LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Dear OETA Odyssey Reader,

Welcome to the expanded March edition of Odyssey. As we embrace this season of renewal, OETA is proud to offer a lineup that explores history, nature, and the human spirit.

March marks our Live Pledge season, a vital time for the community to support the educational mission of public television. This month, we are especially proud to announce that OETA is reinstating Festival Live Pledge, bringing back a beloved tradition of live, in-studio fundraising that connects us directly with you. We will have six nights of live pledge (March 4, 5, 9, 10, and 12). Special programming includes “Wild for Wednesday Night” on March 4, featuring Nature: Parenthood and a NOVA investigation into canine communication. On March 9, we will have a VIP night that features Oklahoma Legislators and Friends of OETA Board members. On March 12, the live pledge nights conclude with Oklahoma’s Nazi Prisoners.

Our drama lineup remains strong with the premiere of The Forsytes on MASTERPIECE. Airing Sunday, March 22, at 8 p.m., this lavish adaptation anchors a night of grand drama alongside the return of Call the Midwife and a new adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo.

Finally, we present a new three-part documentary, Henry David Thoreau, starting March 30. Narrated by George Clooney, this series offers a nuanced portrait of the thinker who shaped American views on nature and individual conscience.

Thank you for your continued support, which keeps OETA thriving across Oklahoma.

Sincerely,

VIEWER COMMENTS

I’m a big fan of OETA, and without you, there would be very little worthwhile viewing.

I continue to provide support for OETA and am glad the station is not impacted by the shutdown of Congressional funding. Keep up the good work.

I’m glad we have OETA in Oklahoma, you provide an important and needed service!

DramaS SUNDAY

Corsets, Cradles, and Conspiracies: OETA Curates a Night of Grand Drama

On Sunday, March 22, OETA’s transforms the living room into a grand salon of history, romance, and reinvention. Three lavish dramas, three eras in upheaval, and one perfectly choreographed evening of television.

At 7 p.m., Call the Midwife returns with Season 15, ushering its beloved nurses and nuns into 1971, a year when Britain stood at the crossroads of social revolution and scientific promise. The Women’s Liberation movement was reshaping ideas of work, motherhood, and autonomy, while medicine itself was entering a bold new age. Ultrasound technology, once experimental, now revealed unborn life in ghostly silhouettes. Premature infants survived with the help of humming incubators. Epidurals promised to rewrite the story of childbirth pain.

Yet Poplar’s real drama remains intimate. Hands clasped through labor, quiet courage in hospital corridors, and the enduring grace of characters portrayed by Jenny Agutter, Judy Parfitt, Stephen McGann, Helen George, Cliff Parisi, and Laura Main, many of whom have been with the series since its inception. Few shows wear time as elegantly.

At 8 p.m., MASTERPIECE unveils The Forsytes, a sumptuous adaptation of John Galsworthy’s novels set in 1880s London, when fortunes were minted on the stock exchange and respectability was guarded like a family heirloom. The series explores a society obsessed with possession of wealth, of wives, of status itself. Historically, the era marked a paradox. Married women were legally subordinate to their husbands, yet financial reform was quietly underway. By the end of the century, women held a quarter of stock market shares, reshaping the very economy that constrained them.

The drama’s tension mirrors that contradiction. Romance collides with ambition, inheritance with desire. With Francesca Annis, Stephen Moyer, Jack Davenport, Tuppence Middleton, Eleanor Tomlinson, and Millie Gibson, the ensemble brings Gilded Age anxieties into sharp, glittering focus. Corsets tightened by class, and hearts undone by love.

At 9 p.m., The Count of Monte Cristo arrives in resplendent style. Sam Claflin stars as Edmond Dantès, a sailor wrongfully imprisoned who escapes and reemerges as a man of immense wealth and meticulously plotted vengeance. Though often mistaken for pure romantic fantasy, Alexandre Dumas’ tale was shaped by real injustice. The author drew from the true story of Francois Picaud, a man falsely jailed and methodical in revenge, and from the imprisonment of Dumas’ own father, a French general whose rivalry with Napoleon ended behind stone walls.

Filmed across France, Italy, and Malta, the new adaptation luxuriates in Mediterranean light and shadow, a visual reminder that revenge, like power, requires patience, precision, and an impeccable wardrobe.

Three centuries. Three kinds of rebellion.

On Sunday, March 22, OETA’s Sunday Dramas curate history, one beautifully costumed crisis at a time.

Think Wednesday

The month begins March 4 with a special Live Pledge edition of Wild for Wednesday Night. Nature: Parenthood – The Greatest Adventure (Part 5) reveals how animal parents prepare their young for survival, from lionesses teaching cubs to confront massive buffalo to burrowing owls building underground nurseries and mimicking rattlesnakes to ward off danger. NOVA follows with Can Dogs Talk?, exploring the viral word-button phenomenon through the largest animal communication study ever conducted. By analyzing millions of button presses from dogs worldwide, scientists investigate whether pets are truly learning language or responding through sophisticated conditioning.

On March 11, Live Pledge Night continues with The Mustangs: America’s Wild Horses. Executive produced by Robert Redford and featuring music by Bruce Springsteen, Emmylou Harris, and Willie Nelson, the film examines how a symbol of freedom has become entangled in politics and environmental debate, with nearly 80,000 horses roaming public lands and tens of thousands more in government holding facilities. NOVA turns to space with The Planets: Mars, tracing how a once watery world became a frozen desert, followed by

The Planets: Jupiter, revealing how the solar system’s largest planet shaped Earth’s destiny and continues to influence moons and asteroids.

March 18 highlights Nature: Portugal – Wild Land on the Edge, where wild horses, monk seals, giant waves, migrating birds, and even wolf spiders illustrate a country shaped by both geography and history. NOVA’s Why Ships Crash investigates modern maritime disasters and the risks facing global trade. Secrets of the Dead: The Sunken Basilica uncovers a submerged fourth-century church in Turkey that could rewrite our understanding of early Christianity.

The month concludes March 25 with Nature: Raptors – A Fistful of Daggers, (Part 1), a striking look at birds of prey and their deadly adaptations. NOVA’s Baltimore Bridge Collapse examines the Morandi Bridge disaster and new engineering solutions, while Secrets of the Dead: King Arthur’s Lost Kingdom explores whether Tintagel holds evidence behind Britain’s most enduring legend.

From animal intelligence to ancient ruins, Think Wednesday makes March a destination for curious minds.

Henry David Thoreau is often remembered as the solitary figure at Walden Pond, a symbol of simplicity and reflection. In a new threepart documentary, Henry David Thoreau, offers a broader and more nuanced portrait of the writer and thinker whose work has shaped American literature and philosophy. The series airs Monday, March 30th at 8 pm (Parts 1 and 2) and concludes Tuesday, March 31st at 8 pm (Part 3).

Executive produced by Ken Burns and Don Henley and directed by Erik Ewers and Christopher Loren Ewers, the documentary examines Thoreau’s life and work within the context of antebellum New England and a rapidly changing United States. Best known for Walden and “Civil Disobedience,” Thoreau explored enduring questions about how to live an authentic life, humanity’s relationship with nature, and the responsibilities of the individual within society.

Narrated by George Clooney, the film features Jeff Goldblum as the voice of Thoreau, with additional voices by Ted Danson, Tate Donovan, and Meryl Streep.

Drawing on archival materials, newly filmed cinematography, and interviews with historians, writers, and environmental scholars, the series places Thoreau among

the vibrant intellectual community of 19thcentury Concord, alongside figures such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Margaret Fuller, and Frederick Douglass.

Rather than presenting Thoreau as a distant symbol, the documentary portrays him as a complex individual shaped by the social and scientific currents of his time. It traces his journey from his early years in Massachusetts through his engagement with the moral questions raised by industrial growth, war, and slavery. The film also explores the Transcendentalist movement, which emphasized self-reliance, spiritual reflection, and the importance of living deliberately.

By situating Thoreau’s ideas within both his own century and the wider arc of American history, the film offers a deeper understanding of why his writings continue to be read and debated today. His reflections on nature, conscience, and human purpose remain central to conversations about citizenship and personal responsibility.

Watch Henry David Thoreau on OETA beginning March 30, 2026, and discover a richly detailed portrait of the writer whose words continue to shape American thought.

FESTIVAL IS BACK!

For the first time since 2019, OETA is bringing back Festival (Live Pledge), and we’re inviting our community partners to be part of it.

This spring, OETA will return to live, on-air pledge nights, where real people answer phones, talk with viewers, and help keep public television strong in Oklahoma. These evenings are fun, fast-paced, and incredibly meaningful, and they only work because of volunteers like you.

Volunteer shifts include:

• Dinner with the OETA team

• A brief training on how to take pledge calls

• Up to three hours answering phones and encouraging viewer support

• The opportunity to speak briefly on air

• Company signage at each phone station

• Volunteers may wear branded apparel

Live Pledge Nights in March

• March 4

• March 5

• March 11

• March 12

This is a great team-building opportunity and a powerful way to support local public television.

We will also host additional Live Pledge Festival nights in early summer, between Saturday, May 30 and Sunday, June 7. If your organization, business, or civic group would like to volunteer for one of these nights, we would love to hear from you.

Contact sray@oeta.tv to learn more and reserve a night for your group.
