LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Dear OETA Odyssey Reader,
As we transition into May, and keep a weather eye on the horizon for tornado season, OETA is proud to celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. We are also honored to mark a monumental milestone for one of public broadcasting’s most beloved figures. Gracing our cover this month is Sir David Attenborough, who celebrates his 100th birthday on May 8.
For decades, Sir David has been our guide to the wonders of the natural world, bringing the furthest reaches of the planet into our living rooms with his signature curiosity and grace. To celebrate a century of his remarkable life and work, we are dedicating our May programming to the best of natural history. From a special retrospective of his most iconic Nature and NOVA moments to the premiere of his latest exploration into the planet’s fragile ecosystems, this month is a tribute to the legacy of conservation and storytelling he has built.
Beyond the natural world, our May lineup continues to celebrate the depth of human experience. We are highlighting the stories of our America @ 250 series, which explores the foundations of our democracy as we approach our nation’s semi quincentennial (sem-ee-kwin-sen-ten-ee-uhl). Some of these premieres explore music, migration and community.
None of this is possible without you. Your support ensures that OETA remains a window to the world for all Oklahomans, from curious students to lifelong learners.
Thank you for joining us on this journey.
Sincerely,
Shawn Black Executive Director, OETA
VIEWER COMMENTS
We have supported OETA for many years, and will continue to do so!!! Our now-grown children were encouraged to learn, laugh, be kind, and many “good things” via public television as they attended school in Oklahoma.
Thank you for great programming and reliable news!! I want to support what you are doing!
Wishing our favorite TV station the very best in 2026. May your objective, unbiased reporting continue to elevate Oklahoma’s political conversations in the year ahead.
A Century of Wonder
CELEBRATING SIR DAVID ATTENBOROUGH AT 100
Sir David Attenborough turns 100 this year, and it’s hard to imagine anyone more deserving of a global celebration. For generations of viewers, including many right here in Oklahoma, his unmistakable voice has been a trusted guide to the natural world, bringing distant landscapes and extraordinary creatures into our living rooms through OETA and PBS.
Long before high-definition cameras and drones, Attenborough and his team set out on an ambitious journey that would change television forever. In 1976, they began filming Life on Earth, traveling to 40 countries over three years to document more than 600 species. Along the way, they faced challenges that sound almost unbelievable today, including political unrest, dangerous terrain, and even the threat of gunfire. Yet through it all, Attenborough remained focused on telling what he called the greatest story in the world, how life on our planet evolved.
The result was nothing short of groundbreaking. When Life on Earth aired on PBS in 1982, it captivated more than 500 million viewers worldwide and set a new standard for wildlife filmmaking. Many still remember the now-iconic scene of Attenborough sitting calmly among a family of mountain gorillas, a moment that forever changed how audiences connected with animals on screen. It wasn’t just a television program. It was an experience that inspired curiosity, wonder, and a deeper appreciation for the natural world.
For OETA viewers, Attenborough’s work has long been part of the fabric of public television. His documentaries have helped fulfill the mission of PBS to educate, inspire, and connect people of all ages. From classrooms to living rooms, his storytelling has sparked a lifelong love of learning and discovery.
Now, 50 years after that original journey began, PBS invites viewers to go behind the scenes with Life on Earth: Attenborough’s Greatest Adventure, premiering Wednesday, May 6. This new special offers a rare look at how the series was made, featuring exclusive interviews with Attenborough and the crew who helped bring it to life.
The celebration continues throughout May with more Attenborough favorites, including The Green Planet: Water Worlds on May 6, The Green Planet: Seasonal Worlds on May 13, Nature: Attenborough and the Sea Dragon on May 13 at 7 p.m., Nature: Attenborough’s Wonder of Song on May 20 at 7 p.m., The Green Planet: Desert Worlds on May 20, NOVA: Great Mammoth Mystery on May 27 at 8 p.m., and The Green Planet: Human Worlds on May 27 at 10 p.m.
Think Wednesday
Think Wednesday features a powerful series that offers a fresh and hopeful perspective on our planet. Shared Planet continues its season, exploring what happens when people and wildlife thrive together through inspiring stories from around the world.
Filmed in stunning 8K, the series takes viewers across continents, from grasslands and forests to oceans and cities, highlighting individuals finding innovative ways to live alongside nature. Each episode reveals how these efforts can support both communities and ecosystems.
On May 6, Open Spaces follows stories from Africa to Brazil, where people are rethinking how we live in grasslands and deserts, from protecting lions to supporting pollinators vital to agriculture. On May 13, Forests explores how communities are restoring habitats while sustaining livelihoods, from orangutan corridors in Borneo to forest conservation in Guatemala.
On May 20, Waters highlights hopeful solutions in oceans and rivers, where conservation efforts are helping wildlife and communities flourish together.
The month concludes May 27 with Secrets of the Dead: China’s Bronze Kingdom, uncovering a mysterious ancient civilization hidden for thousands of years.
Join us Wednesdays for stories that show what’s possible when we work with nature.
As the nation approaches its 250th anniversary, OETA’s America @ 250 initiative continues to explore the people, ideas and moments that define the American story. This May, viewers are invited to look deeper into the forces that shaped the nation and the voices that continue to shape its future.
The story of independence continues with The American Revolution – The Soul of All America on May 4 at 8 p.m., followed by The American Revolution –The Most Sacred Thing on May 5 at 8 p.m., tracing the fragile path from Valley Forge to a widening global conflict and a divided nation.
That same evening, Iconic America: Our Symbols and Stories with David Rubenstein – The Cowboy airs May 4 at 10 p.m., exploring one of the country’s most enduring and complex symbols. On May 5 at 10:11 p.m., 10 Homes That Changed America examines how the places we live reflect evolving ideas of identity, community and aspiration.
On May 18 at 10 p.m., Crossroads of a Nation: Missouri’s Rhythm, Roads & Roots highlights how music, migration and culture helped shape a uniquely American identity.
On May 19 at 8 p.m., American Masters: W.E.B. Du Bois – Rebel With a Cause honors a pioneering voice for civil rights and intellectual leadership whose work continues to resonate today.

Tulsa-based artist Tyler Thrasher is redefining what it means to create, blending chemistry, nature and curiosity into a body of work that is as scientific as it is artistic. Known for crystallizing plants and developing experimental pigments, Thrasher reveals the hidden beauty of the natural world through hands-on exploration and discovery.
This month, OETA’s Emmy Award-winning Gallery America, hosted by Jonathan Thompson, turns its focus to that intersection of art and science. The series, celebrated for highlighting Oklahoma’s creative voices, brings viewers inside Thrasher’s unconventional process and ever-evolving practice.
Don’t miss the premiere on Thursday, May 7, at 7 p.m. on OETA.
