Starrett tells Shane that a war of intimidation is being waged on the valley’s settlers.

A NOTE FROM POLLY This February, OETA presents a compelling lineup of programs in honor of Black History Month. Kicking off the month on Thursday, February 1 at 7:30 p.m. is “Lines Broken: The Story of Marion Motley.” This documentary sheds light on the remarkably talented Marion Motley, an African American football player who overcame racial barriers to become a trailblazer in the NFL. OETA is airing the all-new four-part series “Gospel” on Monday, February 12 and Tuesday, February 13 at 8 p.m. This mini-series, hosted by Professor and pioneer Henry Louis Gates, Jr., delves into the rich history and impact of gospel music, exploring its cultural roots and social significance in America.

From the haunting events of the Tulsa Race Massacre to the unsung triumphs of the Tennessee A&I Tigers and the inspiring tale of the Pullman Porters and Maids, these narratives shed light on the resilience, triumphs, and struggles of Black communities throughout the nation. OETA and PBS, through their commitment to uncovering hidden narratives, invites viewers to explore these untold stories that have shaped the tapestry of American history. As we commemorate the resilience, achievements, and challenges faced by Black communities, these documentaries serve as a poignant reminder of the importance of acknowledging and understanding the past to build a more inclusive and equitable future.

The Dream Whisperer: The Tennessee A&I Tigers’ Legacy

Tuesday February 2 at 9:00 p.m.

In 1864, George Pullman revolutionized overnight train travel with his luxury sleeping cars, served by a workforce of former slaves known as Pullman Porters and Maids. However, when the benefits of his success failed to reach those who built, operated, and staffed his cars, a rebellion erupted.

“Chicago Stories: Pullman and the Railroad Rebellion” narrates the powerful story of Black workers who, despite an initial setback, found success through organizing. This success paved the way for the emergence of a Black middle class and fueled a civil rights movement that forever altered the course of American history.

In the era of segregation, the Tennessee A&I Tigers achieved a remarkable feat by becoming the first collegiate basketball team to secure three consecutive national championships.

Shockingly, their historic accomplishment remained unrecognized. Enter the legendary Dick Barnett, team captain and future Knicks player, who embarked on a nine-year quest to immortalize his team. “The Dream Whisperer” chronicles the triumphs and struggles of this all-Black team from a small, historically Black college, shedding light on their incredible journey and how, six decades later, Barnett ensured their legacy would not be forgotten.

Chicago Stories: Pullman and the Railroad Rebellion

Tuesday February 2 at 11:00 p.m.

From the blues to hip hop, African Americans have been the driving force of sonic innovation for over a century. Musical styles come and go, but there’s one sound that has been a constant source of strength, courage and wisdom from the pulpit to the choir lofts on any given Sunday.

GOSPEL, the latest history series from Henry Louis Gates, Jr., digs deep into the origin story of Black spirituality through sermon and song.

Episode subjects include: The Gospel Train (the sonic influences of blues and jazz), The Golden Age Of Gospel (from the Lord’s music to the mainstream), Take The Message Everywhere (gospel goes mainstream, taking the good news everywhere), and Gospel’s Second Century (gospel and preaching achieve platinum-selling success).

Beginning Sunday, February 4, GOSPEL, the fourpart series from Henry Louis Gates, Jr., will be available to stream with OETA Passport.

Tulsa Race Massacre: A Journey Through Time:

Tuesday February 6 at 10:00 p.m.

Black frontier towns in Oklahoma emerged during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, defying racial segregation. Communities like Boley, Clearview, and Langston thrived with Black-owned businesses, schools, and cultural institutions. These towns represented economic and social autonomy for African Americans, providing opportunities for entrepreneurship and education. Despite challenges, these vibrant communities stood as symbols of resilience, challenging racial norms, and contributing significantly to the cultural tapestry of Oklahoma’s history.

The Greenwood District, once home to the prosperous Black Wall Street, faced a tragedy that was concealed for 75 years—the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921. OETA, through our hour-long original documentary “Tulsa Race Massacre: 100 Years Later,” intricately weaves historical accounts with the artistry of local creatives to unveil the full spectrum of Greenwood’s past, present, and the aspirations of a thriving future. Unmasking the impact of redlining policies and the construction of a highway that perpetuated the destruction of this community, this documentary sheds light on the tragedy.

Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth was raised in the crucible of segregated Birmingham but he was forged by its attempt to kill him. When the KKK planted a bomb underneath his bed and he emerged unharmed, he was sure he was saved by God to lead a Movement. His work not only ended legal segregation but lead directly to the Civil and Voting Rights Acts - and inspired freedom movements around the world.

Independent Lens: Sister Una Lived A Good Death Monday, February 5 • 9:30 p.m.

Following a cancer diagnosis, Sister Úna—a mischievous, rule-breaking Catholic nun dedicated to social justice—chooses to live as she’s dying. In this touching end-of-life documentary, the self-proclaimed “leader of the misfits” plans her funeral in her last nine months to live.

Gospel Live!

Friday, February 9 • 9:00 p.m.

Dig deep into the origin story of Black gospel music, coming out of slavery, blending with the blues tradition, and soaring to new heights during the Great Migration. From Mahalia to Kirk Franklin, in the last century, gospel music has become the dominant form of African American religious expression and provided a soundtrack of healing and uplift to those at the front lines of protest and change.

Nature: Patrick And The Whale

For years, Patrick Dykstra has traveled the globe following and diving with whales, learning how whales see, hear and perceive other creatures in the water. In Dominica, Patrick has a life changing experience – a close encounter with a sperm whale he names “Delores.” Witness Patrick and the whale attempt to communicate with each other in extraordinary footage.

In February, Gallery America takes an antiques roadtrip around Oklahoma to explore the art of collecting and interior design from local collectors, restorers and furniture-flippers. First up is Daniel Mathis, aka “Not a Minimalist,” a by-day lawyer who’s won a big Instagram following for his vast, unique collection of fascinating objects in his Oklahoma City home. Then we go to Purcell’s Main Street Vintage, a new antiques shop on the town’s Main Street run by Clinton Avery Tharp, a musician and furniture fan. He’s a furniture-flipper, who restores finds found in thrift stores and estate sales. He shares his method as well as advice at how others can do what he does. The episode also uncovers the difference between “antique” and “vintage” at Oklahoma City’s 23rd Street Antiques, and goes behind-thescenes at a Tulsa estate sale. On Monday, February 5, 2024, the Oklahoma Educational Television Authority (OETA) will provide all broadcast television media in the state of Oklahoma with a video pool feed of Governor Kevin Stitt annual state of the State Address. The live broadcast from the chambers of the Oklahoma House of Representatives will begin at 12:30 p.m. and end at approximately 1:30 p.m. Governor Kevin Stitt is expected to begin his address at about 12:45 p.m.
