The Backless Shoe The backless shoe As much as the passing of New Year means we are technically in the ‘new season’ and we love pouring over the latest looks strutting down catwalks well ahead of schedule, it can be ever so frustrating waiting those long transitional months before we can actually buy and wear. Instead of waiting for the shops to fill up with gloriously fresh trends and the weather to actually change, why not indulge in a few key pieces that will see you floating into the new season trendready? What’s more, you can purchase them now! We’re all sick of the sight of sale dregs, fed up with our go-to knitwear and ready to pack away the practical winter coats, so let’s perk up our winter wardrobes and integrate them with a few little pops of SS’16 style to get a head start on the season. Don’t panic, we’re not talking bare legs and crop tops just yet, spring is still a distant ray of light away: these key pieces are good to go and are super-accessible

in stores now. Even better, you may already own some of 2016’s revival pieces, so dust off the cobwebs…

Cold Shoulder Tops Whether it’s just a sneak peak or full cold shoulder, here’s a trend that will last through the cold spell into the summer sun. Sexy shoulders are the flesh to flash right now.

The Babouche, the slipper, the flat mule… whatever you wish to call them, the backless shoe is the style of the season. Seen at countless shows, from Jil Sander to Victoria Beckham and Céline, this flawless footwear is your superversatile throw-and-go shoe.

The New Shirt Like us, are you bored of the button-up? Fortunately spring sees the classic white shirt revamped. Fresh details update this smart separate – asymmetric hemlines, balloon sleeves and oversized bows,

FASHION to name a few. Our favourite is the high ruffle neck, Victorian-inspired blouse, spotted on the catwalks of Alexander McQueen and Zimmermann. Until the temperatures heat up, layer yours under a cashmere knit.

Chokers Chokers

They’ve been around for a while and are not showing any signs of hibernating for the next season. We will continue to adorn them in every carnation: oversized metallic, beaded, velvet and intricate charm chokers. The latest IT-style is the lariat choker: double chain and pendant.

Oversized Cardigans

Christopher Kane SS’16

So, picture the chunkiest, oversized, granny cardi you own and dust it off, as cosy casuals enjoy a spring-style makeover. Think feminine, thrown-together styling – layer your knit over a silky slip dress, satin cami or floaty midi skirt. For inspiration check out Christopher Kane ’s take on restyling this staple.

HAPPINESS IS... CLOTHING..!!

BEAUTY

Luscious Lips

WITH LUSCIOUS LIPS NOW AN EVER INCREASING TREND WITH FEMALES, MADE FASHIONABLE BY CELEBRITIES SUCH AS KYLIE JENNER. WE LOOK AT WAYS YOU CAN ACHIEVE THIS LOOK. 1. Cinderella lips A new cosmetic trend with women is called ‘Cinderella lips - The quick and painless procedure uses saline solution to temporarily plump the lips for up to 12 hours A topical numbing cream is applied to the area for 15 minutes before the saline is injected into the lips, instantly 22

w w w. m y u l s t e r l i f e . c o m

plumping them and increasing the volume.Unlike fillers, the results wear off after 12 hours and are absorbed into the body with no risks of side effects or infection.

2 Injectable lip filler Lip augmentation is a cosmetic procedure that can give you fuller, plumper lips. These

days, injectable dermal filler is the most commonly used method of lip augmentation. There are many types of dermal fillers that can be injected in your lips and around your mouth. But the most common fillers today are products that contain substances similar to hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in the body. It helps increase volume in your lips. These types of dermal fillers are sometimes called "hyaluronic acid fillers."

3 Lipstick How the lipstick is applied can give the illusion of plumper fuller lips and the use of a lipliner pencil can give this effect. Also on the market, are some forms of lip plumper. Women with thin lips should avoid darker colours and also use a lip gloss to give a greater illusion of fullness.

BEAUTY

Spa Sleuth NEW YEAR, NEW ME... WELL, ACTUALLY, JUST OLDER ME, BUT MAYBE A SLIGHTLY LESS BEDRAGGLED ME THAN PREVIOUS JANUARYS.

F

or 2016 I decided to start the year working on the premise that beauty comes from within and it is more than just skin deep. And now that we're in February I can see some great results, with not a potion in sight!

24

w w w. m y u l s t e r l i f e . c o m

The first item on my to-do list for 2016 was the FitFodder.com #30DAYCHALLENGE which entails dropping consumption of all alcohol, caffeine and refined sugar as well as maintaining a dedication to fitness through at least 3 FitFodder

By Cathy Martin

PT sessions per week in 30 days. The rationale behind the timespan is that just over 4 weeks will allow the body to forget old habits and establish healthier new ones. I was told - and now I know for myself - that this is not a quick fix and nor is it a crash diet. It is a healthy life

BEAUTY choice which is sustainable and realistic in terms of a long-term lifestyle goal. But back to the plan - not only does the FitFodder team send you healthy, fresh and ready-to-cook produce which is high in protein (and lean in terms of fat) directly to your door, the team can also allocate their official nutritionist Gillian Killner to assess your food intake before the programme starts and chat to you about where you might face pitfalls, challenges and so much more. And before that again, the medical experts at 352 Healthcare can also take bloods (for glucose, cholesterol and kidney statistics) plus other details like at a pre-programme assessment just to be 100% certain. Over the 30 days I realised that I was essentially addicted to sugar - it was so hard to give up and on days 2-3-4 and 5 I was falling asleep everywhere, I had no idea how much false energy sugar had been providing me. Caffeine was easy because I rarely drink tea or coffee and don’t drink fizzy drinks at all, I upped my water intake to 2.5/3L per day and increased my boiled w w w. m y u l s t e r l i f e . c o m

BEAUTY

water + fresh lemon slices to about 3 cups per day. Alcohol was easy enough although I did break on Day 21 with a few glasses of cava which in turn led to a takeaway the next day. I was well and truly off the wagon for 24 hours! On the whole though, my skin, hair, nails and digestion all improved. I lost a little bit of weight (but that wasn’t my goal) and despite a few dodgy moods at the beginning 26

w w w. m y u l s t e r l i f e . c o m

(think 'hangry' 24/7) I felt so much better overall. I learnt that improving your lifestyle and diet can work wonders for skin and beauty - and it just takes a little bit of effort to focus on the long term goal over the short term craving to get you through. A result for me! After working beauty from the inside out, I decided to work top-tobottom next; so I headed to The Dressing Room in

Holywood for a Nioxin scalp renew dermabrasion treatment. We diligently exfoliate our faces and bodies, but what about the skin on our heads? As most of don't see it on a regular basis thanks to long locks, we never even think about how we treat our scalps – but being the gateway to healthy hair, exfoliating it helps promote hair growth. As a self-confessed dry shampoo addict (who isn't nowadays?), I'd been

BEAUTY

overloading my scalp with products, causing congestion so in a bid to 'reset' my scalp I booked in with The Dressing Room for what was basically it's an anti-ageing facial for the scalp to accelerate the removal of stubborn scalp debris and build up around the follicle sites such as dead skin cells and oil. The first step was a quick assessment of the hair and scalp to choose the system best suited to the

hair type (in my case it was system 5, normal-to-thin looking chemically treated hair). Next up the team used the Nioscope (which is a specialised magnifier to study the scalp, it can show clients before and after images of their scalp via an iPad just in front of them - and super close up scalp shots can be a wee bit scary it has to be said!). But the results are visual, obvious and immediate. Then, the science bit - the

scalp renew dermabrasion treatment was applied all over my scalp on dry hair, massaged for 1 minute and left to process for 10 minutes while I relaxed. It felt minty cold but comfortable and cool. This was followed by the Nioxin 3 part system cleanser, revitaliser and scalp treatment (all massaged in diligently!) and, to finish, a teeny drop of the rejuvenating elixir and a blow dry as normal. My scalp was reassessed with the nioscope and I noticed visible improvements with much healthier looking hair. Firstly my hair looked swishy and shiny and felt insanely soft, with a weightlessness that lasted weeks. My roots felt lighter than ever, all my congestion appeared to have cleared and I was washing my hair (and dry-shampooing it) less frequently – bonus! I've arming myself with the at-home Scalp Renew Dermabrasion Treatment to keep the build-up minimal and the skin cells turning over. The whole process took approximately an hour and a half and costs £45, which is not a bad investment for great, healthy hair. w w w. m y u l s t e r l i f e . c o m

After

Brazilian Blowout

I

recently visited DKY’s gorgeous new premises on the Belfast Road in Bangor for a Brazilian Blowout with Christine and I could not recommend it enough. I stepped through the door of the modern, bright salon on a wet afternoon with huge crazy hair and left two hours later with glossy, smooth and healthy hair plus the promise that it wasn’t going to look like it did on arrival for the next few months. Amazing!

Before

My hair isn’t straight and it isn’t curly, it’s just big. Every day after washing, drying and straightening it, as soon as I leave the house it’s huge again! Following my Brazilian Blowout I wash it less often, I can blow dry it in half the time, brush it and my hair is smooth, straight and shiny. It saves me 25 minutes in the morning which is precious time when chasing two little girls to get ready for school before I head to work!

This alone would make the treatment worthwhile but the best bit is that my hair now stays straight and smooth all day long. The process was so simple and really relaxing as I don’t often get to take time out to relax in a salon. Christine washed my hair until squeaky clean to get rid of any product build up. The product was then applied, my hair was blast dried and straightened to lock the treatment in and at this stage I could already see how amazing it was going to be. It was then re-washed, blast dried and without the use of any straighteners the results were fabulous! I’d never dream of leaving the house without straightening my hair and for at least the next twelve weeks I don’t need them at all which will definitely improve the health of my hair. For anyone with frizzy, curly ‘Monica’ hair like mine you have to do this! Rachel (now a Brazilian blowout addict)

BEAUTY

Love your skin

W

ith Valentine’s Day approaching it is the ideal time to give some much needed TLC to our skin. The extreme weather changes, central heating, car heaters and the winter environment generally causes our skin to become more sensitive, dry or dehydrated. When the skin is dehydrated it is dull, lacking moisture, can have dry patches and fine lines are more visible. Increasing your water intake will help the skin in general. The skin is the largest organ in our body 50

though it is the last to receive any water. That is why it is very important to treat the top layers of the skin with a correct daily skincare regime. Dry skins are lacking oil, have dry flaky areas and lines are more visible. Gentle cleansing, changing your moisturiser, adding a night time serum into your routine and making sure you are exfoliating twice a week will help the effects of the winter on our skin. For sensitive skins or skins that have become sensitised it is vital to protect the skins barrier function. This will prevent

damage and protect the already stimulated capillaries. Using a physical SPF rather than a chemical SPF will help this but also by avoiding harsh products and investing in a good moisturiser. In the salon on a professional level we use electrical facial treatments and look at the current products you are using to see if there are any changes are needed. The Guinot Hydradermie2 facial is an excellent choice and is one of our most popular treatments. It is a full facial treatment using galvanic and high frequency currents. This facial also includes a pressure point lymph drainage massage and a treatment mask. It rehydrates and penetrates deeper into our skin layers than manual application can to treat fine lines and wrinkles. Preventing premature aging of the skin means less deep lines in the future. A regular facial treatment every 4-8 weeks is recommended or start off with a course of four, one a week for four weeks.

New Year, New You..?

THE DEFINITION OF ‘INSANITY’: “DOING THE SAME THING OVER AND OVER AGAIN AND EXPECTING DIFFERENT RESULTS” - ALBERT EINSTEIN

S

By Eve Brannon

o here we are again: another season behind us, full of family gatherings, holiday parties and festive feasts. With January comes the predictable promise of a fresh start. However, behind the seductive lure of “New Year, New You” lies a common, yet obvious pattern. Starting the New Year with the same intentions that the ‘old you’ has proclaimed every year for the last… how many years? Obediently signing up to a fancy bells and whistles gym membership every January may be the best choice you will make this year, but if (like many of us) it hasn’t quite worked out for you in the long term as yet, perhaps it’s time for a fresh approach. More than two thirds of us will have started 2016 with the greatest of intentions and 52

joined a gym. Whilst this is a positive step and a great idea in theory, despite our best intentions new research has shown that by February, over a third of us will have quietly called up and cancelled our sparkly new gym membership before we’ve even worked up a sweat. Or, in a potentially more depressing outcome: we don’t cancel the payments and will continue to pay out to sit on the sofa of an evening. With the average person only getting around to cancelling this membership after 18 months, as a nation we’re wasting £37 million a year on unused gym memberships.

So why is this the case? Research shows an astonishing three quarters of us feel we need motivating in order to exercise at all and shockingly, a massive four in five Brits who do make it as far as the gym floor will consider giving up after a mere 20 minutes of ‘self-supervised’ exercise. Without being too harsh, various factors can take a little of the blame: dark,

WEDDINGS Rosalyn and Ryan Byrne recently married in Dungiven Chapel. The Wedding reception was at their private home in Drumsurn, just outside Dungiven. The Couple say they wanted to utilise the gorgeous grounds and keep everything homely and comfortable for invited guests so they had a lavish marquee reception just behind their home. Her Dress was 'Galia Lahav' and shoes by Jimmy Choo. Rosalyn loved the simplicity and elegance of the dress and of course the fact that it had an edge with the embroidered back and train. The Couples honeymoon began in Vegas where they stayed a few nights before hiring a car and traveling across the US via Death Valley, up to Yosemite National Park, across to San Francisco, down to Santa Barbara, then into LA where they stayed in Beverly Hills for a few nights, The couple also had a lot of small town stops en route. THIS WEEK DR DAVID MURNAGHAN LOOKS AT FACIAL AESTHETICS SUCH AS BOTOX AND DERMAL FILLERS.

f you’re feeling dismayed at the unwelcome effects that another year, and another season of excess, have taken on your looks, you might have begun wondering if there’s anything you can do about it. With that in mind, this month we ask 2016 Irish Dentistry Rising Star* Dr David Murnaghan about facial aesthetics such as Botox and dermal fillers, with an eye on reports of risky practice across the UK.

Are facial aesthetics worth the risk? It really depends on where you go to get them. There’s no reason whatsoever why patients should be putting themselves at risk because non-surgical treatments like Botox and dermal fillers are inherently safe procedures and there are clear guidelines for their use. For example, in the UK, Botox can only be prescribed by a qualified medical professional after a 62

w w w. m y u l s t e r l i f e . c o m

consultation with the patient – you can’t just walk into a clinic and get injected no questions asked, at least you’re not supposed to be able to. The problem is unqualified people are attracting patients with cut price treatments, ignoring the guidelines and causing life changing damage, as reported in The Times just before Christmas (http://www. thetimes.co.uk/tto/health/ news/article4645278.ece).

How do facial aesthetics work? Botox blocks signals from the nerves to the muscles. It’s most often used on forehead lines, the lines around the eyes known as crow’s feet, and frown lines. Dermal fillers are made from hyaluronic

acid, a natural substance that attracts water to the skin and plumps it up. Hyaluronic acid depletes with age, so dermal fillers are simply a top up on the areas of your face most affected; usually fine lines around the nose, mouth, lips, cheeks and forehead. Both treatments are temporary and last around three months but longer with top-ups.

Who can I trust with my face? Dental practices are your safest bet. It makes sense when you think about it because dentists study the anatomy of the face for their entire careers and are probably more experienced than anyone at facial injections. On top of that many dental practices employ a medical doctor for facial aesthetics so the patient benefits from the combined experience of two disciplines. For example at Boyne Dental & Implant Clinic we have Dr Orlaith O’Daly, who is a GP, and myself doing the facial aesthetics work. You’ll find that responsible practitioners

EXPERT always seek subtle results and use their products sparingly with extreme care, never ever going for the ‘frozen face’ look. Another advantage of choosing a dental practice is they are run according to hospital grade clinical standards, which may not always be the case for high street beauticians. And when you’re in a building with experts in different types of cosmetic dentistry like at Boyne Dental & Implant Clinic, you’ll be advised if there are other ways you can complement your makeover at the same time.

When are Botox and fillers appropriate? Anyone over 18 can get facial aesthetics, but they are most popular with older patients because of their ability to smooth away the signs of ageing. Anti-wrinkle injections such as Botox reduce lines caused by movements in the face, which deepen with age. Fillers add volume and dampen static lines, and are especially effective on the lips.

Q&A

Beauty Culture

E

stablished in 2000 Beauty Culture has been a successful salon for over fourteen years. Awarded the prestigious Irish beauty salon of the year in 2003. In May 2014 the long term manager of Beauty Culture (Caroline Purdy) took over the business as the new

owner and proprietor of the new premises on Bloomfield Road

Tell us about how you ended up where you are today? After completing my GCSEs at Newtownbreda high school I started working in the NPO Connswater store. I worked part time

“Expect to study hard as it’s an ever changing and expanding business, you will need to be prepared because this never stops.” 64

while studying and having a placement for my NVQ level two. When I was moving onto my NVQ level three I started working for the Lisa in the original Beauty Culture. While continuing to further my education in the salon brands at 19 I became head therapist, shortly after we won Beauty Salon of the year for Ireland then I became salon manager at 21 when the business expanded. In May 2014 Lisa was moving away to live and the business in Ballyhackamore was closing and I had the great opportunity to open a brand new Beauty Culture on Bloomfield Road, with all the senior staff working with me. Since then all our senior staff have become Dermalogica ‘skin experts’ and we continue to bring in the latest treatments.

Is there a typical day and if so what might that look like? My day starts with answering emails, writing to-do lists and checking stock levels. Treating clients with a variety of different treatments we offer throughout the rest of the day.

Q&A

What do you enjoy most about running your own business? I am a very passionate about running all aspects of the business. If I need to be flexible with my working hours I can be. Whether to suit my clients or my childcare arrangements.

Have you any advice for someone wanting to get into the Beauty industry? Expect to study hard as it’s an ever changing and expanding business, you will need to be prepared because this never stops. Getting a good placement or first job does help. It’s very important to have a interest in several aspects of beauty when starting out.

You’re Chancellor of the Exchequer for the day. What would you change to help business in NI? A lot of businesses in the service industry struggle to pay the quarterly vat bill. As a result some small businesses avoid expanding, stocking more products and employing more staff. I would higher the threshold before

you have to start to pay vat or reduce the 20% vat rate for smaller to medium businesses.

What would you do if you won the lottery? Give a lot to friends and family to pay off their mortgages and to mental health and cancer research charities. I would invest and expand the Beauty Culture brand.

One Word!

Favourite Restaurant? Marco Pierre White steakhouse bar and grill Belfast Drink? Prosecco Holiday Destination? Portugal 3 famous dinner party guests? Michelle Obama, Marco Pierre White and Malala Yousafzai. Describe yourself in 3 words. Emotional, passionate, creative.
