Strong fluids for your application

Whether for roughing work or use in ultrafine finishing – the dielectric has to satisfy the very specific requirements for every application. The high-performance dielectrics from oelheld are made from synthetic base oils and contain discharge-intensifying and wearreducing additives and ageing inhibitors for

use in electric discharge machining (EDM).

By contrast with the conventional mineral oil products, the high-purity synthesis products enriched with the oelheld-patented satellite electrodes from the IonoPlus® series are manufactured in a special blending process.

The dielectrics from oelheld have been tested in extensive series of trials and have proved to be effective in practice for decades. Leading manufacturers of erosion discharge machines and filters expressly recommend our grades.

The dielectrics have very high disruptive strength, are as clear as water (exept IonoPlus®) and practically odourless. Furthermore, they achieve the degree of purity of pharmaceutical white oils and are more or less free of aromatics.

EcoSpark 105 As can be seen from the diagram above, more regular ignitions per unit of time can be achieved by changing the dielectric from IME to IonoPlus®. That means more discharges and hence shorter discharge times. The secret are the satellite electrodes distributed in the fluid that create a faster discharge bridge that produces an effectiv spark channel.

All oelheld dielectrics have been classified by the Research and Materials Institute Baden- Württemberg as representing no health hazard in their operational safety and industrial hygiene.

Semi synthetic oils (EDM) A semi synthetic (Hydrocrack) dielectric oil for EDM. EcoSpark offers an excellent performance / cost ratio for the production environment where high fluid loses due to frequent component & filter changes occur whilst maintaining a high safety level in terms of flashpoint and user protection.

The new age of wire-cutting EDM Following on the experience and success with its dielectrics in the field of electrical discharge machining (EDM), oelheld has now set itself new targets. Whereas high-quality hydrocarbons have been successfully used for decades in cavity-sinking EDM, water is still used in wire EDM – and that despite the numerous associated disadvantages.

Particularly when machining carbide metal, cobalt leaching and hence also corrosion present a problem that is difficult to overcome. That is why oelheld together with leading companies in the EDM field and the University of Louvain (Belgium) decided to set up a research project to develop a hydrocarbon-based dielectric that is designed specifically for the wire EDM technology.

The result is IonoFil.

The service lives of carbide punches, in particular, can be enormously prolonged by preventing cobalt leaching. Laborious and cost-intensive deionisation of the water with resins, corrosion protection – before, during and after machining – and frequent changing of the medium are now things of the past thanks to this development. IonoFil as dielectric allows smaller spark gaps to be used, thus permitting far better precision machining, e.g. with closer radii. The quality of the surfaces increases to the same extent, with peak-to-valley roughnesses of down to Ra 0.1 µm being achieved far faster and easier than with water.

A convincing argument, particularly at a time when the industry is making ever higher quality demands on its suppliers and on the manufactured parts.

AirForge - Glass Coating ®

AirForge - High elasticity of the lubricant film Because of an exceptionally high elasticity of the lubricating film, AirForge provides optimal imaging accuracy, also for areas that are very sensitive and difficulty to access.

Our goal was to develop a protective lubricating glass coating for each specific forging temperature that ensures optimal material flow over the entire forging process when using different materials such as titanand nickel based and steel alloys. no gas diffusion

Thereby the AirForge glass coating surrounds the casting (billet) and prevents it from hot gas corrosion and hydrogen diffusion. In addition, an optimal material flow during the entire forging process is guaranteed because of its good thermal insulation properties.

Filtration – Why Bother?

For many years machine tools have been supplied with only basic filtration systems and some with no filtration at all so why bother spending money on non-productive equipment?

What’s changed?

Firstly, consider the function of today’s modern CNC equipment compared to 20 years ago. Manufacturers have spent those 2 decades improving productivity by adding robots, speeding up axis movement and improving cutting technology all of which results in more debris, a lot more debris!

Secondly, advances in cutting fluid technology mean that its contribution to machine performance is far greater than ever before. Viscosity stabilizers, detergent additives, lubricity modifiers work together with state of the art synthetic base oils to greatly increase the performance of your multi million-pound investments and all these gains are quickly reversed if the fluid is not maintained in its ‘as new’ condition.

Vomat Filtration Systems

Luckily, filtration technology has moved on with the times too, manual paper band systems (that operators never advanced) and old centrifuge type systems (that use so much energy to remove so little debris) are a thing of the past. Replacing them are more modern filter techniques such as pleated paper media with high dirt holding capacities, hydro cyclones that filter with no moving parts and self-cleaning filter systems with filter elements that last for years without needing any maintenance. When these systems are specified, installed and maintained properly they will look after your machine and the cutting fluid ensuring productivity and quality, even during unattended operation.

In addition to detrimental effect of dirty fluids on machine performance is the far more important factor of employee health.

It has been known for some time that adverse skin reactions to many fluids are actually caused by small particles in the fluid that irritate the pores of the skin. This leads to inflammation and infection which in turns allows the fluid to penetrate deeper into the skin exacerbating the issue even further.

TRANSOR Compact Filter TCF The Edge Filter Principle TRANSOR Units work on basis of the edge filter principle. Contaminations in grinding oils are captured on the surface of several thousands of special filter discs, which are stacked spring loaded on top of each other. Unlike in other systems no consumable filter media is utilized. Maintenance and operating costs are reduced to the absolute minimum. The self cleaning (back flushing) of the filters is initiated fully automatic. The removed material (sludge) is discharged by various methods either manually or automatically.

Based on more than 25 years user specific experience the concept consequently was advanced further. The newly developed TRANSOR Compact Filter TCF utilizes edge filter elements with a unique multi channel geometry. This enables the construction of small and compact systems and lower operative filter volumes at higher flow rates. Along with high filtration degrees the TCF system also offers long lifetime cycles of the elements.

TRANSOR – Filtration without compromise With the new TCF series TRANSOR again revolutionizes the fine filtration of metal working coolants, especially grinding oils. Coolants have to be filtered to a high degree in order to permanently fulfil their important functions in the machining process. High precision machining like grinding, honing or EDM require utmost cleanliness of the coolants, to achieve work results like better surfaces, closer tolerances, superior surface finish, less wear and cleaner environment. TRANSOR TCF-filter systems safeguard the reliable supply of fine filtered and temperature controlled clean oil to the machines.

This is achieved with fully automatic systems on small "foot print areas" with minimum service and maintenance requirements.

The TCF series of filter systems are fully automatic media free working units for the fine filtration of low viscosity metal working oils. Beyond other processes they are utilized in the production and re-grinding of all kinds of carbide tools. The filtered material can be discharged by various optional methods and can be either sold or recycled.

Filter capacity The modular construction, a big clean oil storage capacity and the reduced self cleaning time enable uninterrupted, continuous and reliable supply of coolant to the machine

TCF-technic The heart of the system The newly developed elements are based on a multi channel geometry and operate without consumable filter media. Filtration efficiency of 3gm nominal and a life time of several years are achieved. This means less maintenance and disposal costs. The low pressure filtration method ensures highest flow rates on smallest foot print areas.

The TCF element housings do not require pressure test procedures acc. to pressure vessel regulations and codes.

Cartridge Separator for Dust Extraction After previous impact separation, the predominantly dry dusts form a filter cake on the cartridge (8). By backpressure this is cleaned and thus ensures long service life. In problematic applications microfilter (7) can be followed.

Heat Recovering System For material separation, only cross-flow heat exchangers (9) are used. The outside air (10) is heated in the heat exchanger by the waste heat of the purified air of the filter system (11).

Optional heating and cooling coils (9) provide ideal air conditioning. The filter stages (12) protect i.a. from pollens and dusts in the fresh air. As a rule, our systems are only equipped with a supply air fan (13); the exhaust air is taken over by the fan of the filter system.

System 9000K pallets can be loaded manually or automatically using a pneumatically controlled gripper transport system or a pick & place loader like the HIRSCHMANN EROBOT or six axis robots. The automated loading of machine tools can easily achieve 24/7 versatility. A solution to some of these problems can be found in EDM Grinding, a technique that imparts no forces onto the component so geometrically accurate contours are easily produced even on the smallest parts.
