Sonja – a long standing cast member of the Lady Boys of Bangkok chats to UL

The Lady Boys of Bangkok returns to Belfast this November and as always promises to be one of the best nights of the year. For ticket info visit www. myulsterlife.com and buy now to avoid disappointment! So, Tell us about your journey from teenager to today. It was hard growing up, my parents had to work very hard to see me through school and college, they wanted the best for me. I have always enjoyed fashion and performing arts so when I left college I went to work in for a cabaret, it was hard, but I stuck at it and managed to get an audition with The Lady Boys of Bangkok show. I knew if i was successful I would be able to repay my family and look after them in return for what they had done for me. The show offered me a place and I have not looked back since, the experiences and production training have made me 16

WEB | MAG | LIFE

realise my potential as an artiste. So Here I am today; senior cast member and dance captain so I’m the one that calls the extra rehearsals during the tour to keep the routines “tight”… I can be tough but you need to be to maintain the high standards of this show. Did you always want to be a performer? Always! I loved watching films when i was a child and always dreamt of performing on the stage, I always knew that one day I would end up there. What’s the best city you’ve performed in (excluding Belfast of course!!) Apart from Belfast, I love Edinburgh, it was the first city I visited with the show and you know what they say… “your first is always special” (lol) What advice would you give to any young performers reading this? Make sure the audience believe the story you are telling, they need to see it in your eyes and also in your smile.

UL

Describe your ideal day off. Who are you with, where do you eat lunch and what are you drinking? Both family and friends are important to me, without them I don’t think we are complete as people, and on tour my friends are my family. We have all got into having a “cheeky Nando’s” laughing about what’s been happening while we’ve been on tour. Also it’s so easy to stay in touch with our friends and family back home using Facebook and facetime when you have a good Wi-Fi signal! As for drinking I don’t mind a small beer or I like Prosecco. Main Image: Sonja – © Dean Martin Photography 2016 – www.deanmartinphotography.com

When the dancing and performing comes to an end, what do you think you will do next? I don’t think I will ever get out of the shows, I think I will take more of a role in production side of things. assisting with the choreography & staging. I have so much experience that I can teach the new “girls” as they join the company. What does a typical day look like with all the team? Rehearsals, sightseeing, shopping…has some great boutique shops.

Exhibition by world famous artist David Hockney in Belfast Marking his 80th year, this eagerly anticipated exhibition entitled David Hockney: I draw, I do focuses on the artist’s early work including the famous ‘Paper Pool’ series, alongside work from the current decade, all of which celebrates Hockney’s interest in drawing. Hockney is a painter, printmaker, photographer and designer and much like Andy Warhol at the MAC in 2013, this collection marks another first for Belfast. The MAC presents this Hockney exhibition in advance of the many celebrations that will happen next year. Hugh Mulholland, senior curator at the MAC, said: “We are delighted to be presenting the first significant exhibition of David Hockney’s work in Ireland to date. The exhibition focuses on Hockney’s formative years at Bradford Regional College of Art in the 1950s and will include rarely seen anatomical and observational drawings, early graphite portraits as well as significant later works which demonstrate Hockney’s continued interest in pushing the boundaries of his practice using new technologies. “We are very pleased to be able to show a series of his iPad portraits of 18

family and friends as well as some of his well-known works from The Arrival of Spring, 2011, which many visitors may recognise. At the core of all of this work is Hockney’s commitment to the critical importance of the act of drawing and how the early training at art school is drawn on throughout one’s creative life”. The MAC chose the title of the exhibition from an answer Hockney gave to a question asked of him by designer Paul Smith – “Do you still draw in the more traditional way, in the way you first did when you left the Royal College?” “Yeah, I draw, I do. ...From the age of 16 to the age of 20, all I did was really draw, because I was at the art school in Bradford and in Bradford you could be in the school from nine in the morning to nine at night... So I drew for four years. I don’t know what art schools are like now, but I’m told they don’t do drawing. That seems a bit mad to me that. Drawing is going to be needed in the future.” The exhibition opens on August 19 at the MAC and is free to visit. For more, visit themaclive.com

SIXTY REASONS TO CELEBRATE AT MCCALLS OF LISBURN One of Northern Ireland’s longestrunning fashion retailers has several reasons to celebrate this season. McCalls of Lisburn has not only been nominated for a prestigious national award, but it also happens to coincide with a very special anniversary of the landmark menswear store. Recognised widely as the industry’s most highly-respected accolade, the Drapers’ Awards celebrate the best in fashion retailing and this year their rollcall includes McCalls of Lisburn for the coveted Independent Menswear Retailer UK & Ireland category. This is the third time that the three-generation, familyrun business has been nominated for such an industry standard and the entire McCall family is hoping that this will be a case of “third time lucky” as 2016 has also marked their sixtieth anniversary of trading. Robert William McCall opened his gentleman’s outfitters on Lisburn’s Market Street way back in April 1956 and it became

an instant favourite with the fashionconscious men of County Down and beyond. When he retired, Robert’s two sons Mervyn and Percy McCall took over the running of the store. Three generations later, it is still very much a family concern, continuing to go from strength to strength in the capable hands of Mark, Chris, Jill and Alastair. And now, even a fourth generation is getting involved as Kirsty works part time on the online side of the business and some of Robert’s younger greatgrandchildren spend their school holidays working in the store. Although McCalls boasts an extensive collection of global menswear labels which can rival any multi-national chain, the fact that it is a family business with World Host status means that a warm welcome and a personal, friendly service is absolutely assured when customers drop in. more >>>

On trend designer labels include Gant, Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger and Ted Baker, plus an exciting addition for this season, Farah Vintage, which is a heritage brand with a modern look and feel.

To celebrate the store’s landmark sixtieth year, the team paired up with fashion photographer Khara Pringle and locally based models Cameron Kelly and Carlos Djalo to showcase a selection of looks for the new season.

A huge collection of contemporary suits is available to buy and also to hire for weddings and special occasions. Suiting brands include Magee, Carl Gross, Tommy Hilfiger and Remus Uomo, among others.

Of course, to see the McCalls’ collection in its entirety, customers can call into the destination store at Market Street Lisburn, while a huge selection is also available to view online at www. mccallsoflisburn.com

Martina Collins Dental and Skin Clinic This month Cathy Martin visits Martina Collins Dental and Skin Clinic to try out the ULTRACEL ultrasound facial – an £800 medi-cosmetic facial which has radical effects on skin tone and gives a powerful lift with just one treatment. This new and exclusive medi-facial uses a combination of high intensity focused ultrasound and fractional micro-needling radiofrequency. It is a revolutionary, zero-downtime facelifting technology, using the power of gentle yet powerful ultrasound, and fractionalized micro needling radiofrequency to lift not just the skin, but also the deep muscle layer (SMAS 44

SMAS - Superficial Muscular Aponeurotic System) underneath. This SMAS layer was previously only reached by surgical facelifts, and so Ultracel now boasts the most complete non-surgical face-lifting technology. As she twirled the mini baton on my skin, Martina explained that by using the safe, time-tested energy of ultrasound, the deep structural support layers of the skin are stimulated without disturbing the visible surface layers of the skin. The Radio frequency waves in Ultracel also stimulate the growth of new collagen over time, to gradually strengthen and tone skin from within starting from the top down and working layer by layer. Happy days! During the treatment, warm pulses of ultrasound energy are delivered deep under the skin, causing the muscle layer to contract. It’s not painful but you do feel a slight internal ‘tugging’ which I took as a sign that it was working.

WEB | MAG | LIFE

At the same time, the micro-needling fractional radio frequency boosts collagen in the dermis and creates transformational changes in the quality of the skin. The gentle heat with this also encourages the healthy, natural process of rejuvenation, stimulating your skin to produce its own fresh new collagen, making skin firmer, brighter, tighter and more elastic. In less than an hour I was able to go about my day as normal – and, thanks to a single Ultracel procedure, I had tighter, firmer and plumper skin without any downtime. We took before and after shots and I saw how the treatment had actually lifted and toned loose skin on my cheeks and neck. There was definitely a short-term “boost” to my skin in general but the natural process of creating new, more elastic collagen builds over time Martina tells me. (Can’t wait!) For me, the treatment is worth it to see the noticeable lift and difference in tone

UL

and elasticity. The longer term results will hopefully speak for themselves too, however, I would definitely advise that the Ultracel is not a “facelift.” It is an uplift, and while it is not a replacement for surgery, it is a viable option for those not ready for a facelift or those looking to prolong the effects of cosmetic surgery. The treatment is perfect for tightening and lifting the skin on the neck, under the chin, the jowls and jawline, the brow, around the eyes, and treating wrinkling and sagging on the décolletage and body. It can also diminish large pores and treat acne & acne scarring. To book, call Martina Collins Clinic on +44 (0)28 9066 6684 or visit www.martinacollins.com

“You can’t make old friends”

The Five Things Book by Paul McNally

Have you ever stopped to think about the amazing ‘things’ you surroundyourself with, and why? Gadgets, clothing, cars, art, people, places – in our daily lives we are constantly surrounded by amazing things. These things provoke memories, create deep feelings of nostalgia and we become attached to them. What if you had to choose only five things, as your favourite things. What would they be? And, why those particular things? Over the last year the Five Things project has been posing those exact questions to people from all over the world. Each person would supply a list of their five favourite things, along with the reason they chose that particular thing. The replies have been mesmerising; often poignant, emotive and at times, funny. These answers provide an insight into the lives of people from varying cultures, places and backgrounds This project began in year one of Paul McNally’s Masters degree and was solely web-

with all submissions placed on the Five Things website (thisisfivethings.com). The answers were so interesting, Paul felt it deserved to be showcased on a more traditional format also – in a design-led coffee-table book. That book, and also some products inspired by the book, were crowdfunded using the popular platform Kickstarter. The Five Things project has community and storytelling at its core, and for that reason, Kickstarter seemed like the perfect place to fund, and launch, the book. The book contains many notable industry leaders from the fields of graphic design, photography, art and music. Including Adrian Shaughnessy, Debbie Millman, Hamish Muir, Jessica Hishce, Dan Rubin, Kristian Nairn and loads more. The book raised nearly £10,000 on Kickstarter and has been shipped around the world, to over twenty countries. more >>>

is the campaign. It becomes a full time job until the target is hit.

UL caught up with Belfast designer Paul, to chat about the book and his plans for further projects. You must be delighted with the book and the successful Kickstarter. How did you find using Kickstarter? Kickstarter was an amazing experience. Probably one of the most demanding, and mentally draining, experiences of my life. It is relentless. From the moment you wake up, until you go to bed, all that’s on your mind 54

How long did it take you to hit the target, and how much did you raise? I had thirty days to raise £8500, amazingly I reached that figure in twenty days, with the final total ending up as £9500. The extra £1000 enabled me to make the book a hardback, and also meant I could produce extra copies to be sold after Kickstarter. Getting the Kickstarter across the line is definitely one of my proudest achievements as a designer. It meant I could self-publish my own book, which I then shipped to around twenty countries worldwide. Could you pick a ‘favourite thing’ from all the answers in the book? I think the one that sticks in my head the most was by a guy who lives in New York called Kevin. He simply chose his best friends as a favourite thing, and stated ‘you can’t make old friends’. I think that sums up the

whole project. Five Things is a simple idea that was meant to uncover interesting insights into people’s lives, and I think we can all relate to how important our friends are to us. That was my definitely my favourite ‘thing’. You have a vast array of different people in the book. Anyone that you’re really proud to have in there? As I designer I did target other designers that I liked, many of the people I respect from the field graphic design feature in the book. I also approached people from some of my favourite bands, Mark from Madness features, as does Jim-Bob from Carter USM. I think the person I’m most proud of having in the book is my seven year old son Lennon. He wrote out his five things for me and they feature in his handwriting on the very last page.

Are there still copies available? Yes, the pile is dwindling; however, the book is still for sale on my website (stylografik.com) and can also be purchased in Kaffe O (Ormeau Road shop). It was limited to 500 copies, once they are gone it won’t be reprinted. Any other projects on the horizon? Since I finished the MFA degree I have been working on rebranding, renaming and growing my design and branding business. I have just moved into a new studio on the Ormeau Road and we have added several new clients to our portfolio. The new studio is called Stylografik, and over the coming months I will be adding new team members, and undertaking some seriously exciting branding work. Check out Paul’s studio work, and his book, at www. stylografik.com

UL Magazine Chats to Gareth Macklin from the Macklin Group Gareth Macklin is director of the Macklin Group, a family business employing approximately 450 people in the hospitality and Nursing Home sectors. The group incorporates the award winning Malone Lodge Hotel along with Macklin Care Homes. Tell us about how you ended up where you are today? With a group that was started by my parents from when I was a child, business was always in my blood from a very early age. I came up through the hotel, working across all aspects of the business of the years. I spent some time working in both the United States and London before returning home in 2003 to open and run one of our newest nursing homes at that time in Ballycastle. Since then, I’ve progressed through the entire business, and worked on projects to strengthen, extend and expand the group to what it is today. This has seen me taking roles across all aspects of the 60

business including operations, business development, finance and ultimately director. Is there a typical day and if so what might that look like? Whilst many days vary as they progress, most usually start around 6.30 with my new son wanting to bounce on top of me, play and get some breakfast before taking him to crèche. I’m very fortunate to have an exceptional wife, family and team around me which allows me to split my day between meetings with them as required from each of our sites to deal with any necessary aspects. I’ll spend time reviewing our KPI’s and reports and well as meetings with a wide range of people who support the running of the business along with the other day to day issues as they arise. What do you enjoy most about running your own business? I love all aspects of the business but most importantly, it’s the ability to lead

WEB | MAG | LIFE

a team to deliver something that we can be truly proud of. It was also pointed out to me recently, the importance and impact the group has within the local community which also creates a great sense of pride. You sometimes forget that the work we do, impacts on almost 450 families each month who’re part of our team, along with the thousands of customers who we look after each year. What advice would you give to someone wanting to get into the hospitality or care sector? People often comment and question on how we ended up in 2 sectors which initially appear so different. However, the similarities between them are more obvious than they may initially appear, as the bottom line; they’re about looking after people and putting them first. Within our group, we call it “Care with Heart”. Therefore anyone looking to get into either sector has to have the ability to this, alongside a strong work ethic. You’re Chancellor of the Exchequer for the day. What would you change to help business in NI? Any additional efforts that could be made to stimulate and encourage job creation across NI would be welcomed. This may include initial tax incentives or short term national insurance reductions perhaps in the 1st year.

UL

What would you do if you won the lottery? It would depend on the amount we won but working on the basis it was a very big win – I’ve a long list of great friends and family members who would benefit off the back of it alongside our nominated charities of Tinylife, Alzheimer’s Society and Cancer Focus. Personally, I would love a dream holiday home, somewhere overlooking the water with a great barbeque! Favourite Restaurant? Being slightly biased, I’d have to say a steak from the Knife & Fork in Eglantine Avenue. Outside of this, MacNean House in Cavan Drink? Bacardi Oakheart & Coke Holiday Destination? Ravello in Italy 3 famous dinner party guests? Barack Obama, Simon Cowell, Kate Moss Describe yourself in 3 words. Loyal, Dedicated & Competitive

MX-5 out of 5 for Mazda’s Iconic 2 Seater

The Mazda MX-5 Sport Recaro is available to order from Lindsay Mazda Lisburn www.lindsaymazda.co.uk

Mazda has long set the standard when it comes to 2 seater affordable sports cars. The MX5 which has been around for what feels like ever recently had a complete facelift and from that spawned the range topping MX-5 Sport Recaro. This is in essence the 2.0 Sport model with a bit more equipment and a more aggressive look. You probably recognize the Recaro name from the famous seat manufacturer and this car comes with fantastic Alcantara trimmed sports seats with matching panel and dash. Your feet also get to play about with a fancy set of alloy racing style pedals and you get a top notch BOSE sound system too. Externally you get diamond cut 17 inch alloys which on a car this size makes a lot of sense. Standard metallic paint and a gloss black body-kit give the car a really cool stance. The car comes with stiffer Bilstein shocks and a front strut brace and limited slip-diff.

That all basically equals shed loads of fun. This car is a lot of fun to drive and handles as you’d expect the world’s bestselling 2 seater sports car to handle, despite the stiffer set up you still get enough roll and feedback to really get involved. You can really push the car around when you get the chance and it looks after you. You’d have to try hard to get yourself on to YouTube Fails with this little machine. Rear wheel drive cars are as we all know or better still have been told by the experts and to steal a catchphrase “the ultimate driving machines” The little MX-5 is probably the best pound for pound RWD car money can buy. Seriously, to have this much fun you’re looking at twice the price at least before you start ticking boxes. Inside the car and despite its small appearance you’ll have no issue finding

a decent driving position. The Recaro seats are an excellent piece of kit holding you in place and they also come heated as standard which is a must for Irish & UK Drivers. Overall we can’t find fault with the little Mazda. It’s hard to properly compare this car with anything else on the market as, well, the MX-5 has always been in a little segment of its own which is why it’s been so popular globally for so long. Should you by the top of the range Recaro? In a word -Yes! It’s £1000 more than the Sport Nav trim but you get enough toys and kit to make that a no brainer. You could also buy the base model 1.5 and enjoy it just as much but overall the extra power, styling and toys I just can’t see any reasonable reason not to go all the way here. Whatever you choose you’ll have an absolute blast.
