West Coast Cooler FASHIONWEEK is set for a ‘blooming’ spectacular Spring/ Summer event with the announcement of the schedule for the four day fashion festival which offers some serious style inspiration for the season ahead. Taking place from 23-26 March at venues across the city, the busy schedule sees the return of the sell-out high street and designer runway shows alongside popular fashion fringe events Sushi Saturday at Asian favourite Zen, as well as Style Sunday - which this season is held at Coco on Mother’s Day for the perfect day out for a stylish mum. Budding new events include the stylish Lavazza Coffee Style Saturday brunch at Robinson & Cleaver on Saturday 25 March. This event offers the ultimate fashion filter with key looks from across the fashion spectrum selected by some of the country’s top stylists including Courtney Smith and Cool FM’s Rebecca McKinney as well as London-based Jamie Russell and Lewis Cameron. A make up masterclass courtesy of FASHIONWEEK’s new title make up sponsor, KARAJA is also planned while hair partners ALFAPARF Milano will ensure the models’ locks are luscious throughout all events by teaming up 20

with some of the country’s best hair salons including Paul Stafford and Ben Close as well as Chrysalis and Scissor Sisters from Newry among others. Director Cathy Martin commented on the season’s key trends: “This season there is a focus on fun with playful colours and bold statements being made everywhere. My favourites among all the trends include the palettes of pinks, yellows and blues, as well as gorgeous ginghams and loads of Beetlejuice-inspired stripes. For eveningwear, there are mesmerizing metallics and sassy sequins which will satisfy all the fashion magpies out there. A feminine feel continues from AW16 with a tap into texture, so there’ll be loads more of romantic ruffles and playful plumes first seen on the Gucci, Chloe and Celine catwalks internationally.” She added: “We’re looking forward to having some of our regular designers and brands on the runways this season, but we’ve opened up the catwalks to the likes of ASOS, Zara, River Island, H&M and TOPSHOP via our stylist picks at the high street shows and at our wonderful new Style Saturday event. It’s an exciting season for us and I look forward to wowing the audiences with

the collections we’ll have on show.” Laura Blair, Brand Manager for West Coast Cooler, which sponsors the event, said: “At West Coast Cooler we love to celebrate individuality and style, especially with the launch of campaigns like our #WCCStyleSquad which integrate our audience with our brand activity – we love the fresh opportunities to engage with a fashion conscious customer. This sponsorship really is an ideal fit with the West Coast Cooler brand.” For further information and links to the full show schedule plus tickets, visit

The Sitting Room Ballymena

NI Hairdresser of the Year 2016!

UL

WEB | MAG | LIFE

The Sitting Room, Ballymena. NI Hairdresser of the Year 2016. Julian Dalrymple, owner of The Sitting Room in Ballymena was recently crowned NI hairdresser of the year 2016 at a glittering awards ceremony in London. UL Magazine got to sit down with Julian shortly after the event and chat to her about business and what it took to get to where she is today. Inspiration for this year’s collection was to create a portfolio that’s focus is the true beauty of hair, every element of the image from the photography, clothes, styling etc was to create crisp clean beautiful images. Current with pops of colour. 24

Firstly, what does it mean to you and the team to bring the prestigious award to Ballymena? To bring this award back to Ballymena for the first time is truly awesome! Locally we have a very high standard and this award shows that you don’t have to be based in a traditional big city to be good at what you do and offer the best hairdressing experience to every single client that comes into your salon. Hairdressing is not only my job, it’s what I and the team here love to do!

WEB | MAG | LIFE

UL

Have you any plans for the salon in the year ahead? Plans? good question I haven’t stopped thinking about that from we won. This year will be all about creativity. The team and I are going to take part in different hair shows throughout the U.K. Winning this award instantly raises or profile, within the industry this is the highest accolade you can get. So, we are going get involved in more session work (shoots stage work etc) Just watch this space. Tell us a little about the team at The Sitting Room. The Sittingroom team has grown to 13 with the most recent addition Laura our nail technician. I’ve a fantastic team around me and some who have been with me from day one. The Sittingroom is a team effort each member contributes to our success. We have just celebrated our 10th birthday where we travelled to Spain and attended a large hair show held by milkshake hair. The girls have won numerous awards

themselves, from young artistic team places where they travel to London on different dates, being trained by some of the largest names in the industry and doing their own photoshoot images at the end of that year. We all are inspired and motivated by different things but all have a common goal of wanting to make our clients look fabulous. What advice would you give someone thinking about a career in Hairdressing? My advice would be to simply work hard and anything is possible. You have a week off work and no financial constraints. Where do you go, what do you eat, drink, do and who goes with you? Love this question. A week off oh to dream. The one place on earth I love is the Maldives white sand blue sea a little cocktail or 2. Listen to some music and eat lots of Asian food. Thai being my favourite. I Would take the hubby and if possible my dog belle. That would be perfect! 25

Wine & Brine in Moira Where the finest casual dining secures loyal fans and growing list of foodie accolades

Northern Ireland is fast emerging as a culinary hub of greatness and within the crossroads of some of the best produce available in the country lies a new epicentre – Michelin Bib Gourmand winning Wine & Brine in Moira. Just a short drive from Belfast, Armagh, Portadown and Dungannon the multi-award winning restaurant is the gastronomic child of showstopper chef Chris McGowan and his wife Davina. In recent months Chris displayed his epicurean mastery on the Great British Menu – for the third consecutive year – winning the Northern Ireland heat two years ago. The widely-celebrated eatery, officially the Best Local Restaurant in the UK 2017 as judged by the Waitrose Good Food Guide, offers tantalizing dishes which illustrate McGowan’s flair for simple but innovative fare. The popular restaurant has also just been shortlisted for Menu of the Year 2017 by the Catey awards, from the leading industry publication The Caterer. Dining is not confined to Wine & Brine’s open-kitchen restaurant though. Three other rooms, of varying sizes, offer privacy in sumptuously-styled décor matching the elevated standard of cuisine. 28

In these intimate and discreet surroundings, catering for groups of between 8-40, food can be mulled over. Whether celebrating family occasions, catching up with friends or business colleagues, you can relax while sampling chef McGowan’s visionary plates of food created at “ridiculously reasonable prices” according to the Good Food Guide judges. Wine and Brine specialises in mixing the best of local produce, with a keen palate for its provenance and heritage, with old-school and traditional cooking methods like aging, curing and brining, hence its name. Lunch at Wine and Brine, which offers both light and quick bites or more hearty dishes amid a casual but lovingly restored Georgian splendour comes in the keen 4-10-4 format - £4 for starter, £10 main and £4 for dessert. Sunday Lunch keeps them at the door with three courses for £25. 59 Main Street, Moira, Co. Armagh BT67 0LQ T 028 9261 0500 E info@wineandbrine.co.uk W wineandbrine.co.uk

Do the (cat)walk of life... It’s time to reach for the ra-ra skirts and launder the legwarmers - or at least raid the charity shops - because eighties fashions are coming back with a vengeance! And to celebrate the decade that style (sometimes) forgot, a special event is taking place that will jog a few memories - and maybe cause a few cringes along the way. The Walk of Life Fashion Show is a unique, retro-inspired gala being brought to Belfast on 28 April 2017 by the very same fashionistas who were there, slap-bang at the heart of the vibrant 1980s fashion scene here. Organiser and ex-model Julie Duckworth is planning the event to raise much34

needed funds for two charities close to her heart. Her father died 18 years ago from cancer and her mother passed away with Parkinson’s Disease in 2014, so Julie will be donating all proceeds from the event to the charities Parkinson’s UK and The Boom Foundation as a tribute to them both. Proving that you’re never too old to be in vogue, Julie recruited a select team of (now) fifty-something models who cut their teeth during the ‘no-no-notorious’ New Romantic era to return to the catwalk once again to raise money for a very worthy cause. She has also signed up some of Northern Ireland’s most well-known

WEB | MAG | LIFE

celebrities to take part and has already secured the support of popular faces including comedians Nuala McKeever, John Lenehan, Tim McGarry and George Jones, as well as current and former TV and radio hosts Stephen Clements, Alison Fleming and Paul Clark while rumour has it that Jimmy Nesbitt, Mary Peters, Eamonn Holmes and even Jamie Dornan may be putting in an appearance. Cathy Martin, Director of Belfast Fashion Week, has been enlisted to run the show and, alongside Cool FM’s breakfast show host Pete Snodden, she will be compère for the evening, while Pete will also DJ the after-show 1980’s disco. Julie said: “In September 2014 the most devastating, life-changing event happened to me when I lost my mother to Parkinson’s Disease. Eighteen years earlier my dad had succumbed to cancer. I was completely broken, with time on my side as a healer, I wanted to do something positive in their memory. Then, earlier this year, I met with Cathy and had the idea to organise a charity fashion show with some of the key models from the 1980s with a retrothemed back drop, in particular the music and film footage from that era. I had also noticed that there was a new trend for 50+ models and decided to pull all our ideas together into one fundraising extravaganza. I am really

UL

delighted with the support so far – from industry and from friends. We’ve sold out our front row tickets already, but have availability for the rest of the seats and we would love a full house, so I would love lots of people to buy tickets for friends and family as Christmas presents!” The show will take place at the Crowne Plaza Hotel (formerly Ramada Plaza) on Friday 28 April 2017. Tickets, which cost £30, are available from Belfast Welcome Centre Box Office on 02890246609 or by clicking onto the following link: www.visitbelfast.ticketsolve.com/ shows/873560729/events The ticket price includes a sparkling wine reception plus a vintage video presentation pulled together by the team at Lyle Bailie, Julie’s former employers, along with the Walk of Life Fashion Show & celebrity entertainment. There will also be a performance by Ian Wilson (former guitarist with Sweet Savage) followed by an 80s Disco.

From Italy to Ireland One of the biggest events on Ireland’s social calendar in 2017 is set to be an exclusive fashion show by luxury Italian design house Max Mara, as it brings its full Spring/Summer 2017 collection from the catwalks of Milan to Belfast City Hall on 10 March in support of leading learning disability charity Positive Futures. The event is being hosted by kind permission of The Right Hon The Lord Mayor Brian Kingston who supports Positive Futures. Chief Executive of Positive Futures, Agnes Lunny OBE, remarked: “We are delighted to benefit from such a prestigious international show by one of the most exclusive names in fashion. The money raised will make a real difference to the people we support. We thank the Max Mara Belfast and Italy teams for their generosity and for allowing us to be part of what will be an exciting international event happening right here in Ireland.” Positive Futures provides support to people with a learning disability, acquired brain injury or autistic spectrum condition, and their carers. Tickets for the show are priced at £35 (sterling) per person or £75 for a VIP experience and are available online from www.positive-futures.net Make up for the show will be by Charlotte Tilbury

36

with hair by international session stylist Richard Phillipart for BaByliss. Nina Walls, owner of Max Mara’s Belfast store commented: “The fashion on show will be inspired by architect, designer and intellectual Lina Bo Bardi in a fusion of creative, radical, passion. Bo Bardi was a woman with a vision years ahead of her time who embodied Latin America’s compelling take on modernism; at once rational and sensual, sleek and luxuriant, athletic and sultry, hi-tech and artisanal. “For modern women with big ideas, the Max Mara Spring Summer 2017 collection proposes a new blend of voluptuous modernity - intelligent, audacious, sexy fashion with a lifespan as long as Bo Bardi’s designs.”

UL Fashion with Eve Brannon

Faking It A leading stylist in Northern Ireland, Eve has a wealth of experience in the industry. Each month she offers a fashion focus into the most coveted designers, trends and styles of the season. When it comes to winter fur, it’s all about faking it. Faux fur is the ultimate winter wardrobe must-have and unlike real fur, it’s ethical and cruelty free. In addition to the ethical benefits of faux fur, boycotting the real deal also means that the shopper has less fur-maintenance (no dust mites or chemical cleaning), the fabric has more breathability and not forgetting, it is kinder to the bank balance. Furthermore, advancements in design and quality fake fur fibres mean that our faux favourites are no longer made from cheap feather-light polyester, but superfluffy and silky-soft materials: a must for the most discerning customers who look for luxury when investing in a seasonal purchase. This season sees the tactile outerwear trend set to continue long into the chilly winter months ahead, as teddy chubby coats, sleek strokeable shearling, plush patchwork patterns and fur-ball fuzzy accessories add a little guilt-free fun to our wardrobes. Founder and designer Hannah Weiland is at the helm of the faux fur revolution 46

that is Shrimps. Since starting her brand in 2013, it has become the go-to for statement outerwear. It seems no street style Pinterest board is complete without a decent scattering of Shrimps finest faux fur creations. This eye-catching brand is now a favourite of fashion editors and influencers alike, with bold pops of colour and sassy slogan statements putting Shrimps at the top of every wishlist.

Charlotte Simone faux fur ‘Popsicle’ £175

A faux fur accessory has always had a place in fashion but in recent years, this winter staple has been revamped with a fresh aesthetic. No more so than by British designer Charlotte Simone. Inspired by the effortless style of Parisian women and their ability to build an outfit around a single accessory, Charlotte sought to reinvent the everyday scarf and in doing so created the ‘Popsicle’ – now her trademark piece (available in both faux and real fur and of course we’re coveting the faux version!).

If we’ve learned anything from winters past, it’s that a seriously good coat is both a staple and a style statement in equal measure. Not only are colourful faux furs offbeat and eye-catching, but they’re also affordable, super-warm, and kind to our furry friends – what’s not to love? Contact: Eve Brannon, Fashion Stylist and Journalist W: evebrannonfashionstyling.com T: 0 (44) 78 1759 7067 E: info@evebrannonfashionstyling.com

The Popsicle scarf perfectly compliments the winter layering trend and is a simple and effective way to restyle or add a fashion forward edge to almost any outfit. 49
