A NOTE FROM POLLY
This August OETA brings into focus the stuff of legends and their unique but lasting impact on our world. Whether serious, mysterious, or funny, some people, places and things are never meant to be forgotten. OETA explores some of these defining moments that have, in their own way, brought more meaning into our lives both past and present.
On Tuesday, August 27 at 8 p.m., “American Masters” presents “Blake Edwards: A Love Story In 24 Frames,” celebrating the legendary Hollywood master of slapstick comedy and his beloved partnership with Julie Andrews. Stay tuned at 9:30 p.m. for Julie Andrews’ feature in “Beyond the Canvas,” highlighting her storied career.
For our literary buffs, dig into a controversial debate surrounding The Odyssey, which has often been coined “one of the greatest stories ever told.” In “Odysseus Returns” on Wednesday, August 28 at 8 p.m., an archaeological dig reveals ancient human bones believed to belong to the hero of Homer’s epic poem.
Supporting public television in Oklahoma is one of the best things a person can do to insure we have a true reporting of the world and Oklahoma.
I just really appreciate knowing that I can open up OETA and always find quality, entertaining programs.
Arguably one of the greatest success stories of America is the right to vote. And thank you to all our donors who make it possible for us to bring you these fascinating, impactful stories to our state!
Executive Director, OETA
The legendary tale of Odysseus, the hero of Homer’s epic poems, has long fascinated scholars and explorers. For centuries, they have scoured the Greek islands seeking tangible evidence linking to the mythical king of Ithaca. The documentary “Odysseus Returns” explores one of the most captivating archaeological discoveries of modern times, shedding light on a find that has sparked excitement and debate within the academic community.
The journey begins in 1991 on the island of Kefalonia, where Makis Metaxas, a proud Kefalonian, shopkeeper, mayor, and amateur archaeologist, made a groundbreaking discovery. He unearthed a 3,000-year-old tomb in the island’s rugged terrain containing an artifact many believe belonged to King Odysseus. This revelation left experts astonished and ignited controversy.
The artifact, a copper brooch bearing Mycenaean symbols and craftsmanship, quickly made headlines. It raised hopes that the tomb might be the final resting place of the Homeric hero. However, the story of “Odysseus Returns” is not just one of discovery but also of intense scholarly debate. The documentary delves into the conflicting perspectives of archaeologists, historians, and academics who have scrutinized the find. Some herald the discovery as groundbreaking evidence of Odysseus’ historical existence, while others argue that the evidence is circumstantial and lacks definitive proof.
“Odysseus Returns” offers a rare glimpse into ancient Greece, the allure of Homeric epics, and the modern quest to understand our past. Through stunning visuals, expert testimonies, and a gripping storyline, the documentary captures the imagination and invites viewers to ponder the mysteries of history.
Premieres Wednesday, August 28 at 8:00 p.m.
THE TZANNATA TOMB
The Tzannata Tomb is a remarkable feat of engineering from the Mycenaean period. Its distinctive beehive shape measures an impressive 22.3 feet in diameter and nearly 13 feet in height. Constructed using massive, chiseled stone blocks, the tomb was meticulously crafted into the hillside, with a wide entryway known as a dromos leading into its heart.
Inside the tomb, the deceased were laid to rest in a unique arrangement, underground and stacked upon one another, suggesting that the individuals were part of a closely related kin group, a hypothesis supported by modern DNA testing techniques.
POETRY VERSUS GEOGRAPHY: THE QUEST FOR HOMERIC ITHACA
For over three decades, a heated dispute has raged between the islands of Ithaca and Kefalonia over the true location of Homeric Ithaca, immortalized in the epic tales of Homer’s “Odyssey” .
Homer, revered as one of history’s greatest poets rather than a precise geographer, imbued his epic with poetic license, weaving a narrative that blends myth and reality. In The Odyssey, Odysseus, after years of wandering, finally returns home to Ithaca, shrouded in mist until Athena reveals familiar landmarks, including the prominent Mt. Neriton.
For modern-day Ithaca, a small island reliant on tourism, the identification of Homeric Ithaca is more than an intellectual pursuit—it’s a matter of economic survival. Tourists flock to Ithaca, inspired by the allure of retracing Odysseus’ legendary journey, bringing vital revenue to the island’s economy. Conversely, Kefalonia, with its larger size and resources, stands as a formidable contender in the dispute, bolstered by archaeological findings and interpretive insights.
