Velvet Crush A leading stylist in Northern Ireland, Eve has a wealth of experience in the industry. Each month she offers a fashion focus into the most coveted designers, trends and styles of the season. By now it won’t be a revelation to hear that velvet is big news this season. Undergoing a true renaissance, velvet is the key fabric to add to your wardrobe this winter. Although you may associate this plush fabric with ornate seventeenth-century baroque grandeur, historical festivals and costume, or power-pouf sleeves on retro dresses – it’s time to wipe the style slate clean with a fresh velvet perspective. The quintessentially eighties trend (you may just be old enough to remember its last resurgence) has made a definitive comeback, dominating Fashion Week catwalks from New York to Paris. Championed on the runways pretty much everywhere, designers hailed a return to opulence for the autumn/ winter season, as velvet took centre stage in the collections. This time around, a sumptuous palette of jewel tones paired with contemporary silhouettes offered a refreshing take on 28

the traditionally stuffy and somewhat dated material. Arriving in a dazzling array of hues, velvet stepped out of its dark, gothic box onto the catwalks and into high street stores. We saw headto-toe velvet at Vetements as tailoring added a masculine touch, while Erdem opted for a sophisticated take on elegant eveningwear. Valentino offered a lesson in layering velvet over polo neck knits, while we saw Preen go girlie with soft feminine pinks and slinky silhouettes. It wasn’t just the models that rocked the velvet revolution however, Fashion Week audiences took velvet under their wardrobe-savvy wing as street style aficionados mixed it up in an array of fluid layers, sporty styles and bold accessories. So if you’re anything like us, you’re now a captivated convert. Try velvet this winter; wear it coloured, crushed or head-to-toe… for the less brave opt for an accent or accessory. Suffice it to say, velvet no longer belongs underground.

Picking the Perfect Floor with David Scott Tiles When you visit a tile showroom you may be overwhelmed by the countless options available for your bathroom floor. Such terms as porcelain, ceramic and natural stone will be thrown around but what exactly are they? Here we explain these terms and how they wear on a bathroom floor.

CERAMIC TILE The main difference between ceramic and porcelain is that ceramic is fired at a lower temperature. This can make the product less durable and more prone to scratching and cracking if care is not taken. For this reason it is not recommended for floors in high traffic areas such as public spaces but is suitable in an average family bathroom where every day ‘wear and tear’ is not excessive. 38

PORCELAIN TILE If you’re after a product for your floor that is outstanding in durability and quality and will last a lifetime, porcelain is your ‘go to’ tile. Porcelain tiles have been fired up to extreme temperatures making them extremely strong, impervious to moisture and resistant to extreme heat or cold. You will never have to seal a glazed porcelain tile and it can be cleaned with most household products. One of the most exciting features about porcelain tile of recent years is how far digital inkjet technology has advanced allowing porcelain to perfectly simulate natural products such as timber, marble, terrazzo, concrete and slate with ease. The resemblance is as impressive as it is authentic and in most cases, you’d be hard pressed telling the difference between the manmade product and the real thing.

WEB | MAG | LIFE

NATURAL STONE TILE There’s something very special about the characteristic patterns and tonal variation of natural stone. Marble, terrazzo, concrete and slate tiles exude an opulent look and feel that is hard to beat. But before you fall in love with this product there are some important maintenance facts you should know. All natural stone is porous meaning it has microscopic holes on its surface. When installing natural stone on floors and especially in ‘wet’ areas, these pores need to be treated with a stone sealer to help prevent staining, etching and wearing. The sealing process is not a one off thing, instead it is a job that needs to be done regularly depending on how much traffic the stone has received. The effort of sealing may well be worth the joy and beauty you receive from these impressive tiles on an everyday basis, however some people may find man made tiles to be a more practical long term solution.

UL

HANDMADE TILE Handmade tiles offer a style that is quite different to any other tile available. Imperfect edges, glaze variation, interesting patterns and colours that contrast from tile to tile are handmade trademarks that highlight their uniqueness and ultimate sense of beauty. This simply cannot be achieved with a man made product. Like natural stone, if your handmade product does not have a glaze on its surface it will need to be sealed for your bathroom floor. As you can see the benefits of a porcelain tile outweigh most other tile products and is a popular choice for floors but with so many other beautiful options available, the decision will ultimately come down to choosing a product that perfectly suits your sense of style, design and personality. Caring for Teenage Skin: By Caroline Purdy at Beauty Culture This month I wanted to focus on treating teenage skin. The skin at this age is prone to many hormonal changes as well as being sensitive. Teenage acne usually begins with oiliness in the T-zone and small superficial comedones (blackheads) with outbreaks commonly occurring in the centre of the face (cheeks and forehead), as well as on the back and chest. Environmental changes mean that a lot of teens are going through puberty earlier so they are experiencing skin problems sooner. Though it is believed to be mainly genetic, another factor is the immaturity of the skin itself. In skin that is still maturing, keeping up pace with the rapid, puberty-induced production of sebum is difficult. In other words, the skin literally cannot keep up with itself. Excessive production of sebum, combined with excessive shedding of skin cells, results in plugged follicles which become an ideal feeding and breeding ground for the bacterium that causes most acne. And the teenage lifestyle often makes matters worse! Processed foods that are high in GI (sugar) along with poor cleansing techniques also contribute to the incidence of acne in teenagers. While there are plenty of skin care 50

product choices available, they often contain harsh and inexpensive ingredients, artificial fragrances and colours – all things that can irritate and strip oil from skin, so it is important to treat the skin gently and not to over use medicated products, only in the way they have been prescribed. As skincare therapists we have the opportunity to ease the physical discomfort and the emotional trauma of dealing with teenage skin. I would recommend to have a skin consultation with a beauty therapist from a young age to start with a good routine and know the basic dos and don’ts, hence establishing good skin care habits that will last a lifetime. Treating breakouts… Although it is very tempting to squeeze spots (or pustules) it’s important not too as all this will do is cause inflammation, possible scarring and further more breakouts in the area. Post inflammatory hyper pigmentation (red or brown marks) can appear once the breakout is away, though they can be treated at a later stage, it’s easier and less damaging to prevent them by treating and calming the breakout rather than squeezing. Exfoliating regularly with a specific product to encourage the removal of

WEB | MAG | LIFE

damaged cells were needed will prevent a build up of skin cells. Understandably, teenagers can become obsessive about their acne and may try to scrub it away. While rough handling makes matters worse, consistent exfoliation is important. Using gentle exfoliation techniques with effective products with virtually no pressure will begin to loosen cell-debris the moment they come into contact with the skin. Always remember if taking certain medications or using topical creams from the doctor they could prevent you from having a waxing treatment so always check and tell your beauty therapist if on any. Mineral make up is a must! Working with and using mineral make up since my teens I know the benefit of using natural minerals as they do not clog your pores and also contain a physical spf to reflect harmful rays and prevent sun damage from an early age. A lot of people think mineral make up will not give you good enough coverage though this is defiantly not the case as there are now liquid formulations and ones especially designed to treat breakouts and prevent them so perfect for teenage skin. Washing make up brushes regularly and

UL

not reusing face cloths, only a fresh one each time or using a Dermalogica sponge cloth will also help. Professional treatments available at Beauty Culture would be Guinot’s Hydra Clean, an express facial treatment using thermal heat technology which includes extraction of any congestion and Dermalogica extraction facial and back treatment, along with a full prescription with the Clear Start™ products. This is the first serious skin care system aimed at helping teens. Developed by the experts at Dermalogica, it uses powerful ingredients and soothing botanicals to deliver real results. It’s specifically formulated to unclog pores, minimize breakout-causing bacteria and control oil – all key factors for controlling teen breakouts, which are usually triggered by puberty. And it does so without aggravating already troubled skin – something other teen products don’t do. Clear Start™ takes a four-level approach to clearing breakouts through combination therapy, combining the best of nature’s botanicals and the science of breakout-clearing skin care.

UL Magazine in association with mynijob.com chats to Aideen Duggan, from Keenan Healthcare Aideen Duggan is Managing Director of Keenan Healthcare who place both temporary and permanent staff with charities, private clinics, the NHS and other funded organisations. Tell us about how you ended up where you are today? I worked for 2 other Health and Social Care Agencies in Belfast as a recognised Market Leader before I branched out on my own and formed Keenan Healthcare Ltd. We went live in January 2013. It really is all that I know, I enjoy it and I am good at it. I have always found it easy to build strong relationships quickly and am very respectful of the jobs that our temps carry out on a daily basis. Most are frontline working and that takes great dedication. Some Agencies can get caught up with setting KPIs that can be time consuming and non-beneficial; just to meet branch targets. Our model at Keenan Healthcare is set up very 60

differently and works really well. The KPIs that are set in-house are fluid and can move depending on what business we have on. We do have a clear career progression structure in place so that we can empower our Consultants to climb their own ladder within the company without being micromanaged. Is there a typical day and if so what might that look like? We adopt Brian Tracy’s practice of ‘Eating that green frog’ at Keenan Healthcare and get the main tasks completed early on each day. The rest of the day is filled with advertising for jobs, registering temps for work, carrying out their compliance checks, filling shifts and processing timesheets etc. No 2 days are the same which is great! What do you enjoy most about running your own business? I get to do everything properly! Compliance is paramount within Health & Social Care recruitment. By ensuring

that everyone is fully compliant before going out to work, it gives us peace of mind that we are not only fulfilling our contractual agreements but we are also keeping our temps safe when out working. I do work very long hours at times, as do our Consultants but the feedback from Clients and temps really does make it all worthwhile. We have a strong team in place at Keenan Healthcare and we share the same values. I consider myself very lucky to have such a fresh, reputable company in play and am proud to be a Top Tier supplier of NHS staff throughout Northern Ireland. We gained these 3 main contracts within 1 year of trading which was a fantastic win for us. What advice would you give to someone wanting to get into the Recruitment industry? Recruitment is a rewarding industry to work in. There is a transparency now with Clients which is refreshing. Always have an honest relationship with your Clients and your temporary staff. Reputation is everything in Recruitment, no matter what sector you are in. You need to have strong business development skills. Pick up the phone for a chat with your Clients about their needs and to see how existing staff are getting on in their posts. Keep your name at the forefront of their minds. After 14 years I still get a buzz from confirming a placement. When you no longer get that buzz, it is time to leave Recruitment and find another job. We provide people’s ‘bread and butter’

UL

and can make a massive impact on their lives and careers. We often help professionals source their first ever qualified job which is very rewarding. Without the work of our temps we would be nothing. Always remember that. You’re Chancellor of the Exchequer for the day. What would you change to help business in NI? I would facilitate more schemes and courses for people to set up their own business in Northern Ireland, providing funding for staff and equipment within their first year trading. What would you do if you won the lottery? Build our forever family home and give a large donation to Horizon House, the NI kiddies hospice, which is a charity very close to my heart. Favourite Restaurant? The Muddlers Club, Belfast. Drink? Rioja. Holiday Destination? Italy. 3 famous dinner party guests? Lord Sugar, Beyoncé, William Butler Yeats. Describe yourself in 3 words. Dedicated, hard-working, fun! W www.keenanhealthcare.co.uk E aideen.duggan@keenanhealthcare.co.uk T 028 90 517 205

SUVs are hot property with nearly all the major manufacturers offering some sort of raised-up hatchback in their range to grab market share in what’s become a very lucrative segment. Volkswagen jumped on the bandwagon back in 2008 with the launch of the Tiguan compact SUV. It sold well for the brand as the demand for SUVs took off. But competition is fierce in this segment, so an all-new Tiguan was well overdue. Enter the second generation Tiguan. Launched earlier in 2016, it’s the first Volkswagen SUV to be built on the MQB platform, which is shared with the Golf Mk 7 and a number of others in the Volkswagen range. The soft curves of the previous model are gone and the new Tiguan is now wearing a sharp suit. It’s all the better for it. The styling is classic VW but with an assertive and

classic VW but with an assertive and robust presence that is just right for this market. Inside, the cabin design is similar to the Golf and recently launched Touran MPV. All the controls are easy to find and use, and the quality of the materials nods to the more premium end of the SUV market. Technology highlights include the ‘Active Info Display’ digital instrument cluster and the touchscreen infotainment system, which is one of the best in the business. The Tiguan has seating for five and the passenger footwells in the back are reasonably large, while headroom is also good. There’s a sliding rear bench and when it’s slid forward there’s an impressive 615 litres of available boot space, while the rear seat backrest split folds 40:20:40.

The Tiguan range kicks off with a 1.4-litre TSI turbo petrol engine with 125hp but there are more powerful petrols available. 2.0-litre diesels are offered with a range of outputs from 115hp to 240hp. There are manual and automatic transmissions available, as well as a four wheel drive option. The 2.0-litre 115hp diesel is the most economical, returning up to 60mpg with CO2 emissions of 123g/km. On the road the Tiguan is pleasingly agile for a SUV with well-weighted steering and not too much lean in the corners. It’s comfortable for long haul journeys and the 2.0-litre TDI 150hp tested offers great power and flexibility, while noise intrusion into the cabin is minimal.

air conditioning, automatic lights and wipers, 8” touchscreen and digital radio. Pricing starts at £22,510 for petrols and £24,110 for diesels. The Tiguan can look pricey compared to rivals like the Nissan Qashqai and Kia Sportage, but the Tiguan has an all-round polish and premium feel that just lifts it above the competition.
