This May we honor Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage and recognize Mental Health Awareness Month with our programming. Fanny: The Right to Rock highlights the engaging story of this pioneering, all-female, mostly Filipina American rock band from the ‘70s and airs Monday, May 22 at 9 p.m. Another pioneer of his time, Nam June Paik, is considered the father of video art and envisioned the creation of the internet. See the world through his eyes that transcended the reality of his own time in American Masters: Nam June Paik—Moon is the Oldest TV on Tuesday, May 16 at 9 p.m.
Go deeper with NOVA: Your Brain—Perception Deception, which provides a stunning visual reminder that our perception has the ability to change our reality, for better or worse, airing Wednesday, May 17 at 8 p.m. For a poignant look into how two brothers were impacted by abandonment, Independent Lens: Sam Now covers their personal search for their mother and the decades-long journey they must embark on in order to heal and find peace within themselves. Sam Now airs Monday, May 8 at 9 p.m. Refresh your mind by taking in the clear skies and deep waters around the Fjord coastlines of Norway, which are featured in Wild Scandinavia, a 3-part series beginning Wednesday, May 10 at 7 p.m. This May we also celebrate life with the National Memorial Day Concert beginning at 7 p.m. on Sunday, May 28. Furthermore, for our Anglophiles, you won’t want to miss our British coronation coverage of King Charles III beginning Saturday, May 6.
To our members, we thank you for your support of our programming, which aims to inspire and inform. If you or anyone you know is struggling with mental wellness, consider using or sharing the 988 Crisis Hotline below.
These upcoming Independent Lens specials explore health and wellness topics, including mental health, generational trauma, living with chronic illness, and promoting a greater understanding and awareness.
Matter of Mind is a touching story about ALS. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neuromuscular disease with an average survival time of 2-5 years from diagnosis. In this intimate exploration, three people with ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease, bravely face different paths as they live with this progressively debilitating illness. Matter of Mind: My ALS premieres Monday, May 1 at 9:00 pm.
Sam Now is a coming-of-age documentary that follows Sam Harkness from age 11 to 36 as his once-average, middle class Seattle family is heartbroken and unsure of what to do after his mother suddenly leaves them. Through Sam’s 25 year quest for answers, the film explores intergenerational trauma and the relationships of mother to son, mother to family, brother to brother and the turning points of family dysfunction and healing. Woven together with home movies lovingly crafted by Sam’s half brother, we witness a boy who grows up grappling with the ripple effects of a singular traumatic event. Sam Now premieres Monday, May 8 at 9:00 pm.
Our last film is an autobiographical exploration of survivorship. New Orleans journalist and filmmaker Jasmín Mara López unabashedly shares her process of healing from childhood sexual abuse. After Jasmín discloses to her family she’d been abused by her grandfather, she liberates others to come forward in a story of confronting a culture of silence over generational trauma. Silent Beauty premieres Monday, May 15 at 9:00 pm.

Immerse yourself in three iconic Scandinavian landscapes: the hauntingly beautiful coast; the magical seasonal forests, and the volcanic and arctic extremes. Surprising wildlife stories of lynx and puffins, orca and wolves reveal the resilient spirit of Scandinavia.
Born in Japan-occupied Korea, Paik studied as a classical musician before moving to Germany in the 1950s. Forever changed after encountering avant-garde composer John Cage, Paik became a member of the influential experimental art movement Fluxus, which created new forms of art and performance. Eventually immigrating to the United States, he became fully engaged with television and video art in a way that would revolutionize how the world thinks of image-making in the electronic age. American Masters: Nam June Paik - Moon is the Oldest TV premieres Tuesday, May 16 at 9:00 pm.
Sometime in the 1960s, in sunny Sacramento, two Filipina-American sisters got together with other teenage girls to play music. Little did they know their garage band would evolve into the legendary rock group Fanny, the first all-women band to release an LP with a major record label (Warner/Reprise, 1970). Despite releasing 5 critically-acclaimed albums over 5 years, touring with famed bands from SLADE to CHICAGO and amassing a dedicated fan base of music legends including David Bowie, Fanny’s groundbreaking impact in music was written out of history... until bandmates reunite 50 years later with a new rock record deal. With incredible archival footage of the band’s rocking past intercut with its next chapter releasing a new LP today, the film includes interviews with a large cadre of music icons. Fighting early barriers of race, gender and sexuality in the music industry, and now ageism, the incredible women of Fanny are ready to claim their hallowed place in the halls of rock ‘n’ roll fame. Fanny: The Right to Rock premieres Monday, May 22 at 9:00 pm.
The father of video art and coiner of the term “electronic superhighway,” Nam June Paik was one of the most influential artists of the 20th century.
