A NOTE FROM POLLY
As we embrace the spirit of our great state and the diverse stories that shape it, we at OETA are thrilled to present an engaging lineup of shows for June that celebrates Oklahoma’s rich history and cultural tapestry.
Kicking off the month on Thursday, June 6 at 7 p.m., ONR’s “Black Frontier Towns” sheds light on the fascinating creation of historically Black towns in Oklahoma, offering insight into their significance and impact, past and present. Then, on Thursday, June 27 at 7:30 p.m., join us for “The People’s House: The Story of the Oklahoma State Capitol,” an exploration of the iconic symbol of our state’s governance.
Continuing our exploration of American heritage, “Iconic America: Our Symbols and Stories” airs on Friday, June 21 at 9:00 p.m., delving into the enduring symbols that define our nation. Following this at 10 p.m., “Roots of Comedy with Jesus Trejo” takes us on a journey through family stories and cultural backgrounds of comedians, offering a more family-centered perspective on their craft. And don’t miss “Finding Your Roots: Viewers Like You” on Tuesday, June 25 at 7 p.m., as Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. uncovers the remarkable legacies of everyday Americans.
The most impactful show for me was the American Buffalo series. It touched my heart.
I love the Masterpiece programs and watch as many as I can. I watch ones I have never seen on Passport.
Finally, mark your calendars for Sunday, June 16th on Father’s Day, when we premiere new seasons of beloved crime-solving dramas including the germophobic “Professor T” behind bars, a new vicar in “Grantchester,” and the gripping cases in “D.I. Ray.”
Truly, your generous support makes it possible for OETA to bring these compelling stories into homes across Oklahoma. Thank you for being a vital part of our OETA community!

The Black Frontier Towns of Oklahoma represent a significant chapter in African American history, showcasing the resilience, entrepreneurship, and community-building efforts of Black settlers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These towns emerged during a period of significant social and political change in the United States, marked by the end of Reconstruction, the expansion of Jim Crow laws, and the promise of land opportunities in the West.
One of the most renowned Black frontier towns in Oklahoma is Langston. Established in 1890,

Langston was named after John Mercer Langston, an influential African American leader. It served as an allBlack community and later became the home of Langston University, one of the oldest HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) in the nation. Langston University played a vital role in educating Black students and fostering a sense of pride and empowerment within the community.
Boley is another notable Black town founded in 1903. It quickly flourished into one of the largest and most prosperous Black towns in America. Boley boasted a thriving economy

supported by Black-owned businesses, banks, schools, and social institutions. The town’s success attracted national attention and made it a symbol of Black economic empowerment and self-sufficiency.
Other Black frontier towns in Oklahoma include Clearview, Taft, and Rentiesville, each with its unique story and contributions to African American history. These towns provided refuge and opportunity for Black families seeking to escape racial discrimination and oppression in the South. They fostered a sense of community, solidarity, and cultural pride among residents.
Despite facing challenges such as segregation, racial violence, and economic disparities, the Black frontier towns of Oklahoma persevered. They exemplified the spirit of resilience and determination that characterized many Black communities during this period. Today, these towns serve as important landmarks and reminders of the African American journey toward freedom, equality, and empowerment in the United States.
There are 13 remaining historically black towns in Oklahoma. And OETA’s Black Frontier Towns series profiles each of these towns to give you a perspective on their past, present, and future.
OETA will feature a pledge special in June. Consider making a donation to receive the limited-edition Black Frontier Towns tote bag or a DVD of the entire program series. When you give $15 a month, you can get both! DONATE $15 A MONTH TO RECEIVE THESE EXCLUSIVE THANK YOU GIFTS!

The People's House
The Story Of The Oklahoma State Capitol
This short documentary examines the rich history and significance of the State Capitol building. Detailing its controversial relocation from Guthrie to Oklahoma City, the completion of the original structure and subsequent growth around it, the dome’s construction in 2000, and the newly completed eight-year restoration project in 2022, the film showcases more than a century of storied history. The documentary features a spectacular four-minute drone tour of the Capitol with glimpses of the House floor, Senate floor, and Oklahoma Supreme Court, providing rare views of the building’s interior and exterior. Interviewees include Trait
Thompson, executive director of the OHS, former project manager for the Oklahoma Capitol Restoration Project, and author of The Oklahoma State Capitol; Dr. Bob Blackburn, former executive director of the OHS; former governors including George Nigh and Frank Keating; and Marilyn Luper Hildreth, daughter of Civil Rights leader Clara Luper. The piece is narrated by John Erling, a former Tulsa radio host inducted into the Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame and the founder of the Voices of Oklahoma project.
