NEWS FROM AROUND THE JEWSON WESTERN LEAGUE
21st OCTOBER 2024
Midweek Action
With bad weather disrupting the midweek schedule, we were left with four matches across the Western League where home sides enjoyed the better of the running.
On Tuesday evening, Paulton debutant Callum English-Brown made an instant impact to help fire them to a 5-2 win over Portishead in the Premier Division. After seeing teammate Kitan Jaiyeoba suffer a tough injury last weekend, Rovers played well in his absence with Will Hailston scoring the opener, before then teeing up Milo Murgatroyd who curled home for 2-0. After Portishead pulled a goal back in the 44th minute, Paulton made sure it was they who ended the first half on a high, with English-Brown netting in added time. Town did then trim the deficit once again shortly after the interval, but Paulton responded expertly yet again with English-Brown making it 4-2, before Murgatroyd repaid Hailston with an assist who completed the scoring just after the hour mark.
Elsewhere on Tuesday, Bradford leapt to top spot in the First Division following a 2-1 win over fellow top-six outfit Cadbury Heath. The hosts made a belting start, going ahead in the fifth minute thanks to a strong finish from
in-form striker Raphael Oppong. There was then a strong riposte from the Heath, with Dan Winstone levelling in the 14th minute as they looked to continue their impressive run away from home. They eventually succumbed to Bradford however, with Curtis Dunn blasting the ball into the top corner just prior to half-time and handing them their 12th league win of the campaign.
24 hours later, Cribbs Reserves secured a 3-0 win over Hengrove thanks to the Clayton brothers. After Kieran had opened the scoring midway through the first half, Liam then wrapped things up late on either side of a header from teammate Jack Guthrie.
Wednesday’s Premier Division contest saw a late comeback from St Austell help salvage a 2-2 draw with Ivybridge. After going in front early on through Bailey Mabin, the Ivies looked to have claimed victory when Sam Hilson doubled their lead with a header ten minutes from time. St Austell then struck shortly after through Kieron Bishop, and the same man then netted again in stoppage time to snatch a point.
NEWS FROM AROUND THE JEWSON WESTERN LEAGUE
21st OCTOBER 2024 League Action
Brixham extended their lead atop the Premier Division to four points following a late comeback win at home to Bridgwater. With much of the top half in Vase action on Saturday afternoon, it looked like the Devonians had squandered their opportunity to pull further clear following a sixth minute effort from United’s Ryan Crawford. It remained 1-0 to the visitors for much of the afternoon, before Brixham finally got back on level terms following a goal ten minutes from time by Alfie Slough. Then with their next attack, Brixham were awarded a penalty, with Charlie Johansen converting to complete the dramatic fightback.
The other game in the division saw Nailsea & Tickenham earn a 2-0 win away at Saltash. Following a goalless opening half, sub Oscar Collins made an instant impact to put the Swags oneup, with a close range header from Luke Osgood then completing the victory on the hour mark.
In the First Division, Hallen moved back into top spot thanks to a 2-0 victory away at Mendip Broadwalk. The visitors had to wait until added time at the end of the first half to finally break through with Toby Walwin slotting home to make
it 1-0. One of Hallen’s usual culprits, Elliot Gardner, then added his name to the scoresheet, with a side footed finish midway through the second half wrapping up the win.
The other away side to complete victory on Saturday afternoon were Shirehampton, with a dramatic stoppage time effort leading them to a 1-0 defeat of Keynsham. With a stalemate looking like the probable outcome, Jordan Whittaker had other ideas, scoring the only goal of the game to burgle all three points for the away side.
Another side to leave it relatively late were Cheddar, with Jamie Moss’ double handing them a much-needed 2-0 win over Odd Down. Having struggled over recent weeks, the Cheesemen eventually ran out victors over the Bath side with Moss striking twice in the final ten minutes at Bowdens Park.
2-0 was also the winning margin for Avonmouth, with second half efforts from Evan Howes and Alfie Taylor leading them past AEK Boco.
The most one-sided result of the afternoon came in Calne, where the home side ran out 4-0 winners over Longwell Green. After putting his side in

front at the end of the first half, Ackeem Stewart then struck again ten minutes after the interval to make it 2-0 to the home side. Another goal shortly after from Josh McGrory put the result beyond doubt, with Stu Windsor adding a fourth to help the Lilywhites gain revenge from the defeat they suffered at Longwell Green last month.
FA Vase
There were plenty of impressive showings from Western League sides in the First Round of the Vase, including Clevedon who routed Wendron United by five goals to nil. Sam Beresford was the standout performer for the home side, completing his hat-trick with a penalty on the hour mark. Freddie King and Elliot Nicholson added to Beresford’s first-half brace in a dominant opening 45 minutes from the Seasiders.
Barnstaple also rolled through to the second round after overturning an early deficit to beat Sidmouth 3-1. After going behind in the opening stages of the game, Barnstaple got back on level terms midway through the first half when Gabby Rogers exquisite freekick found the top corner. Rogers then stuck again shortly after the interval to complete the turnaround, before
Josh Parry added a third to topple their fellow Devon outfit.
Elsewhere in Devon, there was late, late drama at Homers Heath where Buckland Athletic snuck through their tie with Millbrook thanks to a stoppage time goal from Ryan Bush. Having been held goalless for the previous 92 minutes of action, Bush, pictured below, was the right man at the right time to force home the dramatic winner. It was also a good afternoon for Paulton who finally pulled away after the interval to beat local rivals Radstock 5-0. After Will Hailston had put Rovers in front, teammate Corey Rawlings then scored either side of the interval to put the Premier Division side three goals to the good. Kye Simpson and Leo Eglin added some late gloss to the scoreline and helped to maintain Paulton’s impressive run of results at the Winterfield Stadium this term.
In another all-Western League clash, it went to the wire, with Wells fighting back from a goal down before downing Devizes on penalties. Having beaten the same opponent 1-0 in the league just two weeks previously, Devizes looked like they were going to repeat the trick after a stunning 20-yard drive from Jack Baker put them a goal to the

good. City had other ideas however, and after levelling things up through Tyson Pollard, the away side then prevailed by five goals to four on spot kicks.
St Austell came out on top against Cadbury Heath in the third tie involving Western League teams, with Tom Whipp, Liam Eddy and Matt Searle all scoring in a 3-1 victory. The other four results all went against our
sides, with Sturminster and Torpoint both falling to tight 1-0 home losses against Okehampton and Thornbury, respectively. Ilfracombe suffered a 4-0 defeat against Roman Glass St George, while Jack Witcombe’s header wasn’t enough for Bradford in their 2-1 loss at home to Andover New Street.

TODAY’S OPPONENTS
LONGWELL GREEN SPORTS
Founded in June 1966 following the great upsurge of interest in football following England's World Cup success of Bobby Moore and the England Team
Longwell Green Sports was originally formed from the workforce of the area's main employer, Longwell Green Coachworks; the team was run for many years by Harold Harding, a well-known character in and around Longwell Green.
The first pitch was laid out on the same site as today's pitch and was, in 1966, open farmland. In its early years, Longwell Green played in what was the Saturday Regional League and, by the early seventies, progressed to the District League.
By 1980, our current General Manager, John Gibbs, joined the club along with several other players from Kingswood, including our Reserves Team Manager, Jeff Fishlock. In 1982, the club became District League Division 4 Champions, losing only three games in the entire season.
In 1983, the club gained promotion to District Division 2, and the following season, the Reserve Team was formed. The first team won promotion 5 times in 9 seasons, including Division 1 runners-up and Senior District and Bristol Combination Premier Division 1 runners-up in successive seasons, reaching Bristol Premier Division in 1997. The following season, the club finished third, 2 points behind Bitton & Frampton and lifted the Premier Cup, beating Highridge 3-2.
Our Reserves, by 1993, had reached District Division 2 following several promotions with many goals being scored by our current 3rd Team Manager, Andy Britton.
In 2002, the first team reached the GFA Senior Amateur Cup final played at County HQ, losing on penalties to Nicholas Wanders.
At the end of season 2003/2004, the 1st team gained promotion to the Gloucestershire County League and following runners-up to Highridge last season, along with Portishead

and Bradford-on-Avon promoted to the Western "Toolstation" League, we believe we may well have created a little county history by being the only club on record that have achieved promotion after only one season in the County League.
The club have always had the ambition to play at the highest level, and this was rewarded when Matt Hale rejoined the club he first played for as a 15-year-old before becoming a professional footballer with Bristol City; he has also played for Yeovil and Weymouth.
Matt returned in late 2003 to assist John Gibbs as 1st team player/coach; the team finished runners-up to Sea Mills and was promoted to the County League. During the summer, Matt Hale was appointed Club Coach and 1st Team Manager.
Over the years, the club has produced many young players who have gone on to play for Conference and Western League clubs or have remained with the club; a number of them are now in our First Team squad.
In addition to the 1st team, we run a Reserves, 3rd & 4th team, also a U18s who will play in the Gloucestershire County Youth League.
At the beginning of 2003, the club changed its name from Longwell Green Sports FC to Longwell Green Sports, joining forces with the Longwell Green Juniors and forming a Senior & Junior Netball team to form a broader community sports club.
Longwell Green has always had a commitment to developing young players and benefits from a tremendous spirit amongst its teams and club members.
At present, we are in Jewson Western League Division 1.
Our Manager is Chris Alway, assisted by Mark Summers, Geraint Bater, Andy Summers and Tony Hill.
Coach - Alex Grimshaw.
