EX RUGBY INTERNATIONAL KICKS HAIR LOSS INTO TOUCH AT GORDONS CHEMISTS Former international rugby star and Dancing On Ice champion Kyran Bracken MBE visited Gordons Chemists this week to share how Viviscal has transformed his insecurity about hair loss. Kyran says he was under stress as a sportsman which he feels attributed to his hair loss around the age of 25. Nicknames such as Kojak and Cat Flap didn’t make losing his hair easy as he says: “I was paranoid about my hair loss.” He had a transplant in 2006 which worked to a certain extent but now he uses Viviscal Hair Loss Concealer Fibres which he describe as “pepper on your head” to make it look fuller. He says that hair loss is the one thing that “still makes me feel insecure about myself in terms of how I look. It’s something that’s constantly on my mind.” Kyran thinks that it has become more acceptable for men to use cosmetics and treatments to improve their looks. He said: “A lot of men in the public eye, for example Wayne Rooney, are not as embarrassed to admit they have had a transplant, as they would have been a few years ago. They’re happy to accept that yes, I want to do something about my hair loss. I think hair loss is the biggest hurdle most men have in their mid twenties (or sometimes before) – single or not single. Having hair maintains the way men look and feel and hair loss, certainly for me, was the biggest physical problem I experienced. But not everyone can even afford treatment or hair transplants, so, if there is something simple that really does help and work, people are going to try it.” For Kyran, hair loss affected his overall confidence. He said: “I think it’s really difficult for men who have lost or are losing

their hair. The internal conversation you have with yourself about the way you look often becomes a negative one. You look in the mirror and you see your hair is gone. Then when you go out and meet people, you believe the first thing they notice is the fact that you’re balding. Because you are! Also, if say, you’re single, 31 and losing your hair, it could definitely make your confidence low which makes things hard when it comes to meeting a new partner. It affects how you feel about yourself and that will come across when socialising with people.” Kyran was introduced to the fibres during his triumph on Dancing On Ice, he said: “Nobody likes to see themselves on TV. You tend to pick fault in the way you’re walking, or talking. You really pick up on the littlest things and criticise yourself for them. I was in front of 10 or 12 million people nationally on Dancing On Ice and when I watched the footage back, all I could see was these bald patches, which I hated. “My hair stylist recommended I try the hair loss concealer fibres. The next week it was as if I had a full head of hair! It made me feel much better.” The Viviscal range includes a supplement for men and women and Kyran says that he thinks hair loss is “definitely worse for women” and would “recommend they try them”. Kyran uses Viviscal Hair Loss Concealer Fibres which can be used in conjunction with Viviscal supplements and hair care range to help prevent further hair loss. Viviscal Hair Loss Concealer Fibres - available in Brunette, Light Brown, Blonde, Auburn and Grey - are priced at £19.95 and are available exclusively from Gordons Chemists stores across Northern Ireland. Contact provides the regional Lifeline crisis counselling service 0808 808 8000, for people of all ages in crisis or despair. Norma Patterson, Corporate Director of Contact said of the launch: “ We thought a Cream Tea for Contact was a simple but effective way, not only to raise money for a cause close to peoples’ hearts, but also, as a way to catch up with friends and family. As a charity involved with counselling and ‘talking therapies’, we believe that having

a chat with friends or family over a cup of tea is good for peoples’ mental health and wellbeing. “We are thrilled with the recent support of Suki Tea and Genesis Crafty for our first ever Cream Tea for Contact. Suki Tea has kindly agreed to give generous online discount on a selection of teas to anyone organising their Cream Tea for Contact and this can be arranged by contacting our office for more details.” Contact has a network of over 70 trained counsellors working throughout the region with 40 counsellors working on the Lifeline crisis counselling free-phone helpline 0808 808 8000 answering up to 2,000 calls per week. The Beauty Column Welcome to the brand new monthly column with Ulster Life’s top beauty columnist, Judith Mulgrew. For those who don’t know Judith, she runs the award winning, Skin Medi Spa on Belfast’s Lisburn Road which she opened in 2007. Judith is now on hand to tend to all your beaty needs.

W

ith the latest poolside looks gracing every magazine page, and beachwear styles already hitting the shelves, for me the run-up to summer has officially started. I find that for many women this can be a particularly daunting and stressful time as summer brings with it restricted clothing choices and pangs of guilt, stress and self-consciousness in the search for a perfect beach body. In the months leading up to the summer holidays, women of all ages, even with the strictest diet or exercise regime, can find it near impossible to successfully shift those dimpled, fatty deposits in the thighs and buttocks. Oh yes ladies, cellulite has a lot to answer for! Luckily at Skin Medi-Spa we are at hand to offer a fast and effective solution to unwanted inches with the innovative Velashape™ anti-cellulite and inch loss treatment. With stunning Hollywood ladies such as Demi Moore, Jennifer Aniston and Sharon Stone hooked, this is without doubt the best way to achieve noticeably smoother and firmer skin without going under the knife. The treatment lasts around an hour, is pain free and produces results after only one treatment, ensuring you’re beach ready in no time at all. So how does it work, I hear you ask! A combination of light energy and massage targets fatty tissue to increase metabolism and drainage. This shrinks fat cell size and, in turn, reduces cellulite. This can be carried out on most parts of the body to target any problem areas you may have for smoother, reshaped, toned and contoured skin. Trust me, your ‘natural you’ will be empowered and your body renewed through a wonderful combination of the best expert advice and the most advanced treatments all within

luxurious and comfortable surroundings. Bare summer skin can also cause anxiety in some men and women for other reasons which include scars; acne scars; fine lines and wrinkles; stretch marks; aged skin; and sun damaged skin. The sun holds no prisoners and for some the feeling is similar to being thrown into a public place full of strangers – naked! These individuals want noticeable results and for them I recommend Skin MediSpa’s anti-wrinkle Micro Needling/Derma Roller Therapy - a procedure made popular by celebrities such as Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. When treated on a regular basis, skin rejuvenates and repairs itself more effectively with results revealing firmer and younger looking skin. The Micro Needling/Derma Roller System gently parts the pores of the skin without any damage to the skin and triggers the healing process which makes skin more able to absorb nutrients such as Vitamin C and E as well as Aloe Vera. Skin is then smothered in a nutrient rich cream which increases levels of collagen and elastin. At Skin Medi Spa we pay overwhelming attention to detail to ensure exceptional standards of personal care and comfort are met so that you can lie back and indulge in a completely new you. April also sees in a very special offer on Micro Needling/ Derma Roller Therapy at £150 per session (usually £250 per session) – a saving of £100! To celebrate perfect summer-ready skin and complement a brand new you, I recommend some fantastic beauty packages this month. First up, why not pamper yourself with VIP Gelish nails (fingers and toes) for £40? Gelish will last on nails for up to 3 weeks, boasting a high shine and a completely natural look

all the Choose be sure this is

while protecting the original nail. from a wide selection of shades and of no chipping or peeling – I believe low maintenance at its very best.

For only £30, ladies can avail of our special VIP monthly package offer of mini manicure and pedicure, an eyebrow wax and eyelash tint. For me, it’s important not to forget how much summer sun loves well-groomed brows for a more defined face and an eyelash tint keeps eyes oh so hassle-free! If it’s just brows you’re interested in transforming, I propose our VIP Eyebrows HD brows for a fantastic £25! Do you have a day out at the races, a garden party or summer wedding to attend? I like to make like a celebrity and indulge in a full set of state-of-the-art, semi-permanent 3D Lashes. At Skin Medi-Spa, VIP semi-permanent 3D Lashes are now only £60 (originally £80). These lash extensions give longer, thicker, more natural (or glamorous, depending on how you feel) looking lashes. Unlike traditional false lashes, 3D Lash Extensions are individual, fabulously fuss-free and comfortable to wear lashes, which last for weeks and weeks. Hurry ladies for April only with your Beauty Experts. I welcome you to spring and a whole new you!!

MENCAP Y-FACTOR Sean Paul Gilbride wins Mencap’s Y-Factor with an ‘X’cellent performance!

Northern Ireland’s leading learning disability charity, Mencap, crowned the winner of its ever popular ‘Y’ Factor competition in Belfast’s Empire Music Hall on Saturday 24th March. The fourth annual X Factor inspired talent contest was won by West-Belfast boy Sean Paul Gilbride from First Options Modelling Agency, who belted out a heart-wrenching rendition of Lana Del Ray’s ‘Born to Die’. Performances from all the budding pop-stars were of a very high standard, but Sean Paul captivated the audience members and judges and won the chance to record his single at Sound House Music NI, while raising money for the charity. Each contestant performed with The Jukes, a live five piece band, before a panel of highprofile judges made up of Steve Martin from Sound House NI, Director of Belfast FASHIONWEEK Cathy Martin and Brenda Buckley from Business Eye magazine. Danielle Hibbert, Fundraising Manager for Mencap in Northern Ireland says, “This year’s

Y-Factor was, without a doubt, better than ever before and the talent was unbelievable! We were delighted to have such great support from local businesses such as Asda, Oxford Economics, Optical Express, Consilium Technologies and Interesting Electrical Devices, and were shocked at the hidden talent in Northern Ireland! All of the money raised for Mencap in Northern Ireland is spent in Northern Ireland, supporting both children and adults with learning disabilities and their families and carers. The Y Factor was, as always, a unique and entertaining event and most of all raised valuable funds for our charity!” Fundraising is a vital part of Mencap’s work, and The Y Factor is just one of the charity’s many exciting and innovative opportunities to help raise funds for Mencap whilst experiencing amazing personal achievements. For further information on any of Mencap’s upcoming fundraising opportunities visit the Facebook page at facebook.com/mencapchallengesni.

HAUTE handicraft. Traditional craft or ‘Haute handicraft’, as it has been coined by Vogue, is having a revival for spring/summer 2012. The movement is weaving its way into dresses, tops and accessories in a huge way. Like in past seasons, lace, crochet, beadwork, broderie anglaise and loosely knit garments have featured on the runways. This season, hand-crafted garments are back with a bolder take on each featuring bright colours and experimental pieces. Unexpected fabrics such as cord and plastic strips have also been included in some designers’ collections. Check out U.S. fashion writer, Jenny McFarlane’s look at the ‘haute handicraft’ trend.

Crochet

There’s something very bohemian about crochet, but somehow designers like Dolce and Gabbana discovered a way to modernize a knit most associate with sofa throws. The delicate mix of bright crochet with a clashing pattern is a refreshing take on the craft. Choose a crochet dress and mix with modern, minimalistic pieces for an up-to-date look

Broderie Anglaise

Louis Vuitton’s S/S 12 collection was effortlessly pretty. Crisp brights were beautifully accented with oversized broderie anglaise (white cotton with a cut-out, lace-like pattern). Broderie anglaise is a good alternative if lace isn’t quite your thing. Choose a light, whimsical piece of your choice with this detailing to be right on trend.

Loose Knit As always, Mark Fast, pushes the boundaries of traditional craft, creating elegant knitted designs. This full-length loose weave knitted dress is a fine example. Loosely knit is a great spring/ summer staple. Usually knitted in the softest of cottons, a loose weave piece will be luxuriously cool on a summer’s evening.

Lace Preen’s take on lace in their S/S 12 collection revived this usually dainty fabric by teaming it with multi-coloured pixel emblazoned blouses. Contrary to its usual reputation as delicate and super pretty, the thicker the lace is, the better for S/S 12. A lace accent will look perfect when teamed with a boxy jacket to balance your outfit.

Beadwork Dolce and Gabbana and Etro showcased delicate beadwork on their vintage inspired pieces. Colourful, bright beadwork was spotted on dropped waisted dresses and basques, adding instant glamour to the designs. To ensure the beadwork takes centre stage, pair a signature beaded garment with minimal jewellery.

CATHY MARTIN Cathy Martin gives UlsterLife her Make Up Must Haves for the spring.

Now that the sun has finally made it out I am so glad that I can take those first steps into shedding my winter layers and coat myself in pretty pastels, sassy shimmers and powerful prints. As I break away from my former wardrobe this April I am also dipping into Spring’s hottest make up trends. After endless months of central heating and fuller coverage make up, my youthful glow is ready to be recaptured; lit up by all those extra hours of natural light and nourished by that muchneeded vitamin D. It’s quite simply a breath of fresh air to both skin and mind. Before grabbing the foundation, I always like to apply a touch of Clarins’ Instant Light Complexion Perfector. A godsend, this illuminating complexion perfector smoothes and evens my skin tone for a fresh glow and healthy looking complexion. The lightweight texture glides on effortlessly and provides a perfect base for further make up. Making the most of the season’s fine offerings of ‘light veil’ make ups, Clarins Skin Illusion Natural Radiance Foundation SPF 10 is one to catch the eye. Ideal for all skin types, its light-reflecting, oil-free and hydrating fluid uses a mix of mineral and plant ingredients to create sheer radiance in a bottle. A Light Optimising Complex, Pink Opal Pigments, and a special blend of ingredients provide continued protection and hydration for the skin throughout the day.

For a shimmering splash of colour on the eyelids, my favourite product at the moment is Dior’s 5 Colours Iridescent Eye Shadow kit in Ready-To-Glow. Super sparkling due to its ultra-wet, metallic look, these shades put the ‘pop’ in pastel for a new twist on spring evening chic. The unique Wet Reflect™ technology blends with pearlescent particles for unrivalled brilliance and a silky feel almost creamy in texture making it fantastically blendable. I’m always on the look out for a new gloss with the ‘wow’ factor and Bourjois’ Effet 3D Max Lip Gloss in Rose Gold certainly gives that maximum impact and volume with just a glimmer of warmth. Enriched with shine micro-activator polymers, the texture is extra smooth, ultra comfortable and extremely covering; delivering true colour with maximum shine. One thing is for sure, this glamorous gloss with its precision applicator is guaranteed to light up your spring smile. Even though we have left winter behind, we all still need black mascara – and lashings of it! With a multi-bristle wand, No7 Extravagant Volume Mascara creates a false lash effect and cleverly coats each and every lash from root to tip leaving lashes looking thicker, fuller and more volumised. Its smooth formula is perfect for building up lashes without any clumps so you can flutter away in confidence. This is a gem of a mascara for toughening up spring’s girly pastel colours and adding more

strength and drama to eyes for a more edgy look. To soften this look slightly, I recommend Benefit’s slimline BAD Gal Liner Waterproof Eye Pencil in Espresso. Not only does this shade complement pastel eye shadows, it also draws attention upwards to your iris, eyelid and brow bone as your eye colour is no longer ‘bottom heavy’. This eyeliner really stays put, come Northern Ireland rain or shine. For a smoky effect, smudge with the blending tip. Another spring make up bag must-have is The Body Shop’s Brow & Lash Gel. A slick of this clear gel will define and hold eyebrows in place. In warmer climes, fixing eyebrows is much more preferable than using a powder or pencil as this adds to that natural, wellgroomed feel without worrying about make up movement. For a burst of playful colour on the cheeks, there’s nothing better than The Body Shop Shimmer Waves blusher in Blush. This neat compact carries five gorgeous shimmering shades for face and cheeks offering a range of colour variations depending on whether you use the shades all together or individually. Either dust the entire face for a sun-kissed glow or pick a shade to highlight or contour your cheekbones. Go forth and explore your new spring look with confidence - it’s a whole new world.

Focus on Fashion With Eve Brannon. A leading stylist in Northern Ireland, Eve has a wealth of experience in the industry. Each month she offers a fashion focus into the most coveted designers, trends and styles of the season.

Try it!

Whether you decide on subtle iridescent embellishment or high-sheen fabrics, it’s time to shine in this season’s hottest metallic musthaves, as this trend is worth its weight in gold, silver, pewter and bronze! Spring summer catwalks saw shimmering silhouettes emerge in abundance – Giles Deacon’s futuristic collection featured lasercut silver leather, inspired by Andy Warhol’s room of Silver Clouds. UNIQUE

At Unique, inspiration came in the form of Elizabeth Taylor in the iconic Cleopatra film of 1963. Body-con dresses were transformed with gold-foiled metallic prints, Egyptian hieroglyphics were etched over track bottoms, and gold leaf designs adorned knitted hoodies. The metallic mash-up didn’t end there, as futuristic fabrics flashed alongside contrasting coral and pastel pinks. GILES DEACON

the 1920s with metallic flapper-esque fringing. While Balmain, Alexander McQueen and Roberto Cavalli all went gold for gilding.

With the plethora of gilded looks showcased during SS12 shows, it seems that shiny threads are definitely here to stay. So, if unsure about this bold clothing trend, adding just a touch of opulent metallics can be just as effective and noteworthy.

Stylist Tip:

Incorporate metallic garments easily into your wardrobe by pairing with classic neutrals. Balance gold, silver or bronze tone separates with a cream silk cami, nude heels or a flesh-tone patent belt.

Victoria Square Sets Sail With RNLI Charity Partnership

ictoria Square has launched an exciting partnership with the RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution), setting a target to raise £30,000 to support the charity’s work saving lives at sea. The RNLI has nine lifeboat stations in Northern Ireland and last year its crews launched 269 times and rescued 201 people. The charity also has lifeguards on seven beaches on the north coast. If achieved, the £30,000 fundraising target will cover the cost of training 30 volunteer lifeboat crew members, who in turn will use their skills to save lives at sea. The partnership was announced with the arrival of Donaghadee and Bangor RNLI volunteer lifeboat crews into Belfast Harbour. The two lifeboat crews recently worked together when a cargo ship collided with a passenger ferry in Belfast Lough. The crews then made the short trip from the harbour to Victoria Square and right to the top of the iconic dome, which looks out over Belfast city. An exciting calendar of events is planned

over the next twelve months, which will showcase the work of the charity’s volunteer lifeboat crews and lifeguards and provide entertainment for all the family. The RNLI will also provide advice through its education and sea safety volunteers. The activities will begin in the first week of April with the Portrush RNLI Raft Race challenge. A man made desert island will be built in Victoria Square, which will only be accessible by raft. Over the course of two days a host of special guests will be dared by the public to carry out tasks to raise funds for the RNLI. BBC Radio Ulster’s Alan Simpson will also be on hand to monitor activities and interview the guests. Hugh Black, centre manager, Victoria Square, whose father Noel was lifeboat crew with Portrush RNLI for many years, said of the charity partnership: “Victoria Square is proud to partner with the RNLI to support their vital work on the seas surrounding Northern Ireland.

In 2012, as we celebrate the centenary of Titanic’s fateful voyage, we believe it is apt that our fundraising efforts this year will go towards saving lives at sea.” RNLI manager,

corporate Michelle

partnerships Noone added:

“We are so excited to be working with Victoria Square as one of our key fundraising partners for 2012. We wanted to do something special over the course of the year, so we have set an ambitious fundraising target of £30,000 and are working on a number of events that will appeal to all the family. In addition to the vital funds this partnership will raise to support our work in Northern Ireland, we believe Victoria Square will provide an excellent platform from which to educate the public about the important work carried out by our highly dedicated volunteers.” For further information on events at Victoria Square, www.victoriasquare.com

WINNER OF DIET COKE AND BENEFIT’S “GET GLAM” COMPETITION GETS SET TO JET OFF TO SAN FRANCISCO One of the most exciting make-up competitions to have ever been held in Northern Ireland took place on the 25th March in the iconic Sally’s nightclub of Omagh. The Get Glam competition was a collaboration between Diet Coke and Benefit Cosmetics which aimed to find the most talented and creative make-up artists in the country. To help in celebrating this launch, Sally’s in Omagh, one of the most well known and regarded venues in mid-Ulster played host to the nail biting live final of the competition in the club yesterday afternoon. Over 20 professionals and amateurs battled it out in various categories such as Bridal, Fantasy or Fashion Editorial in front of a thrilled audience before the big announcement came early yesterday afternoon. Oonagh McGirr, owner of Sally’s was really impressed by the quality of the competitors “The creativity shown by competitors today was exceptional” said Oonagh,” we are really pleased to be involved in this event and to support talent like this. We are now hoping to make this an annual event.” continued Oonagh. Caoimhe Curran from Belfast was proclaimed the worthy winner due to her clear talent, level of technique and knowledge of the craft. Paddy McGurgan, one of the most respected make-up artists in the country, was

on hand throughout the day for advice and guidance and said, “From the very start of the application process it was clear that Caoimhe knew exactly what she was doing and we were very impressed with her vision and the enthusiasm she had for the industry.” Dublin based make-up artist and judge Ken Boylan agreed, “Throughout the course of the day, in the various categories, we were continually impressed with Caoimhe and her use of colour, shading and technique.” Sandra Devenney of Benefit Cosmetics, who was also on the judging panel said, “Caoimhe is the perfect choice to travel to America to learn from the make-up masters at Benefit Headquarters. She will get four days in San Francisco learning first-hand the latest tricks and techniques for this season as well as goodies galore for her own kits and professional development.” With other winners across the various categories and special commendations to Susan McDermott from Tyrone and Paula Healy from Cork for the level of skill they showed at such an early stage in their careers, the standard of presentation from all contestants was exceptional. As well as the competition taking place throughout the day there were beauty demonstrations on willing members of the public from the Benefit team and great prizes

to be won as part of a ballot in support of the John McGirr Fund. This very worthy charity was founded in 2010 following John’s death in 2009 from Prostate Cancer. The aim is to raise funds to help develop research facilities at Queen’s University Belfast and care facilities at the City Hospital, Belfast where the popular owner of Sally’s had received his treatment. The collaboration between Diet Coke and Benefit has seen a limited edition collection of specially designed Diet Coke cans launched across Northern Ireland based on the three new key make-up looks developed by Benefit for this spring and summer. They are available throughout Northern Ireland until April 1st. Guests were treated to a Diet Coke drinks reception on arrival and the Diet Coke girls were on hand throughout the afternoon to sell the ballot tickets for the enviable prizes. Paula Colhoun, Licensed Trade Marketing Manager for Diet Coke, Ireland, said, “This fantastic event follows a number of successes that we have had with Sally’s and it is great that we can really highlight the great relationship that Benefit shares with Diet Coke in Northern Ireland and throughout the whole of Ireland with the specially designed cans available nationwide.”

The Beauty Company As spring - the time of new beginnings - is looming I want to dedicate myApril issue to all mummy’s and to the wondrous treatment; Maya Abdominal Therapy.

Maya Abdominal Therapy, or Maya Massage which it is more commonly known, is the miracle massage treatment I brought back to Ireland from Belize in June 2009. I came across this life-changing treatment whilst on my own heartbreaking journey to becoming pregnant myself. I had had several devastating ectopic pregnancies and had lost both fallopian tubes by age 28 Desperate for a baby but more desperate to restore the feelings of failure in my inabilities to conceive. After extensive research, I came across Maya Massage and was excited about the concept, only to find it wasn’t available here. I realised my only option was to train myself to be become the first in Ireland. I knew nothing could restore my tubes, but if I could prevent this tragedy happening to someone else it was worth a shot. I was so inspired by the founder of Arvigo techniques, Rosita Arvigo, who apprenticed with Don Elijio for more than 20 years. Rosita herself is a great intuitive healer who has worked with many other traditional healers in Central America to put this massage technique together. She is still practicing today after more than 30 years and teaching the massage technique across the US. She too had blocked, damaged fallopian tubes and truly believes Maya massage unblocked them, she went on to conceive and carried three babies to term. I travelled to London for first part of training mandate, then on to America. After extensive

training I became the first practitioner in Ireland. Having been so inspired by holistic therapies, I went on to study reiki, cystal healing and reflexology. All of which complement the treatment. The treatment The concept of the treatment is initially thorough understanding of the individual, emotionally, physically and spiritually. The massage itself focuses very much so on the displacement of reproductive organs affecting blood flow and bowel problems. But it’s the unspoken connection between the healing of hands and the connection the woman achieves with her body again that allows the miracles to happen. My massage technique has now allowed over 35 women to achieve pregnancy, that perhaps otherwise wouldn’t and for that I am eternally grateful. A little thank you… The most beautiful thing that I have learnt from doing this treatment is that in the end, every woman finds her epiphany, in whatever shape or form. Ms. Malone BT9s PREMIER FASHIONISTA SOLVES YOUR FASHION WOES.

Dear Ms Malone, I saw so many peplum tops at Belfast Fashion Week, but am a bit clueless when it comes to wearing the trend myself. Can you give me some pointers on peplums and point me in the direction of some flattering ones for my boyish shape?

Puzzled by Peplums

Dear Puzzled, Peplums are a fantastic style if you describe your body shape as “boyish.” The ruffle around the waist adds emphasis on the smallest part of your body, your waist, while also creating a bit of curve at your hips. The look can be worn with trousers or a skirt, and even peplum blazers and dresses are available if you want to experiment. The important thing is to try on whichever peplum you’re considering purchasing. Not all are created equally—some add more volume, and some garments may have the ruffle placed higher up on the body. The seam where the ruffle attaches to the garment should be right above the hip, causing the ruffle of the peplum to move with the curve of your hip. If the peplum is too high or low, it could give your body an odd shape. CastleCourt is a great place to start your quest for the perfect peplum, as many or their shops are stocking the trend and you’ll have the chance to try them on. Look for peplums on tops in Dorothy Perkins like the Navy Spot Peplum, £27, or for a full dress try the Pink Naples Peplum Dress, £42, at Miss Selfridge.

Dear Ms Malone, I love to throw on a pair of skinny jeans and comfy flats for a weekend on the run with the kids or out at the shops, but I’m getting quite bored with the usual dark denim. Since it’s not quite summer yet, it feels too soon to pull my white jeans from the wardrobe. Do you have suggestions for some stylish jeans options for a springtime weekend?

Tired of Mom Jeans Dear Mom, Dark denim can look a bit drab after a while, and white jeans do sometimes give a bit of a holiday in Spain vibe. This spring is all about colour, and the shops are filled with pastels and sherbet colours, even in denim! Brighten up your look for spring with a few pairs of pastel skinny jeans, or if you’re feeling bold, why not play with a bright red jean and a soft flowey top? The great thing about the light shades of these trousers is that they can go with loads of other colours on the top. Keep to the pastel palette to avoid looking like the rainbow, or pair one pastel piece with neutrals. Try French Connection in Cornmarket for some high-quality pastel jeans in a range of springy colours like these pink ones for £77, or if you’re on a tight budget try some of Primark’s pastel trousers on offer. These are not your typical mom jeans!

Dear Ms Malone, I love all of the 70s trends that are popping up in shops right now—they make me think of my childhood! I can’t wait to try out some of these retro looks, but I’m a bit worried about looking like I do in old family photos. How can I keep the 70s look fresh?

Disco Diva Dear Diva, Period trends are often difficult to wear without looking like you’re in costume. The main difference between 70s-inspired clothes and, say, 70s clothes you’d find in a thrift shop, is that newer garments are designed with modern cuts and body shapes in mind. Unlike the clothes you probably wore back then, these pieces are also more likely to be in natural fabrics rather than the stiff synthetics of the 70s. Colour is also important. Stick with a modern, chic colour palette of pretty pastels rather than reverting to the retro browns and mustards of yesteryear. I love this high-end 70s look available from L.K. Bennett at The Outlet in Banbridge. In this picture model Jayne from Belfast Fashion Week is rocking the 70s resort look with pair of highwaisted trousers and a floppy wide-brimmed hat in chic cream tones. Boohoo.com also has the decade trends covered with plenty of 70s looks on offer. I love their Nancy Aztec Dress, £25, for a retro sun dress look.

PATRICK COLHOUN news from ulster’s art scene Exhibitions can be like buses as you can have a period of inactivity and then a whole host of events come around at once. For me, time spent at the minute is valuable in terms of preparation as I have a hectic period around May and June as I am exhibiting in such diverse places as Bucharest, London, Belfast and Bangor. My attention is currently on the Belfast exhibition. As mentioned last month this will be one to look out for. ‘WARNING! This is Contemporary Art’opens on 25th May and is an international group exhibition focusing on the highly alternative representations of the human figure and its’ associated activities. The show includes drawing, sculpture, installation, painting, video, photography and digital animation. There will be work from well known artists such as Tracey Emin and Julian Opie as well as local artists including Peter Richards, Miranda Whall, Gail Ritchie, Sean Miller, Miguel Martin, Lydia Holmes, Leontia Fegan, Ciaran Magill and Stuart Roberts. As well as opening the exhibition, Professor André Stitt will be exhibiting paintings that in their execution rely on a certain sonic atmosphere in the studio. Stitt says ‘’This soundscape is derived from my habit of blasting out all sorts of well-known, obscure, and downright obscene ‘Prog-Rock’ in my studio in Cardiff.” Staying with the music/art connection, Lee Boyd of ‘Show me the Monet’ and Saatchi fame, has completed an album cover for local band Farriers. Done in Lee’s ‘Manimal’ style, it depicts each band member with a particular animal head that suits their personality. Never do as I once did and ask Lee what sort of

animal he would draw you as, you may not like the answer! Following on from Home Grown at F.E. McWilliam Gallery, Rita Duffy’s solo exhibition, Arctic Circus consists of painting, charcoal drawing, sculpture and a tent made from animal skin. A departure from her previous work which was rooted in her native Belfast, this body of work is derived from a three month residency in Dalsasen, Norway. Duffy’s normally dark work is intensified by inspiration taken from local myths and legends as well as living in almost continual darkness. The intensity of the large scale painting and drawings are juxtaposed by the miniature sculptures, intricate works carved from soap, a result, I am told, of a misplaced laptop and time to kill! Arctic Circus runs until April 28th. The Golden Thread Gallery has been very active at Scope, New York, with the theme of Lost in Lust: the Representation and Misrepresentation of Woman. The theme plays with the idea of exploitation and question who, if anyone, is being exploited. Voyeurism, pornography, myth and tradition are all explored and attitudes are questioned. One to watch out for is the Living Skull, an exhibition in the Fenderesky Gallery, consisting of work by amongst others, Peter Burns, David Crone, Graham Gingles, Zoe Murdoch, Jack Packenham and Martin Wedge. For me, preparation for a two man show in London and my first outdoor, large scale work dominate, more about that next month.

BRIDAL GOES VINTAGE By Catherine Massey (of Cathedral Gowns) on behalf of The Beauty Cloud

The reign of the strapless gown seems to be coming to an end, giving way to a plethora of fabulous necklines including V-necks, bateau necks, halters, cap sleeves and even full length fitted sleeves. It makes for a refreshing change and owes much to our obsession with all things vintage. The 1940’s show their influence in the newest bridal collections. Wartime ladylike silhouette epitomised by the sweet tea dress is definitely reflected in many of our gorgeous new styles, and elements of Old Hollywood styling are obvious in the gorgeous fitted gowns in satin and lace that are proving very popular with this year’s brides. The 1950’s are also referenced by many bridal designers whose gorgeous full skirts are directly inspired by Christian Dior’s ‘New Look’ of exaggerated nipped in waistlines and extravagant super full skirts. Other era’s showing influence is the 1970’s in the newest arm cover-up the lace or crocheted

poncho, and the 1920’s in the bias-cut slipper satin styles. But these gowns are anything but costumey or old fashioned – they are modern and elegant, with just a nod to times gone by Bling as the main adornment is fading in favour of texture in gowns, cascades of tiny fabric roses, or tulle ruffles adorn many of the newest styles, but lace is definitely the biggest style trend in bridal-wear right now. Lace gowns have been filtering through for the past few years, but since Catherine Middleton donned a stunning Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen gown last summer, the acceptance of lace as a bridal gown fabric has been on an upward trajectory. Its elegance and sophistication is undoubted as is the timelessness of a lace wedding gown, but the 2012 lace gown has evolved into a gown with subtle surprises – quirky embellishments, belts and gorgeous keyhole cut out backs are just a few of my favourite details.

Top Ten Tips: PRESENTING YOUR HOUSE FOR SALE.

John Minnis, Director, John Minnis Estate Agents, which has two branches, specialising in both the residential sales and lettings throughout Belfast, North Down, Bangor and Ards Peninsula, shares with us his top tips for presenting your home for sale.

1. First Impressions Count

2. Clean & Sparkling

Seem obvious? Not to everyone…All too often vendors don’t see the importance of keeping the home clean and tidy for each and every viewing. A possible buyer wants to imagine themselves living in your house, this won’t be as desirable if it isn’t looking its best. It is easy to do the following, and might make the first impression more Clean the bathrooms and floors until they shine, hoover all floors and fabrics and clean all surfaces. memorable, for the right reasons. Displays bunches of flowers throughout. How does your home look from the street? Is the driveway untidy? The grass unkempt? Sort it out. You need any potential buyers to be sufficiently impressed from the street to stop the car and get out and take a closer look.

3. Create an Ambience From the moment a potential vendor walks into your home, they should be overcome with a welcoming feeling. Warmth – put the heating on at least an hour before viewings – nothing worse than a cold home – if you have a fire – light it Soft lighting – if the viewing is in early evening or a dark day – make the effort to ensure each room is lit right – side lamps create a nicer ambience than glaring overhead lighting Smell - Unpleasant or strong smells have a negative effect on people; avoid cooking before viewings and it may be advisable to smoke outside. Air the house thoroughly and invest in a few scented candles – nothing too strong, just enough to neutralise any odours.

5. Neutralise That brings me onto colours…. Neutral colours sell. It’s a fact. Try to convey an image of quality and neutrality. Potential buyers walking through your home want to imagine themselves as the owners. If you use styles or colours they would never select, you’ve just turned them off. Stay high-quality, but neutral is safest.

7. De-personalize. Remove objects that your potential buyers won’t be able to identify with. For example, political and religious items may turn off whole groups of buyers, because they cannot “imagine” your home as their home. Buying a home is an emotional decision, and you want potential buyers to make an emotional connection with your home by being able to “see” themselves in it. Box items that are personal to you, it will pay off in the long-run…

9. Scrutinise When it comes to the point where you are ready to put your home on the market, a good idea is always to ask a friend or neighbour to come over and give their opinion on all your handy work. Ask them to be honest and open about how they feel your home looks as a potential buyer. Don’t be offended in any way – remember this is constructive criticism.

4. Make Minor Repairs. You don’t need to spend a fortune on house improvements that your potential buyer may or may not want, but spend your energy on repairing signs of obvious wear and tear. Replace cracked floor or counter tiles Patch holes in walls Fix doors that don’t close properly and kitchen drawers that jam If you’ve considered replacing a worn bedspread, do so now

6. De-Clutter! People collect an amazing quantity of junk. Try and live by this rule - if you haven’t used it in over a year, you probably don’t need it. Nothing will turn off a potential buyer quicker than a cluttered untidy home. You want to portray your home as calm, idyllic and spacious – not loud, overcrowded and cluttered.

8. Period Features and Props Dress-up your main rooms to their advantage, use props such as candles, plants and soft furnishings to show how you could best utilise the area to help buyers visualise themselves living there, also place greater emphasis on any unusual or period features – this could be dressing an unused Victorian fireplace in church candles and dusting off the cornicing.

10. Disassociate Yourself with Your Home Finally…Easier said than done, but if you can try and say to yourself, “This is not my home; it is a house -- a product to be sold.” Make the mental decision to “let go” of your emotions and focus on the fact that soon this house will no longer be yours. Try and picture yourself handing over the keys and envelopes containing appliance warranties to the new owners. This will make the whole selling process easier on you and your family. And most importantly, don’t look backwards -- look toward the future… .a whole new chapter awaits you.
