whom 359 were killed. The 10-week campaign in Normandy resulted in over 18,000 Canadian casualties; of these, approximately 5,500 were killed. Most are buried in the two Canadian cemeteries at Bény-sur-Mer/Reviers and Cintheaux/Bretteville-sur-Laize.

Juno Beach Centre, the only Canadian second world war museum in Europe In the 1990s, Garth Webb, a Canadian D-Day veteran, became the driving force of an ambitious project: construction of the Juno Beach Centre, dedicated to the role played by the Canadians during the Second World War. Thanks to the hard work of the Juno Beach Centre Association, on June 6, 2003, Garth Webb and hundreds of Canadian and British veterans were present at the Centre’s opening. Jean Chrétien, Prime Minister of Canada, and Jean-Pierre Raffarin, Prime Minister of France, both attended the nauguration.

The Juno Beach Centre is not just the only Canadian Second World War museum in Europe but it is also a place for education that has been eft as a legacy by the veterans who participated in its creation. The Ministry of Canadian Heritage has designated this site to be of national historic significance to Canada. It is also a place where many Canadians pay tribute and reflect on their own history.

Canadian guides At the Juno Beach Centre, visitors are welcomed by young Canadian guides who also conduct guided tours of the bunkers of Juno Park and educational activities for school groups. Young Canadians from all over the country come to work at the museum to assure authentically Canadian customer service.

Guided tours are organised by the Canadian guides of the Juno Beach Centre, on the very beach of the Canadian landing.

A center of interpretation 5 exhibitions spaces and 2 films to present the war effort made by all Canadians, civilian and military alike, on the various fronts during the Second World War.

In 2018, the Juno Beach Centre celebrates 15 years 15 years of encouraging new generations to remember. 15 years of connecting different generations of visitors, between Normandy and Canada. 15 years of remembering the Canadians that fought in the Second World War, on Juno Beach and elsewhere. 15 years of recalling that this shared history and memory are a means to better understand the world in which we live today and the values we hold dear: peace and freedom.

New youth circuit Beginning in February 2019, Peter and Madeleine, the two virtual characters that guide visitors aged 7 to 12 throughout the Juno Beach Centre, will be replaced by a redesigned and modernized circuit, offering a completely new experience for families. With new interactive modules, including a digital app on tactile screens, the museum will be further adapted to a young audience.

For primary and secondary school groups, two new digital apps will enable teachers and students to take part in a visit led by a Canadian guide, before concluding around a giant tactile tablet where they will discuss current topics related to Canada today.

Temporary Exhibition coming « Great women during the war 39-45 » February 2019 An exhibition developed by the Canadian War Museum, in partnership with the Juno Beach Centre.

During the Second World War, women experienced anguish, fear, worry, mourning, as well as hope. They contributed to the war effort, worked, mobilized their energy and their skills to seize new opportunities, and successfully fulfilled new responsibilities, often receiving little recognition in return. They paved the way for profound social change.

This exhibition pays tribute to some of these women, Canadian and European, in recognition of their bravery and their humility.

The hourse’s story Built in 1928 on behalf of Leon Enault, manager of the ‘Grands Magasins du Louvre’ department store, the villa is in neo-Norman style. In 1936, part of the villa was bought by Doctor Edmond Hoffer. The Hoffer family still owns the house. Aware of their duty to remember the past, the Hoffers created an organisation called the ‘Maison des Canadiens’ or the ‘House of the Canadians’ and willingly opened their doors to veterans and visitors. Upon entering, the visitor is immersed in history: period military uniforms, military equipment, engravings of Bernières-sur-mer during the Landings, Canadian regimental flags, not to mention the numerous medals that Veterans have chosen to put on display there.

The outbreak of war In 1940, Bernières-sur-mer was occupied by the Germans. Dozens of houses were demolished to make way for the Atlantic Wall. But the villa was preserved as a watchtower equipped with an anti-aircraft machine gun. In June 1944, allied bombing intensified. The villa was severely affected but remained standing. For the Allies, it was a significant point on the coast for the troops who were to land there. It appears in the maps drawn up by the Allies and, for all the men who landed at Juno, it was ‘The Famous House’.

D-day At 7.15, the Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada landed at Bernières. The rough sea prevented the landing of artillery and heavy equipment; the soldiers suffered very heavy losses. But they managed to destroy the German equipment and dislodge the soldiers hidden in the cellars of the houses.

The Famous House was soon to be occupied by the British Admiral Cooper who made it his headquarters until September 1944. His goal was to coordinate supplies for the Allied troops advanced inland.

The house features in many photos taken on D-Day both by both British and Canadian war correspondents. They were published at the start of the Liberation. Renamed the ‘Maison des Canadiens’, it even appeared on a Canadian stamp in November 1994!

The lantern ceremony Each year in June, the Hoffer family and the Westlake Brothers Souvenir association organizes a lantern ceremony to pay homage to the soldiers who landed at the Bernières-sur-mer beach: to the sound of bagpipes, a storm lantern and flowers are thrown into the sea, to ‘put out the flames of war’.

The ‘Maison des Canadiens’ has become a real symbol of the Landings both for Bernières’ inhabitants and for Canadians and Brits.

The only radar site at the Landing beaches Set up in a former German detection centre, the radar museum presents the history of the site and of radar in the bunkers from the period. It is now the only site in France displaying one of 5 models in the world of Würzburg radar.

The radar museum, a vestige of the Atlantic Wall, allows visitors to explore this little known aspect of the Second World War: the ‘Wizard War’!

An app to visit the museum using your smartphone Audiospot is an app that is free to download. Your smartphone or tablet is transformed into a guide that accompanies you throughout the visit: testimonies, images, extra information and more.

An inspired and inspiring organization Philippe Renault, President of the ‘Amis du Radar’ organisation, and its members welcome visitors for a guided tour of the site and bunkers in French and English, including anecdotes, presentation of soldiers’ lives in the bunkers, radar technology stakes during the war, etc.

The guides present this page of history to those interested. Aside from being a Second World War museum, this site aims to be a place of Franco-German reconciliation.

12th D-Day Festival Normandy - 26 May to 10 June 2018 Every year since 2007, the D-Day Festival Normandy has offered a programme of festive and tourist events for the anniversary of the Allied landings in Normandy on the 6th of June 1944.

On the programme: Saturday 2nd June 11am/3pm, Bernières-sur-mer / La Berniéraise: a great nautical gathering which brings together sailing or rowing enthusiasts for a responsible, friendly and festive Sail-Together. All crafts participating in the Berniéraise will fly Canadian colours in homage to the Canadians.

Saturday 2nd June 5pm, Juno Centre, Courseulles-sur-mer / conference: Tom Wilson, an Anglo-Canadian priest, will give a conference on Allied chaplains during the Battle of Normandy.

Saturday 2nd June 8.30pm, Juno Centre, Courseulles-sur-mer / concert: on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the Juno Beach Centre and the 74th anniversary of D-Day, the museum is offering a free concert with the Nathalie Pena Vieira quartet (swing from the 1940s and 50s).

Nature There are numerous walking routes which start on the Côte de Nacre.

Discover dykes dotted with Belle Epoque towns with Caen stone houses surrounded by wheat field and architectural treasures on foot, by bike or on horseback.

The network of over 30km of cycle trails, green pathways and shareduse lanes gives visitors chance to discover Terres de Nacre from a new angle, far from urban bustle. Try out the longest cycle path from Caen to the sea, via Douvres-la-Délivrande.

A number of equestrian centres offer a range of seaside or countryside rides.

Nature Cycling

A short distance from the Vélo Francette cycle route, Terres de Nacre has many facilities for bikes, including a network of cycle trails, green pathways and shared-use lanes over more than 30km.

Cycle trails from Caen to the sea Amateur cyclists can enjoy the longest cycle trail in Calvados which connects Caen to the sea, fully designed with bikes in mind. This provides safety and comfort, especially for families with children. The route allows one to ‘go back in time’: leaving from Caen, a medieval city which was home to William the Conqueror then passing through Douvres-la-Déliverande, the former radar station for the Atlantic Wall before arriving at the landing beaches of the Sword sector.

Bike hire In partnership with Loc Vélo, the Terres de Nacre tourist office offers its visitors bike hire in season from its tourist information offices in Saint-Aubin-sur-mer and Bernières-sur-mer. Helmets, baby seats, saddlebags and trailers are also available upon request.

La Petite Reine A partner of the Terres de Nacre tourist office, La Petite Reine is a family business that offers various electric bike visits around Normandy. This tourist cycle route is part of EuroVelo route n° 4.

EuroVelo is the European network of cycle routes, a network of 14 long-distance routes which cross the entire continent.

EuroVelo route n° 4 starts in Dunkirk and ends in Roscoff. It crosses France from the North West to the North via sites including the Morlaix Bay, Mont-Saint Michel, the landing beaches and the Baie de Somme.

More than 160 musicians, with a dozen different nationalities, attend the academies, which include choir singing, violin, viola, cello, piano, guitar and brass section.

‘La Pierre à poissons’ Stall Saint-Aubin-sur-mer July and August Information: www.terresdenacre.com Every year, the Saint-Aubin-sur-mer festival committee sets up a reconstruction of an old-style stone table fish stall, called the ‘Pierre à poissons’, on the beach.

Visitors can taste mussels and freshly caught grilled fish, with a musical accompaniment. This kind of fish stall is a coastal tradition which began on the coast at the start of the last century, and which has been maintained once a year in Saint-Aubin-sur-mer.

Antique Tractor Festival Bernières-sur-mer July Information: www.terresdenacre.com This antique tractor gathering attracts amateur mechanics and enthusiasts who nostalgically present these colourful vehicles, which were still used to tow agricultural machines or fishing boats a few years ago, to the younger generation.

The paintings are then put on display. A jury selects the best paintings which are then sold at auction.

Sea Festival August Courseulles-sur-mer and Luc-sur-mer Infomation: www.terresdenacre.com The two towns celebrate maritime traditions in a warm and festive atmosphere.

After mass, a procession of the Virgin and the blessing of the boats, the public can enjoy a number of events on site: concerts, decorated boat competitions, taster sessions for nautical sports, rescue dog demonstrations, various stalls.

‘Semaine Acadienne’ August Courseulles-sur-mer, Luc-sur-mer, Saint-Aubin-sur-mer, Douvres-la-Délivrande Infomation: www.semaineacadienne.net The 13th ‘Semaine Acadienne’ will take place from the 8th to the 15th of August 2018. This festival was initially created to strengthen the bonds between the Côte de Nacre and Acadie which were formed during the June 1944 Landings. One of the key events of the ‘Semaine Acadienne,’ which is particularly enjoyed by families, is the great din. The din is a proud Acadian tradition. It involves walking and making as much noise as possible, by hitting a saucepan for example, to celebrate the Acadian national festival, on the 15th of August. The din refers to the great disruption of 1755, when locals who refused to pledge allegiance to the English were deported. On the programme for the ‘Semaine Acadienne’: concerts, choirs, exhibitions, cooking workshops based on maple, conferences, theatrical performances, dinner shows.

Natasha St Pier who greatly enjoyed her visit to Courseulles-sur-mer in 2017 will be back on the 9th of August 2018 with a more acoustic performance entitled ‘Confidences around a piano’.

‘Les Foulées Gourmandes’ Run August From Langrune-sur-mer to Courseulles-sur-mer Information: www.lesfouleesgourmandes.fr Sport and gastronomy can go together! This fun run allows runners to explore the beaches of the Côte de Nacre and try regional products.

The 13km route alternates between dykes and beaches, passing through the towns of Langrune-sur-mer, Saint-Aubin-sur-mer, Bernières-sur-mer and Courseulles-sur-mer. Food supplies are available in the form of stops for sampling.
