NEW SPRING COLLECTION AT MENARYS

I

F you haven’t purchased your new wardrobe for spring then you had better get your skates on and get down to Menarys. Building on the success of last year’s rebranding campaign and featuring model agency boss Alison Campbell and former Miss Northern Ireland Joanne Salley, Menarys is stepping into spring with an action-packed programme across its stores. To officially launch the new collections, Joanne Salley donned a range of stylish outfits

that have just arrived in Menarys. The new look Menarys welcomes top brands Vila, Esprit, Desigual and Jackpot to its spring collection. Vibrant fashions, luxury brands and chic accessories are ready to complete any look and personal stylists will be on hand to give shoppers expert tips. Alison Paul, stylist for the Tempest and Menarys Group said smart dresses and skirts are must haves this season, but called on ladies to experiment with some stunning new styles: “Fashion designers have given us all kind of fun fashions offering wonderful vivid prints, stripes, and geometric prints. The main theme will be somewhat tailored and classic but with a touch of edginess. This spring and summer you will find yourself wrapped in heavenly fabrics, adorned with fabulous vivid colour, as well as soft neutrals. Look again this spring to seeing lace, and floral prints on the racks. Katharine Hepburn’s timeless influence as always still reigns. You will continue to see tailored blazers and cute fitted cardigans.” Spring is closer than we think. Why not get a jump start on the hottest looks with a few helpful pointers? Thanks to Menarys, we have the best tips for looking chic this season! • It’s all about Pink! From accessories, to fashion, to rose blush on your cheeks, this spring calls for a flush of soft rose to complete your look. • Flash of Colour: Add a pop of colour! Bright red dress, or a turquoise fashion ring? These little touches of color will add drama to any ordinary look!

Ulster Life • Prints: Yes, prints are back. Exciting flower-print dresses spell out spring! More dramatic print patterns are also gaining a lot of attention. No print is over the top! • Vintage and Modern: A trendy look this spring is pairing modern pieces with vintage ones! Match a chic beige blazer with a chunky vintage-looking pendent necklace, and your favorite skinny jeans! • Aim for Minimalism: Less is more, really. Make-up-wise, simple is best. Pair sheer eye shadow with a light pink lip gloss. Line only the top upper corner of your eyelids. This spring it’s about elegance, with simple, pretty dresses, white laces and to-the-point clutches. • Stripes: Stripes seem to hold a place in fashion year after year. You can’t go wrong wearing stripes, from head to toe.

Ulster Life beauty

Welcome to the monthly beauty column in Ulster Life, written by myself, Judith Mulgrew. For those of you who don’t know me, I run an award-winning beauty clinic called Skin Medi-Spa on the Lisburn Road which I opened in 2007 and am now on hand to tend to all your beauty needs.

W

here has this year gone? I cannot believe it is March already, that extra day in February really made no difference whatsoever! At the salon we have had plenty to keep us busy and we have been training in new and wonderful treatments to introduce to our customers. I am fully trained in the art of semi-permanent make up, an exclusive and revolutionary treatment where natural pigments are inserted into the skin in a process similar to tattooing, to enhance the facial features and allow your natural beauty to shine through. Don’t worry, it is not as scary as it sounds and it lasts up to a year and a half, gradually fading over time without smudging or bleeding into the skin. This month is super busy with social occasions and with both Mother’s Day and St

Ulster Life beauty Patrick’s Day to look forward to, you want to look your best. Some brave girls also have another reason to good look, after taking the plunge and proposing to their man on the Leap Year! Girl Power! Semi-permanent make up is perfect if you are having trouble trying to think of that perfect Mother’s Day pressie, something for Easter or even just want to treat yourself now that those Christmas credit card bills are done and dusted. There are a number of different options available from eyebrow enhancing, eye liner (top or bottom), lip blush and liner and beauty spots. The semi-permanent make up treatments are really popular already and with a whole range of different women. Whether you have an allergy to make up, or certain conditions that make it difficult to apply such as Parkinson’s or MS, are constantly on the go or have even plucked your eyebrows until you could pluck no more (we can all sympathise), then semi-permanent is the way to go. Anyone who is considering a treatment will meet with me first so as we can work out the most natural colour of lip blush, eyebrow or even the strength and size of your new beauty spot, and yes, you would be amazed at how many are not natural but are put there by professionals. Some of the stylish ladies who grace the pages of magazines on a daily basis but who NEVER have to touch up their eyebrows or eyeliner include Colleen Rooney, model

Jessica Jane Clement and even Katie Price. Granted, we may not all use Jordan as our style guru but as a working mother and a very savvy businesswoman, she knows that to take the pressure off her daily make up routine, semi-permanent make up was an ideal investment. The technique is a very specialised and exclusive treatment and I am thrilled that I am now able to offer this to my clients. I have wanted to train in semi-permanent make up for years so to be able to do it now is very exciting. Not everyone can wear make up every day and can be left feeling self-conscious and unhappy with their appearance. Well not anymore ladies... and gents! I know, I know, you probably don’t believe that the men of the world would even consider cosmetic treatments such as these but I am amazed by how many appointments for lips, eyes and brows come in from the more style conscious men of our very own city! At the moment we are offering £75 off each treatment so just come in and have a chat about it and I can guarantee if you have it done you won’t remember how you lived without it!

Ulster Life BELFAST RETAILERS HAVE FASHIONABLE CELEBRATION OF INDEPENDENCE

B

elfast retailers will celebrate their very own ‘Independents Day’ on 5 March – as part of Belfast City Council’s Independent Retail Week – when they put on a free fashion show and exhibition in the City Hall. The Celebrate Independent Fashion show will take place between 12.30pm and 1.30pm in the Great Hall of the City Hall with tickets for the free show available from the Belfast Welcome Centre. The event will have something for everyone as a selection of independent stores from right across the city will literally set out their stalls making the event feel more like an indoor market. Alderman Christopher Stalford, Chairman of Belfast City Council’s Development Committee said: “This flagship event is a fun and visual way to highlight the contribution of fashion and beauty independents and the quality and the choice that is available across the city. “However, Belfast Independent Retail Week

16

March 2012

is about all the independent stores, hardware, home, craft and food that make Belfast such a satisfying place in which to live, work or visit. They help make Belfast unique and we want them to know they have our support in this difficult economic climate. “The fashion event is an innovative way of doing that, especially in such an iconic building as the City Hall, and the pop-up shops are forward thinking and a really useful way of allowing even more fashion beauty and craft stores to show their wares. “I hope many people take advantage of the opportunity of free tickets to come and see something that little bit different in the City Hall.” Tickets for this lunchtime event are free and are available from the Belfast Welcome Centre Box Office on 02890246609. For more information on Belfast Independent Retail Week, you can visit the council website and click on www.belfastcity.gov.uk/retail.

ashionistas from the world of retail and hospitality gathered in the luxurious surroundings of Belfast’s Merchant Hotel this weekend to celebrate the launch of a chic collaboration between Diet Coke and make up brand Benefit over Afternoon Tea and an intimate Benefit make up master class. The event celebrated an on-pack promotion which will run from 20 February to 01 April involving specially designed, limited edition Diet Coke cans in which consumers can win exclusive Benefit make-up kits every 30 minutes.  And just like the specially commissioned can designs, make up brand Benefit also created three keymake up looks inspired by the marionette puppets from the Diet Coke ad campaign. Guests at the event learnt how to use classic Benefit products such as Benetint or Cha-Cha tint effectively to get the fashionista,

Ulster Life You’ve got to be in it to win it – Mencap’s Y-Factor is back to give aspiring singers an ‘X’tra boost!

N

orthern Ireland’s leading learning disability charity, Mencap, is proud to announce the return of X-Factor inspired talent contest ‘The Y-Factor’, taking place at Belfast’s Empire Music Hall on Saturday 24th March. Back by popular demand, the fourth annual Y-Factor will provide aspiring singers and songwriters with a stage and a spotlight to belt it out in front of a live audience, while raising money for the charity. Hosted by Pamela Ballantine and Peter Gilroy, the ever-popular event will give budding pop stars from the Northern Ireland business community the opportunity to take to the stage with The Jukes, a live five piece band, and test their talents before a panel of high-profile judges made up of Steve Martin from Sound House NI, Cool FM’s Paul Kennedy, Director of Belfast FASHIONWEEK Cathy Martin and Brenda Buckley from Business Eye magazine. Each of the contestants is asked to raise £500 for Mencap before taking their places centre stage to compete to win the chance to record their track with Sound House Music and a number of other exciting prizes. Scores given by the panel of judges will count for 50% of the overall total of the contestants’ scores, while the audience will be given the opportunity to buy votes for their favourite singer to contribute to the other 50% of the final scores. The event promises to be a great opportunity for these aspiring stars, an entertaining night out for their supporters and a chance to donate to a worthy cause. Danielle Hibbert, Fundraising Manager for Mencap in Northern Ireland says, “This year’s Y-Factor is taking place on one night only and without a doubt will be bigger and better than ever before! We are delighted to have sign ups from local businesses such as Asda, Oxford Economics, Optical Express, Sky & Almac and can’t wait to see which company has the most hidden talent and the most supportive colleagues! We are thrilled to be supported by

such generous local businesses and as with any of our fundraisers, all the money raised in Northern Ireland is spent in Northern Ireland, supporting both children and adults with learning disabilities and their families and carers. This is a unique and entertaining event and we would encourage everyone to come along, or if you are feeling daring, there are still a few spaces left for singers so sign up today!” Fundraising is a vital part of Mencap’s work, and The Y-Factor is just one of the charity’s many exciting and innovative opportunities to help raise funds for Mencap whilst experiencing amazing personal achievements. For further information on The Y-Factor, please contact Danielle Hibbert on tel: 028 9069 0159, email: yfactorni@mencap.org.uk or visit the Facebook page at www.facebook.com/mencapchallengesni.

Galgorm Resort and Spa Taps into Growing Trend of Short Engagement

N

orthern Ireland’s leading wedding destination, Galgorm Resort and Spa, has tapped into the growing mating trend of short engagements with the introduction of the ‘Whirlwind Romance’ wedding package. The Ballymena Resort, favoured by many couples as a dream wedding destination, announced the launch of the specially tailored package to cater for an increasing number of couples who are lessening the time between the proposal and ceremony. The specially reduced package, designed for couples whose booking is made within 6 months of their wedding day, offers a complete wedding package priced from £7000 for 70 guests Brief engagements are also proving popular amongst celebrity couples with one of the most famous betrothals of 2011, Prince William and Kate Middleton’s, lasting less than six months before they exchanged vows at Westminster Abbey. Eva Longoria has also recently declared that she doesn’t believe in long engagements saying, “People think engagement is another step. It’s not another step. You’re single and then you’re married. The engagement is the planning party. So I always agree with short engagements.”

22

March 2012

Sales and Marketing Manager Beth Swindlehust is predicting that Galgorm’s upcoming Bridal Open Day on Sunday 4th March will see a large uptake of the offer: “We are currently seeing an abundance of shorter engagements which reflect modern day courtship and mating trends. A lot of our wedding couples have been in a relationship, if not living together, for many years and a prolonged engagement seems pointless. Also as we offer couples the complete wedding package, working with a number of selective and highly respected experts in their field, it allows us to take the stress out of many of your arrangements, making the planning process is so much easier and therefore allowing you both to focus on what really matters, each other! “With 2012 being a leap year, we are also expecting to welcome a few brides-to-be who have been the ones to pop the question and have been waiting a long time for the opportunity to do so. We’re keen to offer these brides a package that will lessen the wait-time between the proposal and ceremony.” To celebrate the launch of the ‘Whirlwind Romance’ wedding package, Galgorm Resort and Spa have announced a £10,000 Dream Wedding giveaway competition in association with their specialist partners. The competition will only be open to enter at the Bridal Open Day on Sunday 4th March between 1 -6 pm, and offers a complete Wedding Package that includes photography by the Award Winning Photographer Michael McKay, flowers by Sally’s Floral Studio, music by Arco String Quartet and Wedding Band ‘Curve,’ & Wedding Cake supplied by Heavenly Cakes and Favours, along with much, much more!

Catwalk Coup I

t’s a fashion fusion that Northern Irish ladies have been waiting for and it’s all thanks to premiere style event, Belfast FASHIONWEEK. Leading fashion e-tailer Boohoo.com has just been confirmed as headlining the high street show on Friday 16 March. And as well as showing the collection on the catwalk, the online retailer is also planning to open a pop-up boutique at the shows – a move which is guaranteed to wow West Coast Cooler FASHIONWEEK audiences who don’t normally get to touch and feel the online retailers’ clothes in this way. Cathy Martin, Belfast FASHIONWEEK Director said: “Bringing boohoo.com to FASHIONWEEK is a unique opportunity that we’re very excited about – it’s a catwalk coup! “The brand is popular right across the island of Ireland, so it’s a great way to bring the fashion to life on our catwalks. We expect a lot of fashion conscious ladies to be in the audience spotting key pieces to wear for upcoming holidays, parties and day-to-day living.” Katie Curran from boohoo.com said: “One of the things fans of boohoo.com love is our ability to stay on trend at affordable prices. We know ladies like to look a million dollars, but, times being what they are, the fashion budget has taken a hammering, however that doesn’t mean shoppers still can’t look their gorgeous best.

24

March 2012

“That’s the beauty of boohoo.com’s offering – you can afford to shop every month, be the envy of your friends with your bang up-to-date looks, and because we’re online, you don’t have to worry about what the weather’s doing, the expense and inconvenience of getting to and from the shops or suffer the stress of a sometimes hectic high street!” Audience members at this season’s High Street night will also get the chance to shop online at the show as the boohoo.com Pod makes its FASHIONWEEK debut. Katie continued: “Being an online business we thought it only right that our fans had the opportunity to order what they see on the catwalk directly from the show so we are bringing the FASHIONWEEK Pod to Belfast making the show a truly interactive experience for audience members.” The full show schedule is available online at www.belfastfashionweek.com along with details of this season’s trends plus links to all participant retailers and sponsors. Catwalk tickets, which cost £15.00 (or £20 for a limited number of exclusive front row seats) are available from the Belfast Welcome Centre on 02890246609 or via the website. Ticket price includes a fabulous goodie bag and a refreshing West Coast Cooler.

Titanic Gala Ball

B

elfast-born singer Brian Kennedy will take centre stage at a glittering gala ball at the new Titanic Belfast building, hosted by local company Legacy Wealth, to mark the 100th anniversary of the world’s most famous ship - and raise funds for the Ulster Cancer Foundation (UCF). The Irish themed ball is the first charitable event to be held at Northern Ireland’s most exciting and unique new venue. Joyce Savage, UCF’s Head of Appeals and Marketing, said, “We are delighted that Legacy Wealth is hosting this fabulous evening for the Ulster Cancer Foundation, and at such an iconic landmark. The 100th anniversary of the Titanic is an exciting occasion for the whole community. We are thrilled to have a central role in the festivities and at the same time raise vital funds to help cancer patients and their families across Northern Ireland. “This will be the first opportunity for many people to see the amazing facilities Titanic Belfast has to offer. In addition, we have an exceptional line-up of artists for guests to enjoy and hope that everyone will want to join us at this stunning location for a wonderful night

out.” The gala ball is the concept of Legacy Wealth Director Keith Liggett, who has already raised funds for UCF by running the New York marathon on his 40th birthday last November. Keith said, “As a Director of Legacy Wealth, a local company that specialises in helping clients protect their financial affairs, I all too often come across families and individuals coping with the consequences of cancer. Unfortunately employees of Legacy Wealth and their families have also been affected by cancer and sadly a friend and colleague recently lost her brave fight against this dreadful disease. “She and others had talked about the good work that the Ulster Cancer Foundation does for patients and their families in the local community so I felt drawn to supporting this charity,” he said. “I had the idea of organising the gala ball as a way of raising as much money as possible for the charity with the support of our extensive bank of both Corporate and Private clients throughout Northern Ireland. “Legacy Wealth is known for its exceptional client experience and, in keeping with our reputation, has secured a first class venue and line up of local talent for an evening which promises to be memorable for all and hopefully raise lots of money for UCF.” The evening will get off to a sparkling start with a champagne reception and include entertainment from Irish dance troupe Celtic Storm, traditional singers Tully and dancing to one of Ireland’s top live bands Electric Avenue. New York Fashion Week Street Style Jenny McFarlane While the runways were full of fresh F/W 2012 treats, outside New York Fashion Week, the sidewalks were no different. Pre-show, fashionistas posed for photographs, flaunting an abundance of fashion-forward looks. From lush leather and bright, bold colors to striking spring prints and retro-inspired pieces, these city girls had it all. The looks were a feast for the eyes! Here, Jenny focuses on a few of the best that NYFW had to offer and provides her look ideas for each.

Pattern Mash-Up Mixing eclectic patterns and prints was the order of the day at NYFW. Clash polka dots, stripes, bold colour and tie-dye techniques for a decidedly chic tribal mash-up. Don’t forget the red lippy!

Spa Sleuth Cathy Martin

This month our spa sleuth Cathy Martin put her feet up – quite literally – and treated herself to some very different experiences for her tootsies.

I

f you’re one of those people who clean before the cleaner comes, then you will understand where I’m coming from when I say I wanted to get my feet sorted before going for a pedicure. So when I was invited to Luxe Day Spa in Blackwood Golf Club near my home for one of their deluxe pedi’s, I panicked, because I couldn’t imagine getting the aesthetic, gorgeous treatment done on my feet in their (then) current state. The loveable Norn Iron (or is it Ulster Scots?) moniker for feet is kebs, and mine really felt like kebs back then, so my sister, my mother and I all checked in to Belfast Foot Care on the Newtownards Road for an overhaul each. Based at the home of podiatrist Deborah O’Hara, the clinic is compact but big on treatments and professional advice. Within minutes of sitting in the podiatry chair I learnt that I had remnants of a verruca on one foot (eeewww! - it’s gross that I didn’t even know it had been there in the first place) and a touch of the final stages of athlete’s foot on another heel. Heel? I thought athlete’s foot only occurred in between the toes and only happened to people who do sport. I was flabbergasted! I couldn’t believe my feet had been so unhealthy (although I was also kind of impressed at my immune system working it out and getting rid of the buggers!) Deborah reassured me that both ailments often go undetected and she sees hun-

dreds of veruccas a month, so I didn’t feel like a dirty outcast so much. But I was glad I went to her before going to Luxe I can tell you! The other thing she told me was that my second metatarsal bone sat lower than the others on my foot, which explains why I experience excruciating pain when wearing high heels, all this within a twenty minute visit, plus there was no hard sell of product and no pushing for future appointments, which was nice. She just buffed and rubbed and scraped and filed and within half an hour my tootsies were looking and feeling a whole lot smoother. The experience was not in any way painful, in fact it was all very pleasant and we talked about heels and how to wear them and when to take a break from them. All in all, a great learning experience which also had the benefit of leaving my feet feeling fabulous. So just a week later my feet felt ready for the luxury of Luxe and I walked the country mile or two to the salon which is located in the heart of Blackwood Golf Club. Blackwood is a public course with a great driving range, so if you’re a golf fan (or your partner is) then you can opt for a round before or after your treatment or just let hubby practice his swing while you do your thing… On arrival at the spa I changed into my robe for complete relaxation and went straight to the treatment room where Kerry, my therapist, got stuck in. She settled me in to the massage bed and wrapped me up so the

Ulster Life treatment really felt like a luxury massage and then started off with toenail filing. Cuticle softener was then applied and left on while she scrubbed away hard skin (she was impressed with my smooth feet so I had to confess with my podiatry visit the week before). My feet and lower legs were then exfoliated followed by a sumptuous massage using some really thick and creamy ultra-moisturising cream and it was at this point I feel asleep, albeit briefly, as the next stage of ‘work’ kicked in and Kerry concentrated on pushing back the cuticles to encourage nail growth and make room for the polish which was to come next…. And so to the finishing touches, I had a prescription base coat, followed by two coats of gorgeous colour and then a diamond top coat with a layer of Phenomenon oil applied around each toe nail. I didn’t ask what that does but it felt good at the time because I drifted off to sleep again for another ten minutes! So let your feet do the talking and step in the direction of a good chiropodist and pedi specialist to really look after your toosies. They are a much forgotten part of the body and with sandal wearing weather ahead, it’s time to start thinking about getting them in shape. For at home solutions, I’m a fan of the Ped Egg (available at Boots and other pharmacies and beauty stores) for removing hard skin and I also like the Body Shop’s foot treats. For nail colour I highly recommend the amazing colours from Dior for this season – check out Incognito for wearing with this season’s pastels and nude shoes, or Riviera if you are wearing citrus or block colours.

regarding a big boat that was fine when it left here. From a foodie point of view, one of the most exciting things in my opinion is the recently opened Titanic Pub & Kitchen, part of the well known Frames complex. I stumbled upon this hidden gem one Saturday afternoon by chance after a particularly heavy shopping session. It’s slightly off the beaten track but its well worth seeking out. The décor inside the venue pays homage to the Edwardian period and wouldn’t have looked out of place on the Titanic itself. It’s very atmospheric with dim lighting and iconic images of the Titanic lining the walls. There’s an abundance of seating areas - from private tables and chairs to bar stools lining the large bar area. We decided to grab one of the cosy booths by the windows and were given a menu by one of the friendly waitresses. Staff at the Titanic Pub & Kitchen are extremely helpful and friendly and you can tell

they are genuinely nice, not just looking for a tip! The menu consists of traditional and tasty favourites such as steak, fish and chips and beef and chicken burgers. After working up quite an appetite following a particularly strenuous shopping session, I decided to go for the char grilled chicken burger with thrice cooked chips. My famished dining partner plumped for the bacon and cheese burger, which again came with the chef’s specialty thrice cooked chips. After settling in to our comfy and spacious booth we decided liquid replenishments were greatly called for. Titanic Pub & Kitchen have one of the most impressive cocktail lists I have come across in a long time.

Ulster Life a quick look in the bap and noticed the two rashers of bacon were cooked extra crispy and the burger was topped with melted cheese as well as the usual salad stuff. I asked the dining partner what he thought of the bacon done quite so crispy and he told me it gave an amazing bacon-y taste and really added to the texture of the burger - insightful! The beauty of Titanic Pub & Kitchen is that it’s simple food but cooked to perfection. Good, honest, wholesome food not spoiled by fancy sauces or distracting jus to hide the flavour. It’s also very well priced. Both of our meals were priced at a reasonable £8.95 each, which for the portion sizes was really good value. Despite being almost fit to burst, we decided (purely in the interests of research) to share a dessert. We went for the white chocolate and raspberry panna cotta which came with homemade shortbread. There’s only one word to describe this dish - orgasmic! So to sum up Titanic Pub & Kitchen - fantastic food, super staff and cracking cocktails; everything about this Titanic is first class!

Jamie prepares everything from scratch using only the freshest ingredients and you really can taste the difference. Our food duly arrived and I couldn’t wait to get tasting the thrice cooked chips which looked like perfection. I’m happy to report that they tasted every bit as good as they looked. Extra crispy and a glorious golden colour these are the daddy of all chips. Crispy on the outside yet white and fluffy on the inside - they melt in your mouth. If I was on death row these chips would definitely be part of my last supper! The char grilled chicken burger was equally delicious. Whilst all too often this can prove to be a tasteless choice, this one was packed full of flavour. A fresh chicken breast (no processed rubbish here) with a gorgeously charred taste to it, in between a soft floury white bap with lettuce and tomato. The main thing that really comes across with the Titanic Pub & Kitchen’s food is the quality and freshness of the ingredients. Right down to the smallest details, everything is fresh and tasty. My food buddy was equally as impressed. His bacon and cheese burger looked fabulous and he declared it to be ’amazing’ in between mouthfuls. Given how quickly he polished off the dish I’d say he wasn’t joking. Before it was wolfed down, I managed to grab

PUTTING YOUR FACE IN THE FRAME

F

or many years now the choices for bespectacled ladies and gents, who like to play with their image and still look good, has increased considerably as high end brands and celebrities like Jonny Depp and Katie Perry put themselves in the frame. Not that long ago, it was Deirdre Barlow and Denis Taylor who first sprung to mind when thinking about the choices for those who had to wear glasses for medical reasons or purely just for vanity. But not anymore, according to eyewear designer William Morris London. Concerns about frames accentuating the shape of your face, or being the right shade to compliment the colour of your eyes, took a back seat as worries about the pitying stares and sniggers of friends and loved ones, too kind to point out the glaringly obvious fashion faux pas on the end of your nose, took hold. Anyone who has gone through the shame of having to wear the ridiculously unfashionable,

sky blue NHS glasses will tell you – the shape, colour and style of glasses definitely does matter. And not only that – the right pair of glasses can make you appear more intelligent, slimmer, younger and even make you more attractive. Ask any sexy secretary whose look is synonymous with a perfectly angled dip of her black framed spectacles! To help you see the light, Belfast FASIONWEEK’s official eyewear provider, William Morris London, will cut through the jargon with some practical advice and helpful hints for those wanting to update their look with the perfect pair of glasses. Robert Morris, the founder of William Morris London said: “For women, as well as men, glasses can compliment an entire outfit but for ladies, there are a number of other important elements that need to be considered; eyebrow

March 2012

43

Ulster Life shape, hair style, hair length and make-up. “Eyebrows, in particular, frame the eyes, so it’s important to keep them trimmed and in control as the glasses will draw close attention to that area. “One mistake that a lot of people make when out buying glasses for themselves is to focus on the style and shape they like the look of, or their favourite colour, rather than what best suits them. Remember that the shape of the frames

can make or break the overall effect of how the glasses will look in relation to the shape of the wearer’s face. “William Morris London has a very large selection of frame and lens styles to choose from including London, Retro, Black Label, Young Wills, Classic and Eternal ranges which can be found in all fashion conscious independent opticians across Northern Ireland.”

WHAT FRAME BEST SUITS YOUR FACE SHAPE The Round face With a soft round shaped face definition is key so slim your cheeks with a frame in a slightly wider style as soft but angular styles will break up the roundness. Cameron Diaz favours glasses with a smaller lens as anything too wide could make your face look chubby if it’s circular. Stay away from round frames, opt for Square and rectangular silhouettes instead. For men, solid acetate framework in dark colours and prints will keep things masculine and create defined outlines. Cat-eyed and rectangular frames work for ladies whilst the William Morris Retro London, square style frames offer a unisex look.

The Square face

often the forehead is slightly wider than the jaw, which curves gently and the cheekbones are high meaning you can be adventurous as this face shape looks good in most styles. However, medium to large sized frames are best for the oval face. Metal framework will soften but make sure that the arms don’t sit too low on your face.

The Long face Opt for round or square shaped frames as you don’t want the pea head effect and keep away from anything too angular. Supra, oval and oversized frames are perfect; but make sure the outer corners run parallel with your temples and cheek bones; the tear drop shape will help accentuate those cheek bones.

If you have a strong jawline with wide cheekbones, oversized and curvy styles work well while creams and neutral tones will help to soften. Oval and round frames look great edged with a solid acetate rim. For a more masculine approach, metal framework with dark lenses also look great on square faces. Rectangular shaped frames with soft edges are a classic unisex option.

The Triangular face

The Oval face

A heart shaped face, like Halle Berry’s, which has a broad forehead, tapering to a small neat chin and mouth, means you should choose smaller

An oval face is well balanced and softly rounded;

44

March 2012

Triangular shaped faces look great with a more quirky, retro shaped pair of glasses, such as rectangular or ‘cat-eyed’ style. Choose a pair which angle outwards towards the top corner. Cat-eyed frames look great in classic tortoise and creams for a feminine option.

The Heart shaped face

Ulster Life styles without decorative detail on the temples. Cat-eyed frames look great and rectangular frames will sit neatly on a heart shaped face but you should avoid chunky frames. Robert continued: “Skin tone is also important when choosing which shade of both frame and lens to go for. “A lighter skin tone will benefit from something that will pop and compliment without drowning it or drawing attention to the lighter shade. “And if colour is something that usually has you running to the monotone shaded hills then my advice would be to take baby steps towards embracing all the colours of the rainbow. “This involves trying some frames with a hint of colour inside the stem, seeing how you feel wearing them, and then progressing to full colour effect. “Our stockists have dedicated teams of optical advisors who always try and give open and honest feedback to customers which is especially helpful to people shopping on their own or who can’t see themselves as showroom frames aren’t in their prescription.”

When addressing hair colour Robert has some key things to look out for. “If you regularly change the colour of your hair and like to stockpile your eyewear, try and have a broad range of colours that will help compliment your style – this will take a bit of forethought but with fashion there are always compromises and our ranges at William Morris London are so vast we always have the perfect pair. “For those with fair hair I recommend softer pastel shades, a key look for Spring Summer; more defined frames will work best with black or brown hair but as ever, our Optical Advisors will always help you see the fashionable you.” The full show schedule is available online at www.facebook.com/belfastfw or at www.belfastfashionweek.com along with details of this season’s trends plus links to all participant retailers and sponsors. Love your Legs Love the right Tights

elfast FASHIONWEEK is gearing up for its Spring/Summer season of catwalk shows and satellite events featuring retailers and beauty providers from all over Northern Ireland. And whilst most people’s eyes will be on the gorgeous dresses and accessories sashaying elegantly down the catwalk at the Europa FASHIONWEEK centre on the 14, 15 and 16 March, the official legwear partner, The Right Tights, wants to remind fashionistas that pairing the right colour, design and style of tights or socks with an outfit can take a look from summer smart, to summer goddess. Emma French, who owns and runs online fashion business TheRightTights.co.uk from her base in Dunadry, said: “Here in Northern Ireland we don’t have the luxury of being completely carefree about our outfit choices because of our unpredictable weather. But whatever the elements decide to do there are certain trends, depending on the time of year, that are only too predictable when it comes to legwear. “To be really on trend this season try some pastel pinks, yellows and blues and for the adventurous lady, try tights with delicate little

46

March 2012

embellishments, like bows - perfect for a summer wedding or garden party. “I’m as guilty as the next woman of playing it safe with opaque tights, as they go with everything, but when I started experimenting with colour I loved the results. “On the site, we have tights by Pamela Mann and a very exciting range from Jonathan Aston, which I love, that will allow ladies to play about with their look. “I’d also recommend having some anklets and knee highs in the drawer as these can help add an accent to an outfit without covering the whole leg. Jonathan Aston, Pretty Polly and Charnos have beautiful options available on our website.

Ulster Life “We also have ranges like Aristoc, Elbeo, Henry Holland, Levante, Vixen, Silky and Emma Jane - the choices for ladies are massive so my advice is - be brave with colour - you might just like the results.” The RightTights.co.uk resident expert, Emma, shares some of her professional pearls of wisdom to help make your legs work with your outfit this spring summer. DO - pick a hemline which sets your legs off and ideally team with a pair of heels to really show what Mother Nature gave you. DON’T - overdo it on teaming patterned tights with a patterned dress as this can make your look confusing. DO – for shorter ladies try and match your shoes to your tights, or a colour as close as possible, as this will make your legs look longer. DON’T - be afraid to try a bright colour or pattern with your LBD but bear in mind that a very bold pattern can make legs appear larger. DO - mix colours with neutrals as this creates an understated feminine look but try to stick to one palette as lots of colours can make your look just too busy.

Fashionistas with an eye on their style budget will be pleased to know that loyalty is rewarded atTheRightTights.co.uk. “When new customers sign up for an account they receive loyalty points with every purchase which they can accumulate and spend on our site.”, said Emma. Ms Malone

You’re never alone when it comes to fashion dilemmas. Dear Ms Malone, Now that we have moved into February and spring is around the corner, hopefully we will be seeing a little more sun! I am fed up with my big heavy winter outfits but I’m not sure how to look more fashionable and spring like in the transitional weather. What sort of colours do you suggest? I have a pale complexion and light hair so bold patterns don’t suit me. SpringFlorals Dear SpringFlorals, Who says you can’t embrace bold patterns? This season is all about refreshing graphic patterns like florals and tribal prints, and if you wear them with confidence, they would be a great contrast to pale skin and light hair. Colour is key in this season’s trends. I love the Easter greens, sunny yellows, flirty peaches and pastel pinks. Try Topshop’s range of lacy dresses for a feminine look. If you are feeling bold wear several pastel shades in a colour-block pattern, or create a chic look choose one shade and go head to toe. A monochrome pastel palette would look great on your fair complexion if you add a pop of bold eye shadow in a contrasting tone. I love this look from Belfast FASHIONWEEK’s trends shoot. Model Jayne is rocking all of the season’s

50

March 2012

trends including pastel colour-blocking and a bold contrasting eye. If you want to replicate the look, Jayne is wearing a Manoush Pom Pom Bouse Blouse, £295 at Candy Plum, Carly Cigarette Trouser, £20 & Billie Coral Suedette Platform, £30 at Boohoo.com, and Powder Pink Peplum Jacket, POR at Maria Cardenas. To glam up your pastel look for night time, add a bit of sparkle with metallic sequins! Dear Ms Malone, One of my favourite trends during the winter was the glamorous sequin dresses, tops, and skirts that were in every shop. Unfortunately, I never committed to purchasing one, and now I think I’ve missed my opportunity! Are sequins still available in shops for the spring and summer? If so, how can I make this look fresh for the spring? Sexy Sequins Dear Sexy Sequins, Lucky for you, it seems that this season sequins are here to stay! Sequins have been spotted in almost all of the high street shops, including H&M which has transformed its gold, black, and silver sequins into springtime navy and a multi-coloured astel shift. For a special occasion, have a look at French Connection’s Shelly Sequins Dress, £260. This dress combines pink, grey, and black sequins for a head-to-toe glammed-up look for spring. Cornmarket’s newly re-launched French

Ulster Life Connection store stocks a myriad of glitzy garments that are great for a night on the town. The best part of wearing a dress with this much embellishment is that all you have to do is grab a simple clutch and a pair of nude shoes, and let the sparkles on the dress do the talking for you. Don’t miss out again on a spangled purchase, because I can’t guarantee that this trend will continue into the next season! Dear Ms Malone, I know that ethnic prints are in this season, but my personal style is far from tribal. How can I wear on-trend prints without abandoning my own look? Wannabe Warrior Dear Wannabe, You can tap into your inner-warrior woman with bold prints and still remain loyal to your personal style by incorporating traditional prints in modern and feminine shapes. To avoid jumping too far into the deep-end with bold prints, wear just one new print and blend it with your older, more ‘you’ pieces. If a strong ethnic print doesn’t suit you, why not take advantage of this season’s scarf prints? These bold but feminine prints were spotted on the Spring/Summer catwalks for Dolce and Gabbana and have been adapted for the high street. This babydollshaped scarf print dress from Red Herring at Debenham’s in CastleCourt, £35, embraces a lovely feminine look while still packing a powerful punch with pattern. Simply pair the look with some sexy black heels and a structured blazer or leather jacket for a Boho-chic look for day or night. To contrast the earthiness of the pattern, mix in some modern metallics using bangles and a clutch to modernise an ancient look. March 2012

Zoë Boomer Zoë Boomer is a Northern Ireland born, London based fashion designer recognised for her love of feminine style and simplicity, which can effortlessly transform from daytime chic to evening glamour. After graduating from the London College of Fashion, the Zoë Boomer label was launched in 2006 and has already gained a loyal celebrity following, including Natasha Bedingfield, Zoe Salmon, Leigh Arnold and Laura Michelle Kelly. A number of her dresses were also short-listed by Madonna to appear in her movie Filth and Wisdom. She has even been described as ‘the next Stella McCartney’ by a leading Irish newspaper. Originally from Lisburn, she now lives in Putney with her husband of almost 5 years, Jay, where they share their home with new dog, a Labradoodle called Phoenix Winston and cat, Vegas. Zoë said: “I work in luxury fabric and fluid movement is the essence of the label. I love creating beautifully tailored timeless pieces which reflect romance, beauty and elegance. “I admire Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen’s style as they always mix and match and are not into things looking perfect. I especially like the oversize look as I’m not a fan of things looking too fitted and matching.” Outside of work Zoë likes to relax with a DVD on the sofa, take a stroll along the King’s Road, have lunch at Sketch, as a treat, or visit Petersham tearooms for coffee but she does love the glamorous side of the fashion industry. “I really enjoy working on photo shoots especially in wonderful and stunning locations around the UK. The clothes just seem to come alive on the models and it’s always a thrill to see what started as an idea in your head in the flesh. “I also love the excitement of a live catwalk show – they can be very stressful at the beginning but once the models start working the catwalk wearing your latest collection – it’s one of the best feelings ever.”

Lisa McCabe Lisa McCabe, the designer behind Northern Irish label Nor Lisa, is considered one of Northern Ireland’s most promising up-and-coming designers. At only 23 years old, she is a newcomer to the fashion industry, but her vintage-inspired designs and stunning prints are making her a talent worth watching. Lisa comes from Enniskillen where, from a young age, her passion for fashion was nurtured. “I was always aware from a very young age that I was quite creative and quirky,” Lisa says. In school, she found herself drawn to the art department, where she spent most of her time drawing, painting, and creating objects and sculptures.

March 2012

53

Ulster Life She attended the University of Ulster for Fashion and Textile design and started entering her work into design competitions and fashion shows for the experience. She was a top 10 finalist in, Form and Fusion, an all-Ireland design competition sponsored by Coca-Cola. Creating prints is one of Lisa’s favourite things to do when designing and something she has become known for are her vintage silhouettes and unique textile designs. A gorgeous spitfire airplane print has become Lisa’s signature and is featured in many of her label’s designs. “I love the excitement of working with prints and fabrics. I have to admit that Versace’s prints are my favourites but I find inspiration everywhere, from celebrity trend-setters like Beyonce and Dita Von Teese to looks I spot on the street.”, said Lisa. While the life of an up-and-coming designer can be manic, Lisa has remained grounded by making trips home to Enniskillen to visit family, spending time with her boyfriend, and doing work for charity.

Maria Cardenas Maria, based in the Mournes, makes clothes that are ‘wearable, and elegant’ and that are ‘made to last’ with emphasis on the subtle, edited look. She is a third generation tailor from Columbia so, as you would expect, she produces expertly cut garments in gorgeous luxury fabrics using techniques and knowledge passed down through her family. Maria said, “Being based among the Mournes, I have been able to keep my feet on the ground over the last few years which is important to me when designing my collections. “I want to keep my designs and materials firmly rooted in the traditions of Ireland whilst drawing on the colours of South America that I grew up with.” Maria’s designs are based on simple, well defined shapes, developed over many years and made in various materials such as Irish Linen, Tasar Silk, and Cotton. “My designs are classic, timeless but practical and wearable which I love. They’re for modern women who like to wear the best and feel accentuated in an understated way. “My clothes can be worn to the glitziest of garden parties, meetings with clients, or to a family wedding or celebration which calls for something memorable that the wearer will feel at home in.” She features in the Masters of Linen brochure, produced by the Paris and New York based organization to show off the best in European Linen; she is a designer/member of the very exclusive Irish Linen Guild; she sources materials for her craft locally (where possible) and endeavours to produce a soft ecological footprint. As well as Belfast FASHIONWEEK, Maria has also shown at fashion weeks in Milan, Croatia, the US and in Dublin. The full show schedule is available online at www.facebook.com/belfastfw or at www.belfastfashionweek.com along with details of this season’s trends plus links to all participant retailers and sponsors. Catwalk tickets, which cost £15.00 (or £20 for a limited number of exclusive front row seats) are available from the Belfast Welcome Centre on 02890246609 or via the website. TOP TIPS FOR FIRST TIME BUYERS First-time buyers previously priced out of the property market are now being presented new opportunities to own a home - thanks to lower priced properties on the market combined with better mortgage deals available for borrowers with small deposits. John Minnis Estate Agents, which has two branches, specialising in both the residential sales and lettings throughout Belfast, North Down, Bangor and Ards Peninsula, shares with us his top tips to first time buyers entering the property market:

1

Speak to a financial advisor This should always be your first port of call. Your financial advisor will give you the best JOHNMINNIS.CO.UK options available to you inyour current situation. ‘LIKE’ us for industry news, propertylevels info, competitions & prizes. Due to the increased of transactions taking place, there are recently new lenders with more products available within the market. This has c reated a little bit more competition resulting in availability of better deals. Your financial advisor will have these at their fingertips, taking all of the leg-work out for you. At John Minnis Estate Agents we can assist you with independent financial advice through one of our trusted partners. BELFAST/NORTH DOWN: T 028 9042 8888

BANGOR/ARDS PENINSULA: T 028 9188 8881

2

Know about the hidden costs As a first time buyer, you want to make your money work for you, so you should be aware of the hidden costs involved stamp duty, solicitor’s fees, valuation fees and moving costs. Stamp duty has been receiving a lot of press recently, as the Chancellor George Osborne took

56

March 2012

the decision in the 2011 Autumn Statement to reintroduce stamp duty after a two year ‘holiday’ - this is set to return on 24th March 2012, however this shouldn’t deter first time buyers as it is still a fantastic time to buy with some great value out there. Stamp Duty - the facts This is a government tax that you will be liable for when you purchase a property, and is paid through your solicitor. It kicks in at £125,000 - above this figure and there is a 1% fee applied -i.e. £1,250.00 Houses priced at over £250,000 are subject to a 3% fee. Over £500,000 and you are looking at a 4% fee.

3

Decide where you want to live... When embarking on the journey of buying your first home; decide where it is you want to live. Take everything into consideration - not just the house. Location, Location, Location is not just a TV

Ulster Life property show, it is the single most important factor you should consider when making a house purchase. The further you go out from main cities or towns, yes, the prices do get more affordable, however the cost of living may go up. Consider the commute -if you work in the city or town, you will spend more time in the car travelling to work and amenities - this will result in more money spent on fuel. Rekke the area as a resident; what are the rail and road links like? How do the schools compare? What are the local amenities, access to healthcare etc - are they up to your standards? Remember you are making a lifestyle choice as well buying a property. The prices can fluctuate but the location will not.

5

Get out there and view! Do your research online and visit your high street estate agencies. Make yourself known to agents, tell them what you are looking for and that you are qualified, i.e. you have spoken to your financial advisor and are in a position to buy. Give them your details. Your agent will be your ally and confident during this process. Once you have done your research and decide upon possibilities, make appointments and go and view them. Your gut instinct will usually tell you if it is right for you in your first visit, your second visit you are able to see the property more clearly and make an unbiased decision.View as many houses as possible so you have a bench-mark - don’t just jump in and put

an offer on the first house you see. And don’t be afraid to come back for a second look.

6

Write a budget plan and stick to it There are many factors you need to consider when working out what you can really afford on a monthly basis. These include ‘money in’ such as your salary, gifts, interest from savings and any other income, and your costs ‘out’, such as food and drink, rent or mortgage payments and entertainment. If you add up your personal and home costs and take the total away from your income, then you should know if you can manage, have a shortfall or have any funds left over.

7

A Buying Buddy Taking out a joint mortgage - buying with a friend, parents or partner can make the process easier and ease the financial pressure. But it is important to remember that relationships can change, so you might want to get legal advice before embarking on any joint purchase. If you do decide to buy with someone else, you may want to get a contract drawn up stating who has contributed what, and what you will do if someone wants to move out or sell up - this makes it a cleaner process for all involved. A

mixed bag this month, which itself is a testament to the breadth, variety and quality of the local art scene. Interplanetary Revolution, what a name, what an exhibition! Inspired by the 1924 Russian propaganda animation of the same name, this is a project that includes at least two new simultaneous group exhibitions and the reworking of another during its time. A mix of painting, sculpture, animation and performance, highlights of the opening night were a performance by Captain Hate and the introduction of a new currency, ‘Revolutions’, to Belfast. Add some wax coated submarines and a choir and you start to get the picture! This show whets the appetite for a show I am involved with in May. The Warning Art Gallery hosts a group exhibition not for the faint hearted at a yet to be announced venue in Belfast. Focusing on themes of horror and eroticism, the exhibiting artists have been selected for their ability to generate debate surrounding issues such as mortality, gender and sexuality and will contain work that may shock the mainstream audience, so strictly over 18s! More about this next month. Something completely different and the

perfect antidote to the dark days and nights of a grey, cold winter. Tyrella Beach based artist George H. Smyth has just completed work based on Brendan Behan. George’s work, (pictured) is primarily influenced by surrealism and travel and his work hangs in public and private collections in the UK, Europe and America. Using themes of love, time, astronomy and physical attraction, combined with his local landscape, ensure that his paintings pack a visual punch and engage with the viewer on a very subconscious level. More of George’s work can be seen here, www.georgehsmyth.com. My time at the wonderful F.E. McWilliam Gallery ended on a high with a lecture by Paris based fashion critic and editor of Fashion Wire Daily, Godfrey Deeny. A packed gallery, including my partner for the evening, milliner, Grainne Maher, heard Godfrey deliver a fascinating talk entitled ‘The Rise and Fall of John Galliano’. It was great to hear at first hand from someone who is totally immersed in that world and also good that a gallery is crossing over into other areas to attract other audiences. Shows coming up include the first solo show in Belfast by Irish artist Sean Lynch. Running until 16th March, Catalyst Arts showcases the artist’s ongoing DeLorean Progress Report. This exhibition consists of a collection of photographs based around the bankruptcy and aftermath of the DeLorean car factory, which operated in Belfast in the early eighties. Clinton Kirkpatrick’s solo exhibition, ‘I Was Here. I Lived. I Loved’ is at the Waterfront Hall until 24th March. This new exhibition is inspired by Clinton's time spent in Kenya in 2011 and explores notions of identity, connection, colour, imaginative response and existence. Lastly, Colin Davidson’s wonderful portrait exhibition, Transmission, opens in the Oliver Sears Gallery in Dublin on March 20th.

The lucky lady is Lea-Anne McDonald from Belfast who now can enjoy the run-up to her big day as she chooses dresses for both herself and her lucky mother from the store’s stunning collections. A lawyer based in Liverpool, Lea-Anne will also be featured on Blush’s advertising campaign for the next twelve months following a one-on-one photoshoot with renowned fashion photographer Khara Pringle. On the day itself, when she will tie the knot with Neil Crossman at Belfast Castle, Lea-Anne will benefit from having her hair professionally styled by Ruairi Curran from Blue Hairdressing and make-up by Caoimhe Curran. Magazine. In the opulent setting of the Private Dining Room at the Merchant Hotel, Cathy said, “As judges, we had a particularly tough time trying to pick a winner out of the high calibre of entrants from all over Ireland. We found Lea-Anne encapsulated all that a Blush Bride should be in terms of her natural beauty and dedication to the whole process.” Owner of Blush, Aileen Wilson said of the winner, “We are absolutely thrilled that Lee-Anne will be the face of our advertising campaign for the next 12 months. She has shown such enthusiasm and a real sense of professionalism in any dealings we have already had with her so

60

March 2012

I am really excited about working with her this year.” After hearing the announcement that she would be the new Face of Blush for 2012 Lea-Anne said, “I am still in a state of disbelief that they chose me, I keep having to double check! I am beyond delighted and honoured to represent Blush Boutique as it has the best selection to choose from out of all the shops that I visited and the service from the girls is second to none. I truly am over the moon.” The application process kicked off last Summer and saw hundreds of hopeful fiancées from all over Ireland vie for the prestigious title for this highly prestigious store which sees women travel hundreds of miles to view their exclusive collections.

Look Permanently Gorgeous with Semi-Permanent Make Up by Judith Mulgrew

J

udith Mulgrew, owner of one of Northern Ireland’s leading laser and beauty clinics Skin Medi-Spa, has added semi-permanent make up to the vast range of beauty and cosmetic treatments she offers to clients. Semi permanent make up is an exclusive and revolutionary treatment whereby natural pigments are inserted into the skin in a process similar to tattooing, to enhance the facial features and allow the client’s natural beauty to shine through. Judith is proud to be one of a handful of individuals trained in this specialism in Belfast. Lasting between two to five years, the gentle micro pigmentation is inserted into the lower layer of the skin and gradually fades over time without smudging or bleeding into the skin. The treatment is of particular benefit to those who are unable to apply make up due to allergies or problems such as Multiple Sclerosis or Parkinson’s Disease. Semi-permanent make up is also a convenient option for women on-the-go who may not have time for daily make up application but would still like to look fresh throughout the day. The procedure is virtually painless and has virtually no side effects other than slight redness and swelling. Semi-permanent make up is available as an eyebrow enhancer, both top and bottom eye liner, lip blush and liner and beauty spots, providing a flawless base to wear a bare face or mix with traditional make up for more dramatic make up looks . Clients will be invited for a consultation with Judith prior to the treatment to ensure the most natural colour of lip blush,

66

March 2012

shape of eyebrow or strength and size of beauty spot. Judith says, “The semi-permanent make up technique is a very specialised and exclusive treatment and I am thrilled that I am now able to offer this to my clients. I have wanted to train in semi-permanent make up for years now so to be able to do it now is very exciting. Not everyone can wear make up every day and can be left feeling self-conscious and unhappy with their appearance. Plus some of my clients have plucked their eyebrows to the point where they don’t grow anymore, for example, so semi-permanent make up is perfect to reintroduce some definition to the face.” For more information or to book an appointment at Skin Medi-Spa call 028 9068 1066 or visitwww.skinmedispa.co.uk.

Ulster Life Profile

Angela O'Neill Angela O’Neill is the Research and Development Radiographer at the Cancer Centre, one of a small number of specialist posts funded by Friends of the Cancer Centre, the official charity for Northern Ireland’s regional centre of excellence in cancer care based at the Belfast City Hospital complex. What was your first job? I started out as Clinical Therapeutic Radiographer at the Northern Ireland Centre for Clinical Oncology at Belvoir Park Hospital back in 1999. What does ‘radiotherapy research and development’ entail? We investigate, then put in place, new treatment techniques and technologies to improve radiotherapy treatment and, ultimately, make not only the treatment itself but also the eventual outcomes better for our patients. Radiotherapy R&D is a growing specialism and an exciting one to be involved in. How did you end up doing your current job? I wanted to be more directly involved with the development of improved treatments and where better to have that opportunity than at the new Cancer Centre, Northern Ireland’s centre of excellence? My work contributes to that of a wider radiotherapy research team led by Professor Joe O’Sullivan. I’ve joined some amazing people committed to amazing, important work, but probably the best thing is that they never forget it’s all about the patients. Interestingly my post might not have existed were it not for the charity, Friends of the Cancer Centre which funds the post. People probably know that the charity provides all sorts of ‘extras’ in terms of patient care and comforts and that it often buys equipment which

72

March 2012

wouldn’t ordinarily be Government-funded, but maybe they aren’t quite so aware of its support for R&D. In the research sector we are really grateful for this sort of support, for it’s often the Cinderella of funding … despite its importance and value. What qualifications and qualities does your job require? This is obviously an academic environment and, for us, studying never stops; it’s just part of the job. I have a 2:1 BSc Hons Therapeutic Radiography, and an MSc Medical Physics. Broadly for my role, you need to have worked for a minimum of four years at senior radiographer level and have a Masters degree in Radiation Science or similar. Perhaps the personal qualities are less obvious, but they are no less important. I would say the role needs vision, initiative, critical and analytical thinking, drive, diplomacy, flexibility, dedication and determination. Providing leadership and support to colleagues particularly during periods of change is also important. No matter what qualifications and qualities you may bring to your job, you can still be bowled over at the courage and spirit shown by your patients. Describe your typical working day. Every day is different, which is part of the attraction of the job. I might be working on an R&D proposal for a new treatment technique in the morning; analysing radiotherapy treatment

Ulster Life Profile accuracy data then presenting an R&D proposal to a multi-disciplinary radiotherapy meeting in the afternoon. I also regularly see patients who are involved in research studies or who are considering involvement. What has been the highlight of your role to date? In 2008 I was awarded ‘Young Scientist of the Year’ by the European Society for Radiotherapy & Oncology (ESTRO) for my study of radiographer inter-observer variability when analysing radiotherapy images. I was thrilled at the recognition and really inspired to do more for the future. What’s the most rewarding thing about your job? Research and development is invariably a ‘slow burn’ and there are few ‘Eureka!’ moments. The most rewarding thing is seeing an R&D project which may have taken months or years right through to completion, and knowing that it will have a positive impact on radiotherapy treatments now or in the future. Have you any new projects coming up The Cancer Centre will have a number of new radiotherapy treatment machines installed over the next few months which have the potential to deliver the most accurate, high precision radiotherapy to date in Northern Ireland. Implementing this new technology will occupy a significant proportion of my time and this process will also present new research opportunities. What is the best bit of advice you have ever been given? Whatever you do in life, do it to the best of your ability. Tell is about your household? I have been married to Kieran for ten years and we have one daughter, Eimear, who is 21 months old. Obviously she is the centre of our lives. She’s a great source of relaxation too. When I get home she can make me forget even the most stressful of days! March 2012
