eing born in 1984, alas, I only had the opportunity to embrace the kiddie fashion of the eighties… but my appreciation for the decade and all its retro glory runs deep. Big hair, big bangles and big shoulders – what’s not to love? It was a time in style that embraced larger than life, fun fashion and the good news is, it’s back for autumn winter 2015. And there’s a remix of eighties pop culture and fashion references popping up all over the catwalks to prove it. With the 70s having yet another flower power hay day this season, it’s time for the 80s to take a slice of the nostalgic limelight – but fear not, this season’s take on the trend sees you more Dior than Dallas (no perm required). If eighties fashion usually makes you shift uncomfortably in your style seat, prepare for an attitude adjustment, as designers lead the march of a brave new rival. At

nod to power dressing with serious shoulders and dizzying rainbow knits. Time to work your inner Alexis Colby aka Joan Collins’ Dynasty super-bitch persona! For a soft, ethereal take on the decade look to designer Alberta Ferretti. Envisage 80’s (slightly

bonkers) Kate Bush, as white floaty dresses in dreamy ruffles drifted down the runway. Meanwhile, Missoni came up trumps in true clashing colour combos teamed with oversized blazers and glittering tights. Thinking print? Polka dots of course! Bottega Veneta worked the sartorial spot into their collection, spreading influence from Bananarama, a band that defined the decade. Lastly, Saint Laurent went to the darker side of the decade, personifying the ultimate 80s bad girl vamp. Seductive leather, boxy dresses and sheer, torn stockings. If you don’t fancy going the whole hog, try out a few 1980s inspired accessories in a contemporary take on some old classics. Think Saturday Night Fever: circular belt buckles, souchy boots, sheer black tights or update your favourite jacket with the addition of a

FASHION shoulder pad. Whether you opt for Wham-tastic or Cindy Crawford chic, roll with it, it’s not just acceptable in the eighties!

The Cinch corsets have a wonderful shape and feel, you can tell the quality of the craftsmanship that went into the products. Are you a risk taker when it comes to your look or do you trust in the classics? I do love and trust in the classics. I didn’t used to be a risk taker but as I get older I am so much happier to give new styles ago. I love wearing a bit of colour now.

What’s the best outfit you’ve ever worn? I loved my outfit last year at Glamour Woman of the Year Awards when I won an award. It was a gorgeous yellow and white skirt (I think it was Roksanda w w w. m y u l s t e r l i f e . c o m

When it comes to your wardrobe – are you a chaotic dresser or super organised? Chaotic - I am the cliché image of head in wardrobe flinging things over my head! This is why my Warehouse collection is so great – it’s simple and easy to mix and match.

iss Maison would have approved. Named after the genteel but quirky lady who owned the early-19th century Rostrevor townhouse, Maisons Restaurant is the idyllic venue for a spot of afternoon tea, the latest gastronomic

delight to adorn its well-priced menus. Don’t expect chintz and lace though. Behind the traditional town house façade, Maisons is a thoroughly modern restaurant with inviting, clean cut décor that lets the food take centre stage.

w w w. m y u l s t e r l i f e . c o m

Walk through the doors and you’ll instantly feel a welcoming, easy ambience that tells you Maisons was a once a much-loved family home. You’ll also find respectful little echoes of its history; Miss Maisons favourite French lavender still grows in the pretty

EAT&DRINK window boxes outside. These personal touches give a tantalising glimpse of the attention to detail that awaits within. Nestled in the charming coastal village of Rostrevor, County Down’s newest destination restaurant is already a must-visit for foodies, from home and beyond, seeking that heady thrill of quality dining coupled with value for money. Launched in June this year, its pedigree is unquestionable. Raymond McArdle, one of the great heroes of the Irish restaurant scene, is the passionate driving force behind Maisons. He’s delighted to be back in his home town and lives

just around the corner from his new grill and bar style restaurant. You can expect nothing less than a memorable dining experience from a chef whose dishes seduced the exacting Prue Leith on BBC’s Great British Menu. Don’t be surprised if you see a famous face or two among the clientele. From lunch through to dinner and, of course,

afternoon tea, the thoughtfully crafted menus practically sing the delights of fresh, top-notch, local produce. Tender Mourne Blackface Lamb, Thornhill Duck, Armagh Pork, Adam Kelly’s artisan goats cheese. Not forgetting that Maisons is just a stone’s throw away from NI’s largest fishing fleet. Locally-landed seafood is a glorious speciality, from Kilkeel White Crab and Carlingford Lough Oysters to juicy Portavogie Prawns. And the presentation you’ll be hard pushed not to break etiquette and take a sneaky Instagram or three. The bar also has a cocktail list – try Maisons unique signature cocktail ‘Pure Dom’ - and a pleasing w w w. m y u l s t e r l i f e . c o m

selection of well-priced wines and craft beers. Let’s get back to Afternoon Tea. Exquisitely presented on a bespoke, grey slate tea stand, you’ll enjoy a mouth-watering array of traditional and modern delights, including delicate hand-crafted sandwiches, freshly baked scones and moist cakes, straight from the oven – the chocolate and pistachio brownie is a triumph.

Raymond’s famously more-ish Petits Fours are also served and there’s a refreshing selection of quality teas and coffees. If you fancy a little afternoon tipple, pure Italian Prosecco, Rosé or Brut, from the acclaimed Great Vine Imports is the perfect complement to your afternoon tea experience. But no paper doilies. What would Miss Maison say about that?

Slane, Co Meath, an hour’s drive from Belfast. Our journey there saw the motorway give way to meandering country roads leading to the idyllic location surrounded by 80 acres of land. The 18th Century House here is one part of the estate, together with beautifully appointed cottages, a rustic ‘cellar bar’ and award winning restaurant ‘Brabazon’. The charm and elegance of the estate transports you into a scene from Downton Abbey and you can’t help but feel like Lord and Lady of the Manor. On arrival, we were treated to a beautiful lunch experience in the Cellar Bar. This charming building encapsulated the raw charm of original stone brickwork with the warmth of new contemporary

10 Workout Wonders

By Eve Brannon and sponsored by Peak Physique Lisburn Road 1. Make a plan and commit. Take the first step towards healthier habits and commit to your own personal fitness routine. Without a plan in place, a trip to the gym can quickly become a waste of time. We’re all guilty of wandering aimlessly from one piece of equipment to the next; instead, map out your workouts ahead of time and set clear training goals.

2. Stay on schedule. Habits don’t just happen; they’re formed over

time. Consistency really is the key. Prioritise exercise and create a new habit by sticking to w w w. m y u l s t e r l i f e . c o m

FITNESS the schedule. It can be as simple as swapping a TV show for a stint at the gym three times a week!

3. Track progress. Performing the same workout day after day will lead to boredom and probably a training plateau - where progress comes to a slow stop. Keep a workout log in your phone - recording the exercises, sets, reps, and weight used during each training session. Use this record to create new goals.

8. Don’t multitask your time. It might be tempting to check emails or reply to facebook comments in between sets (I’m guilty!) but a trip to the gym should mean more work than rest. Try upping the intensity by using a stopwatch to monitor rest between sets and keep workouts efficient.

9. Rest. Regular exercise is great, but like anything, you can have too much of a good thing – also known overtraining. This can affect your progress, immune system and general health. Remember: results = work + recovery. Never underestimate the importance of a good night’s sleep!

10. Celebrate progress! Forming a new habit is challenging, so set manageable goals and take small, actionable steps towards those

healthy workout habits. Change won’t occur overnight, so pat yourself on the back when you achieve a goal. Treat yourself - you deserve it.

CARS

ot so many years ago this sector of the car market (£50-75k) didn’t really exist. You, me or anyone could buy a Ford Cortina or a Mercedes and that was grand! Today exists a very different world where almost every conceivable variant of every marque has a place in an ever expanding showroom, and if you believe the ad men and 64

watch the ads, each car is built for a specific person of specific age who has a surfboard and no job.

A case in point regard the sheer number of variants of each manufacturer on the road – Growing up you had an Audi 80 or if you had a little more money you had an Audi 100. Today you can have an A1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8,

Now take all of these models and add eaither, S-line, Black edition, Black edition+, S on an RS and you’ll have the same car with different trim/HP/Styling. The list at Audi goes on, TT, TTS, TTRS, Q3, Q5, Q7, R8 and if we read correctly Audi plan to release 7 brand new letters to the Alphabet in 2016 allowing them to build many new cars that will all look the same with a surfboard on the roof but run off the national grid via your hoover socket causing many petrol stations to close and as a result 500ml bottles of diet coke and packets of chewing gum will find their way on to the endangered species list.
