The Teorema Festival returns to Barcelona for its third year. Note that it is going on from September 30 to October 6, 2019, because it is going to be held in several places and there is plenty of content in each one of them. It is not a conventional festival, but rather a festival which brings together experimental formats such as live acts, visual arts, conferences, workshops, performance and short films, all of them conceptualized, created with passion and art, and blended together to offer an experience that few festivals can provide. The location of Teorema Festival 2019 is the Convent de Sant Agustí, a classic and comfortable space set in the Born district.

ADE PRESENTS CONFERENCES SUCH AS WE THE AUDIENCE, WHERE YOU ARE THE PROTAGONIST

Amsterdam Dance Event, one of the most important electronic music events to be held every year in the Dutch capital, returns in 2019 with a complete program of conferences. One of the attractions of ADE is, without a doubt, the conferences that are going to be held over these days. One to look out for is the one by Lisa Ellis and Pip Rush Jansen of Arcadia Spectacular from Soundcloud, Raymond Roker of AEG Studios, the technology legend, Roger Linn in MusicTalks, Dr. CTO of Amazon, Werner Vogels of ADE TECH, and Hannah of ADE HEALTH. Added to that is the fact that—to make it as easy as possible to navigate the extensive conference program—thematic verticals are being introduced for Live and Health on Wednesday, and for Labels, Publishing & Streaming on Thursday. “We The Audience” has also been created, an opportunity for people who are not usually heard to express their opinions and get immediate feedback from the people in the industry that surrounds them.

Spillers Records, established in 1894, is the oldest record shop in the world. It is located in Cardiff, Wales.

Exciting Places #4

Spillers was founded in 1894 by Henry Spiller at its original location in Queens Arcade, where the shop specialised in the sale of phonographs, wax phonograph cylinders and shellac phonograph discs. In the early 1920s, Spiller’s son Edward took over the running of the business and, with the aid of the popular accordionist and bandleader Joe Gregory, sold musical instruments alongside the pre-recorded music. In the late 1940s, Henry moved the shop around the corner to a larger premises on The Hayes.

Since 2006 the shop’s future was made uncertain when the site rent was increased by Spillers’ landlords, Helical Bar, who stated that they are keen for the shop to survive. A local campaign to save the shop was initiated, including a petition initiated by Owen John, and supported by members of the Welsh Assembly, the Manic Street Preachers and Columbia Records. In 2010 Spillers moved to the nearby Morgan Arcade, initially on a temporary basis, with the expectation that the move will be made permanent if successful.

Talking about art as an asset class is not something new, although it may well be that today’s casual art buyers do not fully appreciate the profound differences in the way that the art market works when compared to the stocks and bonds market. Here is a look at how those differences affect the risks and benefits of investing in art.

Historical Value [Eng]

Art has been rooted in human life for thousands of years. From the Stone Age to the present day, art has been an important form of freedom of expression. It has enabled people to begin to understand each other from points of view that would not have been clear without it, and it has given us a view of the history of mankind ever since the beginning of time.

Modern portfolios are showing that those who have the means to invest are doing so and seeing returns of between 5 and 7% in the art world. Investing in luxury or collector’s items is becoming the best thing to do because the traditional investment markets are becoming very volatile. Items such as expensive wines, vintage cars and works of art are popular now due to the fact that their markets are less unpredictable.

Ecoc i m no e u l va [Eng]

The economic recession that took place a few years ago did a lot of damage. Not many markets coped well, but the art market recovered with total buoyancy, and may have been the fastest to do so. In any case, much faster than traditional markets. Those people who possessed investments in art were not very affected. Compared to investment in stocks or bonds, art offers investors a tangible alternative opportunity.

Art is a look at the past. It can arouse emotional attachment and can also explore areas of history that we were not aware of. It is something that can be enjoyed and appreciated just by looking at it. For these reasons, it is highly probable that it will increase in value simply due to its age. Like fine wine and classic cars, art will only become more valuable, whether that is through monetary value or its expressive value to a potential collector.

It is true that—when it comes to buying art—one important aspect is to have insider access to industry information. If not, tell that to Dmitry Rybolovlev, who thought he had been scammed when he paid the Swiss art dealer Yves Bouvier $127.5 million for Salvator Mundi by Leonardo da Vinci in 2013, once he found out that Bouvier had paid between $75-80 million for it. However, after the sale of Salvator Mundi in November 2017 at Christie’s for $450.3 million, it was difficult to argue that he had paid too much.

Interview

Yaya is one of those artists that make a difference and one of our favourite artists for whom we feel a special affection.

His music shows different influences that we have decided to set out in this special article featuring 4 cities that have marked his life, and, of course, his way of expressing himself through music.

4 PLACES

THARTKED MA E. MY LIF

What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear this place mentioned? The city that never sleeps. What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear this place mentioned? Savana Potente, which is the name of our party in town for 13 years. What was it about this city that influenced you or that you like most? My family and my closest friends are the ones that have motivated and helped me the most to reach my goals. A magical place in this city that you would recommend to our readers? Parco Europa. I’ve spent entire (days and nights) in that place. It’s located a few kilometres away from the city and it’s got a sick view from above! It has always been such an inspirational place for me. The club/bar or restaurant that you would recommend? For the oysters and raw fish lovers, I say “Simini Restaurant”. No doubt about it! A track to define the city? M.A.N.D.Y. vs Booka Shade Body Language.

What was it about this city that influenced you or that you like most? This city is a must destination for anyone who wants to grow and improve as an artist. You can really feel the passion of the people for the music and living in there for 4 years has helped me to strengthen my musical skills. In this city, I gave life to some projects, including my label Tamango Records.

What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear this place mentioned? It makes my heart beat intensely. I’ve spent the best moments of my life here, but unfortunately also the worst. What was it about this place that influenced you or that you like most? The White Island was definitely my springboard. In 2003 I had the chance to get in the game playing at some after-parties, meeting nice people and confronting me with many many DJs. That was the Golden Age for sure on the island, when people only wanted to listen to music for real. A magical place in this place that you would recommend to our readers? I think that there’s no place more magic than Es Vedra. The club/bar or restaurant that you would recommend? “Salvadò Restaurant” has the freshest and most appetizing fish. A track to define the place? Loco Diee - Seeing Thought Shadows.

Lisboa

A magical place in this city that you would recommend to our readers? Club Der Visionaire, it was my 2nd home. The club/bar or restaurant that you would recommend? If you want good sushi, I suggest “Aiko Restaurant”. A track to define the city? Drexciya - Water Walker.

FORMATS & WAYS OF LISTENING TO MUSIC.

020

[Eng] Over the past few years, different ways of playing music have changed to the extent that small wars have begun between the defenders of analogue and digital. We can distinguish between two sides: those who are most purist who defend the sound quality of vinyl—and now even the fashion of cassettes—versus those who, on the contrary, are convinced that the ease of use offered by streaming services or applications such as YouTube and Soundcloud makes them the best way to listen to music. This particular war is not only between users and listeners, it is also among professionals for whom, for some reason or another, music forms part of their working equipment. Here below we are going to review some of the formats that are currently preferred, whether for their quality or quantity, when it comes to playing music.

[Eng]

cassetes

Records have been around since the early 1900s. The first versions went round at 78 RPM and were made of shellac, which made them noisy and fragile. Due to the fragility of shellac, which frequently broke while it was being transported, people began to produce their LPs and EPs on vinyl.

Vinyl is perhaps the simplest format, since its signal remains analogue over the course of the entire chain. The information is pressed into the grooves of a record. They are tracked by a needle connected to a cartridge that recognises vibrations as frequencies and sends them on to be amplified, first in a phonographic phase and then by a power amplifier, all of it before the sound comes out of the speakers. Which is why we can say that an entire recording’s information is stored inside the disc, which means that it really is the only truly lossless audio format. That is why how well or badly it transfers depends on your turntable and other external components. It is of course true that size and portability have been one of the biggest drawbacks for vinyl. Over time, the music industry sought a solution and developed new formats, so that people could easily take music to work, to parties or to just enjoy in the streets.

VINyl

[Eng]

Compact cassettes, or tapes, were invented by the Philips company and presented in Europe at the Radio ShowEurope technology convention in 1962.

The first cassettes had an inverted casing with a maximum playing time of 45 minutes of stereo audio per side; significantly longer than the playing time of a vinyl LP. The tapes also fitted into a more affordable, more compact package and their size led to portable players, such as the famous Walkman. This turned them into one of the most manageable ways of playing music that could be carried with you known up until then. The invention of tapes also introduced a new and volatile concept into recorded music: piracy. The arrival of cassettes and cassette recorders led to record companies predicting devastating effects on the music industry. At the present time, tapes are not our main way of enjoying music, but the industry is still active; in recent months, we have seen how high-level international artists such as Björk and Kraftwerk have made special editions of their records on cassette.

Technologies

Interview

s é i p a v a L e D ¡ ! o d n u m l a Luis Pérez Calvo lives by and for art; he’s an artist who dreams of exhibiting at La Casa Encendida in Madrid, a building he has known ever since childhood, and where he already has a big project for this space. If Luis has to define his art, he defines it as extraterrestrial and traditional. Here below we chat with him to find out more about what the traditional art coming from the neighbourhood of Lavapiés is like.

It is often said that we all have an inner child... what is your inner child like?

No intento hacerme mayor (risas). Soñando bajo los focos de un escenario...

I try not to get older... (laughs). Dreaming beneath the spotlights of a stage...

¿Qué querías ser de pequeño? ¿Con qué trabajo soñabas?

What did you want to be when you were small? What job did you dream about?

I dreamed of driving a train, but not one of those there are now; more like one of the green-coloured 340 series diesel locomotives from the 70’s hooked up to a lot of passenger cars, sleeping cars and freight wagons travelling right across Spain from North to South.

What when that your

influenced you most you were growing up can be seen today in works?

Many things: advertising, cinema and music, among others.

The circus marked the lives of many of those born in the 70s and 80s in our country; in your case, what kind of circus do you remember? Now that things have changed a lot...

I remember the Atlas circus when it used to set up on a site in Plaza de Castilla in Madrid with all its trailers, lorries, its signage, its tent, its animals...

Interview

En tus exposiciones, has realizado referencias a artistas como: David Bowie, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Rolling Stones...

027

In your exhibitions, you have made references to artists such as David Bowie, Jerry Lee Lewis and The Rolling Stones. Tell us about those works and about the materials you use. And if you had to do them about Spanish groups and singers, who could you do them about?

[Eng]

From that time and from those kinds of cultural arts from the past, what do you think we should bring back to the current art scene? The continuous double session cinema. Where do you live now? What does a place have to possess for you to wake up there each day? In Madrid, light and good music and lots of art. In your biography, you say that if you had been born in a neighbourhood like Soho or Brooklyn, your works would not be different from other international artists, but, what do you think being born in a neighbourhood as traditional as Lavapiés can contribute to an artist in a positive way? Memories of the neighbourhood cinemas, the wholesale markets, having the flea market nearby and Gran Vía in Madrid. Lavapiés, Embajadores... Madrid in general; are they also crazy places? What can you tell us about the exhibition that you had in Madrid called Mundo Chiflado? It was in the Blanca Soto gallery, sharing the line-up with my friend, the artist Miguel Ángel Fúnez. Together we paid homage to the Warner cartoons, Looney Tunes, the lucky rabbit, Porky, etc. The exhibition was well received by both the public and the critics and—on the day of the inauguration—the police came at the last minute to say that it could not be on the street because of the number of people who came to the opening. The neighbours were surprised and, in the end, the local police turned up. Where is the craziest place in the world that you have ever been? Naples, everyone shouting, cars trying to pass one another in tiny alleys...

In my last collective exhibition, at the Cultural Center in La Villa, entitled Bailar de Arquitectura, the curator of the exhibition, Javier Panera, saw my installation in La Gran gallery where all the work was by foreign groups and he asked me whether—for the installation at the Fernán Gómez Center—I could take Spanish groups and I got into it straight away: Leño, Radio Futura, Zombis, Kaka de Luxe, etc... All recent work from this year. Over the course of the years, what is the most surprising name or adjective that people have called you? The ragman. I suppose because of the accumulation of popular information and objects on the wall that I did in Bailar de Arquitectura. It was a dust trap that paid homage to advertising, Aretha Franklin’s records and sgraffito vases, ceramic radios and cans and plastic containers and legendary album covers. What are your upcoming projects? I am still working on the Unplugged series. Reinterpreting pop and rock album covers... mixing the extra-terrestrial and the traditional. I am also continuing with my collection of artists’ stickers, a collection of art stickers, of exhibitions by my favourite artists, friends who are artists and the exhibitions I see mainly in Madrid. I’ve got almost 300, and you can follow them on my Facebook wall, where I post one or two every week to coincide with the exhibition, as a way of promoting it.

¿Tu desayuno perfecto es? Huevos revueltos. ¿Tu obra preferida?

[Eng]

What is your favourite breakfast? Scrambled eggs Your favourite work of art? All of them, (laughs), but perhaps I would stick with the Mundo Muñeco series where all my preferences are reflected on the canvasses. And when it comes to those by others, many, but in particular, Un mundo by the painter Ángeles Santos. Your favourite artist? There are so many, Hieronymus Bosch.

Interview

Your favourite restaurant? My favourites are the ones with big tables and wooden seats where the kitchen is next to you and you can see how they are preparing everything.

028

Your favourite place for a getaway? Going up north and embracing the grass.

Hello Alessandro, hello Fabio, hello Glowal. Photo: Vitorino

Interview

A pleasure to have you in my section Mapping! A duo that in just 1 year is breaking all over the world with productions. My most sincere congratulations. You are the perfect profile for this section!

030

Thanks!

[Eng]

What’s behind Glowal? Where does Alessandro come from and how many years was working in music? And Fabio? Tell us a little about your influences. We live in two different Italian cities(Alessandro in Pisa, Fabio in Lecce) so we spend a good part of the day on the phone, talking, planning and exchanging ideas on quite everything around Glowal. We both had, in different ways, an artistic journey before joining forces, with both good and bad experiences and a musical background that is part of our actual sound. We found ideological and artistic affinities in each other and felt the conditions were right for Glowal. There are many factors that lead you to take this kind of decision, but the feeling that it is the right thing in the end is the one that prevails. Obviously our characters are different, but the passion and determination with which we approach the project is the same. We think this is what makes it work, each one of us has his own attitudes and is completely dedicated to Glowal. Do you have any rituals to produce? Do you do it together or does everyone do something about the track and send each other the track according to the process of creating them? Tell us a little about the process you’re going through in the studio. Siamese, Innervisions, ATLANT, Sapiens and now Diynamic. In just a little more than a year. Is this achieved by aiming directly at these labels or by simply letting them carry you away? Tell us what you think has been your secret to go so fast and so well. There’s no particular secret, we have been doing lot of music and sent it to the labels we believed were the right home for it. Also a little bit of the past experiences helps to see things from a different point of view. Do you prefer software, hardware or both? Can you explain us the machines that you work with or the pluggins most used by you in the process of creating music? We use a lot of software, vst and various plug-ins + Midi Controllers, a Native Instrument Maschine, a Midi Keyboard and a microphone, very basic setup + creativity.

Is 2019 the best year of your lives? Why? For sure 2019 is a very good year for us, we are very happy about how things developed during this year for Glowal and we are looking forward to make it better and better. What do you like the least about the industry, although you’ll probably see everything rosy now?

We work constantly on music and every two months we close ourselfes in the studio together for 10 days or more to finalize the sketches and ideas we collected and to start and finish new tracks from 0.

We love the industry in general, is like a big playground where you learn to play with good and bad experiences on your own skin. If we have to say something we like the least here it is: the superficiality of some people working in the industry who don’t have a little bit of forward thinking about an artist career if it’s not immediately accompanied by great numbers. But yes it’s all part of the game and we love it. Can you give 3 tips to young guys who want to go as high as you are doing in such a short time?

In the way that you are going... Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Can you tell us something 1) Work hard on your music. about your next releases? Any clue? 2) Stay connected, be curious and We prefer to keep working step by try to understand what happens in step, one goal at a time, in 5 the industry. years? Who knows. 3) Be humble but always think with We have two remixes for Agoria your head. dropping in September and a new EP coming very soon aswell, but we can’t unveil so much about it in this moment.

Saying farewell to the summer in Ibiza.

032

033

Having the freedom to choose what you spend your time, where and to whom... That is the real luxury. [Eng]

Ibiza has become a favorite destination for those who want to enjoy a corner full of relaxation, unforgettable sunsets and leisure for all tastes. An island surrounded by the Mediterranean, with beaches and coves where you live experiences and disconnect from the daily routine and bustle of big cities. An icon in terms of natural environment and its declared World Heritage Sites.

OD Real Estate

That is why we decided that it would be an unbeatable location for a #TheWhiteAngelExperience, because we are affected by the location is one of the factors that take into account when selecting a home.

034

While its beaches and coves always stand out, the charm of the inland and coastal villages is not far behind. If you are still not convinced if this trip is worth it, take paper and pen and do not miss the following names among your “must to see”:

-SANT JORDI DE SES SALINES An interior town to which the Salineras belong, from which salt is extracted. Near the airport, there is also Playa d’en Bossa. -SANTA EULALIA IBIZA A coastal town that houses the only river on the island. -SANTA GERTRUDIS DE FRUITERA A perfect mini-getaway in which you enjoy an area of pedestrian streets, white houses, bars and restaurants. -SANTA INÉS Noted for its natural environment, with a beautiful plain of almond trees. -SANT VICENTE DE SA CALA One of the smallest but a very good option to get to know the typical Ibizan fauna. -SANT FRANCESC DE S´ESTANY A point in the way of any getaway, with a lot of history around the church built with the intention of being a place of prayer for salt workers.

A route that is worth being recorded, granting the necessary time to admire those buildings in which the typical white of the Ibizan architecture stands out. And as a final icing on the tour, what better way to see the sunset in Cala Comte, one of the most admired in Ibiza and with a reputation that crosses borders.

ART ‘19

Art night in Palma, Majorca.

19/20/21 Sep

THIS YEAR, THE MAIN HIGHLIGHT WILL BE AFRICAN ART

[Eng]

Ever since 1997, the capital of Majorca has hosted, in mid-September, the Nit de l’Art, one of the most important events in the city in which the city’s museums and private art galleries open their doors for free to locals and tourists during the evening. On the Balearic island, the late summer nights have an even more special charm with Nit de l’Art, a Majorcan version of the popular allnight events held in different cities around the world. This year, the main highlight will be African art, represented by a series of guest artists from all corners of the continent, who are yet to be announced. In addition, it will be the first time in history in which national organisations specialising in contemporary art take part. These include the ARCO Foundation, who are going to offer Arco Walks: free tours and guided visits of contemporary art led by experts, where those who wish to attend are required to sign up beforehand. Many of the galleries have programmed special exhibitions by renowned artists for these days, conceived to be enjoyed while having a glass of champagne. The streets of Palma also really come to life over this period with performance art, music and theatre. This year, the chosen dates are September 19, 20 and 21, with each day starting at 7:00 p.m., when the different museums and galleries open their doors for the Nit de l’Art until midnight. This event places Palma on the list of capitals that promote avantgarde art and up-and-coming artistic movements. Without a doubt, it’s an unmissable event that establishes a very important link between the citizens and culture, and one that has been consolidated thanks to the support among private galleries and public institutions.

[Eng]

Climate change

Without a doubt, one of the obligations of today’s society is to do away with plastic, especially single-use plastic. This would already be doing a great deal as it is a material that is doing so much damage to our planet.

044

How to replace it? Well, it is not enough just to eliminate plastic bags from supermarkets, or straws from bars; there is much more to do, and, to many people’s surprise, there are materials that can become more than perfect substitutes for plastic.

This is incredibly sustainable to produce, since it is made from waste products from maize production and maize is also easy to grow. PLA can be used to make drinks bottles and various containers, some of which are even food-grade.

Without forgetting Ibiza Global Radio’s beginnings, when a visionary, Juan Tur, who left us a little more than half a year ago and we remember with all our hearts, was told he was crazy to open a channel for the most avantgarde electronic music and today is one of the main tourist attractions for millions of people, to represent the best and purest essence of the island through sound: He took the risk and on August 4th 2004, this unrepeatable phenomenon called Ibiza Global Radio was born. A small radio studio in the centre of Ibiza, which then moved to a bigger space in San Antonio a few years later and where hundreds of unforgettable experiences have been lived, both for the Ibiza Global Radio team, for the artists who have visited us and for the listeners during a time when the growth of the brand took place, until reaching its current moment, a moment in which Ibiza Global Radio is at such an incredible place, integrated into a media group called Grupo Prensa Pitiusa. Ibiza Global Radio now has 16 million listeners / viewers per month through our online radio and television station and over 1,5 million followers on social networks (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Youtube, Soundcloud, Tune in) and reaches more than 180 countries, becoming an attractive and above all a point of reference for like minded people of all ages and cultures that are all united by the island of Ibiza and dance music. Thank you to all of the artists that have played at the station over the years, to all of the venues we have broadcast from, to all of the brands and promoters and of course to all of our listeners for their constant support. Interview

HOW HAS PAWSA ASSISTED ON THE LABEL SIDE AS A CO-FOUNDER: As SolidGrooves grew on the London scene, I had a very clear vision of the particular sound that I wanted to push forward. At the same time, I was playing a few shows with PAWSA and we had become friends. ALBERTO BRAGADO f o r o t c e r Di

. s e v o o r G Solid

[Eng]

WHEN AND HOW WAS SOLID GROOVES BORN? It was founded by Michael seven years ago; at the beginning, as a small, very local London party that started out with a small but solid public right from the beginning. PRIVILEGE HAS BEEN YOUR HOME FOR SOME YEARS NOW. WHAT SPECIAL FEATURES DOES A PLACE HAVE TO POSSESS FOR IT TO BE A “SOLID GROOVES” PLACE? The Vista room in Privilege has got something special and it has been home to many great brands. For “Solid Grooves”, we are always looking for that special essence in each place. We want people to feel that sensation that characterises Solid Grooves, apart from complying with certain standards in terms of sound, layout, etc. IF YOU HAD TO DO A TOP 5 OF CITIES/PLACES WHERE YOU HAVE MOST FANS /FOLLOWERS, WHICH ONES WOULD THEY BE? London, which is our home, Manchester, Madrid, Milan, Las Palmas and now there are many cities in South America where we are getting very good feedback.

OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS, SOLID GROOVES IS ALMOST A WAY OF LIFE FOR MANY PEOPLE; HOW HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED THE CHANGES IN THESE RECENT YEARS? Very happy with all the brand’s growth, of course, thanks to the support of our Groovers, who ensure that the family continues to grow... from its small beginnings in London. In recent years, what’s more, we have focused on a more international market, thus making it possible to reach more places with our concept and for people to be able to be part of this movement. This has also helped us to consolidate our residence in Ibiza. MANY PEOPLE ARE CRITICISING THE CHANGES IN IBIZA OVER RECENT YEARS. HOW DO YOU SEE THE ISLAND? I think that the island has been divided between more underground music and another type of tourism that is more VIP, and which is going to keep growing. In our more underground environment, you need to go for the new generations. I think that other older brands that are not re-inventing themselves are suffering the consequences.

[Eng]

Your favourite place to get away from it all in Ibiza? I love being able to get away from it all by boat to the different coves on the island. A restaurant? Fish Shack. A session/party to go to as well as Solid Grooves? Pikes, it has something special. The special guest in the party that you have enjoyed the most? Difficult to say, we have had some guests that have turned out to be a nice surprise, but one who never fails is Richy Ahmed… Good music, a nice person and a good groover!

For example, whenever I realize I haven’t been using something for, say, half a year, I think about selling it to someone who can make better use of it. I suppose you can get everything from a computer too I just happen to like having outside gear because I used to do everything inside one and I just got really bored of it.

In the studio

My studio doesn’t consist in a lot of stuff really or at least for what I can see in other more «professional» studios.

062

I moved places a lot in the past years so I had to always make sacrifices with machines and try to keep it as small and simple as I can. At the same time I don’t like having loads of things and I try to have what sounds best for me.

YAMAHA CS-15 A special highlight for me is the Yamaha CS-15, you can find it cheap still, for analog standards, and to me it sounds so alive and old, if that makes sense. I have read people saying it has a nasal character to it and I can understand why they say that; but the real sound is quite organic and deep, it always surprises me. I quite love that machine.

EMPRESS ECHOSYSTEM I love delays and reverbs too. The Empress Echosystem is one of the best delays I have heard, it sounds like it has different dimensions when you dial the right settings. It also has a liquid quality to it that I never experienced with another delay, I really recommend it.

I have the Moog delay and a Thermae too. To be honest, I’m still trying to fill the gap that my tape delay left but nothing gets it right, although those two are quite magic.

DIGITACK My drums take bits of everywhere and I can say they are quite sloppy most of the time. I’m trying to make them right though, that’s why I got the Digitakt, the « in vogue » drum machine. I use the Vermona too but not too much lately, the sounds you can get from that one are amazing but in some ways we don’t connect as well as I wished.

I guess everybody works in different ways but to me, I need a good sounding melody to get me inspired and I try to get it with those machines. Of course, every day is different and you need the ideas first, but keeping a modular and not too big studio works well enough for me. With it I can do fast sketches and all. It’s like a little notebook where you can draw a bit in everyday and from a simple idea I can start layering sounds, they way you can paint with different colours. The songs are usually a big collage of those first little pieces.

SEASON 2019 SEASON 2019

Interview

S.A.M. S.A.M. - Fury’s Laughter.

[Eng] What was the party in Ibiza, 2019? I have seen lots of good things, but for atmosphere, great people and music, Pyramid, at Amnesia on Mondays. What has been the failure /bullshit in Ibiza this year? The high prices and the ‘VIP’ direction that life on this island has gone in! These two things have led us to lose the ‘real’ clubbers. The future of music in Ibiza lies in? The return of the clubbers, or that the people who come here are not just in search of what is easy (full parties, and the same music that they listen to in the car). For you, which artist has been the revelation of 2019? I discovered S.A.M a few years ago, but this year was definitely his year. A phenomenal artist! Which artist (of those who do not usually come) would you like to see more of on the island? Laurent Garnier. Which artist would you buy a single ticket for so that they did not come back to the island? All those who play whatever is easiest in order to please the dance floor! All bending over backwards going from techno to reggaeton... The track of summer, 2019? S.A.M. - Fury’s Laughter. It was like a big oxygen balloon for the market, super saturated in what I call, ‘cheap Tech House’.

“Let It Go” - Louie Vega & The Martinez Brothers con Marc Bassy (Cuttin’ Headz).

What was the party in Ibiza, 2019? Best party of Ibiza 2019 is The Ritual with Anané & Louie Vega at Heart, Cuttin Headz Party, Dixon Presents Transmoderna, Paradise/ JJ, Glitterbox, Black Coffee at Hi, guaranteed good times at all of these. Choose one? The Ritual with Ananè & Louie Vega, it brings us all together. What has been the failure/ bullshit in Ibiza this year? Biggest mistake is island being so expensive all around, you alienate the every day club head who wants to come to Ibiza to have a good time and they are the numbers that fill the clubs! The future of music in Ibiza lies in? The future music of the island, not just one kind of music, its all about good music, collaborations with events, djs, artists, businesses, cross pollinating is the future! Why not a big Reggaton artist with a house artist, a techno artist with a house artist, all getting together and making music on the island and then performing it together live with a wonderful party in a special place. People want to come to be happy, sing, and dance, you want to be enlightened when you come to Ibiza. For you, which artist has been the revelation of 2019? Newcomer in Ibiza, it takes time to get to that stage even. Which artist (of those who do not usually come) would you like to see more of on the island? We want to see new artists on the island that have some depth musically, not just playing crescendos and getting a scream, take us somewhere with your music, make them want more! Artist who usually don’t come, We want to see more Moodymann (luckily he plays our party every year), Stevie Wonder, Sade, Timmy Regisford, Chaka Khan, Elements Of Life Band Live, Oscar G, D’Angelo, Eli Escobar, Kraftwerk, Theo Parish, among others. Which artist would you buy a single ticket for so that they did not come back to the island? We will not answer this one directly, but everyone has a chance to do something special here once you get the opportunity, up to you to make a difference or unique with your night and your music. The track of summer, 2019? “Let It Go” - Louie Vega & The Martinez Brothers with Marc Bassy (Cuttin’ Headz).

A Toni Varga (risas). ¿El track del verano 2019? Agoria – Remedy Feat. Noemie (Denis Horvat Remix).

[Eng]

What was THE party in Ibiza, 2019? Even though the summer is not going well for me or any other party, I think that El Row continues to be the party that is making the biggest splash and where people are having the best time. What has been the failure/ bullshit in Ibiza this year? The failure in Ibiza is that they are starting to do reggaeton parties. The future of music in Ibiza lies in? The future of music in Ibiza lies in going back to its beginnings a bit and bringing back the underground parties where there wasn’t all this posing going on. For you, which artist has been the revelation of 2019? For me, Denis Horvat has been one of the outstanding artists of 2019. Which artist (of those who do not usually come) would you like to see more of on the island? Artists such as Patrice Bäumel, for example. Which artist would you buy a single ticket for so that they did not come back to the island? Toni Varga (laughs).

Feater – Time million feat. Vilja Larjosto (Villalobos remix). [Eng]

What has been THE party in Ibiza in 2019? I don’t think that any party has been a surprise. It is a time of changes that are very much for the worst on the island; the clubber tourists have disappeared, and the arrival of reggaeton in a big way has meant the decline of electronic music and of quality on the island. What has been the failure/bullshit in Ibiza this year? There have been quite a few: the debacle of big brands—such as Cocoon—who have not known how to reinvent themselves; Amnesia coming up with the idea of replacing Carola with Luciano; Circoloco, who, year after year, bets on the safe side and does not change its way of booking, without counting on the fact that there will never be a Spaniard in its queues. Where does the future of music in Ibiza lie? Unfortunately, in commercial music. That young public who used to wait one year to see all those artists perform day after day in the big clubs on the island no longer exists. It is going to be very difficult to rid the island of these Latin beats. Which artist has been a revelation for you in 2019? No-one: I heard some very good sets, but there aren’t any artists who come from outside to play that any local DJ couldn’t match or even do better than; just a lack of chances to prove it. Which artist (of those who are not usually here) would you like to see more of on the island? Zip, Delano Smith, Dj Masda, Margaret Dygas, Chez Damier...

Jordan

Which artist would you pay a one-way ticket for, so that they did not come back to the island? All of those artists who introduced reggaeton; it would be the best investment we could possibly make. The track of summer, 2019? Feater – Time million feat. Vilja Larjosto (Villalobos remix).

Francesco Monti

[Eng]

What was THE party in Ibiza, 2019? In my point of view and with all the big changes on the island... To pick one out in particular, Music On by Destino (daytime). What has been the failure /bullshit in Ibiza this year? Incorporating so many Latin parties. There have been loads of complaints that have spread all over social media, bringing about a drop in the number of electronic music lovers on the island. The future of music in Ibiza lies in? Ethnic music by day and remixed classics by night; it seems that is the trend... For you, which artist has been the revelation of 2019? Charlotte de Witte, who has gone from nothing to appearing at all the main electronic music events at the international level. Which artist (of those who do not usually come) would you like to see more of on the island? Martin Buttrich.

Which artist would you buy a single ticket for so that they did not come back to the island? Steve Aoki: personally, I do not like “showman” artists. In this case, his main way of artistic expression is not music, but rather throwing pies...

FOGO ISLAND INN

Strange hotels

A hotel where renewable energy is the highlight.

Fogo Island Inn is a hotel on the island of Fogo, with only 29 rooms available for guests. The building, located at the most eastern end of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada, is set amid its surroundings in the form of an X-shaped building. Designed by the Norwegian studio, Saunders Architecture, Fogo Island Inn rises up like an impressive fortress on a group of steel pillars, set on a rock outcrop on the northern edge of the island of Fogo. It is a simple, linear structure made up of two rectangular spaces that intersect. The inn echoes the jagged asymmetry of the landscape it inhabits while at the same time infusing the surrounding area with a totally contemporary architectural aesthetic. One elegant architectural feature is that the hotel looks like an iceberg in the fog, floating over the ground. It has a cinema, an art gallery, a spa and even a library. It aims to minimise its impact on the environment thanks to the inn having a system to collect and distribute rain water; a heating system and water recirculation system that run on solar power; and solar-powered radiant heating throughout the hotel. Strategically raised above the island’s rocky topography, the inn’s steel pillars encourage the local ecosystem to continue.

Which artist did you first see in a show? Which artists or group do you remember from your childhood? Definitely Depeche Mode and Kraftwerk. I have always been drawn to electronic music and what these artists did amazed me and inspired me to start doing music myself.

That was DJ Pierre at the legendary Stammheim.

Which artist marked you to start in music? As mentioned before Depeche Mode and Kraftwerk had a lot of impact on me but also Sven Väth, Dj Rush, Dj Ricardo Villalobos and Dj Pierre lead the way.

Who do you remember sharing a back to back with the first time? I never did a back to back to be honest. I just started playing Dj sets again and before that I played live for the majority of my career.

Which artist disappointed you the most? * BULLSHIT David Hasselhoff - I reached out him a couple of times to collaborate but he just brushed me of saying he’s busy lying on the floor eating cheeseburgers.

Which artist would you party with? *FIESTA Most likely Björk. I expect that to be not just a party and but an adventure.

Which artist did you like working with in the studio? The people I usually work with are spread around the globe so we keep sending tracks back and forth and don’t work in one place.

Which artist would you like to work with in the near future? Which artist do you recommend to keep the track? APRAPTA - the sound is amazing and keeps evolving from track to track.

I am going to work with D.O.P in the near future. A collaboration I have been wanting to do for a while now.

Tourism is one of the biggest sources of income in our country; we live from tourism, and cities like Barcelona or Palma in Mallorca head the list of chosen places by those wanting to know our country. In recent years, the diversity of tourism models has increased. We have gone from the usual sun and sea-style tourism, to other kinds such as indoor, sports, festival tourism, or of course, heritage, where our country includes monuments such as the Alhambra in Granada, which is the eighth most visited monument in the world with approximately 3.5 million visitors a year.

WHERE DO YOU WANT TO PLAY? I have already played all around the world.

Hello Helmut, Hello DJ Hell. Nice to have you with us. You are a legend, but one that is still very involved in electronic music. We are very happy to have you with us. What was electronic music like in the 60’s? Who were you following, or who would you compare your sound with? I was born in the 60s, so electronic music was just getting going and it was all more avant-garde and experimental. Producers and musicians had to find out how to deal with electronic equipment. Kraftwerk was the first band that totally fascinated me, their music was unheard of and new and it had a romantic touch that sounded very life changing. The 80s was the decade when lots of new music was defined and people were looking for something new and fresh. DJ culture was very different. What was the main purpose of making this music, since we can suppose there was little chance of it even selling? I was fascinated by house music in the mid-80s, and when the first acid tracks came out, there was no way back. For me, music was never about selling or becoming famous. For me, it was more like finding my own way of doing it and finding my own musical identity in order to put all my DNA into it. Is there a year when you started thinking of yourself as a DJ? In which club did you start to develop in the booth? In the late 70s, I got a residency in local clubs around Munich, and from there more offers came in. I played nearly every day in a different club back then. Dance music i.e. house and techno was mainly played inside clubs; there were no festivals for them. Very slowly, there were people getting involved to help you with the bookings and travel and contracts, so I could focus on music and producing. Later, I started my own label called International Deejay Gigolo Records.

You were the founder of International Deejay Gigolo Records. What do you think your label meant for the development of the club scene in Germany? For Germany and Europe, it was the biggest impact you can imagine. The first year, 1996, I Said, “We only do vinyl and no promotion at all”. The second year, I started cooperating with press and promo teams in Berlin, London, Paris, Barcelona and NYC. From that moment on, there was massive hype and I thought, “We need to give it a name that people can grasp what’s happening and understand what Gigolo was doing. Electroclash was born and not only the club world, but also the art and fashion world jumped onto this movement. Now we have had around 340 releases over the years and we are still doing what we do.

How many big names have been made with International Deejay Gigolo Records? Is there a lot of material still to be released? Will that ever come to light? Lots of new artists are singed like Alex Bau or Federico Leocata, Josh Coffee or Ken x traum. I will present them at different Gigolo nights soon. My 90s analogue tunes will be released in a digital format for the first time and I have more than 42 tracks that most people don’t know from my early days of techno and rave productions. As a person who has been in the industry for so many years, what advice would you give to a teenager who wants to dedicate themselves to music? Tell them something you would have liked to hear at the beginning. I was always listening to the masters, to the great DJs like Jeff Mills or Derrick May—I was watching them play and performing, so that I could learn and get better. Later on, I got a great compliment from Derrick when he said that I was ‘the blackest’ white DJ he had ever heard.

What do you think you still have to do in music? Is there something you haven’t done that you want to do? What’s your next project? When you are a musician or a producer or a DJ or label owner, there is no question of stopping what you do or doing something different or retiring. Jazz musicians become masters of what they do when they get older. DJs are scientists and they get better with more experience and travelling all over the world playing in front of different nationalities. I try to break new ground and experiment with different people and musical genres.

You were one of our guests during Sonar in Barcelona. What did you think of the city compared to other years? More attention than ever; Sonar has become one of the biggest electronic music festivals in the world. There is also a so-called ‘off-week Sonar’ where lots of labels showcase their work.

Daniel Campbell - Idolize. ¿EL MEJOR CLUB DÓNDE HAS PINCHADO?

Nuzzo ¿CUÁL ES TU DJ/PRODUCTOR FAVORITO?

Space, Ibiza.

Amadori ¿CUÁL ES TU DJ/PRODUCTOR FAVORITO?

¿EL MEJOR CLUB DÓNDE HAS PINCHADO?
